- The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite rose slightly higher Thursday as traders fought to resurrect the recent market rally that slowed earlier this week.The S&P 500 rose 0.23% to settle at 4,283.74, while the Nasdaq inched 0.21% higher to 12,965.34. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.06%, or 18.72 points, to 33,999.04.
- Thursdayβs moves came after the Dow on Wednesday fell nearly 172 points β snapping a five-day winning streak β as traders parsed through the minutes from the Federal Reserveβs July meeting.The central bank said it remains committed to fighting inflation, but indicated it could adjust its pace of tightening based on market conditions. Investors had hoped the Fed might slow the pace of its rate hikes after Julyβs better-than-expected consumer price index.

- Applied Materials β Shares of the semiconductor company rose about 2% after Applied Materials beat estimates on the top and bottom lines for its fiscal third quarter. The companyβs guidance for fourth-quarter revenue also came in ahead of expectations.
- Bill.com β Shares of the bill payment company popped 20% after the companyβs fourth-quarter results beat Wall Street expectations, according to FactSetβs StreetAccount. The company also announced a new chief product officer and chief operating officer, and said it expects to be profitable on an adjusted basis in the new fiscal year.
