I would say I profit more from value investing than from speculation, but the loss is also more from value investing!
Why do I say that? The amount of funds that I used for value investing is significantly higher than speculative stocks!
I have only started investing around Oct 2020 after the market has started to recover from the Covid-19 bear rally. As a beginner, there's so many stocks to choose from and Im totally overwhelmed! Of course I started with local SGX stocks first and my choice was $Nikko AM STI ETF(G3B.SI)$, which consists of top 3 banks, Singtel etc. That proves to be a great choice as the share prices of most SGX stocks were at their all-time low and the returns were quite significant over a few weeks.
Feeling more confident, I wanted to try the US market as I heard it's the fastest way to earn money!! Guess what did I buy??? That's right, the EV stocks!! I bought $Tesla Motors(TSLA)$and $NIO Inc.(NIO)$!!! Cos that's the most popular stocks that most of my friends recommended. As a beginner in US market, I find it hard to get the stocks that I wanted to buy as the price fluctuations is huge and my order was not filled. At that time, it was a bull rally and the pre-market prices before market opens were already + 2-3%. Hence, I bought my EV stocks using the market order when market opens and forgot to cancel my previous unfilled orders before I went to sleep. Maybe I'll call it a blessing in disguise! I woke up in the morning and the unfilled orders I placed earlier were filled as well. In the end, I bought 2x amount of shares!! As a new beginner, I remember having sleepless nights as the amount was 2x more than what I have planned. But it turned out to be 2x đ đ !! As the profit grew more and more after each day, I also started to have less worries at night.
Next is the $Pfizer(PFE)$, I would call it speculative as I only bought it when I saw the news reporting that the Covid-19 vaccines were approved for use in Dec 2020!! I was thinking this time sure huat big big liao, another đ. I was wrong this time and it became sell on news and I decided to cut loss. Although I was right in the short-term, the prices did continue going down but looking back, the current share price was much higher than what I have brought at previously.
So is HODL and diamond hands the way to go??? When it comes to value investing, I'm sure most of you here would have bought the huge China-listed companies such as $Alibaba(BABA)$, Tencent, Baidu etc. After dropping for a few months, I thought they were significantly undervalued and decided to buy them. I was wrong again! Value is not what u think the company is worth, what matters most is what the large investment institutional holdings think it's worth!!! As long as no huge fund is buying, it's difficult to push the share price up!
