Caution in the Surge: Argentina’s Stock Market Rally Amidst Economic Turbulence

In the aftermath of President-elect Javier Milei’s surprising win, Argentina’s stock market experienced a remarkable surge, with the Merval index posting its best performance since 1992. However, despite the optimism, investors should exercise caution when considering entry into the Argentine market. The country faces numerous economic challenges, and while Milei’s proposed economic “shock” therapy aims to address them, uncertainties loom large. The recent rally, coupled with the country’s history of economic volatility, highlights the inherent risks of investing in emerging markets. The surge in Argentine stocks following Milei’s win may seem enticing, but investing in emerging markets demands careful consideration. While these markets offer potential for high returns, they also come with

Before we do a deep dive into the state of Argentina's economy, I would first like to say that it would be wise to look at the graph of $ARS/USD(ARSUSD.FOREX)$ When we talk about investing, we talk about allocating capital for a long term into a company/organisation/country which we believe will provide returns over a sustainable period of time. ie. Not day or swing trading.  Qn: If we take a period of 5 years, and assume the asset price stayed the same, what would be the current return on the asset solely by influence of exchange rate factors itself?  Ans: About 10x. Not in the positive direction, but in the negative direction. With that being said, in order for your asset to maintain its value in terms of USD, it woul

$YPF SA(YPF)$ $6.3B in debt, NEGATIVE 0.3B Cashflow last quarter and massive jurisdictional risk. Good luck buying the top bulls!Back in 2004-2005 YPF was selling at $40-60/share. YPF has since identified huge, recoverable reserves--and the shares on Friday were at $10. good luck shorting!

$YPF SA(YPF)$ If you believe that YPF will double in 5 years, debt is good for returns; cash flow is negative in large part because of massive capex; jurisdictional risk is there but lessened with Milei. The big risk remaining, imo, is the $15 billion legal judgement, which may or may not stick, but should be reflected in the current stock price anyway. All in all, the upside is huge, though the short term and market's whims are pretty random.

$YPF SA(YPF)$ So this company increased 4 billion in valuation today for a total of 14 billion market cap. And there is a $17 billion legal judgment against the company for the privatization out of the US. Seems like this rally might be ahead of the facts…

YPF: GOOD Choice!

Those bullish on $YPF SA(YPF)$ can consider also $Vista Oil & Gas, S.A.B. de C.V.(VIST)$ , a fully private oil explorer in Argentina ... fast growing and still small. Not being controlled by the govt, it will have less fat as a "jobs program" for political appointees and "investments" meant to pay off political favorites.I bought in the last months and weeks, esp. Oct as Milei started to outperform in polls, so I'm done for now. YPF is set to grow massively over the next 5 years, whoever the president is - it seems to be a national consensus that it must be supported to develop shale gas & oil. Whether Milei will accelerate this process or not, we shall see, but I'm confident in the national consen

$YPF SA(YPF)$ Argentina does not have the culture of work like the US or Germany. Half the country is used to receiving welfare checks. Milei will have a lot of trouble with that plus this company was already sold to Spain before and C Kirchner later took it back by force.Never trust politicians, even if they seem like the one to make real change. I'll believe it when I see it. Hope he does what he has promised, wont hold my breath though...[LOL][LOL][LOL]

$YPF SA(YPF)$ The obvious move for Milei would be to sell Argentina’s stake in YPF (“privatize it”), use the raised billions for SORELY needed FOREX, then dilute us all by “buying-in” again to the tune of a minor cash injection (10-20% of what they pulled-out by selling) for approximately fifty percent of the company. The good news for shareholders is that we’ll probably be North of $15, soon.[Cool][Cool][Cool]
