The S&P 500 on Tuesday rose to its 42nd record close of 2021, according to Dow Jones Market Data. The index has gained almost 18% this year, based on Thursday afternoon trading, FactSet data show, at last check.
\n
But \"stocks aren't performing as well as you might expect on the back of some really good earnings\" reported for the second-quarter, said Naison-Tarajano, suggesting concerns over the spread of the more contagious delta variant of the coronavirus may be dampening sentiment.
\n
While \"relatively optimistic on equity markets\" in advising clients to stay invested, Naison-Tarajano said she is not recommending adding a lot more exposure.
\n
\"One thing I would be wary of right now is leverage with equity markets,\" she said. With the stock market up significantly this year, and uncertainty surrounding rates, she said \"we just don't want anyone to be in a position where they're going to be a forced seller on a correction.\"
\n
Buying dips in U.S. stocks, on the other hand, is the type of opportunity \"we definitely would look for,\" according to Naison-Tarajano. She said that she recommends buying dips in mega-cap growth stocks that are benefiting from secular digital trends, as well as \"oversold reflation trades.\"
\n
Goldman's private-wealth clients tend to have a long-term view of their holdings, according to Naison-Tarajano, who said she guides them with a thematic approach to investing.
\n
\"Our clients tend to be pretty overweight equities and with rates this low I'm not sure there's really anywhere else to go,\" she said. Given the market has been \"quite confusing\" following a \"volatile\" 2020, she added, \"we do see relatively high cash balances.\"
\n
That's generally good for when markets dislocate, as it sets up clients to be opportunistic, according to Naison-Tarajano, who said she considers U.S. Treasurys to be cash equivalents. That's because Treasurys have a stable net asset value and clients can trade out of them on a daily basis, she explained.
\n
Puzzling drop in yields
\n
The yield on the 10-year Treasury note was trading around 1.2% Thursday afternoon, tumbling from about 1.7% as recently as May 12, FactSet data show. Federal Reserve Vice Chair Richard Clarida said Wednesday he was surprised by the size of the decline in bond yields since the spring, MarketWatch reported.
\n
Yields are low despite strong economic growth and surges in inflation. Fed Chair Jerome Powell has repeatedly described the rise in the cost of living as transient , saying it's linked to the rebound from the pandemic.
\n
Goldman expects the 10-year Treasury yield to rise to 1.9% this year, said Naison-Tarajano.
\n
But the pandemic has pushed \"real yields\" -- or nominal yields minus core inflation --- to a negative level in the U.S., according to a BofA Global Research report this week. \"The puzzle is that they continued falling during the recovery this year, which is historically a first,\" BofA strategists led by Athanasios Vamvakidis said in the note.
\n
\"U.S. real yields are the most negative since 1974, despite a strong U.S. recovery,\" the strategists wrote. \"Nominal rates are also low, but higher than last year, suggesting higher inflation is part of the explanation in the U.S.\"
\n
According to the BofA report, real yields and growth should be close \"in theory.\" The analysts noted that \"U.S. GDP has already reached its pre-COVID-19 level.\"
\n
In the past 60 years, real yields on the 10-year Treasury yields \"have been negative only during severe global shocks, including the two oil price shocks in the 1970s and the Eurozone crisis in 2012,\" according to the BofA research report. \"In the past, U.S. real yields never stayed negative for more than a year,\" the strategists said.
\n
For private clients worried about rising inflation, hard assets such as real estate may be one area to consider adding exposure for protection, according to Goldman's Naison-Tarajano.
\n
In the meantime, positive nominal yields for U.S. Treasurys, however low, may still look attractive next to negative yields on other sovereign bonds such as in Europe, according to Naison-Tarajano. The yield on 10-year German government bond , for example, is trading at a negative rate.
\n
\"If you want to have cash to stay nimble to act when the market dislocates and be opportunistic, said Naison-Tarajano, \"I'm still very supportive of holding\" some Treasurys. Maybe not as much as 40% of portfolios, she said, but some exposure is \"ok\" even if it means earning \"very little.\"
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Here's how Goldman Sachs is advising private-wealth clients in 'confusing' market
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nHere's how Goldman Sachs is advising private-wealth clients in 'confusing' market\n
\n\n
\n\n\n<div class=\"head\" \">\n\n\n

\n\n
\n
Dow Jones
\n
2021-08-06 10:16
\n
\n\n
\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
'Is the rate market telling us something that the equity market isn't aware of yet?' says Goldman's Sara Naison-Tarajano.
\n
Even professional investors are grappling with how to read markets in the pandemic.
\n
The \"striking\" decline in the 10-year Treasury yield since May is a bit \"confusing,\" said Sara Naison-Tarajano, the global head of capital markets for Goldman Sachs Group's private wealth management division, in an interview.
\n
Some investors worry the drop may be signaling a looming correction for equities that's linked to concerns economic growth will slow as the pandemic drags on, said Naison-Tarajano, who also serves as global head of Goldman's Apex family office business.
\n
\"Is the rate market telling us something that the equity market isn't aware of yet?\" she said. \"We're going to watch it very quickly,\" said Naison-Tarajano, though at this point, she's not sure the recent slide in the 10-Year Treasury yield should be of \"extreme concern\" for clients.
\n
\"We are advising clients to certainly keep their holdings in equities,\" said Naison-Tarajano. \"If you had panicked and sold\" equities over the past year plus, she said, \"it's impossible to make up the returns that we've experienced.\"
\n
Major U.S. stock indexes are trading near record highs and haven't seen a big pullback in months. Until then, the story hasn’t really changed for troubled cannabis stocks such as Sundial Growers (NASDAQ:SNDL). But don’t tell that to the retail investors who are bidding up SNDL stock.
\n
On one level, I understand the fascination. Sundial is a penny stock, but it has a niche in the premium segment of the cannabis sector. So if cannabis stocks do take off, SNDL stock could soar much higher. And with a stock price of $1.27 (as of this writing), a $1,500 investment buys you a whole lot of shares.
\n
And I can’t argue with those that bought the stock on Jan. 26, and have watched the stock climb over 170%. However, with a gain like that, you might expect investors to pocket their gains and move forward. Instead it looks like the trading crowd is lining up to see how high they can make SNDL stock go.
\n
Over the next few minutes, I’d like to steer you clear of that idea.
\n
Investors Are Not Seeing the Whole Picture
\n
On Feb. 19, Sundial announced it would be converting approximately 98.3 million warrants into shares at a price of 80 cents and $1.10. This is generating $89.1 million in cash for Sundial. At the same time, Sundial announced it was issuing an additional 98.3 million warrants. These will give holders the right to purchase shares for $1.50 in the next 42 months.
\n
This can be a bullish argument for buying SNDL stock. Until then, the story hasn’t really changed for troubled cannabis stocks such as Sundial Growers (NASDAQ:SNDL). But don’t tell that to the retail investors who are bidding up SNDL stock.\nOn one level, I understand the fascination. Sundial is a penny stock, but it has a niche in the premium segment of the cannabis sector. So if cannabis stocks do take off, SNDL stock could soar much higher. And with a stock price of $1.27 (as of this writing), a $1,500 investment buys you a whole lot of shares.\nAnd I can’t argue with those that bought the stock on Jan. 26, and have watched the stock climb over 170%. However, with a gain like that, you might expect investors to pocket their gains and move forward. Instead it looks like the trading crowd is lining up to see how high they can make SNDL stock go.\nOver the next few minutes, I’d like to steer you clear of that idea.\nInvestors Are Not Seeing the Whole Picture\nOn Feb. 19, Sundial announced it would be converting approximately 98.3 million warrants into shares at a price of 80 cents and $1.10. This is generating $89.1 million in cash for Sundial. At the same time, Sundial announced it was issuing an additional 98.3 million warrants. These will give holders the right to purchase shares for $1.50 in the next 42 months.\nThis can be a bullish argument for buying SNDL stock. Nascent companies in a sector like cannabis can use stock offerings and issuing warrants as part of a strategy to pay down debt and accumulate cash. And Sundial has managed to do both of those.\nHowever, the other part of the story is that investors want to see progress in terms of revenue and earnings. And that’s where Sundial is failing to deliver. In fact, in its most recent quarter, the company reported a 33% drop in revenue. That would be nearly 20% of its sales. Executive compensation can be a tricky thing, but if nothing else the optics look bad.\nIs Sundial Looking to Buy or Get Bought?\nThe company’s$22 million investmentinto Indiva could be another reference point that bulls can reference. However, this investment is being done in the form of a brokered private placement. By itself that doesn’t mean anything. However, the fact that Sundial is faltering in revenue coupled with the recent payout to executives raise two caution flags as to the reasons Sundial is making this investment.\nPlus, as Mark Hake details, Sundial lent $58.9 million CAD to a division of Zenabis Global (OTCMKTS:ZBISF) which as Hake points out, it is unlikely that Zenabis will be able to repay.\nYou Can Wait on SNDL Stock\nIn a prior article, I suggested that the best hope for Sundial bulls might be to have the company get acquired. Adding Indiva’s portfolio of edibles to its product line may make Sundial a more attractive acquisition even with its share price rising. But the fact remains the financials for Sundial suggest that they have a narrow path to success.\nUnless you have a high appetite for risk, you should wait until the company reports earnings in late March to see if the revenue picture has improved. than anyone","content":"
SNDL stock is being driven up by the social media masses
\n
At some point, and maybe sooner than anyone thinks, the United States will make marijuana legal at the federal level.
Nascent companies in a sector like cannabis can use stock offerings and issuing warrants as part of a strategy to pay down debt and accumulate cash. And Sundial has managed to do both of those.
\n
However, the other part of the story is that investors want to see progress in terms of revenue and earnings. And that’s where Sundial is failing to deliver. In fact, in its most recent quarter, the company reported a 33% drop in revenue. And that was after a nearly 37% decline in revenue in the prior quarter. To raise even more concern, in March the company announced it was going to dispose of its Kamloops facility in British Columbia and suspend construction of its Merritt BC plant both due to declining consumer demand.
\n
But that didn’t stop the company from giving executives $2.47 million in share-based compensation. That would be nearly 20% of its sales. Executive compensation can be a tricky thing, but if nothing else the optics look bad.
\n
Is Sundial Looking to Buy or Get Bought?
\n
The company’s$22 million investmentinto Indiva could be another reference point that bulls can reference. However, this investment is being done in the form of a brokered private placement. By itself that doesn’t mean anything. However, the fact that Sundial is faltering in revenue coupled with the recent payout to executives raise two caution flags as to the reasons Sundial is making this investment.
\n
Plus, as Mark Hake details, Sundial lent $58.9 million CAD to a division of Zenabis Global (OTCMKTS:ZBISF) which as Hake points out, it is unlikely that Zenabis will be able to repay.
\n
You Can Wait on SNDL Stock
\n
In a prior article, I suggested that the best hope for Sundial bulls might be to have the company get acquired. Adding Indiva’s portfolio of edibles to its product line may make Sundial a more attractive acquisition even with its share price rising. But the fact remains the financials for Sundial suggest that they have a narrow path to success.
\n
Unless you have a high appetite for risk, you should wait until the company reports earnings in late March to see if the revenue picture has improved. Investors that are looking to buy SNDL stock as a quick trade may be rewarded. If you’re looking for an investment there appear to be more solid ways to play the cannabis sector.
","source":"lsy1606302653667","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Until Its Story Changes, Sundial Growers Is a Speculative Trade
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nUntil Its Story Changes, Sundial Growers Is a Speculative Trade\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-02-24 15:55 GMT+8 InvestorPlace\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
SNDL stock is being driven up by the social media masses\nAt some point, and maybe sooner than anyone thinks, the United States will make marijuana legal at the federal level.
