Fund managers therefore go out of their way to sell their losers prior to Dec. 31 in order to avoid the embarrassment of having to report that they had ever owned them.
\n
Just the opposite is the case for stocks that managers buy for window dressing. These are the stocks that already have been performing well and which managers want to show in their end-of-quarter holdings report. Their cosmetic buying will cause these stocks to perform even better — which, in turn, results in them falling back to earth once the new quarter comes around.
\n
As expected, January is the month in which the previous month’s worst performers fare best relative to the previous month’s best performers — a pattern known as the “short term reversal effect.” This is illustrated in the chart below, which reflects monthly data back to 1926. July is the second-most powerful month for this pattern. But has AMZN been the best Big Tech player at producing alpha? The Amazon Maven faces off six mega-cap stocks.

A few days ago, the Amazon Maven explained howa mere $100 monthly investment in Amazon stock (AMZN) -Get Report since the company’s 1997 IPO would have led to riches: $2.7 million today. It is hard to imagine a methodical, long-term investment having performed as well as this one.

But has AMZN shares created the most alpha within the mega-cap tech universe? Could investors have done much better by betting on names like Apple (AAPL) or Microsoft (MSFT) instead?

What is alpha?

First, it helps to look closer at the concept of alpha. Generally, alpha is thought to be the returns that an investor can earn in excess of a benchmark. In other words: how much has a stock or portfolio risen relative to the S&P 500 or the Nasdaq? Investopediasummarizesas follows:

Alpha (α) is a term used in investing to describe an investment strategy's ability to beat the market, or its ‘edge’. Alpha is also referred to as ‘excess return’ or ‘abnormal rate of return’.

To me, this is a good start. But alpha should also consider one crucial factor: risk.

Beating the S&P 500 might simply mean higher sensitivity to market forces (i.e. beta). So, the better question is: how much return can a stock producerelative to risk. I believe that this is a more complete view of alpha.

Amazon stock vs. the rest

Considering absolute returns only, Amazon stock ranks remarkably high within Big Tech for historical share price performance. The chart below shows that, over the past 10 years, AMZN has only lagged Tesla (TSLA) in annualized gains.

Now, let me introduce risk to the equation. Risk is often defined (maybe too simplistically) as volatility. The more a stock rises and falls from minute to minute, or day to day, or week to week, the riskier it is.

So, one way to assess a stock’s returns relative to risk, thus giving us a better idea of its alpha potential, is to divide annualized returns by annualized volatility. By this methodology, Amazon stock loses its silver medal to Microsoft.

One takeaway here is that, over the past decade, Amazon has achieved higher returns than any other FAAMG stock, but not without exposing investors to more volatility. If history repeats, investors should expect high returns to come alongside relatively sharper ups and downs as well.

Another way to think about risk, one that I have favored recently, is to think about sizable losses. A good question to ask would be: how much has a stock produced in average annual returns relative to its worst trailing 12-month (TTM) performance?

Using this methodology, not only does Amazon stock lose its silver medal, but it also drops out of the podium altogether. See chart below, and notice that Facebook has also performed better than Amazon in the past ten years in loss-adjusted terms.

Figure 4: Ratio: Annualized return vs. Worst TTM return.

DM Martins Research

Amazon, in fact, has one of the worst track records within Big Tech when it comes to sharp losses. By November 2008, AMZN had seen 57% of its value evaporate over the previous year. Only Alphabet, around the same time, performed any worse than this.

The key takeaways for investors

Having said the above, I think that Amazon investors can learn a few lessons from this historical price action analysis:

Amazon has been a high-performing name, both since the IPO and over the past decade. In absolute terms, it is hard to find many stocks that have consistently delivered outsized returns.

Once risk is introduced to the discussion, Amazon stock’s performance goes from “outstanding” to a less exhilarating “solid”. Peers like Tesla, Microsoft and even Facebook seem to have been better alpha producers. In the 10 years that preceded the pandemic, in fact, Amazon’s volatility-adjusted returns were about the same as the S&P 500’s.

AMZN investors should understand that the stock could continue to produce outsized gains, but also endure higher volatility and sharper losses, as it has in the last decade or more.

As always, past performance is not a guarantee of future results. Use history as a rough guide to set expectations, but understand that share price behavior can be quite different going forward.

Twitter speaks

Pop quiz: relative to volatility (that is, in risk-adjusted terms), which of the following mega-cap tech stock has delivered the best returns in the past 10 year? But has AMZN been the best Big Tech player at producing alpha? The Amazon Maven faces off six mega-cap stocks.A few days ago, the Amazon Maven explained howa mere $100 monthly investment in Amazon stock (AMZN) -Get Report since the company’s 1997 IPO would have led to riches: $2.7 million today. It is hard to imagine a methodical, long-term investment having performed as well as this one.But has AMZN shares created the most alpha within the mega-cap tech universe? Could investors have done much better by betting on names like Apple (AAPL) or Microsoft (MSFT) instead? What is alpha?First, it helps to look closer at the concept of alpha. Generally, alpha is thought to be the returns that an investor can earn in excess of a benchmark. In other words: how much has a stock or portfolio risen relative to the S&P 500 or the Nasdaq? Investopediasummarizesas follows:Alpha (α) is a term used in investing to describe an investment strategy's ability to beat the market, or its ‘edge’. Alpha is also referred to as ‘excess return’ or ‘abnormal rate of return’.To me, this is a good start. But alpha should also consider one crucial factor: risk.Beating the S&P 500 might simply mean higher sensitivity to market forces (i.e. beta). So, the better question is: how much return can a stock producerelative to risk. I believe that this is a more complete view of alpha.Amazon stock vs. the restConsidering absolute returns only, Amazon stock ranks remarkably high within Big Tech for historical share price performance. The chart below shows that, over the past 10 years, AMZN has only lagged Tesla (TSLA) in annualized gains. Now, let me introduce risk to the equation. Risk is often defined (maybe too simplistically) as volatility. The more a stock rises and falls from minute to minute, or day to day, or week to week, the riskier it is.So, one way to assess a stock’s returns relative to risk, thus giving us a better idea of its alpha potential, is to divide annualized returns by annualized volatility. By this methodology, Amazon stock loses its silver medal to Microsoft. One takeaway here is that, over the past decade, Amazon has achieved higher returns than any other FAAMG stock, but not without exposing investors to more volatility. If history repeats, investors should expect high returns to come alongside relatively sharper ups and downs as well.Another way to think about risk, one that I have favored recently, is to think about sizable losses. A good question to ask would be: how much has a stock produced in average annual returns relative to its worst trailing 12-month (TTM) performance?Using this methodology, not only does Amazon stock lose its silver medal, but it also drops out of the podium altogether. See chart below, and notice that Facebook has also performed better than Amazon in the past ten years in loss-adjusted terms.Figure 4: Ratio: Annualized return vs. Worst TTM return.DM Martins ResearchAmazon, in fact, has one of the worst track records within Big Tech when it comes to sharp losses. By November 2008, AMZN had seen 57% of its value evaporate over the previous year. Only Alphabet, around the same time, performed any worse than this. The key takeaways for investorsHaving said the above, I think that Amazon investors can learn a few lessons from this historical price action analysis:Amazon has been a high-performing name, both since the IPO and over the past decade. In absolute terms, it is hard to find many stocks that have consistently delivered outsized returns.Once risk is introduced to the discussion, Amazon stock’s performance goes from “outstanding” to a less exhilarating “solid”. Peers like Tesla, Microsoft and even Facebook seem to have been better alpha producers. In the 10 years that preceded the pandemic, in fact, Amazon’s volatility-adjusted returns were about the same as the S&P 500’s.AMZN investors should understand that the stock could continue to produce outsized gains, but also endure higher volatility and sharper losses, as it has in the last decade or more.As always, past performance is not a guarantee of future results. Use history as a rough guide to set expectations, but understand that share price behavior can be quite different going forward.Twitter speaksPop quiz: relative to volatility (that is, in risk-adjusted terms), which of the following mega-cap tech stock has delivered the best returns in the past 10 year? Earlier this week, the Federal Reserve's Federal Open Market Committee made its most significant hawkish shift yet, accelerating its timeline for hiking the Federal Funds rate to 2023 from 2024 and setting the table to end asset repurchases as soon as this year.
\n
The Central Bank left little doubt government's one-two monetary and fiscal punch has reinvigorated economic activity. Exiting the meeting, bankers believe gross domestic product, or GDP, willgrow 7%this year, up from its 6.5% forecast in March, resulting in core inflation of 3%, up from its prior outlook for 2.2%.
\n
Historically, the Federal Reserve has a reputation for under estimating inflationary pressure, forcing it to act more quickly and aggressively than it originally signals. Whether this means the Fed is behind the inflationary curve now is anyone's guess, but if it is, then we may see an even more hawkish tone over the coming year.
\n
For now, the Federal Reserve's stance has sparked a tug-of-war between those arguing rate hikes are too far off in the future to worry of a slowdown and those believing the Fed's timeline is still too optimistic. The knee-jerk reaction to its announcement was to buy speculative stocks, including technology, and sell mid-cycle stocks, such as energy. Further confusing the matter, late-cycle baskets, including healthcare and utilities, made the biggest move up in our large-cap sector ranking this week (see below), suggesting we may be closer to an economic reckoning than originally thought.
\n
The best sectors today
\n
Weekly, we rank 1,600 institutional-quality stocks across seven factors. In short, our scoring system incorporates earnings growth, earnings beats, insider buying, short- and long-term money flows, days to cover held short, trends in valuation, and seasonality.
\n
Once stocks run our gauntlet, we aggregate individual scores by sector to gain insight into the best baskets to over- or under-weight.
\n
Previously, I've written abouttechnology's relative weaknessin our ranking. The sector still scores below our average universe score, despite catching bids earlier this week. It will be interesting to see if this week's buying spree continues, helping technology climb our ranking, especially since technology doesn't normally score below average for long. For now, staying industry and stock specific in technology still appears to be the best bet.
\n
Source: Top Stocks for Tomorrow.
\n
We also break out our sector scores by market cap every week.
\n
Often, sectors move up or down in our large-cap ranking sooner than they do in mid cap or small cap; giving investors an early signal of shifting tides. For this reason, paying close attention to the large cap ranking can pay off even if you invest in smaller companies.
\n
This week, both healthcare and utilities moved up in our large-cap ranking. The improvement could reflect growing clarity into the groups because of the Supreme Court's decision to keep the Affordable Care Act in place and energy strains in Texas, California, and elsewhere, respectively. Perhaps, the move up in these baskets, which are relatively inelastic to economic activity, signals the first Fed Funds rate hike will happen in 2022, not 2023, though.
\n
Overall, REITs, healthcare, energy, utilities, and financials are top rated in large cap, while technology, consumer goods, and basics score below average. In mid cap, energy, REITs, utilities, and consumer goods are best, while technology, industrials, basics, and healthcare are low scoring. The top small cap sectors are REITs, energy, financials, and services and the lowest-scoring baskets are healthcare, technology, and basics. Focusing on stocks in top-scoring sectors and staying selective in low-scoring sectors could be the best way to find alpha from here.
\n
Source: Top Stocks for Tomorrow.
\n
The strongest scoring stocks to buy
\n
As I mentioned, we score stocks in our universe weekly, allowing us to rank them from best to worst by screening criteria, such as market cap and sector. For example, the following stock ideas come from our weekly report highlighting the highest-scoring stocks in our universe by sector, regardless of market cap.
\n
Over 200 stocks made the cut for this report, including the following nine stocks.
\n
First up, investors ought to think about pharmaceutical stocks given large-cap healthcare is improving in our sector work. Over 20 healthcare stocks made our best stocks list this week, including AbbVie(NYSE:ABBV)and Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY).
\n
In the U.S., AbbVie faces-off against generic versions of its mega-blockbuster immunology drug, Humira, in 2023, but up-and-coming top sellers, including Rinvoq and Skyrizi, should helpinsulate it against a drop-off in sales. Botox also provides a nice revenue tailwind because aesthetics demand isalready above pre-COVID levelsthanks to post-vaccination doctor visits. Moonshot-style data is coming soon, too, with trial results in Alzheimer's anticipated this summer and pivotal results from Vraylar's major depressive disorder trials later this year. Finally, since it's paying down debt and still guiding for high single-digit sales growth from 2025 to 2029, despite Humira's loss of exclusivity, its 4.5% dividend appears to be on solid ground.
\n
Improving post-vaccination trends may make it time to watch Bristol-Myers, too. It's heavily exposed to cancer indications through it's top-selling Opdivo and Yervoy, and earlier this month, managementsaidCOVID-era, double-digit declines in new patient starts for oncology drugs improved to a 5% to 10% decline. If trends continue improving, then oncology drug demand could be back to a pre-COVID levels soon. Similarly, rebounding doctor visits also support sales of Bristol-Myers' Eliquis, a blockbuster oral anticoagulant used in cardiovascular disease.
\n
Outside of healthcare, energy stocks could make sense given increasing global GDP and inflation forecasts. Oil stocks sold off following the Fed's update last week, however, measured production growth should help keep per barrel prices high at E&P companies, including Hess Corp (HES), while also providing demand tailwinds for services providers, including Oceaneering International (OII).
\n
Hess Corp'scollaborationoffshore Guyana with Exxon Mobil (XOM) gives it 30% exposure to over 9 billion barrels of oil equivalent in the Stabroek Block, and reserves are climbing thanks to new discoveries. Its breakeven cost in the play ranges from $25 to $35 per barrel of Brent Crude, so with current prices above $70, new production coming online could help boost earnings nicely over the next few years.
\n
Anoffshore energy projectsplayer, Oceaneering Int'l could see demand for its remotely-operated vehicles (ROVs), subsea project management, and manufactured products, such as umbilicals, increase nicely if offshore activity picks up because of higher per barrel prices. In Q1, ROV fleet utilization was just 53%, yet day rates improved 7% quarter over quarter, and for the full year, management expects fleet utilization to be in thehigh 50%range. With a project in Angola supported project management revenue this year, a potential uptick in book-to-bill for manufactured products, and increasing ROV utilization, it could still be early innings for the company's turnaround.
\n
There are plenty of ideas outside healthcare and energy, too. Earlier this week, the Federal Reserve's Federal Open Market Committee made its most significant hawkish shift yet, accelerating its timeline for hiking the Federal Funds rate to 2023 from 2024 and setting the table to end asset repurchases as soon as this year.\nThe Central Bank left little doubt government's one-two monetary and fiscal punch has reinvigorated economic activity. Exiting the meeting, bankers believe gross domestic product, or GDP, willgrow 7%this year, up from its 6.5% forecast in March, resulting in core inflation of 3%, up from its prior outlook for 2.2%.\nHistorically, the Federal Reserve has a reputation for under estimating inflationary pressure, forcing it to act more quickly and aggressively than it originally signals. Whether this means the Fed is behind the inflationary curve now is anyone's guess, but if it is, then we may see an even more hawkish tone over the coming year.\nFor now, the Federal Reserve's stance has sparked a tug-of-war between those arguing rate hikes are too far off in the future to worry of a slowdown and those believing the Fed's timeline is still too optimistic. The knee-jerk reaction to its announcement was to buy speculative stocks, including technology, and sell mid-cycle stocks, such as energy. Further confusing the matter, late-cycle baskets, including healthcare and utilities, made the biggest move up in our large-cap sector ranking this week (see below), suggesting we may be closer to an economic reckoning than originally thought.\nThe best sectors today\nWeekly, we rank 1,600 institutional-quality stocks across seven factors. In short, our scoring system incorporates earnings growth, earnings beats, insider buying, short- and long-term money flows, days to cover held short, trends in valuation, and seasonality.\nOnce stocks run our gauntlet, we aggregate individual scores by sector to gain insight into the best baskets to over- or under-weight.\nPreviously, I've written abouttechnology's relative weaknessin our ranking. The sector still scores below our average universe score, despite catching bids earlier this week. It will be interesting to see if this week's buying spree continues, helping technology climb our ranking, especially since technology doesn't normally score below average for long. For now, staying industry and stock specific in technology still appears to be the best bet.\nSource: Top Stocks for Tomorrow.\nWe also break out our sector scores by market cap every week.\nOften, sectors move up or down in our large-cap ranking sooner than they do in mid cap or small cap; giving investors an early signal of shifting tides. For this reason, paying close attention to the large cap ranking can pay off even if you invest in smaller companies.\nThis week, both healthcare and utilities moved up in our large-cap ranking. The improvement could reflect growing clarity into the groups because of the Supreme Court's decision to keep the Affordable Care Act in place and energy strains in Texas, California, and elsewhere, respectively. Perhaps, the move up in these baskets, which are relatively inelastic to economic activity, signals the first Fed Funds rate hike will happen in 2022, not 2023, though.\nOverall, REITs, healthcare, energy, utilities, and financials are top rated in large cap, while technology, consumer goods, and basics score below average. In mid cap, energy, REITs, utilities, and consumer goods are best, while technology, industrials, basics, and healthcare are low scoring. The top small cap sectors are REITs, energy, financials, and services and the lowest-scoring baskets are healthcare, technology, and basics. Focusing on stocks in top-scoring sectors and staying selective in low-scoring sectors could be the best way to find alpha from here.\nSource: Top Stocks for Tomorrow.\nThe strongest scoring stocks to buy\nAs I mentioned, we score stocks in our universe weekly, allowing us to rank them from best to worst by screening criteria, such as market cap and sector. For example, the following stock ideas come from our weekly report highlighting the highest-scoring stocks in our universe by sector, regardless of market cap.\nOver 200 stocks made the cut for this report, including the following nine stocks.\nFirst up, investors ought to think about pharmaceutical stocks given large-cap healthcare is improving in our sector work. Over 20 healthcare stocks made our best stocks list this week, including AbbVie(NYSE:ABBV)and Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY).\nIn the U.S., AbbVie faces-off against generic versions of its mega-blockbuster immunology drug, Humira, in 2023, but up-and-coming top sellers, including Rinvoq and Skyrizi, should helpinsulate it against a drop-off in sales. Finally, since it's paying down debt and still guiding for high single-digit sales growth from 2025 to 2029, despite Humira's loss of exclusivity, its 4.5% dividend appears to be on solid ground.\nImproving post-vaccination trends may make it time to watch Bristol-Myers, too. Similarly, rebounding doctor visits also support sales of Bristol-Myers' Eliquis, a blockbuster oral anticoagulant used in cardiovascular disease.\nOutside of healthcare, energy stocks could make sense given increasing global GDP and inflation forecasts. Oil stocks sold off following the Fed's update last week, however, measured production growth should help keep per barrel prices high at E&P companies, including Hess Corp (HES), while also providing demand tailwinds for services providers, including Oceaneering International (OII).\nHess Corp'scollaborationoffshore Guyana with Exxon Mobil (XOM) gives it 30% exposure to over 9 billion barrels of oil equivalent in the Stabroek Block, and reserves are climbing thanks to new discoveries. Its breakeven cost in the play ranges from $25 to $35 per barrel of Brent Crude, so with current prices above $70, new production coming online could help boost earnings nicely over the next few years.\nAnoffshore energy projectsplayer, Oceaneering Int'l could see demand for its remotely-operated vehicles (ROVs), subsea project management, and manufactured products, such as umbilicals, increase nicely if offshore activity picks up because of higher per barrel prices. In Q1, ROV fleet utilization was just 53%, yet day rates improved 7% quarter over quarter, and for the full year, management expects fleet utilization to be in thehigh 50%range. With a project in Angola supported project management revenue this year, a potential uptick in book-to-bill for manufactured products, and increasing ROV utilization, it could still be early innings for the company's turnaround.\nThere are plenty of ideas outside healthcare and energy, too. For example, nearly 50 technology stocks made our best list, despite the sector scoring below average in our sector ranking, including Microsoft (MSFT) and Shopify (SHOP), which benefit from increasing data in the cloud and e-commerce tailwinds, respectively. Amazon.com (AMZN) is also top-scoring, benefiting from growing e-commerce share of total retail sales and Prime Day, which could add over $10 billion in revenue this year, based on2020's performance.\nOur best list also includes a slate of services stocks, including Stitch Fix (SFIX) and Revolve Group (RVLV). As younger workers refresh wardrobes because post-vaccination, return to office trends, those companies could see a healthy uptake in sales.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":39,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":161071400,"gmtCreate":1623898443800,"gmtModify":1703822960484,"author":{"id":"3554802124741992","authorId":"3554802124741992","name":"Sharinganjx","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f5613450a12b2554a5270638dd67fcb4","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3554802124741992","authorIdStr":"3554802124741992"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Yay","listText":"Yay","text":"Yay","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/161071400","repostId":"2144713861","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2144713861","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Reuters.com brings you the latest news from around the world, covering breaking news in markets, business, politics, entertainment and technology","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Reuters","id":"1036604489","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/443ce19704621c837795676028cec868"},"pubTimestamp":1623883569,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2144713861?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-06-17 06:46","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Wall Street closes lower as Fed officials project rate hikes for 2023","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2144713861","media":"Reuters","summary":"June 16 - The three main Wall Street indexes all closed down on Wednesday, as U.S. Federal Reserve officials unnerved investors with indications that the central bank could begin rising interest rates in 2023, a year earlier than expected.New projections saw a majority of 11 of 18 U.S. central bank officials pencil in at least two quarter-percentage-point rate increases for 2023. They've retired the phrase 'thinking about thinking about tapering', and we expect that in the next few meetings, the committee will likely formally start discussions of tapering,\" BNP's Ahn said.\nThe Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 265.66 points, or 0.77%, to 34,033.67, the S&P 500 lost 22.89 points, or 0.54%, to 4,223.7 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 33.17 points, or 0.24%, to 14,039.68.\nOnly two of the S&P's 11 main sector indexes ended in positive territory: consumer discretionary and retail.\nThe decliners were led by utilities, materials, and consumer staples.\nVolume on U.S. exchanges was 10.90 billion shares, compared with the 10.38 billion average over the last 20 trading days.\nThe S&P 500 posted 25 new 52-week highs and 1 new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 95 new highs and 30 new lows.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":74,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":181033090,"gmtCreate":1623366509610,"gmtModify":1704201614312,"author":{"id":"3554802124741992","authorId":"3554802124741992","name":"Sharinganjx","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f5613450a12b2554a5270638dd67fcb4","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3554802124741992","authorIdStr":"3554802124741992"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Good","listText":"Good","text":"Good","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/181033090","repostId":"1193863762","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1193863762","pubTimestamp":1623334800,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1193863762?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-06-10 22:20","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Global Semiconductor annual sales projected to increase 19.7% in 2021, 8.8% in 2022","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1193863762","media":"seekingalpha","summary":"(June 10) Semiconductor stocks rose in morning trading.\nRelated: Semiconductor Watchlist: Jim Cramer","content":"
(June 10) Semiconductor stocks rose in morning trading.
\n
Related: Semiconductor Watchlist: Jim Cramer Says to Own Nvidia, AMD and Broadcom
\n

\n
According to World Semiconductor Trade Statistics estimates, the global semiconductor market will rise from 6.8% in 2020 to 19.7% thisyear to ~$527B.
\n
The most significant growth contributors are Memory with 31.7%, followed by Sensors with 22.4% and, Analog with 21.7%. Which vehicle maker offers the best deal based on market opportunity, scale, revenue model, growth prospects and valuation? I will compare Ford against NIO in each category and issue a final verdict at the end.
\n
Ford vs. NIO: The battle for the global electric vehicle market is heating up
\n
Although there is a world of difference between Ford and NIO, both companies are set to go toe-to-toe in the rapidly growing global electric vehicle market. Ford’s fleet is not yet EV-focused but this is going to change: Feeling that the EV race is heating up, Ford said it is accelerating its electrification plan by investing $30B into its EV manufacturing capabilities until 2025. Ford’s previous capital plan called for a $22B investment in zero-emission vehicles. Ford also set an ambitious sales goal: 40% of its global sales will be electric within the next decade and 33% of pickup truck sales. Electric vehicle sales account for just 1% of Ford's sales today. As Ford is phasing out combustion engines, it is set to evolve into an all-electric vehicle maker by 2040.
\n
Market opportunity
\n
In 2020, 3.2m electric vehicles were sold in the world which represented a small market share of just 4.2%. China, however, was responsible for buying 41% of all electric vehicles in the world in 2020. Chinese buyers purchased 1.3m electric vehicles last year and sales are set to grow fast as Beijing seeks to boost EV adoption. The second largest market for electric vehicles was Europe which accounted for 42% of global EV sales. The US is only the third-largest market for plug-in electric vehicles in the world.
\n
(Source: Wikipedia)
\n
China, by far, is the fastest growing EV market in the world, although Europe is catching up fast, in part due to a legislative efforts to increase adoption of zero-emission passenger vehicles and because of massive investments in a Europe-wide charging station network. NIO is on the cusp of entering the European market in a bid to grow market share in the world’s second-largest EV market before the competition is ready.
\n
Beijing is a driver behind the electrification of the Chinese auto industry: The government wants to see a twenty percent share of electric vehicles for new car sales by 2025 which will drive EV penetration in NIO’s home market.
\n
(Source:Schroders)
\n
Turning to growth projections.
\n
With more favorable government policies for EV makers in places like China and Europe, these markets are poised to see the fastest sales growth and the highest EV adoption rates in the world. China is not only the largest market due to population size but is also expected to outperform all other markets in the world in EV sales until 2030.
\n
(Source:McKinsey)
\n
Since China has a larger total market size, a higher EV adoption rate, stronger expected sales growth and a more favorable regulatory framework, the winner here would be: NIO.
\n
Scale and manufacturing competence
\n
Ford has a century’s worth of manufacturing experience. But Ford, so far, has only one all-electric vehicle in its product line-up that compares to NIO: The Mustang Mach-E SUV. In 2022, Ford will begin to sell the all-electric F-150 Lightening which builds on the success of Ford’s best-selling pick-up truck. NIO already has a stronger product catalog including the 5-seater ES6 SUV, the 5-seater coupe SUV EC6 and the ES8, a 6-seater and 7-seater full-sized SUV.
\n
Since NIO is solely focused on producing EVs and occupies a very small and defined niche, the Chinese firm has an advantage as far as EV-manufacturing expertise goes. The question is how long this advantage can last. Ford has extensive experience in building cars and can leverage a global manufacturing base to ramp up EV production faster than any niche EV maker could ever hope to achieve. This makes Ford a very serious rival not only to Tesla (TSLA) in the US, but also to NIO abroad. Ford is accelerating its electrification plans and it has the resources and the ambition to become a leader in EVs within the next decade. Ford’s proposed $30B spending on the electrification of its fleet will accelerate its transformation and turn Ford into a long term threat to other EV makers.
\n
Winner here: Ford.
\n
Differentiation and BaaS revenue model
\n
Both Ford and NIO know about the importance of differentiation in a market that will only get more competitive over time, which is why both companies are investing heavily in a related field that can break or solidify dominance in the EV market: Battery technology.
\n
Ford is forming a joint venture with South Korean battery technology company SK Innovation to secure supply of traction battery cells and array modules. The joint venture is meant to accelerate battery deliveries and will produce approximately 60 GWh annually, enough to cover 25% of Ford’s estimated annual energy demand by 2030. NIO is also investing in battery technology and has formed its own joint venture to secure battery supply.
\n
The difference to Ford is that NIO’s battery investment strategy revolves around a battery subscription model, also called “battery-as-a-service”, which creates a strong, long term revenue opportunity for the Chinese vehicle maker. Under this “BaaS” model, users who buy a NIO electric vehicle get a 70,000 RMB initial discount, equivalent to $10,800, and can sign up for a monthly subscription to rent a rechargeable 70 kWh battery. Batteries can then be exchanged at one of NIO’s battery-swapping stations which can be found in most big Chinese cities. A battery subscription costs 980 RMB monthly which is the equivalent of $150.
\n
The BaaS model has a couple of benefits for both the vehicle maker and the user: Purchasing an electric vehicle from NIO gets a lot more affordable due to the up-front discount and the subscription model ensures that users benefit from advancement in battery technology and better performance over time. Decoupling battery costs from vehicle prices creates an entirely new revenue stream on a subscription basis for NIO. Revenues from “BaaS” subscriptions could be used to increase the density of NIO’s network of charging/replacement stations. The battery subscription model also binds customers to NIO, potentially increasing customer lifetime value.
\n
Ford and NIO are primed to benefit from falling battery costs for electric vehicles as they ramp up capital allocations. As more investments flow into developing more efficient batteries, performance will go up and costs will go down which should drive EV adoption and benefit all EV makers. This is because lower battery prices make EVs more competitive to passenger vehicles with combustion engines. But since NIO is structuring a part of its business model explicitly around battery subscriptions, NIO could benefit more than Ford.
\n
Battery costs for EVs have decreased 70% since 2014, based on information provided by investment firm Schroders, and are set to decrease more this decade.
\n
(Source: Schroders)
\n
The “BaaS” model is genius and could develop into a $500M a year revenue opportunity for NIO long term. Although Ford is ramping up its investments in battery technology, the winner in this category is: NIO.
\n
Sales growth and valuation
\n
Ford’s sales in May grew 4.1% Y/Y but electrified vehicle sales (including hybrids) surged 184% Y/Y as Ford sold a record 10,364 EVs/hybrids in May. Escape electrified sales and Explorer Hybrid grew sales at 125% and 132% Y/Y showing strong customer uptake. NIO delivered 6,711 vehicles last month including 3,017 ES6s, 1,412 ES8s and 2,282 EC6s. Total Y/Y delivery growth for May was 95.3%.
\n
Ford's sales are fifty-four times larger than NIO's which creates more sales growth and revaluation potential for NIO.
\n
Data by YCharts
\n
The difference in valuation between Ford and NIO is like the difference between night and day. This is because Ford is still seen as a mature vehicle maker with expected enterprise sales growth in the low-to-mid digits, despite explosive growth in the EV category. Ford is expected to grow revenues by 33% until FY 2025 (base year: FY 2020) and NIO by 808%!
\n
Due to these differences in sales growth, NIO is the complete opposite of Ford, at least as far as valuation goes. The Chinese EV-maker is expected to see sales and delivery growth close to 100% this year and since NIO is only dealing in EVs, NIO gets a much higher market-cap-to-sales ratio than Ford.
\n
(Source: Author)
\n
NIO has larger risks...
\n
NIO is the more risky venture, but also the one that offers the most promise. Government policy favors EV-makers like NIO. The potential for total global sales growth is larger for NIO as it operates from a smaller revenue base compared to Ford. But there are also a few things that work against NIO. For example, recalls due to production defects would be a much bigger challenge for NIO to overcome than for Ford which can rely on a global service and distribution network. NIO’s valuation is also not without risk as an unexpected slowing of sales growth due to production setbacks would leave a much larger dent in the financials.
\n
Final verdict
\n
NIO is definitely the more “sexy” vehicle maker. Strong adoption and sales growth in China and Europe support NIO. Its super smart BaaS model which decouples vehicle purchase prices from battery costs is genius. You pay a high price for this growth but the market opportunity for NIO is immense.
\n
Ford’s EV sales are booming and the percentage of EV sales will increase as the vehicle maker electrifies its fleet. Which vehicle maker offers the best deal based on market opportunity, scale, revenue model, growth prospects and valuation? I will compare Ford against NIO in each category and issue a final verdict at the end.\nFord vs. NIO: The battle for the global electric vehicle market is heating up\nAlthough there is a world of difference between Ford and NIO, both companies are set to go toe-to-toe in the rapidly growing global electric vehicle market. Ford’s fleet is not yet EV-focused but this is going to change: Feeling that the EV race is heating up, Ford said it is accelerating its electrification plan by investing $30B into its EV manufacturing capabilities until 2025. Ford’s previous capital plan called for a $22B investment in zero-emission vehicles. Ford also set an ambitious sales goal: 40% of its global sales will be electric within the next decade and 33% of pickup truck sales. Electric vehicle sales account for just 1% of Ford's sales today. As Ford is phasing out combustion engines, it is set to evolve into an all-electric vehicle maker by 2040.\nMarket opportunity\nIn 2020, 3.2m electric vehicles were sold in the world which represented a small market share of just 4.2%. China, however, was responsible for buying 41% of all electric vehicles in the world in 2020. Chinese buyers purchased 1.3m electric vehicles last year and sales are set to grow fast as Beijing seeks to boost EV adoption. The second largest market for electric vehicles was Europe which accounted for 42% of global EV sales. The US is only the third-largest market for plug-in electric vehicles in the world.\n(Source: Wikipedia)\nChina, by far, is the fastest growing EV market in the world, although Europe is catching up fast, in part due to a legislative efforts to increase adoption of zero-emission passenger vehicles and because of massive investments in a Europe-wide charging station network. NIO is on the cusp of entering the European market in a bid to grow market share in the world’s second-largest EV market before the competition is ready.\nBeijing is a driver behind the electrification of the Chinese auto industry: The government wants to see a twenty percent share of electric vehicles for new car sales by 2025 which will drive EV penetration in NIO’s home market.\n(Source:Schroders)\nTurning to growth projections.\nWith more favorable government policies for EV makers in places like China and Europe, these markets are poised to see the fastest sales growth and the highest EV adoption rates in the world. China is not only the largest market due to population size but is also expected to outperform all other markets in the world in EV sales until 2030.\n(Source:McKinsey)\nSince China has a larger total market size, a higher EV adoption rate, stronger expected sales growth and a more favorable regulatory framework, the winner here would be: NIO.\nScale and manufacturing competence\nFord has a century’s worth of manufacturing experience. But Ford, so far, has only one all-electric vehicle in its product line-up that compares to NIO: The Mustang Mach-E SUV. In 2022, Ford will begin to sell the all-electric F-150 Lightening which builds on the success of Ford’s best-selling pick-up truck. NIO already has a stronger product catalog including the 5-seater ES6 SUV, the 5-seater coupe SUV EC6 and the ES8, a 6-seater and 7-seater full-sized SUV.\nSince NIO is solely focused on producing EVs and occupies a very small and defined niche, the Chinese firm has an advantage as far as EV-manufacturing expertise goes. The question is how long this advantage can last. Ford has extensive experience in building cars and can leverage a global manufacturing base to ramp up EV production faster than any niche EV maker could ever hope to achieve. This makes Ford a very serious rival not only to Tesla (TSLA) in the US, but also to NIO abroad. Ford is accelerating its electrification plans and it has the resources and the ambition to become a leader in EVs within the next decade. Ford’s proposed $30B spending on the electrification of its fleet will accelerate its transformation and turn Ford into a long term threat to other EV makers.\nWinner here: Ford.\nDifferentiation and BaaS revenue model\nBoth Ford and NIO know about the importance of differentiation in a market that will only get more competitive over time, which is why both companies are investing heavily in a related field that can break or solidify dominance in the EV market: Battery technology.\nFord is forming a joint venture with South Korean battery technology company SK Innovation to secure supply of traction battery cells and array modules. The joint venture is meant to accelerate battery deliveries and will produce approximately 60 GWh annually, enough to cover 25% of Ford’s estimated annual energy demand by 2030. NIO is also investing in battery technology and has formed its own joint venture to secure battery supply.\nThe difference to Ford is that NIO’s battery investment strategy revolves around a battery subscription model, also called “battery-as-a-service”, which creates a strong, long term revenue opportunity for the Chinese vehicle maker. Under this “BaaS” model, users who buy a NIO electric vehicle get a 70,000 RMB initial discount, equivalent to $10,800, and can sign up for a monthly subscription to rent a rechargeable 70 kWh battery. Batteries can then be exchanged at one of NIO’s battery-swapping stations which can be found in most big Chinese cities. A battery subscription costs 980 RMB monthly which is the equivalent of $150.\nThe BaaS model has a couple of benefits for both the vehicle maker and the user: Purchasing an electric vehicle from NIO gets a lot more affordable due to the up-front discount and the subscription model ensures that users benefit from advancement in battery technology and better performance over time. Decoupling battery costs from vehicle prices creates an entirely new revenue stream on a subscription basis for NIO. Revenues from “BaaS” subscriptions could be used to increase the density of NIO’s network of charging/replacement stations. The battery subscription model also binds customers to NIO, potentially increasing customer lifetime value.\nFord and NIO are primed to benefit from falling battery costs for electric vehicles as they ramp up capital allocations. As more investments flow into developing more efficient batteries, performance will go up and costs will go down which should drive EV adoption and benefit all EV makers. This is because lower battery prices make EVs more competitive to passenger vehicles with combustion engines. But since NIO is structuring a part of its business model explicitly around battery subscriptions, NIO could benefit more than Ford.\nBattery costs for EVs have decreased 70% since 2014, based on information provided by investment firm Schroders, and are set to decrease more this decade.\n(Source: Schroders)\nThe “BaaS” model is genius and could develop into a $500M a year revenue opportunity for NIO long term. Although Ford is ramping up its investments in battery technology, the winner in this category is: NIO.\nSales growth and valuation\nFord’s sales in May grew 4.1% Y/Y but electrified vehicle sales (including hybrids) surged 184% Y/Y as Ford sold a record 10,364 EVs/hybrids in May. Escape electrified sales and Explorer Hybrid grew sales at 125% and 132% Y/Y showing strong customer uptake. NIO delivered 6,711 vehicles last month including 3,017 ES6s, 1,412 ES8s and 2,282 EC6s. Total Y/Y delivery growth for May was 95.3%.\nFord's sales are fifty-four times larger than NIO's which creates more sales growth and revaluation potential for NIO.\nData by YCharts\nThe difference in valuation between Ford and NIO is like the difference between night and day. This is because Ford is still seen as a mature vehicle maker with expected enterprise sales growth in the low-to-mid digits, despite explosive growth in the EV category. Ford is expected to grow revenues by 33% until FY 2025 (base year: FY 2020) and NIO by 808%!\nDue to these differences in sales growth, NIO is the complete opposite of Ford, at least as far as valuation goes. The Chinese EV-maker is expected to see sales and delivery growth close to 100% this year and since NIO is only dealing in EVs, NIO gets a much higher market-cap-to-sales ratio than Ford.\n(Source: Author)\nNIO has larger risks...\nNIO is the more risky venture, but also the one that offers the most promise. Government policy favors EV-makers like NIO. The potential for total global sales growth is larger for NIO as it operates from a smaller revenue base compared to Ford. But there are also a few things that work against NIO. For example, recalls due to production defects would be a much bigger challenge for NIO to overcome than for Ford which can rely on a global service and distribution network. NIO’s valuation is also not without risk as an unexpected slowing of sales growth due to production setbacks would leave a much larger dent in the financials.\nFinal verdict\nNIO is definitely the more “sexy” vehicle maker. Strong adoption and sales growth in China and Europe support NIO. Its super smart BaaS model which decouples vehicle purchase prices from battery costs is genius. You pay a high price for this growth but the market opportunity for NIO is immense.\nFord’s EV sales are booming and the percentage of EV sales will increase as the vehicle maker electrifies its fleet. Ford has a lot of potential in the EV market but since EV sales are still a relatively low percentage of total sales, it will take a long time for Ford to complete its transformation.\nIf you believe in the potential of the global EV market, buy NIO. If you believe in the potential of the global EV market and don’t like much risk, buy Ford.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":59,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":165747543,"gmtCreate":1624159403182,"gmtModify":1703829776442,"author":{"id":"3554802124741992","authorId":"3554802124741992","name":"Sharinganjx","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f5613450a12b2554a5270638dd67fcb4","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3554802124741992","authorIdStr":"3554802124741992"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Great","listText":"Great","text":"Great","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/165747543","repostId":"1113942445","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":72,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
