With a pullback in shares, some investors may be wondering: Is AMD stock a buy right now?
\n
AMD has staged an amazing turnaround over the past five years, fueled by new products and improved profitability. And AMD stock has climbed as a result.
\n
AMD competes withIntel(INTC) in making central processing units, or CPUs, for personal computers and servers. It also rivalsNvidia(NVDA) in the market for graphics processing units, or GPUs, for PCs, gaming consoles and data centers.
\n
Founded in May 1969, AMD went public in September 1972. AMD shifted to a fabless semiconductor business in March 2009 by spinning off its factories into a joint venture called GlobalFoundries.
\n
Chief Executive Lisa Su Making A Difference
\n
Current Chief Executive Lisa Su took the reins in October 2014. She shepherded the Santa Clara, Calif.-based company into a new era with its Ryzen PC processors and Epyc server chips in 2017.
\n
Under her supervision, AMD jumped ahead of Intel in making CPUs at smaller node sizes, giving its products an edge in speed and performance. AMD is making chips at 7-nanometer scale, while Intel has struggled to make chips at 10-nanometer scale. AMD is now developing chips at 5-nanometer scale. Circuit widths on chips are measured in nanometers, which are one-billionth of a meter.
\n
On July 23,Intel announced a six-month delayin production of its already behind-schedule 7-nanometer processors. Intel now expects to ship its first 7-nanometer processors in late 2022 or early 2023. By that time, AMD could be making 3-nanometer processors, analysts said.
\n
The situation has helped AMD take market share from Intel in PCs and servers. Those gains have buoyed AMD stock.
\n
Chip foundry Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing(TSM) produces AMD's chips.
\n
Su also is overseeing a potentially transformative acquisition. On Oct. 27, AMD announced an all-stock deal worth $35 billion to buyXilinx(XLNX) to expand its growing data-center business. However, AMD stock fell on theXilinx acquisition news. Critics said the acquisition complicates AMD's \"clean\" investor story around market share gains in processors.
\n
Intel Losing Market Share To AMD
\n
In the fourth quarter, Intel regained market share from AMD in CPUs for desktop and notebook PCs, according to Mercury Research. That ended a three-year streak of market share gains by AMD in the PC segment on a quarter-to-quarter basis. AMD also suffered supply constraints with its contract manufacturer in the period.
\n
AMD's unit share of desktop PC processor sales was 19.3% in the fourth quarter, down from 20.1% in the third quarter. However, it was up from 18.3% in the year-earlier period.
\n
AMD's unit share of notebook PC processor sales was 19% in the December quarter, down from 20.2% in the September quarter. But it was up from 16.2% in the year-earlier period.
\n
However, AMD continued to gain share in CPUs for servers during the fourth quarter. Its server CPU market share was 7.1% in the December quarter. With a pullback in shares, some investors may be wondering: Is AMD stock a buy right now?\nAMD has staged an amazing turnaround over the past five years, fueled by new products and improved profitability. And AMD stock has climbed as a result.\nAMD competes withIntel(INTC) in making central processing units, or CPUs, for personal computers and servers. It also rivalsNvidia(NVDA) in the market for graphics processing units, or GPUs, for PCs, gaming consoles and data centers.\nFounded in May 1969, AMD went public in September 1972. AMD shifted to a fabless semiconductor business in March 2009 by spinning off its factories into a joint venture called GlobalFoundries.\nChief Executive Lisa Su Making A Difference\nCurrent Chief Executive Lisa Su took the reins in October 2014. She shepherded the Santa Clara, Calif.-based company into a new era with its Ryzen PC processors and Epyc server chips in 2017.\nUnder her supervision, AMD jumped ahead of Intel in making CPUs at smaller node sizes, giving its products an edge in speed and performance. AMD is making chips at 7-nanometer scale, while Intel has struggled to make chips at 10-nanometer scale. AMD is now developing chips at 5-nanometer scale. Circuit widths on chips are measured in nanometers, which are one-billionth of a meter.\nOn July 23,Intel announced a six-month delayin production of its already behind-schedule 7-nanometer processors. Intel now expects to ship its first 7-nanometer processors in late 2022 or early 2023. By that time, AMD could be making 3-nanometer processors, analysts said.\nThe situation has helped AMD take market share from Intel in PCs and servers. Those gains have buoyed AMD stock.\nChip foundry Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing(TSM) produces AMD's chips.\nSu also is overseeing a potentially transformative acquisition. On Oct. 27, AMD announced an all-stock deal worth $35 billion to buyXilinx(XLNX) to expand its growing data-center business. However, AMD stock fell on theXilinx acquisition news. Critics said the acquisition complicates AMD's \"clean\" investor story around market share gains in processors.\nIntel Losing Market Share To AMD\nIn the fourth quarter, Intel regained market share from AMD in CPUs for desktop and notebook PCs, according to Mercury Research. That ended a three-year streak of market share gains by AMD in the PC segment on a quarter-to-quarter basis. AMD also suffered supply constraints with its contract manufacturer in the period.\nAMD's unit share of desktop PC processor sales was 19.3% in the fourth quarter, down from 20.1% in the third quarter. However, it was up from 18.3% in the year-earlier period.\nAMD's unit share of notebook PC processor sales was 19% in the December quarter, down from 20.2% in the September quarter. But it was up from 16.2% in the year-earlier period.\nHowever, AMD continued to gain share in CPUs for servers during the fourth quarter. Its server CPU market share was 7.1% in the December quarter. That compares with 6.6% in the September quarter and 4.5% in the year-earlier quarter, Mercury said.\nAdvanced Micro Devices News: New PC, Gaming Chips\nOn Oct. 8, AMD introduced its next-generation Ryzen processors for desktop computers. It described itsRyzen 5000 series central processing unitsas the \"fastest gaming CPUs in the world.\" The Ryzen 5000 series products are aimed at PC gamers and content creators.\nOn Jan. 12, during a keynote speech at the virtual CES 2021 tech conference, Chief Executive Su introduced the company's newRyzen 5000 Series mobile processors. She called the chips \"the most powerful PC processors ever built for ultrathin and gaming notebooks.\" However, AMD stock fell 2% that day.\nThe next potential catalyst for AMD stock will be March 3. On that date, AMD plans to introduce the newest addition to its Radeon RX family of high-performance graphic cards.\nAMD Fundamental Analysis\nLate Jan. 26,AMD reported better-than-expected fourth-quarter results, thanks to strong demand for PC, gaming and data center products. But AMD stock fell 6.2% the next day.\nAMD earned an adjusted 52 cents a share on sales of $3.24 billion in the December quarter. Analysts expected AMD earnings of 47 cents a share on sales of $3.02 billion. On a year-over-year basis, AMD earnings rose 63% while sales climbed 53%.\nFor the current quarter, AMD expects to generate revenue of $3.2 billion, up 79% from the year-earlier period. Wall Street analysts predicted AMD sales of $2.73 billion in the first quarter.\nFor the full year, AMD expects sales to rise 37% to $13.38 billion. Analysts had been looking for 2021 revenue of $12.24 billion.\nAt least six Wall Street analysts raised their price targets on AMD stock after the company's earnings report.\nAMD Stock Technical Analysis\nAMD stock sank to a nearly four-decade low of 1.61 a share in July 2015 before starting its epic recovery.\nOn Nov. 30, AMD stock broke out of a fourth-stage,double-bottom basewith abuy pointof 88.82, according toIBD MarketSmithcharts. He suggests selling April S&P calls or puts on April VIX futures, noting the steep difference between March and April VIX futures.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":309,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":319421040,"gmtCreate":1611599176680,"gmtModify":1704861331101,"author":{"id":"3557383555428373","authorId":"3557383555428373","name":"Brendan","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/56a21e494574adc1ace116c74dddf22d","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Nah","listText":"Nah","text":"Nah","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/319421040","repostId":"1122718830","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1122718830","pubTimestamp":1611567441,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1122718830?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-01-25 17:37","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Believe it or not, bitcoin has become a good long-term investment","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1122718830","media":"CNN","summary":"Smart investing is about balancing risk and reward. Apple no longer provides unit-sales metrics that shed light on its average selling prices, but the company usually offers some qualitative comments about which devices are performing best.

Apple has also seen strong sales of Macs and iPads amid the pandemic, with more people working and studying from home, and that momentum is expected to have continued into the fiscal first quarter. The company launched new iPads late last year as well as its first computers to feature the company's own custom chip .

Analysts expect record performance for the company's services category as well, though one area may not hold up as well. Apple has done a good job of transitioning sales to its online store given the COVID-19 crisis, but it's \"overly reliant on in-store customer purchases\" to drive sales of its AppleCare insurance product, Huberty wrote.

Earnings: Analysts tracked by FactSet expect that Apple earned $1.41 a share in the December quarter, up from $1.25 a year earlier. On Estimize, which crowdsources estimates from hedge funds, academics and others, the average projection calls for $1.45 a share.

Revenue: The FactSet consensus models a record $102.54 billion in revenue for Apple's fiscal first quarter, up from $91.82 billion a year prior. The Estimize consensus is for $103.76 billion.

Analysts tracked by FactSet model $59.58 billion in iPhone revenue for Apple, up from $55.96 billion a year earlier. Apple declined to give formal guidance for the quarter on the last earnings call, but Chief Financial Officer Luca Maestri said at the time to expect growth in iPhone revenue even though devices would begin shipping later in the quarter than they did a year prior.

The FactSet consensus calls for $7.38 billion in Pad revenue, up from $5.98 billion; $8.63 billion in Mac revenue, up from $7.16 billion; $15.17 billion in services revenue, up from $12.72 billion; and $11.49 billion in revenue for the wearables, home, and accessories category, up from $10.01 billion.

Stock movement: Apple shares have gained following three of the past five earnings reports, and the shares are up 72% over the past year as the Dow Jones Industrial Average , which counts Apple as a component, has gained 7%.

Of the 41 analysts tracked by FactSet who cover Apple's stock, 28 have buy ratings, 10 have hold ratings and three have sell ratings, with an average price target of $132.71.

Apple has declined to give a quantitative financial forecast in each of its last three earnings reports because of uncertainty related to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the trend will likely continue this quarter.

\"Given lingering uncertainty, we expect Apple is more likely to provide 'guidelines' rather than 'guidance' for Q2,\" Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi wrote in a note to clients. In addition to the many unknowns around the pandemic, Apple's late launch timing of the latest batch of iPhones means that the March quarter could be stronger than usual, since there were fewer iPhone 12 \"selling days\" leading up to it.

Sacconaghi will also be watching for commentary on Apple's ongoing dispute with app developers led by Epic Games, which sued Apple and claimed that the company's App Store rules around in-app purchases are monopolistic. Apple lowered commission rates for smaller developers that make up the bulk of those on the App Store, even as these developers don't contribute too much to Apple's overall revenue from the platform.

More on Apple and Epic: 'Fortnite' dispute might open floodgates to serious scrutiny of Apple

\"We believe that Apple's decision to lower commissions was politically astute, allowing the company to portray itself as a promoter of small business, while also superficially addressing the complaint that its high app store fees are stifling competition and innovation,\" wrote Sacconaghi, who has a market perform rating and $120 price target on the stock. \"It remains to be seen if Apple will provide further commentary on this issue; that said, we continue to believe that the legal risk to App Store revenue is low.\"

Morgan Stanley's Huberty is interested in the company's China momentum. She suspects that the company is benefiting from weakness at Huawei, citing data that suggest customers are switching from Huawei to Apple devices at the highest rate in 15 months. (BB.T), AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc $(AMC)$, Nokia Corp. (NOKIA.HE) and GameStop Corp. $(GME)$.)
\n
Short squeezes and meme stocks
\n
Traders looking to group together on social media to make quick killings by pushing up share prices of companies at early stages or those going through difficult times have been setting up short squeezes.
\n
Professional investors have traditionally short-sold shares of companies they believe will perform worse than most other investors or analysts expect. Shorting means borrowing a company's shares and selling them immediately, in the hope of buying them back at a lower price, returning them to the lender and pocketing the difference. If you simply buy a stock hoping it will go up, all you risk is the money you invest. You might get wiped out. But if you short a stock, your risk potential is unlimited. You never know how high the price might rise if you have gotten the trade wrong.
\n
\"Covering\" a short position is when you buy back the shares to return them to the investor who lent them to you. You are hoping to cover at a lower price than you sold the shares for, to make a profit.
\n
To have a short position, you need to have a margin account with a broker -- an account that lets you borrow to invest or trade. Because of the risk in taking a short position, if the share price goes against you (higher), your broker will keep increasing its collateral requirements. If you run out of cash as the price keeps rising, you will be forced to cover at a loss. That type of action among a large group of short-sellers pushes the price higher in a spiral -- a short squeeze.
\n
Six more meme stocks
\n
The action changes daily. On June 9, for example, shares of Clover Health Investments Corp. $(CLOV)$ fell 24% after rising 86% the day before. The stock is 36.6% sold short, according to FactSet.
\n
Read:Newest meme stock darling Clover Health is popping. Is the SEC watching?
\n
Here are the six additional meme stocks, following our initial group of eight , sorted by market capitalization as of the close on June 9:
\n

\n
Palantir Technologies Inc. (PLTR) provides a software platform used by government defense and intelligence agencies. It is the largest company on the list by market cap, but not by revenue, as you can see below. A year-to-date chart of its price performance shows how wild the meme-stock action can be:
\n

\n
Palantir's stock was up 3% for 2021 through June 9, but its market cap had increased by 26% because the company had been raising cash by selling additional shares to investors. The company's following as a meme stock seems to spring more from its growth prospects than from short interest, which peaked at 8.5% of shares available for sale, according to FactSet.
\n
Wendy's Co. $(WEN)$ is another meme stock whose addition to the group may be a bit confusing, as the stock isn't heavily shorted and the company is stable. Thornton McEnery dug into the action on June 8, which may have included confusion over Wendy's ticker symbol , when the stock rose 26%.
\n
ContextLogic Inc. (WISH) is one of two stocks on the new list that have fallen this year. The mobile e-commerce company's stock opened below its initial public offering price before the IPO.
\n
Short interest
\n
Keeping the group in the same order, here are levels of short interest as percentages of available shares and in dollars:
\n

\n
FactSet's data on short positions as a percentage of shares outstanding is updated twice a month. The data was updated overnight between June 9 and 10. The second update takes place around the 25th day of the month.
\n
Clover is the most heavily shorted stock on the list. Brad Lamensdorf, CEO of ActiveAlts in Westport, Conn., who runs long and short investment strategies, said previously that a short percentage \"over 30% to 40% is outrageously high.\" (Lamensdorf co-manages the AdvisorShares Ranger Equity Bear ETF (HDGE), which is meant to be used as a hedging tool.)
\n
A high percentage of shares sold short makes a stock especially dangerous for the short-sellers, because it can increase the intensity of any short squeeze.
\n
We have shown the short interest as a percentage of market cap in order to provide context. Tesla Inc. $(TSLA)$ is an excellent example to provide more context, because the company has such a large market capitalization of $576.8 billion. Only 5.16% of the shares are sold short, but that comes to $29.8 billion in short interest -- the most (in dollars) for any stock in the S&P 500. Amazon.com Inc. $(AMZN)$ ranks second for dollars of short interest in the benchmark index, with 1.09% of shares sold short, which comes to $18.1 billion in short interest for a company with a market cap of $1.66 trillion.
\n
Canoo Inc. (GOEV) is the second-most heavily shorted stock listed above, at 29.5%.
