Does that have any meaning on whether or not that group or that sector can outperform in the future? Comparing the two, more than one-fourth of the top TAA companies are in the top decile of the QSI; two-thirds are in the top quarter, and all but two (92%) are in the top half.</p>\n<p>Notably, both the TAA top 10 and the QSI Top 25 outperformed the S&amp;P 500 by 30% and 50%, respectively, in recent five-year periods. I searched Twitter for both terms with the word “stocks” included, and here’s what I found:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4416d357ac2bc16d4fdcf60a3c4c3c56\" tg-width=\"916\" tg-height=\"463\"></p>\n<p>I have a proposition for you. In the name of flipping it, we should consider the following two terms as much more insightful and helpful to investors and traders:</p>\n<p>FOLO (fear of living once)&nbsp; and YOMO (you only miss out).</p>\n<p>Here’s a story I’ve told about how things can go wrong even when you’re think you’re trading well and outperforming the markets seems easy.</p>\n<p>Return to 2004</p>\n<p>It was late January 2004, and I was starting my second full year of running a hedge fund, and I was off to an incredible start to the year. I’d come into 2004 steadily scaling into ever-larger and more aggressive positions in mostly internet core equipment vendors like Nortel, JDSU, and Cisco, not to mention my largest position in Apple, which I’d first bought for the fund back in March of 2003. (I held Apple along with occasional Apple call options until I closed the fund, by the way.) I’d made big money already in my hedge fund, which was full of mostly long positions as the markets had been in a big rebound from their October 2002 lows.</p>\n<p>As 2004 started, the markets were in what I called a Steady Betty Rally Mode at the time, and internet-equipment stocks were the single hottest sector into the new year. I started trimming some of my biggest winners down, including the aforementioned Nortel, JDSU and Cisco, along with any stocks that were up 20%, 30% or even more as January wore on. By late January, I was nearly back up to half in cash and the hedge fund was already up nearly 25% for the year while the broader markets were barely up 5% on the year.</p>\n<p>In the last week of January, the markets turned south and the highest-flying winners of the year, like those that I’d just sold down and taken huge profits on, were the hardest hit. I’d previously learned the hard way over the years that you should never confuse a bull market with genius, but I’d even nailed the near-term top and my whole year was already in the pocket. I was feeling pretty good about myself and my trading prowess and listening to Willie cover Woody Guthrie’s classic, “Stay a little longer” chuckling about how I’d left before the party was busted!</p>\n<p>By early February, I was “only” up just over 20% on the year, as I still had half my fund in stocks and a few options, but the markets were now down year to date and the stocks I’d so smartly sold down at the top had themselves pulled back 20%-30% from their highs. They finally were stabilizing and the charts started to turn upward as the stocks were flattish to down on the year.</p>\n<p>Here I was sitting on a huge pile of cash and feeling like a genius for having sold at the top and here was a chance to just slowly start rebuilding and buying some new stocks while they were down. I started to buy back a few shares and to put just a little bit of that 50% cash, along with more cash coming in, to work in the markets.</p>\n<p>By the time March rolled around, I was back fully invested and mostly long, up single digits on the year, and the markets were down about 10% or so on the year. One morning as I walked into my hedge fund hotel office that I rented from Bear Stearns on the 40th floor in midtown New York, I was shocked to see the Nasdaq futures were down huge. I pulled up the Bloomberg terminal and my heart sank as the headline screamed “Nortel admits fraud; Major telecom equipment vendors under investigation” or something along those lines. Nortel was cut in half and most every internet-equipment-related stock in the market was down 20% or more on the day. I puked my guts out that whole day and cried myself to sleep that night.</p>\n<p>I spent the rest of the year digging out of that hole and getting back ahead of the market and had a lot of success in that hedge fund from that bottom.</p>\n<p>Lesson of the week — do not dig yourself a hole, OK?</p>\n<p>Foreshadowing</p>\n<p>Here’s something I wrote in 2007, the last time I started turning from bullish to bearish and eventually traded my hedge fund for a TV gig right before the markets started tanking in late 2007: “Concerned about complacency” (May 3, 2007).</p>\n<p>Here’s an excerpt:</p>\n<p><i>I’m worried. That’s no news flash, as I’m&nbsp;always&nbsp;worried, but I am really concerned about the complacency out there. Earnings are great, as evidenced by the booming season we’re experiencing. The global economy is lifting a lot of boats. And every time I try to get bearish, I feel almost silly when the action, fundamentals and environment are this strong.</i></p>\n<p><i>Just about everybody is long real estate. … Wasn’t almost every rationalization for why we shouldn’t fret about any real estate bubble true when real estate crashed the last few times?</i></p>\n<p><i>Last month, the IMF reported that “the global economy remains on track for robust growth in 2007 and 2008. … Moreover, downside risks to the outlook seem less threatening than at the time of the September 2006&nbsp;World Economic Outlook.” Has the IMF ever gotten the outlook right?</i></p>\n<p><i>This utter disregard for risk permeates the sell side, too, as evidenced by this broker note from Bear this morning: “Worries —&nbsp;the market is running out of major concerns.” Not surprisingly, I suppose, I’m going to&nbsp;flip&nbsp;that statement as I find I have more major concerns about the market and economy today than I’ve had at any point in the past five years.</i></p>\n<p><i>A&nbsp;Citi&nbsp;board member recently told me that I had a “lot of guts” for having launched a tech fund in October 2002. I think you’d have to have a lot of guts to launch a tech fund in May 2007! I’m focusing more on the short side than anything else right now.</i></p>\n<p>Beware when things are too easy</p>\n<p>Cody&nbsp;back in real time, 2021. I’m not saying the markets are about to tank like they did in 2008. But I am saying, once again, that I know way too many random hard-working people who are convinced that they can make big money in cryptos and meme stocks and by trading, trading, trading.</p>\n<p>And all my analysis points to an unfortunate risk/reward set up for the aggressive bulls here.</p>\n<p>That story above about Nortel: I’m here to tell you that you won’t always get a chance to sell when the charts stop working. You don’t always get a chance to lock in your gains while you think it’s easy.</p>\n<p>I’ve been in this business, picking stocks and helping people manage their money for 25 years, and it seems obvious to me that trading and investing and making profits and keeping those profits is very hard to do over many years. There are times it seems easy. That’s often the best time to get cautious. Because if it really were easy, nobody would work their real jobs. We could all just trade stocks to each other all day and make all the money we need. Yeah, right.</p>\n<p>I have a new name or two I’m digging hard into this week, one in AI and another that’s trying to revolutionize long-term gig employment trends. I searched Twitter for both terms with the word “stocks” included, and here’s what I found:\n\nI have a proposition for you. In the name of flipping it, we should consider the following two terms as much more insightful and helpful to investors and traders:\nFOLO (fear of living once)  and YOMO (you only miss out).\nHere’s a story I’ve told about how things can go wrong even when you’re think you’re trading well and outperforming the markets seems easy.\nReturn to 2004\nIt was late January 2004, and I was starting my second full year of running a hedge fund, and I was off to an incredible start to the year. I’d come into 2004 steadily scaling into ever-larger and more aggressive positions in mostly internet core equipment vendors like Nortel, JDSU, and Cisco, not to mention my largest position in Apple, which I’d first bought for the fund back in March of 2003. (I held Apple along with occasional Apple call options until I closed the fund, by the way.) I’d made big money already in my hedge fund, which was full of mostly long positions as the markets had been in a big rebound from their October 2002 lows.\nAs 2004 started, the markets were in what I called a Steady Betty Rally Mode at the time, and internet-equipment stocks were the single hottest sector into the new year. I started trimming some of my biggest winners down, including the aforementioned Nortel, JDSU and Cisco, along with any stocks that were up 20%, 30% or even more as January wore on. By late January, I was nearly back up to half in cash and the hedge fund was already up nearly 25% for the year while the broader markets were barely up 5% on the year.\nIn the last week of January, the markets turned south and the highest-flying winners of the year, like those that I’d just sold down and taken huge profits on, were the hardest hit. I’d previously learned the hard way over the years that you should never confuse a bull market with genius, but I’d even nailed the near-term top and my whole year was already in the pocket. I was feeling pretty good about myself and my trading prowess and listening to Willie cover Woody Guthrie’s classic, “Stay a little longer” chuckling about how I’d left before the party was busted!\nBy early February, I was “only” up just over 20% on the year, as I still had half my fund in stocks and a few options, but the markets were now down year to date and the stocks I’d so smartly sold down at the top had themselves pulled back 20%-30% from their highs. They finally were stabilizing and the charts started to turn upward as the stocks were flattish to down on the year.\nHere I was sitting on a huge pile of cash and feeling like a genius for having sold at the top and here was a chance to just slowly start rebuilding and buying some new stocks while they were down. I started to buy back a few shares and to put just a little bit of that 50% cash, along with more cash coming in, to work in the markets.\nBy the time March rolled around, I was back fully invested and mostly long, up single digits on the year, and the markets were down about 10% or so on the year. One morning as I walked into my hedge fund hotel office that I rented from Bear Stearns on the 40th floor in midtown New York, I was shocked to see the Nasdaq futures were down huge. I pulled up the Bloomberg terminal and my heart sank as the headline screamed “Nortel admits fraud; Major telecom equipment vendors under investigation” or something along those lines. Nortel was cut in half and most every internet-equipment-related stock in the market was down 20% or more on the day. I puked my guts out that whole day and cried myself to sleep that night.\nI spent the rest of the year digging out of that hole and getting back ahead of the market and had a lot of success in that hedge fund from that bottom.\nLesson of the week — do not dig yourself a hole, OK?\nForeshadowing\nHere’s something I wrote in 2007, the last time I started turning from bullish to bearish and eventually traded my hedge fund for a TV gig right before the markets started tanking in late 2007: “Concerned about complacency” (May 3, 2007).\nHere’s an excerpt:\nI’m worried. That’s no news flash, as I’m always worried, but I am really concerned about the complacency out there. Earnings are great, as evidenced by the booming season we’re experiencing. The global economy is lifting a lot of boats. And every time I try to get bearish, I feel almost silly when the action, fundamentals and environment are this strong.\nJust about everybody is long real estate. … Wasn’t almost every rationalization for why we shouldn’t fret about any real estate bubble true when real estate crashed the last few times?\nLast month, the IMF reported that “the global economy remains on track for robust growth in 2007 and 2008. … Moreover, downside risks to the outlook seem less threatening than at the time of the September 2006 World Economic Outlook.” Has the IMF ever gotten the outlook right?\nThis utter disregard for risk permeates the sell side, too, as evidenced by this broker note from Bear this morning: “Worries — the market is running out of major concerns.” Not surprisingly, I suppose, I’m going to flip that statement as I find I have more major concerns about the market and economy today than I’ve had at any point in the past five years.\nA Citi board member recently told me that I had a “lot of guts” for having launched a tech fund in October 2002. I think you’d have to have a lot of guts to launch a tech fund in May 2007! I’m focusing more on the short side than anything else right now.\nBeware when things are too easy\nCody back in real time, 2021. I’m not saying the markets are about to tank like they did in 2008. But I am saying, once again, that I know way too many random hard-working people who are convinced that they can make big money in cryptos and meme stocks and by trading, trading, trading.\nAnd all my analysis points to an unfortunate risk/reward set up for the aggressive bulls here.\nThat story above about Nortel: I’m here to tell you that you won’t always get a chance to sell when the charts stop working. Hollywood studios have only recently started to release new films to theaters. And they now release many of them to streaming services simultaneously, dramatically increasing AMC's competition. Moreover, many consumers have built home theaters that replicate the theater experience.</p>\n<p>Yes, many moviegoers will probably still go to theaters despite these factors. However, reduced demand will bring about consolidation, making it more likely AMC and its peers will close some theaters. Thus, it remains unclear when or even if AMC will return to pre-pandemic revenue levels.</p>\n<h2>2. GameStop: New management and sales growth won't be enough</h2>\n<p>Thanks to a social media-inspired battle with the short-sellers, GameStop stock has managed to increase by more than 1,000% since the beginning of the year. Now, this video-game-centric retailer has just turned the corner by attracting institutional investors and joining the <b>Russell 1000</b>.</p>\n<p>It also has branched out into new lines of business, such as toys and collectibles. Nonetheless, investors have primarily focused on the move into e-commerce to capitalize on game downloads. To that end, it hired e-commerce specialist Matt Furlong as its new CEO. Furlong ran <b>Amazon</b>'s Australia operations during a period of high growth.</p>\n<p>Unfortunately, these moves might do little more than stop its competitive moat from narrowing further. Now, GameStop is merely another seller in the toy and collectible businesses. Moreover, its game downloads typically sell for the same price on the manufacturer's website. Besides serving as a <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a>-stop-shop for game downloads, it offers little advantage other than the name recognition it built in past years.</p>\n<p>Nonetheless, the improvements helped revenue to grow 25% from year-ago levels to $1.3 billion in the first quarter of 2021. Moreover, falling operating expenses helped narrow the quarterly loss to $67 million versus $166 million in the year-ago quarter. Still, net sales fell 21% in fiscal 2020.</p>\n<p>Furthermore, at a P/S ratio of 2.6, it might appear inexpensive. However, with that ratio growing by more than 4,500% over the last year, any progress it could make in the near term might already be priced in.</p>\n<h2>3. Koss: Struggling to gain market share in a crowded market</h2>\n<p>Koss has also enjoyed some notoriety as a meme stock, reaching a high of $127.45 per share in early January on speculation driven by social media, before a massive pullback. This headphone and audio accessory manufacturer now trades in the $25-per-share range.</p>\n<p>After decades of struggling for survival, the company has won praise in recent years in the headset market. Many of its Bluetooth and wireless headsets earned ratings close to five stars on Amazon.</p>\n<p>Unfortunately, its products continue to operate at a competitive disadvantage. Koss must also compete with companies such as <b>Apple </b>and <b>Sony</b>. Aside from their massive size and name-recognition advantages, both operate ecosystems that could give their headsets an advantage. Moreover, a survey by CSIMarket found Koss' headsets held a market share of less than 1%.</p>\n<p>This disadvantage extends to financials. For the first nine months of the current fiscal year, sales fell 2% from the year-ago period. Koss managed to reverse the losses suffered during 2020 and posted a profit of almost $162,000 during that time.</p>\n<p>However, the forgiveness of a $507,000 Small Business Administration loan and a $379,000 gain from the settlement of a short sale drove the positive net income. Otherwise, Koss would have lost $724,000 during that period, more than the $624,000 loss from the first nine months of 2020.</p>\n<p>Moreover, it has reported about $982,000 in negative cash flows during the current fiscal year and holds just over $6 million in cash. In the name of flipping it, we should consider the following two terms as much more insightful and helpful to investors and traders:</p>\n<p>FOLO (fear of living once)&nbsp; and YOMO (you only miss out).</p>\n<p>Here’s a story I’ve told about how things can go wrong even when you’re think you’re trading well and outperforming the markets seems easy.</p>\n<p>Return to 2004</p>\n<p>It was late January 2004, and I was starting my second full year of running a hedge fund, and I was off to an incredible start to the year. I’d come into 2004 steadily scaling into ever-larger and more aggressive positions in mostly internet core equipment vendors like Nortel, JDSU, and Cisco, not to mention my largest position in Apple, which I’d first bought for the fund back in March of 2003. (I held Apple along with occasional Apple call options until I closed the fund, by the way.) I’d made big money already in my hedge fund, which was full of mostly long positions as the markets had been in a big rebound from their October 2002 lows.</p>\n<p>As 2004 started, the markets were in what I called a Steady Betty Rally Mode at the time, and internet-equipment stocks were the single hottest sector into the new year. I started trimming some of my biggest winners down, including the aforementioned Nortel, JDSU and Cisco, along with any stocks that were up 20%, 30% or even more as January wore on. By late January, I was nearly back up to half in cash and the hedge fund was already up nearly 25% for the year while the broader markets were barely up 5% on the year.</p>\n<p>In the last week of January, the markets turned south and the highest-flying winners of the year, like those that I’d just sold down and taken huge profits on, were the hardest hit. I’d previously learned the hard way over the years that you should never confuse a bull market with genius, but I’d even nailed the near-term top and my whole year was already in the pocket. I was feeling pretty good about myself and my trading prowess and listening to Willie cover Woody Guthrie’s classic, “Stay a little longer” chuckling about how I’d left before the party was busted!</p>\n<p>By early February, I was “only” up just over 20% on the year, as I still had half my fund in stocks and a few options, but the markets were now down year to date and the stocks I’d so smartly sold down at the top had themselves pulled back 20%-30% from their highs. They finally were stabilizing and the charts started to turn upward as the stocks were flattish to down on the year.</p>\n<p>Here I was sitting on a huge pile of cash and feeling like a genius for having sold at the top and here was a chance to just slowly start rebuilding and buying some new stocks while they were down. I started to buy back a few shares and to put just a little bit of that 50% cash, along with more cash coming in, to work in the markets.</p>\n<p>By the time March rolled around, I was back fully invested and mostly long, up single digits on the year, and the markets were down about 10% or so on the year. One morning as I walked into my hedge fund hotel office that I rented from Bear Stearns on the 40th floor in midtown New York, I was shocked to see the Nasdaq futures were down huge. I pulled up the Bloomberg terminal and my heart sank as the headline screamed “Nortel admits fraud; Major telecom equipment vendors under investigation” or something along those lines. Nortel was cut in half and most every internet-equipment-related stock in the market was down 20% or more on the day. I puked my guts out that whole day and cried myself to sleep that night.</p>\n<p>I spent the rest of the year digging out of that hole and getting back ahead of the market and had a lot of success in that hedge fund from that bottom.</p>\n<p>Lesson of the week — do not dig yourself a hole, OK?</p>\n<p>Foreshadowing</p>\n<p>Here’s something I wrote in 2007, the last time I started turning from bullish to bearish and eventually traded my hedge fund for a TV gig right before the markets started tanking in late 2007: “Concerned about complacency” (May 3, 2007).</p>\n<p>Here’s an excerpt:</p>\n<p><i>I’m worried. That’s no news flash, as I’m&nbsp;always&nbsp;worried, but I am really concerned about the complacency out there. Earnings are great, as evidenced by the booming season we’re experiencing. The global economy is lifting a lot of boats. And every time I try to get bearish, I feel almost silly when the action, fundamentals and environment are this strong.</i></p>\n<p><i>Just about everybody is long real estate. … Wasn’t almost every rationalization for why we shouldn’t fret about any real estate bubble true when real estate crashed the last few times?</i></p>\n<p><i>Last month, the IMF reported that “the global economy remains on track for robust growth in 2007 and 2008. … Moreover, downside risks to the outlook seem less threatening than at the time of the September 2006&nbsp;World Economic Outlook.” Has the IMF ever gotten the outlook right?</i></p>\n<p><i>This utter disregard for risk permeates the sell side, too, as evidenced by this broker note from Bear this morning: “Worries —&nbsp;the market is running out of major concerns.” Not surprisingly, I suppose, I’m going to&nbsp;flip&nbsp;that statement as I find I have more major concerns about the market and economy today than I’ve had at any point in the past five years.</i></p>\n<p><i>A&nbsp;Citi&nbsp;board member recently told me that I had a “lot of guts” for having launched a tech fund in October 2002. I think you’d have to have a lot of guts to launch a tech fund in May 2007! I’m focusing more on the short side than anything else right now.</i></p>\n<p>Beware when things are too easy</p>\n<p>Cody&nbsp;back in real time, 2021. I’m not saying the markets are about to tank like they did in 2008. But I am saying, once again, that I know way too many random hard-working people who are convinced that they can make big money in cryptos and meme stocks and by trading, trading, trading.</p>\n<p>And all my analysis points to an unfortunate risk/reward set up for the aggressive bulls here.</p>\n<p>That story above about Nortel: I’m here to tell you that you won’t always get a chance to sell when the charts stop working. You don’t always get a chance to lock in your gains while you think it’s easy.</p>\n<p>I’ve been in this business, picking stocks and helping people manage their money for 25 years, and it seems obvious to me that trading and investing and making profits and keeping those profits is very hard to do over many years. There are times it seems easy. That’s often the best time to get cautious. Because if it really were easy, nobody would work their real jobs. We could all just trade stocks to each other all day and make all the money we need. But when the dust clears and momentum traders move on, investors could find themselves stuck holding stock in struggling companies with weak competitive advantages.</p>\n<p>Let's find out a bit more about why these are three stocks I would avoid at all costs.</p>\n<h2>1. AMC: Can it return to pre-pandemic revenue levels?</h2>\n<p>Thanks mainly to traders looking to force short sellers to cover their bets, AMC has risen nearly 2,700% since the beginning of the year. This outsized interest in the stock has made it possible for the international theater chain to issue additional shares and raise sorely needed funds.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/image/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fg.foolcdn.com%2Feditorial%2Fimages%2F632064%2Fgettyimages-1162949169.jpg&amp;w=700&amp;op=resize\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"399\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<p>Since Jan. 1, the overall share count has risen from 224 million to 502 million. This raised its cash levels by more than $500 million to $813 million in the first three months of the year.</p>\n<p>Nonetheless, the business continues to suffer. Revenue fell 84% in the first quarter of 2021 from year-ago levels and declined 77% during fiscal 2020 compared with 2019.</p>\n<p>Theater reopenings could bring revenue improvements when AMC releases its second-quarter results. But will they show enough improvement to reflect the massive surge in the stock price? Thanks to the run-up, the price-to-sales (P/S) ratio now stands at 25, up from 0.2 at the beginning of the year. Until the recent surge in the stock price, the sales multiple had rarely climbed above 0.5 over the last three years.</p>\n<p>Unfortunately, investors seem to have fewer reasons than ever to buy this stock at a high valuation. Hollywood studios have only recently started to release new films to theaters. And they now release many of them to streaming services simultaneously, dramatically increasing AMC's competition. Moreover, many consumers have built home theaters that replicate the theater experience.</p>\n<p>Yes, many moviegoers will probably still go to theaters despite these factors. However, reduced demand will bring about consolidation, making it more likely AMC and its peers will close some theaters. Thus, it remains unclear when or even if AMC will return to pre-pandemic revenue levels.</p>\n<h2>2. GameStop: New management and sales growth won't be enough</h2>\n<p>Thanks to a social media-inspired battle with the short-sellers, GameStop stock has managed to increase by more than 1,000% since the beginning of the year. Now, this video-game-centric retailer has just turned the corner by attracting institutional investors and joining the <b>Russell 1000</b>.</p>\n<p>It also has branched out into new lines of business, such as toys and collectibles. Nonetheless, investors have primarily focused on the move into e-commerce to capitalize on game downloads. To that end, it hired e-commerce specialist Matt Furlong as its new CEO. Furlong ran <b>Amazon</b>'s Australia operations during a period of high growth.</p>\n<p>Unfortunately, these moves might do little more than stop its competitive moat from narrowing further. Now, GameStop is merely another seller in the toy and collectible businesses. Moreover, its game downloads typically sell for the same price on the manufacturer's website. Besides serving as a <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a>-stop-shop for game downloads, it offers little advantage other than the name recognition it built in past years.</p>\n<p>Nonetheless, the improvements helped revenue to grow 25% from year-ago levels to $1.3 billion in the first quarter of 2021. Moreover, falling operating expenses helped narrow the quarterly loss to $67 million versus $166 million in the year-ago quarter. Still, net sales fell 21% in fiscal 2020.</p>\n<p>Furthermore, at a P/S ratio of 2.6, it might appear inexpensive. However, with that ratio growing by more than 4,500% over the last year, any progress it could make in the near term might already be priced in.</p>\n<h2>3. Koss: Struggling to gain market share in a crowded market</h2>\n<p>Koss has also enjoyed some notoriety as a meme stock, reaching a high of $127.45 per share in early January on speculation driven by social media, before a massive pullback. This headphone and audio accessory manufacturer now trades in the $25-per-share range.</p>\n<p>After decades of struggling for survival, the company has won praise in recent years in the headset market. Many of its Bluetooth and wireless headsets earned ratings close to five stars on Amazon.</p>\n<p>Unfortunately, its products continue to operate at a competitive disadvantage. Koss must also compete with companies such as <b>Apple </b>and <b>Sony</b>. Aside from their massive size and name-recognition advantages, both operate ecosystems that could give their headsets an advantage. Moreover, a survey by CSIMarket found Koss' headsets held a market share of less than 1%.</p>\n<p>This disadvantage extends to financials. For the first nine months of the current fiscal year, sales fell 2% from the year-ago period. Koss managed to reverse the losses suffered during 2020 and posted a profit of almost $162,000 during that time.</p>\n<p>However, the forgiveness of a $507,000 Small Business Administration loan and a $379,000 gain from the settlement of a short sale drove the positive net income. Otherwise, Koss would have lost $724,000 during that period, more than the $624,000 loss from the first nine months of 2020.</p>\n<p>Moreover, it has reported about $982,000 in negative cash flows during the current fiscal year and holds just over $6 million in cash. Traders monitoring Reddit's WallStreetBets online forum and other investors driven by social media have enjoyed some success trying to force short squeezes. But when the dust clears and momentum traders move on, investors could find themselves stuck holding stock in struggling companies with weak competitive advantages.\nLet's find out a bit more about why these are three stocks I would avoid at all costs.\n1. AMC: Can it return to pre-pandemic revenue levels?\nThanks mainly to traders looking to force short sellers to cover their bets, AMC has risen nearly 2,700% since the beginning of the year. This outsized interest in the stock has made it possible for the international theater chain to issue additional shares and raise sorely needed funds.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nSince Jan. 1, the overall share count has risen from 224 million to 502 million. This raised its cash levels by more than $500 million to $813 million in the first three months of the year.\nNonetheless, the business continues to suffer. Revenue fell 84% in the first quarter of 2021 from year-ago levels and declined 77% during fiscal 2020 compared with 2019.\nTheater reopenings could bring revenue improvements when AMC releases its second-quarter results. But will they show enough improvement to reflect the massive surge in the stock price? Thanks to the run-up, the price-to-sales (P/S) ratio now stands at 25, up from 0.2 at the beginning of the year. Until the recent surge in the stock price, the sales multiple had rarely climbed above 0.5 over the last three years.\nUnfortunately, investors seem to have fewer reasons than ever to buy this stock at a high valuation. Hollywood studios have only recently started to release new films to theaters. And they now release many of them to streaming services simultaneously, dramatically increasing AMC's competition. Moreover, many consumers have built home theaters that replicate the theater experience.\nYes, many moviegoers will probably still go to theaters despite these factors. However, reduced demand will bring about consolidation, making it more likely AMC and its peers will close some theaters. Thus, it remains unclear when or even if AMC will return to pre-pandemic revenue levels.\n2. GameStop: New management and sales growth won't be enough\nThanks to a social media-inspired battle with the short-sellers, GameStop stock has managed to increase by more than 1,000% since the beginning of the year. Now, this video-game-centric retailer has just turned the corner by attracting institutional investors and joining the Russell 1000.\nIt also has branched out into new lines of business, such as toys and collectibles. Nonetheless, investors have primarily focused on the move into e-commerce to capitalize on game downloads. To that end, it hired e-commerce specialist Matt Furlong as its new CEO. Furlong ran Amazon's Australia operations during a period of high growth.\nUnfortunately, these moves might do little more than stop its competitive moat from narrowing further. Now, GameStop is merely another seller in the toy and collectible businesses. Moreover, its game downloads typically sell for the same price on the manufacturer's website. Besides serving as a one-stop-shop for game downloads, it offers little advantage other than the name recognition it built in past years.\nNonetheless, the improvements helped revenue to grow 25% from year-ago levels to $1.3 billion in the first quarter of 2021. Moreover, falling operating expenses helped narrow the quarterly loss to $67 million versus $166 million in the year-ago quarter. Still, net sales fell 21% in fiscal 2020.\nFurthermore, at a P/S ratio of 2.6, it might appear inexpensive. However, with that ratio growing by more than 4,500% over the last year, any progress it could make in the near term might already be priced in.\n3. Koss: Struggling to gain market share in a crowded market\nKoss has also enjoyed some notoriety as a meme stock, reaching a high of $127.45 per share in early January on speculation driven by social media, before a massive pullback. This headphone and audio accessory manufacturer now trades in the $25-per-share range.\nAfter decades of struggling for survival, the company has won praise in recent years in the headset market. Many of its Bluetooth and wireless headsets earned ratings close to five stars on Amazon.\nUnfortunately, its products continue to operate at a competitive disadvantage. Koss must also compete with companies such as Apple and Sony. Aside from their massive size and name-recognition advantages, both operate ecosystems that could give their headsets an advantage. Moreover, a survey by CSIMarket found Koss' headsets held a market share of less than 1%.\nThis disadvantage extends to financials. For the first nine months of the current fiscal year, sales fell 2% from the year-ago period. Koss managed to reverse the losses suffered during 2020 and posted a profit of almost $162,000 during that time.\nHowever, the forgiveness of a $507,000 Small Business Administration loan and a $379,000 gain from the settlement of a short sale drove the positive net income. Otherwise, Koss would have lost $724,000 during that period, more than the $624,000 loss from the first nine months of 2020.\nMoreover, it has reported about $982,000 in negative cash flows during the current fiscal year and holds just over $6 million in cash.
