The company pioneered the graphics processing unit (GPU) that rendered lifelike images in video games. What makes these chips so effective is parallel processing, which takes computationally complex jobs and breaks them up into smaller, more manageable chunks. Nvidia was able to adapt this technology to handle the rigors of AI, making it arguably the most successful company in the AI chip space.</p><p>However, as demand for AI has accelerated, numerous technology stalwarts have been working furiously behind the scenes to come up with viable alternatives to Nvidia&#39;s industry-leading processors. This week saw a number of announcements as rivals unveiled the fruit of these efforts.</p><p>Let&#39;s take a look at three.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/d762b272d4a258c586b9c759e560be66\" title=\"\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"393\"/></p><p>Image source: Getty Images.</p><h2 id=\"id_174338693\">1. Intel</h2><p><strong>Intel</strong> unveiled its latest AI chip, dubbed Gaudi 3, in a direct challenge to Nvidia&#39;s GPU dominance. The company claims that Gaudi can train AI models nearly twice as fast as Nvidia&#39;s H100 flagship data center processor and 50% faster for inference -- running AI models that have already been trained. The company also said Gaudi delivered all that performance with 40% better power efficiency than the H100 &#34;at a fraction of the cost,&#34; according to Intel.</p><p>It&#39;s important to note that Nvidia recently unveiled the successor to its H100, its Blackwell B200 AI GPU, which will begin shipping later this year. While Gaudi wasn&#39;t compared to the B200, the company said, &#34;We do expect it to be highly competitive&#34; against Nvidia&#39;s latest processor, calling Gaudi &#34;a strong offering.&#34;</p><p>Intel is likely not looking to outperform Nvidia&#39;s most recent AI chips but rather offer enterprises a cheaper alternative. It&#39;s also worth noting that there&#39;s been an ongoing shortage of Nvidia&#39;s H100 and H200 chips, creating a bottleneck in AI adoption. Intel&#39;s latest offering could help alleviate the backlog.</p><h2 id=\"id_2531580240\">2. Meta Platforms</h2><p><strong>Meta Platforms</strong> announced the Meta Training and Inference Accelerator (MTIA) v2, a custom AI chip that runs in the company&#39;s data centers. Meta announced that the latest version of its MTIA &#34;more than doubles the compute and memory bandwidth&#34; of its predecessor. Early results suggest the new processor performs three times better than the first version.</p><p>Meta noted that it&#39;s trying to provide &#34;the right balance of compute, memory bandwidth, and memory capacity&#34; with its latest chip. The company isn&#39;t using these chips for AI processing; at least, not yet. Meta is using the processors to improve the speed and efficiency of its ranking and recommendation systems, used to surface relevant content on its social media sites and target advertising.</p><p>Meta is one of Nvidia&#39;s biggest customers, so if it is successful in its AI chip efforts, the company could reduce its dependency on Nvidia&#39;s AI processors.</p><h2 id=\"id_2315318828\">3. Alphabet</h2><p>At the Google Cloud Next event, <strong>Alphabet</strong> announced the availability of Cloud Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) v5p, the latest version of its AI-centric processor. The company said its Cloud TPU can train large language models (LLMs) -- which underpin AI systems -- three times faster than version 4.</p><p>As is generally the case, Google&#39;s TPUs won&#39;t be sold but will be available on Google Cloud later this year.</p><p>However, in a blog post, Google noted that it&#39;s expanding its Nvidia GPU capabilities with the addition of the A3 Mega Supercomputer, which is powered by Nvidia H100 GPUs. Google Cloud customers will also have access to virtual machines (VM) featuring Nvidia&#39;s Blackwell B200 and Grace Blackwell GB200 GPUs.</p><p>Google also unveiled Axion, its first data center central processing unit (CPU), designed in conjunction with <strong>Arm Holdings</strong>. Google says Axion is 30% faster than the leading CPU, with 50% better performance and 62% greater efficiency than x86 chips from Intel and <strong>Advanced Micro Devices</strong> (NASDAQ: AMD).</p><h2 id=\"id_3852744177\">An important takeaway for Nvidia investors</h2><p>While Intel intends to compete directly with Nvidia for a piece of the AI chip market, Meta Platforms and Alphabet are developing their own AI chips for specific purposes, either in-house or for cloud customers. Furthermore, while Intel claims its AI-centric chips can compete head-to-head with Nvidia&#39;s flagship processors, Nvidia has already moved on and will soon be shipping the next version of its state-of-the-art AI processors.</p><p>This helps highlight Nvidia&#39;s enviable position in the industry -- its rivals are always playing catch-up. They claim to best Nvidia in terms of performance, but their bragging rights don&#39;t last, as Nvidia&#39;s next-generation chips are already on the way.</p><p>It&#39;s also important to point out that the market for generative AI is growing at a rapid clip, increasing the market for these cutting-edge processors. The company pioneered the graphics processing unit (GPU) that rendered lifelike images in video games. What makes these chips so effective is parallel processing, which takes computationally complex jobs and breaks them up into smaller, more manageable chunks. Nvidia was able to adapt this technology to handle the rigors of AI, making it arguably the most successful company in the AI chip space.However, as demand for AI has accelerated, numerous technology stalwarts have been working furiously behind the scenes to come up with viable alternatives to Nvidia's industry-leading processors. This week saw a number of announcements as rivals unveiled the fruit of these efforts.Let's take a look at three.Image source: Getty Images.1. IntelIntel unveiled its latest AI chip, dubbed Gaudi 3, in a direct challenge to Nvidia's GPU dominance. The company claims that Gaudi can train AI models nearly twice as fast as Nvidia's H100 flagship data center processor and 50% faster for inference -- running AI models that have already been trained. The company also said Gaudi delivered all that performance with 40% better power efficiency than the H100 \"at a fraction of the cost,\" according to Intel.It's important to note that Nvidia recently unveiled the successor to its H100, its Blackwell B200 AI GPU, which will begin shipping later this year. While Gaudi wasn't compared to the B200, the company said, \"We do expect it to be highly competitive\" against Nvidia's latest processor, calling Gaudi \"a strong offering.\"Intel is likely not looking to outperform Nvidia's most recent AI chips but rather offer enterprises a cheaper alternative. It's also worth noting that there's been an ongoing shortage of Nvidia's H100 and H200 chips, creating a bottleneck in AI adoption. Intel's latest offering could help alleviate the backlog.2. Meta PlatformsMeta Platforms announced the Meta Training and Inference Accelerator (MTIA) v2, a custom AI chip that runs in the company's data centers. Meta announced that the latest version of its MTIA \"more than doubles the compute and memory bandwidth\" of its predecessor. Early results suggest the new processor performs three times better than the first version.Meta noted that it's trying to provide \"the right balance of compute, memory bandwidth, and memory capacity\" with its latest chip. The company isn't using these chips for AI processing; at least, not yet. Meta is using the processors to improve the speed and efficiency of its ranking and recommendation systems, used to surface relevant content on its social media sites and target advertising.Meta is one of Nvidia's biggest customers, so if it is successful in its AI chip efforts, the company could reduce its dependency on Nvidia's AI processors.3. AlphabetAt the Google Cloud Next event, Alphabet announced the availability of Cloud Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) v5p, the latest version of its AI-centric processor. The company said its Cloud TPU can train large language models (LLMs) -- which underpin AI systems -- three times faster than version 4.As is generally the case, Google's TPUs won't be sold but will be available on Google Cloud later this year.However, in a blog post, Google noted that it's expanding its Nvidia GPU capabilities with the addition of the A3 Mega Supercomputer, which is powered by Nvidia H100 GPUs. Google Cloud customers will also have access to virtual machines (VM) featuring Nvidia's Blackwell B200 and Grace Blackwell GB200 GPUs.Google also unveiled Axion, its first data center central processing unit (CPU), designed in conjunction with Arm Holdings. Google says Axion is 30% faster than the leading CPU, with 50% better performance and 62% greater efficiency than x86 chips from Intel and Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD).An important takeaway for Nvidia investorsWhile Intel intends to compete directly with Nvidia for a piece of the AI chip market, Meta Platforms and Alphabet are developing their own AI chips for specific purposes, either in-house or for cloud customers. Furthermore, while Intel claims its AI-centric chips can compete head-to-head with Nvidia's flagship processors, Nvidia has already moved on and will soon be shipping the next version of its state-of-the-art AI processors.This helps highlight Nvidia's enviable position in the industry -- its rivals are always playing catch-up. They claim to best Nvidia in terms of performance, but their bragging rights don't last, as Nvidia's next-generation chips are already on the way.It's also important to point out that the market for generative AI is growing at a rapid clip, increasing the market for these cutting-edge processors. you can consider for your buy watchlist.</p><h2 id=\"id_1752658824\">Frasers Centrepoint Trust (SGX: J69U)</h2><p>Frasers Centrepoint Trust, or FCT, is a retail REIT with a portfolio of 10 retail malls and an office building in Singapore with assets under management (AUM) of around S$6.9 billion.</p><p>FCT has a strong sponsor in <strong>Frasers Property Limited</strong> (SGX: TQ5), a real estate developer and manager with total assets of approximately S$40.2 billion as of 30 September 2022.</p><p>For its fiscal 2023 first half (1H FY2023) ending 30 March 2023, the retail REIT reported a 6.5% year on year increase in revenue to S$187.6 million.</p><p>Net property income (NPI) rose 5.7% year on year to S$138 million while DPU remained flat year on year at S$0.0613.</p><p>The REIT reported an encouraging business update for its fiscal 2023 third quarter (3Q FY2023).</p><p>Retail portfolio committed occupancy improved by 1.6 percentage points to 98.7%.</p><p>Shopper traffic and tenant sales also increased by 16% and 5% year-on-year, respectively, for 3Q FY2023.</p><p>FCT also recently announced the divestment of Changi City Point for S$338 million, helping to lower its gearing level to 37.1%.</p><p>The lower gearing will offer the retail REIT more borrowing capacity for yield-accretive acquisitions.</p><h2 id=\"id_3705017492\">Parkway Life REIT (SGX: C2PU)</h2><p>Parkway Life REIT, or PLife REIT, is a healthcare REIT with a portfolio of 61 properties in Singapore, Malaysia, and Japan with an AUM of around S$2.2 billion as of 31 December 2022.</p><p>PLife REIT has a strong sponsor in <strong>IHH Healthcare Berhad</strong> (SGX: Q0F), an integrated healthcare provider with a presence in 10 countries.</p><p>For the first half of 2023 (1H 2023), the healthcare REIT saw gross revenue jump 23.6% year on year to S$74.4 million.</p><p>NPI climbed 25.1% year on year to S$70.1 million.</p><p>DPU inched up 3.3% year on year to S$0.0729.</p><p>There could be more good news to come.</p><p>The REIT has renewed its lease for its Singapore hospitals till the end of 2042, giving it rental income certainty.</p><p>Moreover, PLife REIT can enjoy organic rental growth with a clear rent structure in place for future escalations.</p><h2 id=\"id_1288255984\">Mapletree Logistics Trust (SGX: M44U)</h2><p>Mapletree Logistics Trust, or MLT, is an industrial REIT with a portfolio of 193 properties in eight countries.</p><p>MLT has an AUM of approximately S$13.5 billion as of 30 June 2023.</p><p>The logistics REIT’s sponsor is Mapletree Investments Pte Ltd, a wholly-owned unit of Temasek Holdings that owns and manages S$77.4 billion of real estate as of 31 March 2023.</p><p>MLT continues to post DPU growth despite the tough macroeconomic environment.</p><p>For its fiscal 2024 first quarter (1Q FY2024) earnings ending 30 June 2023, the REIT saw gross revenue and NPI dip by 2.9% and 3.1%, respectively, to S$182.2 million and S$158.1 million.</p><p>DPU, however, edged up 0.1% year on year to S$0.02271.</p><p>MLT enjoyed a high portfolio occupancy of 97.1% and saw a positive rental reversion of 4.2% for its latest quarter.</p><p>The REIT had also just completed the acquisition of eight properties in Japan, South Korea, and Australia that should bump up its DPU.</p><p>In addition, MLT also has long-term projects that should add value to the portfolio over time, such as the amalgamation of land parcels in Malaysia that will be completed by 2027 and the redevelopment of 51 Benoi Road in Singapore slated for completion by 2025.</p><h2 id=\"id_985512761\">CapitaLand Integrated Commercial Trust (SGX: C38U)</h2><p>CapitaLand Integrated Commercial Trust, or CICT, is a retail and commercial REIT with a total of 26 properties in Singapore (21), Germany (2), and Australia (3).</p><p>Its AUM stood at S$24.2 billion as of 31 December 2022.</p><p>CICT’s sponsor is <strong>CapitaLand Investment Limited</strong> (SGX: 9CI), a real estate investment manager with S$133 billion of property AUM and S$89 billion of real estate funds under management as of 31 March 2023.</p><p>The REIT reported an impressive set of earnings for 1H 2023.</p><p>Revenue and NPI both increased year on year with DPU rising from S$0.0522 to S$0.053.</p><p>CICT’s portfolio committed occupancy stood high at 96.7% as of 30 June 2023.</p><p>Both its retail and office portfolio also enjoyed positive rental reversions of 6.9% and 9.6%, respectively, for 1H It delivered a worse negative return only six times over the past 50 years.</p><p>Several members of the blue chip index experienced especially sharp sell-offs. But that doesn&#39;t mean that better days aren&#39;t on the way. Here are three Dow stocks down 30% to 55% that are screaming buys for 2023.</p><h2>1. Apple</h2><p><b>Apple</b> held up better than most tech stocks throughout much of 2022. However, gravity kicked in during the latter part of the year. Apple&#39;s shares are now down around 30% below the peak level from late 2021.</p><p>The biggest problems for Apple relate to macroeconomic issues. High inflation, rising interest rates, and supply chain constraints (all aftereffects of the COVID-19 pandemic) are key factors behind the company&#39;s slowing growth rate.</p><p>But it would be a huge mistake to write off Apple&#39;s prospects. Wall Street certainly hasn&#39;t. The consensus 12-month price target for the stock is nearly 40% higher than the current share price.</p><p>Analysts no doubt like Apple&#39;s valuation after its steep decline. They almost certainly love the stickiness of the company&#39;s iPhone ecosystem. What really makes Apple stock a screaming buy, though, are the growth opportunities that the company could have in new areas, including augmented reality and digital advertising. The latter appears to be on track to become a $10 billion business for Apple even sooner than expected.</p><h2>2. Microsoft</h2><p><b>Microsoft</b> stock is currently 33% below the high set in late 2021. The tech giant started off last year with its shares declining. The downward trajectory continued throughout most of 2022.</p><p>This dismal performance last year stemmed in large part from a slump in worldwide PC shipments. Microsoft generates a significant portion of its total revenue from selling Windows operating systems and other PC software.</p><p>However, many analysts think that Microsoft could make a major comeback in the new year. The consensus Wall Street price target for the stock reflects an upside potential in the ballpark of 30%.</p><p>This bullish view appears to be justified. Microsoft&#39;s cloud hosting business continues to gain momentum. Sales for its cloud-based productivity software are growing. The company is making an important move into the advertising technology market. It shouldn&#39;t take much good news for Microsoft stock to return to its winning ways in 2023.</p><h2>3. Disney</h2><p>It wouldn&#39;t be surprising if Mickey Mouse isn&#39;t as cheerful as he&#39;s been in the past. Shares of <b>Walt</b> <b>Disney</b> plunged in 2022, marking the second consecutive year of declines. The stock is now down 55% below its previous high.</p><p>Disney&#39;s troubles are due in part to the overall economy. Investors also lost enthusiasm for the company&#39;s streaming business as it continues to rack up big losses.</p><p>There&#39;s some disagreement on Wall Street about how Disney will perform in 2023. Half of the analysts surveyed by Refinitiv in January recommend buying Disney, with most of the others recommending holding the stock. However, the average price target still reflects an upside potential of nearly 40%.</p><p>Disney&#39;s new ad-supported model for Disney+ could jump-start its biggest growth engine in 2023 and beyond. The company also has several likely blockbuster movies on the way this year, including <i>Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3</i> and a live-action version of <i>The Little Mermaid</i>. I&#39;ve visited Thailand and Philippines over the years and you will see green Grab delivery riders everywhere.</p><p>The company is so dominant that Uber (UBER) sold its operations to Grab and bought a stake in the company as a blatant surrender move.</p><p>In this article, I&#39;ll give you a general breakdown of Grab and share several reasons why I&#39;m bullish on the company long term.</p><h2>Grab Overview</h2><p>Grab was founded in 2016 by Singapore Billionaire Anthony Tan who had a vision of building a super-app for Southeast Asia.</p><p>Southeast Asia is made up of 8 countries and has a total population of 683 million people.</p><p>It&#39;s one of the fastest growing economies in the world thanks to massive technological advances and foreign investment.</p><p>Grab operates in 4 key segments: Delivery, Mobility, Financial Services, and Enterprise Services (Advertising for businesses).</p><p>The American ride sharing &amp; food delivery industry has many competitors such as Uber, Lyft (LYFT), DoorDash (DASH), and several other small companies who compete aggressively for the huge $ tide sharing market.</p><p>On the other hand, Grab only has 1 competitor in Southeast Asia called Foodpanda, a smaller company based out of Europe.</p><h2>Record Q2 Revenue and GMV</h2><p>The company hit record Q2 revenue of $321 million (Up 79% YoY) along with record Q2 GMV of $5.1 billion (Up 30% YoY).</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/aca6a4b7afe32d866b123c7ad3bc5973\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"356\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Grab Q2 2022 Financials (grab.com)</span></p><p>Monthly Transacting Users (MTAs) reached 32.6 million (Up 12% YoY) with 62% of users using 2 or more services on the app.</p><p>Net losses were $572 million, which was a 27% improvement from Q2 2021.</p><p>Grab continues to grow its MTA and establish a massive footprint in Southeast Asia. I don&#39;t see any competitors taking market share from the company right now and Grab will be able to raise prices to adjust for inflation to keep both merchants and consumers on a level playing field.</p><h2>Deliveries</h2><p>Delivery revenue grew 199% YoY and makes up nearly 50% of the company&#39;s revenue and Grab just announced a new partnership with Coca-Cola (KO) in August 2022 to offer more of its products on the app.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0f9aa62bcd9e18dd9dc1501b4a322358\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"260\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Grab Q2 2022 Deliveries (grab.com)</span></p><p>Grocery &amp; food delivery is a stable and lucrative business that the company can continue profiting from. The Grab app makes it easy to order from any restaurant or grocery store within a 20 km radius, which gives app users a wide range of selections.</p><p>Grab can onload more restaurants and increase its revenue as more users flock to its app.</p><h2>Mobility</h2><p>Mobility bounced back nicely in Q2 2022 and Grab saw a nice revenue boost of 37% in its ride sharing segment due to higher tourist activity and international travel.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9f8cc1e637a6d3ae80030c2a86c9757a\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"267\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Grab Q2 2022 Mobility (grab.com)</span></p><p>Grab does compete with motorcycle taxis that offer citywide transportation throughout Southeast Asia at a lower cost. It will be interesting to see if Grab adds motorcycle rides to its platform in the future.</p><p>Southeast Asian countries are beginning to welcome back tourists and drop mask mandates, which is extremely bullish for its ridesharing segment.</p><h2>Financial Services</h2><p>Financial services saw a 94% in revenue YoY as more users use the company&#39;s digital payment app and applied for loans through Grab.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5d2de6dd60e53c092bfecac927222563\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"312\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Grab Q2 2022 Financial Services (grab.com)</span></p><p>Grab is becoming a solid alternative to PayPal (PYPL) in Southeast Asia and could benefit from an increase in TPV over the next few years.</p><h2>Enterprise Services</h2><p>Grab&#39;s Enterprise services saw a 30% revenue boost YoY as more companies spent money on GrabAds to drive higher customer sales volume.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a25d5c353a8942bd7a96e0e7100db743\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"229\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Grab Q2 2022 Enterprise Services (grab.com)</span></p><p>Grab isn&#39;t generating a lot of revenue from merchant ads but could scale this segment as MTA is approaching 50+ million.</p><p>The company also launched Grab Maps in August 2022 to help alleviate many of its problems using standard Google Maps.</p><p>Management expects to break even on the food &amp; deliveries segment much earlier than expected.</p><h2>My Bullish Take</h2><p>GRAB stock trades around $3 and is down 61% from its initial SPAC IPO.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f2b4098c6633fecb6afcda2efcdbcb04\" tg-width=\"1280\" tg-height=\"802\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>GRAB data by YCharts</span></p><p>The company made history by becoming the most expensive SPAC IPO of all-time with an initial valuation of $40 billion.</p><p>What&#39;s most intriguing is that Altimeter Capital selected Grab as its SPAC partner.</p><p>I trust their judgement and believe Grab is one of the best stocks under $5 to own right now.</p><p>Digital technological advances in Southeast Asia will drive higher per capita incomes and more e-commerce activity in the future.</p><p>Grab CEO Anthony Tan believes the company will be profitable soon and could start generating positive EBITDA as soon as 2023.</p><p>Not only is Grab a ride sharing &amp; delivery app but the app offers other services including digital payments, bill pay, and smartphone credit purchase.</p><p>Whenever you visit Southeast Asia, you must download the Grab app to get around the city. Grab doesn&#39;t have a large footprint in rural areas of Southeast Asia but that&#39;s okay because most tourists and higher income residents live in the major cities such as Singapore, Manila, Bangkok, etc.</p><h2>Risk Factors</h2><p>Grab is a fast growing company but there are several risk factors that I worry about. If the Southeast Asian economy slows down then Grab will suffer from a reduction in e-commerce activity.</p><p>There are also the risks of Uber or early Grab investors dumping their stakes once the SPAC lockup period ends.</p><p>Grab has 4 billion shares outstanding and I wonder if future share dilution will become an ongoing problem. It&#39;s the worst tool anyone can think of for the job, except for all the other tools that anyone has yet thought of. Let&#39;s take the Nasdaq-100 index, in its QQQ ETF format. If you could construct any coherent narrative as to why the ETF fell to the level it did in the COVID crisis, ran up to the level it did in 2021, and then corrected to the level it has in 2022, we&#39;re all ears. We don&#39;t mean &#34;why did it sell off hard into COVID&#34; or &#34;why did it turn weak come 2022?&#34; We mean, why did it find support and resistance at those specific levels?</p><p>If you use fairly standard Elliott Wave and Fibonacci measures, the QQQ confirms almost perfectly to textbook levels since the 2018 lows. And because the pattern fits so well, in the larger and smaller degree, one has to ask oneself... are the Doom-Mongers of Fin Twit really correct that it&#39;s all going to zero?</p><p>Let&#39;s first of all take a look at the move from the Q4 2018 lows to the Q4 2021 highs. </p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4c9120d3593db409e5b620370d28decd\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"297\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>QQQ Chart (TrendSpider, Cestrian Analysis)</span></p><p>The first thing to note is the start point. Right at the end of Q4 2018 the Fed had tried to normalize monetary policy by raising rates and planning to shrink, not grow, the size of its balance sheet. This caused a market tantrum such that most all of 2018&#39;s gains in the S&amp;P or the Nasdaq were wiped out. The bottom came in right at the end of the year. We can call that Point Zero.</p><p>QQQ then rose in a Wave 1 up, peaking at around $237 in February 2020, a fairly quick gain of 65% in the prior fourteen months or so. The chat at the time was that this was nuts and couldn&#39;t last.</p><p>Yikes, Freak Out!!</p><p>Now a very interesting thing happens. COVID hits and naturally enough the world freaks out as do investors. Rather surprisingly however, it turns out one can model a &#34;yikes freak out&#34; reaction in the market. &#34;Yikes freak out&#34; usually means a Wave 2 down, a fast and deep drop. And very often a Wave 2 down finds support at the 61.8% or 78.6% retracement of the prior Wave 1 up. The Covid lows in the QQQ were<i>precisely</i>a 78.6% drop from the Wave 1 highs back towards Point Zero. Likely not a coincidence.</p><p><b>Now The Long Road To Happiness</b></p><p>After a &#34;Yikes Freak Out&#34; Wave 2 comes a Wave 3 which are typically powerful upward moves. Which is what happens to the Qs coming out of COVID. You know all the reasons <i>why</i> it is said this happens - Fed helicopter money, crypto bros, work from home tech refresh cycle, all that - but put that aside for a moment because, really, who cares <i>why</i> it happened. Let&#39;s <i>measure</i> what happened. The chart above shows this. Wave 3s typically terminate at a minimum of the 100% extension of the prior Wave 1, and more commonly the 161.8% extension. More bullish levels are the 261.8%, 361.8%, and so on. (By the way, if Fibonacci extensions are new to you, fear not. Whilst the theory behind<i>why</i>Fibonacci numbers matter is complicated, the math involved in calculating how they apply to stock prices is not. The 161.8% extension of Wave 1 is calculated thus: take the stock price movement in Wave 1, multiply it by 1.618, and add that to the stock price at the Wave 2 low, hey presto, that&#39;s the 161.8% extension of Wave 1). Anyway. You can see that at the most recent all-time high, QQQ hit the 261.8% (=2.618) extension of Wave 1 almost to the dollar. Again, probably not a coincidence.</p><p><b>Then Comes Boiling The Frog</b></p><p>2022 comes and here we go with a Wave 4 down. Psychologically, emotionally, and potentially financially, Wave 4s are tough. Most people have become accustomed to the occasional shock and awe flash crash Wave 2. The panic is over as soon as it began. Also due to the mass psychology involved, which usually translates as<i>someone has to do something</i>, very often, someone does in fact do something - COVID stimulus being a prime example. But in a slow-boil Wave 4, the panic never really rises. Instead it&#39;s a stages-of-grief thing where if you&#39;re not careful you end up accepting and moving on. Which means you toss your account overboard and start a new day. Except you don&#39;t, because that&#39;s usually when the market rebounds and then you are too stunned to do anything about it, fearful that you will just buy into the next leg down. Actually the first half of 2022 saw Big Money do a fine job of work in this regard. If you look at how one measure of volatility, the Vix index, has moved vs. the panics of 2020 and indeed the Fed-tightening fear in 2018, it has barely moved at all - just traded sideways in a channel.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ae14b1ca4f0561e9aa095aa32de983e2\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"350\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Vix Chart (TradingView, Cestrian &#34;Analysis&#34;)</span></p><p>There are many reasons for this but chief amongst them has been the institutional use of out-of-the-money index puts that have been rolled out and down through the first half, slow and steady, no freaking out, just dragging down the indices and their proxy ETFs as market makers have had to sell those indices in order to hedge their positions (having sold puts to institutions, market makers are then long the market, so have to sell underlying securities in order to get back to neutral).</p><p>And this wave 4 right here is what has caused the it&#39;s-all-over mentality to take hold, in our view.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/52a7ab589c32698e50b1eb8755902c70\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"302\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>QQQ Chart (TrendSpider, Cestrian Analysis)</span></p><p>It&#39;s been a deeper-than-expected correction for sure. With a 78.6% retraced Wave 2 you might normally expect a 38.2% retraced Wave 4 - that&#39;s based on nothing other than pattern recognition. The 38.2% retracement of Wave 3 was $315, which is where the QQQ set up camp for a while in February this year, before head-faking to the upside then digging for victory once more. Thus far the Wave 4 looks to have bottomed in June, between the 50% and 61.8% retracements of Wave 3.</p><p><b>Wait, Isn&#39;t This A Bullish Article?</b></p><p>So, the title of this article is, &#34;Dare To Dream&#34;. Looks more like a nightmare for 2022. Or does it? Let&#39;s zoom in to see what has happened since those June lows.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/941554bdc300eb4dad173f18f77aeafc\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"299\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>QQQ Chart (TrendSpider, Cestrian Analysis)</span></p><p>The waves &amp; Fibonacci approach works in smaller and larger degrees. One cannot say that it&#39;s truly fractal in nature, as is often claimed, since there&#39;s no perfectly-repeating pattern in smaller and smaller degrees, but we can say that because the extensions and retracements are merely emotional and/or algorithmic reactions to the most recent price movements, they are self-referential in nature and that is why they scale up and down - because a larger degree move is relative to an earlier larger degree move, and a smaller degree move is relative to an earlier smaller degree move.</p><p>Look at the 5-waves up from the June lows. The Fib levels work nicely - a 78.6% retrace Wave ii, a 223.6% Wave iii extension of Wave i, and we&#39;ll see what happens with September options expiry (that&#39;s today at the time of writing) does to the Wave iv. But so far there is every chance we then get a smaller degree Wave v up (once September opex is done, a wall of puts will expire and market-maker short hedges will need to be covered, which can drive a move upwards).</p><p>And if that Wave v happens, and for it to be a Wave v it must peak above the Wave iii high - then that&#39;s ongoing confirmation that the June lows were the lows. We aren&#39;t there yet. We need to see that Wave v exceed QQQ $335ish. But if we do? Well, if that Wave v does arrive, the bear argument - that we&#39;re in a downwards channel that started last November and has featured only countertrend rallies since then - starts to look a lot weaker. Not necessarily wrong, anything can change, but weaker.</p><p>Then the outlook can be like ... this. A final flourish in the larger degree to complete a 5-wave cycle up off of those 2018 lows.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/915355750cdd99c2cfca3f27e8bcdada\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"300\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>QQQ Chart (TrendSpider, Cestrian Analysis)</span></p><p>Now, we don&#39;t think this is a Wen Moon situation. We can make a technical argument that QQQ will peak in a Wave 5 in the 500s, 550s even, and maybe it will. But for the record and until facts disturb our opinion, we think that QQQ will make a new high in 2023, maybe early 2024. And then put in a Yikes Wave 2 in the even-larger-degree. Because those 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 waves up you see from 2018 to (maybe) 2023-4? They combine to form probably a Wave 1 up. Which means a Yikes Wave 2 next. Or, maybe they combine to form a Wave 3 up. In which case it&#39;s a Doom N Gloom Forever Wave 4 next. Either way, down. In our<i>Growth Investor Pro</i>service we lean bullish right now but much of our work positioning for possible upside ahead is done - we have our stocks and ETFs set up with stop ideas and accumulation price zones and price targets and all that. More of our time right now is being spent on ... how do we make big from the move down that comes after the next high. And for that? Stay tuned.</p><p>Oh and by the way. Want to play QQQ to the long side? Consider this approach.</p><p>1 - Wait to see if QQQ moves up above $288, which is the 0.786 retrace of the smaller-degree Wave iv above.</p><p>2 - If no, wait. (This is like one of those early multi-user dungeon games. &#34;Time passes ....&#34;)</p><p>3 - If yes, consider buying with a stop-loss a little below that $288 level ... $270-274 makes sense as it&#39;s below the Wave ii low so if it gets there, something has gone wrong.</p><p>4 - Consider accumulating a position in the range of $290-$300, slowly over time, buying on red days not green days.</p><p>5 - Consider holding to see if we can make it to $335 - the potential Wave v high. That&#39;s &gt;10% free money if so. If you look at how one measure of volatility, the Vix index, has moved vs. the panics of 2020 and indeed the Fed-tightening fear in 2018, it has barely moved at all - just traded sideways in a channel.Vix Chart (TradingView, Cestrian \"Analysis\")There are many reasons for this but chief amongst them has been the institutional use of out-of-the-money index puts that have been rolled out and down through the first half, slow and steady, no freaking out, just dragging down the indices and their proxy ETFs as market makers have had to sell those indices in order to hedge their positions (having sold puts to institutions, market makers are then long the market, so have to sell underlying securities in order to get back to neutral).And this wave 4 right here is what has caused the it's-all-over mentality to take hold, in our view.QQQ Chart (TrendSpider, Cestrian Analysis)It's been a deeper-than-expected correction for sure. With a 78.6% retraced Wave 2 you might normally expect a 38.2% retraced Wave 4 - that's based on nothing other than pattern recognition. The 38.2% retracement of Wave 3 was $315, which is where the QQQ set up camp for a while in February this year, before head-faking to the upside then digging for victory once more. Thus far the Wave 4 looks to have bottomed in June, between the 50% and 61.8% retracements of Wave 3.Wait, Isn't This A Bullish Article?So, the title of this article is, \"Dare To Dream\". Looks more like a nightmare for 2022. Or does it? Let's zoom in to see what has happened since those June lows.QQQ Chart (TrendSpider, Cestrian Analysis)The waves & Fibonacci approach works in smaller and larger degrees. One cannot say that it's truly fractal in nature, as is often claimed, since there's no perfectly-repeating pattern in smaller and smaller degrees, but we can say that because the extensions and retracements are merely emotional and/or algorithmic reactions to the most recent price movements, they are self-referential in nature and that is why they scale up and down - because a larger degree move is relative to an earlier larger degree move, and a smaller degree move is relative to an earlier smaller degree move.Look at the 5-waves up from the June lows. The Fib levels work nicely - a 78.6% retrace Wave ii, a 223.6% Wave iii extension of Wave i, and we'll see what happens with September options expiry (that's today at the time of writing) does to the Wave iv. But so far there is every chance we then get a smaller degree Wave v up (once September opex is done, a wall of puts will expire and market-maker short hedges will need to be covered, which can drive a move upwards).And if that Wave v happens, and for it to be a Wave v it must peak above the Wave iii high - then that's ongoing confirmation that the June lows were the lows. We aren't there yet. We need to see that Wave v exceed QQQ $335ish. But if we do? Well, if that Wave v does arrive, the bear argument - that we're in a downwards channel that started last November and has featured only countertrend rallies since then - starts to look a lot weaker. Not necessarily wrong, anything can change, but weaker.Then the outlook can be like ... this. A final flourish in the larger degree to complete a 5-wave cycle up off of those 2018 lows.QQQ Chart (TrendSpider, Cestrian Analysis)Now, we don't think this is a Wen Moon situation. We can make a technical argument that QQQ will peak in a Wave 5 in the 500s, 550s even, and maybe it will. But for the record and until facts disturb our opinion, we think that QQQ will make a new high in 2023, maybe early 2024. And then put in a Yikes Wave 2 in the even-larger-degree. Because those 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 waves up you see from 2018 to (maybe) 2023-4? They combine to form probably a Wave 1 up. Which means a Yikes Wave 2 next. Or, maybe they combine to form a Wave 3 up. In which case it's a Doom N Gloom Forever Wave 4 next. Either way, down. In ourGrowth Investor Proservice we lean bullish right now but much of our work positioning for possible upside ahead is done - we have our stocks and ETFs set up with stop ideas and accumulation price zones and price targets and all that. Consider this approach.1 - Wait to see if QQQ moves up above $288, which is the 0.786 retrace of the smaller-degree Wave iv above.2 - If no, wait. (This is like one of those early multi-user dungeon games. \"Time passes ....\")3 - If yes, consider buying with a stop-loss a little below that $288 level ... $270-274 makes sense as it's below the Wave ii low so if it gets there, something has gone wrong.4 - Consider accumulating a position in the range of $290-$300, slowly over time, buying on red days not green days.5 - Consider holding to see if we can make it to $335 - the potential Wave v high. That's >10% free money if so.
