Remember when Block (NYSE:SQ) was known as Squ","content":"

Sometimes, it’s fun to think about the good old days. Remember when Block (NYSE:SQ) was known as Square, not too long ago? SQ stock holders could simply view the company as an app-based credit-card reader business.

Then, things got complicated. CEO Jack Dorsey decided to “pull a Zuckerberg” and suddenly change Square’s name to Block. That’s when the trouble started, it seems.

Whether the long-time investors liked it or not, Dorsey re-branded the company and changed its focus. It’s probably not a coincidence that soon afterward, SQ stock started to collapse.

Some folks might try to pull off a rescue mission and buy Block shares while they’re down. However, this isn’t the time to be a hero. Over the coming months, Dorsey’s abrupt shift could lead to the continued downfall of a once-promising payments processor.

SQ Stock at a Glance

In 2021, the bulls had a dream of breaking SQ through the resistance level of $275. That dream is now much less realistic, and the sellers on Wall Street have completely taken over.

Don’t try to blame the weakness in Nasdaq tech stocks for Block’s problems. Heck, Block isn’t even listed on Nasdaq (though some folks might assume that it is).

There’s no denying it: in what might be called a “Wall Street referendum,” the investors have effectively cast their votes by dumping their Block shares.

After getting rejected at $275 for the third time in November 2021, SQ stock commenced on a relentless downturn that would persist into 2022. Now, the share price is below the $100 per share mark at $98.

From both the technical and psychological levels, falling through $100 is devastating. After this, the next stage could be capitulation. Do you really want to be in the trade with this occurring?

Dorsey’s Obsession

It’s disheartening to witness Dorsey lose sight of the simple but effective business model that once made Square/Block a great company.

Lately, it appears that Dorsey may be obsessing over cryptocurrency too much, and particularly Bitcoin (BTC-USD). It’s gotten to the point where the Cash App — which is what made the company successful in the first place — is scarcely the focus anymore.

This isn’t to suggest that Dorsey’s unhinged, but the extent of his new focus is worrisome. Late last year, he started tweeting ominous statements like, “Hyperinflation is going to change everything. It’s happening,” and, “It will happen in the US soon, and so the world.”

These types of declarations are more appropriate for a conspiracy theorist than a CEO of a major company. Does Dorsey realize that hyperinflation means inflation-rate growth of 50% per month?

A Roadblock to Profit Potential

Another relevant question is: did Dorsey consider the impact on the shareholders of having Block delve so deeply into cryptocurrency?

After the re-branding, SQ stockholders now have to worry about the price of Bitcoin crashing. Square’s share price was relatively stable, but Block shares have been volatile and it’s evident that Bitcoin’s gyrations are a contributing factor.

InvestorPlace contributor Dana Blankenhorn summed the problem up concisely, saying, “Dorsey’s fortune, which was almost $15 billion as recently as October, has plunged to $6.6 billion as of Jan. 26… In recent months, his image has morphed from that of a visionary tech executive to cranky cryptocurrency advocate.”

In other words, Dorsey is self-destructing while also losing credibility among the financial community.

And by the way, under Dorsey’s “leadership,” Square/Block has morphed from a moneymaker to an unprofitable business.

As evidence of this, note that during the three months ended Sept. 30, 2020, Square/Block reported net income of $36,515,000. Fast-forward to the same period of 2022, and the company incurred a net loss of $2,876,000.

The Takeaway

Change can be a good thing, but not in every case. That’s when the trouble started, it seems.Whether the long-time investors liked it or not, Dorsey re-branded the company and changed its focus. It’s probably not a coincidence that soon afterward, SQ stock started to collapse. Some folks might try to pull off a rescue mission and buy Block shares while they’re down. However, this isn’t the time to be a hero. Over the coming months, Dorsey’s abrupt shift could lead to the continued downfall of a once-promising payments processor.SQ Stock at a GlanceIn 2021, the bulls had a dream of breaking SQ through the resistance level of $275. That dream is now much less realistic, and the sellers on Wall Street have completely taken over.Don’t try to blame the weakness in Nasdaq tech stocks for Block’s problems. Now, the share price is below the $100 per share mark at $98.From both the technical and psychological levels, falling through $100 is devastating. After this, the next stage could be capitulation. Do you really want to be in the trade with this occurring?Dorsey’s ObsessionIt’s disheartening to witness Dorsey lose sight of the simple but effective business model that once made Square/Block a great company.Lately, it appears that Dorsey may be obsessing over cryptocurrency too much, and particularly Bitcoin (BTC-USD). It’s happening,” and, “It will happen in the US soon, and so the world.”These types of declarations are more appropriate for a conspiracy theorist than a CEO of a major company. Does Dorsey realize that hyperinflation means inflation-rate growth of 50% per month?A Roadblock to Profit PotentialAnother relevant question is: did Dorsey consider the impact on the shareholders of having Block delve so deeply into cryptocurrency? After the re-branding, SQ stockholders now have to worry about the price of Bitcoin crashing. Square’s share price was relatively stable, but Block shares have been volatile and it’s evident that Bitcoin’s gyrations are a contributing factor.InvestorPlace contributor Dana Blankenhorn summed the problem up concisely, saying, “Dorsey’s fortune, which was almost $15 billion as recently as October, has plunged to $6.6 billion as of Jan. 26… In recent months, his image has morphed from that of a visionary tech executive to cranky cryptocurrency advocate.”In other words, Dorsey is self-destructing while also losing credibility among the financial community. And by the way, under Dorsey’s “leadership,” Square/Block has morphed from a moneymaker to an unprofitable business. As evidence of this, note that during the three months ended Sept. 30, 2020, Square/Block reported net income of $36,515,000. Fast-forward to the same period of 2022, and the company incurred a net loss of $2,876,000.The TakeawayChange can be a good thing, but not in every case. Sometimes, it’s best to leave a perfectly viable business model as it is, or only make moderate adjustments to it.What Dorsey is doing is radically changing Square/Block’s focus to something that he, personally, seems obsessed with. If you’re a shareholder, then chances are excellent that you were never consulted about this sudden change.Dorsey has lost big-time on this bet, and Block doesn’t appear to be a winner on Wall Street. With that in mind, staying in the trade with SQ stock just doesn’t appear to be a gamble worth taking.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":522,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9097684696,"gmtCreate":1645443921165,"gmtModify":1676534028058,"author":{"id":"3559386573560117","authorId":"3559386573560117","name":"geo10","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3559386573560117","authorIdStr":"3559386573560117"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Nice","listText":"Nice","text":"Nice","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":7,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9097684696","repostId":"1151081032","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1151081032","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1645443248,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1151081032?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-02-21 19:34","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Disney World Raises Prices for Multi-Day Tickets and Park Hopper","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1151081032","media":"Seeking Alpha","summary":"In the first major price increase since before the pandemic, Walt Disney World(NYSE:DIS)is officiall","content":"

In the first major price increase since before the pandemic, Walt Disney World(NYSE:DIS)is officially raising its prices formulti-day and Park Hopper tickets (which allow visitors to move between the theme parks in the same day). The other supports the view of lower rates, on the basis that economies are too fragile to handle much tightening and inflation should subsequently trail off.

That leaves those positioned for higher U.S. policy rates exposed to potential losses if the market narrative suddenly flips.

“The consensus views in this market scare me,” Gang Hu, a TIPS trader with New York hedge fund WinShore Capital Partners, wrote in a note released after Friday’s jobs report. “Reading through various research papers from the Street, I couldn’t find anyone disagree with each other. But if we all agree and put on the same positions, who’s going to take us out” of the trade?

Friday’s robust nonfarm payroll report was met with rising Treasury yields, as the 10-year rate broke through 1.9%, stocks found their footing, and investors braced for a Fed that seems certain to move away from an easy-money stance, which has kept the fed funds pinned to current levels between 0% and 0.25%. Yet it was only a few months ago that some of the most sophisticated investors — hedge funds — were caught off guard by unexpected dovish pivots by the Fed and Bank of England, as well as a flattening of bond market yield curves.

The unexpected nature of the pandemic has produced enough uncertainties to leave lingering doubts about the outlook, Hu told MarketWatch by phone — starting with the possibilities that a fresh wave of COVID-19 cases could re-emerge at any time and that growth might taper off, bringing inflation down with it. His views were backed by a Treasury yield curve, or spread between short-term yields and their longer term counterparts, that narrowed further on Friday, despite the surprisingly strong jobs report.

“We are all following central banks and taking whatever they tell us at face value,” he says. “But I expect they could probably tell us something different at another time.”

Exacerbating the risk ahead are the consolidations in the fund management industry, with fewer people controlling more money, getting all the same information, and making the same bets — with one financial firm crossing the $10 trillion threshold, according to Hu. With so few controlling so much, “who has the size to be their counterparty and take them out of the trade?” he wrote.

The lack of adequately sized counterparties on the other side of a trade means unwinding that position becomes more costly. “You can execute, but if you are forced to sell, getting out can be a painful adjustment,” said head trader John Farawell with Roosevelt & Cross, a bond underwriter in New York.

Farawell pointed to Friday’s jobs report, which “shocked everybody,” as an example of how easily the herd can turn out to be wrong. “Now the question is if the Fed is going to do a 25 or 50 basis point hike, and when I see everyone looking the same way, a pain trade may occur. With many positioned for a flattening of the curve, it now could be a steepening that’s the next pain trade.”

The difficulty with being on the wrong side of a popular bet was highlighted late last year, when hedge funds incurred significant losses from wrong-way positions on the direction of interest rates in the U.S. and across the world. Their need to short-cover, or buy back securities to close out open short positions, was said to be one of the factors contributing to a decline in Treasury yields during early November.

An absence of market players may be occurring in other markets, such as crude oil, resulting in bigger swings in prices. The crude-oil market has lost some players during the pandemic, particularly companies that once acted as “circuit breakers,” said Tom Kloza, global head of energy analysis for the Oil Price Information Service. So several exploration and production firms have said they won’t hedge in futures, and “fewer participants translate into more volatility,” Kloza said.

Investors now turn their attention to next Thursday’s consumer-price index report, which traders and economists expect to come at around a 7.2% year-over-year headline gain. The other supports the view of lower rates, on the basis that economies are too fragile to handle much tightening and inflation should subsequently trail off. That leaves those positioned for higher U.S. policy rates exposed to potential losses if the market narrative suddenly flips.“The consensus views in this market scare me,” Gang Hu, a TIPS trader with New York hedge fund WinShore Capital Partners, wrote in a note released after Friday’s jobs report. “Reading through various research papers from the Street, I couldn’t find anyone disagree with each other. But if we all agree and put on the same positions, who’s going to take us out” of the trade?Friday’s robust nonfarm payroll report was met with rising Treasury yields, as the 10-year rate broke through 1.9%, stocks found their footing, and investors braced for a Fed that seems certain to move away from an easy-money stance, which has kept the fed funds pinned to current levels between 0% and 0.25%. His views were backed by a Treasury yield curve, or spread between short-term yields and their longer term counterparts, that narrowed further on Friday, despite the surprisingly strong jobs report.“We are all following central banks and taking whatever they tell us at face value,” he says. “But I expect they could probably tell us something different at another time.”Exacerbating the risk ahead are the consolidations in the fund management industry, with fewer people controlling more money, getting all the same information, and making the same bets — with one financial firm crossing the $10 trillion threshold, according to Hu. With so few controlling so much, “who has the size to be their counterparty and take them out of the trade?” he wrote. The lack of adequately sized counterparties on the other side of a trade means unwinding that position becomes more costly. “You can execute, but if you are forced to sell, getting out can be a painful adjustment,” said head trader John Farawell with Roosevelt & Cross, a bond underwriter in New York.Farawell pointed to Friday’s jobs report, which “shocked everybody,” as an example of how easily the herd can turn out to be wrong. “Now the question is if the Fed is going to do a 25 or 50 basis point hike, and when I see everyone looking the same way, a pain trade may occur. With many positioned for a flattening of the curve, it now could be a steepening that’s the next pain trade.”The difficulty with being on the wrong side of a popular bet was highlighted late last year, when hedge funds incurred significant losses from wrong-way positions on the direction of interest rates in the U.S. and across the world. So several exploration and production firms have said they won’t hedge in futures, and “fewer participants translate into more volatility,” Kloza said.Investors now turn their attention to next Thursday’s consumer-price index report, which traders and economists expect to come at around a 7.2% year-over-year headline gain. Traders also expect the February reading to hit 7.4% and March to hit 7.2% before annual CPI starts to taper off down to 3.3% at the end of the year.“There has definitely been binary ways to look at inflation as it affects the market, but there hasn’t been a dispersion of views as much as I would like,” said Rob Daly, director of fixed income at Glenmede Investment Management in Philadelphia.“The next pain trade could come if inflation moderates more quickly than expected, and rates come off quickly, with the 10-year yield falling back down to 1.50% —hurting those that have been positioned for aggressive rate hikes,” he said via phone. “Or it could come from inflation staying durable and the unwinding of risk.”","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":313,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9091106592,"gmtCreate":1643793050693,"gmtModify":1676533856925,"author":{"id":"3559386573560117","authorId":"3559386573560117","name":"geo10","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3559386573560117","authorIdStr":"3559386573560117"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Excellent ","listText":"Excellent ","text":"Excellent","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9091106592","repostId":"2208357964","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2208357964","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1643789403,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2208357964?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-02-02 16:10","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Alphabet Stock Split Aimed at Bringing Google Shares to Masses","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2208357964","media":"Bloomberg","summary":"(Bloomberg) -- Alphabet Inc. is bringing big stock splits back to the market, so prospective buyers ","content":"

(Bloomberg) -- Alphabet Inc. is bringing big stock splits back to the market, so prospective buyers won’t need upwards of $3,000 to own a share. Could this event be a stock mover?Adate has been official","content":"

Apple will unveil new products on March 8. Could this event be a stock mover?

Adate has been officially set. On Tuesday, March 8, Applewill holdits "Peak Performance" event. During it, the company is widely expected to unveil at least two new devices: the iPhone SE Generation 3 and the iPad Air Generation 5.

The Apple Maven will cover the event in real time, via live blog, starting at 9:50 a.m. Cupertino time (Pacific). For now, we discuss whether the new product introductions could have a meaningful impact on Apple stock.

Figure 1: Apple Stock: Will The New iPhone and iPad Make A Splash?

What Apple could unveil

It is nearly a certainty that the iPhone SE will be the star of the show. The second generation model, whose price starts at a very modest $399 in the US, is still not 5G-equipped and has not been updated in nearly two years.

The most recent iPad Air was unveiled in September 2020. It is currently the oldest device in Apple’s tablet lineup, since the regular iPad, iPad mini and iPad Pro have all been refreshed within the past 12 months. Expect an A15 bionic chip, better camera and 5G to be the key new features.

It is possible that a new Mac device will be introduced as well. Apple has been slowly upgrading all its desktops and laptops with a version of its home-made M1 chips. Left to be equipped with them is the iMac 27-inch and Mac Pro.

Very unlikely to be discussed are brand-new product categories. Apple’s mixed reality device is expected to be launched within the next 12 months, maybe this year already. Could CEO Tim Cook and his team have a nice surprise up their sleeves?

Do the new products matter?

On the day that Apple announced the upcoming event, Apple stock climbed 2%. The spike was barely any more pronounced than the S&P 500’s climb. It seems clear that simply confirming the event was not enough to turn investors significantly more bullish towards AAPL.

The question then becomes: could Apple stock rally just before or shortly after the product launch event? This is likely going to depend on what, exactly, the company plans on announcing.

AsI explained a couple of weeks ago, the new iPhone SE could help to boost sales among the more price-sensitive consumers, particularly in emerging markets. Could this event be a stock mover?Adate has been officially set. On Tuesday, March 8, Applewill holdits \"Peak Performance\" event. During it, the company is widely expected to unveil at least two new devices: the iPhone SE Generation 3 and the iPad Air Generation 5.The Apple Maven will cover the event in real time, via live blog, starting at 9:50 a.m. Cupertino time (Pacific). For now, we discuss whether the new product introductions could have a meaningful impact on Apple stock.Figure 1: Apple Stock: Will The New iPhone and iPad Make A Splash? What Apple could unveilIt is nearly a certainty that the iPhone SE will be the star of the show. Left to be equipped with them is the iMac 27-inch and Mac Pro.Very unlikely to be discussed are brand-new product categories. Apple’s mixed reality device is expected to be launched within the next 12 months, maybe this year already. Could CEO Tim Cook and his team have a nice surprise up their sleeves?Do the new products matter? On the day that Apple announced the upcoming event, Apple stock climbed 2%. The spike was barely any more pronounced than the S&P 500’s climb. It seems clear that simply confirming the event was not enough to turn investors significantly more bullish towards AAPL.The question then becomes: could Apple stock rally just before or shortly after the product launch event? This is likely going to depend on what, exactly, the company plans on announcing.AsI explained a couple of weeks ago, the new iPhone SE could help to boost sales among the more price-sensitive consumers, particularly in emerging markets. But because most investors probably already expect the new model to come out next week, it is unlikely that the device will do much to the stock price in the short term. What could really move the needle is the introduction of Apple’s AR and VR goggles. I suspect that Wall Street analysts have yet to fully quantify Apple’s metaverse opportunity, and a new product here could get the ball rolling. But again, mixed reality is unlikely to be a topic of conversation this early in 2022.In the end, I believe that the decision to own Apple stock should be based on the company’s business fundamentals and longer-term prospects, not on what happens to the product portfolio in the next few days.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":778,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9096654012,"gmtCreate":1644379706595,"gmtModify":1676533919499,"author":{"id":"3559386573560117","authorId":"3559386573560117","name":"geo10","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3559386573560117","authorIdStr":"3559386573560117"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Another bump ","listText":"Another bump ","text":"Another bump","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9096654012","repostId":"1180256189","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1180256189","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1644378318,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1180256189?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-02-09 11:45","market":"us","language":"en","title":"U.S. Solar Firm Seeks Tariff Action Against Key Asian Nations","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1180256189","media":"Bloomberg","summary":"Auxin Solar challenging imports from nations including VietnamNew action could lead to slower solar ","content":"

Auxin Solar challenging imports from nations including Vietnam

New action could lead to slower solar adoption in U.S.

Auxin Solar Inc. is asking the U.S. Commerce Department to investigate possible efforts to circumvent tariffs with the imports of equipment from Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia.

The company alleges the solar imports use parts or components from China, and that producers are assembling equipment in the Southeast Asian nations as a way of skirting duties, according to a filing made to the department in Washington, D.C. trading","content":"

Feb 18 (Reuters) - The Federal Reserve on Friday adopted an extensive set of restrictions on trading by policymakers and senior Fed staff after an ethics scandal that embroiled policymakers and threatened to shake confidence in the central bank's integrity.

The Fed said the rules are meant "to ensure public confidence in the impartiality and integrity of the Committee’s work."

Under the new rules, some of which were first unveiled last October, top Fed officials are banned from purchasing stocks and sector funds, and from holding individual bonds, agency-backed securities, cryptocurrencies, commodities or foreign currencies.

The use of derivatives, short sales and purchasing securities on margin are also banned, and officials will have to give 45 days advance notice and obtain approval for any transaction. All investments must be held for at least a year, the rules say.

Most of the Fed's new trading restrictions will come into effect on May 1 with pre-clearance and advance notice rules in force from July 1. Current Fed officials will have 12 months to come into compliance, the central bank said; new staff and policymakers will have six months from the date they join.

The Fed put in place the rules after Boston Fed chief Eric Rosengren and Dallas Fed president Robert Kaplan resigned following reports of their active trading in 2020, when the central bank launched a massive effort to fight the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Fed's efforts helped bolster financial markets.

Another policymaker, then Fed Vice Chair Richard Clarida, also came under fire after he corrected a previous financial disclosure in late December to show he sold a stock fund and then swiftly rebought it shortly before the Fed announced a barrage of rescue programs to stem the economic fallout from the pandemic.

However, questions remain about how much back and forth may have occurred over policymakers’ personal trading in a year when markets first cratered, then rebounded on the basis of both massive federal fiscal stimulus and an aggressive rescue effort by the Fed.

Last week, the Fed, responding to a Freedom of Information Act request by Reuters, said there are about 60 pages of correspondence between its ethics officials and policymakers regarding financial transactions conducted during 2020 but "denied in full" to release the documents, citing exemptions under the information act that it said applied in this case.

Despite the overhaul of limits on trading, at least one lawmaker has called for a Securities and Exchange Commission investigation into Fed officials' trading activity to determine if any trades in the past violated insider trading rules.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html;
