WeWork has shed 17% and was on track for its fourth consecutive weekly decline.</p><p>&#34;Trading turnover from the retail cohort tends to rise as the market experiences larger price swings,&#34; Lucas Mantle, analyst at Vanda Research, said.</p><p>The share moves were similar to those of meme stocks Bed Bath and Beyond and Hertz Global , where retail traders talked up companies on online forums such as Reddit.</p><p>Some of the latest speculative bets on the penny stocks were pinned on hopes of a merger and acquisition or a turnaround for the struggling businesses.</p><p>&#34;The risks are huge although you can argue that the rewards may be so as well,&#34; AJ Bell investment director Russ Mould said.</p><p>&#34;Any firm that is priced for bankruptcy but then avoids such a fate could see a big percentage uplift in valuation, not least owing to the low starting point.&#34;</p><p>Another set of retail traders are looking to capitalize on the volatility, especially by squeezing bearish investors on highly shorted stocks.</p><p>&#34;The allure is simple, massive potential profits in a very short period of time. Since taking over as CEO of conglomerate <b>Berkshire Hathaway</b> (NYSE:BRK.A)(NYSE:BRK.B) in 1965, he's created over $500 billion in value for his company's shareholders and overseen an annual average return of 20% for Berkshire's stock. Taking into account the year-to-date gains for Berkshire's Class A shares (BRK.A), the Oracle of Omaha has delivered aggregate share price gains of almost 3,400,000%.</p>\n<p>Despite these enormous returns, diversification has never been high on Buffett's list. In fact, Buffett once said, \"Diversification is protection against ignorance. It makes very little sense for those who know what they're doing.\" By the look of Berkshire Hathaway's portfolio, Buffett and his team know what they're doing.</p>\n<p>As of Sept. 16, Berkshire's $316.4 billion portfolio was concentrated in just three sectors, which made up approximately 85% of invested assets.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1077c8372814d2b8150e933b4c608005\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett. Image source: The Motley Fool.</p>\n<h3>Information technology: 43.31% of invested assets</h3>\n<p>A good chunk of Warren Buffett's portfolio -- about $137 billion -- is invested in tech stocks. But this figure is a bit misleading, as Berkshire Hathaway only owns two information technology companies: <b>Apple</b> (NASDAQ:AAPL) and <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/SNOW\">Snowflake</a></b> (NYSE:SNOW). Apple makes up $135 billion of this $137 billion position.</p>\n<p>Buffett has regularly referred to Apple as Berkshire Hathaway's \"third business.\" It's <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> of the most-recognized brands in the world, sports exceptional customer loyalty, and it's a regular leader in the innovation column.</p>\n<p>Within the U.S., Apple's iPhone is the clear market share leader. The introduction of 5G-capable devices should lead to a multi-year product replacement that lifts sales and cash flow for its products segment.</p>\n<p>However, Apple is also in the midst of a transformation that'll see it become a platform-based company. Leaning on services and subscriptions should reduce long-term revenue lumpiness associated with product cycle replacements and further expand the company's operating margin.</p>\n<p>I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that Buffett absolutely loves Apple's robust capital return program. Berkshire is netting nearly $800 million in annual income via dividends from Apple, and regular share repurchases are providing a positive lift on Apple's earnings per share.</p>\n<p>Meanwhile, cloud data-warehousing company Snowflake represents the first of what could be many tech stocks chosen by Buffett's investing lieutenants, Todd Combs and Ted Weschler. Since Buffett doesn't follow tech stocks all too closely, Combs and Weschler will be tasked with ensuring that Berkshire's portfolio offers some cutting-edge tech representation. With Snowflake, Berkshire is getting exposure to a leading infrastructure company whose products are layered atop the most-popular cloud services, such as S3 and Azure.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7343c3ce7330b86321a8ec9384d4baea\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Image source: Getty Images.</p>\n<h3>Financials: 29.97% of invested assets</h3>\n<p>Although it's no longer the largest sector in Buffett's portfolio, financials will always be the Oracle of Omaha's favorite place to put his company's capital to work. In total, Berkshire Hathaway owns a dozen financial stocks worth almost $94.3 billion, as of Sept. 16. This works out to 30% of Berkshire's invested assets.</p>\n<p>The reason the Oracle of Omaha loves financial stocks has to do with the cyclicality of the sector. Buffett isn't oblivious to the fact that recessions and economic contractions are a normal part of the economic cycle. But he's also keenly aware that recessions only last for a few months or, at most, a couple of quarters. By comparison, periods of economic expansion last years, if not a decade. These long periods of growth allow banks to take advantage of loan and deposit growth.</p>\n<p>Likewise, long periods of economic growth often lead to rising interest rates. As rates and yields rise, banks tend to reap the rewards via added net interest income. <b>Bank of America</b> (NYSE:BAC), the second-largest holding in Buffett's portfolio, is the most interest sensitive of the big bank stocks. Following its second-quarter operating results, Bank of America noted it would net $8 billion in extra net interest income in 12 months with a 100-basis-point parallel shift in the interest rate yield curve. Since this added income derives from outstanding loans, it would pretty much all go straight to BofA's bottom line.</p>\n<p>Another reason Buffett is a big fan of financials is their robust capital return programs. Take <b>U.S. Bancorp</b> (NYSE:USB) as a perfect example. U.S. Bancorp's focus on the bread-and-butter of banking (loan and deposit growth), coupled with its digitization efforts that have pushed a large number of retail sales online, have led to consistent cash flow and a market-topping yield of 3.2%.</p>\n<p>As long as Buffett exerts some level of control of Berkshire Hathaway's portfolio, you can count on financial stocks playing a key role.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/299023e9f7694c143fc3162fbb154afa\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"467\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Image source: Coca-Cola.</p>\n<h3>Consumer staples: 11.58% of invested assets</h3>\n<p>The third-largest sector represented in Buffett's portfolio is consumer staples. The five consumer staples stocks that Berkshire Hathaway owns accounted for $36.6 billion in value as of Sept. 16, or a little less than 11.6% of invested assets. For added context, an 11.6% share of invested assets for consumer staples is a more than two-decade low for this sector in Berkshire Hathaway's portfolio.</p>\n<p>The reason Buffett and his team have long been drawn to consumer staples is the predictability of cash flow from brand-name businesses. By definition, a consumer staple stock sells goods or services that are purchased in pretty much any economic environment. For instance, no matter how well or poorly the U.S. or global economy are performing, people need to buy food, toilet paper, detergent, toothpaste, and a number of other basic need goods and services. Companies that cater to these basic need items often produce predictable cash flow and a market-topping dividend.</p>\n<p>A majority of Berkshire's invested assets in consumer staples lie with <b>Coca-Cola</b> (NYSE:KO) and <b>Kraft Heinz</b> (NASDAQ:KHC).</p>\n<p>Coca-Cola is Berkshire Hathaway's longest-held stock, dating back 33 years. It's arguably the best-known consumer goods company on the planet, and is selling its products in all but two countries worldwide (North Korea and Cuba). Coke also controls a 20% share of the cold beverage market in developed countries and a 10% share in faster-growing emerging markets. It may be a relatively slow-growing company these days, but it's netting Buffett a nearly 52% annual yield, based on Berkshire's initial cost basis.</p>\n<p>As for Kraft Heinz, it's been one of Buffett's biggest disappointments. The Oracle of Omaha has admitted that Heinz overpaid for Kraft Foods, with the combined company taking a monstrous $15 billion write-down in 2019. Since taking over as CEO of conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK.A)(NYSE:BRK.B) in 1965, he's created over $500 billion in value for his company's shareholders and overseen an annual average return of 20% for Berkshire's stock. Taking into account the year-to-date gains for Berkshire's Class A shares (BRK.A), the Oracle of Omaha has delivered aggregate share price gains of almost 3,400,000%.\nDespite these enormous returns, diversification has never been high on Buffett's list. In fact, Buffett once said, \"Diversification is protection against ignorance. Image source: The Motley Fool.\nInformation technology: 43.31% of invested assets\nA good chunk of Warren Buffett's portfolio -- about $137 billion -- is invested in tech stocks. But this figure is a bit misleading, as Berkshire Hathaway only owns two information technology companies: Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Snowflake (NYSE:SNOW). Apple makes up $135 billion of this $137 billion position.\nBuffett has regularly referred to Apple as Berkshire Hathaway's \"third business.\" It's one of the most-recognized brands in the world, sports exceptional customer loyalty, and it's a regular leader in the innovation column.\nWithin the U.S., Apple's iPhone is the clear market share leader. The introduction of 5G-capable devices should lead to a multi-year product replacement that lifts sales and cash flow for its products segment.\nHowever, Apple is also in the midst of a transformation that'll see it become a platform-based company. Leaning on services and subscriptions should reduce long-term revenue lumpiness associated with product cycle replacements and further expand the company's operating margin.\nI'd be remiss if I didn't mention that Buffett absolutely loves Apple's robust capital return program. Berkshire is netting nearly $800 million in annual income via dividends from Apple, and regular share repurchases are providing a positive lift on Apple's earnings per share.\nMeanwhile, cloud data-warehousing company Snowflake represents the first of what could be many tech stocks chosen by Buffett's investing lieutenants, Todd Combs and Ted Weschler. Since Buffett doesn't follow tech stocks all too closely, Combs and Weschler will be tasked with ensuring that Berkshire's portfolio offers some cutting-edge tech representation. With Snowflake, Berkshire is getting exposure to a leading infrastructure company whose products are layered atop the most-popular cloud services, such as S3 and Azure.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\nFinancials: 29.97% of invested assets\nAlthough it's no longer the largest sector in Buffett's portfolio, financials will always be the Oracle of Omaha's favorite place to put his company's capital to work. In total, Berkshire Hathaway owns a dozen financial stocks worth almost $94.3 billion, as of Sept. 16. This works out to 30% of Berkshire's invested assets.\nThe reason the Oracle of Omaha loves financial stocks has to do with the cyclicality of the sector. Buffett isn't oblivious to the fact that recessions and economic contractions are a normal part of the economic cycle. But he's also keenly aware that recessions only last for a few months or, at most, a couple of quarters. By comparison, periods of economic expansion last years, if not a decade. These long periods of growth allow banks to take advantage of loan and deposit growth.\nLikewise, long periods of economic growth often lead to rising interest rates. As rates and yields rise, banks tend to reap the rewards via added net interest income. Bank of America (NYSE:BAC), the second-largest holding in Buffett's portfolio, is the most interest sensitive of the big bank stocks. Following its second-quarter operating results, Bank of America noted it would net $8 billion in extra net interest income in 12 months with a 100-basis-point parallel shift in the interest rate yield curve. Since this added income derives from outstanding loans, it would pretty much all go straight to BofA's bottom line.\nAnother reason Buffett is a big fan of financials is their robust capital return programs. Take U.S. Bancorp (NYSE:USB) as a perfect example. U.S. Bancorp's focus on the bread-and-butter of banking (loan and deposit growth), coupled with its digitization efforts that have pushed a large number of retail sales online, have led to consistent cash flow and a market-topping yield of 3.2%.\nAs long as Buffett exerts some level of control of Berkshire Hathaway's portfolio, you can count on financial stocks playing a key role.\n\nImage source: Coca-Cola.\nConsumer staples: 11.58% of invested assets\nThe third-largest sector represented in Buffett's portfolio is consumer staples. The five consumer staples stocks that Berkshire Hathaway owns accounted for $36.6 billion in value as of Sept. 16, or a little less than 11.6% of invested assets. For added context, an 11.6% share of invested assets for consumer staples is a more than two-decade low for this sector in Berkshire Hathaway's portfolio.\nThe reason Buffett and his team have long been drawn to consumer staples is the predictability of cash flow from brand-name businesses. By definition, a consumer staple stock sells goods or services that are purchased in pretty much any economic environment. For instance, no matter how well or poorly the U.S. or global economy are performing, people need to buy food, toilet paper, detergent, toothpaste, and a number of other basic need goods and services. Companies that cater to these basic need items often produce predictable cash flow and a market-topping dividend.\nA majority of Berkshire's invested assets in consumer staples lie with Coca-Cola (NYSE:KO) and Kraft Heinz (NASDAQ:KHC).\nCoca-Cola is Berkshire Hathaway's longest-held stock, dating back 33 years. It's arguably the best-known consumer goods company on the planet, and is selling its products in all but two countries worldwide (North Korea and Cuba). Coke also controls a 20% share of the cold beverage market in developed countries and a 10% share in faster-growing emerging markets. It may be a relatively slow-growing company these days, but it's netting Buffett a nearly 52% annual yield, based on Berkshire's initial cost basis.\nAs for Kraft Heinz, it's been one of Buffett's biggest disappointments. The Oracle of Omaha has admitted that Heinz overpaid for Kraft Foods, with the combined company taking a monstrous $15 billion write-down in 2019. First, as the founder, I was determined to award all the subscribers with stock to demonstrate my loyalty to them.</p>\n<p>Second, I was insistent that the deal be priced much lower than the underwriters wanted. We had already made a ton of money for initial investors. Why not leave a lot on the table and let the new investors do well?</p>\n<p>Third, I wanted enough stock placed with good hands that there would be no flippers and I wanted close coordination with the various brokers who tended to infiltrate the process and hijack the openings by batching market orders and opening the stocks way too high and then shorting them all the way down.</p>\n<p>I lost on every single point.</p>\n<p>The underwriters said we could not allocate to subscribers.</p>\n<p>Second, the price of the deal would not be controlled to where we could have a small pop so everyone would win.</p>\n<p>Third, the over-the-transom orders, those who placed market orders, were batched by an outfit called Knight Securities, not the underwriter, Goldman Sachs, and it opened at $62 -- it wasn't even clear what the opening price was it was so chaotic -- traded to $66, like how Robinhood traded to $39 and change, and then never traded higher.</p>\n<p>Everyone who bought that day lost money.</p>\n<p>Everyone who sold that day made money.</p>\n<p>No subscribers got in, most bought at the opening, from what I can tell, and I alienated everyone except the big dogs.</p>\n<p>It is amazing that here we are in 2021 and the process, while letting clients in, failed to price it so that Robinhood left money on the table. Believe me, it was possible to do so. But the underwriters and the management chose not to do so. We don't know which side screwed up, or both, but there was a successful blueprint; believe me, if I knew what it was in 1999, they knew what it is now.</p>\n<p>I always regretted what happened. Most people blamed me as I was the face of the process. I was astounded by how horrendous it was and did not \"take the long view\" because the long view sucked.</p>\n<p>Why do these things go wrong? I do blame the underwriter because they do this every day and the principals only do it once. They have to keep the management from betraying the shareholders because the shareholders think that it is management's fault. No underwriter is EVER going to say that they screwed up. First, as the founder, I was determined to award all the subscribers with stock to demonstrate my loyalty to them.\nSecond, I was insistent that the deal be priced much lower than the underwriters wanted. We had already made a ton of money for initial investors. Why not leave a lot on the table and let the new investors do well?\nThird, I wanted enough stock placed with good hands that there would be no flippers and I wanted close coordination with the various brokers who tended to infiltrate the process and hijack the openings by batching market orders and opening the stocks way too high and then shorting them all the way down.\nI lost on every single point.\nThe underwriters said we could not allocate to subscribers.\nSecond, the price of the deal would not be controlled to where we could have a small pop so everyone would win.\nThird, the over-the-transom orders, those who placed market orders, were batched by an outfit called Knight Securities, not the underwriter, Goldman Sachs, and it opened at $62 -- it wasn't even clear what the opening price was it was so chaotic -- traded to $66, like how Robinhood traded to $39 and change, and then never traded higher.\nEveryone who bought that day lost money.\nEveryone who sold that day made money.\nNo subscribers got in, most bought at the opening, from what I can tell, and I alienated everyone except the big dogs.\nIt is amazing that here we are in 2021 and the process, while letting clients in, failed to price it so that Robinhood left money on the table. Believe me, it was possible to do so. But the underwriters and the management chose not to do so. We don't know which side screwed up, or both, but there was a successful blueprint; believe me, if I knew what it was in 1999, they knew what it is now.\nI always regretted what happened. Most people blamed me as I was the face of the process. I was astounded by how horrendous it was and did not \"take the long view\" because the long view sucked.\nWhy do these things go wrong? I do blame the underwriter because they do this every day and the principals only do it once. While stock splits don't impact a company's valuation directly, they can attract greater numbers of small investors.</p>\n<p>However, there are plenty of even better reasons to like NVIDIA that have nothing to do with its stock split. The most obvious one is the company's gaming business.</p>\n<p>Gaming remains NVIDIA's biggest moneymaker, generating $2.8 billion of the company's total revenue of nearly $5.7 billion in the first quarter of 2021. And business is booming. NVIDIA's gaming revenue more than doubled year over year.</p>\n<p>It isn't just that gaming is increasing in popularity (although that is the case). NVIDIA benefits from regular hardware upgrade cycles. New games require even more processing power, which drives demand for the more powerful graphics processing units (GPUs).</p>\n<p>I especially like that NVIDIA is leveraging its gaming expertise to target new markets. For example, the company recently unveiled Omniverse Enterprise, a platform where design teams can build 3D virtual simulations and collaborate in real-time. In effect, NVIDIA is turning work into play (or vice versa, depending on how you look at it).</p>\n<p>NVIDIA CFO Colette Kress said in the company's Q1 conference call, \"As the world becomes more digital, virtual and collaborative, we see a significant revenue opportunity for Omniverse.\" I think that Kress's optimism is well-founded.</p>\n<p>Don't overlook NVIDIA's potential in the data center market, though. The company posted data center revenue of more than $2 billion in Q1, up 79% year over year. NVIDIA should enjoy sustained growth as more applications include artificial intelligence (AI).</p>\n<p>Assuming NVIDIA's pending acquisition of Arm passes regulatory hurdles, the company should further cement its leadership position in AI. In particular, the Arm deal would boost NVIDIA's presence in the fast-growing Internet of Things market with chips for mobile devices.</p>\n<p>Sure, an overall cryptocurrency crash could cause NVIDIA's shares to fall due to the popularity of the company's GPUs with crypto miners. It's happened before. However, the company has taken steps to segment its gaming business from crypto. I think that any pullback would only be temporary. NVIDIA has too many other strong growth drivers.</p>\n<h2>Moderna</h2>\n<p>Most companies can't honestly say that they've helped change the world.&nbsp;<b>Moderna</b> (NASDAQ:MRNA) can.</p>\n<p>The biotech's COVID-19 vaccine was second only to the vaccine developed by <b>Pfizer</b>&nbsp;and <b>BioNTech</b> to win U.S. Emergency Use Authorization (EUA). Moderna reported $1.9 billion in sales for the vaccine in Q1, but that's just the tip of the iceberg.</p>\n<p>Based on supply agreements in place as of early May, Moderna projected that its COVID-19 vaccine would rake in sales this year of $19.2 billion. However, the company has secured additional deals since then.</p>\n<p>In just the past two weeks, Moderna has landed two new huge supply agreements. The U.S. government is buying 200 million additional doses of Moderna's COVID19 vaccine. The European Commission agreed to purchase another 150 million doses.</p>\n<p>But does Moderna's market cap of close to $90 billion already price all of this growth in? To some extent, yes. However, shares still are trading at only around 10.5 times expected earnings. That's an attractive valuation, especially for a biotech stock.</p>\n<p>The big question for Moderna is how strong the recurring revenue from its COVID-19 vaccine will be. While the sales levels of 2021 and 2022 might not be sustainable over the long run, annual vaccinations could be likely (especially with emerging coronavirus variants). I expect Moderna will be able to count on significant COVID-19 vaccine sales for years to come.</p>\n<p>Then there's the pipeline. Moderna plans to advance its cytomegalovirus (CMV) vaccine into late-stage testing this year. It could easily be a megablockbuster if approved. The company has a dozen other programs in clinical testing.</p>\n<p>Moderna hopes to use its newfound riches to dramatically boost its pipeline in the near future. CEO Stephane Bancel has stated that he'd like to have up to 50 clinical programs.</p>\n<p>All of Moderna's current and planned pipeline programs are based on its messenger RNA (mRNA) technology. The company has maintained for a long time that if its mRNA approach worked for one disease, it would work for many diseases. It looks like some of the Chinese EV maker stocks’ shine has finally rubbed off on Tesla.</p>\n<p><b>Delivery Optimism</b></p>\n<p>The second reason is about second-quarter deliveries, after&nbsp;perceived weakness&nbsp;in Chinese delivery numbers. More recently, however, several&nbsp;reports&nbsp;have been popping up about Tesla working hard to deliver vehicles into the end of this month.</p>\n<p>“After a disaster start to the quarter for Tesla in China, the Street is reading the tea leaves as bullish for the month of June with momentum into [the second half],” Wedbush analyst&nbsp;Dan Ivestells&nbsp;Barron’s. He believes 900,000 deliveries is still possible for 2021. Wall Street is modeling about 825,000. Tesla delivered about 500,000 cars in 2020.</p>\n<p><b>Green Tidal Wave</b></p>\n<p>Ives has also written about a “green tidal wave” coming from the White House. President Joe Biden wants part of any infrastructure bill to include purchase incentives for EVs as well as charging infrastructure. He tweeted Friday that the updated full self-driving, or FSD, software and subscription pricing could roll out in as soon as a week.</p>\n<p>Tesla plans to offer its highest level of&nbsp;driver assistance, called full self-driving or FSD, on a subscription basis. It’s a new era for car companies, which don’t typically get to realize recurring revenue like software providers. We know this because Robinhood added approximately 3 million new users in 2020.</p>\n<p>There are a number of lures for retail investors with Robinhood. For example, Robinhood doesn't charge a commission when stocks that are listed on the New York Stock Exchange or <b>Nasdaq</b>&nbsp;exchange are bought or sold. Robinhood is also <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> of many brokerages that allows for fractional share investing. And, who can forget that Robinhood also gifts free shares of stock to new users.</p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> respect, it's a fantastic thing to see young people putting their money to work. Time is the biggest ally investors have. The earlier they start putting their money to work, the better chance they have of compounding their nest egg.</p>\n<p>On the other hand, Robinhood's retail investors have been buying some really awful stocks. Table by author.</p>\n<h2>Continuing to chase meme stocks</h2>\n<p>Like bees to honey, retail investors have been inseparable from meme stocks for almost six months. A meme stock is a company valued more for its social media favorability/hype than its operating performance.</p>\n<p>Since mid-January, retail investors have been banding together to buy shares and out-of-the-money call options on stocks with high levels of short interest. In many instances, companies with high levels of short interest have poor-performing businesses. This is how we've witnessed GameStop and AMC Entertainment become extremely popular on Robinhood.</p>\n<p>The good news for GameStop is that it's been able to use its monumental run to sell shares of common stock and raise capital. It's completely erased its debt and given itself more than enough cash to oversee its ongoing transformation into a digital gaming company. To be clear, this doesn't negate the fact that GameStop's previous management team completely dropped the ball on the shift to digital gaming. What it does do is give the company enough capital to at least attempt a transformation.</p>\n<p>The same can't be said for AMC, which sold the vast majority of its shares six months ago to avoid bankruptcy. Even with a handful of recent capital raises, AMC has well over $3 billion in net debt, and its 2027 bond prices indicate the company is still a bankruptcy risk.</p>\n<p>To make matters worse, movie theater ticket sales have been in a 19-year decline. Even with a larger share of the movie theater industry, AMC's pie is shrinking. It's pretty clear that social media hype, ignorance of fundamental data, and misinformation are the key drivers behind AMC's irrational rally.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/bc514068ded899a817770f684369db36\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>Canadian cannabis binge</h2>\n<p>Robinhood's retail investors also have quite the crush on Canadian marijuana stocks. Five of the 33 most-held companies on Robinhood's leaderboard hail from our neighbor to the north.</p>\n<p>Even though cannabis-focused research company BDSA has forecasted weed sales growth in Canada from $2.6 billion in 2020 to $6.4 billion by 2026, the Canadian pot industry has been a disaster. Regulators have caused all sorts of supply chain issues, consumers have flocked to lower-margin value brands, and Canadian marijuana stocks overzealously expanded and, in some instances, decimated their balance sheets in the process.</p>\n<p>Robinhood investors' fascination with Sundial Growers is nothing short of frustrating. It may well be the single most-avoidable marijuana stock. Although its management team was able to pay off the company's existing debt by issuing stock and conducting debt-for-equity swaps, these share offerings simply haven't stopped. In a little over a seven-month stretch, more than 1.35 billion shares were issued. Sundial is showing zero regard for its shareholders, and its management team hasn't even laid out a concrete plan for how it'll spend its cash.</p>\n<p>We've seen similar issues from Aurora Cannabis, the second most-popular Canadian weed stock. Once the most-held stock on Robinhood, Aurora has drowned its shareholders in dilution. Even after selling one of its greenhouses and shuttering a number of other cultivation facilities, its cost-cutting has put it nowhere near close to generating a profit. As long as Aurora keeps burning through cash, its management team will continue to issue stock.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e0e9f554fbd3314fbbb8ba78c5a65d3e\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"524\"><span>Image source: American Airlines.</span></p>\n<h2>An obsession with travel companies</h2>\n<p>Another absolute head-scratcher is Robinhood investors' obsession with travel companies -- specifically airlines and cruise ship operators.</p>\n<p>On one hand, the case could be made that the coronavirus pandemic overly punished the travel industry. Though we remain firmly in a global pandemic, increased domestic vaccination rates offer hope that the U.S. could soon put the pandemic in the rearview mirror. For instance, the Transportation Security Administration screened over 2 million passengers in a single day in mid-June for the first time since before the pandemic was declared.</p>\n<p>On the other hand, the travel industry tends to be built on mediocre margins, at best, and it typically requires the economy to be running on all cylinders. Despite recovering from a recession, most airline stocks are now lugging around billions in extra debt that they didn't have two years ago. American Airlines, which I've previously anointed as the worst airline stock, has $34 billion in net debt and $48 billion in aggregate debt. The interest American Airlines is going to have to pay to service this debt could cripple its growth initiatives for the next decade.</p>\n<p>Meanwhile, companies like Norwegian Cruise Line came perilously close to bankruptcy during the pandemic. Unlike airlines, which are essential for business travel, cruise ships aren't essential. They'll remain at the mercy of the pandemic until it's firmly in the rearview mirror. That means Norwegian may continue losing money well into 2022, if not beyond.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2bd808070a9dde55f37210b59edc2e23\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"393\"><span>A Tesla Model S plugged in for charging. If we also include Plug Power, FuelCell Energy, and Ideanomics, that's nine of the top 48 Robinhood stocks that are devoted to alternative energy adoption for autos.</p>\n<p>There's pretty much no question at this point that EVs and potentially hydrogen fuel cells represent the future of the automotive industry. There's a multi-decade opportunity for consumers and enterprise fleets to switch over to alternative solutions, as well as for ancillary players to build the infrastructure necessary to support EVs and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles.</p>\n<p>The issue is that investors have a tendency to overestimate how quickly new technology is adopted, and that's likely what we're witnessing with EVs. The fact that Tesla is worth $647 billion is ludicrous considering that it hasn't demonstrated it can generate a profit from selling its EVs. The only way Tesla has been able to generate a profit is by selling renewable energy credits or taking a one-time benefit from the sale of <b>Bitcoin</b>.</p>\n<p>The EV space is growing increasingly more crowded, and the major auto stocks are investing tens of billions into new models. Despite the broad-based S&P 500 shedding 34% of its value in about a month during the first quarter of 2020, we've watched the benchmark index catapult more than 90% off of its lows.\nFor some investors, volatility is something they fear. But for predominantly young and novice retail investors, volatility is the impetus that's driven them to put their money to work in the stock market.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nAs volatility has whipsawed the market, these younger retail investors have found their home with online investing app Robinhood. We know this because Robinhood added approximately 3 million new users in 2020.\nThere are a number of lures for retail investors with Robinhood. For example, Robinhood doesn't charge a commission when stocks that are listed on the New York Stock Exchange or Nasdaq exchange are bought or sold. Robinhood is also one of many brokerages that allows for fractional share investing. And, who can forget that Robinhood also gifts free shares of stock to new users.\nIn one respect, it's a fantastic thing to see young people putting their money to work. Time is the biggest ally investors have. The earlier they start putting their money to work, the better chance they have of compounding their nest egg.\nOn the other hand, Robinhood's retail investors have been buying some really awful stocks. Table by author.\nContinuing to chase meme stocks\nLike bees to honey, retail investors have been inseparable from meme stocks for almost six months. A meme stock is a company valued more for its social media favorability/hype than its operating performance.\nSince mid-January, retail investors have been banding together to buy shares and out-of-the-money call options on stocks with high levels of short interest. In many instances, companies with high levels of short interest have poor-performing businesses. This is how we've witnessed GameStop and AMC Entertainment become extremely popular on Robinhood.\nThe good news for GameStop is that it's been able to use its monumental run to sell shares of common stock and raise capital. It's completely erased its debt and given itself more than enough cash to oversee its ongoing transformation into a digital gaming company. To be clear, this doesn't negate the fact that GameStop's previous management team completely dropped the ball on the shift to digital gaming. What it does do is give the company enough capital to at least attempt a transformation.\nThe same can't be said for AMC, which sold the vast majority of its shares six months ago to avoid bankruptcy. Even with a handful of recent capital raises, AMC has well over $3 billion in net debt, and its 2027 bond prices indicate the company is still a bankruptcy risk.\nTo make matters worse, movie theater ticket sales have been in a 19-year decline. Even with a larger share of the movie theater industry, AMC's pie is shrinking. It's pretty clear that social media hype, ignorance of fundamental data, and misinformation are the key drivers behind AMC's irrational rally.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nCanadian cannabis binge\nRobinhood's retail investors also have quite the crush on Canadian marijuana stocks. Five of the 33 most-held companies on Robinhood's leaderboard hail from our neighbor to the north.\nEven though cannabis-focused research company BDSA has forecasted weed sales growth in Canada from $2.6 billion in 2020 to $6.4 billion by 2026, the Canadian pot industry has been a disaster. Regulators have caused all sorts of supply chain issues, consumers have flocked to lower-margin value brands, and Canadian marijuana stocks overzealously expanded and, in some instances, decimated their balance sheets in the process.\nRobinhood investors' fascination with Sundial Growers is nothing short of frustrating. It may well be the single most-avoidable marijuana stock. Although its management team was able to pay off the company's existing debt by issuing stock and conducting debt-for-equity swaps, these share offerings simply haven't stopped. In a little over a seven-month stretch, more than 1.35 billion shares were issued. Sundial is showing zero regard for its shareholders, and its management team hasn't even laid out a concrete plan for how it'll spend its cash.\nWe've seen similar issues from Aurora Cannabis, the second most-popular Canadian weed stock. Once the most-held stock on Robinhood, Aurora has drowned its shareholders in dilution. Even after selling one of its greenhouses and shuttering a number of other cultivation facilities, its cost-cutting has put it nowhere near close to generating a profit. As long as Aurora keeps burning through cash, its management team will continue to issue stock.\nImage source: American Airlines.\nAn obsession with travel companies\nAnother absolute head-scratcher is Robinhood investors' obsession with travel companies -- specifically airlines and cruise ship operators.\nOn one hand, the case could be made that the coronavirus pandemic overly punished the travel industry. Though we remain firmly in a global pandemic, increased domestic vaccination rates offer hope that the U.S. could soon put the pandemic in the rearview mirror. For instance, the Transportation Security Administration screened over 2 million passengers in a single day in mid-June for the first time since before the pandemic was declared.\nOn the other hand, the travel industry tends to be built on mediocre margins, at best, and it typically requires the economy to be running on all cylinders. Despite recovering from a recession, most airline stocks are now lugging around billions in extra debt that they didn't have two years ago. American Airlines, which I've previously anointed as the worst airline stock, has $34 billion in net debt and $48 billion in aggregate debt. The interest American Airlines is going to have to pay to service this debt could cripple its growth initiatives for the next decade.\nMeanwhile, companies like Norwegian Cruise Line came perilously close to bankruptcy during the pandemic. Unlike airlines, which are essential for business travel, cruise ships aren't essential. They'll remain at the mercy of the pandemic until it's firmly in the rearview mirror.
