In the past week, it has turned into a flood, helping to push the price of Bitcoin to a record of $48,297 on Thursday.

The most buzzworthy move came from Tesla (ticker: TSLA), which disclosed on Monday that it hasbought $1.5 billion worth of Bitcointo hold on its balance sheet. The company plans to let consumers use the currency to pay for cars.

But Tesla isn’t the only one. On Thursday, BNY Mellon (BK), the oldest bank in the U.S.,said it will hold and transfer cryptocurrencies for customers. “Growing client demand for digital assets, maturity of advanced solutions, and improving regulatory clarity present a tremendous opportunity for us to extend our current service offerings to this emerging field,” said Roman Regelman, the bank’s CEO of asset servicing and head of digital.

Mastercard (MA) said on Wednesday that it will let merchants accept some cryptocurrencies through its network later this year. The payments will be converted to traditional money before it enters the companies’ systems.Twitter(TWTR) is also considering a Bitcoin investment. And Square (SQ) has already put some on its balance sheet, as well as given users of its Cash App access to buy the cryptocurrency.

Why is this happening now? Cryptocurrencies are still not particularly useful outside of a very few cases, such as cross-border transactions. Even there, they haven’t fully taken hold.

There are at least four big reasons corporations are diving in.

One is that some company founders believe in Bitcoin. Their excitement about the asset has convinced them that their companies need to be involved, or have cryptocurrency investments, even if Bitcoin isn’t really the core of their operations. That appears to be the case for Tesla and its CEO Elon Musk, and for a software company calledMicrostrategyand its CEO, Michael Saylor.

Microstrategy, whose entire market capitalization was below $1 billion early last year, now owns more than $2 billion of Bitcoin, and its market cap is now just under $10 billion. Saylor toldBarron’s in an interview last yearthat he sees Bitcoin as a hedge against monetary debasement and inflation.

Square CEO Jack Dorsey ‘s fascination with Bitcoin also likely sped Square’s adoption. He has spoken about his interest in the currency for years.

Tesla’s purchase of Bitcoin is strong marketing for the company and the currency, said Dan Morehead, founder of the crypto hedge fund Pantera Capital. But it won’t likely change the way Bitcoin is used. “Tesla sells a half a million cars a year,” he said. “If they sold 4% in Bitcoin, I’d be surprised.” Morehead thinks Bitoin’s growing use for cross-border payments is much more exciting from a practical perspective.

Other companies are getting into Bitcoin because of customer demand. That appears to be the case for BNY Mellon, which is not known for making risky bets on new technologies. It could stay out of the industry altogether, but more institutional investors are buying Bitcoin and need somewhere to put it.

And the infrastructure around Bitcoin has grown, so that it now more closely resembles the systems used in the rest of the world of finance.. Big companies now insure cryptocurrencies or—as in the case ofJPMorgan Chase(JPM)—offer services to cryptocurrency businesses, even if most still don’t hold Bitcoin on their own balance sheets.

A third reason is increasing government acceptance of the trend. BNY cited greater regulatory clarity around Bitcoin as one reason it is diving in. The U.S. government has taken a mostly laissez-faire approach to regulating digital assets even as many of the illegal activities that cryptocurrency has been associated with in the past have continued. Without at least the tacit approval of regulators, crypto couldn’t have landed on the balance sheets of so many companies.

A fourth reason cryptocurrencies are gaining hold in corporate boardrooms is that they serve multiple purposes. That gives corporations several different rationales to hold the coins, or offer related services. Cryptocurrencies have the potential to go well beyond Bitcoin’s initial premise as a way to send money without financial intermediaries. So-called stablecoins, whose value is meant to track fiat currencies, could allow for faster transactions for some kinds of financial services, for instance.

Visa(V) andMasterCardseem like the last places in the world that Bitcoin would take hold given that Bitcoin was created to eliminate the middlemen in finance. Few companies fill the role of middleman as perfectly as the credit-card processors. Visa, however, thinks that cryptocurrencies are useful for many other purposes, and its trusted brand makes it an important player, according to Cuy Sheffield, head of crypto at the company.

“We’ve seen growing demand from clients across the world that want to be able to plug in and use these networks, but they want a global, neutral, trusted brand, to help them be able to do that,” Sheffield said in an interview. Visa said last week it has created software that allows bank customers to buy and hold cryptocurrencies through lenders’ websites.

Will old-line financial companies be the biggest beneficiaries of the crypto “revolution”? Michael Venuto, the chief investment officer of Toroso Investments, doesn’t think it will be easy for them to dominate this new world. Toroso created theAmplify Transformational Data SharingETF (ticker: BLOK), which invests in public companies involved in the technology behind Bitcoin.

“In terms of the self-referenced paradox of the old economy accepting the blockchain, it is simply inevitable,” Venuto wrote in an email toBarron’s. “If they don’t explore the blockchain they will be extinct. They understand that, but they are not aware of how big the changes will be or how fast they will happen. Cohen. It started the year with about $12.5 billion and now runs more than $8 billion. The current figure includes $2.75 billion in emergency funds Citadel LLC, its partners and Mr. Cohen's Point72 Asset Management injected into the hedge fund last Monday.\nAs part of the deal, they got non-controlling revenue shares in Melvin for three years. So far, Citadel, its partners and Point72 have lost money on the deal, though the precise scope of the loss was unclear Sunday.\nMelvin has massively de-risked its portfolio, said a client. People familiar with the hedge fund said its leverage ratio -- the value of its assets compared with its capital from investors -- was the lowest it has been since Melvin's 2014 start. They also said the firm's position-level liquidity, or its ability to exit securities in its portfolio easily, had increased significantly.\nNew and existing clients have signed up to invest money into Melvin on Feb. 1, according to the people familiar. It was unclear how much they would be adding.\nMelvin had established itself in recent years as one of the top hedge funds on Wall Street, but a short position in GameStop Corp. hurt the firm in recent weeks. Losses extended beyond GameStop, with declines coming from throughout its portfolio during a period of market turmoil in January. Positions in which Melvin had publicly disclosed owning put options -- bearish contracts that typically profit as stocks fall -- in its last quarterly regulatory filing soared, while positions in companies it held sold off.\nBed Bath & Beyond Inc., New York-listed Chinese tutoring company GSX Techedu Inc. and National Beverage Corp. were up 78.4%, 62% and 99% at their intraweek highs last week, respectively. Meanwhile, Booking Holdings Inc. and Expedia Group Inc. were down 9.9% and 13.4% at their intraweek lows.\nTraders say as GameStop continued to soar -- f rom $30 to $75 and higher -- there was a contagion effect. Managers lost confidence short positions would stop rising in value and covered heavily shorted names, worried social media-fueled investors would focus on companies they were short. They also started cutting their stakes in companies to reduce the risk in their portfolios, hurting other investors in those companies. Last week alone, GameStop shares soared more than four times.\n\"The performance pain...has been record breaking,\" read a note from Morgan Stanley to its trading clients last week.\nIndeed, hedge funds set near-daily records of various sorts last week for how much they pulled back their exposure to the U.S. stock market by covering their shorts and selling out of their wagers on companies, according to client notes from Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. On Wednesday, this type of so-called degrossing contributed to the largest one-day drop in funds' use of leverage on record, said a Goldman note.\nMaplelane Capital, another hedge fund that has sustained significant losses this month, ended January with a roughly 45% loss, said a person familiar with the fund. It managed about $3.5 billion at the start of the year.\nThe frenetic trading that catapulted GameStop, AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. and BlackBerry Ltd. into the ranks of the most traded stocks in the U.S. market and captured the attention of the White House and regulators also hit prominent hedge funds Point72 and D1 Capital Partners.\nD1, which ended the month down about 20%, was short AMC and GameStop, said people familiar with the fund. One of the people said D1 had exited both positions by Wednesday morning but that those were small drivers of losses. A more significant factor was shares of travel-related companies declining.\nSome fund managers say the episode is likely to change how the industry works.\nFewer hedge funds are likely to highlight their bearish positions by disclosing put options, they said. Instead, funds may use Securities and Exchange Commission rules to keep confidential those positions, a tool activist investors have long used to build positions in companies quietly. More funds also may institute rules about avoiding thinly traded, heavily shorted stocks.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":365,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3561105062822231","authorId":"3561105062822231","name":"phanghuiying","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1e6de359b1f4fa96675ee77832707304","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"idStr":"3561105062822231","authorIdStr":"3561105062822231"},"content":"Yup [Happy]","text":"Yup [Happy]","html":"Yup [Happy]"}],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":386033629,"gmtCreate":1613107491861,"gmtModify":1704878483473,"author":{"id":"3561102963736661","authorId":"3561102963736661","name":"kylerwsm","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a43845a47cc0ce18120e903c1eaffb3f","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3561102963736661","authorIdStr":"3561102963736661"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Eventually, regulations with Bitcoin will be the tipping point for its price","listText":"Eventually, regulations with Bitcoin will be the tipping point for its price","text":"Eventually, regulations with Bitcoin will be the tipping point for its price","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/386033629","repostId":"1179092967","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1179092967","pubTimestamp":1613100617,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1179092967?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-02-12 11:30","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Not Just Tesla: Why Big Companies are Buying into Crypto-Mania","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1179092967","media":"barrons","summary":"For months, there has beena consistent trickle of newsabout mainstream businesses getting involved in cryptocurrencies.

Bitcoin soared about 200% last year. In","content":"
The price of Bitcoin has been going through the roof lately. Bitcoin soared about 200% last year. Institutional interest has mainly led to this buoyancy. The cryptocurrency took less than a month to cross the difference of $20,000 in value as it hit the $20,000 mark for the first time on Dec 16 and touched $40,000 on Jan 7. If this was not enough, bitcoin crossed the 47,000 mark on Feb 8.
\n
The latest all-time high level was attained by virtue of Tesla’s investment of $1.5 billion, which made it the biggest company to show support to the otherwisecontroversial cryptocurrency.Tesla would start accepting payment for its electric vehicles in the currency. Before this,PayPal Holdings Inc had also announced such a move. PayPal's competitor Square launched support for bitcoin back in 2018 through its Cash app. Square also bought $50 million in bitcoin in October as part of a larger investment in cryptocurrency.
\n
Corporations’ greater acceptance in allowing customers to hold bitcoin and other virtual coins in their online wallets has been favoring the cryptocurrency. Facebook-backed cryptocurrency Libra has also been rebranded “Diem” in an effort to gain regulatory approval by refurbishing the project in a simpler manner. It is run by a consortium called the Diem Association.
\n
David Marcus, the head of Facebook Financial, also known as F2, said he hopes the cryptocurrency called Diem will hit the market in 2021. A bitcoin ETF could finally see the day of the light in 2021 as VanEck recently filed an application with the SEC. Notably, the SEC had earlier rejected several bitcoin ETF proposals (read: VanEck Files for a Bitcoin ETF All Over Again).
\n
More Corporate Acceptance Awaiting Ahead?Antoni Trenchev, managing partner and co-founder of Nexo in London (one of the world’s biggest crypto lender), expects at least 10% of S&P 500 companies to remain invested in Bitcoin by the end of 2022,as quoted in a source.
\n
Sergey Nazarov, the cofounder of Chainlink, said a few days back that “rising inflation and increasingly negative views of modern monetary policy are forcing investors to look for alternative ways to preserve the value of their capital,” as quoted on Businessinsider. Investors are probably viewing it as a hedge against inflation and an alternative to the depreciating dollar, per market watchers.
\n
Will the Rally Continue? The biggest problem with bitcoin mining is that the number of coins will be fixed. “Bitcoin was designed to be created at a fixed rate, which means miners must compete against each other to win coins. The number of bitcoins created annually automatically decreases over time and issuance will end with a total of 21 million bitcoins in circulation. The more time passes, the harder computers have to work to mine new bitcoins. There are currently more than 18 million bitcoins in circulation,”per a Reuters article.
\n
So, there is no way that the 21 million will be exhausted soon. But will it be interesting to see what happens after that? Yes, “the bitcoin mining process provides bitcoin rewards to miners, but the reward size is decreased periodically to control the circulation of new tokens,” as indicated byan Investopedia article.
\n
If more circulation of currency is not possible with economic growth, one should not expect much stability in that currency’s trading. Bitcoin has been extremely volatile in the past, and will continue to remain so in the future too. Plus, one should take a closer look at the inflationary scenario. If there is disinflation in various parts of the globe due to any further COVID-19 crisis, bitcoin may slip again.
\n
Stocks to PlayHence, it is wise bet on Crypto Innovators that are more stable.'Crypto Innovators' are the stocks of \"companiesthat service and transact in the segment of the economy dealing with crypto assets and distributed ledger technology (e.g., blockchain technology).\"
\n
Riot Blockchain – The Zacks Rank #3 company leverages its expertise and network to build and support blockchain technology companies. Shares surged 40.3% on Feb 8.
\n
NVIDIA – The company is poised to benefit from its GPUs in the cryptocurrency space.Chinese cryptocurrency miners are dealing with a scarcity of Nvidia's GeForce RTX 30 desktop graphics cards by turning to GeForce RTX 30-powered laptops, according to social media posts examined by Wccftech and Cointelegraph,as quoted on seekingalpha. NVDA was up 6.2% on Feb 8.
\n
Cleanspark Inc. – The Zacks Rank #3 microgrid company provides energy software and control technology. From Dec 10, 2020the first full-day of mining following the acquisition of its wholly owned subsidiary ATL Data Centers LLC, through the end of the calendar year, CleanSpark produced 31 bitcoins from its mining activities. Production since the first of the year has exceeded 4.3 bitcoins. The stock added 8.1% on Feb 8.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
How Long Will the Tesla-Driven Bitcoin Rally Last?
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nHow Long Will the Tesla-Driven Bitcoin Rally Last?\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-02-10 11:19 GMT+8 zacks\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
The price of Bitcoin has been going through the roof lately. The cryptocurrency took less than a month to cross the difference of $20,000 in value as it hit the $20,000 mark for the first time on Dec 16 and touched $40,000 on Jan 7. If this was not enough, bitcoin crossed the 47,000 mark on Feb 8.\nThe latest all-time high level was attained by virtue of Tesla’s investment of $1.5 billion, which made it the biggest company to show support to the otherwisecontroversial cryptocurrency.Tesla would start accepting payment for its electric vehicles in the currency. Before this,PayPal Holdings Inc had also announced such a move. PayPal's competitor Square launched support for bitcoin back in 2018 through its Cash app. Square also bought $50 million in bitcoin in October as part of a larger investment in cryptocurrency.\nCorporations’ greater acceptance in allowing customers to hold bitcoin and other virtual coins in their online wallets has been favoring the cryptocurrency. Facebook-backed cryptocurrency Libra has also been rebranded “Diem” in an effort to gain regulatory approval by refurbishing the project in a simpler manner. It is run by a consortium called the Diem Association.\nDavid Marcus, the head of Facebook Financial, also known as F2, said he hopes the cryptocurrency called Diem will hit the market in 2021. A bitcoin ETF could finally see the day of the light in 2021 as VanEck recently filed an application with the SEC. Notably, the SEC had earlier rejected several bitcoin ETF proposals (read: VanEck Files for a Bitcoin ETF All Over Again).\nMore Corporate Acceptance Awaiting Ahead?Antoni Trenchev, managing partner and co-founder of Nexo in London (one of the world’s biggest crypto lender), expects at least 10% of S&P 500 companies to remain invested in Bitcoin by the end of 2022,as quoted in a source.\nSergey Nazarov, the cofounder of Chainlink, said a few days back that “rising inflation and increasingly negative views of modern monetary policy are forcing investors to look for alternative ways to preserve the value of their capital,” as quoted on Businessinsider. Investors are probably viewing it as a hedge against inflation and an alternative to the depreciating dollar, per market watchers.\nWill the Rally Continue? The biggest problem with bitcoin mining is that the number of coins will be fixed. “Bitcoin was designed to be created at a fixed rate, which means miners must compete against each other to win coins. The number of bitcoins created annually automatically decreases over time and issuance will end with a total of 21 million bitcoins in circulation. The more time passes, the harder computers have to work to mine new bitcoins. There are currently more than 18 million bitcoins in circulation,”per a Reuters article.\nSo, there is no way that the 21 million will be exhausted soon. But will it be interesting to see what happens after that? Yes, “the bitcoin mining process provides bitcoin rewards to miners, but the reward size is decreased periodically to control the circulation of new tokens,” as indicated byan Investopedia article.\nIf more circulation of currency is not possible with economic growth, one should not expect much stability in that currency’s trading. Bitcoin has been extremely volatile in the past, and will continue to remain so in the future too. Plus, one should take a closer look at the inflationary scenario. If there is disinflation in various parts of the globe due to any further COVID-19 crisis, bitcoin may slip again.\nStocks to PlayHence, it is wise bet on Crypto Innovators that are more stable.'Crypto Innovators' are the stocks of \"companiesthat service and transact in the segment of the economy dealing with crypto assets and distributed ledger technology (e.g., blockchain technology).\"\nRiot Blockchain – The Zacks Rank #3 company leverages its expertise and network to build and support blockchain technology companies.
