Core inflation (which excludes the volatile gas and food categories) was up 4.5% year-over-year. Both were up 0.9% over last month, the biggest jump since 2008.</p>\n<p>Here’s what analysts had to say about the report, and what it means going forward.</p>\n<p><b>Good news and bad news</b></p>\n<p>A big question surrounding inflation recently is whether it’s transitory or more likely to become more sustained. (“An episode of one-time price increases as the economy reopens is not likely to lead to persistent year-over-year inflation into the future,” Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said in April.)</p>\n<p>Bank of America's economics team pointed out that its \"meter\" recently showed historic temporary inflation.</p>\n<p>“The bad news is that we are still not out of the woods, as core CPI and core PCE % year-over-year inflation are likely to remain elevated through year-end and into early 2022,” the bank’s Alexander Lin wrote in a note to clients. “The good news is that we are likely near the peak, at least for the next few months, as base effects are less favorable and shortage pressures rotate away from goods towards services.”</p>\n<p>Furthermore, Lin continued, “There is even risk that transitory inflation turns into transitory disinflation.” If that happened, it could change the Fed’s position.</p>\n<p>The supply and demand shocks have been unlike anything in recent memory, with the pandemic leading to shortages and demand shocks and then reopening causing a demand whiplash. The pendulum could swing the other way.</p>\n<p>“A big question for goods and commodities inflation once the shortages and bottlenecks ease is whether there will be a leveling off in prices or a negative payback,” Lin wrote. “Thus, transitory disinflation could be substantial next year. This could create a new challenge for Fed communication and the hiking timeline.”</p>\n<p><b>More broad-based than usual</b></p>\n<p>Expectations going into the inflation numbers focused on energy costs, which has an outsize impact on the CPI number.</p>\n<p>In a preview note, DataTrek’s Nicholas Colas pointed out that gas price inflation played a big role, making up 40% of June’s headline (total, unadjusted for gas and food) inflation.</p>\n<p>Gas played a big role in inflation, but as Peter Essele, Head of Investment Management for Commonwealth Financial Network, wrote, inflation was felt across the board in many areas.</p>\n<p>“It appears the June increase was more broad-based in nature with spillover into the core components of CPI, notably the services component. Shelter, for instance, which makes up roughly one-third of headline CPI is slowly marching higher, with June’s print showing an increase 2.6% year-over-year,” he wrote. “Used cars and trucks prices have increased 45% over the last year, which signals the largest move ever.”</p>\n<p><b>Still no answers as to what’s permanent</b></p>\n<p>Analysts were surprised by higher-than-expected total and core CPI metrics. But the numbers did little to clarify the biggest question: how permanent is any of this?</p>\n<p>In a note to clients, TD Securities analysts said they thought the inflation increases in travel and used vehicles meant that the inflation was \"largely\" transitory. The big issue it saw was in rents reaccelerating up after a slowdown last year, which would point to something more permanent.</p>\n<p>\"As we illustrated once again in our latest US CPI Scanner, some private sector data tracking rents show much more strengthening than the CPI data in recent months, but the same data showed much more weakening in 2020,” analysts wrote.</p>\n<p>Frustratingly for those who want more certainty, this could still be transitory, however.</p>\n<p>“Some of the strengthening in rents could also be transitory to the extent the boost from reopening is at its peak now,” the note said.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d3582073f113b6736eb2de8224fd02d8\" tg-width=\"705\" tg-height=\"470\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - JUNE 10: A customer shops for meat at a supermarket on June 10, 2021 in Chicago, Illinois. (Photo by Scott Olson/Getty Images)More</p>\n<p><b>What this means for the Federal Reserve</b></p>\n<p>One of the Federal Reserve’s key jobs is to control inflation, so of course, the data begs the question: What will the Fed do? Will it maintain its easy money policies meant to boost the economy through the pandemic?</p>\n<p>Bank of America's Lin said the bank doesn't \"believe this report changes much for the Fed.” The reason, echoed by TD Securities analysts, is because these price increases seem to be largely transitory, at least with the data we have now. And if this period is indeed almost over, transitory deflation or some opposite pendulum swing is something the Fed might not want to make worse.</p>\n<p>Still, the latest data makes it harder for this “wait and see” to continue, ING’s James Knightley wrote.</p>\n<p>“Yet another blowout inflation reading makes it increasingly difficult for the Fed to stick to its position that elevated inflation readings are merely ‘transitory,’” Knightley wrote. Both were up 0.9% over last month, the biggest jump since 2008.\nHere’s what analysts had to say about the report, and what it means going forward.\nGood news and bad news\nA big question surrounding inflation recently is whether it’s transitory or more likely to become more sustained. (“An episode of one-time price increases as the economy reopens is not likely to lead to persistent year-over-year inflation into the future,” Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said in April.)\nBank of America's economics team pointed out that its \"meter\" recently showed historic temporary inflation.\n“The bad news is that we are still not out of the woods, as core CPI and core PCE % year-over-year inflation are likely to remain elevated through year-end and into early 2022,” the bank’s Alexander Lin wrote in a note to clients. “The good news is that we are likely near the peak, at least for the next few months, as base effects are less favorable and shortage pressures rotate away from goods towards services.”\nFurthermore, Lin continued, “There is even risk that transitory inflation turns into transitory disinflation.” If that happened, it could change the Fed’s position.\nThe supply and demand shocks have been unlike anything in recent memory, with the pandemic leading to shortages and demand shocks and then reopening causing a demand whiplash. The pendulum could swing the other way.\n“A big question for goods and commodities inflation once the shortages and bottlenecks ease is whether there will be a leveling off in prices or a negative payback,” Lin wrote. “Thus, transitory disinflation could be substantial next year. This could create a new challenge for Fed communication and the hiking timeline.”\nMore broad-based than usual\nExpectations going into the inflation numbers focused on energy costs, which has an outsize impact on the CPI number.\nIn a preview note, DataTrek’s Nicholas Colas pointed out that gas price inflation played a big role, making up 40% of June’s headline (total, unadjusted for gas and food) inflation.\nGas played a big role in inflation, but as Peter Essele, Head of Investment Management for Commonwealth Financial Network, wrote, inflation was felt across the board in many areas.\n“It appears the June increase was more broad-based in nature with spillover into the core components of CPI, notably the services component. Shelter, for instance, which makes up roughly one-third of headline CPI is slowly marching higher, with June’s print showing an increase 2.6% year-over-year,” he wrote. “Used cars and trucks prices have increased 45% over the last year, which signals the largest move ever.”\nStill no answers as to what’s permanent\nAnalysts were surprised by higher-than-expected total and core CPI metrics. But the numbers did little to clarify the biggest question: how permanent is any of this?\nIn a note to clients, TD Securities analysts said they thought the inflation increases in travel and used vehicles meant that the inflation was \"largely\" transitory. The stock opened at $64.50, and currently trades in the high $80s -- which gives it a market capitalization of nearly $50 billion. FY = fiscal year.</p>\n<h2>But is Roblox a fad or a new content platform?</h2>\n<p>However, there are some key differences between Roblox and Unity.</p>\n<p>Roblox is a platform that enables younger users, many of whom don't have any coding experience, to build simple block-based games and share them with other players. Unity is an advanced game development engine that powers over half of the world's mobile, PC, and console games.</p>\n<p>Roblox encourages users to monetize their games with an in-app currency called Robux within its walled garden. Unity offers developers more flexible tools for integrating in-app ads, in-app purchases, and other features into their games.</p>\n<p>The bulls claim Roblox's self-sustaining cycle of content creation, self-promotion, and monetization will fuel its long-term growth. The bears will point out that half of the platform's daily active users (DAUs) are under the age of 13, and they might eventually grow out of Roblox's simple experiences or graduate to a more advanced game development engine like Unity.</p>\n<p>The bulls will point to Roblox's growth rates. Between the first quarters of 2018 and 2021, Roblox's DAUs more than quadrupled from 10.3 million to 42.1 million, its total hours engaged surged from 2.1 billion to 9.7 billion, and its average bookings per DAU jumped from $11.62 to $15.48.</p>\n<p>Roblox's revenue rose 56% in 2019, soared 82% in 2020, and analysts expect 167% growth this year. But next year, they expect its revenue to rise just 26% after the pandemic ends and more students return to school.</p>\n<p>The bears will point out Roblox isn't profitable, and it probably can't achieve profitability without reducing its exchange rate between U.S. dollars and Robux for developers. However, doing so could alienate its developers and throttle the platform's output of new content.</p>\n<h2>Why Roblox probably can't hit $1 trillion by 2030</h2>\n<p>Even if Roblox maintains a premium price-to-sales ratio of 20 through 2030, it would need to generate $50 billion in annual sales to hit the $1 trillion mark. Roblox generated just $933 million in revenues in 2020, so it would need to generate a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of nearly 50% to hit $50 billion by 2030.</p>\n<p>If Roblox's valuations cool off, as they'll likely do over the years, it will need to generate an ever higher CAGR to become a $1 trillion company. By comparison, Amazon grew its revenues at a CAGR of 27.4% over the past decade -- and it currently trades at just four times this year's sales. Therefore, it seems highly unlikely Roblox will become a $1 trillion company within the next decade.</p>\n<p>But that doesn't mean Roblox won't generate multibagger gains over the next decade. It could remain popular long after the pandemic passes, attract a new generation of younger users, and launch more powerful tools for advanced users. As it continues to expand, economies of scale should kick in and strengthen its earnings growth. (AAPL) is at a new high... again. But this time feels a little different.</p>\n<p>Market valuations, in general, are stretched, as stocks just notched the 2nd best first half of the year performance in history (up ~14%).</p>\n<p>Interest rates don't seem to know where they are going.</p>\n<p>Inflation is spiking (although many think this is \"transitory\").</p>\n<p>Unemployment is still stubbornly high.</p>\n<p>You get the picture... there's uncertainty.</p>\n<p>All that said, I could make a case for Apple to go either higher or lower over the short term... and there is one chart, in particular, that could dictate that!</p>\n<p><b>The Most Important Chart For Apple</b></p>\n<p>As much as we all like to talk about 5G rollouts and the growth of Apple's wearables segment, nothing will be more important to the stock over the next 12 months than what is in the chart below.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/cc8b9e7dd9a7a29241bc334872748b52\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"377\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">Yes, this is a chart of Apple's stock price vs. the 10 Year Treasury rate. We are at that point in the cycle, folks. Growth stocks are already starting to react to movements in rates... and even Apple has not been able to hide from it.</p>\n<p>The good and the bad of this is that if interest rates stay low (the good), Apple will likely continue to trend higher... but if rates spike (the bad), Apple will get crushed along with the rest of the growth stocks. Unfortunately, the consensus is that rates will certainly increase over the next 12-24 months. That said, the short-term is up in the air. So keep this chart on your radar.</p>\n<p><b>Introduction</b></p>\n<p>We primarily trade an income strategy that we call the Triple Income Wheel, which starts with writing cash-secured puts on high-quality stocks that you would like to own at a lower price. In addition, the company's valuation feels full at current levels.</p>\n<p><b>Short-Term Thesis (Strike Zone, EPS Risk, Technical Support)</b></p>\n<p>From a short-term perspective (especially as it is related to selling cash-secured puts), estimating a good \"strike zone\" is key to our analysis. Our strike zone takes into account (1) the stock's volatility, (2) recent performance (i.e., how much has it already pulled back from its recent highs), (3) near-term EPS risk, and (4) the overall volatility of the market (i.e., VIX level).</p>\n<p>As shown in the table below, our strike zone for Apple is currently $119.00-$133.00, representing a required minimum margin of safety of 8.5%.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7ac7007040b92ed0d32a8eb27c8620c3\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"164\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>As discussed in the safety ranking analysis above, Apple ranks positively on a relative basis for Volatility/Risk (rating of 8). In return for this premium, we agree (and are obligated) to buy 100 shares of AAPL stock for each contract sold at the strike price of $135.00.</p>\n<p>If the stock stays above $135.00 between now and expiration (8/20/21), the option expires worthless and we keep the premium of $1.92.</p>\n<p>However,<i>the downside of this trade comes into play if the stock closes below $135.00 on expiration (8/20/21). Since we are obligated to buy the stock at $135.00, we would have a potential unrealized capital loss on our hands (depending on how low the stock closed on expiration)</i>. Both were up 0.9% over last month, the biggest jump since 2008.</p>\n<p>Here’s what analysts had to say about the report, and what it means going forward.</p>\n<p><b>Good news and bad news</b></p>\n<p>A big question surrounding inflation recently is whether it’s transitory or more likely to become more sustained. (“An episode of one-time price increases as the economy reopens is not likely to lead to persistent year-over-year inflation into the future,” Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said in April.)</p>\n<p>Bank of America's economics team pointed out that its \"meter\" recently showed historic temporary inflation.</p>\n<p>“The bad news is that we are still not out of the woods, as core CPI and core PCE % year-over-year inflation are likely to remain elevated through year-end and into early 2022,” the bank’s Alexander Lin wrote in a note to clients. “The good news is that we are likely near the peak, at least for the next few months, as base effects are less favorable and shortage pressures rotate away from goods towards services.”</p>\n<p>Furthermore, Lin continued, “There is even risk that transitory inflation turns into transitory disinflation.” If that happened, it could change the Fed’s position.</p>\n<p>The supply and demand shocks have been unlike anything in recent memory, with the pandemic leading to shortages and demand shocks and then reopening causing a demand whiplash. The pendulum could swing the other way.</p>\n<p>“A big question for goods and commodities inflation once the shortages and bottlenecks ease is whether there will be a leveling off in prices or a negative payback,” Lin wrote. “Thus, transitory disinflation could be substantial next year. This could create a new challenge for Fed communication and the hiking timeline.”</p>\n<p><b>More broad-based than usual</b></p>\n<p>Expectations going into the inflation numbers focused on energy costs, which has an outsize impact on the CPI number.</p>\n<p>In a preview note, DataTrek’s Nicholas Colas pointed out that gas price inflation played a big role, making up 40% of June’s headline (total, unadjusted for gas and food) inflation.</p>\n<p>Gas played a big role in inflation, but as Peter Essele, Head of Investment Management for Commonwealth Financial Network, wrote, inflation was felt across the board in many areas.</p>\n<p>“It appears the June increase was more broad-based in nature with spillover into the core components of CPI, notably the services component. Shelter, for instance, which makes up roughly one-third of headline CPI is slowly marching higher, with June’s print showing an increase 2.6% year-over-year,” he wrote. “Used cars and trucks prices have increased 45% over the last year, which signals the largest move ever.”</p>\n<p><b>Still no answers as to what’s permanent</b></p>\n<p>Analysts were surprised by higher-than-expected total and core CPI metrics. But the numbers did little to clarify the biggest question: how permanent is any of this?</p>\n<p>In a note to clients, TD Securities analysts said they thought the inflation increases in travel and used vehicles meant that the inflation was \"largely\" transitory. The big issue it saw was in rents reaccelerating up after a slowdown last year, which would point to something more permanent.</p>\n<p>\"As we illustrated once again in our latest US CPI Scanner, some private sector data tracking rents show much more strengthening than the CPI data in recent months, but the same data showed much more weakening in 2020,” analysts wrote.</p>\n<p>Frustratingly for those who want more certainty, this could still be transitory, however.</p>\n<p>“Some of the strengthening in rents could also be transitory to the extent the boost from reopening is at its peak now,” the note said.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d3582073f113b6736eb2de8224fd02d8\" tg-width=\"705\" tg-height=\"470\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - JUNE 10: A customer shops for meat at a supermarket on June 10, 2021 in Chicago, Illinois. Will it maintain its easy money policies meant to boost the economy through the pandemic?</p>\n<p>Bank of America's Lin said the bank doesn't \"believe this report changes much for the Fed.” The reason, echoed by TD Securities analysts, is because these price increases seem to be largely transitory, at least with the data we have now. And if this period is indeed almost over, transitory deflation or some opposite pendulum swing is something the Fed might not want to make worse.</p>\n<p>Still, the latest data makes it harder for this “wait and see” to continue, ING’s James Knightley wrote.</p>\n<p>“Yet another blowout inflation reading makes it increasingly difficult for the Fed to stick to its position that elevated inflation readings are merely ‘transitory,’” Knightley wrote. The stock opened at $64.50, and currently trades in the high $80s -- which gives it a market capitalization of nearly $50 billion. FY = fiscal year.</p>\n<h2>But is Roblox a fad or a new content platform?</h2>\n<p>However, there are some key differences between Roblox and Unity.</p>\n<p>Roblox is a platform that enables younger users, many of whom don't have any coding experience, to build simple block-based games and share them with other players. Unity is an advanced game development engine that powers over half of the world's mobile, PC, and console games.</p>\n<p>Roblox encourages users to monetize their games with an in-app currency called Robux within its walled garden. Unity offers developers more flexible tools for integrating in-app ads, in-app purchases, and other features into their games.</p>\n<p>The bulls claim Roblox's self-sustaining cycle of content creation, self-promotion, and monetization will fuel its long-term growth. The bears will point out that half of the platform's daily active users (DAUs) are under the age of 13, and they might eventually grow out of Roblox's simple experiences or graduate to a more advanced game development engine like Unity.</p>\n<p>The bulls will point to Roblox's growth rates. Between the first quarters of 2018 and 2021, Roblox's DAUs more than quadrupled from 10.3 million to 42.1 million, its total hours engaged surged from 2.1 billion to 9.7 billion, and its average bookings per DAU jumped from $11.62 to $15.48.</p>\n<p>Roblox's revenue rose 56% in 2019, soared 82% in 2020, and analysts expect 167% growth this year. But next year, they expect its revenue to rise just 26% after the pandemic ends and more students return to school.</p>\n<p>The bears will point out Roblox isn't profitable, and it probably can't achieve profitability without reducing its exchange rate between U.S. dollars and Robux for developers. However, doing so could alienate its developers and throttle the platform's output of new content.</p>\n<h2>Why Roblox probably can't hit $1 trillion by 2030</h2>\n<p>Even if Roblox maintains a premium price-to-sales ratio of 20 through 2030, it would need to generate $50 billion in annual sales to hit the $1 trillion mark. Roblox generated just $933 million in revenues in 2020, so it would need to generate a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of nearly 50% to hit $50 billion by 2030.</p>\n<p>If Roblox's valuations cool off, as they'll likely do over the years, it will need to generate an ever higher CAGR to become a $1 trillion company. By comparison, Amazon grew its revenues at a CAGR of 27.4% over the past decade -- and it currently trades at just four times this year's sales. Therefore, it seems highly unlikely Roblox will become a $1 trillion company within the next decade.</p>\n<p>But that doesn't mean Roblox won't generate multibagger gains over the next decade. It could remain popular long after the pandemic passes, attract a new generation of younger users, and launch more powerful tools for advanced users. As it continues to expand, economies of scale should kick in and strengthen its earnings growth.
