The company has scaled out its electric vehicle business, sports a market cap north of $1 trillion, and CEO Elon Musk is now the richest man in the world. Everything has come up in favor of Tesla recently. But for owners of the stock, the future does not look nearly as bright.

Here's why Tesla is the one stock I'd avoid in 2022.

Growth has been solid

Let's start with what Tesla has done with its business over the last five years. It recently posted record car deliveries of 936,000 in 2021, up from a measly 30,000 in 2017. Revenue has followed suit. Trailing 12-month sales are up 448% in the last five years, as Tesla has scaled its manufacturing business around the globe. What's more, it has recently started to generate steady profits, putting up $4.45 billion in operating income over the last 12 months.

The company should do over $50 billion in sales in 2021, and analysts expect revenue to get close to $100 billion in 2023. So why is Tesla stock one to avoid in 2022? Two reasons: the difficulty of manufacturing and the expectations embedded in the stock.

Manufacturing is a difficult business

Bending steel is difficult. Building and selling cars is difficult, and it costs a lot of money. Tesla (a car manufacturer) is not immune to these costs, and they will make it difficult for the company to return cash to shareholders over the long term -- which is how you accrue value as an owner of the stock. For example, over the last 12 months, Tesla has spent $7.3 billion on capital expenditures, which is only slightly lower than the $9.9 billion it generated in cash flow from operations.

These numbers come out to a free cash flow of only $2.6 billion over the past 12 months. At a market cap of $1.05 trillion, that is a price-to-free-cash-flow (P/FCF) over 400. Even worse, Tesla has only generated this "free cash flow" because it has grown its accounts payable and accrued liabilities by $2.7 billion this year. This is money Tesla will have to pay to suppliers and employees eventually, making the $2.6 billion in cash it generated unavailable to return to shareholders.

You might ask: Won't capex decrease once Tesla is done expanding its business? This is not likely. Toyota (NYSE:TM), the largest car manufacturer in the world, spent almost $35 billion on capital expenditures over the last 12 months, and it is growing capacity at a much slower rate than Tesla. If Tesla starts delivering more than 10 million vehicles a year (as Toyota did in 2019), it will have a perpetual need for capital investment, which will limit the amount of true free cash flow available to pay out to shareholders.

Expectations are much too high

Given the difficult nature of an automotive manufacturing business, most of the sector's stocks trade at dirt-cheap earnings multiples. This will likely be true of Tesla at some point. Let's look at Toyota again as an example. The company, which did $281 billion in revenue over the past 12 months, generated $28.2 billion in net income. It has a market cap of $289 billion, or right around a price-to-earnings ratio of 10. It is so low because investors in the company understand that it will be difficult for excess cash to be paid out to them relative to its earning power.

On the other hand, Tesla sports a market cap of $1.056 trillion and has a trailing net income of $3.47 billion. Could Tesla get to $28.2 billion in annual net income someday? Maybe. But as investors, you should understand that with a market cap more than three times the size of Toyota's, this is already priced into the stock.

If you own Tesla right now, you should have a thesis on why it will be worth more than $1 trillion in the future, and likely $2 trillion a decade from now if you desire a decent compounded annual return. You might argue that Tesla is setting itself up to do that with autonomous driving, battery technology, and solar panels. However, these are all either small and capital-intensive businesses (solar and batteries) or speculative business plans with no line of sight to becoming commercially viable (autonomous driving). Will these segments help Tesla achieve positive returns over the next decade when it already has a market cap pricing in the dominance of the majority of the automotive sector?

Tesla's market cap is much too high relative to the opportunity set in front of it and its current financial profile. For that reason, it is the one stock I'd avoid buying in 2022.

","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Why Tesla Is the One Stock I'd Avoid in 2022
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nWhy Tesla Is the One Stock I'd Avoid in 2022\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-01-20 08:18 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Tesla's (NASDAQ:TSLA) stock performance over the last decade has been nothing short of exceptional. But the guide was even more out of this world, showing analysts they're way off base in their models. This is causing the bears to move from one argument to another as each gets debunked through raw financial numbers. But now they're walking into a crypto debate where the bulls have more transparency and data on their side than any other time. Unfortunately, the crypto bear thesis is not the one to take this time around. Gaming revenue growth will not slow as there's a huge RTX 3000 series opportunity with less than 4% of the GPU market share, just as supply receives a much-needed reprieve with crypto migrating to a new SKU altogether. The market appreciates the mitigated risk with crypto revenue transparency, allowing the stock to sustain a premium valuation.
\n
Paper Launch, Remember?
\n
At first, the bears postulated the RTX 3000 series debut was a paper launch because there was such limited supply. Gamers across the internet were up in arms because so few cards could be bought, sold out everywhere. Limited supply has continued to plague the 3000 series since then.
\n
But Gaming revenue has gone from $1.65B before the RTX 3000 launch to $2.76B in the latest quarter, causing this bear talking point to fade over the last several months.
\n
If the 3000 cards were so limited in supply, what accounts for the consistent monstrous quarter-over-quarter growth in the Gaming division?
\n
Ah, I'm glad you asked.
\n
It's clearly the selling of more than just a few (paper) RTX 3000 cards.
\n
Crypto Is The Talking Point, Again
\n
That question brings us to the latest bear talking point - crypto. If the bears move to this point, they have given up on the paper launch argument. That's because to mine crypto, you need a powerful GPU, and that powerful GPU is an RTX 3000 series card. So either there are very few 3000 series being sold (paper launch) - which doesn't allow a crypto bubble to be an issue - or there are indeed enough 3000 cards to meaningfully show up on the top line and debate how much is due to crypto-related sales.
\n
But the crypto debate is much harder to prove for either side. Historically it has been a bit of a closed box in terms of what cards have been sold to crypto miners and which ones have gotten into \"real\" gamers' hands. The bears can point to this and say that whatever RTX 3000 series cards have been sold over the last several months were for crypto mining.
\n
And you might be wondering, \"Why is this a big deal? Revenue is revenue, regardless of who's buying the card.\"
\n
This might be true if it wasn't for the volatile nature of the cryptocurrency world. Mining crypto is a profitability equation of how high the hash rate of a processor is (how fast it can complete the crypto calculations on the blockchain to receive a reward) and how much that particular crypto is worth on the market. The higher the crypto price, the higher the incentive to mine (the reward is bigger in pure dollar terms).
\n
But in 2018, after the \"crypto bubble\" deflated when the price of Bitcoin (BTC-USD) and Ethereum (ETH-USD) plummeted 85% from then all-time highs, Nvidia's revenue took a hit. Suddenly the cards of 2018 were not profitable to mine at depressed prices. It appeared a lot of the Gaming division sales were tied to crypto, or at least enough to knock growth off-kilter. As a result, the company experienced negative top-line growth throughout the following year.
\n
This is why the word crypto spoken by management, along with the crypto volatility with Bitcoin and Ethereum 50% off the latest all-time highs, brings a shiver down the market's spine.
\n
It sees 2018 playing out all over again.
\n
Facing The Crypto Thesis Head On
\n
However, bulls have more data over the last two quarters than they did in the 2018 crypt bust, with the strongest talking point to date coming just a few weeks ago. That point is the new RTX 3000 SKUs which will physically limit the hash rate of the cards, deterring miners from buying cards and opening up supply to gamers for typical GPU use.
\n
But if crypto is a major part of Gaming division revenue and the company is going to hardware limit the hash rates to make them unprofitable to mine crypto, future Gaming revenue will undoubtedly suffer.
\n
Right?
\n
Apparently not; guidance isn't telling us that story. With the current quarter running from May through July and the new \"hash lite\" RTX cards shipping at the end of May, guidance was still $6.3B in revenue versus The Street consensus of $5.48B.
\n
The hidden gem in the guide was the additional data bulls have needed for some time: a breakdown of revenue from CMPs (crypto mining processors). The company created CMPs to serve the industrial crypto mining community to provide better performance (by focusing processing power specifically on hashing and removing graphic rendering capabilities) and separate the supply between miners and gamers. This works to benefit investors as this breakdown of revenue allows for better risk analysis of overall revenue.
\n
And that is the key to the crypto cycle this time around.
\n
The guide for FQ2 included $400M of revenue for CMP products (as shown under the OEM/Other category). You might see this as a huge risk (relative to overall revenue), but this has now made the risk a solid number. Before this CMP breakdown, the market and analysts had to rely on rough estimates based in wide ranges to understand how much the Gaming division had downside risk built into it due to crypto.
\n
Why has the market responded positively to the expected 158% quarter-over-quarter growth, which follows 114% sequential growth in the just reported quarter for CMP? Because the market can assess the risk to the downside now - uncertainty has been mitigated.
\n
Data byYCharts
\n
The market knows $400M is the mark now. The rest of the divisions are more understood, and channel checks are more accurate there. The question mark has been crypto, and the company is now being the most transparent about it.
\n
Outlook For Gaming
\n
This then begs the question: how much will be cannibalized from the Gaming division?
\n
Not much if we continue doing the math on the FQ2 guide. After backing out the $400M of CMP sales, we're left with a guide of $5.9B. That's still $420M of outperformance analysts didn't account for, while the Gaming division will technically see two \"hits\" to its growth, each for the same reason. Not only is there a separate product line for crypto, but the RTX cards will also have their inherent mining performance throttled. This should provide no reason to continue using RTX cards as the best value for mining (relatively cheap compared to ASICs with still profitable processing power).
\n
Of course, not all of the $420M guidance raise is for Gaming. Still, considering it's the largest division with 48% of revenue in the last quarter, it stands that analysts will meaningfully raise estimates for the Gaming division.
\n
But then, where's the Gaming growth coming from in the quarters ahead?
\n
Gamers will be the clear demand driver now. Supply should now make its way toward the gamers who have been trying to get a 3000 series card for the last eight months. You don't have to Google very much to find folks still patiently - and impatiently - waiting for their 3000 series card.
\n
There's a huge runway for upgrades from prior RTX cards and GTX cards as the market penetration of RTX 30XX cards is still less than 4%, around 3.64%, according to Steam's monthly hardware survey. And that's growing each month since January across the SKU board. This compares to the current gamer market share of all other Nvidia cards of 68.6%.
\n
(Source:Steam Hardware Survey)
\n
And if you're concerned about the lack of upgrades from RTX 20XX cards since they're only one generation behind, the non-RTX portion of the market makes up 55.11%. So there's a huge greenfield for upgrades to the 3000 series ahead with supply opening up to the real gamers.
\n
Outperformance To Continue
\n
Management has been tackling the market's concerns head-on, contrary to 2018. It has been able to capitalize on a strained crypto market because its GPU-based CMP processors are above and beyond anything anyone has ever produced. This time it did it correctly with much better transparency - the market appreciates the calculated risk.
\n
There's still further bullishness as Nvidia enters a crypto market dominated by ASICs, which tend to have very limited supply and very long lead times. Nvidia is capitalizing on the market using its larger contract position with fabs like Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM) and Samsung (OTC:SSNLF)(OTC:SSNNF) to produce competitive mining processors.
\n
Eventually, the transition of Ethereum (ETH-USD) to proof-of-stake from proof-of-work may serve as a headwind rather than a tailwind. The market appreciates the mitigated risk with crypto revenue transparency, allowing the stock to sustain a premium valuation.\nPaper Launch, Remember?\nAt first, the bears postulated the RTX 3000 series debut was a paper launch because there was such limited supply. Gamers across the internet were up in arms because so few cards could be bought, sold out everywhere. Limited supply has continued to plague the 3000 series since then.\nBut Gaming revenue has gone from $1.65B before the RTX 3000 launch to $2.76B in the latest quarter, causing this bear talking point to fade over the last several months.\nIf the 3000 cards were so limited in supply, what accounts for the consistent monstrous quarter-over-quarter growth in the Gaming division?\nAh, I'm glad you asked.\nIt's clearly the selling of more than just a few (paper) RTX 3000 cards.\nCrypto Is The Talking Point, Again\nThat question brings us to the latest bear talking point - crypto. If the bears move to this point, they have given up on the paper launch argument. That's because to mine crypto, you need a powerful GPU, and that powerful GPU is an RTX 3000 series card. So either there are very few 3000 series being sold (paper launch) - which doesn't allow a crypto bubble to be an issue - or there are indeed enough 3000 cards to meaningfully show up on the top line and debate how much is due to crypto-related sales.\nBut the crypto debate is much harder to prove for either side. Historically it has been a bit of a closed box in terms of what cards have been sold to crypto miners and which ones have gotten into \"real\" gamers' hands. The bears can point to this and say that whatever RTX 3000 series cards have been sold over the last several months were for crypto mining.\nAnd you might be wondering, \"Why is this a big deal? Revenue is revenue, regardless of who's buying the card.\"\nThis might be true if it wasn't for the volatile nature of the cryptocurrency world. Mining crypto is a profitability equation of how high the hash rate of a processor is (how fast it can complete the crypto calculations on the blockchain to receive a reward) and how much that particular crypto is worth on the market. The higher the crypto price, the higher the incentive to mine (the reward is bigger in pure dollar terms).\nBut in 2018, after the \"crypto bubble\" deflated when the price of Bitcoin (BTC-USD) and Ethereum (ETH-USD) plummeted 85% from then all-time highs, Nvidia's revenue took a hit. Suddenly the cards of 2018 were not profitable to mine at depressed prices. It appeared a lot of the Gaming division sales were tied to crypto, or at least enough to knock growth off-kilter. As a result, the company experienced negative top-line growth throughout the following year.\nThis is why the word crypto spoken by management, along with the crypto volatility with Bitcoin and Ethereum 50% off the latest all-time highs, brings a shiver down the market's spine.\nIt sees 2018 playing out all over again.\nFacing The Crypto Thesis Head On\nHowever, bulls have more data over the last two quarters than they did in the 2018 crypt bust, with the strongest talking point to date coming just a few weeks ago. That point is the new RTX 3000 SKUs which will physically limit the hash rate of the cards, deterring miners from buying cards and opening up supply to gamers for typical GPU use.\nBut if crypto is a major part of Gaming division revenue and the company is going to hardware limit the hash rates to make them unprofitable to mine crypto, future Gaming revenue will undoubtedly suffer.\nRight?\nApparently not; guidance isn't telling us that story. With the current quarter running from May through July and theĀ new \"hash lite\" RTX cards shipping at the end of May, guidance was still $6.3B in revenue versus The Street consensus of $5.48B.\nThe hidden gem in the guide was the additional data bulls have needed for some time: a breakdown of revenue from CMPs (crypto mining processors). The company created CMPs to serve the industrial crypto mining community to provide better performance (by focusing processing power specifically on hashing and removing graphic rendering capabilities) and separate the supply between miners and gamers. This works to benefit investors as this breakdown of revenue allows for better risk analysis of overall revenue.\nAnd that is the key to the crypto cycle this time around.\nTheĀ guide for FQ2 included $400M of revenue for CMP productsĀ (as shown under the OEM/Other category). You might see this as a huge risk (relative to overall revenue), but this has now made the risk a solid number. Before this CMP breakdown, the market and analysts had to rely on rough estimates based in wide ranges to understand how much the Gaming division had downside risk built into it due to crypto.\nWhy has the market responded positively to the expected 158% quarter-over-quarter growth, which follows 114% sequential growth in the just reported quarter for CMP? Because the market can assess the risk to the downside now - uncertainty has been mitigated.\nData byYCharts\nThe market knows $400M is the mark now. The rest of the divisions are more understood, and channel checks are more accurate there. The question mark has been crypto, and the company is now being the most transparent about it.\nOutlook For Gaming\nThis then begs the question: how much will be cannibalized from the Gaming division?\nNot much if we continue doing the math on the FQ2 guide. This should provide no reason to continue using RTX cards as the best value for mining (relatively cheap compared to ASICs with still profitable processing power).\nOf course, not all of the $420M guidance raise is for Gaming. Still, considering it's the largest division with 48% of revenue in the last quarter, it stands that analysts will meaningfully raise estimates for the Gaming division.\nBut then, where's the Gaming growth coming from in the quarters ahead?\nGamers will be the clear demand driver now. Supply should now make its way toward the gamers who have been trying to get a 3000 series card for the last eight months. You don't have to Google very much to find folks still patiently - and impatiently - waiting for their 3000 series card.\nThere's a huge runway for upgrades from prior RTX cards and GTX cards as the market penetration of RTX 30XX cards is still less than 4%, around 3.64%, according to Steam's monthly hardware survey. And that's growing each month since January across the SKU board. This compares to the current gamer market share of all other Nvidia cards of 68.6%.\n(Source:Steam Hardware Survey)\nAnd if you're concerned about the lack of upgrades from RTX 20XX cards since they're only one generation behind, the non-RTX portion of the market makes up 55.11%. So there's a huge greenfield for upgrades to the 3000 series ahead with supply opening up to the real gamers.\nOutperformance To Continue\nManagement has been tackling the market's concerns head-on, contrary to 2018. It has been able to capitalize on a strained crypto market because its GPU-based CMP processors are above and beyond anything anyone has ever produced. This time it did it correctly with much better transparency - the market appreciates the calculated risk.\nThere's still further bullishness as Nvidia enters a crypto market dominated by ASICs, which tend to have very limited supply and very long lead times. Nvidia is capitalizing on the market using its larger contract position with fabs like Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM) and Samsung (OTC:SSNLF)(OTC:SSNNF) to produce competitive mining processors.\nEventually, the transition of Ethereum (ETH-USD) to proof-of-stake from proof-of-work may serve as a headwind rather than a tailwind. Still, this risk is much further out as not only will the transition start in early 2022, but miners are expected to remain on the networkĀ for at least a year after the transition.\nIt comes down to this: if the market has the data it needs to calculate the at-risk revenue easily, the market won't be as skittish to value Nvidia at the multiples it has grown to. Add in the huge upside to revenue for FQ2 with gamers now able to dive into the consumer market more fully, and you have a continuation for the Gaming division to outperform through at least year-end, if not well into 2022. For a long-term shareholder, there are further returns ahead for the stock.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":378,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":184261385,"gmtCreate":1623716167547,"gmtModify":1704209267654,"author":{"id":"3561799921489676","authorId":"3561799921489676","name":"Hangry","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ad025b87748517512879dc0a56ddd144","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3561799921489676","authorIdStr":"3561799921489676"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Nice","listText":"Nice","text":"Nice","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/184261385","repostId":"2143735257","repostType":2,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":163,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":184285521,"gmtCreate":1623716039063,"gmtModify":1704209259344,"author":{"id":"3561799921489676","authorId":"3561799921489676","name":"Hangry","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ad025b87748517512879dc0a56ddd144","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3561799921489676","authorIdStr":"3561799921489676"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Wow","listText":"Wow","text":"Wow","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/184285521","repostId":"2143735257","repostType":2,"repost":{"id":"2143735257","pubTimestamp":1623715058,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2143735257?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-06-15 07:57","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Here are the biggest short squeezes in the stock market, including Virgin Galactic and AMC Networks","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2143735257","media":"MarketWatch","summary":"Hedge fund short-sellers seem to have learned their lesson from early 2021.\nVirgin Galactic's Unity ","content":"
Hedge fund short-sellers seem to have learned their lesson from early 2021.
\n
Virgin Galactic's Unity shuttle flies over White Sands National Park in New Mexico in May. (Virgin Galactic)
\n
Professional short-sellers have changed their ways this year. They have limited their exposure to risk after taking heavy losses earlier in 2021 as traders using Reddit's WallStreetBets channel and other social media bid up prices of stocks the pros had bet against.
\n
But there are still stocks with heavy short interest that have been bid up recently. Below is a new list using the same criteria we used to pull this list of heavily shorted stocks during the Reddit/Robinhood mania in late January.
\n
Short-selling
\n
First, a quick review of terms:
\n
\n
Short-selling is when an investor borrows shares and immediately sells them, hoping to buy them back later at a lower price, return them to the lender and pocket the difference.
\n
Covering is when a person with a short position buys the shares to return them to the lender, to profit if the shares have gone down in price since they were shorted, or to limit losses if they went up after being shorted.
\n
A short squeeze is when a mass of investors looking to cover short positions start buying at the same time. The buying pushes the share price higher, making short investors accelerate their attempts to cover, which sends the shares spiraling higher in a frenzy. This is what happened earlier this year when traders as a group decided to take on professional sellers by buying a lot of shares of heavily shorted stocks, including, most famously, GameStop Corp. and AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc.
\n
\n
Biggest short squeezes
\n
Late in January, we listed heavily shorted stocks that had shot up the most that month. We began with the components of the Russell 3000 Index , then identified the 65 stocks with at least 25% short interest. Among those, GameStop had the biggest year-to-date gain through Jan. 27 -- an astounding 1,745%.
\n
So now we have used the same method. According to FactSet's most current data, there were only 20 stocks among the Russell 3000 whose shares available for trading were at least 25% sold short as of June 11. Here they are, sorted by how much the shares had appreciated for four weeks (from May 14) through June 11:
\n

\n
The biggest short squeeze in the Russell 3000 appears to be Virgin Galactic Holdings Inc. $(SPCE)$, which more than doubled in four weeks and was 27.82% sold short on June 11. The company's shares have soared since the successful test .\" The company expects to begin testing for commercial passenger flights next year.
\n
Workhorse Group Inc. $(WKHS)$ is the most heavily shorted stock on the list, with 40.32% short interest, and its shares have nearly doubled in four weeks. The electric-vehicle maker produced 38 of its C-Series trucks during the first quarter and delivered six to customers to a hold from a buy on June 4.
\n
AMC Networks Inc. $(AMCX)$ ranks fourth on the list, with a 32% gain in four weeks and 25.58% short interest. As readers have pointed out, this is a different company from the \"AMC\" we that has been one of the most heavily covered meme stocks: AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. $(AMC)$, which along with GameStop and Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. $(BBBY)$ was among eight meme stocks profiled last week.
\n
A changed market
\n
Getting back to that 40.38% short interest for Workhorse, Brad Lamensdorf, who co-manages the AdvisorShares Ranger Equity Bear ETF (HDGE) -- which is meant to be used as a hedging tool -- said in January that a percentage of short-sales to total shares available for trading of \"over 30% to 40% is outrageously high.\"
\n
There are now only nine stocks among the Russell 3000 shorted more than 30%. During a follow-up interview on June 14, Lamensdorf said hedge fund managers were reducing their use use of leverage to take short positions.
\n
\"They don't need as many shorts. (Virgin Galactic)\nProfessional short-sellers have changed their ways this year. They have limited their exposure to risk after taking heavy losses earlier in 2021 as traders using Reddit's WallStreetBets channel and other social media bid up prices of stocks the pros had bet against.\nBut there are still stocks with heavy short interest that have been bid up recently. Below is a new list using the same criteria we used to pull this list of heavily shorted stocks during the Reddit/Robinhood mania in late January.\nShort-selling\nFirst, a quick review of terms:\n\nShort-selling is when an investor borrows shares and immediately sells them, hoping to buy them back later at a lower price, return them to the lender and pocket the difference.\nCovering is when a person with a short position buys the shares to return them to the lender, to profit if the shares have gone down in price since they were shorted, or to limit losses if they went up after being shorted.\nA short squeeze is when a mass of investors looking to cover short positions start buying at the same time. The buying pushes the share price higher, making short investors accelerate their attempts to cover, which sends the shares spiraling higher in a frenzy. This is what happened earlier this year when traders as a group decided to take on professional sellers by buying a lot of shares of heavily shorted stocks, including, most famously, GameStop Corp.Ā and AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc.\n\nBiggest short squeezes\nLate in January, we listed heavily shorted stocks that had shot up the most that month. We began with the components of the Russell 3000 Index , then identified the 65 stocks with at least 25% short interest. Among those, GameStop had the biggest year-to-date gain through Jan. 27 -- an astounding 1,745%.\nSo now we have used the same method. According to FactSet's most current data, there were only 20 stocks among the Russell 3000 whose shares available for trading were at least 25% sold short as of June 11. Here they are, sorted by how much the shares had appreciated for four weeks (from May 14) through June 11:\n\nThe biggest short squeeze in the Russell 3000 appears to be Virgin Galactic Holdings Inc. $(SPCE)$, which more than doubled in four weeks and was 27.82% sold short on June 11. The company's shares have soared since the successful test .\" The company expects to begin testing for commercial passenger flights next year.\nWorkhorse Group Inc. $(WKHS)$ is the most heavily shorted stock on the list, with 40.32% short interest, and its shares have nearly doubled in four weeks. The electric-vehicle maker produced 38 of its C-Series trucks during the first quarter and delivered six to customers to a hold from a buy on June 4.\nAMC Networks Inc. $(BBBY)$ was among eight meme stocks profiled last week.\nA changed market\nGetting back to that 40.38% short interest for Workhorse, Brad Lamensdorf, who co-manages the AdvisorShares Ranger Equity Bear ETF (HDGE) -- which is meant to be used as a hedging tool -- said in January that a percentage of short-sales to total shares available for trading of \"over 30% to 40% is outrageously high.\"\nThere are now only nine stocks among the Russell 3000 shorted more than 30%. During a follow-up interview on June 14, Lamensdorf said hedge fund managers were reducing their use use of leverage to take short positions.\n\"They don't need as many shorts. They think in this environment shorting isn't helping them hedge risk -- it is actually creating more risk,\" he said.\nLamensdorf went on to say that anecdotally, hedge fund managers have been using \"complete buy stops,\" to automatically cover short positions more quickly than they used to.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":142,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":371325178,"gmtCreate":1618913679594,"gmtModify":1704716768521,"author":{"id":"3561799921489676","authorId":"3561799921489676","name":"Hangry","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ad025b87748517512879dc0a56ddd144","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3561799921489676","authorIdStr":"3561799921489676"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Why are ppl panicking ? Thatās a problem for the entire EV sector.

Tesla shares closed down 8.6% Monday at $714.50 a share. That leaves them down almost $186 from the 52-week high of $900.40 they reached in January. Thatās a drop of roughly 21%.

It seems odd to say, given that the term is usually applied to broad groups of stocks, but there is a new bear marketāa drop of 20% from a highāin Tesla shares.

Of course, Tesla is the 800-pound gorilla in the EV sector. It is worth almost as much as all other traditional car makers combined. And when Tesla stock drops, other EV stocks follow because Wall Street often relies on Teslaās valuation to come up with price targets.

Monday, shares of three other high-flying EV stocks with significant salesāNIO(NIO),XPeng(XPEV) andLi Auto(LI)āfell roughly 7% to 8%. And since Tesla stock hit its all-time high, NIO, XPeng and Li Auto shares are down roughly 20% on average, just like Tesla.

It looks as if Tesla is the benchmark for EV stocks just like the S&P 500 is the basis for comparison for U.S. stocks. That raises an interesting idea for EV investors: the Tesla version of beta. The beta concept can be thought of, in a sense, as a measure of a stockās systemic risk. What happens to a market is linked to what happens to an individual stock by that stockās beta.

If a stock, for instance, has a beta of 2, it would be expected to rise about 2% if the market rose 1%. Beta values arenāt always above 1. Gold-mining companies in theS&P 500,for instance, have a beta of roughly 0.5, so they donāt rise as fast if the broader index goes up.

Investors can interpret the gold beta as saying roughly half of what happens to those golds stock is explained by what happens to the S&P 500, and the other half is due to other factors, such as whatās going on with gold prices.

Beta is just a mathematical calculation. Investors, if they want, can calculate a stockās beta relative to atmospheric pressure in Central Park. The math has to mean something, though, so no one does that. In the case of EVs, however, the idea of Tesla-as-risk to any EV stock doesnāt feel like a stretch.

The āTesla betaā of the three Chinese EV stocksāNIO, XPeng and Liāis about 0.5. That can be interpreted, as with gold stocks, as saying about half of what happens to those three shares is a function of what happens to Tesla stock.

Itās an interesting idea. But what is happening to Tesla stock anyway?

Itās all about the potential for higher inflation. Increasing inflation, a growing concern in the market, tends to punish high-growth stocks more than low-growth stocks because of the way financial discount rates work. Most of Teslaās cash flow comes in future years, and future cash flow is worth less today when interest rates rise.

Monday, many growth stocks took it on the chin. The Nasdaq Composite, known as the home of many fast-growing tech companies, fell 2.5%. Teslaās beta value relative to the Nasdaq is about 2, so investors shouldnāt be surprised by a 5% drop in Tesla stock.

Tesla shares fell 9%, though. The extra 4% remains a mystery. The news site Electrek reported Tesla stopped taking orders for its lowest-priced Model Y, but high demand for lower-price EV models isnāt really a bad thing.

CEO Elon Musk is also spending a lot of time tweeting about cryptocurrencies. That might be unnerving Tesla investors. His tweeting, however, isnāt really any different than recent history. Musk is famous for his tweeting on lots of topics.
","source":"lsy1601382232898","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Tesla Stock Is in a Bear Market. Thatās a drop of roughly 21%.It seems odd to say, given that the term is usually applied to broad groups of stocks, but there is a new bear marketāa drop of 20% from a highāin Tesla shares.Of course, Tesla is theĀ 800-pound gorillaĀ in the EV sector. It is worth almost as much as all other traditional car makers combined. And when Tesla stock drops, other EV stocks follow because Wall Street often relies on Teslaās valuation to come up with price targets.Monday, shares of three otherĀ high-flyingĀ EV stocks with significant salesāNIO(NIO),XPeng(XPEV) andLi Auto(LI)āfell roughly 7% to 8%. And since Tesla stock hit its all-time high, NIO, XPeng andĀ Li AutoĀ shares are down roughly 20% on average, just like Tesla. It looks as if Tesla is the benchmark for EV stocks just like theĀ S&P 500Ā is the basis for comparison for U.S. stocks. That raises an interesting idea for EV investors: the Tesla version of beta. The beta concept can be thought of, in a sense, as a measure of a stockās systemic risk. What happens to a market is linked to what happens to an individual stock by that stockās beta.If a stock, for instance, has a beta of 2, it would be expected to rise about 2% if the market rose 1%. Beta values arenāt always above 1. Gold-mining companies in theS&P 500,for instance, have a beta of roughly 0.5, so they donāt rise as fast if the broader index goes up.Investors can interpret the gold beta as saying roughly half of what happens to those golds stock is explained by what happens to the S&P 500, and the other half is due to other factors, such as whatās going on with gold prices.Beta is just a mathematical calculation. That can be interpreted, as with gold stocks, as saying about half of what happens to those three shares is a function of what happens to Tesla stock.Itās an interesting idea. But what is happening to Tesla stock anyway?Itās all about the potential for higher inflation. Increasing inflation, a growing concern in the market, tends to punish high-growth stocks more than low-growth stocks because of the way financial discount rates work. Most of Teslaās cash flow comes in future years, and future cash flow is worth less today when interest rates rise.Monday, many growth stocks took it on the chin. TheĀ Nasdaq Composite, known as the home of many fast-growing tech companies, fell 2.5%. Teslaās beta value relative to the Nasdaq is about 2, so investors shouldnāt be surprised by a 5% drop in Tesla stock.Tesla shares fell 9%, though. The extra 4% remains a mystery. The news siteĀ ElectrekĀ reported Tesla stopped taking orders for its lowest-priced Model Y, but high demand for lower-price EV models isnāt really a bad thing.CEOĀ Elon MuskĀ is also spending a lot of time tweeting aboutĀ cryptocurrencies. That might be unnerving Tesla investors. His tweeting, however, isnāt really any different than recent history. Musk is famous for his tweeting on lots of topics.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":148,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":175548847,"gmtCreate":1627044122289,"gmtModify":1703483098008,"author":{"id":"3561799921489676","authorId":"3561799921489676","name":"Hangry","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ad025b87748517512879dc0a56ddd144","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3561799921489676","idStr":"3561799921489676"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Fud","listText":"Fud","text":"Fud","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/175548847","repostId":"2153092983","repostType":2,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":555,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":187798778,"gmtCreate":1623763981394,"gmtModify":1703818580987,"author":{"id":"3561799921489676","authorId":"3561799921489676","name":"Hangry","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ad025b87748517512879dc0a56ddd144","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3561799921489676","idStr":"3561799921489676"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Comment pls","listText":"Comment pls","text":"Comment pls","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/187798778","repostId":"1127660571","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":545,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":184261385,"gmtCreate":1623716167547,"gmtModify":1704209267654,"author":{"id":"3561799921489676","authorId":"3561799921489676","name":"Hangry","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ad025b87748517512879dc0a56ddd144","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3561799921489676","idStr":"3561799921489676"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Nice","listText":"Nice","text":"Nice","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/184261385","repostId":"2143735257","repostType":2,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":163,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":314915627,"gmtCreate":1612284761469,"gmtModify":1704869415310,"author":{"id":"3561799921489676","authorId":"3561799921489676","name":"Hangry","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ad025b87748517512879dc0a56ddd144","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3561799921489676","idStr":"3561799921489676"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Wow","listText":"Wow","text":"Wow","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/314915627","repostId":"2108178483","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":286,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3527667803686145","authorId":"3527667803686145","name":"ē¤¾åŗęéæå©ę","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2b7c7106b5c0c8b0037faa67439d898f","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"authorIdStr":"3527667803686145","idStr":"3527667803686145"},"content":"Finally, when you first post [compare heart] [compare heart] post, you can get more exposure by related stocks or related topics.
