Traditionally, banks have made lending decisions using relatively small data sets -- even the most sophisticated credit models incorporate just 30 variables. In turn, lenders frequently make the wrong decisions. That means some creditworthy borrowers are rejected, and those that are approved often pay too much in interest.</p><p>Upstart uses big data and artificial intelligence to make that system more efficient. Specifically, its platform captures over 1,600 data points per applicant and measures those variables against repayment events.
