In this case, $113 = $2,260.</p><p>That’s impossible, of course. So what’s going on?</p><p>GOOG shares are splitting 20:1. After Friday’s close, every single GOOG share gets divided into 20 shares. There will now be 20X more shares on the market, but the price per share be 1/20th of what it used to be.</p><p>This is not some once-in-a-lifetime bargain to jump on.</p><p>However, interesting things can and do happen around stock splits. So in today’s <i>Market360</i>, let’s look at whether this particular split is a buying opportunity.</p><h2>Why Would GOOG Split?</h2><p>This is the second time in six weeks that a $2,000 stock has split 20-to-1.</p><p><b>Amazon</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>AMZN</u></b>) closed at $2,447 on Friday, June 3. On Monday, June 6, it opened $125.25 after the split. Perhaps not coincidentally, the stock hit its highest price that day since the end of April. As of this writing, it is down about 10% since then.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c0f064946217768fa441a97fbd220a27\" tg-width=\"624\" tg-height=\"268\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>If it feels like you’ve been hearing a lot about stock splits, that’s not because the number of splits has gone up. It’s because big and well-known stocks are doing the splitting.</p><p>In the last two years, Amazon,<b>Apple</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>AAPL</u></b>),<b>NVIDIA</b> (NASDAQ:<b><u>NVDA</u></b>), and<b>Tesla</b> (NASDAQ:<b><u>TSLA</u></b>) have all split. Tesla has another one in the works — a proposed 3-for-1 split shareholders will vote on at the company’s annual meeting Aug. 4. And one of the crazy meme stocks,<b>GameStop</b>(NYSE:<b><u>GME</u></b>), will split 4-for-1 next Friday, July 22.</p><p>The main reason companies split is to make their shares cheaper. In Alphabet’s case, the 20-to-1 split is an instant 95% price cut. That makes the stock more affordable, especially to individual investors.</p><p>Honestly, now that investors can buy fractional shares, splitting changes things less than it used to. Still, the companies want to make their stock as accessible as possible to retail investors, and a lower price is the best way to do that.</p><h2>Is the Split an Opportunity?</h2><p>Stock splits do tend to attract investors. I closely monitor buying pressure in stocks as it is a sizable chunk of my quantitative analysis, so I do follow splits closely.</p><p>Stocks also usually get at least a minor bump. Over the last five years, stocks that split are up one year later 61% of the time, according to the folks at Bespoke. But the bottom line is less encouraging. Stocks that split outperformed the market less than half the time.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0e5cff440c13bdc1951ec77d5e65eddb\" tg-width=\"624\" tg-height=\"641\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>A split by itself is not an automatic buy signal. It is a minor factor when compared to a company’s fundamentals.</p><p>I have followed Alphabet for a long time. I still think of it as Google, even though it has been almost seven years since the name changed. As you may have seen,<i>MarketWatch</i>has called me “the advisor who recommended Google before anyone else.”</p><p>I still like it all of these years later. It is one of the biggest business success stories of our time.</p><p>But that doesn’t mean I view the stock as a buy all of the time. In fact, right now I would consider it more of a hold.</p><p>While I think the split could bring in new investors — in fact, I think it could pop 8% on Monday — the biggest problem right now is earnings momentum. Earnings are expected to shrink nearly 3% in the current quarter and about 1% for the fiscal year. Alphabet fell short of expectations last quarter by 3.6%, which isn’t a huge miss, but any miss for the company has been rare in recent years.</p><p>So, should you run out and snap up shares of GOOG after the split?</p><p>Well, according to myPortfolio Grader, the answer is no — though that doesn’t mean it’s a sell either.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3af42132465d8a0ad361ab68744dfc02\" tg-width=\"590\" tg-height=\"459\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>As you can see in the Report Card above, GOOG has been a “Hold” in my Portfolio Grader for about three months now. It holds a C-rating for its Fundamental Grade, which is not bad but reflective of the current earnings situation. Its Quantitative Rating is a bit higher at B, and that may hold up after the split if buying pressure builds.</p><p>My recommendation is to hang on to GOOG if you own it, but I would be hesitant to buy it now if you don’t. Alphabet is a great company in the midst of an earnings lull, not unlike a lot of other companies. In this case, $113 = $2,260.That’s impossible, of course. So what’s going on?GOOG shares are splitting 20:1. After Friday’s close, every single GOOG share gets divided into 20 shares. There will now be 20X more shares on the market, but the price per share be 1/20th of what it used to be.This is not some once-in-a-lifetime bargain to jump on.However, interesting things can and do happen around stock splits. So in today’s Market360, let’s look at whether this particular split is a buying opportunity.Why Would GOOG Split?This is the second time in six weeks that a $2,000 stock has split 20-to-1.Amazon(NASDAQ:AMZN) closed at $2,447 on Friday, June 3. On Monday, June 6, it opened $125.25 after the split. Perhaps not coincidentally, the stock hit its highest price that day since the end of April. As of this writing, it is down about 10% since then.If it feels like you’ve been hearing a lot about stock splits, that’s not because the number of splits has gone up. It’s because big and well-known stocks are doing the splitting.In the last two years, Amazon,Apple(NASDAQ:AAPL),NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA), andTesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) have all split. Tesla has another one in the works — a proposed 3-for-1 split shareholders will vote on at the company’s annual meeting Aug. 4. And one of the crazy meme stocks,GameStop(NYSE:GME), will split 4-for-1 next Friday, July 22.The main reason companies split is to make their shares cheaper. In Alphabet’s case, the 20-to-1 split is an instant 95% price cut. That makes the stock more affordable, especially to individual investors.Honestly, now that investors can buy fractional shares, splitting changes things less than it used to. Still, the companies want to make their stock as accessible as possible to retail investors, and a lower price is the best way to do that.Is the Split an Opportunity?Stock splits do tend to attract investors. I closely monitor buying pressure in stocks as it is a sizable chunk of my quantitative analysis, so I do follow splits closely.Stocks also usually get at least a minor bump. Over the last five years, stocks that split are up one year later 61% of the time, according to the folks at Bespoke. But the bottom line is less encouraging. Stocks that split outperformed the market less than half the time.A split by itself is not an automatic buy signal. It is a minor factor when compared to a company’s fundamentals.I have followed Alphabet for a long time. I still think of it as Google, even though it has been almost seven years since the name changed. As you may have seen,MarketWatchhas called me “the advisor who recommended Google before anyone else.”I still like it all of these years later. It is one of the biggest business success stories of our time.But that doesn’t mean I view the stock as a buy all of the time. In fact, right now I would consider it more of a hold.While I think the split could bring in new investors — in fact, I think it could pop 8% on Monday — the biggest problem right now is earnings momentum. Earnings are expected to shrink nearly 3% in the current quarter and about 1% for the fiscal year. Alphabet fell short of expectations last quarter by 3.6%, which isn’t a huge miss, but any miss for the company has been rare in recent years.So, should you run out and snap up shares of GOOG after the split?Well, according to myPortfolio Grader, the answer is no — though that doesn’t mean it’s a sell either.As you can see in the Report Card above, GOOG has been a “Hold” in my Portfolio Grader for about three months now. It holds a C-rating for its Fundamental Grade, which is not bad but reflective of the current earnings situation. Its Quantitative Rating is a bit higher at B, and that may hold up after the split if buying pressure builds.My recommendation is to hang on to GOOG if you own it, but I would be hesitant to buy it now if you don’t. Alphabet is a great company in the midst of an earnings lull, not unlike a lot of other companies. In fact, I think both stocks could grow fourfold over the next 10 years, a pace that would turn $250,000 into $1 million.</p><p>Here&#39;s why.</p><p><b>1. Shopify</b></p><p>Shopify has become the retail operating system for over 1.7 million businesses. Its portfolio of software and services helps merchants manage sales across physical and digital storefronts, including websites, social platforms, and online marketplaces. Additionally, the Shopify App Store offers thousands of additional software solutions, such as tools for marketing and enterprise resource planning.</p><p>Of particular note, the company&#39;s business model differentiates it from rivals like <b>Amazon</b>. Specifically, Shopify helps merchants grow their brands and build lasting relationships with customers -- the company doesn&#39;t pull sellers onto a common marketplace then compete against them by selling similar products at cheaper prices.</p><p>Not surprisingly, Shopify&#39;s merchant-centric business model and broad product portfolio have it made quite popular with small- and medium-sized businesses, as evidenced by the company&#39;s impressive sales growth over the past 12 months.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a6fc34234732afb814af64bed5b0a367\" tg-width=\"1149\" tg-height=\"161\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>SOURCE: YCHARTS. And the company is well-positioned to maintain that momentum, as its founder-led management team is executing on a robust growth strategy.</p><p>For instance, the Shopify Fulfillment Network leans on artificial intelligence and collaborative robots to help merchants ship orders more quickly and cost-effectively. And the Shop mobile app aims to drive buyer engagement and boost repeat purchases by making relevant product recommendations. In fact, despite launching in April 2020, the Shop app surpassed 118 million registered users in the second quarter of 2021, and that number continued to rise in the third quarter.</p><p>Shopify is currently the most popular e-commerce software platform on the market, powering 27% of all online storefronts. In short, the company has a strong competitive position, and management&#39;s ambitious vision should help Shopify capitalize on its $153 billion market opportunity. That&#39;s why I think this company could grow fourfold over the next 10 years, achieving a market cap of $550 billion.</p><p><b>2. Upstart Holdings</b></p><p>Upstart is a fintech company on a mission to modernize the consumer credit industry. Traditionally, banks have made lending decisions using relatively small data sets -- even the most sophisticated credit models incorporate just 30 variables. In turn, lenders frequently make the wrong decisions. That means some creditworthy borrowers are rejected, and those that are approved often pay too much in interest.</p><p>Upstart uses big data and artificial intelligence to make that system more efficient. Specifically, its platform captures over 1,600 data points per applicant and measures those variables against repayment events. Put another way, each time a borrower makes or misses a payment, Upstart&#39;s AI models get a little smarter, creating a flywheel effect: More data means better AI, and better AI means more lending partners (and more data).</p><p>Despite being a relatively young company, the early results are promising. Internal studies have shown that Upstart&#39;s AI models can reduce loss rates by 75%, while keeping approval rates constant. Alternatively, Upstart can boost approval rates by 173% while keeping loss rates constant.</p><p>Given those results, lenders like banks, credit unions, and auto dealerships are adopting Upstart&#39;s platform at a rapid pace, and that has fueled an impressive top-line performance over the past year.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a7fc6ec87c6a0aa6498067565dacf08e\" tg-width=\"1150\" tg-height=\"162\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>SOURCE: YCHARTS. There will now be 20X more shares on the market, but the price per share be 1/20th of what it used to be.</p><p>This is not some once-in-a-lifetime bargain to jump on.</p><p>However, interesting things can and do happen around stock splits. So in today’s <i>Market360</i>, let’s look at whether this particular split is a buying opportunity.</p><h2>Why Would GOOG Split?</h2><p>This is the second time in six weeks that a $2,000 stock has split 20-to-1.</p><p><b>Amazon</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>AMZN</u></b>) closed at $2,447 on Friday, June 3. On Monday, June 6, it opened $125.25 after the split. Perhaps not coincidentally, the stock hit its highest price that day since the end of April. As of this writing, it is down about 10% since then.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c0f064946217768fa441a97fbd220a27\" tg-width=\"624\" tg-height=\"268\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>If it feels like you’ve been hearing a lot about stock splits, that’s not because the number of splits has gone up. It’s because big and well-known stocks are doing the splitting.</p><p>In the last two years, Amazon,<b>Apple</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>AAPL</u></b>),<b>NVIDIA</b> (NASDAQ:<b><u>NVDA</u></b>), and<b>Tesla</b> (NASDAQ:<b><u>TSLA</u></b>) have all split. Tesla has another one in the works — a proposed 3-for-1 split shareholders will vote on at the company’s annual meeting Aug. 4. And one of the crazy meme stocks,<b>GameStop</b>(NYSE:<b><u>GME</u></b>), will split 4-for-1 next Friday, July 22.</p><p>The main reason companies split is to make their shares cheaper. In Alphabet’s case, the 20-to-1 split is an instant 95% price cut. That makes the stock more affordable, especially to individual investors.</p><p>Honestly, now that investors can buy fractional shares, splitting changes things less than it used to. Still, the companies want to make their stock as accessible as possible to retail investors, and a lower price is the best way to do that.</p><h2>Is the Split an Opportunity?</h2><p>Stock splits do tend to attract investors. I closely monitor buying pressure in stocks as it is a sizable chunk of my quantitative analysis, so I do follow splits closely.</p><p>Stocks also usually get at least a minor bump. Over the last five years, stocks that split are up one year later 61% of the time, according to the folks at Bespoke. But the bottom line is less encouraging. Stocks that split outperformed the market less than half the time.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0e5cff440c13bdc1951ec77d5e65eddb\" tg-width=\"624\" tg-height=\"641\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>A split by itself is not an automatic buy signal. It is a minor factor when compared to a company’s fundamentals.</p><p>I have followed Alphabet for a long time. I still think of it as Google, even though it has been almost seven years since the name changed. As you may have seen,<i>MarketWatch</i>has called me “the advisor who recommended Google before anyone else.”</p><p>I still like it all of these years later. It is one of the biggest business success stories of our time.</p><p>But that doesn’t mean I view the stock as a buy all of the time. In fact, right now I would consider it more of a hold.</p><p>While I think the split could bring in new investors — in fact, I think it could pop 8% on Monday — the biggest problem right now is earnings momentum. Earnings are expected to shrink nearly 3% in the current quarter and about 1% for the fiscal year. Alphabet fell short of expectations last quarter by 3.6%, which isn’t a huge miss, but any miss for the company has been rare in recent years.</p><p>So, should you run out and snap up shares of GOOG after the split?</p><p>Well, according to myPortfolio Grader, the answer is no — though that doesn’t mean it’s a sell either.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3af42132465d8a0ad361ab68744dfc02\" tg-width=\"590\" tg-height=\"459\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>As you can see in the Report Card above, GOOG has been a “Hold” in my Portfolio Grader for about three months now. It holds a C-rating for its Fundamental Grade, which is not bad but reflective of the current earnings situation. Its Quantitative Rating is a bit higher at B, and that may hold up after the split if buying pressure builds.</p><p>My recommendation is to hang on to GOOG if you own it, but I would be hesitant to buy it now if you don’t. Alphabet is a great company in the midst of an earnings lull, not unlike a lot of other companies. As of this writing, it is down about 10% since then.If it feels like you’ve been hearing a lot about stock splits, that’s not because the number of splits has gone up. It’s because big and well-known stocks are doing the splitting.In the last two years, Amazon,Apple(NASDAQ:AAPL),NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA), andTesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) have all split. Tesla has another one in the works — a proposed 3-for-1 split shareholders will vote on at the company’s annual meeting Aug. 4. And one of the crazy meme stocks,GameStop(NYSE:GME), will split 4-for-1 next Friday, July 22.The main reason companies split is to make their shares cheaper. In Alphabet’s case, the 20-to-1 split is an instant 95% price cut. That makes the stock more affordable, especially to individual investors.Honestly, now that investors can buy fractional shares, splitting changes things less than it used to. Still, the companies want to make their stock as accessible as possible to retail investors, and a lower price is the best way to do that.Is the Split an Opportunity?Stock splits do tend to attract investors. I closely monitor buying pressure in stocks as it is a sizable chunk of my quantitative analysis, so I do follow splits closely.Stocks also usually get at least a minor bump. Over the last five years, stocks that split are up one year later 61% of the time, according to the folks at Bespoke. But the bottom line is less encouraging. Stocks that split outperformed the market less than half the time.A split by itself is not an automatic buy signal. It is a minor factor when compared to a company’s fundamentals.I have followed Alphabet for a long time. I still think of it as Google, even though it has been almost seven years since the name changed. As you may have seen,MarketWatchhas called me “the advisor who recommended Google before anyone else.”I still like it all of these years later. It is one of the biggest business success stories of our time.But that doesn’t mean I view the stock as a buy all of the time. In fact, right now I would consider it more of a hold.While I think the split could bring in new investors — in fact, I think it could pop 8% on Monday — the biggest problem right now is earnings momentum. Earnings are expected to shrink nearly 3% in the current quarter and about 1% for the fiscal year. Alphabet fell short of expectations last quarter by 3.6%, which isn’t a huge miss, but any miss for the company has been rare in recent years.So, should you run out and snap up shares of GOOG after the split?Well, according to myPortfolio Grader, the answer is no — though that doesn’t mean it’s a sell either.As you can see in the Report Card above, GOOG has been a “Hold” in my Portfolio Grader for about three months now. It holds a C-rating for its Fundamental Grade, which is not bad but reflective of the current earnings situation. Its Quantitative Rating is a bit higher at B, and that may hold up after the split if buying pressure builds.My recommendation is to hang on to GOOG if you own it, but I would be hesitant to buy it now if you don’t. Alphabet is a great company in the midst of an earnings lull, not unlike a lot of other companies. However, it shouldn&#39;t be surprising given INTC&#39;s relative valuation against the industry and its peers. While relative volatility is one of the critical considerations for dividend investors, we believe it shouldn&#39;t deter growth investors.</p><p>Therefore, whether you should buy INTC stock ahead of its Q1 earnings will depend on whether you are investing for growth or dividends.</p><p>The former seems unappealing, while the latter, with INTC stock&#39;s NTM dividend yield of 3.2%, is worth considering. Furthermore, it&#39;s higher than the semi industry average of 1.5%. In addition, CEO Pat Gelsinger has reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining its dividend through its investments phase.</p><p>But, we will not be giving this article a dividend spin, as we think it&#39;s critical for investors to consider its growth story, given its heavy investments. We discuss why INTC stock remains a Hold.</p><p><b>What To Expect From Intel’s Q1 Earnings</b></p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/25937166b8f6156c1d8ce3b1380b233c\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"395\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Intel consensus estimates (S&amp;P Capital IQ)</span></p><p>Intel is slated to deliver its Q1 earnings card on April 28, as Gelsinger &amp; Team will update investors on the YTD progress of its strategic revamp. Gelsinger appeared to be pretty confident of Intel&#39;s progress at a recent March conference. He articulated (edited):</p><blockquote>There&#39;s an insatiable demand for us to enter the market to provide a good, credible alternative. We discussed six conservative business plans, right, which de-risks the overall Intel business plan, and we gave the financial metrics against it. So I&#39;m very confident in that growth profile. And you&#39;re going to see that every quarter. We&#39;ll give you the updates on the six. And in Q1, as we do our next earnings call, you&#39;ll see the first clarity around each one of them. I think we&#39;re in great shape to deliver those growth profiles that we laid out collectively. I&#39;m a meet, beat, raise kind of guy, and that&#39;s exactly what I expect these businesses to perform. They&#39;re going to be accountable and transparent to you all. (<a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/MSTLW\">Morgan Stanley</a> TMT Conference 2022)</blockquote><p>The consensus estimates suggest Intel could post revenue of $18.33B (down 1.3% YoY), in line with Intel&#39;s guidance of $18.3B. Intel is also estimated to report an adjusted EBIT margin of 21.5%, down from Q4&#39;s 25.9%. Therefore, the Street considers Intel&#39;s guidance prudent and could have reflected the recent headwinds in the consumer PC segment. BofA (BAC) also weighed in, suggesting Intel&#39;s guidance was conservative. It added (edited):</p><blockquote>Any concerns about the weak PC market could already be baked-in to their stocks. The weakness in the PC is now well known, but any more concerns from Europe due to the war, as well as Covid-related concerns from China, could push down PC demand further in the second quarter. Intel is more exposed than <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AMD\">AMD</a> (AMD) to a slowing PC market, but the Pat Gelsinger-led company guided conservatively when it last reported. - Seeking Alpha</blockquote><p><b>Intel Stock Key Valuation Metrics</b></p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fefe4aca48ab6e7973c9182054ac26f8\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"331\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>INTC stock YTD performance Vs. peers (Koyfin)</span></p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8b8c4113a228b2df0a47c0b9bee9d508\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"384\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>INTC stock NTM FCF yield % and NTM normalized P/E (TIKR)</span></p><p>Semi investors have had a lot of volatility to deal with recently. As seen in the first chart above, the leading players have suffered over the past four months. However, INTC stock outperformed the SOXX (YTD: -24.2%) and its peers, with a YTD return of -8.9%. Coupled with its dividend yield of 3.2%, Intel investors have had some &#34;swagger&#34; over its leading peers across the semi value chain. For instance, arch-rival AMD stock is down 38.8% YTD, posting the worst performance of the group. NVIDIA (NVDA) stock is down 33.6% as investors parsed its growth premium in a potentially slower H1&#39;22 consumer end market. Even the fab equipment suppliers were not spared. Applied Materials (AMAT) and ASML (ASML) stocks are down 28.2% and 23.7%, respectively. In addition, foundry leader TSMC (TSM) is down 20.2%.</p><p>Consequently, we can surmise that the semi industry has generally gone into a bear market. The market digested its growth premium and priced in the recent weakness. Of course, except for Intel, due to its relatively lower valuation than the industry.</p><p>As seen above, INTC stock last traded at an NTM normalized P/E of 13.4x (5Y mean: 12.5x). It&#39;s also markedly lower than semi industry median P/E of 20.7x. Furthermore, the stock is still expected to be FCF profitable, despite its massive CapEx investments. As a result, INTC stock last traded at an NTM FCF yield of 1.02%, but much lower than its 5Y mean of 5.7%.</p><p>However, we think investors remain confident that Intel&#39;s FCF metrics could improve over time as it winds down the intensity of CapEx intensity. Gelsinger also alluded that its current investments cadence is necessary to compensate for previous years of underinvestment.</p><p><b>Is INTC Stock A Buy, Sell, Or Hold?</b></p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3ee1808ac1c74e3ef8ce5157ab88bb72\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"384\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>INTC stock consensus price targets Vs. stock performance (TIKR)</span></p><p>If you bought INTC stock for dividends, we think you can continue to hold it. Gelsinger was clear that he wouldn&#39;t force these investors &#34;off the bus.&#34; Instead, he recognized the importance of keeping them on board as the company invests for growth over the next few years.</p><p>But, if you are considering buying INTC for growth because it&#39;s cheap, you need to have a high conviction over its execution. Given its FCF metrics, Intel is investing very aggressively, which has significantly hampered its FCF profitability. Therefore, if these investments do not pan out accordingly over time, the market&#39;s confidence in Intel&#39;s execution could deteriorate further.</p><p>In addition, the Street has also been relatively tepid over Intel&#39;s aggressive roadmap. As a result, INTC stock&#39;s average consensus price targets (PTs) have been consistently revised downwards over the past year. Moreover, it last traded well above its most conservative PTs of $40. In addition, INTC stock normalized NTM P/E is at best in line with its 5Y mean. In 2020, another tiny biotech,&nbsp;<b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/NVAX\">Novavax</a>&nbsp;</b>(NASDAQ:NVAX), came out of nowhere to stomp the stock market, with its share price skyrocketing by 2,700%. For most of 2021, yet another small biotech has been the top-performing stock in the market, as&nbsp;<b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/SAVA\">Cassava Sciences Inc</a> </b>(NASDAQ:SAVA) jumped from under $7 a share in January to $123 a share on Aug. 24. (Whether it will keep its lead is another question, as the volatility is savage -- the stock is down to $52 as of Friday morning after news of a citizen petition against the company.)</p>\n<p>What's fascinating about the biotech sector in particular is how fast it moves. The sector is notorious for amazing price swings -- in either direction -- that can happen overnight. So why is that? Why are biotech stocks in particular so volatile? Why do they keep leading the market every year? And what biotech stock might -- repeat, <i>might&nbsp;</i>-- pull off this feat next year? Let's analyze why Axsome, Novavax, and Cassava zoomed higher over the last few years, and why I think <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/PIRS\">Pieris Pharmaceuticals</a> </b>(NASDAQ:PIRS) has a chance at a similar remarkable performance in 2022.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/image/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fg.foolcdn.com%2Feditorial%2Fimages%2F638648%2Fgettyimages-108224060.jpg&amp;w=700&amp;op=resize\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"465\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<h2>Biotech winners tend to start off tiny</h2>\n<p>The main reason these stocks were able to soar so impressively is that all three started with very tiny market caps. At the end of 2018, Axsome Therapeutics had a micro-cap valuation of $85 million. In 2019, Novavax stock fell to below $1, and the company had to do a 1-for-20 reverse split in order to keep its shares listed on the <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/NDAQ\">Nasdaq</a></b>. And at the beginning of 2020, Cassava had barely achieved small-cap status, with its market cap hovering at $240 million.</p>\n<p>So all three barn-burning stocks started off unloved by the market. Why does a biotech stock get so cheap? Probably the most common reason is the market believes the company's science is bad. Novavax, for instance, had a notable failure in its quest for a respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine. This clinical trial failure sent investors to the exits and sent the stock down into a crater in 2019, when it plunged to $4 a share (or $0.20 pre-split).</p>\n<p>Yet the market was spectacularly wrong about Novavax. While the company's RSV drug was a failure, Novavax had another drug in clinical trials, a flu vaccine. And this drug was a world-beater. It was flying through clinical trials, and it had defeated the market-leading flu vaccines from <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/SNY\">Sanofi SA</a></b>&nbsp;(NASDAQ:SNY) over and over again.</p>\n<p>In 2019, Novavax had the label of \"bad science,\" but the data for a different drug said otherwise. Sometimes companies with tiny market caps actually have compelling drugs that are performing exceptionally well in clinical trials. If you find such a company, you might want to buy some shares.</p>\n<h2>Is there enough money for a phase 3 trial?</h2>\n<p>That said, it's not enough just to have good science. Nobody is allowed to market their drugs to the public until that science has been validated in clinical trials and approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration -- and clinical trials cost a huge amount of money. Thus, before investing, it's important to determine whether the biotech has enough cash for a phase 3 trial. If the answer is \"no,\" the drug is stalled and won't go anywhere.</p>\n<p>Many unprofitable biotech companies finesse the money issue by collaborating with Big Pharma. When you see such a collaboration, you can have faith that there's enough cash for a phase 3 trial. However, these arrangements also often mean that the bigger pharmaceutical company acquires the rights to the molecule. And that can be like like selling off your future in order to pay the bills today.</p>\n<p>Interestingly, neither Axsome nor Novavax nor Cassava have an active collaboration with any big-pharma leaders. Instead, all three of these companies have elected to own 100% of the rights to their lead molecules. While the median expense for a phase 3 trial is $19 million, the numbers can vary dramatically, depending on how large the patient population is. I'd be nervous if a biotech had less than $100 million in cash (each of these has more). There's no question this independent approach is riskier, but also potentially a lot more rewarding.</p>\n<p>Biotech investors often like to see collaboration with Big Pharma -- it's a validation of the science, and it removes a lot of financial worries for small companies. But if you're chasing big rewards, you might want to look at biotech companies that are still independent (and have enough cash to stay that way).</p>\n<h2>Can Pieris pull off a miracle run in 2022?</h2>\n<p>Pieris stock is very cheap right now, with a $291 million valuation. (You know a stock is cheap when it could have a 10-bagger and still qualify as a small-cap!) Is the stock so cheap because its science is bad?</p>\n<p>It would probably be more accurate to say that Pieris' science is unproven. Like many unprofitable biotechs, Pieris doesn't have a drug in phase 3 trials yet. In fact, we're still waiting on positive phase 2 data. So it's early, and that's a danger sign. The reason Axsome, Novavax, and Cassava all skyrocketed is that all three companies made the journey from unproven drug to pivotal trials very quickly. Pieris is a few years away.</p>\n<p>Another major difference is that Pieris has signed multiple collaborative deals -- with <b>Roche</b>, <b>AstraZeneca</b>, and <b>Seagen</b>, among others. In <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> sense that's good news, because it means that money for clinical trials isn't an issue for the company. Any drugs that work will make it to phase 3 trials and beyond. And all this collaboration adds confidence that the company is on the right track.</p>\n<p>Is Pieris sacrificing its future to pay for its present? In my opinion, no. While AstraZeneca now has rights to the company's asthma drug (its lead molecule), what makes Pieris such an exciting stock is not <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> particular drug, but the company's entire platform. Pieris owns the rights to all the Anticalin proteins, and its library contains more than 100 billion of these new molecules. Anticalins are much smaller than antibodies, and as such can go where antibodies cannot. AstraZeneca paid big bucks for the rights to Pieris' asthma drug because that Anticalin molecule is small enough to go directly to the lung.</p>\n<p>I love the risk/reward equation for Pieris. If the company's drugs actually work -- we'll have data in that regard next year -- the stock will shoot much higher. Under its existing collaboration agreements, Pieris might make up to $9 billion if its Anticalin drugs reach certain milestones.&nbsp;But what will really make the stock take off is if/when other pharmaceutical players start making deals to add some of the company's Anticalin molecules to their pipelines.</p>\n<p>How do you value an entire new class of pharmaceuticals? Well, in 2019, worldwide sales for monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) totaled <i>$163 billion</i>. In 2020, another tiny biotech, Novavax (NASDAQ:NVAX), came out of nowhere to stomp the stock market, with its share price skyrocketing by 2,700%. For most of 2021, yet another small biotech has been the top-performing stock in the market, as Cassava Sciences Inc (NASDAQ:SAVA) jumped from under $7 a share in January to $123 a share on Aug. 24. (Whether it will keep its lead is another question, as the volatility is savage -- the stock is down to $52 as of Friday morning after news of a citizen petition against the company.)\nWhat's fascinating about the biotech sector in particular is how fast it moves. The sector is notorious for amazing price swings -- in either direction -- that can happen overnight. So why is that? Why are biotech stocks in particular so volatile? Why do they keep leading the market every year? And what biotech stock might -- repeat, might -- pull off this feat next year? Let's analyze why Axsome, Novavax, and Cassava zoomed higher over the last few years, and why I think Pieris Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:PIRS) has a chance at a similar remarkable performance in 2022.\n\nBiotech winners tend to start off tiny\nThe main reason these stocks were able to soar so impressively is that all three started with very tiny market caps. At the end of 2018, Axsome Therapeutics had a micro-cap valuation of $85 million. In 2019, Novavax stock fell to below $1, and the company had to do a 1-for-20 reverse split in order to keep its shares listed on the Nasdaq. And at the beginning of 2020, Cassava had barely achieved small-cap status, with its market cap hovering at $240 million.\nSo all three barn-burning stocks started off unloved by the market. Why does a biotech stock get so cheap? Probably the most common reason is the market believes the company's science is bad. Novavax, for instance, had a notable failure in its quest for a respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine. This clinical trial failure sent investors to the exits and sent the stock down into a crater in 2019, when it plunged to $4 a share (or $0.20 pre-split).\nYet the market was spectacularly wrong about Novavax. While the company's RSV drug was a failure, Novavax had another drug in clinical trials, a flu vaccine. And this drug was a world-beater. It was flying through clinical trials, and it had defeated the market-leading flu vaccines from Sanofi SA (NASDAQ:SNY) over and over again.\nIn 2019, Novavax had the label of \"bad science,\" but the data for a different drug said otherwise. Sometimes companies with tiny market caps actually have compelling drugs that are performing exceptionally well in clinical trials. If you find such a company, you might want to buy some shares.\nIs there enough money for a phase 3 trial?\nThat said, it's not enough just to have good science. Nobody is allowed to market their drugs to the public until that science has been validated in clinical trials and approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration -- and clinical trials cost a huge amount of money. Thus, before investing, it's important to determine whether the biotech has enough cash for a phase 3 trial. If the answer is \"no,\" the drug is stalled and won't go anywhere.\nMany unprofitable biotech companies finesse the money issue by collaborating with Big Pharma. When you see such a collaboration, you can have faith that there's enough cash for a phase 3 trial. However, these arrangements also often mean that the bigger pharmaceutical company acquires the rights to the molecule. And that can be like like selling off your future in order to pay the bills today.\nInterestingly, neither Axsome nor Novavax nor Cassava have an active collaboration with any big-pharma leaders. Instead, all three of these companies have elected to own 100% of the rights to their lead molecules. While the median expense for a phase 3 trial is $19 million, the numbers can vary dramatically, depending on how large the patient population is. I'd be nervous if a biotech had less than $100 million in cash (each of these has more). There's no question this independent approach is riskier, but also potentially a lot more rewarding.\nBiotech investors often like to see collaboration with Big Pharma -- it's a validation of the science, and it removes a lot of financial worries for small companies. But if you're chasing big rewards, you might want to look at biotech companies that are still independent (and have enough cash to stay that way).\nCan Pieris pull off a miracle run in 2022?\nPieris stock is very cheap right now, with a $291 million valuation. (You know a stock is cheap when it could have a 10-bagger and still qualify as a small-cap!) Is the stock so cheap because its science is bad?\nIt would probably be more accurate to say that Pieris' science is unproven. Like many unprofitable biotechs, Pieris doesn't have a drug in phase 3 trials yet. In fact, we're still waiting on positive phase 2 data. So it's early, and that's a danger sign. The reason Axsome, Novavax, and Cassava all skyrocketed is that all three companies made the journey from unproven drug to pivotal trials very quickly. Pieris is a few years away.\nAnother major difference is that Pieris has signed multiple collaborative deals -- with Roche, AstraZeneca, and Seagen, among others. In one sense that's good news, because it means that money for clinical trials isn't an issue for the company. Any drugs that work will make it to phase 3 trials and beyond. And all this collaboration adds confidence that the company is on the right track.\nIs Pieris sacrificing its future to pay for its present? In my opinion, no. While AstraZeneca now has rights to the company's asthma drug (its lead molecule), what makes Pieris such an exciting stock is not one particular drug, but the company's entire platform. Pieris owns the rights to all the Anticalin proteins, and its library contains more than 100 billion of these new molecules. Anticalins are much smaller than antibodies, and as such can go where antibodies cannot. AstraZeneca paid big bucks for the rights to Pieris' asthma drug because that Anticalin molecule is small enough to go directly to the lung.\nI love the risk/reward equation for Pieris. If the company's drugs actually work -- we'll have data in that regard next year -- the stock will shoot much higher. Under its existing collaboration agreements, Pieris might make up to $9 billion if its Anticalin drugs reach certain milestones. But what will really make the stock take off is if/when other pharmaceutical players start making deals to add some of the company's Anticalin molecules to their pipelines.\nHow do you value an entire new class of pharmaceuticals? Well, in 2019, worldwide sales for monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) totaled $163 billion.
