Since Covid-19 struck the U.S. in March 2020, the central bank has brought more than $2.5 trillion of U.S. Treasury debt, effectively covering more than half of the federal government’s red ink over that time.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f845f5d5fa4baccad7e30207df549d71\" tg-width=\"620\" tg-height=\"348\">That buying -- together with about $870 billion in purchases of mortgage-backed securities -- has flooded the financial markets with liquidity, contributing to a doubling of the stock market from its pandemic low.</p>\n<p>“It will be like crawling along a knife-edge ridge,” former Bank of England policy maker Charles Goodhart said of the task facing the Fed. “If you do too little you’ll find inflation will just go on accelerating. If you do too much you get into a financial crisis and a recession.”</p>\n<p>Fed officials have said they want to see “substantial further progress” toward their goals of maximum employment and average 2% inflation before reducing current asset purchases of $120 billion per month. None are suggesting that they’re close to achieving that, though some have pressed for discussions to begin on a plan for tapering that buying.</p>\n<p>As Powell has pointed out more than once, payrolls are still substantially below where they were pre-pandemic -- some 7.6 million jobs short, according to the May employment report. And while inflation recently has proven surprisingly rapid -- consumer prices climbed 5% in May from a year earlier -- Powell and other Fed officials have argued that the rise is mostly transitory, the result of temporary bottlenecks as the economy reopens and low readings a year ago when it shut down.</p>\n<p><b>Price Pressures Heat Up</b></p>\n<p>U.S. core and headline inflation both increased more than forecast in May</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/320b6b6419ac9bcbe999007f7786196f\" tg-width=\"643\" tg-height=\"330\">“Why would the Fed try to fix bottleneck-driven inflation by signaling earlier rate hikes and hitting demand?” Julia Coronado, president of MacroPolicy Perspectives, asked in a June 14 tweet.</p>\n<p>Instead, after years of falling short of their inflation goal, policy makers will “err on the side of patience” in scaling back stimulus, said former Fed official David Wilcox, who is now at the Peterson Institute for International Economics.</p>\n<p>Powell’s past and potential future also argue for patience. As a Fed governor in 2013, he was among those pushing then-Chairman Ben Bernanke to roll back quantitative easing, only to see the financial markets throw a “taper tantrum” at the mere suggestion such a policy shift was coming.</p>\n<p>With his own term as Fed chair up next February, Powell has an extra incentive to avoid a repeat of such turbulence.</p>\n<p>“While the Fed is an independent institution, its leadership, up for reappointment next year, could not totally ignore the dim view the administration and Democratic Congress would take toward a shift to a more pre-emptive policy stance,” Deutsche Bank chief economist David Folkerts-Landau and colleagues wrote in a June 7 report.</p>\n<p>Some three-quarters of economists surveyed by Bloomberg last week said they expect the Fed to announce between August and year-end that it will begin paring its purchases, with one-third forecasting it won’t fire the starting gun until December.</p>\n<p>It’s not just the timing of the taper that’s up for discussion. So too are its composition and pace.</p>\n<p>The Fed has faced criticism from within and outside the organization for continuing to buy $40 billion of mortgage-backed securities per month while house prices are surging. Vice Chair Randal Quarles said last month that the Fed would “certainly” look at that issue in the context of its taper discussions.</p>\n<p><b>Steady Pace</b></p>\n<p>The last time the Fed wound up a quantitative easing program, in 2014, it shrank its asset purchases at a steady pace.</p>\n<p>“Investors may be lulled into a false sense of security by that experience,” former Fed official William English told a June 8 Deutsche Bank webinar. Given all the uncertainty surrounding the post pandemic economy, “it’s not necessarily going to be the case that the Fed is going to taper in steady steps.”</p>\n<p>Much may depend on the financial markets. Since Covid-19 struck the U.S. in March 2020, the central bank has brought more than $2.5 trillion of U.S. Treasury debt, effectively covering more than half of the federal government’s red ink over that time.\nThat buying -- together with about $870 billion in purchases of mortgage-backed securities -- has flooded the financial markets with liquidity, contributing to a doubling of the stock market from its pandemic low.\n“It will be like crawling along a knife-edge ridge,” former Bank of England policy maker Charles Goodhart said of the task facing the Fed. “If you do too little you’ll find inflation will just go on accelerating. If you do too much you get into a financial crisis and a recession.”\nFed officials have said they want to see “substantial further progress” toward their goals of maximum employment and average 2% inflation before reducing current asset purchases of $120 billion per month. None are suggesting that they’re close to achieving that, though some have pressed for discussions to begin on a plan for tapering that buying.\nAs Powell has pointed out more than once, payrolls are still substantially below where they were pre-pandemic -- some 7.6 million jobs short, according to the May employment report. And while inflation recently has proven surprisingly rapid -- consumer prices climbed 5% in May from a year earlier -- Powell and other Fed officials have argued that the rise is mostly transitory, the result of temporary bottlenecks as the economy reopens and low readings a year ago when it shut down.\nPrice Pressures Heat Up\nU.S. core and headline inflation both increased more than forecast in May\n“Why would the Fed try to fix bottleneck-driven inflation by signaling earlier rate hikes and hitting demand?” Julia Coronado, president of MacroPolicy Perspectives, asked in a June 14 tweet.\nInstead, after years of falling short of their inflation goal, policy makers will “err on the side of patience” in scaling back stimulus, said former Fed official David Wilcox, who is now at the Peterson Institute for International Economics.\nPowell’s past and potential future also argue for patience. As a Fed governor in 2013, he was among those pushing then-Chairman Ben Bernanke to roll back quantitative easing, only to see the financial markets throw a “taper tantrum” at the mere suggestion such a policy shift was coming.\nWith his own term as Fed chair up next February, Powell has an extra incentive to avoid a repeat of such turbulence.\n“While the Fed is an independent institution, its leadership, up for reappointment next year, could not totally ignore the dim view the administration and Democratic Congress would take toward a shift to a more pre-emptive policy stance,” Deutsche Bank chief economist David Folkerts-Landau and colleagues wrote in a June 7 report.\nSome three-quarters of economists surveyed by Bloomberg last week said they expect the Fed to announce between August and year-end that it will begin paring its purchases, with one-third forecasting it won’t fire the starting gun until December.\nIt’s not just the timing of the taper that’s up for discussion. So too are its composition and pace.\nThe Fed has faced criticism from within and outside the organization for continuing to buy $40 billion of mortgage-backed securities per month while house prices are surging. Vice Chair Randal Quarles said last month that the Fed would “certainly” look at that issue in the context of its taper discussions.\nSteady Pace\nThe last time the Fed wound up a quantitative easing program, in 2014, it shrank its asset purchases at a steady pace.\n“Investors may be lulled into a false sense of security by that experience,” former Fed official William English told a June 8 Deutsche Bank webinar. That puts the movie-theater chain’s market capitalization at roughly $16 billion, more than 15 times what it was in 2018, a record-breaking year at the box office.&nbsp;Shares were up another 34%, to $42.92, in premarket trading Wednesday.</p>\n<p>Even if investors missed an inflection point, though, the math doesn’t add up. The reason might be that market cap isn’t the right measure. Maybe it’s enterprise value, which is essentially market cap and debt. AMC’s enterprise value is about $26 billion, compared with $6.2 billion or so at the end of 2018.</p>\n<p>AMC added debt during the pandemic as theaters in the country’s biggest cities were dark for months. And the numbers make it easy to understand why: The U.S. box office in 2020 generated about $2.1 billion in ticket sales, down 81% from the 2018 record of $11.9 billion.</p>\n<p>So, it seems investors have been vexed by movie theater economics. But it wouldn’t be the first time. The industry essentially went belly up at the turn of the millennium. Regal Cinemas, for instance, declared bankruptcy in 2001.</p>\n<p>Back then, the industry had plenty of capacity because of a new theater design—stadium seating that gave a better view of the screen. That shift meant movie theater chains had to renovate or risk losing all their patrons to movie theaters that offered the better view. In the end, too many seats and not enough patrons meant the return on the stadium-seating investments never materialized.</p>\n<p>The upshot was consolidation. With fewer operators, the number of screens stabilized. Between 2002 and 2007, Regal Cinemas became a cash-generating machine because the stock was mispriced. The stock returned 21% a year on average. The S&amp;P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average both returned less than 9% a year on average over the same period.</p>\n<p>In those days, Regal Cinema’s enterprise value about $5 billion, or about 50% of total U.S. box office sales. That’s far short of AMC today. Something new has to be different for AMC to be worth it.</p>\n<p>Maybe the movie theater business is going to go through another period of consolidation, which can usher in another golden age of returns. AMC’s Tuesday gains, in fact, were catalyzed by new capital raised so the company could go on the offensive, acquiring defunct chains. Monopolies, after all, can be good for stock returns.</p>\n<p>If AMC can increase market share and the U.S. box office sales can return to 2018 levels in a few years, total sales at might be $9 billion—$6 billion from tickets and $3 billion from concessions. Sales in 2018 amounted to $5.5 billion.</p>\n<p>Then, with better gross profit margins derived from larger scale, AMC might be able to generate $600 million in free cash flow annually, which puts the stock at about a 4% free cash flow yield. The S&amp;P 500 trades for about a 3% free cash flow yield. The numbers can work—if they’re stretched.</p>\n<p>There are problems with this scenario, though. There are lots of ifs and mights—and AMC has never generated cash flow like that in the past. Arriving at $600 million in free cash flow is more about justifying current valuations than predicting what is likely.</p>\n<p>Also, with mergers and acquisitions, AMC market shares might rise, but there are still competitors. Regal Cinemas is still out there, owned by Cineworld Holdings (CINE. London). So is Cinemark (CNK). There’s not a true monopoly.</p>\n<p>AMC and its peers have to deal with streaming, too. Windows for exclusive theater showings are shrinking. The pandemic has accelerated that. And if AMC gets too large and demanding for movie makers, the talent can always go to streaming faster, hurting box office sales.</p>\n<p>There is also the problem of the peer stocks. They aren’t trading like this is a brave new world for theaters. Cineworld stock is up 484% from its 52-week low, but shares are still off 72% from all-time highs. Cinemark shares are up 222% from their 52-week low. They are down 47% from their all-time high.</p>\n<p>AMC stock, again, is up almost 1,600% from its 52-week low and is down just 13% from its May all-time high.</p>\n<p>Wall Street just doesn’t see the potential either. Nine analysts cover the stock. The average analyst price target is about $5. Before the pandemic, the average analyst price target was $15. But there were fewer shares back then. The old target enterprise value was roughly $7 billion. It’s tough to get from $7 billion to $26 billion predicting better margins.</p>\n<p>Analysts do have positive free cash flow modeled, though–$13 million in 2022 and $90 million in 2023. For leisure and travel stocks like <b>Airbnb</b> that got slammed by pandemic shutdowns, the lifting of Covid curbs means adjusting to a whole new world.</p><p>Some tastes people acquired last year as they looked for escapes from lockdown are proving durable, like traveling to national parks by RV. Others, such as boating, grew out of surges in wealth that the stock market rally provided. As the summer travel season heats up, Americans are making new choices in where they go, when they go, how they get there and who joins them.</p><p>\"The world is never going back to the way it was,\" said Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky on an earnings call in May. \"And that means that travel is never going back to the way it was either.\"</p><p>One major trend is travelers have become more flexible about when and where they go, especially as remote work allows people to blur when they are on and off the clock. Airbnb stock rose May 24, when the company updated booking features, including an option to search for listings without fixed dates or locations.</p><p>And consumers aren't the only ones changing their habits. While tourism-dependent destinations suffered last year, the less-packed streets also showed locals the benefits of quieter communities.</p><p>Residents and local officials in normally packed hot spots like Italy and Hawaii are considering limiting the number of tourists. Such a seismic change could make visiting these places prohibitively expensive for many people. If the mix of travelers tilts more heavily toward the wealthy, travel stocks will nudge further toward luxury.</p><h2>Leisure, Travel Industry Stocks</h2><p>Shares across the sector have rebounded from last year's pandemic lows. The stocks' recent chart action is mixed. But many travel stocks have outperformed the market the past week and could present buying opportunities for investors.</p><p>Airline stocks&nbsp;like <b>American Airlines</b>, <b>United Airlines</b> and <b>Delta Air Lines</b> surged earlier this year on the Reddit stock short squeeze. Then they sold off because business and overseas travel remained weak. Since then, they've consolidated and are approaching buy points.</p><p>Cruise stocks like <b>Carnival</b>, <b>Royal Caribbean</b> and <b>Norwegian Cruise Line</b> are showing similar patterns.</p><p>Meanwhile, shares of boat makers <b>MarineMax</b> and <b>Brunswick</b> as well as RV makers <b>Winnebago</b> and <b>Thor Industries</b> need to regroup after some failed breakouts. They are no longer in buy zones but could form new bases if earnings and sales growth remain strong.</p><p>Hotel leader <b>Marriott</b> has been less volatile and is forming a base, though earnings and sales have yet to fully recover.</p><p>Airbnb stock has had a more difficult year. It surged after going public in December but began to slump in March as competition from <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/EXPE\">Expedia</a></b> rival Vrbo rental service reduced the availability of hosts. A mixed Q1 earnings report and the end of a post-IPO lockup period also weighed on Airbnb stock, which popped up 6% Thursday on higher volume but remained 35% off its 2021 high.</p><h2><b>When Luxury Means More Privacy</b></h2><p>Luxury travel, once the purview of only the ultrarich, may have won over those who might have had the means but not the need to travel lavishly. As travelers sought to avoid crowds during the pandemic, those with the means turned to options like private jets.</p><p>Arnie Weissman, editor-in-chief of Travel Weekly, says the pandemic opened luxury travel to a wider customer base. \"Some people developed a taste for it, and it's likely to continue.\"</p><p>Kim-Marie Evans, who writes the blog \"Luxury Travel Moms\" and plans travel for high-net-worth clients, told IBD she booked a trip for a family to Anguilla.</p><p>They stayed in a four-bedroom villa at the Four Seasons. And rather than flying commercially, they used a private jet service.</p><p>Private jet bookings are at or near their pre-pandemic highs, according to Elite Traveler, citing industry tracker FlightAware's data.</p><p>In May, private jet company Wheels Up said membership jumped 58% in Q1 to nearly 10,000. And VistaJet, another leading private jet company, said membership climbed 29% from a year ago.</p><p>Private jet leasing company NetJets, which is owned by <b>Berkshire Hathaway</b>, says its flight volume dropped to as low as 10% of 2019 numbers at the start of the pandemic.</p><p>Now the company, which also offers fractional ownership of its jets, says it's operating at 85% of its 2019 volume. NetJets said in a statement that commercial airlines have reduced their schedules. Consumers also are prioritizing their health and safety, choosing the seclusion of a private jet over a packed jetliner.</p><h2><b>Vacation Shift Favors These Travel Stocks</b></h2><p>Hotel chains implemented stringent Covid-19 protocols to convince visitors their properties were clean and safe. Still, many travelers opted to rent private homes through Airbnb, where they could avoid mingling with strangers in hotel lobbies, Weismann says.</p><p>Travel trends favor Airbnb stock long term, though it currently is slumping. On May 27, analysts at RBC Capital Markets rated shares at outperform, citing secular tailwinds that have yet to be fully appreciated by the market such as its dominant customer engagement.</p><p>The pandemic also shed light on the market potential of travel stocks like Marriott, which operates home-rental service Homes &amp; Villas by Marriott International, catering to ultra premium short- and long-term stays, CFRA Research analyst Tuna Amobi says.</p><p>The Homes &amp; Villas platform, which offers professionally managed private homes, had around 2,000 units at launch less than two years ago. Today, it lists nearly 25,000 properties.</p><p>\"They're where we don't have hotels, and many of them are in more remote locations, which really was quite attractive during Covid,\" said Marriott International President Stephanie Linnartz in a recent call with investors.</p><p>Airbnb also finds that customers are visiting smaller cities, towns and rural communities — not the same 20-30 cities that were most popular pre-pandemic. People are traveling outside the peak seasons and staying longer.</p><p>\"There is a mass shift from mass travel to meaningful travel,\" CEO Chesky said.</p><h2><b>Seaworthy Travel Stocks </b></h2><p>Luxury cruising should also come back with a bang. Nearly every cruise line's around-the-world luxury voyage is fully booked two years in advance.</p><p>One cruise line, Silversea, said its 139-day around-the-world cruise sold out in a single day. The Monaco-based cruise line is owned by Royal Caribbean. The cruise costs between $74,000 and $278,000 per guest, based on double occupancy. That compares with typical fares that start at $15,000-$20,000.</p><p>But others heading out to sea want to avoid crowded ships, which have seen outbreaks of coronavirus and other infections. The National Marine Manufacturers Association says new powerboat sales surged 34% in February compared to the same time period last year.</p><p>\"Inventory levels of new boats are the leanest they've ever been, and boats are being sold as soon as they hit the marketplace as manufacturers work to fulfill the backlog of orders,\" said Vicky Yu, senior director of business intelligence for NMMA. \"While new boat sales slowed in early 2021 following record sales last year, we are still seeing elevated levels as more Americans seek out boating as a way to spend quality time with loved ones.\"</p><p>The trend has pushed up leisure and travel stocks like boat retailers MarineMax and Brunswick&nbsp;as well as sport boat maker <b>Malibu Boats</b>.</p><p>\"It's really turning out to be a great alternative for people to stay close to home and with their family and friends and enjoy the boating lifestyle,\" MarineMax CFO Michael McLamb said in a conference call after reporting earnings April 22.</p><h2><b>Travel Stocks For Being Alone Together</b></h2><p>The desire to spend more time with friends and family is also spurring RV sales. They exploded in popularity during the pandemic, and sales data this year show demand remains high.</p><p>\"The rediscovery of America will continue this summer,\" Weissman said.</p><p>The pandemic accelerated long-term trends favoring the outdoors, Winnebago CEO Michael Happe said in a March earnings call. WaMu was seized by regulators in September 2008 and sold to JPMorgan Chase (JPM) for a fire-sale price of $1.9 billion.</p>\n<p>Killinger spoke to CNN Business about the similarities and differences between now and 13 years ago.</p>\n<p><b>The good news</b></p>\n<p>The Global Financial Crisis led to a wave of new federal rules that were designed to strengthen the balance sheets of top banks and ensure that another catastrophe like 2008 could never happen again.</p>\n<p>The good news is that Killinger thinks JPMorgan Chase and other \"too big to fail banks\" are in much better shape now after laws like Dodd-Frank and the Volcker Rule were put into place in the wake of the financial crisis to make big banks safer.</p>\n<p>That group of institutions also includes Bank of America (BAC), Citigroup (C), Wells Fargo (WFC), Goldman Sachs (GS) and Morgan Stanley (MS), as well as others that received government bailouts in 2008.</p>\n<p>\"Regulated banks do have more concentrated market share now so they have to be more careful,\" Killinger said. \"But the health of the industry is great, earnings are good and oversight is strong. I'm not too concerned there.\"</p>\n<p>Subprime lending, the practice of giving mortgages to people with less-than-worthy credit histories, isn't nearly as prevalent as it was during the last housing boom. But Killinger is worried about bubbles in many other parts of the economy that threaten the stability of the markets.</p>\n<p><b>Too big to fail 2.0?</b></p>\n<p>Although housing prices have surged again, Killinger is more nervous about the fact that 0% interest rates and big bond purchases by the Federal Reserve have sparked a broader mania in other assets, including cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens (NFTs), meme stocks, blank check SPAC mergers and exotic exchange-traded funds.</p>\n<p>\"The bubbles today are broader and deeper in a variety of categories, not just housing,\" Killinger said. \"The Fed's policy of low rates and massive asset purchases worked well to get out of the downturn, but when you keep extending it you can cause unintended consequences.\"</p>\n<p>\"The economy continues to improve. And there are still a lot of loans being done by non-regulated banks such as online banks and many private companies,\" she said.</p>\n<p><b>Large financial firms may be embracing too much risk again</b></p>\n<p>At least one prominent senator is worried, like the Killingers are, that some financial firms are once again getting too unwieldy.</p>\n<p>Elizabeth Warren questioned Treasury secretary Janet Yellen earlier this year about why BlackRock (BLK), the iShares ETF giant that manages more than $9 trillion in assets but is not a bank, is not considered \"too big to fail.\"</p>\n<p>Wall Street has already gotten a brief taste of how risky some of these firms are when Archegos Capital Management, a family office with big positions in media giants ViacomCBS (VIACA) and Discovery (DISCA) and Chinese techs Baidu (BIDU) and Tencent Music (TME), imploded and caused billions of dollars in losses for banks. As has been the case for most of the past year, Buffett was active in the financial sector, mostly reducing Berkshire Hathaway's positions in banks. At the company's annual investor day earlier this month, Buffett provided some explanation for all the stock selling he's done in that sector.</p>\n<p>\"I like banks generally,\" he said, \"I just didn't like the proportion we had compared to the possible risk if we got the bad results that so far we haven't gotten.\"</p>\n<p>Let's review the three big changes Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway made to their bank holdings in the first quarter.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c2da7d6438277757a73f9e626ebc6fc2\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>1. All but eliminating Wells Fargo</h2>\n<p>Everyone knew it was coming, but Buffett all but made it official last quarter, nearly eliminating his position in his onetime favorite bank, <b>Wells Fargo</b> (NYSE:WFC). Berkshire Hathaway sold 51.7 million shares, dropping its stake to a mere 675,000 shares valued at $26.3 million.</p>\n<p>This essentially ends what was an epic run for the Oracle of Omaha and Wells Fargo. Buffett first purchased shares in the large U.S. bank in 1989, and by 1994, he had acquired more than 13% of its outstanding shares. At the end of the third quarter of 2019, before the pandemic, Buffett's stake, which had a rough original cost basis of just below $9 billion, was worth close to $20 billion. And at <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> point back in 2017, it was reportedly worth as much as $29 billion.</p>\n<p>But as the fallout of Wells Fargo's phony accounts scandal and other revelations about its consumer abuses continued to play out, Buffett began to lose faith in the institution and started trimming his position. It looks like Buffett ultimately ended up making much less on his Wells Fargo investment than he could have, considering he sold more than 323 million shares between the end of Q1 2020 and the end of Q1 2021. During that 12-month period, the bank's shares traded from a low of $21.45 to a high of $39.07. At the end of 2019, they traded north of $53.</p>\n<p>The stock closed at $45.73 on Thursday, and many investors still believe Wells Fargo is undervalued these days, trading at 135% tangible book value (equity minus intangible assets and goodwill). Bank valuations have shot up in recent months, and Wells Fargo in particular could see more tailwinds when the Federal Reserve lifts the $1.95 trillion asset cap that the bank has been operating under since 2018.</p>\n<h2>2. Dumping <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/SYF\">Synchrony Financial</a></h2>\n<p>Last quarter, Berkshire Hathaway also eliminated its entire stake in the consumer finance credit card company <b>Synchrony Financial&nbsp;</b>(NYSE:SYF), selling its 21.1 million shares. Synchrony uses what it calls a \"partner-centric\" business model under which it teams up with leading retailers and digital brands that promote Synchrony's credit cards. Consumers can get deals on specific purchases by opening Synchrony credit cards, which are often branded under a retailer's name.</p>\n<p>While I wouldn't say I saw this move coming, it doesn't entirely surprise me. Over the last year, Buffett has become even more selective about which banks he wants to own. He seems to be picking a winner or two in each banking industry subcategory -- for instance, he sold his stake in America's largest bank, <b>JPMorgan Chase</b>, and loaded up on America's second-largest bank, <b>Bank of America</b>.</p>\n<p>Considering that Buffett already has a huge position in <b>American <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/EXPR\">Express</a></b>, and loves the brand, that is likely going to be his pick for a credit-card-focused holding. Berkshire Hathaway likely made a good profit on that Synchrony investment, though, considering that the stock hit its highest level ever during Q1.</p>\n<h2>3. Trimming U.S. Bancorp again</h2>\n<p>Berkshire Hathaway also sold about 1.45 million shares of <b>U.S. Bancorp</b> (NYSE:USB) in the first quarter -- but it still owns nearly 129.7 million shares. The Oracle of Omaha has sold small quantities of shares of the Minnesota-based regional bank a few times over the last year, and it's a bit unclear why. It does appear that he has made U.S. Bancorp his regional bank pick, though. He sold off his other regional bank holdings, including his stakes in <b>PNC Financial Services Group</b>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<b>M&amp;T Bank</b>, in the fourth quarter of 2020.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>One possible explanation relates to Buffett's well-known desire to keep his stakes in those banks below 10%, so he can avoid the additional reporting requirements that a higher ownership level would trigger. At the end of the first quarter, Buffett owned about 8.7% of U.S. Bancorp's outstanding shares. So his stock sale may have simply been a move to prepare for the bank's planned share repurchases, which should accelerate later this year. As has been the case for most of the past year, Buffett was active in the financial sector, mostly reducing Berkshire Hathaway's positions in banks. At the company's annual investor day earlier this month, Buffett provided some explanation for all the stock selling he's done in that sector.\n\"I like banks generally,\" he said, \"I just didn't like the proportion we had compared to the possible risk if we got the bad results that so far we haven't gotten.\"\nLet's review the three big changes Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway made to their bank holdings in the first quarter.\nImage source: Getty Images.\n1. All but eliminating Wells Fargo\nEveryone knew it was coming, but Buffett all but made it official last quarter, nearly eliminating his position in his onetime favorite bank, Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC). Berkshire Hathaway sold 51.7 million shares, dropping its stake to a mere 675,000 shares valued at $26.3 million.\nThis essentially ends what was an epic run for the Oracle of Omaha and Wells Fargo. Buffett first purchased shares in the large U.S. bank in 1989, and by 1994, he had acquired more than 13% of its outstanding shares. At the end of the third quarter of 2019, before the pandemic, Buffett's stake, which had a rough original cost basis of just below $9 billion, was worth close to $20 billion. And at one point back in 2017, it was reportedly worth as much as $29 billion.\nBut as the fallout of Wells Fargo's phony accounts scandal and other revelations about its consumer abuses continued to play out, Buffett began to lose faith in the institution and started trimming his position. It looks like Buffett ultimately ended up making much less on his Wells Fargo investment than he could have, considering he sold more than 323 million shares between the end of Q1 2020 and the end of Q1 2021. During that 12-month period, the bank's shares traded from a low of $21.45 to a high of $39.07. At the end of 2019, they traded north of $53.\nThe stock closed at $45.73 on Thursday, and many investors still believe Wells Fargo is undervalued these days, trading at 135% tangible book value (equity minus intangible assets and goodwill). Bank valuations have shot up in recent months, and Wells Fargo in particular could see more tailwinds when the Federal Reserve lifts the $1.95 trillion asset cap that the bank has been operating under since 2018.\n2. Dumping Synchrony Financial\nLast quarter, Berkshire Hathaway also eliminated its entire stake in the consumer finance credit card company Synchrony Financial (NYSE:SYF), selling its 21.1 million shares. Synchrony uses what it calls a \"partner-centric\" business model under which it teams up with leading retailers and digital brands that promote Synchrony's credit cards. Consumers can get deals on specific purchases by opening Synchrony credit cards, which are often branded under a retailer's name.\nWhile I wouldn't say I saw this move coming, it doesn't entirely surprise me. Over the last year, Buffett has become even more selective about which banks he wants to own. He seems to be picking a winner or two in each banking industry subcategory -- for instance, he sold his stake in America's largest bank, JPMorgan Chase, and loaded up on America's second-largest bank, Bank of America.\nConsidering that Buffett already has a huge position in American Express, and loves the brand, that is likely going to be his pick for a credit-card-focused holding. Berkshire Hathaway likely made a good profit on that Synchrony investment, though, considering that the stock hit its highest level ever during Q1.\n3. Trimming U.S. Bancorp again\nBerkshire Hathaway also sold about 1.45 million shares of U.S. Bancorp (NYSE:USB) in the first quarter -- but it still owns nearly 129.7 million shares. The Oracle of Omaha has sold small quantities of shares of the Minnesota-based regional bank a few times over the last year, and it's a bit unclear why. It does appear that he has made U.S. Bancorp his regional bank pick, though. He sold off his other regional bank holdings, including his stakes in PNC Financial Services Group and M&T Bank, in the fourth quarter of 2020. \nOne possible explanation relates to Buffett's well-known desire to keep his stakes in those banks below 10%, so he can avoid the additional reporting requirements that a higher ownership level would trigger. At the end of the first quarter, Buffett owned about 8.7% of U.S. Bancorp's outstanding shares. So his stock sale may have simply been a move to prepare for the bank's planned share repurchases, which should accelerate later this year. Let me suggest that you consider investing in space stocks.</p><p>2020 and early 2021 have seen a whole series of new stocks arrive on the stock market through special purpose acquisition vehicles (SPACs), an alternative to traditional IPOs.
