It's gone from teetering on the brink of bankruptcy in early January to being valued at $23 billion, as of business close on July 7.</p>\n<p>At the heart of this rally are AMC's passionate army of retail investors, collectively known as \"apes\" -- an homage to <i>Rise of the Planet of the Apes</i>, where leader Caesar infers that apes are stronger together. This might sound like a feel-good story whereby retail is finally exacting its revenge on Wall Street, but the reality is that AMC has become a battleground pump-and-dump scheme driven higher almost entirely by the misinformation and lies spread by its retail investors.</p>\n<p>While I've previously covered some aspects of the misinformation campaign used as the foundation for the rally in AMC's stock, below are the eight most pervasive lies that have fueled this pump-and-dump scheme.</p>\n<h2>Lie No. 1: Hedge fund short-selling bankrupts companies</h2>\n<p>The whopper of all lies exchanged on message boards and via YouTube is the idea that hedge fund short-selling is somehow responsible for bankrupting businesses.</p>\n<p>The reality is that the operating performance of a company determines whether or not it thrives or goes under. There are plenty of companies whose share prices are under $1 that aren't bankrupt, and there are companies with share prices north of $1 that ultimately file for bankruptcy protection. Investors who choose to buy or short-sell stock are simply betting on an outcome. They don't control or influence how well or poorly the underlying business performs.</p>\n<p>Put another way, if I buy $1 billion worth of <b>Apple</b>&nbsp;stock tomorrow, I might help lift its share price, but I've not improved its sales or profit potential <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> iota. Likewise, if I short-sell Apple's stock tomorrow, I haven't hurt its sales potential or profitability at all. Why would this hypothetical scenario be any different with AMC? Hint: It's not.</p>\n<h2>Lie No. 2: Shorts have to cover</h2>\n<p>Another dose of misinformation from AMC's apes is that short sellers of the stock have to cover. Specifically, apes are implying that there's some level of urgency here and that the disorder from excessive covering will lead to the \"mother of all short squeezes.\"</p>\n<p>The truth is that short-sellers \"have to cover\" as much as apes \"have\" to sell their position. In other words, short-sellers can cover their position at their leisure.</p>\n<p>What's more, hedge fund assets under management jumped to $4.07 trillion in June 2021, according to BarclayHedge. For short-covering to be disorderly, a massive wave of margin calls would need to come into play. Since the vast majority of hedge funds are diversified, and they have well over $4 trillion in assets in their sails, the chance of a margin call wave forcing short covering is virtually nonexistent.</p>\n<h2>Lie No. 3: The short squeeze is coming/around the corner</h2>\n<p>Just as they teach every salesperson, creating a sense of urgency with customers (i.e., potential new investors) is important. Apes are constantly hyping the idea that a short squeeze is imminent, or at worst right around the corner. Unfortunately, it's been five months since this ongoing claim began making its rounds, and there's nothing these retail folks can say to substantiate it.</p>\n<p>Aside from an institutional investor/hedge fund margin call wave being <i>highly</i> unlikely, history has also showed that short squeeze candidates have a poor track record of success. Earlier this year, I looked at the trailing three-month returns of 114 stocks with short interest above 20% and a market cap of at least $300 million. Only 9 of 114 stocks had gained 10% or more, while 94 of 114 had a negative three-month return.</p>\n<p>Apes need fresh capital to keep this pump-and-dump scheme going, but the data clearly shows that short squeezes rarely pay off.</p>\n<h2>Lie No. 4: Fundamentals don't matter</h2>\n<p>AMC's retail investors are also quick to dismiss anything having to do with concrete fundamental data. Whether it's the company's operating performance, industry ticket-sale trends, or AMC's balance sheet, they'll proudly proclaim it as FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt) and remind you this isn't a fundamental play. They do this because AMC's operating performance and balance sheet are nothing short of a horror movie, and they damage the misinformation campaign being put forward on social media and YouTube.</p>\n<p>I'll let you in on an investing secret that tenured investors know: Fundamentals always matter. Purposefully telling new investors to ignore fundamentals is like telling a used car buyer not to inspect the engine and just trust that everything is OK.</p>\n<p>For instance, social media was buzzing about <b>Washington Prime Group</b>'s short squeeze potential over the weekend of June 12 and 13. The company filed for bankruptcy protection late Sunday night (June 13), halving investors' stakes the following morning. The engine (fundamentals) drives the car; not the other way around.</p>\n<h2>Lie No. 5: Hedge funds control the mainstream media</h2>\n<p>AMC's apes need to create the impression that anything negative said about their company's stock on television, radio, the internet, or print can't possibly be true, and telling the lie that hedge funds control the mainstream media (MSM) is the easiest way to accomplish that task. Again, this pump-and-dump scam needs fresh capital to keep moving higher, therefore presenting the media as evil is an easy way to try to rally new investors to the retail cause.</p>\n<p>But, as is all-too-common with the ape agenda, it's devoid of fact.</p>\n<p>It just so happens that Harvard University provided a painstakingly thorough look at MSM ownership for 176 of the most influential media companies/outlets in May 2021. The findings? Only five of the 176 outlets are controlled or majority-controlled by private hedge funds. Apes simply hate hearing bad things said about AMC and will go to any lengths necessary to obfuscate those facts, including lying about MSM.</p>\n<h2>Lie No. 6: \"You're obviously short\"</h2>\n<p>To build on the previous point, AMC's impassioned retail investors will also claim inherent ownership biases in the anchors, guests, authors, and so on, who rail against their stock. This is necessary to help recruit fresh capital to their cause by trying to create an \"us vs. them\" mentality.</p>\n<p>To offer an example, I've personally been told on social media many dozens of times that I'm \"obviously short\" or \"clearly losing a lot of money\" because of the journalistic position I've taken on AMC. While I can't speak for any other company, I can proudly claim that my stock holdings are public information, and they're updated daily if I make a move. To boot, article disclosures state any positions I, and my company, have for any stock mentioned. This <i>includes</i> short positions, as well as any options ownership. The icing on the cake is that I also publicly announce my trading activity on <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TWTR\">Twitter</a></b>.</p>\n<p>Despite this transparent information, apes constantly and falsely insinuate a financial interest when none exists.</p>\n<h2>Lie No. 7: BlackRock and Vanguard buying AMC stock is bullish</h2>\n<p>This is <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> I find particularly amusing, because apes are more than willing to welcome institutional investors with open arms <i>if</i> they happen to own shares of AMC.</p>\n<p>Retail investors regularly use <b>BlackRock</b>'s and Vanguard's ownership of AMC stock as a reason to promote optimism. However, this tells only a fraction of the real story. BlackRock and Vanguard are two of the largest institutional investment firms in the country, based on assets under management. As of their mid-May 13F filings, which detailed their holdings for the first quarter, BlackRock had close to 5,000 positions, with Vanguard chiming in with more than 4,000 positions. During Q1, BlackRock and Vanguard added to more than 3,900 and 3,200 of these stakes, respectively.</p>\n<p>Put another way, BlackRock and Vanguard have so many product offerings that they have a stake in virtually every stock listed in an index. Saying that BlackRock and Vanguard buying AMC is bullish is akin to saying you bought shares of <b>Ford</b>&nbsp;stock because you like red paint.</p>\n<p>As a percentage of shares outstanding, hedge fund <i>and</i> overall institutional ownership in AMC fell during the first quarter from the sequential fourth quarter. That's a fact!</p>\n<h2>Lie No. 8: Apes saved AMC</h2>\n<p>The eighth and final mammoth lie that AMC's retail investors rely on to coerce community compliance and bring in fresh capital is the idea that apes saved AMC. These folks genuinely believe that by purchasing shares of AMC they've somehow saved the company from going bankrupt.</p>\n<p>As I discussed with the first lie on this list, buying and selling stock has absolutely no influence on how well or poorly a company performs from an operating standpoint. Even if apes were to buy every share in existence, AMC could still go bankrupt if its operating performance doesn't improve. And based on its 2027 bonds trading well below par, bondholders aren't convinced that things will improve enough to save the company.</p>\n<p>What really saves companies from bankruptcy is their operating performance and the actions of management. In AMC's case, selling hundreds of millions of shares of stock an issuing high-interest debt last year and in early January gave it the financial lifeline needed to survive the worst of the pandemic. That's not apes saving AMC; that's the company's actions extending a lifeline.</p>\n<p>If anything, apes are purposely harming AMC by tying the hands of CEO Adam Aron and shooting down any additional opportunities for the company to raise capital and shore up its balance sheet.</p>\n<p>If this list of lies shows anything, it's the lengths apes will go to manipulate AMC's share price. However, history is very clear that all pump-and-dump schemes end in disaster. That's not FUD. Hint: It's not.\nLie No. 2: Shorts have to cover\nAnother dose of misinformation from AMC's apes is that short sellers of the stock have to cover. Specifically, apes are implying that there's some level of urgency here and that the disorder from excessive covering will lead to the \"mother of all short squeezes.\"\nThe truth is that short-sellers \"have to cover\" as much as apes \"have\" to sell their position. In other words, short-sellers can cover their position at their leisure.\nWhat's more, hedge fund assets under management jumped to $4.07 trillion in June 2021, according to BarclayHedge. For short-covering to be disorderly, a massive wave of margin calls would need to come into play. Since the vast majority of hedge funds are diversified, and they have well over $4 trillion in assets in their sails, the chance of a margin call wave forcing short covering is virtually nonexistent.\nLie No. 3: The short squeeze is coming/around the corner\nJust as they teach every salesperson, creating a sense of urgency with customers (i.e., potential new investors) is important. Apes are constantly hyping the idea that a short squeeze is imminent, or at worst right around the corner. Unfortunately, it's been five months since this ongoing claim began making its rounds, and there's nothing these retail folks can say to substantiate it.\nAside from an institutional investor/hedge fund margin call wave being highly unlikely, history has also showed that short squeeze candidates have a poor track record of success. Earlier this year, I looked at the trailing three-month returns of 114 stocks with short interest above 20% and a market cap of at least $300 million. Only 9 of 114 stocks had gained 10% or more, while 94 of 114 had a negative three-month return.\nApes need fresh capital to keep this pump-and-dump scheme going, but the data clearly shows that short squeezes rarely pay off.\nLie No. 4: Fundamentals don't matter\nAMC's retail investors are also quick to dismiss anything having to do with concrete fundamental data. Whether it's the company's operating performance, industry ticket-sale trends, or AMC's balance sheet, they'll proudly proclaim it as FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt) and remind you this isn't a fundamental play. They do this because AMC's operating performance and balance sheet are nothing short of a horror movie, and they damage the misinformation campaign being put forward on social media and YouTube.\nI'll let you in on an investing secret that tenured investors know: Fundamentals always matter. Purposefully telling new investors to ignore fundamentals is like telling a used car buyer not to inspect the engine and just trust that everything is OK.\nFor instance, social media was buzzing about Washington Prime Group's short squeeze potential over the weekend of June 12 and 13. The company filed for bankruptcy protection late Sunday night (June 13), halving investors' stakes the following morning. The engine (fundamentals) drives the car; not the other way around.\nLie No. 5: Hedge funds control the mainstream media\nAMC's apes need to create the impression that anything negative said about their company's stock on television, radio, the internet, or print can't possibly be true, and telling the lie that hedge funds control the mainstream media (MSM) is the easiest way to accomplish that task. Again, this pump-and-dump scam needs fresh capital to keep moving higher, therefore presenting the media as evil is an easy way to try to rally new investors to the retail cause.\nBut, as is all-too-common with the ape agenda, it's devoid of fact.\nIt just so happens that Harvard University provided a painstakingly thorough look at MSM ownership for 176 of the most influential media companies/outlets in May 2021. The findings? Only five of the 176 outlets are controlled or majority-controlled by private hedge funds. Apes simply hate hearing bad things said about AMC and will go to any lengths necessary to obfuscate those facts, including lying about MSM.\nLie No. 6: \"You're obviously short\"\nTo build on the previous point, AMC's impassioned retail investors will also claim inherent ownership biases in the anchors, guests, authors, and so on, who rail against their stock. This is necessary to help recruit fresh capital to their cause by trying to create an \"us vs. them\" mentality.\nTo offer an example, I've personally been told on social media many dozens of times that I'm \"obviously short\" or \"clearly losing a lot of money\" because of the journalistic position I've taken on AMC. While I can't speak for any other company, I can proudly claim that my stock holdings are public information, and they're updated daily if I make a move. To boot, article disclosures state any positions I, and my company, have for any stock mentioned. This includes short positions, as well as any options ownership. The icing on the cake is that I also publicly announce my trading activity on Twitter.\nDespite this transparent information, apes constantly and falsely insinuate a financial interest when none exists.\nLie No. 7: BlackRock and Vanguard buying AMC stock is bullish\nThis is one I find particularly amusing, because apes are more than willing to welcome institutional investors with open arms if they happen to own shares of AMC.\nRetail investors regularly use BlackRock's and Vanguard's ownership of AMC stock as a reason to promote optimism. However, this tells only a fraction of the real story. BlackRock and Vanguard are two of the largest institutional investment firms in the country, based on assets under management. As of their mid-May 13F filings, which detailed their holdings for the first quarter, BlackRock had close to 5,000 positions, with Vanguard chiming in with more than 4,000 positions. During Q1, BlackRock and Vanguard added to more than 3,900 and 3,200 of these stakes, respectively.\nPut another way, BlackRock and Vanguard have so many product offerings that they have a stake in virtually every stock listed in an index. Saying that BlackRock and Vanguard buying AMC is bullish is akin to saying you bought shares of Ford stock because you like red paint.\nAs a percentage of shares outstanding, hedge fund and overall institutional ownership in AMC fell during the first quarter from the sequential fourth quarter. That's a fact!\nLie No. 8: Apes saved AMC\nThe eighth and final mammoth lie that AMC's retail investors rely on to coerce community compliance and bring in fresh capital is the idea that apes saved AMC. These folks genuinely believe that by purchasing shares of AMC they've somehow saved the company from going bankrupt.\nAs I discussed with the first lie on this list, buying and selling stock has absolutely no influence on how well or poorly a company performs from an operating standpoint. Even if apes were to buy every share in existence, AMC could still go bankrupt if its operating performance doesn't improve. And based on its 2027 bonds trading well below par, bondholders aren't convinced that things will improve enough to save the company.\nWhat really saves companies from bankruptcy is their operating performance and the actions of management. In AMC's case, selling hundreds of millions of shares of stock an issuing high-interest debt last year and in early January gave it the financial lifeline needed to survive the worst of the pandemic. That's not apes saving AMC; that's the company's actions extending a lifeline.\nIf anything, apes are purposely harming AMC by tying the hands of CEO Adam Aron and shooting down any additional opportunities for the company to raise capital and shore up its balance sheet.\nIf this list of lies shows anything, it's the lengths apes will go to manipulate AMC's share price. However, history is very clear that all pump-and-dump schemes end in disaster. That's not FUD. However, retail investors have bid up the stock, and shares are more than double their May low of $136.50. Meanwhile, in the first two hours of June 8, the price has risen nearly 17% to a high of $344.66 and then dropped even lower than its starting price.</p>\n<p>Many investors are hoping that a digital transformation will help the company mount a much-needed turnaround — GameStop has a long-term vision of transforming from a brick-and-mortar retail company into a digital enterprise.</p>\n<p>However, this is easier said than done.</p>\n<p>As I have mentionedin prior articles, GameStop was struggling long before the pandemic. The top line is consistently declining over the last five years as it tries to keep up with<b>Sony</b>(NYSE:<b><u>SONY</u></b>),<b>Microsoft</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>MSFT</u></b>), and<b>Amazon</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>AMZN</u></b>), competitors who are increasingly relying on digital innovation for their future success. Not the case when it comes to GME.</p>\n<p>Hence, even though the temptation to join in is there, I will still advise you to stay miles away from this one.</p>\n<p><b>Flawed Fundamentals</b></p>\n<p>Through the end of 2020, GameStop’s sales reportedlydropped more than 30% per quarter, dropping in 10 out of 11 of its previous quarters. In the last decade, the video game retailer has had several years with negative revenue growth. If we take a look at the data from the last 12 quarters, GME has reported a “positive” surprisejust four times. GME had an operating income of $648 million in 2015. Last year, the company was sitting at a $238 million operating loss.</p>\n<p>In many ways, GME reminds me of<b>Dish Network’s</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>DISH</u></b>) Blockbuster. There was a time when it looked like the home movie provider could do no wrong. However, it has become a cautionary tale of not evolving with the times. In 2004 then CEO of Blockbuster John Antioco understood the need to invest in an online platform. However, he faced stiff opposition from activist investor Carl Icahn who disagreed and removed him. In five years, the company was bankrupt.</p>\n<p>Understandably, if GME wants to avoid this future, it must think outside of the box and focus on building its digital platform. The good thing is that when George E. Sherman took the helm as GameStop’s new CEO in April 2019, he had two things in mind: reducing costs on the brick-and-mortar business and expanding the digital platform.</p>\n<p>The strategy is working. On Jan. 11, the video gamereportedworldwide sales results reflecting a 4.8% increase in comparable-store sales and a 309% increase in e-commerce sales.</p>\n<p>But the company’s e-commerce setup still does not compare in any way to Amazon or Sony.</p>\n<p><b>Beginning of the End</b></p>\n<p>The biggest question surrounding GME stock is whether it is best to count your blessings and exit. Shares are still up over 80% in a month, so Redditors still like this stock — GME and<b>AMC</b>(NYSE:<b><u>AMC</u></b>) have traded spots several times for the most popular choice among members of the platform.</p>\n<p>However, you have to ask yourself where GME stock will be in five years. Our very own Chris Markochwrote a great articleabout<b>Disney</b>(NYSE:<b><u>DIS</u></b>). He wrote, “If you had purchased shares of DIS stock on Jan. 7, 2000 and never sold your shares, you are sitting on a share price gain of over 470%. That doesn’t include any dividend gains you may have reinvested over that time.”</p>\n<p>In the article, he highlights how Disney did not sit on its haunches and has transformed itself into one of the biggest conglomerates in the world.</p>\n<p>Although new GME management deserves credit for pivoting the company into a new direction, it will take time to alleviate the issues that ail the video game retailer and move forward with a coherent strategy. Reddit enthusiasm notwithstanding, a lot of work still needs to be done before GME stock is a viable investment again.</p>\n<p><b>My Final Word</b></p>\n<p>For a long time now, I have been advocating against loading up on GME stock because of the flawed fundamentals. But does that mean that another rally is not around the corner? Considering the company has repurchased more than a third of its stock since spring 2019 at an average of $5.21/share, this is a phenomenal move on GameStop's part. This newfound capital will be needed as the company's transformation efforts are far from over.</p>\n<p>Multiple Margin Pressures Threaten Profitability</p>\n<p>While successful e-commerce models can be powerful, the formation of the e-commerce model can be costly. Infrastructure needs to be put into place, and the digital marketplace brings competition from all over.</p>\n<p>GameStop's financials are in a much better place at present. However over the long term, its largest challenge in pivoting to e-commerce is making the model profitable over the long term. There are a number of concerns I have about GameStop's ability to do this.</p>\n<p><b>Smaller Scale</b></p>\n<p>E-commerce is a \"cut-throat\" business, where scale is your friend. GameStop is seeking an e-commerce model that will pit it against much larger competitors such as Amazon (AMZN), Walmart (WMT), and Target (TGT). Game distribution continues to move increasingly digital, and is a trend that I don't see reversing. It's simply far too convenient for gamers because they can buy/pre-order a game, and it can be downloaded relatively quickly thanks to faster internet speeds available today.</p>\n<p>This has been reinforced by console makers. As a gamer myself, I had a \"bad taste\" in my mouth when sourcing my Xbox Series X. GameStop often tied its inventory of next-generation consoles to large expansive bundles that included high margin games and accessories that many consumers didn't want. If GameStop expects to become a modernized \"go-to\" shopping experience for gamers, they have work to do in the brand power department.</p>\n<p><b>The Long Path To Profitability Is Too Large A Risk</b></p>\n<p>GameStop can certainly address these concerns over time. patience. Despite the quickest drawdown of at least 30% in the broad-based <b>S&amp;P 500</b>'s storied history last year, investors who trusted in their investment theses have been handsomely rewarded. Over the trailing year, 910 stocks with a market cap of at least $300 million have doubled in value, with 62 of those stocks up by more than 500%.</p>\n<p>While it's great to see the U.S. economy getting back on track, some of the most popular stocks investors are buying are downright awful businesses. Even with things looking up for the market as a whole, the following five ultra-popular stocks should be avoided like the plague in June.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8b2e6f5c48ac79126a7c69a95b9659ed\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"484\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>AMC Entertainment</h2>\n<p>There's absolutely no question that the No. 1 stock to avoid like the plague in June is movie theater chain <b>AMC Entertainment</b> (NYSE:AMC). It's far and away the most disassociated stock from its underlying business.</p>\n<p>As most folks probably know by now, retail traders from Reddit, <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TWTR\">Twitter</a></b>, and other social media platforms have banded together to buy shares and call options in AMC, which is a fairly heavily short-sold stock. Their goal being to effect a short squeeze -- i.e., an event where pessimists (short-sellers) feel trapped in their positions and run for the exit at once. Short squeezes are very short-term events and they have a very poor track record of success.</p>\n<p>While I have a laundry list of issues with the basis for this trade, perhaps the single biggest is that retail traders are willingly ignoring AMC's dumpster fire of an income statement and balance sheet. This is a company that almost certainly won't be capable of paying back its debts when they come due by or before 2026. It's also now been hamstrung by the same retail investors who claimed to want to \"save AMC.\" That's because AMC has maxed out how many shares it's authorized to issue, and can therefore not take advantage of higher prices with a capital raise. The May proxy vote would have allowed AMC to take advantage of this recent spike, but shortsightedness from retail traders killed that idea.</p>\n<p>The AMC bull thesis is also built on a monument of misinformation. For example, retail traders believe hedge funds can bankrupt companies, when it's the operating performance and actions of businesses that determine whether or not they succeed or fail.</p>\n<p>Suffice it to say, the willful ignorance of concrete data in AMC's income statements and balance sheets will come back to haunt these traders.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9b574bce2f4c87731881bf278bde1070\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"467\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>Marathon Digital Holdings</h2>\n<p>June would also be a very good time to say goodbye to a number <b>Bitcoin</b> (CRYPTO:BTC) stocks. Cryptocurrency miner <b>Marathon Digital Holdings</b> (NASDAQ:MARA) may well top that list.</p>\n<p>As I've been previously stated, I'm not a fan of Bitcoin. Although it's the largest digital currency in the world by market value, it's been stuck at handling a meager 300,000 transactions daily for more than a year and is accepted by approximately 15,200 businesses worldwide. That's nothing when you consider that there an estimated 582 million entrepreneurs around the globe.</p>\n<p>Bitcoin is also prone to long-winded downtrends. Over the past decade, the top cryptocurrency has lost at least 80% of its value on three separate occasions. That's bad news for Marathon for two key reasons. First, Marathon Digital mines Bitcoin, and is therefore reliant on higher prices to increase its revenue. It's not even clear if Marathon's mining operations would be sustainable if Bitcoin, once again, declines by more than 80% from its high of nearly $65,000.</p>\n<p>The other issue is that Marathon purchased $150 million in Bitcoin earlier this year. While still up slightly on its investment, a protracted move lower in Bitcoin threatens to wipe out a good chunk of Marathon Digital's assets.</p>\n<p>I've said it before and I'll say it again: Crypto mining stocks are the worst way to invest in Bitcoin.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/084d89ada48e3614d1b0f7ca9fd0aa9c\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"467\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>Sundial Growers</h2>\n<p>Following its late-May rally, <b>Sundial Growers</b> (NASDAQ:SNDL) has once more emerged as the top marijuana stock to avoid, as well as <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> of the worst stocks to buy, as a whole.</p>\n<p>While marijuana is an intriguing place to put your money to work over the next five to 10 years, Canadian pot stock Sundial has consistently underperformed its peers and done nothing to build shareholder value.</p>\n<p>In an effort to rid its balance sheet of debt, the company's management team began selling stock in October 2020... and it just hasn't stopped. Sundial has built up a cash hoard of 1.08 billion Canadian (about $894 million U.S.), but has done so by issuing more than 1.35 billion shares of stock in eight months. As of May 7, the company had 1.86 billion shares outstanding -- and this figure is likely to go higher with an $800 million at-the-market share offering approved earlier this year. Sundial is building up cash with no particular purpose in mind and drowning its shareholders in the process.</p>\n<p>With 1.86 billion shares outstanding, Sundial has virtually no chance of ever producing meaningful earnings per share, and it may not be able to get back above $1 per share on a consistent basis. It'll likely have to follow in the footsteps of serial diluter <b>Aurora Cannabis</b>&nbsp;and reverse split to get its share price to a respectable level.</p>\n<p>As the icing on the cake, legal pot sales in Canada have grown significantly, while Sundial's marijuana sales have been slashed by a double-digit percentage. It's not where you want to put your money to work in the high-growth cannabis space.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2d8206c20bde46bd072cf7ee8a50b2c5\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"463\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>Castor Maritime</h2>\n<p>As a general rule, penny stocks are penny stocks for a good reason. A company that consistently has a very low share price probably has an untested operating model, is losing money, and isn't creating value for its shareholders. This pretty much sums up <b>Castor Maritime </b>(NASDAQ:CTRM).</p>\n<p>On paper, the operating model doesn't sound awful. Castor buys vessels capable of transporting dry bulk goods, such as grains, fertilizer, sugar, and steel. If the U.S. and global economy are rebounding from their pandemic lows, demand for dry bulk goods and daily charter rates should increase over time. Pretty straightforward, right?</p>\n<p>The problem is that Castor Maritime didn't have the fleet or the finances to take advantage of this rebound. To compensate, it's been selling shares of its stock like it's going out of style to raise capital to buy new vessels. Castor ended 2020 with six ships but it now owns 26, when all are fully delivered. But it's the company's shareholders who paid the price for this shopping spree. Castor's share count has risen from 3.3 million shares on Dec. 31, 2019 to about 900 million (both figures are pre-split).</p>\n<p>However, last month the company had to enact a 1-for-10 reverse split to simply remain listed on the <b>Nasdaq</b>&nbsp;exchange. Issuing so many shares pushed Castor's share price below $0.40, and a $1 minimum share price is required for continued listing.</p>\n<p>We've witnessed this same dilute and reverse-split story time and again in the shipping space. Castor is no different, which is why it should be avoided.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/image/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fg.foolcdn.com%2Feditorial%2Fimages%2F629029%2Ffather-son-video-game-controller-console-gamestop-getty.jpg&amp;w=700&amp;op=resize\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>GameStop</h2>\n<p>Since we began with a Reddit pump-and-dump stock (AMC), it's only fitting that we end with another hype-driven Reddit stock: video game and accessories retailer <b>GameStop</b> (NYSE:GME).</p>\n<p>Retail traders have flocked to GameStop for the exact same reason as AMC. GameStop had a larger percentage of its float held short than any other publicly traded company in January. This made it the ideal candidate for a short squeeze. Unfortunately, it's also spurred retail investors to now hone in on short interest data and absolutely nothing else about the companies they're buying.</p>\n<p>To be clear, GameStop is a much, <i>much</i> better and more financially sound company than AMC. A recent share offering helped raise $551 million in gross proceeds, which means GameStop has wiped out its debt and has more than enough cash to move forward with its digital transformation. In fact, all of these avoidable stocks are likely OK on the liquidity front for the next three to five years... except AMC.</p>\n<p>Where GameStop gets into trouble is if you dig into its operating performance. It's always been a brick-and-mortar-focused company. This worked well for two decades, but is problematic now that gaming has gone digital. Even with e-commerce sales up 191% last year, GameStop's total sales declined by more than 21%. In short, sales will be stagnant for years as the company shutters physical locations and invests in digital initiatives. Despite the quickest drawdown of at least 30% in the broad-based S&P 500's storied history last year, investors who trusted in their investment theses have been handsomely rewarded. Over the trailing year, 910 stocks with a market cap of at least $300 million have doubled in value, with 62 of those stocks up by more than 500%.\nWhile it's great to see the U.S. economy getting back on track, some of the most popular stocks investors are buying are downright awful businesses. Even with things looking up for the market as a whole, the following five ultra-popular stocks should be avoided like the plague in June.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nAMC Entertainment\nThere's absolutely no question that the No. 1 stock to avoid like the plague in June is movie theater chain AMC Entertainment (NYSE:AMC). It's far and away the most disassociated stock from its underlying business.\nAs most folks probably know by now, retail traders from Reddit, Twitter, and other social media platforms have banded together to buy shares and call options in AMC, which is a fairly heavily short-sold stock. Their goal being to effect a short squeeze -- i.e., an event where pessimists (short-sellers) feel trapped in their positions and run for the exit at once. Short squeezes are very short-term events and they have a very poor track record of success.\nWhile I have a laundry list of issues with the basis for this trade, perhaps the single biggest is that retail traders are willingly ignoring AMC's dumpster fire of an income statement and balance sheet. This is a company that almost certainly won't be capable of paying back its debts when they come due by or before 2026. It's also now been hamstrung by the same retail investors who claimed to want to \"save AMC.\" That's because AMC has maxed out how many shares it's authorized to issue, and can therefore not take advantage of higher prices with a capital raise. The May proxy vote would have allowed AMC to take advantage of this recent spike, but shortsightedness from retail traders killed that idea.\nThe AMC bull thesis is also built on a monument of misinformation. For example, retail traders believe hedge funds can bankrupt companies, when it's the operating performance and actions of businesses that determine whether or not they succeed or fail.\nSuffice it to say, the willful ignorance of concrete data in AMC's income statements and balance sheets will come back to haunt these traders.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nMarathon Digital Holdings\nJune would also be a very good time to say goodbye to a number Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) stocks. Cryptocurrency miner Marathon Digital Holdings (NASDAQ:MARA) may well top that list.\nAs I've been previously stated, I'm not a fan of Bitcoin. Although it's the largest digital currency in the world by market value, it's been stuck at handling a meager 300,000 transactions daily for more than a year and is accepted by approximately 15,200 businesses worldwide. That's nothing when you consider that there an estimated 582 million entrepreneurs around the globe.\nBitcoin is also prone to long-winded downtrends. Over the past decade, the top cryptocurrency has lost at least 80% of its value on three separate occasions. That's bad news for Marathon for two key reasons. First, Marathon Digital mines Bitcoin, and is therefore reliant on higher prices to increase its revenue. It's not even clear if Marathon's mining operations would be sustainable if Bitcoin, once again, declines by more than 80% from its high of nearly $65,000.\nThe other issue is that Marathon purchased $150 million in Bitcoin earlier this year. While still up slightly on its investment, a protracted move lower in Bitcoin threatens to wipe out a good chunk of Marathon Digital's assets.\nI've said it before and I'll say it again: Crypto mining stocks are the worst way to invest in Bitcoin.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nSundial Growers\nFollowing its late-May rally, Sundial Growers (NASDAQ:SNDL) has once more emerged as the top marijuana stock to avoid, as well as one of the worst stocks to buy, as a whole.\nWhile marijuana is an intriguing place to put your money to work over the next five to 10 years, Canadian pot stock Sundial has consistently underperformed its peers and done nothing to build shareholder value.\nIn an effort to rid its balance sheet of debt, the company's management team began selling stock in October 2020... and it just hasn't stopped. Sundial has built up a cash hoard of 1.08 billion Canadian (about $894 million U.S.), but has done so by issuing more than 1.35 billion shares of stock in eight months. As of May 7, the company had 1.86 billion shares outstanding -- and this figure is likely to go higher with an $800 million at-the-market share offering approved earlier this year. Sundial is building up cash with no particular purpose in mind and drowning its shareholders in the process.\nWith 1.86 billion shares outstanding, Sundial has virtually no chance of ever producing meaningful earnings per share, and it may not be able to get back above $1 per share on a consistent basis. It'll likely have to follow in the footsteps of serial diluter Aurora Cannabis and reverse split to get its share price to a respectable level.\nAs the icing on the cake, legal pot sales in Canada have grown significantly, while Sundial's marijuana sales have been slashed by a double-digit percentage. It's not where you want to put your money to work in the high-growth cannabis space.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nCastor Maritime\nAs a general rule, penny stocks are penny stocks for a good reason. A company that consistently has a very low share price probably has an untested operating model, is losing money, and isn't creating value for its shareholders. This pretty much sums up Castor Maritime (NASDAQ:CTRM).\nOn paper, the operating model doesn't sound awful. Castor buys vessels capable of transporting dry bulk goods, such as grains, fertilizer, sugar, and steel. If the U.S. and global economy are rebounding from their pandemic lows, demand for dry bulk goods and daily charter rates should increase over time. Pretty straightforward, right?\nThe problem is that Castor Maritime didn't have the fleet or the finances to take advantage of this rebound. To compensate, it's been selling shares of its stock like it's going out of style to raise capital to buy new vessels. Castor ended 2020 with six ships but it now owns 26, when all are fully delivered. But it's the company's shareholders who paid the price for this shopping spree. Castor's share count has risen from 3.3 million shares on Dec. 31, 2019 to about 900 million (both figures are pre-split).\nHowever, last month the company had to enact a 1-for-10 reverse split to simply remain listed on the Nasdaq exchange. Issuing so many shares pushed Castor's share price below $0.40, and a $1 minimum share price is required for continued listing.\nWe've witnessed this same dilute and reverse-split story time and again in the shipping space. Castor is no different, which is why it should be avoided.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nGameStop\nSince we began with a Reddit pump-and-dump stock (AMC), it's only fitting that we end with another hype-driven Reddit stock: video game and accessories retailer GameStop (NYSE:GME).\nRetail traders have flocked to GameStop for the exact same reason as AMC. GameStop had a larger percentage of its float held short than any other publicly traded company in January. This made it the ideal candidate for a short squeeze. Unfortunately, it's also spurred retail investors to now hone in on short interest data and absolutely nothing else about the companies they're buying.\nTo be clear, GameStop is a much, much better and more financially sound company than AMC. A recent share offering helped raise $551 million in gross proceeds, which means GameStop has wiped out its debt and has more than enough cash to move forward with its digital transformation. In fact, all of these avoidable stocks are likely OK on the liquidity front for the next three to five years... except AMC.\nWhere GameStop gets into trouble is if you dig into its operating performance. It's always been a brick-and-mortar-focused company. This worked well for two decades, but is problematic now that gaming has gone digital. Even with e-commerce sales up 191% last year, GameStop's total sales declined by more than 21%. In short, sales will be stagnant for years as the company shutters physical locations and invests in digital initiatives.
