funds buy shares of 27 stocks on Tuesday amid selloffPaired with deflation tweets, Wood is ‘walking the walk’: BITuesday’s brutal selloff in the aftermath of August’s hotter-than-expected inflation print looked like opportunity to Cathie Wood’s Ark Investment Management. The firm bought 27 stocks across its eight exchange-traded funds on Tuesday, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Thelargest buywas Roku Inc., which is already the third biggest holding in the firm’s flagship $8 billion ARK Innovation ETF (tickerARKK).The purchases came on a day when the technology-heavy Nasdaq 100 posted its worst one-day drop since March 2020, fueled by building bets that the Federal Reserve will unleash a historically large rate hike next week to stamp out price pressures. But while inflation is front-and-center for policy makers, Ark founder Wood tweeted on Monday that deflation is “in the pipeline” -- and Tuesday’s purchases suggest the firm is positioning for that.“Her buys have gone down quite a bit after January but are starting moving up last few days. It just seems like her conviction is higher now,” said Athanasios Psarofagis. Paired with Wood’s tweets Tuesday, “It seems like she is just walking the walk.”Ark’s ETF lineup has come under immense pressure in 2022 at the hands of a historically aggressive Fed. A series of jumbo rate hikes has battered the market’s speculative corners, dragging ARKK more than 55% lower in 2022.Amid the drawdown, Wood has stuck to her strategy of doubling-down on losers and offloading winners. Roku is nearly 71% lower this year, while Butterfly Network Inc and Zoom Video Communications Inc., Tuesday’s second and third largest buys, have dropped about 14% and 58% in 2022, respectively. The purchases were paired with the sale of roughly 1.5 million shares of Signify Health, which has seen its stock price soar about 160% since mid-June amid a bidding war for the company.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"ARKG":0.9,"ARKQ":0.9,"ARKK":0.9,"ARKF":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":2714,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9936466411,"gmtCreate":1662806408734,"gmtModify":1676537144350,"author":{"id":"3568042901804000","authorId":"3568042901804000","name":"beankim","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7e86bf0ae7dd84473464d6af842304eb","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3568042901804000","idStr":"3568042901804000"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Hahahahahahaa wow","listText":"Hahahahahahaa wow","text":"Hahahahahahaa wow","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9936466411","repostId":"2266061608","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":2571,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9930237660,"gmtCreate":1661963052953,"gmtModify":1676536613251,"author":{"id":"3568042901804000","authorId":"3568042901804000","name":"beankim","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7e86bf0ae7dd84473464d6af842304eb","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3568042901804000","idStr":"3568042901804000"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"9h man not again","listText":"9h man not again","text":"9h man not again","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9930237660","repostId":"1164311011","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1164311011","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1661959824,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1164311011?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-08-31 23:30","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Powell Abandons Soft Landing Goal as He Seeks Growth Recession","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1164311011","media":"Bloomberg","summary":"Fed chief wants weak growth, soft jobs market to cut inflation‘It’s a bit like dripping water tortur","content":"
\n
Fed chief wants weak growth, soft jobs market to cut inflation‘It’s a bit like dripping water torture,’ economist Swonk saysForget about a soft landing. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell is now aiming for something much more painful for the economy to put an end to elevated inflation. The trouble is, even that may not be enough. It’s known to economists by the paradoxical name of a “growth recession.” Unlike a soft landing, it’s a protracted period of meager growth and rising unemployment. But it stops short of an outright contraction of the economy.Powell “buried the concept of a soft landing” with his Aug. 26 speech in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, said Diane Swonk, chief economist at KPMG LLP. Now, “the Fed’s goal is to grind inflation down by slowing growth below its potential,” which officials peg at 1.8%.“It’s a bit like dripping water torture,” added Swonk, who attended the Fed’s annual Jackson Hole symposium last week. “It is a torturous process but less torturous and less painful than an abrupt recession.”The shift in Powell’s message got the attention of Wall Street. Stock prices have swooned since the Fed chair vowed to do what it takes to rid the economy of too-high inflation.Politicians in Washington took note too. Massachusetts Senator and former Democratic Party presidential hopeful Elizabeth Warren voiced concern that the Fed could tip the economy into a recession, while Senate Republican Party leader Mitch McConnell said a downturn was likely as the central bank raises rates to combat inflation. In the archetypal soft landing in 1994-95, the Fed slowed the economy briefly and contained inflation through a doubling of interest rates. But unemployment never really rose. It just stopped falling for a while. The late New York University economist Solomon Fabricant coined the term “growth recession” in research published in 1972. While such a scenario may not be as costly as an actual contraction, it poses dangers for the economy nonetheless, he suggested at the time.A tiger contained “is not the same as a tiger loose in the streets, but neither is it a paper tiger,” he wrote.Powell has seemingly concluded that it will take a tiger -- and not just a soft landing -- to attack America’s pernicious inflation. In his Jackson Hole speech, he said the labor market was “clearly out of balance,” with the demand for workers substantially exceeding the supply. That’s led to rapid wage rises that are incompatible with the Fed’s 2% inflation target.“Reducing inflation is likely to require a sustained period of below-trend growth,” Powell said. “Moreover, there will very likely be some softening of labor market conditions” -- widely seen as a euphemism for higher unemployment.Joblessness probably held steady in August at a five-decade low of 3.5% as payroll growth slowed to 300,000 from 528,000 in July, according to the median forecast of economists surveyed by Bloomberg. The monthly data are scheduled to be released by the Labor Department on Friday.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{".IXIC":0.9,".DJI":0.9,".SPX":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":2903,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9025869725,"gmtCreate":1653659169867,"gmtModify":1676535322504,"author":{"id":"3568042901804000","authorId":"3568042901804000","name":"beankim","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7e86bf0ae7dd84473464d6af842304eb","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3568042901804000","idStr":"3568042901804000"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Padapee padapoo ","listText":"Padapee padapoo ","text":"Padapee padapoo","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":7,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9025869725","repostId":"1131742262","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1131742262","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1653655854,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1131742262?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-05-27 20:50","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Nvidia Stock: Investors Are Buying the Dip. But two stocks he sold showed 2020's losers are among 2021's winners.","content":"
Famed investor Warren Buffett is known for holding S&P 500 stocks forever. But two stocks he didn't follow his own advice on highlighted a major trend in this year's market: 2020's losers are among 2021's winners so far.
\n
Buffett unloaded Berkshire Hathaway's shares of energy firm Occidental Petroleum and industrial United Airlines in the harrowing second quarter of 2020. And yet, both have powered higher in 2021's value-driven market. And not by just a little. Occidental is the S&P 500's fourth-best stock this year, up 77%. And United is up more than 30%, putting it in the index's top quintile.
\n
It's easy to see why Buffett sold. Occidental was the worst stock in the S&P 500 in 2020. Plunging oil prices in 2020 sent shares of Occidental down 77% in 2020. And United Airlines lost half its value in 2020, making it the fifth worst stock in the S&P 500.
\n
But in the value-stock led rally of 2021, where last year's worst stocks are soaring, both these stocks are coming alive for investors looking at the right indicators now.
\n
The S&P 500 Turns Upside Down
\n
Buffett is feeling the S&P 500's major flip-flop in the wallet. The index's worst stocks are turning into the best ones so far in 2021. The numbers are staggering.
\n
All 50 of the worst S&P 500 stocks in 2020 are up this year so far, says an Investor's Business Daily analysis of data from S&P Global Market Intelligence and MarketSmith. And not by a little. The worst S&P 500 stocks of 2020 are now up an average 33% in 2021 so far. That blows away the S&P 500's 5% gain this year. And the bottom 10 S&P 500 stocks of 2020 are doing even better: up 44.8% this year. Most are energy stocks.
\n
Some of the bounces are remarkable. Take Occidental. Shares are up more than 76.9% this year already to 30.63. That must sting Buffett a little. Shares got down to 18.30 apiece at the end of the second quarter, the period in which Buffett unloaded his nearly 19 million shares. The stock dropped in half from the start of 2020 until the end of the quarter Buffett finally sold.
\n
But those shares are worth $233 million more now. Occidental now has an IBD Relative Strength rating of 88. That means the stock is outperforming 88% of all others.
\n
And then there's United Airlines, a favorite stock with millennial investors. Shares plummeted in 2020, dropping to 34.61 in the second quarter of 2020 during which Buffett unloaded his entire stake. But the airline stock is now up 30% this year. That makes the 22.1 million shares Buffett sold worth $480 million more.
\n
Role Reversal Flips The S&P 500
\n
There's no denying the pandemic and following economic shutdown caused this flip in the market's winners. Cruise line operators in the S&P 500, which Buffett doesn't own, show the point.
\n
Carnival tanked 57% in 2020 to 21.66 a share as bookings dropped off. It was the second worst stock in the S&P 500 in 2020. But shares rallied 31.4% this year to 28.46, making it the 54th best S&P 500 stock this year. Carnival's IBD Relative Strength is now 69.
Amazon has told investors to expect revenue of $100 billion to $106 billion, with operating income of between $3 billion and $6.5 billion, and about $2 billion in costs related to Covid-19. The Wall Street consensus calls for revenue of $104.5 billion, with profits of $9.54 a share.
\n
The Street also clearly expects the quarter’s results to show continued strength in e-commerce. According to FactSet, Wall Street analysts expect online-stores revenue of $51.5 billion, up 41% from a year ago, with third-party sales of $21.7 billion, up 50%. Subscription revenues are expected to be $7.3 billion, up 32%, while revenue from physical stores is expected to be $4.3 billion, down 8%. AWS revenues are projected at $13.2 billion, up 29%.
\n
One open question is what forecasts the company will make for the June quarter as parts of the country begin to return to more normal economic activity. The Street is projecting June quarter revenue of $108.7 billion and profits of $10.81 a share.
\n
In an earnings preview note, Truist analyst Youssef Squali reiterated a Buy rating on the stock and a target of $3,750 for the share price. The stock closed Tuesday at $3,417.43, up 4.9% year to date.
\n
He expects revenue to come in at the high end of the range Amazon predicted, saying e-commerce demand has remained strong both in the U.S. and internationally, given that the pandemic has been slow to subside. Conversations with people in the industry and strong earning disclosed last week by Snap bode well for Amazon’s ad business, which is lumped into a category called “other,” he wrote. He also thinks the market continues to underestimate the long-term growth potential of the dominance of the company’s two key businesses—e-commerce and AWS—as well as the company’s “emerging leadership in online advertising.”
\n
Stifel analyst Scott Devitt is similarly bullish, repeating a Buy rating and $4,000 target price. He sees 40% top-line growth, a little ahead of the Street consensus. “The focus on the report will largely center on the outlook as Amazon laps the difficult prior year compares from the onset of the pandemic,” he wrote in a research note.
\n
“Growth in a post-Covid environment remains largely uncertain for Amazon and across the e-commerce landscape,” Devitt said. “Our [June quarter] revenue estimates are ahead of consensus as we see tailwinds stemming from strong growth in new Prime members and diversification across geographies and categories supporting the retail business as economies recover.” He also said AWS and the ad business are well positioned for a recovery.
\n
Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter likewise maintained an Outperform rating and $4,000 target. He thinks the company will post more revenue and operating income than it had forecast, an outperformance resulting from market-share gains in e-commerce.
\n
“We believe that a more stable economy, continued imposition of shelter-in-place orders in many of Amazon’s markets, continued expansion into the very large grocery segment, and outstanding execution likely drove strong results in Q1,” he said. “In addition, Amazon Pharmacy (launched February 2) represents a U.S. [addressable market] of around $600 billion, so any market share gains could provide further upside.”
","source":"lsy1601382232898","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Amazon Earnings Will Be Fantastic. In the risk case in which inflation were to begin to move above a level consistent with price stability, we would have the tools to address that and I am confident that we would.”
\n
\"If inflation at the end of the year has not declined from where it is in the middle of the year that will be some good evidence,\" that the Fed's current outlook is wrong, Clarida said.
\n
\"We would expect those (increases) to be transitory and as the year progresses and as we go into next year, if they are not then we will have to take that into account,\" he said.
\n
Clarida's remarks, while acknowledging the Fed's risk in keeping interest rates low while prices rise, also sketch out a narrative for why the Fed feels safe doing so.
\n
The upcoming round of price increases doesn't, in the current view, actually meet the Fed's goal of generating inflation above 2% because it won't persist long enough. In the risk case in which inflation were to begin to move above a level consistent with price stability, we would have the tools to address that and I am confident that we would.”\n\"If inflation at the end of the year has not declined from where it is in the middle of the year that will be some good evidence,\" that the Fed's current outlook is wrong, Clarida said.\n\"We would expect those (increases) to be transitory and as the year progresses and as we go into next year, if they are not then we will have to take that into account,\" he said.\nClarida's remarks, while acknowledging the Fed's risk in keeping interest rates low while prices rise, also sketch out a narrative for why the Fed feels safe doing so.\nThe upcoming round of price increases doesn't, in the current view, actually meet the Fed's goal of generating inflation above 2% because it won't persist long enough.
