Now although the three companies posted mixed delivery figures for the month of May, with Nio and Li Auto both posting declines in their deliveries versus April, and Xpeng growing sales marginally, the sales numbers likely weren’t as bad as expected, considering the semiconductor shortage that has roiled the auto industry. In contrast, major auto players such as GM and Ford had to temporarily idle or scale back production at several plants.</p>\n<p>The outlook provided by the three companies was also stronger than expected, giving investors confidence that the worst of the semiconductor shortage is likely over. Li Auto has guided to 14,500 to 15,500 deliveries for the second quarter, a sequential increase of 22% on the upper end. The company says that it is optimistic that actual numbers will exceed guidance, given that it is seeing stronger than expected orders for the upgraded version of its Li One SUV. Nio also reiterated its Q2 2021 delivery guidance of 21,000 to 22,000 vehicles, implying that it could deliver a record 8,200 vehicles in June.</p>\n<p>Now are the stocks a buy at current levels? While the growth outlook is certainly strong, the stocks don’t exactly appear cheap at current valuations. Nio trades at 14x forward revenue, while Li Auto trades at 9x, and Xpeng trades at about 16x. Near-term threats to EV valuations include higher inflation and recent commentary by the U.S. Federal Reserve, which is now apparently looking at two interest rate hikes in 2023, instead of 2024. This could put pressure on high-multiple, high-growth stocks, including EV names. While Nio delivered a total of 6,711 vehicles in May, down 5.5% from April, Xpeng was able to grow deliveries by about 10% over the last month to 5,686 units, although the number is below peak monthly sales of 6,015 vehicles witnessed in January. Although both companies reported robust year-over-year growth numbers (2x to 6x), the sequential figures are more closely tracked for fast-growing companies.</p>\n<p>However, things are probably going to get better from here. Nio, for instance, reiterated its Q2 2021 delivery guidance of 21,000 to 22,000 vehicles, implying that it could deliver as many as 8,200 vehicles in June, a monthly record. This is likely an indicator that the global automotive semiconductor shortage is easing off, and also a sign that Nio is holding its own in the Chinese EV market, despite mounting competition. Nio stock rallied by almost 10% in Tuesday’s trading, while Xpeng’s stock was up by about 8% following the report.</p>\n<p>Despite the recent rally, the stocks might still be worth considering at current levels. Nio stock remains down by about 20% year-to-date while Xpeng is down by about 22%. So how do these stocks compare post the correction? While Nio and Xpeng remain pricier compared to Li Auto, they probably justify their higher valuation for a couple of reasons. Here is a bit more about these companies.</p>\n<p>Our analysis&nbsp;<b>Nio, Xpeng &amp; Li Auto: How Do Chinese EV Stocks Compare?</b>&nbsp;compares the financial performance and valuation of the major U.S. listed Chinese electric vehicle players.</p>\n<p>Nio remains the most richly valued of the three companies, trading at about 10.5x forward revenue. Revenues are likely to grow by over 110% this year, per consensus estimates. Longer-term growth is also likely to remain strong, given the company’s wide product portfolio (it already has three models on the market), its unique innovations such as battery swapping, its global expansion plans, and investments into autonomous driving. Nio brand also has a lot more buzz, with the company viewed as the most direct rival to Tesla in China. Gross margins stood at 19.5% in Q1 2021, up from a negative 12% a year ago.</p>\n<p>Xpeng trades at about 10x projected 2021 revenues. Sales growth is projected to be the strongest among the three companies, rising by over 150% this year, per consensus estimates. Besides its higher projected growth, investors have been assigning a premium to the company due to its progress in the autonomous driving space. Xpeng currently sells the G3 SUV and the P7 sedan and its new P5 compact sedan is likely to hit the roads later this year. Although Xpeng’s gross margins have improved, rising to about 11% over Q1, versus negative levels a year ago, they are still below Nio’s margins.</p>\n<p>Li Auto trades at just 6x projected 2021 revenues, the lowest of the three companies. Revenues are likely to roughly double this year, with gross margins standing at 17.5% as of Q4 2020 (the company has yet to report Q1 results). Nio brand also has a lot more buzz, with the company viewed as the most direct rival to Tesla in China. Gross margins stood at 19.5% in Q1 2021, up from a negative 12% a year ago.\nXpeng trades at about 10x projected 2021 revenues. Sales growth is projected to be the strongest among the three companies, rising by over 150% this year, per consensus estimates. Besides its higher projected growth, investors have been assigning a premium to the company due to its progress in the autonomous driving space. Xpeng currently sells the G3 SUV and the P7 sedan and its new P5 compact sedan is likely to hit the roads later this year. Although Xpeng’s gross margins have improved, rising to about 11% over Q1, versus negative levels a year ago, they are still below Nio’s margins.\nLi Auto trades at just 6x projected 2021 revenues, the lowest of the three companies. The company’s hybrid strategy appears to be paying off - with its Li ONE SUV, which is priced at about $46,000 - ranking as the top-selling SUV in the new energy vehicle segment in China in September 2020. The new energy segment includes fuel cell, electric, and plug-in hybrid vehicles.\nXpeng produces and sells premium electric vehicles including the G3 SUV and the P7 four-door sedan, which are roughly positioned as rivals to Tesla’s Model Y SUV and Model 3 sedan, although they are more affordable, with the basic version of the G3 starting at about $22,000 post subsidies. The G3 SUV was among the top 3 Electric SUVs in terms of sales in China in 2019. While the company began production in late 2018, initially via a deal with an established automaker, it has started production at its own factory in the Guangdong province.\nHow Have The Deliveries, Revenues & Margins Trended\nNio delivered about 21k vehicles in 2019, up from about 11k vehicles in 2018. This compares to Xpeng which delivered about 13k vehicles in 2019 and Li Auto which delivered about 1k vehicles, considering that it began production only late last year. While Nio’s deliveries this year could approach about 40k units, Li Auto and Xpeng are likely to deliver around 25k vehicles with Li Auto seeing the highest growth. Over 2019, Nio’s Revenues stood at $1.1 billion, compared to about $40 million for Li Auto and $330 million for Xpeng. Nio’s Revenues are likely to grow 95% this year, while Xpeng’s Revenues are likely to grow by about 120%. All three companies remain deeply lossmaking as costs related to R&D and SG&A remain high relative to Revenues. Yet, long-term shareholders shouldn't be too disappointed with its solid Q1 2020 performance.</p>\n<p>Investors have always been focusing on Netflix's subscriber numbers, but I assert that focusing on that<i>detail</i>misses the forest for the trees.</p>\n<p>The big story here I declare is that Netflix is expertly managed and that, right<i>now</i>, investors are being asked to pay approximately 8x forward sales for Netflix - arguably its lowest valuation for a while.</p>\n<p>The short story is,<i>there are lots of exciting drivers for Netflix, and that investors shouldn't get overly caught up in a single choppy quarter.</i></p>\n<p><b>Netflix Results: What Happened?</b></p>\n<p>Netflix's results were strong, yet the stock sold off, why? The big takeaway from the commentators was that Netflix's subscriber addition for the quarter ahead is pointing towards just 1 million.</p>\n<p>This is the lowest net addition in more than 5 years, with the recent lowest net addition of subscribers being 2.2 million during Q3 2020. However, I believe that there's more at play than initially meets the eye here and that<i>context</i>is important.</p>\n<p>Accordingly, readers should keep in mind the shaky market we've seen the past few days, with tech, in particular, being hit hard.</p>\n<p>Moreover, Netflix was perceived by investors as one of the companies that were early-to-benefit from the COVID environment, with investors amply rewarding its stock very early in the pandemic.</p>\n<p>For their part, CEO Reed Hastings and team had been very consistent in their message throughout COVID, that Netflix was pulling forward subscribers and that there would at some point be a ''pause'' in the pace of net additions.</p>\n<p>Moving on, Netflix has been consistent in its message throughout the past year, although it has acknowledged that Disney (DIS) and Amazon (AMZN) Video, as well as, other streaming platforms are a competition to Netflix, that they consider this view to be too narrow. Indeed, Netflix notes that gaming and user-generated content such as YouTube (GOOG)(GOOGL) and TikTok (BDNCE) are also sources of competition.</p>\n<p>To that end, Netflix noted that churn levels were<i>lower</i>in Q1 2021 than they were back in Q1 2020. In fact, Hastings remarks that the problem is down to a lower user acquisition profile on the back of a lack of fresh content slate - that is light due to COVID impacting its production schedule and that investors should anticipate a heavier content slate in H2 2021.</p>\n<p><b>Revenue Growth Rates are Steady</b></p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ee6487aa11635049aa497a7b17e0152a\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"298\"><span>Source: author's calculations, shareholder letter</span></p>\n<p>Netflix obviously had a terrific 2020 as you can see above, but as we look ahead to Q2 2021, we can see that its revenue growth rates are pointing towards dipping below that infamous 20% hurdle.</p>\n<p>For many investors, the drop from 30% to 20% has less of a psychological impact than the drop from mid 20s% to sub 20s%. For investors, that now squarely points towards Netflix no longer being a high growth engine, but more of a mature company.</p>\n<p>Personally, if I was a Netflix shareholder, this wouldn't be the set of results I would throw in the towel. That's the great thing about investing alongside the best management teams - they are incredibly innovative.</p>\n<p>In fact, in the shareholder letter, Hastings reminds investors that Netflix has a long history of innovating, as it migrated from a DVD-by-mail towards a streaming company, as well as, a licensor of second window content to a producer of original content.</p>\n<p>Again, that's the great aspect of investing alongside owner-operated companies, they are incredibly driven and competitive. As Hastings mentions in his&nbsp;book, there is no space for sub-delivering executives. The company is always forward-thinking and has navigated plenty of setbacks before.</p>\n<p><b>Valuation - Still More Upside Potential</b></p>\n<p>During the earnings&nbsp;call, Netflix's Spencer Neumann notes the choppiness in subscriber adds during COVID. And that COVID has delayed a substantial portion of its production titles.</p>\n<p>Furthermore, Neumann and Hastings remark that investors should continue to buy into the narrative that streaming entertainment is not only growing but that it's speeding up.</p>\n<p>As a benchmark, if you compare over a 2-year stack, Netflix's net subscriber additions grew by roughly 19% CAGR, against a historical backdrop of 20% addition in subscriber numbers.</p>\n<p>This all lends itself to the point I wish to impress upon the reader, that Netflix has a lot more going for it than being just a COVID winner.</p>\n<p>Indeed, consider this, right now, Netflix notes that not only it's expecting to be sustainably free cash flow breakeven, but it's bringing down its debt on its balance sheet and starting to repurchase its own shares. Could Netflix ever become a free cash flow story? Remarkable as it may seem, I believe it's a resounding yes.</p>\n<p>What investors need to think about is that assuming Netflix reaches approximately $30 billion of revenues in 2021, that the stock is right now priced at just 8x forward sales.</p>\n<p>This would be arguably the lowest multiple that Netflix has been priced at for a while. But what's particularly noteworthy is that expectations have become so low of Netflix.</p>\n<p><b>The Bottom Line</b></p>\n<p>I make the case that investors have become ''bored'' of investing in Netflix. Yet, long-term shareholders shouldn't be too disappointed with its solid Q1 2020 performance.\nInvestors have always been focusing on Netflix's subscriber numbers, but I assert that focusing on thatdetailmisses the forest for the trees.\nThe big story here I declare is that Netflix is expertly managed and that, rightnow, investors are being asked to pay approximately 8x forward sales for Netflix - arguably its lowest valuation for a while.\nThe short story is,there are lots of exciting drivers for Netflix, and that investors shouldn't get overly caught up in a single choppy quarter.\nNetflix Results: What Happened?\nNetflix's results were strong, yet the stock sold off, why? The big takeaway from the commentators was that Netflix's subscriber addition for the quarter ahead is pointing towards just 1 million.\nThis is the lowest net addition in more than 5 years, with the recent lowest net addition of subscribers being 2.2 million during Q3 2020. However, I believe that there's more at play than initially meets the eye here and thatcontextis important.\nAccordingly, readers should keep in mind the shaky market we've seen the past few days, with tech, in particular, being hit hard.\nMoreover, Netflix was perceived by investors as one of the companies that were early-to-benefit from the COVID environment, with investors amply rewarding its stock very early in the pandemic.\nFor their part, CEO Reed Hastings and team had been very consistent in their message throughout COVID, that Netflix was pulling forward subscribers and that there would at some point be a ''pause'' in the pace of net additions.\nMoving on, Netflix has been consistent in its message throughout the past year, although it has acknowledged that Disney (DIS) and Amazon (AMZN) Video, as well as, other streaming platforms are a competition to Netflix, that they consider this view to be too narrow. Indeed, Netflix notes that gaming and user-generated content such as YouTube (GOOG)(GOOGL) and TikTok (BDNCE) are also sources of competition.\nTo that end, Netflix noted that churn levels werelowerin Q1 2021 than they were back in Q1 2020. In fact, Hastings remarks that the problem is down to a lower user acquisition profile on the back of a lack of fresh content slate - that is light due to COVID impacting its production schedule and that investors should anticipate a heavier content slate in H2 2021.\nRevenue Growth Rates are Steady\nSource: author's calculations, shareholder letter\nNetflix obviously had a terrific 2020 as you can see above, but as we look ahead to Q2 2021, we can see that its revenue growth rates are pointing towards dipping below that infamous 20% hurdle.\nFor many investors, the drop from 30% to 20% has less of a psychological impact than the drop from mid 20s% to sub 20s%. For investors, that now squarely points towards Netflix no longer being a high growth engine, but more of a mature company.\nPersonally, if I was a Netflix shareholder, this wouldn't be the set of results I would throw in the towel. That's the great thing about investing alongside the best management teams - they are incredibly innovative.\nIn fact, in the shareholder letter, Hastings reminds investors that Netflix has a long history of innovating, as it migrated from a DVD-by-mail towards a streaming company, as well as, a licensor of second window content to a producer of original content.\nAgain, that's the great aspect of investing alongside owner-operated companies, they are incredibly driven and competitive. As Hastings mentions in his book, there is no space for sub-delivering executives. The company is always forward-thinking and has navigated plenty of setbacks before.\nValuation - Still More Upside Potential\nDuring the earnings call, Netflix's Spencer Neumann notes the choppiness in subscriber adds during COVID. And that COVID has delayed a substantial portion of its production titles.\nFurthermore, Neumann and Hastings remark that investors should continue to buy into the narrative that streaming entertainment is not only growing but that it's speeding up.\nAs a benchmark, if you compare over a 2-year stack, Netflix's net subscriber additions grew by roughly 19% CAGR, against a historical backdrop of 20% addition in subscriber numbers.\nThis all lends itself to the point I wish to impress upon the reader, that Netflix has a lot more going for it than being just a COVID winner.\nIndeed, consider this, right now, Netflix notes that not only it's expecting to be sustainably free cash flow breakeven, but it's bringing down its debt on its balance sheet and starting to repurchase its own shares. Could Netflix ever become a free cash flow story? Remarkable as it may seem, I believe it's a resounding yes.\nWhat investors need to think about is that assuming Netflix reaches approximately $30 billion of revenues in 2021, that the stock is right now priced at just 8x forward sales.\nThis would be arguably the lowest multiple that Netflix has been priced at for a while. But what's particularly noteworthy is that expectations have become so low of Netflix.\nThe Bottom Line\nI make the case that investors have become ''bored'' of investing in Netflix. Its goal is to develop \"a new generation of space vehicles to open space for everyone,\" according to its website. It has manufactured and will continue to manufacture different spaceships, with a goal of targeting researchers and wealthy private individuals for sub-orbital flights. Each ticket costs $250 thousand, and the company has a total of&nbsp; approximately 600 Future Astronauts (what it calls customers who have booked future flights) at the end of the first quarter.</p>\n<p>One thing investors should note with Virgin Galactic is that it doesn't actually have a business yet. In Q1 it brought in $0 of revenue (yes, that number is correct), burned $50 million, and has a little over $600 million in cash on its balance sheet. That cash pile gives it a good cushion, at least for a few quarters, but it is likely that the company will need to raise more money in the coming years.</p>\n<p>It has typically done that by issuing stock. Since going public in 2019, its shares outstanding have gone up 179%. Virgin Galactic currently has a market cap of $12.8 billion. Since it doesn't have a business right now, there's not much to reference this market cap to, but it implies that investors should expect the company to do at least a few billion in sales and hundreds of millions in profits at some point.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4ab1895d73d79c678e757ad436915a12\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"433\"><span>Data by YCharts.</span></p>\n<h2>Lockheed Martin</h2>\n<p>Lockheed Martin is an American defense, aerospace, security, and technology company that has been doing business for the U.S. government for decades. Its largest business comes from aeronautics (which includes things like fighter jets), but it also has large missile, mission systems, and space-business lines as well. Now although the three companies posted mixed delivery figures for the month of May, with Nio and Li Auto both posting declines in their deliveries versus April, and Xpeng growing sales marginally, the sales numbers likely weren’t as bad as expected, considering the semiconductor shortage that has roiled the auto industry. In contrast, major auto players such as GM and Ford had to temporarily idle or scale back production at several plants.</p>\n<p>The outlook provided by the three companies was also stronger than expected, giving investors confidence that the worst of the semiconductor shortage is likely over. Li Auto has guided to 14,500 to 15,500 deliveries for the second quarter, a sequential increase of 22% on the upper end. The company says that it is optimistic that actual numbers will exceed guidance, given that it is seeing stronger than expected orders for the upgraded version of its Li One SUV. Nio also reiterated its Q2 2021 delivery guidance of 21,000 to 22,000 vehicles, implying that it could deliver a record 8,200 vehicles in June.</p>\n<p>Now are the stocks a buy at current levels? While the growth outlook is certainly strong, the stocks don’t exactly appear cheap at current valuations. Nio trades at 14x forward revenue, while Li Auto trades at 9x, and Xpeng trades at about 16x. Near-term threats to EV valuations include higher inflation and recent commentary by the U.S. Federal Reserve, which is now apparently looking at two interest rate hikes in 2023, instead of 2024. So how do these stocks compare post the correction? While Nio and Xpeng remain pricier compared to Li Auto, they probably justify their higher valuation for a couple of reasons. Here is a bit more about these companies.</p>\n<p>Our analysis&nbsp;<b>Nio, Xpeng &amp; Li Auto: How Do Chinese EV Stocks Compare?</b>&nbsp;compares the financial performance and valuation of the major U.S. listed Chinese electric vehicle players.</p>\n<p>Nio remains the most richly valued of the three companies, trading at about 10.5x forward revenue. Revenues are likely to grow by over 110% this year, per consensus estimates. Longer-term growth is also likely to remain strong, given the company’s wide product portfolio (it already has three models on the market), its unique innovations such as battery swapping, its global expansion plans, and investments into autonomous driving. Nio brand also has a lot more buzz, with the company viewed as the most direct rival to Tesla in China. Gross margins stood at 19.5% in Q1 2021, up from a negative 12% a year ago.</p>\n<p>Xpeng trades at about 10x projected 2021 revenues. Sales growth is projected to be the strongest among the three companies, rising by over 150% this year, per consensus estimates. Besides its higher projected growth, investors have been assigning a premium to the company due to its progress in the autonomous driving space. Xpeng currently sells the G3 SUV and the P7 sedan and its new P5 compact sedan is likely to hit the roads later this year. Although Xpeng’s gross margins have improved, rising to about 11% over Q1, versus negative levels a year ago, they are still below Nio’s margins.</p>\n<p>Li Auto trades at just 6x projected 2021 revenues, the lowest of the three companies. Revenues are likely to roughly double this year, with gross margins standing at 17.5% as of Q4 2020 (the company has yet to report Q1 results). Demand for EVs in China is likely to remain robust as the Chinese government wants about 25% of all new cars sold in the country to be electric by 2025, up from roughly 5% at present.[1]While Tesla is a leader in the Chinese luxury EV market driven by production at its new Shanghai facility, Nio, Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV), and Li Auto (NASDAQ: LI) - three relatively young U.S. listed Chinese electric vehicle players, have also been gaining traction. The company is working on developing self-driving technology and also offers other unique innovations such as Battery as a Service (BaaS) - which allows customers to subscribe for car batteries, rather than paying for them upfront. While the company has scaled up production, it hasn’t come without challenges, as it recalled about 5,000 vehicles last year after reports of multiple fires.</p>\n<p>Li Auto sells Extended-Range Electric Vehicles, which are essentially EVs that also have a small gasoline engine that can generate additional electric power for the battery. This reduces the need for EV-charging infrastructure, which is currently limited in China. The company’s hybrid strategy appears to be paying off - with its Li ONE SUV, which is priced at about $46,000 - ranking as the top-selling SUV in the new energy vehicle segment in China in September 2020. The new energy segment includes fuel cell, electric, and plug-in hybrid vehicles.</p>\n<p>Xpeng produces and sells premium electric vehicles including the G3 SUV and the P7 four-door sedan, which are roughly positioned as rivals to Tesla’s Model Y SUV and Model 3 sedan, although they are more affordable, with the basic version of the G3 starting at about $22,000 post subsidies. The G3 SUV was among the top 3 Electric SUVs in terms of sales in China in 2019. While the company began production in late 2018, initially via a deal with an established automaker, it has started production at its own factory in the Guangdong province.</p>\n<p><b>How Have The Deliveries, Revenues &amp; Margins Trended</b></p>\n<p>Nio delivered about 21k vehicles in 2019, up from about 11k vehicles in 2018. This compares to Xpeng which delivered about 13k vehicles in 2019 and Li Auto which delivered about 1k vehicles, considering that it began production only late last year. While Nio’s deliveries this year could approach about 40k units, Li Auto and Xpeng are likely to deliver around 25k vehicles with Li Auto seeing the highest growth. Over 2019, Nio’s Revenues stood at $1.1 billion, compared to about $40 million for Li Auto and $330 million for Xpeng. Nio’s Revenues are likely to grow 95% this year, while Xpeng’s Revenues are likely to grow by about 120%. All three companies remain deeply lossmaking as costs related to R&amp;D and SG&amp;A remain high relative to Revenues. Nio’s Net Margins stood at -195% in 2019, Li Auto’s margins stood at about -860% while Xpeng’s margins stood at -160%. However, margins are likely to improve sharply in 2020, as volumes pick up.</p>\n<p><b>Valuation</b></p>\n<p>Nio’s Market Cap stood at about $37 billion as of October 28, 2020, with its stock price rising by about 7x year-to-date due to surging investor interest in EV stocks. Li Auto and Xpeng, which were both listed in the U.S. around August as they looked to capitalize on surging valuations, have a market cap of about $15 billion and $14 billion, respectively.
