At the same time, that market expands to nearly 50% when a vehicle's price point drops below $30K. Therefore, if TSLA were to launch a cheaper option compared to the Model 3 and Model Y their addressable market would increase significantly.

Ark Invest stated: “In our view, fears of declining demand for Tesla vehicles are misplaced. If anything, Tesla is supply constrained at current price points, and a $30,000 vehicle could expand demand ten-fold. We would not be surprised if Tesla’s next-generation vehicle is the cyber robotaxi.”

Wood who has been a longtime bull on TSLA also added 10,821 shares of the EV giant to the ARK Autonomous Technology & Robotics ETF (BATS:ARKQ) on Monday.

For ARKQ, Tesla represents the top holding, with a weighting in the fund of 10.12%.

Additionally, the ARK Innovation ETF (NYSEARCA:ARKK), Wood’s flagship fund, holds a 9.17% weighting towards the company. At the same time, that market expands to nearly 50% when a vehicle's price point drops below $30K. Therefore, if TSLA were to launch a cheaper option compared to the Model 3 and Model Y their addressable market would increase significantly.Ark Invest stated: “In our view, fears of declining demand for Tesla vehicles are misplaced. If anything, Tesla is supply constrained at current price points, and a $30,000 vehicle could expand demand ten-fold. We would not be surprised if Tesla’s next-generation vehicle is the cyber robotaxi.”Wood who has been a longtime bull on TSLA also added 10,821 shares of the EV giant to the ARK Autonomous Technology & Robotics ETF (BATS:ARKQ) on Monday. For ARKQ, Tesla represents the top holding, with a weighting in the fund of 10.12%.Additionally, the ARK Innovation ETF (NYSEARCA:ARKK), Wood’s flagship fund, holds a 9.17% weighting towards the company. This represents ARKK's second-largest position. The ARK Next Generation Internet ETF (NYSEARCA:ARKW) is also involved with TSLA, as the ETF positions the company as its second heaviest weighting at 8.26%.Year-to-date price action: TSLA -47.2%, ARKQ -44.2%, ARKK -63.5%, and ARKW -62.9%.In other TSLA related news, Morgan Stanley cut its base case price target on Overweight-rated Tesla to $330 from $350.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"TSLA":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":3118,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9988138207,"gmtCreate":1666688912609,"gmtModify":1676537790209,"author":{"id":"3568434392717104","authorId":"3568434392717104","name":"游民一主","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/aaef2ad09df503da07f3ba1c14e30288","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3568434392717104","idStr":"3568434392717104"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Nice","listText":"Nice","text":"Nice","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9988138207","repostId":"1124727428","repostType":2,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":2651,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9915051342,"gmtCreate":1664929939587,"gmtModify":1676537530009,"author":{"id":"3568434392717104","authorId":"3568434392717104","name":"游民一主","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/aaef2ad09df503da07f3ba1c14e30288","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3568434392717104","idStr":"3568434392717104"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Read","listText":"Read","text":"Read","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9915051342","repostId":"2272853495","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2272853495","kind":"highlight","pubTimestamp":1664927617,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2272853495?lang=en_US&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-10-05 07:53","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Goldman Expects AMD to Cut its FY Forecast This Month, Says Headwinds are Priced In","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2272853495","media":"StreetInsider","summary":"Goldman Sachs cut price targets on Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD) and Intel Corporation (NA","content":"

Goldman Sachs cut price targets on Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD) and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) to reflect slashed CPU volume assumptions. Since taking the reins in 1965, he's created more than $630 billion in value for shareholders (himself included), as well as delivered a return of 3,641,613% for his company's Class A shareholders (BRK.A), as of Dec. 31, 2021.Having invested for longer than most Americans have been alive, the Oracle of Omaha has seen just about everything. He's lived through more than a dozen recessions, as well as 39 double-digit pullbacks in the benchmark S&P 500 since the beginning of 1950. There's not a thing Wall Street or the U.S. economy can throw Buffett's way that'll scare him or his investing team to the sidelines.A perfect case in point is the United States' historically high inflation rate of 9.1%, as of June 2022. Despite the price for goods and services rising at the quickest pace in four decades, Warren Buffett has been aggressively putting his company's capital to work in a number of stocks. What follows are five stocks Buffett has piled into as inflation soars.Chevron & Occidental PetroleumThe first two stocks Warren Buffett has been buying hand over fist as inflation skyrockets are energy giants Chevron and Occidental Petroleum. I'm discussing both companies together because their operating models are extremely similar, and Buffett's reasoning for piling into these companies is as well.During the first quarter, Berkshire Hathaway added slightly more than 120.9 million shares of Chevron, making it the fifth-largest position in Buffett's portfolio, as of July 22. Meanwhile, the share-buying of Occidental Petroleum has been more methodical, with Berkshire Hathaway filing paperwork with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) seemingly every couple of weeks to note a new purchase. Close to 50 million total shares of Occidental have been bought by Buffett's company since the end of the first quarter. With inflation at a 40-year high, buying mammoth stakes in Chevron and Occidental Petroleum likely signals that Buffett and his investing team expect oil, natural gas, and natural gas liquid prices to remain elevated for an extended period of time. Both Chevron and Occidental generate their juiciest operating margins from their upstream drilling segments. In other words, these stocks are a way to take advantage of sustainably higher energy commodity prices.Chevron and Occidental also happen to be integrated oil stocks. This means that, in addition to their prized upstream assets, they have midstream (e.g., transmission pipelines and/or storage) and downstream assets (refineries and/or chemical plants). If and when the price of energy commodities falls, downstream assets benefit from lower input costs and higher demand. Meanwhile, midstream assets often have fixed-fee or volume-based deals in place, which are generally immune to wild swings in commodity prices. The one thing to note that is different about Chevron and Occidental is their respective balance sheets. Chevron has among the lowest debt-to-equity ratios in the oil industry, whereas Occidental was buried in debt following its acquisition of Anadarko in 2019.Citigroup & Ally FinancialThe third and fourth stocks Warren Buffett has been piling into as inflation ascends to historic highs are bank stocks Citigroup and Ally Financial. Yet again I've chosen to discuss two companies at once because the thesis behind Buffett's purchases should be nearly identical for both stocks.During the first quarter, Berkshire Hathaway gobbled up more than 55.1 million shares of Citigroup, as well as nearly 9 million shares of Ally Financial. The Ally position is reasonably small (it was worth about $300 million as of this past weekend), with the Citigroup stake nearing $2.9 billion.Under normal circumstances, buying bank stocks with fears of a recession looming wouldn't be an advisable strategy. That's because banks typically face a double whammy when a recession strikes. First, they contend with rising loan delinquencies as economic weakness weighs on consumers and businesses. Second, the Federal Reserve would often come to the rescue by lowering interest rates to encourage lending. Lower interest rates reduce the net interest income-earning potential of banks. But this time really is different. With inflation soaring, the nation's central bank has no choice but to aggressively increase its federal funds target rate to get rising prices under control. Even though loan delinquencies could rise and Citigroup and Ally Financial could be inclined to set aside capital for loan losses, both banks should benefit from higher net-interest income as a result of the Fed's hawkish monetary policy shift.Warren Buffett is also a big fan of playing a simple numbers game that favors the patient. You see, bank stocks like Citigroup and Ally Financial are cyclical. When the economy struggles, banks struggle. Conversely, when the U.S. and global economy are firing on all cylinders, banks are typically growing their loans and deposits. The thing is, recessions only last for a couple of quarters, whereas periods of economic expansion can go on for years. Buying shares of Citigroup and Ally Financial is a smart way of taking advantage of this simple numbers game and benefiting from the natural expansion of the U.S. and global economy.Activision BlizzardThe fifth stock Warren Buffett has piled into as inflation skyrockets is gaming company Activision Blizzard. Although Berkshire ended the first quarter with an 8.2% stake in Activision, the Oracle of Omaha noted during his company's annual shareholder meeting in late April that this position had grown to 9.5%. A 9.5% stake would mean Berkshire owns around 74 million shares. The Activision Blizzard stake is nothing short of a head-scratcher -- until you dig a bit deeper. I say this because Buffett isn't known for investing in tech stocks -- especially tech stocks focused on gaming. Personally, I'd be surprised if the Oracle of Omaha could name a single gaming franchise that drives Activision's top line. So, \"Why Activision?\" The simple answer is the arbitrage opportunity. In mid-January, Microsoft announced an all-cash offer to acquire Activision for $95 per share. Microsoft already has a sizable gaming presence; however, it's likely angling to use Activision as its on-ramp to the metaverse. What makes this deal so appealing to Buffett is how far below the all-cash offer price Activision has traded. As of this past weekend, shares of the gaming company were roughly 20% below Microsoft's buyout price. While there's some concern about whether international regulators will allow the deal to close, a completed buyout would result in a 20% gain from current levels. A 20% return in a year or less would put even historically high inflation in its place.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"C":0.9,"CVX":0.9,"ALLY":0.9,"OXY":0.9,"ATVI":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1181,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9075332355,"gmtCreate":1658144986277,"gmtModify":1676536111887,"author":{"id":"3568434392717104","authorId":"3568434392717104","name":"游民一主","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/aaef2ad09df503da07f3ba1c14e30288","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3568434392717104","idStr":"3568434392717104"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Read","listText":"Read","text":"Read","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9075332355","repostId":"1129251277","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1129251277","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1658139389,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1129251277?lang=en_US&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-07-18 18:16","market":"sg","language":"en","title":"Singapore Stocks Climb on Wall Street Strength; The company will enact a stock split this Friday, July 15. Several Wall Street analysts have issued “buy” ratings and optimistic price targets on Alphabet stock.Alphabet’s 20-for-1 share split won’t suddenly make current stockholders poorer. Rather, they’ll have many more shares, and those shares will be much less expensive. So, technically speaking, the split won’t affect the value of the investors’ current holdings.Yet, it’s possible that Alphabet stock could get a price bump for other reasons. Imagine if the shares only cost $113 apiece instead of $2,260. This would make the stock much more affordable for retail investors with smaller account sizes.Besides, the stock will just seem cheaper, even if the objective value of the shares hasn’t actually changed. Granted, some brokers offer fractional shares, but this isn’t available to everyone. Therefore, Alphabet’s stock split could prove to be a significant event on Wall Street. What Do Analysts Predict for Alphabet Stock?Of course, enacting a stock split doesn’t eliminate Google’s problems. Due to the threat of a possible recession, CEO Sundar Pichai revealed that the company intends to cut back on hiring for the remainder of this year.High inflation and supply-chain issues will undoubtedly continue to create problems for Alphabet. Nevertheless, at least four analysts expect Alphabet stock to move higher.Cowen’s John Blackledge, Evercore’s Mark Mahaney, JPMorgan’s Doug Anmuth and UBS’s Lloyd Walmsley all reiterated “buy” ratings on Alphabet shares during the past month. The price targets set for the stock were $3,000 for Blackledge, $3,300 for Mahaney, $2,800 for Anmuth and $2,650 for Walmsley.Specific analyst commentary on Alphabet remained elusive, but perhaps these Wall Street experts expect investors to jump on Alphabet stock after the split. Bank of America reportedly calculated that companies’ share prices increase 7.8% on average during the three months after they announce stock splits.Traders might not want to act too quickly, though, since Alphabet is set to report its second-quarter 2022 earnings on July 26. This event could have a major impact on the GOOG and GOOGL share prices. So, feel free to enjoy this “summer of splits,” but as always, invest carefully.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"GOOG":1,"GOOGL":1}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1665,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9071907129,"gmtCreate":1657443814061,"gmtModify":1676536008690,"author":{"id":"3568434392717104","authorId":"3568434392717104","name":"游民一主","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/aaef2ad09df503da07f3ba1c14e30288","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3568434392717104","idStr":"3568434392717104"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"read","listText":"read","text":"read","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9071907129","repostId":"1116439526","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1116439526","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1657425774,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1116439526?lang=en_US&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-07-10 12:02","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Tesla’s China Sales Increase Provides Little Substance","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1116439526","media":"InvestorPlace","summary":"Don't letTesla's(NASDAQ:TSLA) latest China sales report fool you. This stock still has a long way to drop!Tesla's broad-based sales are declining for the first time in two years. The U.S. Treasury yield curve implies that contractionary monetary policies could wane on durable goods.Tesla is overvalued and exhibits unfavorable beta sensitivity.Tesla(NASDAQ:TSLA) surprised the market with its June preliminary deliveries report, which unveiled a 1.42x month-over-month increase in Chinese regional sales. Regionally, the electric vehicle giant sold more than 78,000 vehicles last month, a 1.35x year-over-year increase. Many investors are likely to jump on a recovery play as the company’s sales recovery could be misinterpreted for early-stage momentum. However, it’s necessary to recognize that Tesla’s China sales could be a temporary uptick as regional political risk remains elevated. In addition, TSLA stock has significant valuation issues, causing the current market environment to act unkindly toward it. Moreover, Tesla’s beta sensitivity means that it could be one of the major losers if a bear market persists.Generally speaking, I believe TSLA stock is overhyped and set for further declines. Let’s dive deeper into it!Tesla’s Prospective SalesInvestors shouldn’t be overwhelmed by TSLA’s latest China sales surge. Much of the sales have to do with the supply-side, where factories were allowed to produce again after certain pandemic restrictions were lifted. As such, sales proliferated. Additionally, Chinese pandemic lockdown policies have been inconsistent, to say the least. Thus, the question beckons whether Tesla’s China sales are sustainable in the long haul.Furthermore, Tesla’s broad-based sales are taking a dip. The firm’s second-quarter sales report conveyed a decline in quarterly sales for the first time in two years. Tesla produced 258,000 vehicles in the quarter and delivered 254,659, reconciling to a 17.9% year-over-year decrease. Although much of the firm’s receding sales figure was down to production constraints, there’s much reason to believe that the economic climate is taking its toll on consumers.I want to elaborate on the economy and what it means for TSLA stock. The U.S. Treasury Yield Curve implies that interest rates could settle above the 3% level before declining again. This means that the leading consumer economy in the world will be subject to contractionary monetary policies, which could see global consumer spending power wane. Moreover, the contraction of economic growth will likely affect the automotive industry as durable goods sales negatively correlate with rising interest rates. As such, Tesla could see its five-year compound annual growth rate of 48.72% retrace to a growth trend more stationary to gross domestic product growth soon.Price Level Concerns With TSLA StockUsing relative valuation metrics to assess growth stocks usually isn’t prudent. Nonetheless, whenever a bear market appears, it is probable that risk-averse investors will sell their overvalued assets first. TSLA stock is trading at11.29xits sales, 52.32x its cash flow, and 77.09x its earnings. Thus, it is safe to say that we’re looking at an overvalued stock here.Additionally, TSLA stock’s high beta status could coalesce with its poor valuation metrics to cause a tremendous drawdown. Tesla’s beta coefficient of 2.13 means that it exhibits excess sensitivity to the broader market, which is exactly what you do not want in a bear market. So, all matters considered, I think TSLA stock is a strong sell!","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"TSLA":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1121,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9045974052,"gmtCreate":1656555131076,"gmtModify":1676535853252,"author":{"id":"3568434392717104","authorId":"3568434392717104","name":"游民一主","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/aaef2ad09df503da07f3ba1c14e30288","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3568434392717104","idStr":"3568434392717104"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Read","listText":"Read","text":"Read","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9045974052","repostId":"1189230340","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1189230340","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1656547651,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1189230340?lang=en_US&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-06-30 08:07","market":"sg","language":"en","title":"Soft Start Expected For Singapore Stock Market","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1189230340","media":"RTTNews","summary":"The Singapore stock market on Wednesday snapped the three-day winning streak in which it had improve","content":"

The Singapore stock market on Wednesday snapped the three-day winning streak in which it had improved more than 45 points or 1.6 percent. This was because creditors received payment, in dollars, of Russian bond coupons which fell due this week, two market sources told Reuters on Thursday.

The S&P 500, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Nasdaq registered their biggest 3-session percentage gain since early November 2020 after the reports boosted risk appetites in a market already benefiting from bargain hunting. The S&P 500 also witnessed its third straight day of more than 1% advances.

The Fed had raised interest rates by a quarter of a percentage point on Wednesday as expected and forecast an aggressive plan for further hikes while policymakers also trimmed economic growth projections for the year.

The Russian payment news and a breaking of technical decline lines "to the upside" in indices, including the S&P and the Nasdaq, all boosted stocks, according to Michael James, managing director of equity trading at Wedbush Securities.

"It's giving investors an increased level of cautious optimism which is a change from the significant pessimism we've been experiencing since early January," said James.

"People have gotten more comfortable with the fact rates are going higher. This has been talked about ad nauseum by Chairman (Jerome) Powell since early December," he said. The digital payment company, formerly known as Square, has emerged as a leader in the fintech space. Its earnings report for this quarter wasn’t all positive, but it was enough to send SQ stock up in after-hours trading yesterday. While shares have been turbulent today, analysts remain bullish following the earnings report, foreseeing better things ahead for the company. What’s Happening With SQ StockAs noted, SQ stock did not rise after yesterday’s call until markets had closed. Extended trading hours brought a 10% surge, but today, shares are back in the red. SQ began today by falling 9% but is already moving upward. As of this writing, it is only down 4% for the day and looks poised to pull back into the green soon.It makes sense that SQ would be volatile after the earnings report brought both good and bad news. However, it is clear that the good far outweighs the bad as far as analysts are concerned. Let’s take a look at the factors at play here. Why It MattersThe less-than-positive news is that Block did not meet expectations for revenue or earnings for the previous quarter. While that’s never a great sign for investors, the company did issue positive signals for its Cash App arm. Block’s gross profit for the mobile wallet system was$578 million, a figure that exceeded Wall Street expectations. And that number isn’t even including profit from Afterpay, an Australian buy now pay later (BNPL) app recently acquired by Block.Another negative headwind that Block has been facing lately is the falling of cryptocurrency prices. Indeed, Bitcoin(BTC-USD) prices are plunging today, and many other cryptos are following. The market selloff that sent many tech stocks down yesterday has spread to digital assets, and risk-averse investors are backing off crypto plays. As weakening demand for crypto pushes prices down, companies like Block will be pushed down with it. However, most of Wall Street hasn’t soured on SQ stock.Prior to the earnings report, SQ received two analyst upgrades. Since the report, it has received more. Mayank Tandon of Needhamrecently reiterated a “buy” rating and set a price target of $135. Mizuho Securities analyst Dan Dolev remains bullish on SQ, maintaining his “buy” rating and setting a $215 price target. Mark Palmer of BTIG isn’t quite so optimistic, but he also reiterated a “buy” rating and assigned SQ aprice target of $175. The TipRanks analyst rating consensus is that SQ stock is a “strong buy,” with 30 analysts maintaining buy ratings. In a note to investors, analyst Ramsey El-Assal of Barclays credited Cash App with being the “standout of Q1.” The mobile payments acquisition may be what saves the company. What It MeansClearly, Wall Street is choosing to see the big picture when it comes to SQ stock. They have plenty of reason to. As noted on the call, “Cash App generated $624 million of gross profit in the first quarter, an increase of 26% year-over-year and 94% on a three-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) basis.”There’s no reason to expect that these growth trends won’t continue throughout the current quarter and beyond. And with the addition of Afterpay, Block will have another dynamic growth driver, particularly in international markets. SQ stock should definitely be on the radar of investors looking for bullish fintech plays.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"SQ":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":397,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9087264330,"gmtCreate":1651017888164,"gmtModify":1676534833840,"author":{"id":"3568434392717104","authorId":"3568434392717104","name":"游民一主","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/aaef2ad09df503da07f3ba1c14e30288","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3568434392717104","idStr":"3568434392717104"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"read","listText":"read","text":"read","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9087264330","repostId":"2230944480","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":890,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9012949565,"gmtCreate":1649283938362,"gmtModify":1676534481994,"author":{"id":"3568434392717104","authorId":"3568434392717104","name":"游民一主","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/aaef2ad09df503da07f3ba1c14e30288","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3568434392717104","idStr":"3568434392717104"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Good","listText":"Good","text":"Good","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9012949565","repostId":"1162298556","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1162298556","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1649259004,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1162298556?lang=en_US&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-04-06 23:30","market":"us","language":"en","title":"These Companies Can Ride Out Inflation","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1162298556","media":"Barron's","summary":"The Key to Surviving Inflation is ‘Pricing Power.’ These Companies Have It in Spades.","content":"

The S&P 500’s overall profit margin hit a record in 2021. But that’s old news, and the current environment is much more challenging. A point of differentiation for companies in 2022 will be the ability to keep profit margins intact or growing despite elevated inflation and slowing economic growth. Their stocks should outperform.

Companies can achieve pricing power in several different ways. A business can sell a good or service that’s vital to customers or limited in supply, giving them no option but to pay up—the product has low price elasticity, to put it in economic terms. That could be gasoline at the only station for miles, toilet paper at the grocery store, or accounting services during tax season.

The fewer direct competitors has a company has, the greater its ability to set prices. A strong brand that has particular affinity or loyalty from customers can also lead to greater pricing power. Think of the typically higher price per unit for Procter & Gamble’s (ticker: PG) Tide laundry detergent versus the equivalent store brand.

A company can also innovate and improve its offerings, increasing prices as it rolls out the upgraded offerings. If the price hikes exceed the cost of the improvements, that’s pricing power. It’s common in new versions of software, pharmaceuticals and medical devices, semiconductors, and other high tech goods and services.

Finally, companies can expand their profit margins by becoming more efficient and productive, or by leveraging economies of scale. That brings down the cost of goods sold per unit produced, and increases profits without raising prices.

Companies with pricing power are particularly attractive for the current environment, says Eric Schoenstein, chief investment officer of Jensen Investment Management.

Inflation is running at four-decade highs, affecting businesses’ input costs—investors will want to own those companies that can pass along that inflation. The new inflation dynamic comes just as economic expansion is waning, suggesting slower GDP growth ahead. Stocks of companies that can maintain and increase their profit margins in 2022 should be in demand.

“There are so many cost pressures out there these days,” says Schoenstein, whose Oregon-based firm manages about $14.5 billion. “We’re trying to find businesses that have resilience through those difficult circumstances. The ones that have already been tested and come out the other side should have the ability to do it again.”

Barron’s screened for S&P 500 companies that grew their gross margin (revenue minus the cost of goods sold, divided by revenue) from 2020 to 2021 as the economy rebounded, but also had rising, positive gross margins in at least the three years before the Covid-19 pandemic. Those that were best able to demonstrate pricing power in a 2% annual inflation environment should be better set up to do it when inflation is running above 7% too. But that’s old news, and the current environment is much more challenging. A point of differentiation for companies in 2022 will be the ability to keep profit margins intact or growing despite elevated inflation and slowing economic growth. Their stocks should outperform.Companies can achieve pricing power in several different ways. Think of the typically higher price per unit for Procter & Gamble’s (ticker: PG) Tide laundry detergent versus the equivalent store brand.A company can also innovate and improve its offerings, increasing prices as it rolls out the upgraded offerings. That brings down the cost of goods sold per unit produced, and increases profits without raising prices.Companies with pricing power are particularly attractive for the current environment, says Eric Schoenstein, chief investment officer of Jensen Investment Management.Inflation is running at four-decade highs, affecting businesses’ input costs—investors will want to own those companies that can pass along that inflation. The new inflation dynamic comes just as economic expansion is waning, suggesting slower GDP growth ahead. Stocks of companies that can maintain and increase their profit margins in 2022 should be in demand.“There are so many cost pressures out there these days,” says Schoenstein, whose Oregon-based firm manages about $14.5 billion. “We’re trying to find businesses that have resilience through those difficult circumstances. The ones that have already been tested and come out the other side should have the ability to do it again.”Barron’s screened for S&P 500 companies that grew their gross margin (revenue minus the cost of goods sold, divided by revenue) from 2020 to 2021 as the economy rebounded, but also had rising, positive gross margins in at least the three years before the Covid-19 pandemic. Those that were best able to demonstrate pricing power in a 2% annual inflation environment should be better set up to do it when inflation is running above 7% too. The companies must also have been free cash flow positive in 2020 and 2021, demonstrating their businesses’ resilience through an economic downturn. The screen yielded 27 names.
