The post, the first from the account in three years, also showed a position of 120,000 GameStop June 21 call options at a strike price of $20, worth $65.7 million at Monday's close. Call options convey the right to buy shares at a fixed price in the future.

Reuters was unable to independently verify if the Reddit post was made by Keith Gill or if the positions disclosed were authentic.

However, Trade Alert data showed the number of open contracts in GameStop soared to 145,000 by the end of May, from just about 15,000 on May 19. And larger losses of around 5% to 8% in market leaders Apple(NASDAQ:AAPL) and Tesla(NASDAQ:TSLA) made agreeable sense to investors as well.

But before you point fingers at fearful and deafening macro developments driving others on Wall Street crazy, it’s simply time to acknowledge, avoid or even short a GME stock whose siren song has lost its voice.

GME Stock Is Still King, Without a Court

Inflation. Rising interest rates. Poor fundamentals. When some investors discuss GameStop’s opportunity to move forward, those items invariably are a big piece of the conversation. And it’s usually a message that’s negative.

I can’t fault the caution or outright bearishness. That seems especially true given a fledgling brick-and-mortar retail gaming business that’s past its prime and attempting to pivot into something more 21st century featuring a larger digital presence, crypto, non-fungible assets (NFTs) and, who knows, maybe even an angle in the metaverse? Apparently.

So, yeah, Wednesday’s CPI data obviously has a place in any dialogue regarding GME stock.

But it would be reckless to ignore the impact other chatter known as“mentions”or lack thereof, in the investment forum of Reddit’s r/WallStreetBets. It’s that activity among a subset of aggressively bullish traders known as apes that made GME stock a household name over the past year.

GME stock mentions are still a thing and GameStop remains the king of memes played by Redditors. But it certainly doesn’t hold court like it did.

On Wednesday in fact, CPI mentions of around 1,000 took top honors on WallStreetBets. By comparison, GME stock was in sixth place with about 180 remarks and roughly 1% of what the real“Gamestonk!!”Siren song remains mostly about.

GME Stock Bottom Is a Bluff

Source: Charts by TradingView

Not only are the wildly frisky days of tweets being retweeted and tweeted again as mentions responsible for GME stock’s legendary short squeezes largely over, but those infamous diamond hands have been replaced by a 2-7 off suit in no position to bluff.

Technically, GME stock could be tempting some traders into buying shares as it challenges its March low. It’s a classic scenario which could play out as a bullish double bottom pattern. But don’t expect GameStop’s short interest of 20% to blink, let alone run for cover.

Not only does a weak-looking stochastics warn that buying GME stock and profiting from the pattern is a longshot, but there’s no price confirmation. On the provided weekly chart that would require an impressive bounce in its own right of nearly 50%!

But even on the daily time frame, buying a volatile double bottom (if the pattern receives technical confirmation) requires too much faith in a meme stock movement that has seen its heyday and one further challenged by today’s risk-off environment.

GameStop Takeaway

So if buying GameStop has the deck stacked against it, a short should make sense, right? It does. And with shares still commanding a $7.5 billion market cap and GME more than four-fold higher than 2021’s low, there’s room to play it bearishly alongside GameStop’s short interest.

Appreciably, shorting GME shares remains a riskier proposition given its day-to-day volatility or the possibility of a muted short squeeze. But an out-of-the-money bear put spread can help with those types of challenges.

A vertical of this kind limits and vastly reduces unwanted upside exposure if GameStop rallies. Conversely, the strategy can generate outsized profits compared to an equivalent short stock position if GME trades lower.

As with anything, there’s compromises. Among other things, with this sort of strategy returns aren’t maximized until expiration. And in the interim when trying to capture profits or further minimize contained losses, GME’s volatility can make that sort of disadvantage look more significant.

But ultimately, a bear put spread’s pros far outweigh the cons in trading GameStop more smartly than shorting shares.

","source":"lsy1606302653667","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
GameStop Stock Should Be Avoided or Shorted
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nGameStop Stock Should Be Avoided or Shorted\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-05-13 10:42 GMT+8 InvestorPlace\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
GameStop(GME) is still top among Redditors, but shorts have the advantage.GME stock’s price chart is at risk of more significant failure.Investors should avoid GME stock or consider a bear put spread....
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"GME":"游戏驿站"},"source_url":"https://investorplace.com/2022/05/gamestop-stock-should-be-avoided-or-shorted/","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1170782959","content_text":"GameStop(GME) is still top among Redditors, but shorts have the advantage.GME stock’s price chart is at risk of more significant failure.Investors should avoid GME stock or consider a bear put spread.Stocks were down big Wednesday and GameStop(NYSE:GME) followed suit as GME stock retreated by 13% with sky-high inflation and increasingly at-risk consumers a theme being played across financial newsfeeds. An ugly 2022 for much of Wall Street just got a good deal uglier yesterday. Apparently. So, yeah, Wednesday’s CPI data obviously has a place in any dialogue regarding GME stock. But it would be reckless to ignore the impact other chatter known as“mentions”or lack thereof, in the investment forum of Reddit’s r/WallStreetBets. It’s that activity among a subset of aggressively bullish traders known as apes that made GME stock a household name over the past year.GME stock mentions are still a thing and GameStop remains the king of memes played by Redditors. But it certainly doesn’t hold court like it did.On Wednesday in fact, CPI mentions of around 1,000 took top honors on WallStreetBets. By comparison, GME stock was in sixth place with about 180 remarks and roughly 1% of what the real“Gamestonk!!”Siren song remains mostly about.GME Stock Bottom Is a BluffSource: Charts by TradingViewNot only are the wildly frisky days of tweets being retweeted and tweeted again as mentions responsible for GME stock’s legendary short squeezes largely over, but those infamous diamond hands have been replaced by a 2-7 off suit in no position to bluff.Technically, GME stock could be tempting some traders into buying shares as it challenges its March low. On the provided weekly chart that would require an impressive bounce in its own right of nearly 50%!But even on the daily time frame, buying a volatile double bottom (if the pattern receives technical confirmation) requires too much faith in a meme stock movement that has seen its heyday and one further challenged by today’s risk-off environment.GameStop TakeawaySo if buying GameStop has the deck stacked against it, a short should make sense, right? It does. And with shares still commanding a $7.5 billion market cap and GME more than four-fold higher than 2021’s low, there’s room to play it bearishly alongside GameStop’s short interest.Appreciably, shorting GME shares remains a riskier proposition given its day-to-day volatility or the possibility of a muted short squeeze. But an out-of-the-money bear put spread can help with those types of challenges.A vertical of this kind limits and vastly reduces unwanted upside exposure if GameStop rallies. But ultimately, a bear put spread’s pros far outweigh the cons in trading GameStop more smartly than shorting shares.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":216,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9030575453,"gmtCreate":1645769844575,"gmtModify":1676534062764,"author":{"id":"3569449221525925","authorId":"3569449221525925","name":"Benjee","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3569449221525925","authorIdStr":"3569449221525925"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"NFT MARKETPLACE LETS F GO!!! However, retail investors have bid up the stock, and shares are more than double their May low of $136.50. Meanwhile, in the first two hours of June 8, the price has risen nearly 17% to a high of $344.66 and then dropped even lower than its starting price.
\n
Many investors are hoping that a digital transformation will help the company mount a much-needed turnaround — GameStop has a long-term vision of transforming from a brick-and-mortar retail company into a digital enterprise.
\n
However, this is easier said than done.
\n
As I have mentionedin prior articles, GameStop was struggling long before the pandemic. The top line is consistently declining over the last five years as it tries to keep up withSony(NYSE:SONY),Microsoft(NASDAQ:MSFT), andAmazon(NASDAQ:AMZN), competitors who are increasingly relying on digital innovation for their future success. Not the case when it comes to GME.
\n
Hence, even though the temptation to join in is there, I will still advise you to stay miles away from this one.
\n
Flawed Fundamentals
\n
Through the end of 2020, GameStop’s sales reportedlydropped more than 30% per quarter, dropping in 10 out of 11 of its previous quarters. In the last decade, the video game retailer has had several years with negative revenue growth. If we take a look at the data from the last 12 quarters, GME has reported a “positive” surprisejust four times. GME had an operating income of $648 million in 2015. Last year, the company was sitting at a $238 million operating loss.
\n
In many ways, GME reminds me ofDish Network’s(NASDAQ:DISH) Blockbuster. There was a time when it looked like the home movie provider could do no wrong. However, it has become a cautionary tale of not evolving with the times. In 2004 then CEO of Blockbuster John Antioco understood the need to invest in an online platform. However, he faced stiff opposition from activist investor Carl Icahn who disagreed and removed him. In five years, the company was bankrupt.
\n
Understandably, if GME wants to avoid this future, it must think outside of the box and focus on building its digital platform. The good thing is that when George E. Sherman took the helm as GameStop’s new CEO in April 2019, he had two things in mind: reducing costs on the brick-and-mortar business and expanding the digital platform.
\n
The strategy is working. On Jan. 11, the video gamereportedworldwide sales results reflecting a 4.8% increase in comparable-store sales and a 309% increase in e-commerce sales.
\n
But the company’s e-commerce setup still does not compare in any way to Amazon or Sony.
\n
Beginning of the End
\n
The biggest question surrounding GME stock is whether it is best to count your blessings and exit. Shares are still up over 80% in a month, so Redditors still like this stock — GME andAMC(NYSE:AMC) have traded spots several times for the most popular choice among members of the platform.
\n
However, you have to ask yourself where GME stock will be in five years. Our very own Chris Markochwrote a great articleaboutDisney(NYSE:DIS). He wrote, “If you had purchased shares of DIS stock on Jan. 7, 2000 and never sold your shares, you are sitting on a share price gain of over 470%. That doesn’t include any dividend gains you may have reinvested over that time.”
\n
In the article, he highlights how Disney did not sit on its haunches and has transformed itself into one of the biggest conglomerates in the world.
\n
Although new GME management deserves credit for pivoting the company into a new direction, it will take time to alleviate the issues that ail the video game retailer and move forward with a coherent strategy. Reddit enthusiasm notwithstanding, a lot of work still needs to be done before GME stock is a viable investment again.
\n
My Final Word
\n
For a long time now, I have been advocating against loading up on GME stock because of the flawed fundamentals. But does that mean that another rally is not around the corner? However, retail investors have bid up the stock, and shares are more than double their May low of $136.50. Meanwhile, in the first two hours of June 8, the price has risen nearly 17% to a high of $344.66 and then dropped even lower than its starting price.\nMany investors are hoping that a digital transformation will help the company mount a much-needed turnaround — GameStop has a long-term vision of transforming from a brick-and-mortar retail company into a digital enterprise.\nHowever, this is easier said than done.\nAs I have mentionedin prior articles, GameStop was struggling long before the pandemic. The top line is consistently declining over the last five years as it tries to keep up withSony(NYSE:SONY),Microsoft(NASDAQ:MSFT), andAmazon(NASDAQ:AMZN), competitors who are increasingly relying on digital innovation for their future success. Not the case when it comes to GME.\nHence, even though the temptation to join in is there, I will still advise you to stay miles away from this one.\nFlawed Fundamentals\nThrough the end of 2020, GameStop’s sales reportedlydropped more than 30% per quarter, dropping in 10 out of 11 of its previous quarters. In the last decade, the video game retailer has had several years with negative revenue growth. If we take a look at the data from the last 12 quarters, GME has reported a “positive” surprisejust four times. GME had an operating income of $648 million in 2015. Last year, the company was sitting at a $238 million operating loss.\nIn many ways, GME reminds me ofDish Network’s(NASDAQ:DISH) Blockbuster. In five years, the company was bankrupt.\nUnderstandably, if GME wants to avoid this future, it must think outside of the box and focus on building its digital platform. The good thing is that when George E. Sherman took the helm as GameStop’s new CEO in April 2019, he had two things in mind: reducing costs on the brick-and-mortar business and expanding the digital platform.\nThe strategy is working. On Jan. 11, the video gamereportedworldwide sales results reflecting a 4.8% increase in comparable-store sales and a 309% increase in e-commerce sales.\nBut the company’s e-commerce setup still does not compare in any way to Amazon or Sony.\nBeginning of the End\nThe biggest question surrounding GME stock is whether it is best to count your blessings and exit. Shares are still up over 80% in a month, so Redditors still like this stock — GME andAMC(NYSE:AMC) have traded spots several times for the most popular choice among members of the platform.\nHowever, you have to ask yourself where GME stock will be in five years. Our very own Chris Markochwrote a great articleaboutDisney(NYSE:DIS). He wrote, “If you had purchased shares of DIS stock on Jan. 7, 2000 and never sold your shares, you are sitting on a share price gain of over 470%. That doesn’t include any dividend gains you may have reinvested over that time.”\nIn the article, he highlights how Disney did not sit on its haunches and has transformed itself into one of the biggest conglomerates in the world.\nAlthough new GME management deserves credit for pivoting the company into a new direction, it will take time to alleviate the issues that ail the video game retailer and move forward with a coherent strategy. Reddit enthusiasm notwithstanding, a lot of work still needs to be done before GME stock is a viable investment again.\nMy Final Word\nFor a long time now, I have been advocating against loading up on GME stock because of the flawed fundamentals. But does that mean that another rally is not around the corner? For sure, one cannot say that considering time and again, Redditors have shown their resilience when it comes to this company.\nIn many ways, GME stock has become iconic because of thesupport it has receivedfrom r/WallStreetBets. I do not expect that to change anytime soon. However, is this a stock that you can buy and keep for the next five years? According to the fundamentals, if you do that, it will be a bad decision.\nOn the date of publication, Faizan Farooquedid not have (either directly or indirectly) any positions in the securities mentioned in this article. The opinions expressed in this article are those of the writer, subject to the InvestorPlace.com Publishing Guidelines.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":458,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"hots":[{"id":9030305414,"gmtCreate":1645626215997,"gmtModify":1676534046451,"author":{"id":"3569449221525925","authorId":"3569449221525925","name":"Benjee","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3569449221525925","authorIdStr":"3569449221525925"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$GameStop(GME)$[666] ","listText":"$GameStop(GME)$[666] ","text":"$GameStop(GME)$[666]","images":[{"img":"https://static.itradeup.com/news/c0eb977730356e90a4d24350c56fad59","width":"1284","height":"2538"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9030305414","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1116,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9920282844,"gmtCreate":1670503857989,"gmtModify":1676538381411,"author":{"id":"3569449221525925","authorId":"3569449221525925","name":"Benjee","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3569449221525925","authorIdStr":"3569449221525925"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Short it then, I'll buy cheap","listText":"Short it then, I'll buy cheap","text":"Short it then, I'll buy cheap","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9920282844","repostId":"2289086417","repostType":2,"repost":{"id":"2289086417","kind":"highlight","pubTimestamp":1670501916,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2289086417?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-12-08 20:18","market":"us","language":"en","title":"The GameStop Turnaround Promise Is Failing","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2289086417","media":"Yahoo Finance","summary":"GameStop Chairman Ryan Cohen and CEO Matt Furlong promised to turn the gaming retailer into one of o","content":"

GameStop Chairman Ryan Cohen and CEO Matt Furlong promised to turn the gaming retailer into one of operational excellence and amazing store experiences while cashing in on new opportunities like crypto and NFTs.

More than a year into their collective and rather secretive leadership, the entire experiment is beginning to look like an utter failure — underscoring longtime Wall Street concerns about the company's business model such as too many costly physical stores in dying malls and shifts to digital gaming.

Not helping GameStop's turnaround efforts is a complete crash in the once thriving digital asset market that Cohen and Furlong were banking on (see: the NFT market crash or GameStop's strategic partnership with now-defunct FTX).

The realities of this underwhelming turnaround story were on grand display in GameStop's third quarter earnings out Wednesday evening.
For sure, one cannot say that considering time and again, Redditors have shown their resilience when it comes to this company.
\n
In many ways, GME stock has become iconic because of thesupport it has receivedfrom r/WallStreetBets. I do not expect that to change anytime soon. However, is this a stock that you can buy and keep for the next five years? Meanwhile, in the first two hours of June 8, the price has risen nearly 17% to a high of $344.66 and then dropped even lower than its starting price.\nMany investors are hoping that a digital transformation will help the company mount a much-needed turnaround — GameStop has a long-term vision of transforming from a brick-and-mortar retail company into a digital enterprise.\nHowever, this is easier said than done.\nAs I have mentionedin prior articles, GameStop was struggling long before the pandemic. The top line is consistently declining over the last five years as it tries to keep up withSony(NYSE:SONY),Microsoft(NASDAQ:MSFT), andAmazon(NASDAQ:AMZN), competitors who are increasingly relying on digital innovation for their future success. Not the case when it comes to GME.\nHence, even though the temptation to join in is there, I will still advise you to stay miles away from this one.\nFlawed Fundamentals\nThrough the end of 2020, GameStop’s sales reportedlydropped more than 30% per quarter, dropping in 10 out of 11 of its previous quarters. In the last decade, the video game retailer has had several years with negative revenue growth. If we take a look at the data from the last 12 quarters, GME has reported a “positive” surprisejust four times. GME had an operating income of $648 million in 2015. Last year, the company was sitting at a $238 million operating loss.\nIn many ways, GME reminds me ofDish Network’s(NASDAQ:DISH) Blockbuster. There was a time when it looked like the home movie provider could do no wrong. However, it has become a cautionary tale of not evolving with the times. In 2004 then CEO of Blockbuster John Antioco understood the need to invest in an online platform. However, he faced stiff opposition from activist investor Carl Icahn who disagreed and removed him. In five years, the company was bankrupt.\nUnderstandably, if GME wants to avoid this future, it must think outside of the box and focus on building its digital platform. The good thing is that when George E. Sherman took the helm as GameStop’s new CEO in April 2019, he had two things in mind: reducing costs on the brick-and-mortar business and expanding the digital platform.\nThe strategy is working. On Jan. 11, the video gamereportedworldwide sales results reflecting a 4.8% increase in comparable-store sales and a 309% increase in e-commerce sales.\nBut the company’s e-commerce setup still does not compare in any way to Amazon or Sony.\nBeginning of the End\nThe biggest question surrounding GME stock is whether it is best to count your blessings and exit. Shares are still up over 80% in a month, so Redditors still like this stock — GME andAMC(NYSE:AMC) have traded spots several times for the most popular choice among members of the platform.\nHowever, you have to ask yourself where GME stock will be in five years. Our very own Chris Markochwrote a great articleaboutDisney(NYSE:DIS). He wrote, “If you had purchased shares of DIS stock on Jan. 7, 2000 and never sold your shares, you are sitting on a share price gain of over 470%. That doesn’t include any dividend gains you may have reinvested over that time.”\nIn the article, he highlights how Disney did not sit on its haunches and has transformed itself into one of the biggest conglomerates in the world.\nAlthough new GME management deserves credit for pivoting the company into a new direction, it will take time to alleviate the issues that ail the video game retailer and move forward with a coherent strategy. Reddit enthusiasm notwithstanding, a lot of work still needs to be done before GME stock is a viable investment again.\nMy Final Word\nFor a long time now, I have been advocating against loading up on GME stock because of the flawed fundamentals. But does that mean that another rally is not around the corner? For sure, one cannot say that considering time and again, Redditors have shown their resilience when it comes to this company.\nIn many ways, GME stock has become iconic because of thesupport it has receivedfrom r/WallStreetBets. I do not expect that to change anytime soon. However, is this a stock that you can buy and keep for the next five years? According to the fundamentals, if you do that, it will be a bad decision.\nOn the date of publication, Faizan Farooquedid not have (either directly or indirectly) any positions in the securities mentioned in this article.The opinions expressed in this article are those of the writer, subject to the InvestorPlace.com Publishing Guidelines.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":458,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
