Yield","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2406827942","media":"The Smart Investor","summary":"We present four stocks that pay out a higher dividend yield than 2023’s star performer Sembcorp Industries.","content":"

Sembcorp Industries Ltd (SGX: U96) was one of several blue-chip stocks that posted a strong share price performance last year.

The utility and urban solutions provider chalked up a total return of more than 60% in 2023.

However, when it comes to the group’s dividend yield, it stood at just 2.2%.

This level of yield is lower than Singapore’s core inflation, which hovered at 3.3% in December 2023.

If you are an income investor, here are four stocks that sport a much better dividend yield than Sembcorp Industries.

United Overseas Bank Ltd (SGX: U11)

United Overseas Bank, or UOB, is the smallest of the three local banks by market capitalisation.

The lender reported a robust set of earnings for the third quarter of 2023 (3Q 2023), buoyed by the sharp surge in interest rates which benefitted its net interest income.

For the first nine months of 2023 (9M 2023), total income rose 28% year on year to S$10.5 billion on the back of a 26% year-on-year increase in net interest income.

Operating profit climbed 34% year on year to S$6.2 billion while net profit improved by 26% year on year to S$4.3 billion.

Back when the bank released its first-half results, an interim dividend of S$0.85 was paid out.

Coupled with 2022’s final dividend of S$0.75, the total trailing 12-month dividend stood at S$1.60.

Shares of UOB provide a trailing dividend yield of 5.7%.

The bank had just completed the integration of Citigroup’s (NYSE: C) consumer banking business in Indonesia in November 2023, which should benefit UOB’s franchise for 2024.

UOB gave a bright outlook for this year as it projects mid-single-digit loan growth and double-digit fee income growth.

Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd (SGX: S63)

Singapore Technologies Engineering, or STE, is a technology, defence, and engineering group with customers in the aerospace, smart city, defence, and public security segments.

The group paid out a quarterly dividend of S$0.04 per share, bringing the annualised dividend to S$0.16.

At a share price of S$3.85, the engineering group has a forward dividend yield of 4.2%.

STE reported strong revenue growth for 9M 2023, rising 12% year on year to S$7.3 billion.

All three of the group’s divisions saw year-on-year revenue growth if the US Marine business was excluded from the financial numbers.

For 9M 2023, the total contract wins amounted to S$11.7 billion, bringing STE’s order book to a high of S$27.5 billion as of 30 September 2023.

The engineering group also has capacity expansion initiatives including the opening of the second of four airframe maintenance hangars in Florida and the investment in airframe maintenance hangars in Changi Creek, Singapore.

Raffles Medical Group (SGX: BSL)

Raffles Medical Group, or RMG, is an integrated healthcare provider with a network of three hospitals and more than 100 multi-disciplinary clinics offering a wide range of medical, dental, and diagnostic services.

The group announced a strong set of earnings for 2022 and paid out a first and final dividend of S$0.038.

Shares of the healthcare provider yield 3.7% at the last done share price of S$1.02.

RMG reported a downbeat set of earnings for 9M 2023 as the discontinuation of COVID-19 activities affected the profitability of its Singapore operations.

Revenue fell by 14.7% year on year to S$532.4 million while net profit tumbled 25.6% year on year to S$72.8 million.

Despite the weak result, the healthcare group still maintained a healthy net cash balance of S$239.7 million as of 30 September 2023.

Executive Chairman Dr Loo Choon Yong says that RMG will focus on growing and expanding its patient base by tailoring healthcare solutions for its patients while improving the operating leverage of its existing businesses.

Sheng Siong Group Ltd (SGX: OV8)

Sheng Siong is one of Singapore’s largest supermarket operators with 69 outlets across the island.

The group also offers more than 1,600 products under its 23 house brands ranging from food products to paper goods.

The retailer paid out a total trailing 12-month dividend of S$0.0612, giving its shares a trailing dividend yield of 3.9%.

Sheng Siong reported a mixed set of results for 9M 2023 partly because of a high base in 2022 along with higher staff and utility costs.

Although revenue rose 2.6% year on year to S$1.04 billion, net profit dipped by 0.1% year on year to S$100.3 million.

The supermarket operator churned out a higher level of free cash flow for 9M 2023 at S$125.1 million compared with S$104.2 million in the prior year.

Looking ahead, the group seeks further growth through the continuous expansion of its store presence in Singapore.

With the HDB planning to release five more tenders for shop space in the next six months, Sheng Siong has ample opportunities to bid for them and may win some of these tenders.

","source":"thesmartinvestor_highlight","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; charset=utf-8\" Industries Ltd (SGX: U96) was one of several blue-chip stocks that posted a strong share price performance last year. The utility and urban solutions provider chalked up a total return of more than 60% in 2023.However, when it comes to the group’s dividend yield, it stood at just 2.2%.This level of yield is lower than Singapore’s core inflation, which hovered at 3.3% in December 2023. If you are an income investor, here are four stocks that sport a much better dividend yield than Sembcorp Industries.United Overseas Bank Ltd (SGX: U11)United Overseas Bank, or UOB, is the smallest of the three local banks by market capitalisation. The lender reported a robust set of earnings for the third quarter of 2023 (3Q 2023), buoyed by the sharp surge in interest rates which benefitted its net interest income. For the first nine months of 2023 (9M 2023), total income rose 28% year on year to S$10.5 billion on the back of a 26% year-on-year increase in net interest income.Operating profit climbed 34% year on year to S$6.2 billion while net profit improved by 26% year on year to S$4.3 billion.Back when the bank released its first-half results, an interim dividend of S$0.85 was paid out.Coupled with 2022’s final dividend of S$0.75, the total trailing 12-month dividend stood at S$1.60.Shares of UOB provide a trailing dividend yield of 5.7%.The bank had just completed the integration of Citigroup’s (NYSE: C) consumer banking business in Indonesia in November 2023, which should benefit UOB’s franchise for 2024.UOB gave a bright outlook for this year as it projects mid-single-digit loan growth and double-digit fee income growth.Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd (SGX: S63)Singapore Technologies Engineering, or STE, is a technology, defence, and engineering group with customers in the aerospace, smart city, defence, and public security segments. The group paid out a quarterly dividend of S$0.04 per share, bringing the annualised dividend to S$0.16.At a share price of S$3.85, the engineering group has a forward dividend yield of 4.2%.STE reported strong revenue growth for 9M 2023, rising 12% year on year to S$7.3 billion. All three of the group’s divisions saw year-on-year revenue growth if the US Marine business was excluded from the financial numbers. For 9M 2023, the total contract wins amounted to S$11.7 billion, bringing STE’s order book to a high of S$27.5 billion as of 30 September 2023.The engineering group also has capacity expansion initiatives including the opening of the second of four airframe maintenance hangars in Florida and the investment in airframe maintenance hangars in Changi Creek, Singapore.Raffles Medical Group (SGX: BSL)Raffles Medical Group, or RMG, is an integrated healthcare provider with a network of three hospitals and more than 100 multi-disciplinary clinics offering a wide range of medical, dental, and diagnostic services. The group announced a strong set of earnings for 2022 and paid out a first and final dividend of S$0.038.Shares of the healthcare provider yield 3.7% at the last done share price of S$1.02.RMG reported a downbeat set of earnings for 9M 2023 as the discontinuation of COVID-19 activities affected the profitability of its Singapore operations.Revenue fell by 14.7% year on year to S$532.4 million while net profit tumbled 25.6% year on year to S$72.8 million.Despite the weak result, the healthcare group still maintained a healthy net cash balance of S$239.7 million as of 30 September 2023.Executive Chairman Dr Loo Choon Yong says that RMG will focus on growing and expanding its patient base by tailoring healthcare solutions for its patients while improving the operating leverage of its existing businesses.Sheng Siong Group Ltd (SGX: OV8)Sheng Siong is one of Singapore’s largest supermarket operators with 69 outlets across the island. The group also offers more than 1,600 products under its 23 house brands ranging from food products to paper goods. The retailer paid out a total trailing 12-month dividend of S$0.0612, giving its shares a trailing dividend yield of 3.9%.Sheng Siong reported a mixed set of results for 9M 2023 partly because of a high base in 2022 along with higher staff and utility costs.Although revenue rose 2.6% year on year to S$1.04 billion, net profit dipped by 0.1% year on year to S$100.3 million. The supermarket operator churned out a higher level of free cash flow for 9M 2023 at S$125.1 million compared with S$104.2 million in the prior year.Looking ahead, the group seeks further growth through the continuous expansion of its store presence in Singapore. With the HDB planning to release five more tenders for shop space in the next six months, Sheng Siong has ample opportunities to bid for them and may win some of these tenders.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":290,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":251605106831368,"gmtCreate":1702464342343,"gmtModify":1702464345668,"author":{"id":"3571494102836674","authorId":"3571494102836674","name":"kaikai20","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/763af32f6976114879ca9a89d951acd3","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3571494102836674","authorIdStr":"3571494102836674"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"<a That's obvious when you look at the past. And while history doesn't repeat itself, the factors that caused stocks to perform well over the last century will likely prevail over the next 100 years as well.

But which stocks are the best picks to enable you to make money? Like most investors, I have my own opinion on how to answer that question. Here are my top five stocks to buy in April.

1. Amazon

Amazon (AMZN 0.95%) stands out as one of the most impressive companies in the world, in my view. It has transformed retail and created a huge cloud-hosting market. I like the stock right now for two primary reasons.

<app :collapse_on_load=\"false\" :instrument_id=\"202816\" :show_benchmark_compare=\"false\" amount_change=\"0.96\" average_volume=\"55,577,447\" company_name=\"Amazon.com\" current_price=\"102.06\" daily_high=\"102.38\" daily_low=\"99.80\" default_period=\"YTD\" dividend_yield=\"N/A\" exchange=\"NASDAQ\" fifty_two_week_high=\"158.65\" fifty_two_week_low=\"81.43\" gross_margin=\"43.81\" logo=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/art/companylogos/mark/AMZN.png\" market_cap=\"$1,046B\" pe_ratio=\"48.35\" percent_change=\"0.95\" symbol=\"AMZN\" volume=\"14,697\"></app>

First, I think Amazon Web Services (AWS) still has tremendous growth prospects. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy predicts that AWS's market could expand exponentially over the next 10 to 15 years as organizations shift IT spending from on-premises to the cloud. I'm confident that Jassy is right and that AWS will among the biggest winners from this trend.

Second, Amazon is taking key steps to reduce its costs. The company could be much more profitable if it continues to work to maximize margins. My take is that Amazon's earnings will grow significantly over the next several years.

2. Brookfield Renewable

Few businesses have as clear of a pathway to growth as Brookfield Renewable (BEP -0.03%) (BEPC -1.51%). The demand for renewable energy will almost certainly increase as governments and corporations across the world scramble to reduce carbon emissions.

Brookfield Renewable is in a great position to help address the higher demand for renewable energy. The company's development pipeline includes 110 gigawatts of capacity, more than four times its current capacity of around 25 gigawatts.

I also like Brookfield Renewable's dividend yield of over 4.4%. Of the 12 high-yield dividend stocks in my portfolio, I view Brookfield Renewable as the best of the bunch.

3. Devon Energy

Speaking of great dividends, Devon Energy (DVN -1.16%) currently offers a dividend yield of nearly 9.6%. But should you be worried about the oil producer's two dividend cuts in recent months? I don't think so.

<app :collapse_on_load=\"false\" :instrument_id=\"203351\" :show_benchmark_compare=\"false\" amount_change=\"-0.62\" average_volume=\"12,481,108\" company_name=\"Devon Energy\" current_price=\"52.91\" daily_high=\"53.53\" daily_low=\"52.72\" default_period=\"YTD\" dividend_yield=\"1.51%\" exchange=\"NYSE\" fifty_two_week_high=\"79.40\" fifty_two_week_low=\"44.03\" gross_margin=\"60.03\" logo=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/art/companylogos/mark/DVN.png\" market_cap=\"$35B\" pe_ratio=\"9.92\" percent_change=\"-1.16\" symbol=\"DVN\" volume=\"1,712\"></app>

Devon's dividend has two components -- fixed and variable. The variable portion is based on excess free cash flow. As you might expect for an oil company, excess free cash flow fluctuated with oil prices.

The good news for Devon's dividend (and share price) is that oil prices are likely to rise with Saudi Arabia announcing that it's reducing oil production. I expect that Devon will deliver tremendous total returns at least over the next few years.

4. The Trade Desk

The Trade Desk (TTD 3.77%) ranks as the biggest winner of these five stocks so far in 2023. Shares of the advertising technology leader have soared nearly 36% year to date. Is it too late to buy this high-flying stock? Nope.

<app :collapse_on_load=\"false\" :instrument_id=\"338635\" :show_benchmark_compare=\"false\" amount_change=\"2.21\" average_volume=\"4,823,179\" company_name=\"Trade Desk\" current_price=\"60.85\" daily_high=\"60.96\" daily_low=\"57.17\" default_period=\"YTD\" dividend_yield=\"N/A\" exchange=\"NASDAQ\" fifty_two_week_high=\"76.75\" fifty_two_week_low=\"39.00\" gross_margin=\"82.18\" logo=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/art/companylogos/mark/TTD.png\" market_cap=\"$30B\" pe_ratio=\"290.38\" percent_change=\"3.77\" symbol=\"TTD\" volume=\"125\"></app>

Ad-supported connected TV (CTV) still has tremendous growth ahead. The Trade Desk's platform is ideally suited for helping advertisers buy CTV ads that provide the biggest bang for the buck. Also, only around 10% of the company's advertising spend currently comes from international markets. The Trade Desk has a major opportunity outside of the U.S.

The biggest concern for this stock is that its valuation is at a nose-bleed level. However, I think the premium price tag is worth it based on The Trade Desk's future prospects.

5. Vertex Pharmaceuticals

There's no healthcare stock that I like more right now than Vertex Pharmaceuticals (VRTX -0.09%). The big biotech continues to deliver solid revenue and earnings growth thanks to its cystic fibrosis (CF) drugs. Those therapies currently have no competition in treating the underlying cause of CF. The nearest rival is at best years away from even having a chance at winning regulatory approvals.

Vertex is now one step closer to bringing a new blockbuster to market. The company and its partner, CRISPR Therapeutics, recently completed their submission to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for approval of exa-cel in treating rare blood disorders sickle cell disease and transfusion-dependent beta-thalassemia. Vertex and CRISPR Therapeutics also await European Union approvals in both indications.

Two other pipeline programs could be launched by the end of 2024. Vertex expects to complete late-stage testing for non-opioid pain drug VX-548 by early next year. The company is also evaluating a triple-drug combo in treating CF in late-stage testing. That's obvious when you look at the past. And while history doesn't repeat itself, the factors that caused stocks to perform well over the last century will likely prevail over the next 100 years as well. But which stocks are the best picks to enable you to make money? Like most investors, I have my own opinion on how to answer that question. Here are my top five stocks to buy in April.1. AmazonAmazon (AMZN 0.95%) stands out as one of the most impressive companies in the world, in my view. It has transformed retail and created a huge cloud-hosting market. I like the stock right now for two primary reasons.First, I think Amazon Web Services (AWS) still has tremendous growth prospects. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy predicts that AWS's market could expand exponentially over the next 10 to 15 years as organizations shift IT spending from on-premises to the cloud. I'm confident that Jassy is right and that AWS will among the biggest winners from this trend.Second, Amazon is taking key steps to reduce its costs. The company could be much more profitable if it continues to work to maximize margins. My take is that Amazon's earnings will grow significantly over the next several years. 2. Brookfield RenewableFew businesses have as clear of a pathway to growth as Brookfield Renewable (BEP -0.03%) (BEPC -1.51%). Of the 12 high-yield dividend stocks in my portfolio, I view Brookfield Renewable as the best of the bunch.3. Devon EnergySpeaking of great dividends, Devon Energy (DVN -1.16%) currently offers a dividend yield of nearly 9.6%. But should you be worried about the oil producer's two dividend cuts in recent months? I don't think so.Devon's dividend has two components -- fixed and variable. 4. The Trade DeskThe Trade Desk (TTD 3.77%) ranks as the biggest winner of these five stocks so far in 2023. Shares of the advertising technology leader have soared nearly 36% year to date. Is it too late to buy this high-flying stock? Nope.Ad-supported connected TV (CTV) still has tremendous growth ahead. The Trade Desk's platform is ideally suited for helping advertisers buy CTV ads that provide the biggest bang for the buck. Also, only around 10% of the company's advertising spend currently comes from international markets. The Trade Desk has a major opportunity outside of the U.S.The biggest concern for this stock is that its valuation is at a nose-bleed level. However, I think the premium price tag is worth it based on The Trade Desk's future prospects.5. Vertex PharmaceuticalsThere's no healthcare stock that I like more right now than Vertex Pharmaceuticals (VRTX -0.09%). The big biotech continues to deliver solid revenue and earnings growth thanks to its cystic fibrosis (CF) drugs. Those therapies currently have no competition in treating the underlying cause of CF. The nearest rival is at best years away from even having a chance at winning regulatory approvals.Vertex is now one step closer to bringing a new blockbuster to market. Both products have the potential to generate annual sales of more than $2 billion.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":360,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9941639624,"gmtCreate":1680183357968,"gmtModify":1680183361624,"author":{"id":"3571494102836674","authorId":"3571494102836674","name":"kaikai20","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/763af32f6976114879ca9a89d951acd3","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3571494102836674","authorIdStr":"3571494102836674"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"nice","listText":"nice","text":"nice","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9941639624","repostId":"9941846987","repostType":1,"repost":{"id":9941846987,"gmtCreate":1680157383849,"gmtModify":1680157940653,"author":{"id":"9000000000000641","authorId":"9000000000000641","name":"CyrilDavy","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fd67ba4a6ca5ca66b27af6afcce989dc","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"9000000000000641","authorIdStr":"9000000000000641"},"themes":[],"title":"AMC – Can Outwit Rivals?","htmlText":"AMC StockAMC $AMC Entertainment(AMC)$ Stock is hovering slightly above its yearly low, and its performance as compared to its competitors is not positive. As of now, seven of the 18 Fed officials expect a rate hike to come in 2023, while four think one could happen next year.

Investors happily greeted the news , with the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 both notching intraday records Wednesday following the Fed's announcement. Whether the Fed's policy is similarly auspicious for home buyers or people looking to refinance their existing mortgages remains to be seen.

Since the start of the year, the benchmark rate on the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage has risen more than 40 basis points, according to data from Freddie Mac.

As of Thursday reported. It's the highest level that the benchmark mortgage rate has hit since June of last year.

Meanwhile, the average rates on the 15-year fixed-rate mortgage and the 5-year Treasury-indexed adjustable-rate mortgage both increased by two basis points, to 2.4% and 2.79% respectively.

\"The Fed funds rate itself has no impact on mortgage rates,\" said Tendayi Kapfidze, chief economist at LendingTree $(TREE.UK)$, in explaining the Fed's policy decision didn't stem the rise in mortgage rates this week. The Federal Reserve controls short-term interest rates. But mortgage rates are long term rates, and mortgage lenders take their cues from the bond market when setting the rates they charge to borrowers.

In particular, mortgage rates roughly track the direction of the 10-year Treasury . But even that relationship isn't foolproof. \"This relationship can vary,\" Kapfidze said. \"10-yr Treasury rates were on an upward trend from August 2020, but mortgage rates were still falling until February.\"

Mortgage rates have risen quickly in recent weeks, reaching the highest level since July, as investors grew increasingly concerned about inflation. With Americans now receiving the stimulus checks approved as part of the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, some analysts expect people to rush out and spend that money, causing prices to go up for consumer goods and services.

Still, the Fed's stance and policy decisions could have some influence on mortgage rates, even if the central bank doesn't control them directly. Since the start of the pandemic, the Federal Reserve has ramped up its purchases of mortgage-backed securities in an effort to pump much needed liquidity into the market. Those purchases helped to push rates lower.

\"Reaffirming its commitment to ongoing asset purchases while acknowledging that a tapering is on the horizon at some point -- likely pretty far off -- should help slow the rise of mortgage rates,\" said Danielle Hale, chief economist at Realtor.com. Hale noted that she expects the overall upward trend in mortgage rates to continue.

But if the Fed reverses its policy regarding mortgage-backed securities, rates could quickly rise as lenders face liquidity constraints. Alternatively, if the Fed were to opt to ramp up its purchases of 10-year Treasury notes to stem long-term rates, then mortgage rates could drop, Kapfidze said.

Either way, mortgage rates remain very low by historical standards even if they're now above the 3% mark, and industry experts anticipate that demand for mortgages will remain strong.

The Mortgage Bankers Association \"continues to see a very strong housing market, with mortgage applications to buy a home increasing, even as refinance demand wanes,\" said Mike Fratantoni, the trade organization's chief economist. \"While mortgage rates are likely to move somewhat higher, the purchase market remains on track for a record year.\"
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
The Fed plans to keep interest rates low -- so why do interest rates keep rising?
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nThe Fed plans to keep interest rates low -- so why do interest rates keep rising?\n
\n\n
\n\n\n<div class=\"head\" \">\n\n\n

\n\n
\n
Dow Jones
\n
2021-03-18 22:39
\n
\n\n
\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
Mortgage rates are now at the highest point since June and could go even higher even if the Federal Reserve doesn't change its policy

The Federal Reserve is planning to stay the course in keeping interest rates low -- but that isn't necessarily music to home buyers' ears.

On Wednesday, the Federal Reserve signaled that it won't raise interest rates until 2023 at the earliest, even though some observers have voiced concerns about rising inflation. Alternatively, if the Fed were to opt to ramp up its purchases of 10-year Treasury notes to stem long-term rates, then mortgage rates could drop, Kapfidze said.Either way, mortgage rates remain very low by historical standards even if they're now above the 3% mark, and industry experts anticipate that demand for mortgages will remain strong. The Mortgage Bankers Association \"continues to see a very strong housing market, with mortgage applications to buy a home increasing, even as refinance demand wanes,\" said Mike Fratantoni, the trade organization's chief economist. \"While mortgage rates are likely to move somewhat higher, the purchase market remains on track for a record year.\"","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":70,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":148980660,"gmtCreate":1625915221250,"gmtModify":1703750863151,"author":{"id":"3571494102836674","authorId":"3571494102836674","name":"kaikai20","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/763af32f6976114879ca9a89d951acd3","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3571494102836674","idStr":"3571494102836674"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"interesting pls like and comment on my post thanks for the heads up//@小镇做T家:没毛病。 The pandemic was intensifying, gridlock paralyzed Washington and millions of families were about to lose crucial benefits.
\n
Fast forward two months, and the economy is still struggling-- but confidence in the recovery is growing, rapidly.
\n
Economists are swiftly upgrading their GDP and unemployment forecasts and pulling forward the date when the Federal Reserve will be able to lift rock-bottom interest rates. Goldman Sachs is predicting the US economy will grow at the fastest clip in more than three decades.
\n
The renewed optimism is being driven by two major factors: the health crisis is easing and Uncle Sam is coming to the rescue with staggering amounts of aid-- hundreds of billions more than seemed to be in the cards just months ago.
\n
After supplying $4 trillion of relief last year, Washington is expected to pump in another $2 trillion of deficit-financed support in 2021, according to Moody's Analytics. That represents more than a quarter of annual US GDP.
\n
\"That is a lot of economic juice,\" Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics, told CNN Business.
\n
The turning point happened last month when Democrats took narrow control of the US Senate by sweeping the runoff races in Georgia. That opened a path for President Joe Biden's $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, which features $1,400 stimulus checks, enhanced unemployment benefits and a $350 billion lifeline to state and local governments.
\n
'Summer mini-boom'
\n
Before the Georgia elections, Zandi didn't think the US economy would return to full employment (a strong labor market with 4% unemployment) until the spring or summer of 2023. Now, he expects that achievement to happen next spring, echoing a forecast by Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.
\n
\"Super-charged fiscal policy\" means the argument for the US economy growing faster than its peers \"seems to get stronger day-by-day,\" economists at Bank of America wrote in a recent report to clients.
\n
Oxford Economics chief US economist Gregory Daco is calling for a \"summer mini-boom\" in the United States and 5.9% GDP growth in 2021.
\n
Likewise, Jefferies economists say \"explosive income growth (courtesy of fiscal stimulus) is likely to propel US GDP 6.4% higher this year and nearly 5% next year.\"
\n
\"If anything, our forecast might be too conservative,\" Jefferies told clients in a recent note, pointing out that its view incorporates just $1 trillion of the Biden plan.
\n
Indeed, Goldman Sachs upgraded its 2021 GDP forecast to 6.8% earlier this week because the Wall Street bank now assumes additional fiscal relief of $1.5 trillion, up from $1.1 trillion previously. If Goldman's prediction comes true, it would be the fastest annual GDP growth for the United States since 1989,according to the St. Louis Fed.
\n
The rosy GDP forecasts are well above what the Federal Reserve is calling for. In December, the Fed expected 2021 GDP growth of just 4.2% and said unemployment wouldn't slip below 4% until 2023.
\n
Double-dip recession averted
\n
The Fed tends to be conservative with its economic forecasts. And, crucially, the Fed forecast was released at a time when political dysfunction in DC was casting a shadow over the US economy.
\n
For months, Republicans and Democrats tried and failed to reach a deal on extending crucial unemployment and eviction benefits scheduled to lapse and providing more forgivable loans to small businesses. And then when a deal was finally reached, former President Donald Trump threatened to blow it up.
\n
At the last minute, Trump signed the $900 billion relief package into law, averting economic disaster.
\n
\"Without that, we would be in a double dip recession,\" said Zandi, the Moody's economist.
\n
Slammed by the pandemic, the US economy limped to the end of 2020 and started this year slowly. In December, employers cut jobs in for the first time since the spring. And the United States added just 49,000 jobs in January.
\n
Jobless claims remain alarmingly high. Another 793,000 Americans filed for first time unemployment benefits last week alone. For context, that is above the worst levels of the Great Recession.
\n
Vaccines to the rescue
\n
But there are glimmers of hope on the pandemic. Although Covid deaths remain unthinkably high, hospitalizations and cases have retreated.
\n
Critically, the rollout of coronavirus vaccines is accelerating. Out of a total of 66 million vaccines distributed, about 70% have been administered, according to Morgan Stanley.
\n
And Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, told NBC News Thursday that the United States may be able to vaccinate most Americans by the middle or end of summer.
\n
All of this has allowed states including California, New York and New Jersey to relax health restrictions crushing restaurants and other small businesses.
\n
That's not to say the pandemic is over. In fact, one risk is that new Covid-19 variants force US states and cities to once again tighten health restrictions.
\n
Low-wage workers are still hurting badly
\n
Against this backdrop, many economists are urging Washington to push ahead with plans for aggressive fiscal stimulus.
\n
\"Foot flat on the accelerator, please,\" Zandi, the Moody's economist said. \"Policymaking 101 says err on the side of doing too much, rather than too little.\"
\n
Doing too little risks worsening America's inequality problem. That's because this recession, more than prior ones, disproportionately hurt low-income workers in hard-hit sectors such as restaurants, childcare and hospitality.
\n
Employment levels of low-wage workers (those making less than $27,000 per year) is still down more than 20%, according to the Opportunity Insights Economic tracker. By contrast, employment levels of those making more than $60,000 per year are above pre-crisis levels.
\n
\"Biden's team is unlikely to break out the champagne over reaching full employment if it isn't evident across income and racial groups,\" economists at Bank of America wrote in a report to clients.
\n
However, Danielle DiMartino Booth, a former Fed official who is now CEO of Quill Intelligence, worries the focus on providing income, instead of investing in infrastructure and reskilling workers, will make the country addicted to stimulus.
\n
\"The economy is going to turn into this dependent patient, always waiting for the next injection,\" Booth said.
\n
'Bring it on'
\n
Some economists, including former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, have warned there is a risk that Washington overheats the economy by injecting too much support.
\n
\"You could have quite the inflation scare in the next few months that will test the bond market and the Fed,\" Booth said.
\n
And that in turn would spook the red-hot stock market.
\n
Fed watchers are moving up their timelines for when the central bank will be able to end its emergency policies.
\n
Citing \"signs of a firmer inflation outlook,\" Goldman Sachs now expects the Fed to start \"tapering\" its asset purchases in early 2022 and to raise interest rates in the first half of 2024.
\n
Zandi isn't losing sleep over inflation, mostly because the United States is far from full employment.
\n
\"It's a vastly overstated worry,\" he said. \"Bring it on. Our biggest problem for more than a decade has been low inflation. Higher inflation would be a high-class problem to have.\"
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
With Biden going big, Wall Street economists are growing bullish on the US economy
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nWith Biden going big, Wall Street economists are growing bullish on the US economy\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-02-16 18:03 GMT+8 CNN Business\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
New York (CNN Business) The Covid-ravaged American economy was on the verge of slipping into a double-dip recession at the end of 2020. In December, the Fed expected 2021 GDP growth of just 4.2% and said unemployment wouldn't slip below 4% until 2023.\nDouble-dip recession averted\nThe Fed tends to be conservative with its economic forecasts. And, crucially, the Fed forecast was released at a time when political dysfunction in DC was casting a shadow over the US economy.\nFor months, Republicans and Democrats tried and failed to reach a deal on extending crucial unemployment and eviction benefits scheduled to lapse and providing more forgivable loans to small businesses. And then when a deal was finally reached, former President Donald Trump threatened to blow it up.\nAt the last minute, Trump signed the $900 billion relief package into law, averting economic disaster.\n\"Without that, we would be in a double dip recession,\" said Zandi, the Moody's economist.\nSlammed by the pandemic, the US economy limped to the end of 2020 and started this year slowly. In December, employers cut jobs in for the first time since the spring. And the United States added just 49,000 jobs in January.\nJobless claims remain alarmingly high. Another 793,000 Americans filed for first time unemployment benefits last week alone. For context, that is above the worst levels of the Great Recession.\nVaccines to the rescue\nBut there are glimmers of hope on the pandemic. Although Covid deaths remain unthinkably high, hospitalizations and cases have retreated.\nCritically, the rollout of coronavirus vaccines is accelerating. Out of a total of 66 million vaccines distributed, about 70% have been administered, according to Morgan Stanley.\nAnd Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert,told NBC News Thursday that the United States may be able to vaccinate most Americans by the middle or end of summer.\nAll of this has allowed states including California, New York and New Jersey to relax health restrictions crushing restaurants and other small businesses.\nThat's not to say the pandemic is over. In fact,one risk is that new Covid-19 variants force US states and cities to once again tighten health restrictions.\nLow-wage workers are still hurting badly\nAgainst this backdrop, many economists are urging Washington to push ahead with plans for aggressive fiscal stimulus.\n\"Foot flat on the accelerator, please,\" Zandi, the Moody's economist said. \"Policymaking 101 says err on the side of doing too much, rather than too little.\"\nDoing too little risks worsening America's inequality problem. That's because this recession, more than prior ones, disproportionately hurt low-income workers in hard-hit sectors such as restaurants, childcare and hospitality.\nEmployment levels of low-wage workers (those making less than $27,000 per year) is still down more than 20%, according to the Opportunity Insights Economic tracker. By contrast, employment levels of those making more than $60,000 per year are above pre-crisis levels.\n\"Biden's team is unlikely to break out the champagne over reaching full employment if it isn't evident across income and racial groups,\" economists at Bank of America wrote in a report to clients.\nHowever, Danielle DiMartino Booth, a former Fed official who is now CEO of Quill Intelligence, worries the focus on providing income, instead of investing in infrastructure and reskilling workers, will make the country addicted to stimulus.\n\"The economy is going to turn into this dependent patient, always waiting for the next injection,\" Booth said.\n'Bring it on'\nSome economists, including former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, have warned there is a risk that Washington overheats the economy by injecting too much support.\n\"You could have quite the inflation scare in the next few months that will test the bond market and the Fed,\" Booth said.\nAnd that in turn would spook the red-hot stock market.\nFed watchers are moving up their timelines for when the central bank will be able to end its emergency policies.\nCiting \"signs of a firmer inflation outlook,\" Goldman Sachs now expects the Fed to start \"tapering\" its asset purchases in early 2022 and to raise interest rates in the first half of 2024.\nZandi isn't losing sleep over inflation, mostly because the United States is far from full employment.\n\"It's a vastly overstated worry,\" he said. \"Bring it on. Our biggest problem for more than a decade has been low inflation. Higher inflation would be a high-class problem to have.\"","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":60,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":173501766,"gmtCreate":1626666781055,"gmtModify":1703763006064,"author":{"id":"3571494102836674","authorId":"3571494102836674","name":"kaikai20","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/763af32f6976114879ca9a89d951acd3","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3571494102836674","idStr":"3571494102836674"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"interesting pls like and comment on my post thanks for the heads up","listText":"interesting pls like and comment on my post thanks for the heads up","text":"interesting pls like and comment on my post thanks for the heads up","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/173501766","repostId":"173254564","repostType":1,"repost":{"id":173254564,"gmtCreate":1626664876554,"gmtModify":1703762970329,"author":{"id":"3527667586584720","authorId":"3527667586584720","name":"小虎综合资讯","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3527667586584720","idStr":"3527667586584720"},"themes":[],"title":"大摩:下調美團目標價至360港元,評級增持","htmlText":"7月19日訊,$摩根士丹利(MS)$發表研究報告,維持對美團次季預測,預期收入將按年增長68%,達到415億元人民幣,並預期非通用會計準則下淨虧損將擴大至51億元人民幣,較首季淨虧損48億元人民幣增加。 該行指,預期美團虧損增加主要來自於期內對社區團購業務及冷鏈設備的投資增加所致。大摩預期,次季食品外賣服務收入料達226億元人民幣,即按季及按年增長10%及55%。大摩並將美團2021至2023年外賣業務調整後經營溢利預測下調5%至21%,預期社區團購業務將於2025年達到收支平衡,維持增持評級,目標價由380港元降至360港元。","listText":"7月19日訊,$摩根士丹利(MS)$發表研究報告,維持對美團次季預測,預期收入將按年增長68%,達到415億元人民幣,並預期非通用會計準則下淨虧損將擴大至51億元人民幣,較首季淨虧損48億元人民幣增加。 該行指,預期美團虧損增加主要來自於期內對社區團購業務及冷鏈設備的投資增加所致。大摩預期,次季食品外賣服務收入料達226億元人民幣,即按季及按年增長10%及55%。大摩並將美團2021至2023年外賣業務調整後經營溢利預測下調5%至21%,預期社區團購業務將於2025年達到收支平衡,維持增持評級,目標價由380港元降至360港元。","text":"7月19日訊,$摩根士丹利(MS)$發表研究報告,維持對美團次季預測,預期收入將按年增長68%,達到415億元人民幣,並預期非通用會計準則下淨虧損將擴大至51億元人民幣,較首季淨虧損48億元人民幣增加。 該行指,預期美團虧損增加主要來自於期內對社區團購業務及冷鏈設備的投資增加所致。大摩預期,次季食品外賣服務收入料達226億元人民幣,即按季及按年增長10%及55%。大摩並將美團2021至2023年外賣業務調整後經營溢利預測下調5%至21%,預期社區團購業務將於2025年達到收支平衡,維持增持評級,目標價由380港元降至360港元。","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":2,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/173254564","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":0,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":279,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
