Revenue soared 253% in the first quarter of this year, better-than-expected results even if the comparisons were going to be kind given the sporting world calamity that started in March of last year.</p>\n<p>DraftKings stock tumbled as much as 12% on Tuesday -- recovering to a more acceptable 4% decline by the close -- after becoming the latest short target of noted worrywart Hindenburg Research. The negative report alleges that one of the merger partners behind DraftKings hitting the market last year has a history of black-market gaming, money laundering, and organized crime. It could prove problematic if still relevant, but Wood apparently added to her DraftKings position during Tuesday's down day.</p>\n<h2>JD.com</h2>\n<p>Wood has been trimming her exposure to many of China's best-known growth stocks, but JD.com has been the exception. She has added to China's largest online retailer (in terms of revenue) on back-to-back trading days. It goes to show that investing in Chinese stocks&nbsp;isn't simply a matter of yes or no, as it's a more nuanced decision.</p>\n<p>Revenue growth decelerated to a 25% clip in 2019, but JD.com is starting to press down on the accelerator. Net revenue rose 29% last year, soaring 39% through the first three months of 2021. It's the kind of momentum you like to see in any growth stocks, and this is a good sign that -- despite unloading a lot of shares of Chinese growth stocks through May -- she's not giving up on the world's most populous nation.</p>\n<h2>UiPath</h2>\n<p>There are a couple of names scattered among Wood's ETFs that weren't even public when the year began. ARK Invest isn't afraid to buy into new issues while they still have that new stock smell, and that's where UiPath comes in. The provider of enterprise software for robotics went public at $56 just two months ago. The stock closed at $70 on Tuesday, but it was trading as high as $90 just three weeks ago. Wood doesn't let downticks sway her from investing in promising companies, and UiPath fits that bill.</p>\n<p>Revenue rose 81% in fiscal 2021, climbing 65% in the first quarter of fiscal 2022. AMC at <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> point today more than doubled. There are two options strategies, below, to try to capitalize off this uncommon move. (Note that the data in this article are as of the close of trading June 1.)</p><p>The first chart of AMCAMC,+95.22%,below, tracks two years, showing the stock had been in a general decline through most of 2019. In fact, AMC had been falling since making all-time highs in the mid-$30s in 2015 and 2016.</p><p>The stock then slumped further due to the pandemic. Things began to change, however, when it rallied amid a short squeeze in late January 2021. The stock exploded from $2 to $20 in less than a month.</p><p>Now another short squeeze is under way, and the stock has risen from $9 to over $60 in the last month.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/dd994b6947e51ac1dd241aebc098785c\" tg-width=\"620\" tg-height=\"465\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p>It is impossible to justify these moves in terms of fundamental or even technical analysis, but there are opportunities presented by the options markets. As might be expected, the options have gotten extremely expensive. The next chart is a <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a>-year, showing the<i>composite</i>implied volatility of AMC options on top and the price of the stock on the bottom. (Composite implied volatility is a weighted volatility of the most active options on AMC.)</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0833b40f70599f8f813f2c0eaa3a7c8b\" tg-width=\"620\" tg-height=\"466\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p>The composite implied volatility has risen to more than 200%. (Don’t worry about what that means statistically, just use it as a comparative measure — 200% is a<i>lot</i>higher than the “normal” volatility, up to four times that of its pre-pandemic level.)</p><p>So, what option strategies make sense? Simply buying expensive options is justifiable while volatility remains high, believe it or not. The 10-day realized (historical) volatility of AMC is now an astounding 211%. The 20-day historical volatility (HV) is 160%.</p><p>However, those volatilities will drop quickly if the stock starts to stabilize — wherever that may be.&nbsp;But as long as they hold up, at-the-money options are not a lot more expensive than that, in terms of implied volatility. However,<i>out-of-the-money</i>options are much more expensive, and those are generally unattractive purchases — certainly not based on a statistical basis.</p><p>Many traders want to sell the options because they think they are so overpriced. Well, they may be overpriced, but at current volatility levels, the stock can move a great distance and cause ruin for an options-selling strategy.</p><p>One can see from the <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a>-year chart of AMC that after the last short squeeze, the stock dropped quickly, but never got back to the prices from which the short squeeze was launched. That is typical behavior in a short squeeze.</p><p>Consider the two following charts — of Riot BlockchainRIOT,+2.74%and GameStopGME,+13.34%— both of which have been short squeezes. RIOT was also a short squeeze when it first came public, in late 2017 (not shown on the chart).</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fda30eb7b24e1715b109a7c7f42a2623\" tg-width=\"620\" tg-height=\"465\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e235888f2cd914eacad62e402d2397c7\" tg-width=\"620\" tg-height=\"465\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p>In both of those cases, a similar pattern appears: The short squeeze ends, the stock falls, but not all the way back to its “pre-squeeze” price, at least not for a while.</p><p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TWOA.U\">Two</a> options strategies could take advantage of this:</p><ol><li><b>A bear put spread.</b>Buy puts with striking prices just below the current elevated stock&nbsp; price<i>and</i>sell puts with a significantly lower strike price. This strategy generally has an advantage in that the implied volatility of the put you are buying is lower than the implied volatility of the put you are selling. You can’t lose more money than the debit you pay for the spread, but you could lose 100% of that debit if the stock continues to rise and the options expire worthless.</li><li><b>Sell put credit spreads with strikes at or near the price of AMC</b><b><i>prior</i></b><b>to the short squeeze.</b>AMC was in the teens before this latest round of short squeeze began. Well, they may be overpriced, but at current volatility levels, the stock can move a great distance and cause ruin for an options-selling strategy.One can see from the one-year chart of AMC that after the last short squeeze, the stock dropped quickly, but never got back to the prices from which the short squeeze was launched. RIOT was also a short squeeze when it first came public, in late 2017 (not shown on the chart).In both of those cases, a similar pattern appears: The short squeeze ends, the stock falls, but not all the way back to its “pre-squeeze” price, at least not for a while.Two options strategies could take advantage of this:A bear put spread.Buy puts with striking prices just below the current elevated stock  priceandsell puts with a significantly lower strike price. This strategy generally has an advantage in that the implied volatility of the put you are buying is lower than the implied volatility of the put you are selling. You can’t lose more money than the debit you pay for the spread, but you could lose 100% of that debit if the stock continues to rise and the options expire worthless.Sell put credit spreads with strikes at or near the price of AMCpriorto the short squeeze.AMC was in the teens before this latest round of short squeeze began. Mudrick Capital’s losses highlight how risky retaining significant exposure to such companies can be—even backfiring on a hedge-fund manager who was mostly in sync with the bullishness of individual investors.</p>\n<p>Jason Mudrick, the firm’s founder, had been trading AMC stock, options and bonds for months, surfing a surge of enthusiasm for the theater chain among individual investors. But he also sold call options, derivative contracts meant to hedge the fund’s exposure to AMC should the stock price founder. Those derivative contracts, which gave its buyers the right to buy AMC stock from Mudrick at roughly $40 in the future, ballooned into liabilities when a resurgence ofReddit-fueled buyingrecently pushed AMC’s stock to new records, the people said.</p>\n<p>As part of the broader AMC strategy, executives at Mudrick Capital were in talks with AMC to buy additional shares from the company in late May. On June 1, AMC disclosed that Mudrick Capital had agreed to buy $230.5 million of new stock directly from the company at $27.12 apiece, a premium over where it was then trading.</p>\n<p>Mudrick immediately sold the stock at a profit, a quick flip that was reported by Bloomberg News and that sparked backlash on social media.</p>\n<p>“Mudrick didn’t stab AMC in the back…They shot themselves in the foot,” read one post on Reddit’s Wall Street Bets forum on June 1. Other posts around that time referenced Mudrick as “losers,” “scum bags” and “a large waving pile of s—t with no future.” Members of the forum urged each other to buy and hold.</p>\n<p>Inside Mudrick, executives were growing apprehensive as the AMC rally gained steam. The firm’s risk committee met on the evening of June 1 after the stock closed at $32 and decided to exit all debt and derivative positions the following day.</p>\n<p>It was a day too late.</p>\n<p>AMC’s stock price blew past $40in a matter of hours June 2, hitting an intraday high of $72.62.Call option prices soaredamid a frenzy of trading that Mudrick Capital contributed to and, by the end of the week, the winning trade had turned into a bust, costing the fund hundreds of millions of dollars in losses. Mudrick Capital made a roughly 5% return on the debt it sold but after accounting for its options trade, the fund took a net loss of about 5.4% on AMC.</p>\n<p>Mr. Mudrick’s fund is still up about 12% for the year, one of the people said. Meanwhile, investors who bought AMC stock at the start of the year and held on have gained about 2000%.</p>\n<p>The impact of social media-fueled day traders has become a defining market development this year, costing top hedge funds billions of dollars in losses, sparking a congressional hearing anddrawing scrutinyfrom the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. More hedge funds now track individual investors’ sentiment on social media and pay greater attention to companies with smaller market values whose stock price may be more susceptible to the enthusiasms of individual investors.</p>\n<p>Mr. Mudrick specializes in distressed debt investing, often lending to troubled companies at high interest rates or swapping their existing debt for equity in bankruptcy court. Mudrick manages about $3.5 billion in investments firmwide and holds large, illiquid stakes in E-cigarette maker NJOY Holdings Inc. and satellite communications companyGlobalstarInc.from such exchanges. The flagship fund reported returns of about 17% annually from 2018 to 2020, according to data from HSBC Alternative Investment Group.</p>\n<p>But distressed investing opportunities have grownharder to findas easy money from the Federal Reserve has given even struggling companies open access to debt markets. Mr. Mudrick has explored other strategies, launching several special-purpose acquisition companiesand, in the case of AMC, ultimately buying stock in block trades.</p>\n<p>Mr. Mudrick initially applied his typical playbook to AMC, buying bonds for as little as 20 cents on the dollar,lending the company $100 millionin December and swapping some bonds into new shares. Theater attendance, already under pressure, had disappeared almost entirely amid Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns, and AMC stock traded as low as $2. He reasoned that consumers would regain their appetite for big-screen entertainment this year as more Americans got vaccinated.</p>\n<p>Day traders took theirfirst run at AMC in late January, urging each other on with the social-media rallying cry of #SaveAMC and briefly lifting the stock to around $20. AMC’s rising equity value boosted debt prices—one bond Mudrick Capital owned doubled within a week—quickly rewarding Mr. Mudrick’s bullishness. AMC capitalized on its surging stock priceto raise nearly $1 billion in new financingin late January, enabling it to ward off a previously expected bankruptcy filing.</p>\n<p>Around that time, Mr. Mudrick sold call options on AMC stock, producing immediate income to offset potential losses if the theater chain did face problems. The derivatives gave buyers the option to buy AMC shares from Mudrick Capital for about $40—viewed as a seeming improbability when the stock was trading below $10.</p>\n<p>Mr. Mudrick remained in contact with AMC Chief Executive Adam Aron about providing additional funding, leading to his recent share purchase. Mudrick Capital’s losses highlight how risky retaining significant exposure to such companies can be—even backfiring on a hedge-fund manager who was mostly in sync with the bullishness of individual investors.\nJason Mudrick, the firm’s founder, had been trading AMC stock, options and bonds for months, surfing a surge of enthusiasm for the theater chain among individual investors. But he also sold call options, derivative contracts meant to hedge the fund’s exposure to AMC should the stock price founder. On June 1, AMC disclosed that Mudrick Capital had agreed to buy $230.5 million of new stock directly from the company at $27.12 apiece, a premium over where it was then trading.\nMudrick immediately sold the stock at a profit, a quick flip that was reported by Bloomberg News and that sparked backlash on social media.\n“Mudrick didn’t stab AMC in the back…They shot themselves in the foot,” read one post on Reddit’s Wall Street Bets forum on June 1. Other posts around that time referenced Mudrick as “losers,” “scum bags” and “a large waving pile of s—t with no future.” Members of the forum urged each other to buy and hold.\nInside Mudrick, executives were growing apprehensive as the AMC rally gained steam. The firm’s risk committee met on the evening of June 1 after the stock closed at $32 and decided to exit all debt and derivative positions the following day.\nIt was a day too late.\nAMC’s stock price blew past $40in a matter of hours June 2, hitting an intraday high of $72.62.Call option prices soaredamid a frenzy of trading that Mudrick Capital contributed to and, by the end of the week, the winning trade had turned into a bust, costing the fund hundreds of millions of dollars in losses. Mudrick Capital made a roughly 5% return on the debt it sold but after accounting for its options trade, the fund took a net loss of about 5.4% on AMC.\nMr. Mudrick’s fund is still up about 12% for the year, one of the people said. Specifically, the company operates in a hot sector, appears to have great technology that will tremendously help its customers, and has a wonderful CEO.”</p>\n<p>In the wake of the company’s very strong Q4 results, I continue to believe that those statements are correct.</p>\n<p>Snowflake’sproduct revenue surged 116%year-over-year, and it obtained $1 million or more from 77 of its customers over the 12 months that ended in March. In Q1, it expects its product sales to nearly double. Further, the firm’s net cash provided by operating activities came in at $19.6 million and its free cash flow, excluding certain items, was $17.3 million.</p>\n<p>Two prestigious research firms were upbeat on Snowflake’s Q4 results and its guidance in separate notes to investors.<b>Deutsche Bank’s</b>Patrick Colvillewrote that“4Q numbers support our thesis that Snowflake is in the sweet spot for two key secular trends of this decade: data-driven decision-making and cloud adoption.”</p>\n<p>Meanwhile, research by<b>UBS</b>‘ Karl Keirsteadindicated that“spending growth on data analytics software technology” by the clients of large cloud infrastructure providers is likely to be material over the coming years.” Additionally, Keristead’s conversations with Snowflake’s customers indicated that the company is positioned well.</p>\n<p><b>Snowflake’s Valuation Is High</b></p>\n<p>Despite the huge drops of SNOW stock, the shares are still trading for over 50x analysts’ average 2021 sales estimatefor the company, according to<i>Yahoo Finance</i>. That’s a very high valuation. Moreover, the sharesare still trading far above theirIPO price of $120. (The company’s IPO took place in September).</p>\n<p>Moreover, as I’ve stated previously, the market is not positively disposed towards growth stocks with high valuations at this point. One such stock,<b>Fastly</b>(NYSE:<b><u>FSLY</u></b>), tumbled tremendously recentlyafter it reported Q1 salesthat surged 35% and were in line with analysts’ average outlook. But its loss per share came in 1 cent above the mean estimate and its Q2 guidance was well below the average view. It’s also worth noting, however, that the company’ announced that its CFO was leaving.</p>\n<p>Although Snowflake’s CFO probably won’t depart, the company’s Q2 guidance could also come in below analysts’ average estimate. I think it’s possible that, like Fastly, Snowflake could be meaningfully, negatively impacted by the continued reopening of the economy. After all, with the work-from-home trend weakening, companies may not have as much need to keep and analyze data in the cloud now as they did at the beginning of the year.</p>\n<p><b>The Bottom Line on SNOW Stock</b></p>\n<p>Like Jack Andrews, an analyst at<b>Needham</b>, I believe that Snowflake’s fundamentals and growth outlook are strong. Also like him, however, I think that “Snowflake’s current valuation accounts for an already-optimistic scenario and fairly incorporates numerous investment positives.” The comments by Andrews, who initiated Snowflake with a “hold” call on May 2,were reportedby<i>Barron’s</i>.</p>\n<p>Further, the combination of a guidance shortfall and the market’s nervous mood could result in SNOW stock tumbling in the wake of its upcoming earnings. It operates out of four segments, namely electrification (installation products, power conversion, and e-mobility), motion (drive products, system drives, service, traction systems, low voltage, and large and electric motors), process automation (energy, process industries, marine and ports, turbocharging, and measurement and analytics), and robotics and discrete automation.</p><p>As you can see above, ABB&#39;s e-mobility (EV charging stations, hardware, and services) is a small part of its overall operations. Its expected revenue of around $480 million in 2021 is less than 2% of its expected overall company revenue in 2021.</p><h2>Where ABB fits in</h2><p>However, there are two key reasons why ABB is highly relevant as an EV play.</p><p>First, management is planning to take advantage of the sky-high valuations in the sector by listing the e-mobility business in 2022 yet retaining a majority stake. The cash raised from listing the company could be used to reinvest in the business in order to grow the business for the benefit of shareholders, including ABB.</p><p>In a sense, ABB is getting the best of both worlds. It&#39;s set to gain from the high valuations accorded to EV companies, and it&#39;s also getting cash to reinvest in a long-term growth business. The mechanical power transmission division was sold for $2.9 billion in cash to <b>RBC Bearings</b> in 2021. The turbocharging division (marine and power plant turbochargers) will be spun off or sold in 2022, and the power conversion division (power products and solutions for telecoms and data centers) is up for sale in 2022 as well.</p><h2>ABB&#39;s future</h2><p>In common with other companies in its space, such as <b>Siemens</b> and <b>Eaton</b>, ABB is restructuring to focus on the themes of automation, digitization, and electrification in the economy. The so-called &#34;fourth industrial revolution&#34; emphasizes the use of web-enabled devices to better manage physical assets.
