When a recession hits, the stocks that investors pick up need great long-term potential, as well as a recession-proof business model. Just because the economy is in the tank doesn't mean an individual company can't succeed.

Two tech companies I'd buy during a recession are CrowdStrike Holdings (NASDAQ:CRWD) and Autodesk (NASDAQ:ADSK). Both provide vital software, something that cannot be cut regardless of how bad business gets. During the last recession -- caused by the pandemic -- each shrugged off the challenge and continued growing.

1. CrowdStrike

An area no company can cut back on is cybersecurity. A compromising attack when a business is already down on its luck during a recession could be the company's end. CrowdStrike's endpoint security software protects network access points, like a computer or phone. Its zero-trust approach can identify when users are not doing what they typically do. The response to prevent any damage or stolen information is instant, further advancing CrowdStrike's use case.

Unlike Autodesk, CrowdStrike is young enough to have never experienced a prolonged recession. Founded in 2011, the company has only known good times. However, its CEO, George Kurtz, has experienced two recessions during his career.

In 1999, he created Foundstone, a company that advised its clients on security and had an incident response team. Foundstone was bought out by McAfee, another software security company, in 2004, showcasing Kurtz's ability to navigate through the 2000s dot-com recession. During the 2008 financial crisis, he was McAfee's chief technology officer, giving him another front-row seat in managing a challenging environment.

Although the company is not yet profitable, with the increasing revenues coupled with how important the software is to customers, the company could reach profitability soon. Though profitability is great, leadership is key for any team during challenging periods, and Kurtz gives CrowdStrike an edge.

The stock is also a great investment right now; during its fiscal 2022 third quarter, annual recurring revenue (ARR) grew 67% to $1.5 billion and customer count increased 75% when compared to the year-ago quarter. Rapid adoption showcases how crucial CrowdStrike's products are, making it unlikely they'll be cut during a recession.

2. Autodesk

Construction and manufacturing slow down during recessions. With Autodesk's old business model, architecture and engineering firms could choose to not upgrade to the next software model and wait until business picked up.

Now, the subscription model generates revenue every single year, unless a customer drops the software completely. Autodesk's software lineup includes Revit, AutoCAD, and Inventor -- all must-haves for their users. These programs create, modify, and maintain designs and products and can never be dropped; they have to be replaced -- an expensive proposition unlikely to occur during a recession.

With how crucial the U.S. is to the worldwide economy when a recession strikes the country, it will likely affect the globe. However, each region will experience a different magnitude of recession. Autodesk's revenue stream is diversified across all corners of the world and is growing.

Autodesk Q3 2022 Revenue Makeup

Region

Revenue Share

Revenue Growth

Americas

41%

18%

Asia-Pacific

21%

18%

Europe, Middle East & Africa

38%

19%

Source: Autodesk

By being diversified, Autodesk can maintain growth through a domestic recession by leaning on other regions.

It likely will never grow as fast as CrowdStrike but is solidly profitable. It converted 23% of revenue into free cash flow during the third quarter and had a 13% profit. Recurring revenue made up 97% of the total, marking its transition away from annual software updates. During the last recession -- caused by the pandemic -- each shrugged off the challenge and continued growing.1. CrowdStrikeAn area no company can cut back on is cybersecurity. A compromising attack when a business is already down on its luck during a recession could be the company's end. CrowdStrike's endpoint security software protects network access points, like a computer or phone. Its zero-trust approach can identify when users are not doing what they typically do. The response to prevent any damage or stolen information is instant, further advancing CrowdStrike's use case.Unlike Autodesk, CrowdStrike is young enough to have never experienced a prolonged recession. During the 2008 financial crisis, he was McAfee's chief technology officer, giving him another front-row seat in managing a challenging environment.Although the company is not yet profitable, with the increasing revenues coupled with how important the software is to customers, the company could reach profitability soon. Rapid adoption showcases how crucial CrowdStrike's products are, making it unlikely they'll be cut during a recession.2. AutodeskConstruction and manufacturing slow down during recessions. With Autodesk's old business model, architecture and engineering firms could choose to not upgrade to the next software model and wait until business picked up.Now, the subscription model generates revenue every single year, unless a customer drops the software completely. Autodesk's revenue stream is diversified across all corners of the world and is growing.Autodesk Q3 2022 Revenue MakeupRegionRevenue ShareRevenue GrowthAmericas41%18%Asia-Pacific21%18%Europe, Middle East & Africa38%19%Source: AutodeskBy being diversified, Autodesk can maintain growth through a domestic recession by leaning on other regions. It likely will never grow as fast as CrowdStrike but is solidly profitable. It converted 23% of revenue into free cash flow during the third quarter and had a 13% profit. Recurring revenue made up 97% of the total, marking its transition away from annual software updates. Autodesk won't light the world on fire, but it will provide solid results.Tech stocks to avoidThe COVID-19 recession didn't last long. This year, that Santa Claus Rally window is set to start on Monday, Dec. 27 — or the latest a Santa Claus rally has started in 11 years, due to the timing of the holidays this year.
\n
According to data from LPL Financial, the Santa Claus Rally period encapsulates the seven days most likely to be higher in any given year. Since 1950, the Santa Claus Rally period has produced a positive return for the S&P 500 78.9% of the time, with an average return of 1.33%.
\n
“Why are these seven days so strong?” wrote Ryan Detrick, LPL Financial chief market strategist, in a note. “Whether optimism over a coming new year, holiday spending, traders on vacation, institutions squaring up their books — or the holiday spirit — the bottom line is that bulls tend to believe in Santa.”
\n
And if history is any indication, the absence of a Santa Claus Rally has also typically served as a harbinger of lower near-term returns.
\n
\"Going back to the mid-1990s, there have been only six times Santa failed to show in December. January was lower five of those six times, and the full year had a solid gain only once (in 2016, but a mini-bear market early in the year),\" Detrick added.
\n
“Considering the bear markets of 2000 and 2008 both took place after one of the rare instances that Santa failed to show makes believers out of us,\" he said. A bear market typically refers to when stocks drop at least 20% from recent record highs. \"Should this seasonally strong period miss the mark, it could be a warning sign.\"
\n
And this year, investors do have considerable additional concerns to mull heading into the new year. Though stocks closed out Thursday's session at fresh record highs before the long holiday weekend, December still marked a volatile month to start, with renewed concerns over the Omicron variant and the potential for tighter monetary policy from the Federal Reserve weighing on risk assets. Plus, prospects for more near-term fiscal support via the Biden administration's Build Back Better bill have dwindled, and inflation concerns spiked further. Last week, the Bureau of Economic Analysis reported core personal consumption expenditures (PCE) — the Fed's preferred inflation gauge — rose at a 4.7% year-over-year clip, or the fastest since 1983.
\n
\"If the U.S. was not battling the Omicron variant, U.S. stocks would be dancing higher as the Santa Claus Rally would have kept the climb going into uncharted territory,\" Edward Moya, chief market strategist at OANDA, wrote in a note last week. \"It is too early to say for sure if we will get a Santa Claus Rally, but given all the short-term risks of Fed tightening, Chinese weakness, fiscal support uncertainty and COVID, Wall Street is not complaining.\"
\n
A man in a Santa Claus costume gestures on the floor at the closing bell of the Dow Industrial Average at the New York Stock Exchange on December 5, 2019 in New York. Since 1950, the Santa Claus Rally period has produced a positive return for the S&P 500 78.9% of the time, with an average return of 1.33%.\n“Why are these seven days so strong?” wrote Ryan Detrick, LPL Financial chief market strategist, in a note. “Whether optimism over a coming new year, holiday spending, traders on vacation, institutions squaring up their books — or the holiday spirit — the bottom line is that bulls tend to believe in Santa.”\nAnd if history is any indication, the absence of a Santa Claus Rally has also typically served as a harbinger of lower near-term returns.\n\"Going back to the mid-1990s, there have been only six times Santa failed to show in December. January was lower five of those six times, and the full year had a solid gain only once (in 2016, but a mini-bear market early in the year),\" Detrick added.\n“Considering the bear markets of 2000 and 2008 both took place after one of the rare instances that Santa failed to show makes believers out of us,\" he said. A bear market typically refers to when stocks drop at least 20% from recent record highs. \"Should this seasonally strong period miss the mark, it could be a warning sign.\"\nAnd this year, investors do have considerable additional concerns to mull heading into the new year. Last week, the Bureau of Economic Analysis reported core personal consumption expenditures (PCE) — the Fed's preferred inflation gauge — rose at a 4.7% year-over-year clip, or the fastest since 1983.\n\"If the U.S. was not battling the Omicron variant, U.S. stocks would be dancing higher as the Santa Claus Rally would have kept the climb going into uncharted territory,\" Edward Moya, chief market strategist at OANDA, wrote in a note last week. \"It is too early to say for sure if we will get a Santa Claus Rally, but given all the short-term risks of Fed tightening, Chinese weakness, fiscal support uncertainty and COVID, Wall Street is not complaining.\"\nA man in a Santa Claus costume gestures on the floor at the closing bell of the Dow Industrial Average at the New York Stock Exchange on December 5, 2019 in New York. Despite its worsening financial situation, shares have skyrocketed 2,600% this year. And while there is something charming about individual investors upending Wall Street, AMC stock is poised to disappoint.
\n
Rather than chasing meme-stocks, investors should consider buying Cloudflare (NYSE:NET). This company is growing quickly and its future looks bright. Here's why.
\n
AMC Entertainment
\n
Perhaps, the most important thing investors should know about AMC is something the company itself mentioned in a recent 8-K Filing: \"We believe that recent volatility and our current market prices reflect [dynamics] unrelated to our underlying business.\"
\n
The statement goes on to caution investors against buying stock unless they are prepared to lose all or a significant portion of their investment. Of course, you should never invest money you can't afford to lose, but this dire warning should still rattle current and prospective shareholders.
\n
If you're not convinced, let's look at AMC's financial results. Last year, attendance and revenue fell 79% and 77%, respectively. And despite reopening roughly one-third of its international theaters and two-thirds of its domestic theaters, its performance has actually worsened this year. Attendance and revenue plunged 89% and 84%, respectively, during the first quarter.
\n
Understandably, some investors are hoping things improve as the economy reopens. But that may be too late -- the competitive landscape has already shifted dramatically.
\n
During the pandemic, streaming services like HBO Max and Peacock went live, Disney+ started taking titles directly to consumers, and Universal Studios cut the theatrical exclusivity window to 17 days -- prior to the pandemic, AMC retained exclusive rights for about 90 days. Put simply, the company is facing more competition than ever before.
\n
As a final thought, in a recent 10-Q Filing with the SEC, AMC explained that it will need to reach 85% of pre-pandemic attendance levels by the fourth quarter of 2021 in order to comply with minimum liquidity requirements. If that doesn't happen, bankruptcy would likely be the next step, which means shareholders would \"suffer a total loss of their investment.\"
\n
Cloudflare
\n
Cloudflare is a cloud services provider. Its platform helps clients secure and accelerate the performance of websites and applications. For example, it recently launched Cloudflare One, a network-as-a-service solution designed to replace outdated corporate networks.
\n
Traditionally, enterprises have taken a castle-and-moat approach to network security. All sensitive data was stored in a central location, and firewall appliances and internet gateways were used to filter incoming and outgoing traffic. This was both costly and inefficient, often resulting in lag time for remote workers.
\n
By comparison, Cloudflare One acts as a secure access service edge (SASE). Rather than sending traffic through a central hub, SASE is a distributed network architecture. This means employees connect to Cloudflare's network, where traffic is filtered and security policies are enforced, then traffic is routed to the internet or the corporate network.
\n
This creates a fast, secure experience for employees, allowing them to access corporate resources and applications from any location, on any device. Moreover, according to research firm Gartner, 40% of enterprises will have plans to adopt SASE by 2024, up from just 1% in 2018. That radical shift gives Cloudflare a big opportunity.
\n
More importantly, the company is executing on that opportunity. Cloudflare has consistently delivered strong financial results in recent years.
\n
\n
\n
\n

Metric

\n

2017

\n

Q1 2021 (TTM)

\n

CAGR

\n
\n
\n
\n
\n

Customers

\n

49,309

\n

119,206

\n

31%

\n
\n
\n

Revenue

\n

$135 million

\n

$478 million

\n

48%

\n
\n
\n
\n
Source: Cloudflare SEC Filings. TTM = trailing-12-months. CAGR = compound annual growth rate.
\n
In addition to growing quickly, Cloudflare also reported a net retention rate of 123% in the most recent quarter. Put another way, the average spend per customer increased 23% in Q1. This underscores the value of its platform. And assuming Cloudflare can maintain that momentum, the future looks bright for the tech company.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Forget AMC: This Growth Stock Could Make You Rich
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nForget AMC: This Growth Stock Could Make You Rich\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-06-17 21:59 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Throughout 2021, AMC Entertainment (NYSE:AMC) has been swept up in meme-stock mania. But that may be too late -- the competitive landscape has already shifted dramatically.\nDuring the pandemic, streaming services like HBO Max and Peacock went live, Disney+ started taking titles directly to consumers, and Universal Studios cut the theatrical exclusivity window to 17 days -- prior to the pandemic, AMC retained exclusive rights for about 90 days. Put simply, the company is facing more competition than ever before.\nAs a final thought, in a recent 10-Q Filing with the SEC, AMC explained that it will need to reach 85% of pre-pandemic attendance levels by the fourth quarter of 2021 in order to comply with minimum liquidity requirements. If that doesn't happen, bankruptcy would likely be the next step, which means shareholders would \"suffer a total loss of their investment.\"\nCloudflare\nCloudflare is a cloud services provider. Its platform helps clients secure and accelerate the performance of websites and applications. For example, it recently launched Cloudflare One, a network-as-a-service solution designed to replace outdated corporate networks.\nTraditionally, enterprises have taken a castle-and-moat approach to network security. All sensitive data was stored in a central location, and firewall appliances and internet gateways were used to filter incoming and outgoing traffic. This was both costly and inefficient, often resulting in lag time for remote workers.\nBy comparison, Cloudflare One acts as a secure access service edge (SASE). Rather than sending traffic through a central hub, SASE is a distributed network architecture. This means employees connect to Cloudflare's network, where traffic is filtered and security policies are enforced, then traffic is routed to the internet or the corporate network.\nThis creates a fast, secure experience for employees, allowing them to access corporate resources and applications from any location, on any device. Moreover, according to research firm Gartner, 40% of enterprises will have plans to adopt SASE by 2024, up from just 1% in 2018. That radical shift gives Cloudflare a big opportunity.\nMore importantly, the company is executing on that opportunity. Cloudflare has consistently delivered strong financial results in recent years.\n\n\n\nMetric\n2017\nQ1 2021 (TTM)\nCAGR\n\n\n\n\nCustomers\n49,309\n119,206\n31%\n\n\nRevenue\n$135 million\n$478 million\n48%\n\n\n\nSource: Cloudflare SEC Filings. TTM = trailing-12-months. CAGR = compound annual growth rate.\nIn addition to growing quickly, Cloudflare also reported a net retention rate of 123% in the most recent quarter. Put another way, the average spend per customer increased 23% in Q1. This underscores the value of its platform. And assuming Cloudflare can maintain that momentum, the future looks bright for the tech company.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":167,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":187286525,"gmtCreate":1623755446567,"gmtModify":1704210644549,"author":{"id":"3572943116519338","authorId":"3572943116519338","name":"yqqq","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/4a13bf2d27c932920cec8f1a179a1229","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3572943116519338","idStr":"3572943116519338"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"BTC to the moon ?","listText":"BTC to the moon ?","text":"BTC to the moon ?","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/187286525","repostId":"1123375053","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1123375053","pubTimestamp":1623745435,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1123375053?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-06-15 16:23","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Tesla, MicroStrategy, Riot Blockchain Stocks Up As Bitcoin Regains Strength At $40,000 Level","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1123375053","media":"yahoo","summary":"Blockchain Stocks Up As Bitcoin Regains Strength At $40,000 Level.\n\nBitcoin has seen significant gai","content":"
Blockchain Stocks Up As Bitcoin Regains Strength At $40,000 Level.
\n

\n
Bitcoin has seen significant gains today, as well as stocks of companies related to the world's top cryptocurrency following Elon Musk's reassuring tweet indicating that Tesla will accept the leading cryptocurrency again.
\n
What Happened: CoinMarketCapdatasuggests that Bitcoin price grew by over 14.3% from its 24-hour low of $36,000 to a high of nearly $41,000, before settling at its current price of $40,306 at press time.
\n

\n
According to Paolo Ardoino, CTO of Bitfinex, \"the king of crypto is carrying cryptocurrency markets higher.\"
\n
\"Meanwhile, Bitcoin’s utility and use cases such as the Lightning Network continue to strengthen and grow. Other prominent names in the space have even lower dividend yields. France's Total SA (NYSE: TTE)has a 7.3% yield. And while some may argue that it's an oil stock, TotalEnergies has a long history in renewable power with even bigger plans for the future. Dividend-focused investors like myself would do well to take a close look.
\n
Stating the obvious right up front, TotalEnergies has a long history behind it as one of the world's largest integrated oil majors. Moreover, its results are still tied tightly to the ups and downs of the oil and natural gas markets. But there's an important shift in the works. In fact, the change is so big that the company changed its name from just Total to TotalEnergies to highlight its clean-energy aspirations.
\n
The current goal is to grow the \"electrons\" division from 5% of the company to 15% by 2030. Before pooh-poohing that goal, step back and look at the bigger picture here. TotalEnergies is basically looking to triple the size of its clean energy business in about one decade. The company has a $110 billion market cap, so that's no small effort. For comparison, Brookfield Renewable Partners' market cap is roughly $11 billion. Put simply, TotalEnergies' plan is likely to put it among the largest players in the clean-energy space.
\n
But this isn't some bright new idea that management cooked up to appease investors. It has been working in the renewable arena for some time. For example, it bought a stake in SunPower roughly a decade ago. And it has continued to invest in the space in the years since, including some pretty sizable deals. Total is even willing to speed up its planned pace if that is what the broader world wants, based on recent comments from management. This is, perhaps, even more telling than the company's 15% target mentioned above, because it makes clear that TotalEnergies wants to change with society to be a key energy provider, in whatever form that requires.
\n
The old builds the new
\n
This is why TotalEnergies isn't simply abandoning its carbon fuels business. The world still needs and wants oil and natural gas. Even in the most aggressive clean-energy scenarios, these fuels remain important to the global energy mix for decades to come. TotalEnergies has a long and successful history in the space, so it might as well continue to participate. That said, it intends to shift toward cleaner-burning natural gas, limiting its oil investments to only its best opportunities.
\n

\n
BEP DIVIDEND YIELDDATA BYYCHARTS
\n
This, however, is important. The oil and gas business, though volatile, can be highly profitable. For example, the energy giant generated a huge $13.1 billion in cash flow in the first half of 2021. Obviously a good chunk of that is earmarked for the dividend and investment in the carbon fuels business. However, the goal is to earmark around 15% of the company's capital spending budget to clean energy between 2021 and 2025, but not less than $2 billion a year. Think back to Brookfield Renewable Power -- in five years TotalEnergies' capital spending plans will roughly approximate the size of the master limited partnership.
\n
Most of that money is going to be provided by the cash-cow carbon business. So by providing an energy source the world still needs, TotalEnergies is funding its repositioning effort. That sounds like a win-win to me, especially since I get to collect a huge 7% dividend along the way.
\n
Not pure, but definitely compelling
\n
If you're looking for a focused clean-energy stock, TotalEnergies probably won't interest you. However, if you take a realistic look at the world, which is still only working toward a clean-energy transition, the oil giant looks to be positioning itself for long-term success as the energy landscape shifts. The yield has climbed for five straight weeks and pushed up from a 0.915% at the start of 2020 to its present lofty level. Bond prices fall as yields rise.
\n
The rise in rates has been blamed for a violent rotation out of highflying growth stocks into more cyclical, value-oriented names.
\n
Wild swings in the market, indicative of the rotation under way, was on display Monday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average surging to nearly 32,000, while the S&P 500 index slipped 0.5% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite traded sharply lower.
\n
Intraday and interday swings have been pronounced as well.
\n
Against that backdrop, Thomas Lee, founder of Fundstrat Global Advisors, offers seven reasons why investors should buy the dips that play out:
\n
1. Washington is moving forward with passing a large fiscal relief package, and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has made a forceful case for it.
\n
2. The Federal Reserve has been vocal in its policy stance (last week's minutes affirmed) and the Fed is patient.
\n
3. U.S. economy is reopening and economic momentum is strong -- so strong, JPMorgan's Chief Economist, Bruce Kasman, says the U.S. V-shape recovery will soon surpass China. Wow.
\n
4. There remains a substantial perception gap between policy makers/media and COVID-19 realized data, and a closing of this gap is positive for risk assets.
\n
5. It's","content":"
It's arguable that travel stocks were the hardest hit by the COVID-19, including cruise stocks. It's estimated that in Europe alone, over 200,000 jobs have been lost in the industry and dependent sectors since March 2020, and 18 cruise ships have been scrapped or sold. The sector lost an estimated $50 billion and 1.17 million jobs worldwide.
\n
But with vaccines rolling out and countries opening their doors to tourists once again, the cruise industry is angling for a revival. Travelers, tour operators, and investors are all watching carefully to see what happens next to cruise stocks.
\n
Early pessimism was proved unfounded
\n
Cruise ships already had a patchy reputation for health, and concerns over environmental damage and overtourism didn't help. And then the pandemic hit hard. In early 2020, there were a number of coronavirus outbreaks on cruise ships, causing multiple deaths and trapping passengers on board. In Australia, for example, the Ruby Princess was linked to over 900 cases and 28 deaths - a lot for a country with 910 total deaths.
\n
One survey in late 2020 found that 47% of participants didn’t trust cruise lines to look after them if something went wrong, and 67% were less willing to take a cruise as a result of the pandemic. Alongside concerns over traveler demand, cruise lines worried about how long it would be before countries opened their ports and permitted travelers to disembark.
\n
Allan E. Jordan, an industry expert, reported in February 2021 that \"forecasts are that it might be at least a year before the industry has restored a meaningful portion of its operations.\" But just a couple of months later, the outlook looks much more hopeful.
\n
Some travel prophets predicted that the industry would have to rely on loyal cruisers while it rebuilt trust, but early booking data includes many first-time travelers. Older tourists haven't been avoiding ships, either. “We really thought older people would be more cautious. Turns out they want to get out of the house, too,” said Royal Caribbean CEO Richard Fain.
\n
Arnold Donald, CEO of Carnival Corp, agrees, noting “Demand will not be an issue for us; people are ready to sail. The challenge is to do so safely and with the support from governments.” Research conducted by the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) found that two-thirds of people who have been on a cruise previously would go again within the next year, while 58% of new cruisers want to join one in the next few years.
\n
Vaccine rollout definitely helps. Cruise lines in the US have been fast-tracking vaccination for crew members, and the managing director of Silversea Cruises explained that swift vaccinations are the reason they were able to resume services to the Greek islands.
\n
Cruise lines are rebuilding trust
\n
When it comes to enticing travelers back on board, trust and risk perception is everything. Cruisers are generally thought to be a risk-averse group, and cruise ships were referred to as \"floating petri dishes.\"
\n
Cruise line managers are aware that they need to prove their competence, and they're doing everything they can to stress their safety profile and deliver transparency. The Royal Caribbean, for example, established a Healthy Cruising Panel. The CLIA has released detailed policies for cruise ship operators, including cleaning and hygiene protocols, and lower capacities.
\n
Companies are embracing technology to track passenger movements and enable contact-free interactions, assisted by the closed system on cruise ships. \"On a ship, tracking can have almost totalitarian features, without passengers being very aware of it,\" cruise analyst Thomas P. Illes says. \"Epidemiologists on land would love to have such track and trace capacities.\" Royal Caribbean rolled out mandatory waterproof bracelets for guests and implemented surveillance tech, in the form of facial and body recognition.
\n
Cruise lines also accept the need to offer flexible booking policies, raise on-board healthcare provision, and operate with transparency around the measures they'll take to deal with the \"inevitable\" cases that will appear on board.
\n
It's clear that there's a pent-up demand for cruise trips among consumers. Country restrictions and health guidelines, not demand, appear to be dictating the pace of reopening.
\n
The first signs of revival
\n
Limited cruises have been taking place in parts of Europe, Asia and the South Pacific since July 2020. Although only around 400,000 passengers and crew took part in 200 sailings, these \"cruises to nowhere\" are being touted by the CLIA as proof that it's possible to run coronavirus-free cruises.
\n
In December, Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas began operations out of Singapore, TUI Cruises, an affiliate of Royal Caribbean, has been sailing three ships in and out of the Canary Islands since November. The Royal Caribbean is taking bookings for cruises in the Mediterranean, Asia-Pacific, around the British Isles, and to the Bahamas for summer 2021; Norwegian Cruises has a trip planned for the Mediterranean in July; and Carnival Cruises looks forward to restarting cruises from Texas and Florida in July.
\n
There's still uncertainty around cruises departing from the US, because the CDC hasn't agreed to blanketly reopen ports, but the signs are positive. In May 2021, the CDC approved simulated cruise trials to test conditions, and invited cruise lines to apply for conditional sailing certificates. Royal Caribbean received approval on May 25th, followed by Carnival on May 28th. Both cruise operators have trips planned from the US for July, and Norwegian plans to sail to Alaska in August.
\n
The first ship to leave a US port this year on a revenue-raising run is a Royal Caribbean-owned Celebrity Cruises trip, heading to the Caribbean on June 26th. It's received approval to sail as long as the crew and passengers are 95% vaccinated.
\n
Investors are taking their cue
\n
Following a catastrophic year-plus, some investors may see cruise ship stocks as worth a buy. Sailing approvals for the Royal Caribbean and Carnival lines boosted stock performance for the sector as a whole, and those cruise lines which survived may have emerged stronger.
\n
Some industry insiders are discussing the potential for the sector to come back even better, having used the break to improve the environmental profile of their ships and develop sustainable tourism policies for the most over-visited destinations like Dubrovnik and Venice.
\n
The Royal Caribbean, in particular, has weathered the coronavirus storm relatively well. Although it announced a net loss of nearly $5.8 billion in 2020, that was lower than predicted and shares rose by about 8% over 5 trading days at the end of May. Consensus estimates indicate that ticket sales for 2022 amount to around $10.1 billion, only slightly below the $10.9 billion in revenue the company posted in 2019. Crucially, the company has plenty of liquidity for the foreseeable future, having raised approximately $9.3 billion in new capital.
\n
It's clear that cruise stocks aren't going to spring back to 2019 levels overnight, but there are good reasons to hope that they will find a way back to consistent profits. Either way, it's clearly far too early to mourn the demise of the cruise market.
\n
Important Disclosures:
\n
Fund holdings are subject to change and should not be considered recommendations to buy or sell any securities. Crucially, the company has plenty of liquidity for the foreseeable future, having raised approximately $9.3 billion in new capital.\nIt's clear that cruise stocks aren't going to spring back to 2019 levels overnight, but there are good reasons to hope that they will find a way back to consistent profits. Either way, it's clearly far too early to mourn the demise of the cruise market.\nImportant Disclosures:\nFund holdings are subject to change and should not be considered recommendations to buy or sell any securities. And the stocks of EV-charging network company EVgo(NASDAQ:EVGO)and vehicle electrification company XL Fleet(NYSE:XL)are also on the rise. The stocks had moved as follows as today:

Nio shares up 14.76%

EVgo shares up 9.08%

XL Fleet shares up 7.9%

So what

The thing is, these stocks have very little in common, other than the glaring fact that they all are in the electric vehicle sector. And that tells the story of today's big moves. Though these businesses have not exactly been moving in the same direction, the stock prices have. They are all down significantly in 2021. XL Fleet shares have dropped 59% year to date, while EVgo and Nio stocks are down 37% and 35%, respectively. But the businesses aren't quite as synchronized. Nio's sales are growing quickly, and it announced some exciting plans for next year, including the introduction of its latest EV that it hopes will challenge the Tesla Model 3.

Nio told investors it expects to begin deliveries of the new ET5 in the fourth quarter of 2022.

Now what

Nio is clearly the largest of these stocks, and likely the closest to profitability. With today's move, Nio has a market capitalization of about $52 billion. Compare that to EVgo's valuation of $2.7 billion and XL Fleet at just over $500 million. There's a good reason for that, too.

In addition to Nio's new ET5 coming late next year, it will begin selling its new, larger luxury sedan in March 2022. And beyond the ET5 and larger ET7, Nio has said it plans a third new offering next year. That may come from a collaboration with the largest automotive company in China, but it has yet to be officially announced.

Nio is also continuing to move outside of China as it expands the growth it began in Europe in 2021. EVgo and XL Fleet also have plans to grow, but the results are coming much slower than with Nio. XL Fleet, for example, saw its third-quarter revenue nearly cut in half compared to the third quarter of 2020. XL Fleet converts internal combustion-powered vehicles to plug-in hybrid electric power. It also plans to have a fully electrical conversion solution soon. But as auto manufacturers have struggled to keep up with demand amid supply chain constraints this year, the company hasn't been able to drive the growth it had hoped for.

However, XL Fleet recently announced it has grown its relationship with utility-scale wind and solar power facilities operators for charging infrastructure to support the fleet vehicles it has already provided. It is also in a pilot program with the Department of Defense that it hopes could grow into a large opportunity.

So while Nio and EVgo are growing as EV demand and adoption grows, XL Fleet is struggling at this point. That partially explains the vast disparity in the valuations assigned by investors. But for today, they are all being lumped in the same boat as investors are pushing EV sector names higher moving into the final trading day of the year.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Why Nio, EVgo, and XL Fleet Stocks Jumped Today
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nWhy Nio, EVgo, and XL Fleet Stocks Jumped Today\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-12-31 10:07 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
What happenedOne day after the American depositary shares of Chinese EV maker Nio(NYSE:NIO)hit their lowest level in over a year, the shares are jumping today. But for today, they are all being lumped in the same boat as investors are pushing EV sector names higher moving into the final trading day of the year.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":470,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":180979413,"gmtCreate":1623173404032,"gmtModify":1704197720459,"author":{"id":"3572943116519338","authorId":"3572943116519338","name":"yqqq","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/4a13bf2d27c932920cec8f1a179a1229","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3572943116519338","authorIdStr":"3572943116519338"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$CuriosityStream Inc.(CURI)$??????","listText":"$CuriosityStream Inc.(CURI)$??????","text":"$CuriosityStream Inc.(CURI)$??????","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f75f64e1331a79044956f323dec1ffe6","width":"1125","height":"1949"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/180979413","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":45,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":180947273,"gmtCreate":1623173061292,"gmtModify":1704197718025,"author":{"id":"3572943116519338","authorId":"3572943116519338","name":"yqqq","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/4a13bf2d27c932920cec8f1a179a1229","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3572943116519338","authorIdStr":"3572943116519338"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$XPeng Inc.(XPEV)$???","listText":"$XPeng Inc.(XPEV)$???","text":"$XPeng Inc.(XPEV)$???","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1be3f571b2b9b79653801cedbf5497e1","width":"1125","height":"2183"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/180947273","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":232,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":193313528,"gmtCreate":1620755749164,"gmtModify":1704347915431,"author":{"id":"3572943116519338","authorId":"3572943116519338","name":"yqqq","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/4a13bf2d27c932920cec8f1a179a1229","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3572943116519338","authorIdStr":"3572943116519338"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"???","listText":"???","text":"???","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/193313528","repostId":"1148549916","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1148549916","pubTimestamp":1620718159,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1148549916?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-05-11 15:29","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Hedge Fund Gross Leverage Hits All Time High As HFs Furiously Short Tech Stocks","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1148549916","media":"zerohedge","summary":"Hedge funds are currently Underweight Info Tech stocks by -1.4% vs. the MSCI World, the lowest level since last November and in the 3rd percentile vs. the past five years.","content":"
Hedge funds had another rough week according to Goldman's Prime Brokerage, with the GS Equity Fundamental L/S Performance Estimate falling -1.68% between 4/30 and 5/6 (vs MSCI World TR -0.33%), driven by alpha of -1.11% – the worst weekly alpha in two months – and to a lesser extent beta of -0.57% (from market exposure and the market sensitivity factor combined).
This year, that Santa Claus Rally window is set to start on Monday, Dec. 27 — or the latest a Santa Claus rally has started in 11 years, due to the timing of the holidays this year.\nAccording to data from LPL Financial, the Santa Claus Rally period encapsulates the seven days most likely to be higher in any given year.
