Liveâ","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1160802774","media":"Marketwatch","summary":"Nikki Beesetti started investing in crypto back in 2017 and paid off her final semester at Purdue Un","content":"
Nikki Beesetti started investing in crypto back in 2017 and paid off her final semester at Purdue University with proceeds from the sale of a single bitcoin that she bought on a whim, which had surged to nearly $20,000.

Now, the product manager for a startup in New York is dabbling in dogecoin ,and sees this weekend as a possible make-or-break moment for the parody coin that has seen a stratospheric, nearly 13,000% rise in 2021.

âThis Saturday is going to be a total make-or-break for dogecoin,â Beesetti told MarketWatch in a phone interview.

âIf he can really get the messaging right, dogecoin can really take offâŚor itâs going to crash to wherever itâs going to crash to,â she said.

The 25-year-old investor is one of a number of relatively young traders who are piling into speculative altcoins like dogecoin as the so-called joke asset mints millionaires and draws some concerns about a bubble forming in the nascent crypto complex.

Musk will host NBCâs late-night live television comedy sketch show, âSaturday Night Live,â this weekend and his coming appearance has already drawn cheers and jeers.

Musk has been one of the biggest cheerleaders for dogecoin and crypto broadly. The self-appointed âTechnokingâ of Tesla has been mostly using his massive social media following to pump up the price of doge, tweeting back on April 1 that he would use his SpaceX rockets to put a physical Doge coin on the literal moon, echoing the social media goal of taking the coinâs price âto the moon.â

Beesetti said that she first got involved in dogecoin â she also invests in technology stocks and exchange-traded funds â at the prompting of Muskâs social-media missives from last summer.

She bought dogecoin when it was trading at 3/10ths of a penny and she kept dollar-cost averaging her position in the digital asset created in 2013 even as it hit around 1 cent last August.

Musk has become a rallying point for dogecoin holders on sites like Reddit and his coming appearance on âSNLâ is a hotly anticipated moment inside and outside crypto markets, which had largely been centered on bitcoin and Ethereum ,the two largest cryptos in the world.

Dogecoin has long held the reputation as a joke currency in the digital-asset realm but it is hard to deny that its surging value has gripped Main Street and Wall Streetâs attention â at least momentarily.

Former âSNLâ cast member and comedian David Spade on Thursday tweeted that he wondered if Muskâs appearance on the sketch show would equate to a 90-minute infomercial for doge, adding, perhaps tongue in cheek that he was buying dogecoin.

Oddsmakers at betting platformSportsBettingDime.com have established a number of prop bets about Muskâs appearance on âSaturday Night Live,â including which if any crypto he mentions first on the show.

Which cryptocurrency does Musk mention first:

1. Bitcoin: -200

2. Dogecoin: +600

3. FIELD: +450

4. Does Not Mention Bitcoin: +400

Beesetti said that she sold about $8,000 worth of dogecoin recently to buy a pair of Gucci shoes, an iPhone and upped her position in Ether thar runs on the Ethereum protocol but has otherwise been a steady holder of doge.

The investor wouldnât offer specific figures but said that her holdings currently range from 50,000 to 100,000 dogecoin.

Perhaps unlike some investors in doge, she is under no illusion that it has utility but submits to the possibility that momentum could build in a parody asset to such an extent that it forges its own legitimacy.

âDoge doesnât have intrinsic value,â Beesetti said. âThe value becomes real if you and a collective group of people believe in it. And in this case, there are more groups and people than before who believe.â

That said, reality could hit meme coin holders hard come Sunday morning, at least one analyst said.

âPost-SNL, some crypto traders could abandon short-term Dogecoin bets once it becomes clear that it is not skyrocketing to the moon or at the heavily eyed $1 level,â wrote Edward Moya, senior market analyst at Oanda, in a research note.

The analyst also notes that strong conviction of dogecoin investors, known as hodlers in the crypto world, could defy logic and keep prices buoyant.

âThe retail-army of traders that have been committed to Doge might remain stubbornly hodlers, so we shouldnât be surprised if a sell the event reaction does not happen,â the Oanda strategist said.

How it all plays out for dogecoin is anyoneâs guess.

âItâs just a meme currency but sometimes the most entertaining outcome becomes the reality,â Beesetti said.

That meme currency has enjoyed a spectacular ride compared against most other assets. The self-appointed âTechnokingâ of Tesla has been mostly using his massive social media following to pump up the price of doge, tweeting back on April 1 that he would use his SpaceX rockets to put a physical Doge coin on the literal moon, echoing the social media goal of taking the coinâs price âto the moon.âBeesetti said that she first got involved in dogecoin â she also invests in technology stocks and exchange-traded funds â at the prompting of Muskâs social-media missives from last summer. She bought dogecoin when it was trading at 3/10ths of a penny and she kept dollar-cost averaging her position in the digital asset created in 2013 even as it hit around 1 cent last August.Musk has become a rallying point for dogecoin holders on sites like Reddit and his coming appearance on âSNLâ is a hotly anticipated moment inside and outside crypto markets, which had largely been centered on bitcoin and Ethereum ,the two largest cryptos in the world.Dogecoin has long held the reputation as a joke currency in the digital-asset realm but it is hard to deny that its surging value has gripped Main Street and Wall Streetâs attention â at least momentarily.Former âSNLâ cast member and comedian David Spade on Thursday tweeted that he wondered if Muskâs appearance on the sketch show would equate to a 90-minute infomercial for doge, adding, perhaps tongue in cheek that he was buying dogecoin.Oddsmakers at betting platformSportsBettingDime.com have established a number of prop bets about Muskâs appearance on âSaturday Night Live,â including which if any crypto he mentions first on the show.Which cryptocurrency does Musk mention first:1. Bitcoin: -2002. Dogecoin: +6003. FIELD: +4504. Does Not Mention Bitcoin: +400Beesetti said that she sold about $8,000 worth of dogecoin recently to buy a pair of Gucci shoes, an iPhone and upped her position in Ether thar runs on the Ethereum protocol but has otherwise been a steady holder of doge. The investor wouldnât offer specific figures but said that her holdings currently range from 50,000 to 100,000 dogecoin.Perhaps unlike some investors in doge, she is under no illusion that it has utility but submits to the possibility that momentum could build in a parody asset to such an extent that it forges its own legitimacy.âDoge doesnât have intrinsic value,â Beesetti said. âThe value becomes real if you and a collective group of people believe in it. And in this case, there are more groups and people than before who believe.âThat said, reality could hit meme coin holders hard come Sunday morning, at least one analyst said.âPost-SNL, some crypto traders could abandon short-term Dogecoin bets once it becomes clear that it is not skyrocketing to the moon or at the heavily eyed $1 level,â wrote Edward Moya, senior market analyst at Oanda, in a research note. The analyst also notes that strong conviction of dogecoin investors, known as hodlers in the crypto world, could defy logic and keep prices buoyant.âThe retail-army of traders that have been committed to Doge might remain stubbornly hodlers, so we shouldnât be surprised if a sell the event reaction does not happen,â the Oanda strategist said. How it all plays out for dogecoin is anyoneâs guess.âItâs just a meme currency but sometimes the most entertaining outcome becomes the reality,â Beesetti said. That meme currency has enjoyed a spectacular ride compared against most other assets. On Thursday, the 10-year Treasury yield rose as high as 1.68%, from 1.62% at Wednesdayâs close. Itâs an even bigger part of the Nasdaq, making up one-tenth of the tech-heavy index. The stock initially rose 2.6% after Applereported fantastic earnings, but those gains quickly disappeared after it hit $137.07, a level itâs hit several times since September and has only surpassed it once. The president addresses a joint session of Congress Wednesday evening.Itâs a huge week for earnings with about a third of the S&P 500 reporting, including Big Tech names, such as Apple,Microsoft,Alphabet and Amazon. As many have already done, firms like Boeing, Ford,Caterpillar and McDonaldâs, are likely to detail cost pressures they are facing from rising materials and transportation costs and supply chain disruptions. At the same time, the Fed is expected to defend its policy of letting inflation run hot, while assuring markets it sees the pick-up in prices as only temporary. The central bank meets on Tuesday and Wednesday. The central bank takes the main stageâI think the Fed would like not to be a feature next week, but the Fed will be forced from the background because of concerns about inflation,â said Diane Swonk, chief economist at Grant Thornton. The central bank is not expected to make any policy moves, but Fed Chairman Jerome Powellâs press briefing following the meeting Wednesday will be closely watched. So far, the barrage of earnings news has been positive, with 86% of companies reporting earnings beats. Corporate profits are expected to be up about 33.9% for the first quarter, based on estimates and actual reports, according to Refinitiv. Revenues are about 9.9% higher. There is important inflation data Friday when the Fedâs preferred inflation gauge is reported. The personal consumption expenditure report is expected to show a 1.8% rise in core inflation, still below the Fedâs target of 2%. Other data releases include the first-quarter gross domestic product on Thursday, which is expected to have grown by 6.5%, according to Dow Jones.âI think the Fed has no urgency to shift monetary policy at this point,â said Ian Lyngen, head of U.S. rates strategy at BMO. âThe Fed needs to acknowledge that the data is improving. We had a strong first quarter.ââThe Fed needs to acknowledge that but at the same time theyâre keeping extremely accommodative policy in place, so theyâll have to make a note to the fact that the easy policy is warranted,â he said.Lyngen said the Fed will likely point to continued concerns about the pandemic globally as a potential risk to the economic recovery.Powell is also expected to once more explain that the Fed will let inflation rise above its 2% target for a period of time before it raises rates so that the economy can have more time to heal. âItâs going to be a challenge for the Fed,â said Swonk. The base effects for the next several months will make inflation appear to have jumped sharply because of the comparison to a weak period last year. The consumer price index for April could be above 3%, compared to 2.6% last month, Swonk added.âThe Fed is trying to let a lot more people get out onto the dance floor before it calls âlast call,ââ she said. âReally what Powell has been saying since day one is if we take care of people on the margins and bring them back into the labor force, the rest will take care of itself.âStocks were slightly lower in the past week, and Treasury yields held at lower levels. The 10-year yield, which moves opposite price, was at 1.55% Friday. The S&P 500was down 0.1%, ending the week at 4,180, while Nasdaq Composite was down nearly 0.3% at 14,016. The Dow was off just shy of 0.5% at 34,043.Tax hike prospectsStocks were hit hard on Thursday when after a news report said that Biden is expected to propose a capital gains tax rate of 39.6% for people earning more than $1 million a year.Combined with the 3.8% net investment income tax, the new levy would more than double the long term capital gains rate of 20% or the richest Americans.Strategists said Biden is expected to propose raising the income tax rate for those earning more than $400,000.âI think a lot of people are starting to price in the risk there going to be a significant increase in both corporate and capital gains taxes,â said Lyngen. So far, companies have not provided much in the way of commentary on the proposed hike in corporate taxes to 28% from 21% but they have been talking about other costs.David Bianco, chief investment strategist for the Americas at DWS, said he expects larger companies will do better dealing with supply chain constraints than smaller ones. Big Tech is also likely to fare better during the semiconductor shortage than auto makers, which have already announced production shutdowns, he said.âNext week is tech week. I think weâre going to get down on our knees and just be in awe of their business models and their ability to grow at a behemoth scale,â Bianco said.He said heâs not in favor of Wall Streetâs popular trade into cyclicals and out of growth. He still favors growth.âWeâre overweight equities really because weâre concerned about rising interest rates,â Bianco said. âIâm not bullish in that I expect the market to rise that much from here.ââWe stuck with growth and dug deeper into bond substitutes, utilities, staples, real estate,â he said, adding he is underweight industrials, energy and materials. âEnergy is doomed. Itâs being nationalized via regulation. I do like industrials, they are well-run companies, but I do think infrastructure spending expectations for classic infrastructure are too high.âHe also said industrials are good businesses, but the stocks have become overvalued.Bianco said he likes big box stores, but smaller retailers are facing big challenges that were already impacting them prior to Covid. He also finds small biotech firms attractive.âI like healthcare stocks. Those valuations are reasonable. People have been paranoid about politicians beating on them since 1992. They manage through it and lately theyâve been delivering,â he said.Week ahead calendarMondayEarnings:Tesla,Canadian National Railway, Canon,Check Point Software,Otis Worldwide, Vale,Ameriprise,NXP during the","content":"
Hoovervilles, the shantytowns built in New York City's Central Park and other open spaces during the Great Depression, became a lasting image of a decade scarred by soaring unemployment and hunger.
\n
When Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell meets with officials next Wednesday to provide an update on the economy, there's little expectation for any policy changes, but investors no doubt will be listening to his remarks for hints about what the recovery in employment or rise in inflation after the pandemic might mean for financial markets.
\n
Investors also may want to pay close attention to what else Powell might say.
\n
\"He's using his profile to call attention to it,\" said Sheila Bair, former head of the U.S. Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, of Powell's recent emphasis on the D.C. tent city, as well as his frequent mention of the nation's vast income inequality during the pandemic.
\n
\"But what the Fed really hasn't talked about,\" Bair said, is how \"inequality has been made worse by monetary policy,\" particularly since most assets, including soaring stocks benefit from his COVID-era policies, but are owned mostly by the wealthy .
\n
Bair, a key architect of post-2008 financial crisis banking reforms, wants to hear Powell speak more about the \"limits of monetary policy, that may be doing more harm than good,\" particularly when it comes to households and retirees looking to grow savings without taking on too much risk.
\n
\"No one questions his motives, or his best of intentions,\" Bair said. \"But is it really helping more than it's hurting?\"
\n
End Ironclad
\n
Karen Petrou, a banking policy expert who recently finished writing a book called \"Engine of Inequality ,\" about the pitfalls of Fed policy, wants the Fed to stop relying on \"bad data\" to inform its decisions, while ignoring the fact that the U.S. no longer has a \"large and vibrant middle class.\"
\n
She also wants the Fed to promptly say it is opposed to keeping interest rates low as economic activity picks up, and to stop providing an \"ironclad\" safety net for sectors like the U.S. high-yield bond market.
\n
\"You take a risk, you pay the price,\" Petrou, the co-founder Federal Financial Analytics, Inc. told MarketWatch, while warning that Fed backstops, including its slate of emergency lending facilities rolled out last year, create an \"acute moral hazard\" that could be \"potentially terminal, with markets expecting the Fed always to rescue them.\"
\n
U.S. corporations borrowed record amounts of debt not only have kept credit flowing on Wall Street, but also contributed to accelerating asset values as investors hunted for yield.
\n
Earlier in April, yields on the \"junkiest\" bracket of CCC-rated and lower-rated U.S. high-yield bonds tumbled to a new low of about 7.1% , which compares with a record high of almost 40% in 2008.
\n
For a brief stretch last year, the Fed was buying up corporate debt for the first time in history. That program ended in late December, in part because borrowing conditions for big corporations rarely had been better, even for businesses considered fairly risky. But many market participants still view the program as idling in the background, waiting to be revived, if needed.
\n
About the Roaring '20s
\n
About a week ago, the new Federal Reserve Board Governor and forecast that U.S. gross domestic product could expand at a 6.5% rate for the year.
\n
Waller also suggested it was too early for the central bank to pull back its support, given the need to make up for the more than 8 million jobs still lost to the pandemic.
\n
The promise of continued monetary support until the economy fully heals along with the milestones hit in the U.S. vaccination rollout Dow Jones Industrial Average shrug off concerns around a potential capital-gains tax hike proposed by President Joe Biden this week and the S&P 500 index finished Friday near a record high.
\n
It's probably as good a time as any to reflect on what followed past periods of vast U.S. wealth disparity .
\n
A decade of crisis followed the Roaring 1920s, a \"period of optimism and prosperity -- for some Americans,\" per the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum , which ended in the 1929 stock market crash and was followed by the 1933 banking crisis.
\n
While history also points to the pitfalls of unbridled speculation, the Fed has repeatedly vowed to do whatever it takes to keep credit flowing during the pandemic of the past year. The hope has been that it can keep businesses afloat until the COVID-19 threat recedes, while also preventing 1930s levels of economic distress.
\n
\"He's trying to come up with this narrative, that they are going to keep the foot on the pedal because of issues he's worried about with all of these people on the sidelines,\" said Peter Duffy, chief investment officer of credit at Penn Capital, about Powell's recent remarks on homeless encampments.
\n
\"But if you look at the JOLTS number, which tracks job openings , the evidence might suggest that some small businesses are having trouble finding workers, and that workers might need to be coaxed off the sidelines, because they have been receiving nice stimulus checks.\"
\n
But Duffy also expects the mismatch between job openings and those still out of work to ease this spring, as the weather warms in the northeast at least and more of the U.S. population gets fully vaccinated.
\n
\"A month or two matters, here, a lot,\" he said, in a telephone interview.
\n
Different ammunition
\n
\"What I worry about,\" Bair told MarketWatch, is that Powell's focus on tent cities could end up translating to even more aggressive Fed interventions into markets, which won't benefit lower-income workers who are most vulnerable to losing a job or a home, but instead ratchets up financial risks in the system.
\n
\"I do assume that they stay the course,\" Bair said of Powell's frequent reassurances that benchmark interest rates will stay steady, near zero, through 2023, even if the economy seems to be at an inflection point. \"But at least be more willing to use financial oversight powers to address some of the instabilities this is creating,\" she said.
\n
Despite what others may think, Bair also sees places where the Fed still has ammunition to use, even if it might look different.
\n
\"I would first and foremost make sure we have a stable financial system,\" Bair said. \"If we have another financial crisis, African American households are going to be hit the hardest, along with other lower-income families.\"
\n
\"I do think there is a lot of embedded bias in risk weight [measures and bank capital] requirements ,\" she said, adding that they \"disproportionately impact minority families.\" \"Causation isn't correlation, but at the end of the day, they make it a lot more profitable to lend to rich people.\"
\n
In terms of economic data in the week ahead, the highlight will probably be the release of the first estimate of first quarter economic growth or GDP on Thursday, a day after the Fed policy meeting statement and Powell's press conference on Wednesday.
\n
But investors will also digest U.S. durable and core capital goods orders for March on Monday, followed Tuesday by the latest Case-Shiller home price index, a consumer confidence index and the homeownership rate for the first quarter and Friday will bring data on personal income and spending.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html;
