The stock is up 15% this year, against a 7% decline in the S&amp;P 500. Berkshire has moved ahead of the S&amp;P based on 10-year returns in recent weeks. Berkshire’s class B stock ended Thursday at $344.97, up 2.6%.</p><p>Given its cash and exposure to a stronger U.S. economy, Berkshire Hathaway is an attractive haven for investors.</p><p>“I think a rotation into value names, coupled with Berkshire’s exposure to the energy and utility space…and investors’ enthusiasm for Berkshire’s aggressive share buybacks drove the shares’ performance,” Cathy Seifert, a Berkshire analyst at CFRA Research, said in a LinkedIn post.</p><p>Berkshire CEO Warren Buffett takes no chances with Berkshire’s cash. He has been willing to forgo some investment income by holding Treasury bills rather than higher yielding commercial paper or other short-term instruments. T-bills accounted for $120 billion of Berkshire’s $144 billion of cash at year-end, according to Buffett’s annual shareholder letter.</p><p>With Federal Reserve monetary policy makers anticipating that the benchmark federal-funds rate will be about 2% by year-end and moving toward 2.5% or higher in 2023, Berkshire stands to earn $3 billion or more on its cash in 2023.</p><p>Earlier this week, the Fed lifted its target rate on the fed-funds by a quarter percentage point, to a range of 0.25% from 0.50% in the first of what could be seven rate increases this year.</p><p>The anticipated moves could lift Berkshire’s net earnings by $2.25 billion (assuming a 25% total tax rate) in 2023, or 8%, relative to the $27.5 billion that the company netted after taxes from operations in 2021.</p><p>There should be a favorable impact this year as well on Berkshire’s earnings.</p><p>If Treasury bill rates average 1%, Berkshire’s earnings could get lift of more than $1 billion in 2022. saw the February numbers hit a staggering 7.9% annual rate, with worse to come as the spike in commodity prices due to wide-ranging sanctions against Russia will be reflected even more strongly in the next figures.</p><p>That brings stagflation into the realm of possibilities with rising costs against stagnant economic growth a potential scenario if US CPI passes an annualised 9%.</p><p><b>Market starts higher but is swamped by bad news</b></p><p>After starting higher, the ASX 200 dropped 0.9%, or 67.2 points to 7063.6 points on Friday after the highest US inflation since 1982 with the rising costs also putting intense pressure on the US Federal Reserve to act swiftly to raise official interest rates.</p><p>Technology shares were hit particularly hard with the local stocks chasing a plunging NASDAQ to close down 3.2% on Friday – a fall of more than 20% so far this year.</p><p>The only shares that showed some resilience in the face of determined selling were those that stand to benefit from rising prices – those in the utilities, materials and energy sectors.</p><p><b>Market down on interest rate expectations and slowing economy</b></p><p>Australian investors now need to really take notice of Reserve Bank governor Dr Philip Lowe’s warning to prepare for rising interest rates at the same time as the price of living and commodities is rising sharply and economic growth could be weakening.</p><p>While there were some good days during the week, by the Friday close the ASX200 index was down 0.7% for the week, with the telco sector down 1.6% for the week and down for nine of the last ten weeks.</p><p>On top of the Ukraine war and US inflation caused volatility, there was also some company specific news pushing stock prices around.</p><p><b>Breville gets negative jolt from more coffee</b></p><p>Shares in appliance manufacturer and distributor Breville (ASX: BRG)fell 2.7% to $26.24 after it announced the $170 million acquisition of Italian upmarket coffee machine maker LELIT.</p><p>The acquisition is meant to strengthen Breville’s standing in the coffee market and will be funded on a cash and debt-free basis, with half of the payment in cash and the other half in scrip.</p><p>That potential dilution gave investors an unpleasant jolt despite the potential positives of the acquisition.</p><p><b>Crazy nickel prices end Nickel Mines’ SPP</b></p><p>In other newsNickel Mines (ASX: NIC)responded to crazy trading in the nickel market by announcing the immediate withdrawal of its share purchase plan (SPP).</p><p>The nickel miner said that “applications have far exceeded” the target of $18 million, with $57 million of applications already arriving for new shares.</p><p>There has been some crazy nickel trading on the London Metals Exchange after Xiang “Big Shot”” Guangda’s Tsingshan Holding Group was caught out with some massive short positions on nickel.</p><p>Despite being the world’s biggest nickel producer, the group’s short positions were overtaken by a massive nickel price surge as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine pushed up prices.</p><p>Nickel prices zoomed to a record high above $136,000 a tonne during the week and trading was suspended, causing havoc for other nickel stocks too including Nickel Mines as their share purchase plan was swamped.</p><p>Nickel will continue to be interesting with no clarity on whether Tsingshan’s remaining short positions will remain or be traded.</p><p><b>Zip’s share price falls below SPP</b></p><p>Another share purchase plan causing interest was one by buy now pay later groupZip of the payment in cash and the other half in scrip.That potential dilution gave investors an unpleasant jolt despite the potential positives of the acquisition.Crazy nickel prices end Nickel Mines’ Powell indicated at his post-meeting press conference in early May that the Fed would move forward with half-point rate hikes in June and July as long as economic data came in as expected. It was an unusually precise steer by the Fed chair.</p><p>But in the past few days, inflation figures have surprised to the high side, pushing investors to increase bets on a 75 basis-point increase at this week’s meeting, pricing in interest-rate futures shows. Those bets hardened on Monday afternoon following a report in the Wall Street Journal suggesting the larger move was now in play.</p><h2>Wall Street</h2><p>Economists at major Wall Street firms were quick to change their calls. Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Nomura Holdings Inc. both shifted on Monday to forecast 75 basis point hikes this week and at the Fed’s meeting in late July. JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co. also went to 75 basis points at this week’s meeting, joining Barclays Plc and Jefferies, who modified their calls Friday to the larger increase.</p><p>Powell and his colleagues, facing harsh criticism for being slow to remove emergency pandemic stimulus and allowing inflation to climb by the fastest pace in 40 years, have repeatedly said they would do whatever it takes to cool prices. While the Fed chief laid out a baseline of 50 basis-point increases in June and July, he also hedged by saying that that hinged on the economy evolving along the lines that officials expect.</p><p>On Friday morning, data showed the consumer price index rose 8.6% in May from a year earlier, a fresh 40-year high. The figures topped all estimates and underscored a broad-based advance, a sign that price pressures are becoming entrenched in the economy.</p><p>Later in the morning, University of Michigan data showed US consumer sentiment in early June dropped to the lowest on record. Respondents also said they expect inflation of 3.3% over the next five to 10 years, the most since 2008 and up from 3% in May.</p><p>That’s especially concerning for the Fed, which had been taking comfort in the fact that longer-term inflation expectations have held steady. Any de-anchoring of expectations risks price pressures becoming further embedded in the economy, as consumers anticipating higher prices will also demand higher wages. And if companies are paying employees more, they will have to charge higher prices, perpetuating the cycle.</p><p>On Monday, that risk popped up again in a survey from the New York Fed, which showed one-year ahead median inflation expectations climbed in May to 6.6%,tying the highestreading since the survey began in June 2013. However, three-year ahead projections held steady at 3.9%.</p><h2>Tactical Shift</h2><p>Tactically, a 75 basis-point increase would be a communication shift for Powell who has preferred to telegraph moves in advance and embrace gradualism. That strategy has allowed the Fed to lean in to tighter policy but let markets price the risk of going faster or slower as the data rolled in.</p><p>A 75 basis-point increase could boost credibility by showing the Fed’s serious about its inflation credibility. But it also risks confusing markets about what they do next.</p><p>“Once the Fed starts moving in 75s it would be hard to stop, and the combination of this and the Fed’s outcome-based approach to inflation feels like it could be a recipe for recession,” Evercore ISI’s Krishna Guha and Peter Williams wrote in a note to clients.</p><p>A 75 basis-point move could also erode Fed credibility by underscoring how poor the Fed’s forecasting has been in the post-pandemic recovery.</p><p>June’s meeting includes fresh forecasts for rate over the next couple of years.
