While it is anybody’s guess when this pullback will end, small-cap stocks are looking increasingly attractive to some analysts as a result.</p>\n<p>“We prefer small-caps for the year as a whole, would ride out any short-term underperformance,” Lori Calvasina, chief U.S. equity strategist of RBC Capital Markets, wrote in a Wednesday note.</p>\n<p>Currently, the average market value for theRussell 1000index—which consists of large and smaller capitalization stocks—is about $39 billion. That’s 23 times as large as the average market cap on the Russell 2000, according to RBC data. That metric’s historical average, dating back to 2000, is 21 times. The wider gap between the average market cap suggests that small-caps have more outperformance versus large-caps ahead, especially as they ride earnings momentum from a U.S. economic recovery.</p>\n<p>The Russell 2000’s technical indicators also point to strength ahead for smaller names. The index dipped below its 50-day moving average on Tuesday, and it “has seen many of its best rallies start after such an occurrence,” wrote Frank Cappelleri, chief market technician at Instinet in a note.</p>\n<p>Within small-caps, value stocks might be the best subset for buying the dip. Value-oriented companies are typically more mature companies, so their earnings can be more sensitive to changes in the economy than those of fast-growing companies capitalizing on new industry trends.</p>\n<p>Oil producerDiamondback Energy(ticker: FANG), which has a market capitalization of $13 billion, is a good example of the opportunity in small-cap value. Its shares have fallen about 15% from the 2021 high hit earlier this month. The stock trades at 9 times forward earnings, a steep discount to the Russell 2000 Value index’s 21.5 times.</p>\n<p>Diamondback stock has been about a third more volatile than the broader market, according to FactSet. That means any gains for larger value names could translate to even more upside to smaller value names like Diamondback. That’s especially true if the price of crude oil can get back to $65 a barrel from the current level of $60. In addition, the company’s earnings are expected to more than double this year, and are forecast to grow almost 30% in 2022, according to FactSet. The stock, however, barely reflects such the earnings momentum ahead: It still trades at less than half the forward earnings multiple it has averaged in the past five years.</p>\n<p>In order for the broader group of small-cap stocks to regain momentum, however, their valuations have to be tolerable, too. But unlike in many other places, it's already begun an aggressive rate hike campaign in order to fight inflation. The problem is these rate hikes haven't accomplished much.</p>\n<p>There's a great piece you should read from my Bloomberg colleague Maria Eloisa Capurroabout how despite the hawkish stance of BCB chief Roberto Campos Neto, inflation and inflation expectations in the country continue to rise unabated.</p>\n<p>The problem is that some of the main drivers of inflation are simply beyond the obvious control of the central bank: commodity prices are soaring around the world, and there's been a nearly once-in-a-century drought that's driving up electricity prices. (As much as 70% of Brazil’s&nbsp;energy mix depends onhydroelectricity.)</p>\n<p>But all this just then gets back to a general debate, which applies to Brazil, the U.S., and basically everywhere else: Is turning dials up at the central bank a powerful macro stability tool? In the U.S. we have high inflation readings (at least compared to recent history) but there's a good argument to be made that they're driven by idiosyncratic factors, like the semiconductor shortage and the reopening period. As for the global commodities boom, a huge factor there has been aggressive buying of all types of goods from China (though that buying may be starting to wane).</p>\n<p>There is one obvious way that any central bank can tame inflation: Hike rates so high that you induce a depression, demand plunges and the price of everything collapses. But aside from that, yes, you can sum up a bunch of disparate categories and put them in an index called \"CPI\" or \"PCE\". Warren said that if the Federal Reserve were to issue its own digital currency, consumers could get the benefits of a stablecoin without that kind of risk.</p>\n<p>The U.S. and other nations are already considering launching their own digital currencies. Those coins, known as central bank digital currencies, would be direct competitors to stablecoins. Later this year, theFederal Reserve Bank of Bostonplans to publish research and open-source code showing technology that could underpin a digital dollar. U.S. Dollar Coin, or USDC, has a market value of $23.8 billion and was created by theCentre Consortium, a partnership between crypto payments firmCircle Internet Financial Inc.and U.S. crypto exchangeCoinbase Global Inc.</p>\n<p>Early stablecoin controversies circled aroundTether International Ltd., which originally said its coins were completely backed by cash. In February, New York’s attorney generalsaidthe company for years didn’t actually have the cash it said it did and banned Tether from trading with New York residents. Now the company says Tether’s coin is backed not just by cash, but by assets including commercial paper, corporate bonds and precious metals. The Centre Consortium says each U.S. Dollar Coin is backed by a dollar held in a bank account.</p>\n<p>“Tether embraces transparency and regulation,” said Tether General Counsel Stuart Hoegner, in a statement, noting that the company is registered as a money-services business with the Treasury Department.
