POINTS\n\nThe Federal Open Market Committee’s two-day monetary policy meeting kicks off on Tuesday.\nThe May Producer Price Index is expected to be released at 8:30 a.m. ET.\n\nTreasury yields fell on Tuesday morning, despite anticipation over what the Federal Reserve will say in its two-day policy meeting, which kicks off later in the day.\nThe yield on the benchmark10-year Treasury notefell less than a basis point to 1.484% at 4 a.m. ET. The yield on the30-year Treasury bonddipped to 2.176%. Yields move inversely to prices.\nThe Federal Open Market Committee’s two-day policy meeting wraps up on Wednesday afternoon, followed by a press conference with Fed Chairman Jerome Powell.\nThe Fed is not expected to take any action in its meeting, though investors will be listening to Powell’s comments closely for any signals of the central bank’s eventual asset purchase tapering plans.\nTiffany Wilding, U.S. economist at PIMCO, said on Monday that the investment management firm expected the Fed to upgrade its outlook for growth and “materially revise up the inflation forecast” in its meeting.\n“As a result of the better growth outlook, and despite the transitory nature of the inflation spike, we think the majority of Fed officials will also pull forward their projections for the first rate hike to 2023,” Wilding said, compared to a forecasted rate hike in March 2024.\nWilding added that PIMCO’s base case remained that the Fed would announce a tapering of bond purchases at its December meeting. However, she said that Powell could float the idea that the Fed might consider the possibility of tapering in September, if “inflation is more persistent than expected.”\nIn terms of data due out on Tuesday, May's Producer Price Index is expected to be released at 8:30 a.m. ET. PPI is another inflation gauge, measuring the prices paid to producers rather than on a consumer level.\nThe overall index is expected to rise 0.5% in May, according to Dow Jones estimates. The core PPI — which excludes volatile items like foods, energy and trade services — is also estimated to increase 0.5%.\nRetail sales data for May is also due to be released at 8:30 a.m. ET, along with the NY Empire State manufacturing index for June. Industrial production data for May is then expected to come out at 9:15 a.m. ET.\nThe National Association of Home Builders' housing market index for June is due out at 10 a.m. ET.\nAuctions are due to be held on Tuesday for $34 billion of 52-week bills, $40 billion of 42-week bills and $24 billion of 20-year bonds.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":234,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":187268560,"gmtCreate":1623755757450,"gmtModify":1703818215570,"author":{"id":"3573961167029909","authorId":"3573961167029909","name":"Ericlow5016","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b03dd7522a55b29770205cce66d7ad3a","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3573961167029909","authorIdStr":"3573961167029909"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"<a Certain stocks that have performed well when rates fell in the past might just be big winners again.\nInvestors anticipated higher interest rates this year as the economy reopens, triggering big growth and inflation. Yet despite some high inflation readings, rates have started reversing lower.\nThe May consumer price index came in hotter-than-expected on Thursday, jumping 5% from a year earlier — the fastest pace since 2008. Even so, the 10-year Treasury yield fell as low as 1.43% this week, down from its high for the year of 1.77% and the lowest level in three months.\nCNBC PRO identified eight periods of significant drops in the 10-year Treasury yield over the past decade. We then calculated the median return for S&P 500 stocks during those periods. The stocks below had the best returns during periods when the 10-year yield was falling.\nWhat’s more, we filtered out stocks that are currently not loved by analysts. These stocks have a buy rating from at least 70% of analysts.\nSTOCKS WITH BIG RETURNS DURING FALLING RATE PERIODS\n\n\n\nSYMBOL\nCOMPANY\nSECTOR\n(%) MEDIAN GAIN DURING FALLING RATE PERIODS\n(%) BUY RATING\n\n\n\n\nEQIX\nEquinix, Inc.\nFinance\n27.1\n83.9\n\n\nNVDA\nNVIDIA Corporation\nTechnology\n23.7\n73.8\n\n\nSBAC\nSBA Communications Corp. And history fits that theory, with many tech names making the list of top low-rate performers.\nBig tech names like Amazon,Microsoft and Google-parent Alphabet made CNBC PRO’s screen — and it looks those stocks are already seeing some interest from investors. Amazon, Microsoft and Alphabet are on track to gain a few percentage points this week.\nHigh-growth stock Nvidia is also on the list. Shares of the chip maker are up more than 30% in 2021 and have more than doubled in the past 12 months.\nReal estate investment trusts like Equinix,SBA Communications and Prologis also make CNBC PRO’s list. REITs typically perform well amid lower rates because they pay out a large portion of their revenue to investors in the form of dividends. Lower rates make those steady payouts look more attractive by comparison.\nLam Research,Visa and Caesars Entertainment are other names that have performed well in previous periods of low interest The dry-bulk commodities transportation firm was trading around 20 cents earlier this year until it was swept up in momentum as users of the message board recommended the company, sending shares as high as $1.95.

The stock was identified as a potential gamble using methodology from recently published research paper—from Alok Kumar of the University of Miami, Houng Nguyen of the University of Danang, and Talis Putnins at the University of Technology Sydney and Stockholm School of Economics. The group proposed looking at the average volume over 30 days compared to market cap as a way of determining what they called lottery stocks. “We assume that gambling in stock markets involves disproportionate amount of trading in lottery-like stocks,” they said.

Castor topped the research group’s list of New York Stock Exchange- and Nasdaq-listed companies that were potential “lottery stocks.”Barron’sadded to a filter to the list to look at companies with market caps of at least $500 million andpublished the listin January.

We ran our version of that screen again this month. Rather, Castor Maritime (CTRM). The dry-bulk commodities transportation firm was trading around 20 cents earlier this year until it was swept up in momentum as users of the message board recommended the company, sending shares as high as $1.95.The stock was identified as a potential gamble using methodology from recently published research paper—from Alok Kumar of the University of Miami, Houng Nguyen of the University of Danang, and Talis Putnins at the University of Technology Sydney and Stockholm School of Economics. The group proposed looking at the average volume over 30 days compared to market cap as a way of determining what they called lottery stocks. “We assume that gambling in stock markets involves disproportionate amount of trading in lottery-like stocks,” they said.Castor topped the research group’s list of New York Stock Exchange- and Nasdaq-listed companies that were potential “lottery stocks.”Barron’sadded to a filter to the list to look at companies with market caps of at least $500 million andpublished the listin January. We ran our version of that screen again this month. It competes withAlphabet’s(NASDAQ:GOOGL) YouTube TV,Dish Networks’(NASDAQ:DISH) Sling,ViacomCBS’(NASDAQ:VIAC) Pluto,Walt Disney’s(NYSE:DIS) Hulu + Live TV, Warner-Discovery’sAT&T (NYSE:T) TV andPhilo, owned by a collection of cable operators.
\n
Notice anything about that list? Only one is independent: Fubo. That makes it a pearl of great price, with a market cap of $4.5 billion on 2020 revenue of just $217 million. That’s a fast-moving target, however. During its March quarter, Fubo had revenue of$119 million. As of next week, FUBO stock will join theRussell 3000 index.
\n
It still loses money, but those losses are narrowing as it scales.
\n
Why Buy Fubo?
\n
Fast broadband and the rise of dedicated services likeNetflix(NASDAQ:NFLX) have made streaming cable very attractive over the last two years. Pay $65 a month for streaming cable instead of $150 for the wired variety and you have $85 to buy other streaming services or to put in your pocket.
\n
Fubo initially called itself a “Netflix of sports,” and its lineup remains sports-heavy . An $80 per month “Elite” package offersliterally dozensof national, regional and Spanish-language sports channels.
\n
Fubo, which went public last year, isn’t entirely without bosses.Comcast(NASDAQ:CMCSA), ViacomCBS, and Walt Disneyall have stakes in it,acquired throughcarriage rights. Comcast took a9.3% stakeearly this year.
\n
The Gaming Pitch for FUBO Stock
\n
LikeSinclair Broadcast Group (NASDAQ:SBGI), which changed the name of its regional sports networks toBally’sto get into sports betting, Fubo is also betting on gamblers for growth.
\n
Fubo bought a Chicago-based start-up calledVigtoryin January. It plans to launcha sports betting appin the fourth quarter.
\n
This will put Fubo in competition withDraftKings(NASDAQ:DKNG),Flutter Entertainment(OTCMKTS:PDYPY) and the casino/sportsbook industry. The service will let gamblers watch and bet direct from their couches, as that becomes legal. Recently it added a formerPenn National Gaming(NASDAQ:PENN) executive to thesports gambling unit’s board.
\n
Special Investor Appeal
\n
Fast growth and independence are what make Fubo attractive to investors. Otherwise, why pay 6-15x revenue (depending on how you’re measuring) for a money-losing company with a me-too service?
\n
That’s howLightshed Partnerssaw things last December when they recommended investorsshort the stock. They noticed that most of its cable operator holders had taken stock for carriage rights and expected them to sell. This, however, was before the launch of Fubo Gaming. A subsequent short squeeze sent the stock price as high as $52 a share in February. Shorts then took command into May, sending the stock as low as $16. It opens this morning at about $32.
\n
Our Luke Lango, however, hasthe buy light on. He notes that most consumers have yet to cut the cord, with almost 65% still getting their TV via either cable or broadcasting. With under 600,000 subscribers in the first quarter, Fubo had plenty of room to grow, he wrote, making it the #1 streaming stock to buy.
\n
The Bottom Line
\n
If you’re buying Fubo stock today, you’re expecting a take-out.
\n
As withRoku(NASDAQ:ROKU), with its streaming stick, Fubo is a minnow among sharks. If it has a better way of doing things, the giants who are trailing in these markets want it.
\n
Comcast is the most likely buyer, as they’re reportedly circling bothRokuandViacomCBS. With $254 billion in market cap and over $100 billion in annual revenue, Comcast could easily buy Fubo, too. It would then plead for permission from antitrust authorities because it’s “so small” in relation to competitorsApple(NASDAQ:AAPL),Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) and Google.
\n
But most deals would have to be friendly. It competes withAlphabet’s(NASDAQ:GOOGL) YouTube TV,Dish Networks’(NASDAQ:DISH) Sling,ViacomCBS’(NASDAQ:VIAC) Pluto,Walt Disney’s(NYSE:DIS) Hulu + Live TV, Warner-Discovery’sAT&T (NYSE:T) TV andPhilo, owned by a collection of cable operators.\nNotice anything about that list? Only one is independent: Fubo. That makes it a pearl of great price, with a market cap of $4.5 billion on 2020 revenue of just $217 million. That’s a fast-moving target, however. During its March quarter, Fubo had revenue of$119 million. As of next week, FUBO stock will join theRussell 3000 index.\nIt still loses money, but those losses are narrowing as it scales.\nWhy Buy Fubo?\nFast broadband and the rise of dedicated services likeNetflix(NASDAQ:NFLX) have made streaming cable very attractive over the last two years. Pay $65 a month for streaming cable instead of $150 for the wired variety and you have $85 to buy other streaming services or to put in your pocket.\nFubo initially called itself a “Netflix of sports,” and its lineup remains sports-heavy . An $80 per month “Elite” package offersliterally dozensof national, regional and Spanish-language sports channels.\nFubo, which went public last year, isn’t entirely without bosses.Comcast(NASDAQ:CMCSA), ViacomCBS, and Walt Disneyall have stakes in it,acquired throughcarriage rights. Comcast took a9.3% stakeearly this year.\nThe Gaming Pitch for FUBO Stock\nLikeSinclair Broadcast Group (NASDAQ:SBGI), which changed the name of its regional sports networks toBally’sto get into sports betting, Fubo is also betting on gamblers for growth.\nFubo bought a Chicago-based start-up calledVigtoryin January. It plans to launcha sports betting appin the fourth quarter.\nThis will put Fubo in competition withDraftKings(NASDAQ:DKNG),Flutter Entertainment(OTCMKTS:PDYPY) and the casino/sportsbook industry. The service will let gamblers watch and bet direct from their couches, as that becomes legal. Recently it added a formerPenn National Gaming(NASDAQ:PENN) executive to thesports gambling unit’s board.\nSpecial Investor Appeal\nFast growth and independence are what make Fubo attractive to investors. Otherwise, why pay 6-15x revenue (depending on how you’re measuring) for a money-losing company with a me-too service?\nThat’s howLightshed Partnerssaw things last December when they recommended investorsshort the stock. It opens this morning at about $32.\nOur Luke Lango, however, hasthe buy light on. He notes that most consumers have yet to cut the cord, with almost 65% still getting their TV via either cable or broadcasting. With under 600,000 subscribers in the first quarter, Fubo had plenty of room to grow, he wrote, making it the #1 streaming stock to buy.\nThe Bottom Line\nIf you’re buying Fubo stock today, you’re expecting a take-out.\nAs withRoku(NASDAQ:ROKU), with its streaming stick, Fubo is a minnow among sharks. If it has a better way of doing things, the giants who are trailing in these markets want it.\nComcast is the most likely buyer, as they’re reportedly circling bothRokuandViacomCBS. With $254 billion in market cap and over $100 billion in annual revenue, Comcast could easily buy Fubo, too. It would then plead for permission from antitrust authorities because it’s “so small” in relation to competitorsApple(NASDAQ:AAPL),Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) and Google.\nBut most deals would have to be friendly. Roku and ViacomCBS both have dual-share structures, giving management absolute control. It’s why onlyWarnerMediahas been sold in recent years, and that repeatedly.\nStill, any Comcast bid would likely start a bidding war. If you want to be an arbitrageur, now is the time to get in.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":438,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":161495899,"gmtCreate":1623937519311,"gmtModify":1703823967768,"author":{"id":"3573961167029909","authorId":"3573961167029909","name":"Ericlow5016","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b03dd7522a55b29770205cce66d7ad3a","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3573961167029909","idStr":"3573961167029909"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"<a Certain stocks that have performed well when rates fell in the past might just be big winners again.\nInvestors anticipated higher interest rates this year as the economy reopens, triggering big growth and inflation. That's certainly the case with their top stocks — not one of their runaway winners this year so far is in the S&P 500.","content":"
Millennials are known for making their own reality. And that's certainly the case with their top stocks — not one of their runaway winners this year so far is in the world's most popular index, the S&P 500.
\n
And talk about straying from the mainstream. All 10 of millennials' top performing stocks in 2021 so far, including consumer discretionary play GameStop, health care company Ocugen and communications services firm AMC Entertainment, are brand new holdings for them this year, too.
\n
Not one of these runaway winners was among the top 100 holdings of millennial investors in the fourth quarter, says an Investor's Business Daily analysis of just-released holdings data from Apex Clearing and market data from MarketSmith and S&P Global Market Intelligence. The analysis studies U.S.-based accounts of more than 3 million millennials. The group's average age is 32. And their portfolio is valued at an average of $2,900, up 15% in the quarter. All these winners are up 100% or more this year.
\n
Many of millennials' top holdings are off-the-charts in terms of speculative fever. That includes \"meme stocks\" popularized online, plus penny stocks and special purpose acquisition companies, causing some more experienced investors to shake their heads.
\n
\"Younger investors have recently experienced a lot of volatility — not just in the markets, but in general society — and appear to be willing to experiment and take risks,\" said Apex President Tricia Rothschild. \"We see them investing in technologies and things like crypto, that are far more about the future than they may be about the past.\"
\n
\"Meme\" Stocks Win Over Millennials
\n
Don't go looking for well-worn S&P 500 stocks like Nike, McDonald's and 3M among millennials' top holdings. All those dropped off their top 100 most popular stocks in the first quarter, Apex says.
\n
Instead, millennials went all-in on Meme stocks. These are lesser known stocks like retailer GameStop and AMC. All these jumped in value in early 2021 amid a massive short squeeze. The squeeze is fading now, and it's not working in April anymore. GameStop is down roughly 20% in the past month.
\n
But millennials that got in early are up huge. GameStop was millennials' No. 5 most popular stock in the first quarter. And despite the stock's weakness in April, it's still up nearly 700% this year so far, to 150.48. That makes it Millennials' top stocks this year so far. Should you buy GameStop stock now?
\n
Similarly, theater chain AMC is the No. 7 most popular holding with millennials. It wasn't even in the top 100 in the fourth quarter.
And this time, afternumerous head-fakes—including a one-day surge among tech stocks this week—the comeback seems for real.
\n
“We still have among the biggest spreads in valuation between value and growth stocks that we’ve ever had,” says Motamed. That, plus the promise of fiscal stimulus, has driven up value stocks, which are generally weaker, more cyclical, or more economically sensitive than growth stocks. Consequently. Motamed’s value-oriented fund (ticker: BIVRX), is the No. 1 fund this year in Morningstar’s Long-Short Equity category, with a 26% return.
\n
How wide is the valuation gap? That depends on which metric you use. The most traditional one is price-to-book value, which examines a company’s hard assets. TheRussell 3000 Growth Indexhad aP/B of 11.1at the end of January versus theRussell 3000 Value’sP/B of 2.5. Historically, value managers searched for companies trading below one times book value for bargains. The valuation spread is currently at “the peak of the [2000] tech-bubble levels,” says Rob Arnott, founding chairman of Research Affiliates, which manages $153 billion. “So, I look on this as the first big step in what’s likely to be a long march back for value.”
\n
Yet book value doesn’t measure technology companies well, as they often have little in the way of physical assets. Another metric is the Shiller price/earnings ratio, which normalizes, or smooths out, earnings for stocks in the ratio by averaging them over the past 10 years. U.S. large-cap stocks overall have a 35.5 Shiller P/E, a valuation not seen since their peak of 44 during the 1999-2000 tech bubble. U.S. value stocks have a Shiller P/E of 21.6, and growth 46.8. “If you look at a Shiller P/E ratio, growth is insanely expensive, and value is cheap, relative to the market,” Arnott says, “but not quite cheap relative to its historic norms.” He says value stocks need to fall 5% and growth 50% to achieve fair value in accordance with historic norms.
\n
For this reason, Arnott favors foreign stocks, and emerging market stocks especially, which are cheaper overall than U.S. stocks. Emerging markets value stocks have a 10 Shiller P/E. “I have about half of my liquid assets in emerging markets deep value,” he says.
\n
But someone like Motamed can play the spread in valuation by going long value in gold miner stocks like Kinross Gold(KGC), and short tech stocks likeApple(AAPL) or Shopify(SHOP). “I can buy gold [miner] equities that in many cases are unlevered [zero debt] or becoming unlevered, well below book value, with enormous cash flows,” he says.
\n
Meanwhile, “Apple is just a misrepresentation of a growth company,” Motamed says, pointing to its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization, or Ebitda. “If you look at Apple’s Ebitda, it made $82 billion in 2015. In the last year, it did $86 billion in Ebitda. That’s a 1% growth rate. They’ve saturated their market.”
\n

\n
Some value-oriented managers have a more nuanced view. Chris Davis, chairman of Davis Advisors and manager ofSelected American(SLADX), says there’s a distinction between what he calls “growth stalwarts” likeAlphabet(GOOGL) and more speculative fare. Google, he says, has “incredible cash-generation ability” and a dominant position in search engines that’s nearly impossible to dislodge.
\n
What Davis wants in growth stocks is proven cash flow generation, not expected cash flow years down the road. The distinction between current growth and expected growth is a vital one now because it isn’t just the promise of stimulus driving cyclical value stocks up, but rising interest rates driving high-priced growth stocks down. The stimulus Wall Street expects will cause inflation, which makes bonds with low yields less attractive, so rates on 10-year Treasury notes, after hitting a low of 0.5% last year, are now 1.5%.
\n
Companies with high valuations likeTesla(TSLA), which has a 172 forward P/E, have much of their earnings growth in the future, and consequently have low earnings yields, which is the inverse of their P/E ratios—0.6% in Tesla’s case. Those yields compare more unfavorably to bonds with each increase in rates. “Growth stocks are longer-duration equities,” explains Scott McBride, manager ofHotchkis & Wiley Large Cap Value(HWLAX) “Their cash flows are further out into the future. A move in interest rates has a bigger impact on price, just like it has a bigger impact on the price of long-duration bonds.” Bond prices move inversely with rates, and long-duration ones are more sensitive to rates.
\n
In addition, traditional value sectorscan benefit from rising rates, especially banks, which can increase profit margins on their loans by charging more for them as rates rise. Meanwhile, inflation should drive up prices of hard-asset-based energy, gold mining, and real estate stocks.
\n
That said, some managers think the reversal will be temporary. Mitch Rubin, manager of theRiverPark Long/Short Opportunity(RLSFX), which favors growth stocks, says rates were so low to begin with that what is happening now is really a “period of normalizing stable rates.” Long-term bonds rates below 5% are generally good for growth companies that can borrow cheaply and expand, he says.
\n
Rubin owns Apple and other stocks Motamed is shorting. “We don’t think Apple is done as an innovator,” he says. His fund is up only 1.8% this year, but it has beaten every other long/short fund in the past five years.
\n
Whether he or Motamed wins in the next five years is the question. They’ve saturated their market.”
","source":"market_watch","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
How to Play the Valuation Gap Between Growth and Value Stocks
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nHow to Play the Valuation Gap Between Growth and Value Stocks\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-03-15 21:25 GMT+8 marketwatch\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Monday, Feb. 22, was a great day for Ali Motamed, but a bad one for most investors.
