This stability is entirely fabricated and therefore it lacks the&nbsp;<i>dynamic stability of truly open markets.</i></p>\n<p>Markets that are being distorted/manipulated to achieve a goal that is impossible in truly open markets--for example, markets that only loft higher with near-zero volatility--lull participants into a dangerous perception that because markets are so stable, risk has dissipated.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e420e77dbab689d93ea0a8d481793dd0\" tg-width=\"500\" tg-height=\"430\"></p>\n<p><b>In actuality, risk is skyrocketing beneath the surface of the artificial stability because the market has been stripped of the mechanisms of&nbsp;</b><b><i>dynamic stability</i></b><b>.</b>&nbsp;This artificial stability derived from sustained manipulation has the superficial appearance of low-risk markets, i.e., low levels of volatility, but this lack of volatility derives not from transparency but from behind-the-scenes suppression of volatility.</p>\n<p><b>Another source of risk in distorted markets is the&nbsp;</b><b><i>illusion of liquidity</i></b><b>:</b>&nbsp;in low-volume markets of suppressed volatility, participants are encouraged to believe that they can buy and sell whatever securities they want in whatever volumes they want without disturbing market pricing and liquidity. In other words, participants are led to believe that the market will always have a bid due to the near-infinite depth of liquidity: no matter how many billions of dollars of securities you want to sell, there will always be a bid for your shares.</p>\n<p><b>In actual fact, the bid is paper-thin and it vanishes altogether once selling rises above very low levels.</b>&nbsp;Heavily manipulated markets are exquisitely sensitive to selling because the entire point is to limit any urge to sell while encouraging the greed to increase gains by buying more.</p>\n<p><b>The illusions of low risk, essentially guaranteed gains for those who increase their positions and near-infinite liquidity generate overwhelming incentives to borrow more and leverage it to the hilt to maximize gains.</b>&nbsp;The blissfully delusional punter feels the decision to borrow the maximum available and leverage it to the maximum is entirely rational due to the \"obvious\" absence of risk, the \"obvious\" guaranteed gains offered by markets lofting ever higher like clockwork and the \"obvious\" abundance of liquidity, assuring the punter they can always sell their entire position at today's prices and lock in profits at any time.</p>\n<p><b>On top of all these grossly misleading distortions, punters have been encouraged to believe in the ultimate distortion: the Federal Reserve will never let markets decline again, ever.</b>&nbsp;This is the perfection of&nbsp;<i>moral hazard</i>:&nbsp;<b>risk has been disconnected from consequence.</b></p>\n<p>In this perfection of&nbsp;<i>moral hazard</i>, punters consider it entirely rational to increase extremely risky speculative bets because&nbsp;<b>the Federal Reserve will never let markets decline.</b>&nbsp;Given the abundant evidence behind this assumption, it would be irrational not to ramp up crazy-risky speculative bets to the maximum&nbsp;<b>because losses are now impossible thanks to the Fed's implicit promise to never let markets drop.</b></p>\n<p><b>This is why distorted, manipulated markets always end the same way:</b>&nbsp;first, in an unexpected emergence of risk, which was presumed to be banished; second, a market crash as the paper-thin bid disappears and prices flash-crash to levels that wipe out all those forced to sell by margin calls, and then the collapse of faith in the manipulators (the Fed), collapse of the collateral supporting trillions of dollars in highly leveraged debt and then the collapse of the entire delusion-based financial system.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/db208f6307ade39a0c0f27fcdf7aa080\" tg-width=\"500\" tg-height=\"609\"></p>\n<p><b>Gordon Long and I illuminate the many layers of distortion, manipulation and moral hazard in our new video presentation,&nbsp;It Always Ends The Same Way</b>&nbsp;(34:33). comeback.</p>\n<p>A driver shortage at Uber Technologies Inc. and Lyft Inc. has left city riders frustrated with high fares and long wait times, leading many to step off the curb and raise a hand.</p>\n<p>“Business has been great. I’ve never seen it like this before,” said Tainur Rahman, a taxi driver from the Bronx. Rahman, who has been driving for about a decade, said he’s optimistic about a sustained rebound in the summer months to help make up for profits lost during the dead months of Covid-19 lockdowns.</p>\n<p>Already suffering from an inundation of app-based drivers over the past several years, cabbies were dealt another significant blow by the pandemic, as commuters worked from home, tourists stayed away and no <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> wanted to be in the same car with a stranger. As New York’s economy is revving up again, the number of daily taxi trips in New York City surged more than 800% in April from a year earlier, while app-based platforms like Uber and Lyft jumped some 220%, according to the Taxi &amp; Limousine Commission. That kind of demand, combined with the fact that there are only about <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a>-third of the taxis on the street now compared with before coronavirus restrictions in the city took hold, can also make it hard to find one.</p>\n<p>But it’s not just warmer weather and easing Covid-19 restrictions that have made people more comfortable hailing cabs the old-fashioned way.</p>\n<p>Across the country, demand for ride-hailing has exploded, leaving Uber and Lyft scrambling to recruit drivers. Many have been slow to get back behind the wheel after finding other work or resorting to government stimulus benefits during the pandemic. With fewer drivers on the road, fares have steadily climbed since the beginning of the year, with a ride costing customers 40% more in April, according to research firm Rakuten Intelligence.</p>\n<p>Donna Smiley lives in Washington Heights and commutes to work on the Upper East Side every morning. Since February, she’s been opting to take a taxi instead of ride-share due to the jump in fares.</p>\n<p>“I don’t know why Uber and the other services jacked their prices up so much in the past few months,” Smiley said. Her morning Uber ride used to cost between $20 to $25, but now it’s no less than $30 and can reach almost $50 at peak times. It’s worse during the evening rush. “The cleaner, more comfortable cars of Uber are not worth the huge jump in pricing,” she said.</p>\n<p>For cabbies, the app companies’ plight has been an opportunity for more business. It’s a bright spot for a beleaguered industry that has struggled to recover from a collapse in demand due to digital ride-hailing that deflated the value of taxi medallions and forced many cab drivers -- who were saddled with debt incurred to purchase permits -- into bankruptcy. In March, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced a plan to spend $65 million of the money New York City will receive from the federal stimulus package to help restructure the drivers’ loans. New York Attorney General Letitia James last year accused the city of committing fraud by artificially inflating the value of the medallions, which were sold at auction for more than $1 million in recent years before plummeting below $200,000 after the influx of app-based services.</p>\n<p>But the taxi industry is still far from a full recovery. The number of yellow cabs in New York, which had been declining even before the pandemic, cratered at the height of quarantine. A year later, there are still only an average of 3,800 cabbies on the streets. Ride-hailing apps like Uber and Lyft still account for the vast majority of trips per day, six times as many as yellow cabs, according to data from the TLC.</p>\n<p>Though ride-share’s baseline prices using the companies’ online calculators have actually remained consistent, it’s the more frequent surges that are causing fares to balloon, said Ippei Takahashi, founder and chief executive officer of RideGuru, a platform that helps people compare fares among ride-hailing services and taxis.</p>\n<p>“This doesn’t necessarily mean Uber and Lyft aren’t trying to charge more and capitalizing on this uplift in demand. They have full control over their dynamic pricing algorithm, which is known -- or at least speculated -- to be tweaked often and sometimes even manually,” he said. “I think most people in the industry expect things to stabilize fairly quickly as both customers and drivers return.”</p>\n<p>Both Uber and Lyft said more drivers came back to the platform in May as a result of incentives. “With the economy bouncing back, drivers are returning to Uber in force to take advantage of higher earnings opportunities from our driver stimulus while they are still available,” an Uber spokeswoman said, adding that wait times in New York and Los Angeles -- two key markets -- have “significantly decreased.”</p>\n<p>Part of the reason taxis have been able to capture more of the demand is because of platforms like Curb and Arro, which allow riders to flag a cab with ease through an app, or hail one with a hand and pay in the app. About two-thirds of taxis in New York are equipped with Curb’s technology, according to vice president of mobility Jason Gross, who said the app has become a competitive alternative to Uber and Lyft amid the longer wait times and increased surge pricing.</p>\n<p>Yellow cabs adhere to city-regulated meters which take both time and distance into account and don’t have surge pricing. The basic fee is $2.50 and then about 50 cents per 1/5 mile, in addition to other potential fees, including a $2.50 congestion surcharge. In normal circumstances, taxi fares are about 5% to 10% cheaper than ride-shares, according to Gross, a differential he said has substantially widened in recent months.</p>\n<p>Curb recently rolled out an upgrade that allows riders to see their fare upfront before e-hailing -- a relatively new feature for taxis. That has led to more mobile bookings, which are now double pre-pandemic highs, he said. Monthly downloads of the app grew 24% in May compared with pre-pandemic levels and daily active users jumped 33%, according to market research firm Apptopia.</p>\n<p>Taxi drivers also see taxi apps like Curb as a modern improvement. For Brooklyn cabbie Mohammed Latif, Curb is a safeguard against passengers ducking out without paying their fare, because it’s linked to a credit card. Also, the steady flow of rides has made earnings more stable, he said. “I don’t just have to depend on people being outside waving me down.”</p>\n<p>As the city’s economic rebound solidifies, there will likely be more jockeying for position among drivers and riders will aim to take advantage of a renewed competition.</p>\n<p>Phillip Giambri, a <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/MHC.AU\">Manhattan</a> resident, recently opted to take a Lyft for $37 from LaGuardia Airport after Uber quoted him almost double the price. After waiting 15 minutes, he was told there were no drivers available. Rahman, who has been driving for about a decade, said he’s optimistic about a sustained rebound in the summer months to help make up for profits lost during the dead months of Covid-19 lockdowns.\nAlready suffering from an inundation of app-based drivers over the past several years, cabbies were dealt another significant blow by the pandemic, as commuters worked from home, tourists stayed away and no one wanted to be in the same car with a stranger. As New York’s economy is revving up again, the number of daily taxi trips in New York City surged more than 800% in April from a year earlier, while app-based platforms like Uber and Lyft jumped some 220%, according to the Taxi & Limousine Commission. That kind of demand, combined with the fact that there are only about one-third of the taxis on the street now compared with before coronavirus restrictions in the city took hold, can also make it hard to find one.\nBut it’s not just warmer weather and easing Covid-19 restrictions that have made people more comfortable hailing cabs the old-fashioned way.\nAcross the country, demand for ride-hailing has exploded, leaving Uber and Lyft scrambling to recruit drivers. Many have been slow to get back behind the wheel after finding other work or resorting to government stimulus benefits during the pandemic. With fewer drivers on the road, fares have steadily climbed since the beginning of the year, with a ride costing customers 40% more in April, according to research firm Rakuten Intelligence.\nDonna Smiley lives in Washington Heights and commutes to work on the Upper East Side every morning. Since February, she’s been opting to take a taxi instead of ride-share due to the jump in fares.\n“I don’t know why Uber and the other services jacked their prices up so much in the past few months,” Smiley said. Her morning Uber ride used to cost between $20 to $25, but now it’s no less than $30 and can reach almost $50 at peak times. It’s worse during the evening rush. “The cleaner, more comfortable cars of Uber are not worth the huge jump in pricing,” she said.\nFor cabbies, the app companies’ plight has been an opportunity for more business. It’s a bright spot for a beleaguered industry that has struggled to recover from a collapse in demand due to digital ride-hailing that deflated the value of taxi medallions and forced many cab drivers -- who were saddled with debt incurred to purchase permits -- into bankruptcy. In March, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced a plan to spend $65 million of the money New York City will receive from the federal stimulus package to help restructure the drivers’ loans. New York Attorney General Letitia James last year accused the city of committing fraud by artificially inflating the value of the medallions, which were sold at auction for more than $1 million in recent years before plummeting below $200,000 after the influx of app-based services.\nBut the taxi industry is still far from a full recovery. The number of yellow cabs in New York, which had been declining even before the pandemic, cratered at the height of quarantine. A year later, there are still only an average of 3,800 cabbies on the streets. Ride-hailing apps like Uber and Lyft still account for the vast majority of trips per day, six times as many as yellow cabs, according to data from the TLC.\nThough ride-share’s baseline prices using the companies’ online calculators have actually remained consistent, it’s the more frequent surges that are causing fares to balloon, said Ippei Takahashi, founder and chief executive officer of RideGuru, a platform that helps people compare fares among ride-hailing services and taxis.\n“This doesn’t necessarily mean Uber and Lyft aren’t trying to charge more and capitalizing on this uplift in demand. They have full control over their dynamic pricing algorithm, which is known -- or at least speculated -- to be tweaked often and sometimes even manually,” he said. “I think most people in the industry expect things to stabilize fairly quickly as both customers and drivers return.”\nBoth Uber and Lyft said more drivers came back to the platform in May as a result of incentives. “With the economy bouncing back, drivers are returning to Uber in force to take advantage of higher earnings opportunities from our driver stimulus while they are still available,” an Uber spokeswoman said, adding that wait times in New York and Los Angeles -- two key markets -- have “significantly decreased.”\nPart of the reason taxis have been able to capture more of the demand is because of platforms like Curb and Arro, which allow riders to flag a cab with ease through an app, or hail one with a hand and pay in the app. About two-thirds of taxis in New York are equipped with Curb’s technology, according to vice president of mobility Jason Gross, who said the app has become a competitive alternative to Uber and Lyft amid the longer wait times and increased surge pricing.\nYellow cabs adhere to city-regulated meters which take both time and distance into account and don’t have surge pricing. The basic fee is $2.50 and then about 50 cents per 1/5 mile, in addition to other potential fees, including a $2.50 congestion surcharge. In normal circumstances, taxi fares are about 5% to 10% cheaper than ride-shares, according to Gross, a differential he said has substantially widened in recent months.\nCurb recently rolled out an upgrade that allows riders to see their fare upfront before e-hailing -- a relatively new feature for taxis. That has led to more mobile bookings, which are now double pre-pandemic highs, he said. Monthly downloads of the app grew 24% in May compared with pre-pandemic levels and daily active users jumped 33%, according to market research firm Apptopia.\nTaxi drivers also see taxi apps like Curb as a modern improvement. Biden planned to almost double the capital gains tax, news analysts said provided an excuse to take profits in a directionless market ahead of big tech's earnings next week.</p><p>The three main indexes on Wall Street also fell on reports that Biden planned to raise income taxes on the wealthy, a proposal some said would be hard to pass in Congress.</p><p>\"If it had a chance of passing, we'd be down 2,000 points,\" said Thomas Hayes, chairman and managing member at hedge fund Great Hill Capital LLC.</p><p>Paul Nolte, portfolio manager at Kingsview Investment Management in Chicago, said when a proposal is floated about raising taxes or capital gains, everybody gets excited, sells first and asks questions later.</p><p>\"It is more of a short-term, knee-jerk reaction,\" he said.</p><p>Biden will propose raising the marginal income tax rate to 39.6% from 37% and nearly double capital gains taxes to 39.6% for people earning more than $1 million, sources told Reuters.</p><p>The proposal targets about $1 trillion for child care, universal pre-kindergarten education and paid leave for workers, the sources said.</p><p>Markets have been listless after the Dow    and S&amp;P 500&nbsp;scaled all-time peaks last week as investors await guidance from Microsoft Corp   , Google parent Alphabet Inc    and <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/FB\">Facebook</a> Inc    when they report earnings next week.</p><p>\"Until we get out of this information vacuum the market is going to be generally directionless,\" he said. \"All that really matters moving forward is what are those big tech earnings next week?\"</p><p>During the session, the S&amp;P 500 healthcare sector hit a fresh record high while industrials were the biggest gainers.</p><p>American Airlines Group Inc and Southwest Airlines Co    reported smaller-than-expected quarterly losses, signaling a revival in travel demand. Both shares fell.</p><p>Investors welcomed data showing the number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits last week dropped to a fresh <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a>-year low. The Labor Department report suggested layoffs were subsiding and expectations were rising for another month of blockbuster job growth in April.</p><p>The speedy U.S. vaccination rollout has improved the economic outlook as people plan summer vacations and leisure spending, but a surge in COVID-19 cases in India and elsewhere in Asia has kept investors anxious, Hayes said.</p><p>Equities have likely reached a near-term top as expectations are too high, said Randy Frederick, vice president of trading and derivatives at Charles Schwab.</p><p>\"There's going to be continued positive moves throughout the remainder of the year but we are due for some sort of a pullback in the very short term,\" he said. \"Then the dip buyers will step back in.\"</p><p>First-quarter earnings are expected to increase 31.9% from a year ago, the highest rate since the fourth quarter, according to IBES Refinitiv data.</p><p>All 11 S&amp;P 500 sectors closed lower as Microsoft, Apple Inc , Amazon.com Inc and Tesla Inc weighted the most on the downdraft.</p><p>The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.94% to 33,815.9, the S&amp;P 500 lost 0.92% at 4,134.98, and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.94% to 13,818.41.</p><p>Volume on U.S. exchanges was 10.35 billion shares, compared with the 10.32 billion full-session average over the last 20 trading days.</p><p>Chipmaker Intel Corp forecast second-quarter revenue above Wall Street targets, betting its next generation of processors for data centers and PCs will meet growing demand for cloud-based services. I’ve never seen it like this before,” said Tainur Rahman, a taxi driver from the Bronx. Rahman, who has been driving for about a decade, said he’s optimistic about a sustained rebound in the summer months to help make up for profits lost during the dead months of Covid-19 lockdowns.</p>\n<p>Already suffering from an inundation of app-based drivers over the past several years, cabbies were dealt another significant blow by the pandemic, as commuters worked from home, tourists stayed away and no <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> wanted to be in the same car with a stranger. As New York’s economy is revving up again, the number of daily taxi trips in New York City surged more than 800% in April from a year earlier, while app-based platforms like Uber and Lyft jumped some 220%, according to the Taxi &amp; Limousine Commission. That kind of demand, combined with the fact that there are only about <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a>-third of the taxis on the street now compared with before coronavirus restrictions in the city took hold, can also make it hard to find one.</p>\n<p>But it’s not just warmer weather and easing Covid-19 restrictions that have made people more comfortable hailing cabs the old-fashioned way.</p>\n<p>Across the country, demand for ride-hailing has exploded, leaving Uber and Lyft scrambling to recruit drivers. Many have been slow to get back behind the wheel after finding other work or resorting to government stimulus benefits during the pandemic. With fewer drivers on the road, fares have steadily climbed since the beginning of the year, with a ride costing customers 40% more in April, according to research firm Rakuten Intelligence.</p>\n<p>Donna Smiley lives in Washington Heights and commutes to work on the Upper East Side every morning. Since February, she’s been opting to take a taxi instead of ride-share due to the jump in fares.</p>\n<p>“I don’t know why Uber and the other services jacked their prices up so much in the past few months,” Smiley said. Her morning Uber ride used to cost between $20 to $25, but now it’s no less than $30 and can reach almost $50 at peak times. It’s worse during the evening rush. “The cleaner, more comfortable cars of Uber are not worth the huge jump in pricing,” she said.</p>\n<p>For cabbies, the app companies’ plight has been an opportunity for more business. It’s a bright spot for a beleaguered industry that has struggled to recover from a collapse in demand due to digital ride-hailing that deflated the value of taxi medallions and forced many cab drivers -- who were saddled with debt incurred to purchase permits -- into bankruptcy. In March, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced a plan to spend $65 million of the money New York City will receive from the federal stimulus package to help restructure the drivers’ loans. New York Attorney General Letitia James last year accused the city of committing fraud by artificially inflating the value of the medallions, which were sold at auction for more than $1 million in recent years before plummeting below $200,000 after the influx of app-based services.</p>\n<p>But the taxi industry is still far from a full recovery. The number of yellow cabs in New York, which had been declining even before the pandemic, cratered at the height of quarantine. A year later, there are still only an average of 3,800 cabbies on the streets. Ride-hailing apps like Uber and Lyft still account for the vast majority of trips per day, six times as many as yellow cabs, according to data from the TLC.</p>\n<p>Though ride-share’s baseline prices using the companies’ online calculators have actually remained consistent, it’s the more frequent surges that are causing fares to balloon, said Ippei Takahashi, founder and chief executive officer of RideGuru, a platform that helps people compare fares among ride-hailing services and taxis.</p>\n<p>“This doesn’t necessarily mean Uber and Lyft aren’t trying to charge more and capitalizing on this uplift in demand. They have full control over their dynamic pricing algorithm, which is known -- or at least speculated -- to be tweaked often and sometimes even manually,” he said. “I think most people in the industry expect things to stabilize fairly quickly as both customers and drivers return.”</p>\n<p>Both Uber and Lyft said more drivers came back to the platform in May as a result of incentives. “With the economy bouncing back, drivers are returning to Uber in force to take advantage of higher earnings opportunities from our driver stimulus while they are still available,” an Uber spokeswoman said, adding that wait times in New York and Los Angeles -- two key markets -- have “significantly decreased.”</p>\n<p>Part of the reason taxis have been able to capture more of the demand is because of platforms like Curb and Arro, which allow riders to flag a cab with ease through an app, or hail one with a hand and pay in the app. About two-thirds of taxis in New York are equipped with Curb’s technology, according to vice president of mobility Jason Gross, who said the app has become a competitive alternative to Uber and Lyft amid the longer wait times and increased surge pricing.</p>\n<p>Yellow cabs adhere to city-regulated meters which take both time and distance into account and don’t have surge pricing. The basic fee is $2.50 and then about 50 cents per 1/5 mile, in addition to other potential fees, including a $2.50 congestion surcharge. In normal circumstances, taxi fares are about 5% to 10% cheaper than ride-shares, according to Gross, a differential he said has substantially widened in recent months.</p>\n<p>Curb recently rolled out an upgrade that allows riders to see their fare upfront before e-hailing -- a relatively new feature for taxis. That has led to more mobile bookings, which are now double pre-pandemic highs, he said. Monthly downloads of the app grew 24% in May compared with pre-pandemic levels and daily active users jumped 33%, according to market research firm Apptopia.</p>\n<p>Taxi drivers also see taxi apps like Curb as a modern improvement. For Brooklyn cabbie Mohammed Latif, Curb is a safeguard against passengers ducking out without paying their fare, because it’s linked to a credit card. Also, the steady flow of rides has made earnings more stable, he said. “I don’t just have to depend on people being outside waving me down.”</p>\n<p>As the city’s economic rebound solidifies, there will likely be more jockeying for position among drivers and riders will aim to take advantage of a renewed competition.</p>\n<p>Phillip Giambri, a <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/MHC.AU\">Manhattan</a> resident, recently opted to take a Lyft for $37 from LaGuardia Airport after Uber quoted him almost double the price. After waiting 15 minutes, he was told there were no drivers available. As New York’s economy is revving up again, the number of daily taxi trips in New York City surged more than 800% in April from a year earlier, while app-based platforms like Uber and Lyft jumped some 220%, according to the Taxi & Limousine Commission. That kind of demand, combined with the fact that there are only about one-third of the taxis on the street now compared with before coronavirus restrictions in the city took hold, can also make it hard to find one.\nBut it’s not just warmer weather and easing Covid-19 restrictions that have made people more comfortable hailing cabs the old-fashioned way.\nAcross the country, demand for ride-hailing has exploded, leaving Uber and Lyft scrambling to recruit drivers. Many have been slow to get back behind the wheel after finding other work or resorting to government stimulus benefits during the pandemic. With fewer drivers on the road, fares have steadily climbed since the beginning of the year, with a ride costing customers 40% more in April, according to research firm Rakuten Intelligence.\nDonna Smiley lives in Washington Heights and commutes to work on the Upper East Side every morning. Since February, she’s been opting to take a taxi instead of ride-share due to the jump in fares.\n“I don’t know why Uber and the other services jacked their prices up so much in the past few months,” Smiley said. Her morning Uber ride used to cost between $20 to $25, but now it’s no less than $30 and can reach almost $50 at peak times. It’s worse during the evening rush. “The cleaner, more comfortable cars of Uber are not worth the huge jump in pricing,” she said.\nFor cabbies, the app companies’ plight has been an opportunity for more business. It’s a bright spot for a beleaguered industry that has struggled to recover from a collapse in demand due to digital ride-hailing that deflated the value of taxi medallions and forced many cab drivers -- who were saddled with debt incurred to purchase permits -- into bankruptcy. In March, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced a plan to spend $65 million of the money New York City will receive from the federal stimulus package to help restructure the drivers’ loans. New York Attorney General Letitia James last year accused the city of committing fraud by artificially inflating the value of the medallions, which were sold at auction for more than $1 million in recent years before plummeting below $200,000 after the influx of app-based services.\nBut the taxi industry is still far from a full recovery. The number of yellow cabs in New York, which had been declining even before the pandemic, cratered at the height of quarantine. A year later, there are still only an average of 3,800 cabbies on the streets. Ride-hailing apps like Uber and Lyft still account for the vast majority of trips per day, six times as many as yellow cabs, according to data from the TLC.\nThough ride-share’s baseline prices using the companies’ online calculators have actually remained consistent, it’s the more frequent surges that are causing fares to balloon, said Ippei Takahashi, founder and chief executive officer of RideGuru, a platform that helps people compare fares among ride-hailing services and taxis.\n“This doesn’t necessarily mean Uber and Lyft aren’t trying to charge more and capitalizing on this uplift in demand. They have full control over their dynamic pricing algorithm, which is known -- or at least speculated -- to be tweaked often and sometimes even manually,” he said. “I think most people in the industry expect things to stabilize fairly quickly as both customers and drivers return.”\nBoth Uber and Lyft said more drivers came back to the platform in May as a result of incentives. “With the economy bouncing back, drivers are returning to Uber in force to take advantage of higher earnings opportunities from our driver stimulus while they are still available,” an Uber spokeswoman said, adding that wait times in New York and Los Angeles -- two key markets -- have “significantly decreased.”\nPart of the reason taxis have been able to capture more of the demand is because of platforms like Curb and Arro, which allow riders to flag a cab with ease through an app, or hail one with a hand and pay in the app. About two-thirds of taxis in New York are equipped with Curb’s technology, according to vice president of mobility Jason Gross, who said the app has become a competitive alternative to Uber and Lyft amid the longer wait times and increased surge pricing.\nYellow cabs adhere to city-regulated meters which take both time and distance into account and don’t have surge pricing. The basic fee is $2.50 and then about 50 cents per 1/5 mile, in addition to other potential fees, including a $2.50 congestion surcharge. In normal circumstances, taxi fares are about 5% to 10% cheaper than ride-shares, according to Gross, a differential he said has substantially widened in recent months.\nCurb recently rolled out an upgrade that allows riders to see their fare upfront before e-hailing -- a relatively new feature for taxis. That has led to more mobile bookings, which are now double pre-pandemic highs, he said. Monthly downloads of the app grew 24% in May compared with pre-pandemic levels and daily active users jumped 33%, according to market research firm Apptopia.\nTaxi drivers also see taxi apps like Curb as a modern improvement. For Brooklyn cabbie Mohammed Latif, Curb is a safeguard against passengers ducking out without paying their fare, because it’s linked to a credit card. Also, the steady flow of rides has made earnings more stable, he said. “I don’t just have to depend on people being outside waving me down.”\nAs the city’s economic rebound solidifies, there will likely be more jockeying for position among drivers and riders will aim to take advantage of a renewed competition.\nPhillip Giambri, a Manhattan resident, recently opted to take a Lyft for $37 from LaGuardia Airport after Uber quoted him almost double the price. After waiting 15 minutes, he was told there were no drivers available. TheVanguard S&amp;P 500 Growth Index Fund ETF(VOOG) is down about 4% from its yearly peak hit around the same time.</p>\n<p>Rising interest rates have done most of the damage, with the 10-year Treasury yield up to as high as 1.41% Wednesday from 1.1% in early February. Higher rates erode the value of future cash flows, but more so for growth companies than for more mature businesses because growth firms expect to see a large share of their profits come farther down the line. Smaller, less profitable names are most sensitive because they are largely less profitable at present.</p>\n<p>There’s plenty of backbone to the buy-the-dip argument.</p>\n<p>Growth stocks bounced off of their intraday low Tuesday morning as Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell spoke.Powell emphasized the Fed’s policy to keep interest rates lowfor as long as the economy needs, as the recovery is not yet fully through. Interest rates backed off of their general rise and right on cue, the Russell 2000 Growth Index jumped a few percentage points from its low on the day. “Growth/momentum rebounded sharply following Fed Chair Powell’s testimony yesterday morning,” Chris Senyek, chief investment strategist at Wolfe Research wrote in a Wednesday note. So if rates calm down, growth stocks may very well resume rising.</p>\n<p>Powell’s comments matter. Rates may not exhibit too many fast jumps on an ongoing basis. “The Fed’s extreme dovishness persists—buy liquidity beneficiaries,” Senyeck wrote. Simply put, Senyeck recommends buying stocks that benefit when rates are low and liquidity, which often means the easy availability of money, is flowing. That’s against theWall Street consensus viewthat rates are on a sustainable path higher, as inflation and economic demand strengthen. Powell must remind that the Fed is committed to its current policies that support low rates, butinvestors are preparing for the Fed to alter its position at some point within the next year or so. Higher rates will likely remain a pressure point for growth valuations.</p>\n<p>Still, there’s a silver lining in favor of the call for growth stocks. Sure, valuation pressure may persist, but sales and earnings growth is the other side of the equation—and those look strong. So whilemultiples on those near-term results may have limited upside, the results, themselves may impress.Okta(OKTA), for example, a $34 billion by market cap provider of business data management, is expected to see sales grow by more than two-thirds over the next 3 years, while turning profitable by 2023, according to FactSet data. The stock is down almost 10% from its 2021 peak hit in February. TheVanguard S&P 500 Growth Index Fund ETF(VOOG) is down about 4% from its yearly peak hit around the same time.\nRising interest rates have done most of the damage, with the 10-year Treasury yield up to as high as 1.41% Wednesday from 1.1% in early February. Higher rates erode the value of future cash flows, but more so for growth companies than for more mature businesses because growth firms expect to see a large share of their profits come farther down the line. Smaller, less profitable names are most sensitive because they are largely less profitable at present.\nThere’s plenty of backbone to the buy-the-dip argument.\nGrowth stocks bounced off of their intraday low Tuesday morning as Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell spoke.Powell emphasized the Fed’s policy to keep interest rates lowfor as long as the economy needs, as the recovery is not yet fully through. Interest rates backed off of their general rise and right on cue, the Russell 2000 Growth Index jumped a few percentage points from its low on the day. “Growth/momentum rebounded sharply following Fed Chair Powell’s testimony yesterday morning,” Chris Senyek, chief investment strategist at Wolfe Research wrote in a Wednesday note. So if rates calm down, growth stocks may very well resume rising.\nPowell’s comments matter. Rates may not exhibit too many fast jumps on an ongoing basis. “The Fed’s extreme dovishness persists—buy liquidity beneficiaries,” Senyeck wrote. Simply put, Senyeck recommends buying stocks that benefit when rates are low and liquidity, which often means the easy availability of money, is flowing. That’s against theWall Street consensus viewthat rates are on a sustainable path higher, as inflation and economic demand strengthen. Powell must remind that the Fed is committed to its current policies that support low rates, butinvestors are preparing for the Fed to alter its position at some point within the next year or so. Higher rates will likely remain a pressure point for growth valuations.\nStill, there’s a silver lining in favor of the call for growth stocks. Sure, valuation pressure may persist, but sales and earnings growth is the other side of the equation—and those look strong. So whilemultiples on those near-term results may have limited upside, the results, themselves may impress.Okta(OKTA), for example, a $34 billion by market cap provider of business data management, is expected to see sales grow by more than two-thirds over the next 3 years, while turning profitable by 2023, according to FactSet data. The stock is down almost 10% from its 2021 peak hit in February.
