The company was created just over a decade ago with the genesis of bitcoin  and is now in the midst of a moment that many in the industry have described as a tipping point .</p><p>There are few ways to get direct ownership of crypto currencies, outside of buying them directly, a service that Coinbase provides for a fee, and what investors appear willing to be pay up for.</p><p>Leeor Shimron, analyst at FundStrat Global Advisors, described the Coinbase listing as seminal. \"Coinbase's direct listing is a watershed moment for the crypto industry.\"</p><p>Wedbush analyst Dan Ives said the listing is a reflection of the crypto's mainstream evolution.</p><p>\"Coinbase is a foundational piece of the crypto ecosystem and is a barometer for the growing mainstream adoption of Bitcoin and crypto for the coming years in our opinion,\" he wrote in a research note Tuesday.</p><p>Some caution that the implied valuations for Coinbase as a crypto exchange are too lofty , the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange.</p><p>In a direct listing, a company floats its shares on a stock exchange, but without hiring banks to underwrite the transaction, like in an IPO.</p><p>Here's what you need to know about the coming offering.</p><p><b>What is Coinbase?</b></p><p>The Silicon Valley crypto exchange was co-founded in 2012 by Brian Armstrong, 38, who runs the platform as chief executive. Fred Ehrsam, a Coinbase director, also helped to create the company.</p><p>According to Forbes , Armstrong's networth is currently $6.5 billion based on his ownership in the company and his wealth is likely to increase if the direct listing goes off successfully.</p><p><b>When will Coinbase go public?</b></p><p>Coinbase will list on April 14. The precise timing of the list isn't clear but <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/PLTR\">Palantir Technologies Inc.</a>'s (PLTR)direct listing   after 1:30 p.m. Eastern Time.</p><p><b>Where will it list?</b></p><p>Coinbase is set to go public on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol \"COIN\" as a direct listing, meaning it isn't raising any new money, as a company would under a traditional IPO.</p><p>Coinbase is the Nasdaq's first major direct listing, with Spotify <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/SPOT\">$(SPOT)$</a>, <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/WORK\">Slack Technologies</a> (WORK) and most recently Palantir Technologies (PLTR) all opting to directly list at the NYSE.</p><p><b>Valuations?</b></p><p>Valuations for Coinbase vary from $50 billion to $150 billion based on some decentralized crypto platforms that attempt to replicate how the company's shares might trade. At the top end of the spectrum, Coinbase would be bigger than a number of U.S. exchanges, including ICE, Nasdaq, CME Group <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CME\">$(CME)$</a> and Cboe Global Markets <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CBOE\">$(CBOE)$</a>.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d2200134a14a3d37a8a656d85f6906c0\" tg-width=\"955\" tg-height=\"657\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p>David Trainer, CEO of New Constructs, an investment research firm, said the crypto platform's value is ridiculously high. \"Even though Coinbase's revenue surged over the past 12 months, the company has little-to-no-chance of meeting the future profit expectations that are baked into its ridiculously high expected valuation of $100 billion,\" he said.</p><p>\"Coinbase's expected valuation of $100 billion implies that its revenue will be 1.5x the combined 2020 revenues of two of the most established exchanges in the marketplace, Nasdaq Inc. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/NDAQ\">$(NDAQ)$</a> and Intercontinental Exchange <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/ICE\">$(ICE)$</a>, the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange,\" he said.</p><p>Trainer said that based on his calculation, Coinbase's valuation should be closer to $18.9 billion--an 81% decrease from the $100 billion expected valuation.</p><p><b>'Not for the faint of heart'</b></p><p>MoffettNathanson analyst Lisa Ellis explained to MarketWatch why the offering is, as she describes it \"not for the faint of heart,\" but why she initiated coverage of the exchange at a buy with a price-target of $600, even before it sees its first trade on the Nasdaq.</p><p>\"I'm super super bullish on Coinbase...because you get the sense that they are a market leader in the space and crypto agnostic,\" she said.</p><p>That said, she acknowledges that currently 90% of Coinbase's revenues are derived directly from retail trading, with most in the U.S. and trading centered primarily on the two largest cryptos: bitcoin and Ether  on the ethereum blockchain.</p><p>\"So the implications is that Coinbase's revenues are correlated with the level of activity in cryto currency and especially bitcoin and ether.\"</p><p>Ellis says investors need to have at least a one-year long-term investment strategy in bitcoin, which could still go to zero by some bearish accounts, but a three-year outlook is even better, because the crypto complex has tended to operate in three-year cycles of boom and then bust.</p><p><b>Validation for crypto or a top?</b></p><p>Some bulls see Coinbase as validation for the nascent crpyto industry.</p><p>Alex Mashinsky, head of crypto-lending and trading platform Celsius Network, put it this way:</p><p>\"We look at the Coinbase listing as an additional validation of the space, and a major PR opportunity for the entire industry to shine as the future of finance,\" he told MarketWatch via email.</p><p>\"Coinbase has more users and more revenues than many of the largest Wall Street players and is more profitable than any major exchange, and this validation puts most skeptics at a crossroads having to re-evaluate their denial and frustration with the disruption coming at them from all sides.\"</p><p>Others suggest that it may prove a new top for the market and put crypto prices under pressure after a precipitous rally in recent days and a fresh record for bitcoin.</p><p>Yves Lamoureux, the president of Montreal-based macroeconomic research firm Lamoureux &amp; Co., told MarketWatch that he is fearful that too much euphoria surrounds bitcoin and crypto and sees it due for a retrenchment as a result. \"Can you find out-there anyone with a bearish viewpoint?\" he asked. \"A resounding no,\" said Lamoureux.</p><p><b>Is Coinbase the largest crypto exchange?</b></p><p>Coinbase is the second-largest crypto platform, but the largest in the U.S., by volume. The title of largest goes to Binance, which sees $47 billion in crypto trading volume in a 24-hour period, according to CoinMarketCap.com .</p><p><b>Who else owns Coinbase?</b></p><p>Venture-capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, is the largest owner of Coinbase, boasting about 25% of Class A shares  and 14%% of Class B. In comparison, Tesla’s Model 3 in China starts at 249,900 yuan.Wu said the P5 would roll out to customers in China in the third or fourth quarter of this year. Xpeng has also expanded into Norway, its first international market. Wu said that the company will expand its footprint in northern Europe and the P5 would eventually be launched there. He gave no timelines on when this might happen.Driverless techXpeng has tried to push the advancement of its self-driving features to differentiate from its competitors.The P5 is equipped with so-called Lidar, or Light Detection and Ranging technology. Lidar systems send out lasers that bounce back and can measure distance. Those returning beams are processed by an algorithm to create a three dimensional representation of surrounding objects — a key technology for autonomous vehicles to understand their environment.Xpeng claims that Lidar can help the P5 distinguish pedestrians, cyclists and scooters as well as road works — even at night and under low-light conditions.On Wednesday, the Chinese vehicle maker also released a new version ofXPILOT, its so-called advanced driver-assistancesystem (ADAS). This refers to a system with some autonomous features but where a driver is still required.XPILOT 3.5 will have an updated version of afeature called Navigation Guided Pilot or NGP, which allows users to autonomously do tasks such as changing lanes or overtaking cars. Some of these features will work on city roads for the first time. Things might look great now, but the next big nosedive is always waiting in the wings.</p>\n<p>It begs the question: How likely is astock market crash? Let's take a closer look.</p>\n<p><b>Double-digit declines occur every 1.87 years, on average</b></p>\n<p>To begin with the basics, stock market corrections (i.e., declines of at least 10%) are quite common in the S&amp;P 500. According to data from market analytics firm Yardeni Research, there have been 38 corrections in the S&amp;P 500 since the beginning of 1950. This works out to an average double-digit decline in the benchmark indexevery 1.87 years. Since it's now been more than a year since the market hit its bear-market bottom, the averages are certainly not in investors' favor.</p>\n<p>However, averages are nothing more than that... averages. The market doesn't adhere to averages, even if some folks base their investments off of what's happened historically.</p>\n<p>We could enter a period similar to 1991 through 1996 where there were zero corrections. Or we could continue the theme since the beginning of 2010, where corrections occur, on average, every 19 months.</p>\n<p><b>Corrections have been an historical given within three years of a bear market bottom</b></p>\n<p>Another interesting piece of evidence to examine is the frequency by which the S&amp;P 500 corrects after hitting a bear-market bottom.</p>\n<p>Since the beginning of 1960 (an arbitrary year I chose for the sake of simplicity), the widely followed index has navigated its way through nine bear markets, including the coronavirus crash. In rebounding from each of the previous eight bear market lows, there was at least one double-digit percentage decline within three years100% of the time. In aggregate, 13 corrections have occurred within three years following the last eight bear market bottoms (i.e., either one or two following each bottom).</p>\n<p>Put another way, rebounding from a bear-market bottom is rarely a straight-line move higher. Yet up, up, and away has pretty much been the theme for investors since March 23, 2020. History would suggest that there's a very good chance of a move lower in equities within the next two years.</p>\n<p><b>Crashes frequently occur when this valuation metric is hit</b></p>\n<p>But the most damning bit of evidence might just be the S&amp;P 500's Shiller price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio. This is a valuation metric that examines the average inflation-adjusted earnings from the previous 10 years. You might also know it as the cyclically adjusted P/E ratio, or CAPE.</p>\n<p>As of the close of business on March 30, the S&amp;P 500's Shiller P/E ratio hit 35.61. That's well over double its 150-year average of 16.8. Using continuous bull market moves as a parameter, it's the second-highest reading in its history.</p>\n<p>To some extent, itmakes sensethat equity valuations should be higher now than they've been historically. That's because interest rates are near an all-time low and access to the internet has effectively broken down barriers between Wall Street and Main Street that may have, in the past, kept P/E multiples at bay.</p>\n<p>However, previous instances of the S&amp;P 500's Shiller P/E ratio crossing above and sustaining the 30 levelhaven't ended well. In the prior four instances where the Shiller P/E surpassed and held above 30, the benchmark index tumbled anywhere from 20% to as much as 89%. Although an 89% plunge, which was experienced during the Great Depression, is very unlikely these days, a big drop has historically been in the cards when valuations get extended, as they are now.</p>\n<p><b>Keep that cash handy in the event that opportunity knocks</b></p>\n<p>To circle back to the original question at hand, the data is pretty clear that the likelihood of a stock market crash or correction has grown considerably. Just think about all the great companies you're probably kicking yourself over for not buying last March.</p>\n<p>The reason to be excited about crashes and corrections is also found in the data. You see, of those 38 previous corrections in the S&amp;P 500 since the beginning of 1950, each and every one has eventually been put into the rearview mirror by a bull market rally. Plus,at no point over the past centuryhave rolling 20-year total returns (including dividends) for the S&amp;P 500 been negative.</p>\n<p>If you need further encouragement to buy during a correction, keep in mind that 24 of the 38 double-digit declines in the S&amp;P 500 havefound their bottom in 104 or fewer calendar days(3.5 months or less). The&nbsp;change of focus&nbsp;is telling. Having spooled out incentives to foster mass EV adoption&nbsp;– the government has delivered&nbsp;more than 52 billion yuan ($8 billion) in subsidies, for example – China now is focused on ensuring the necessary infrastructure is in place to support the sector for the long&nbsp;term. This change will, in time,&nbsp;create pockets of opportunity in areas that may not&nbsp;immediately be apparent.</p><p>Take EV charging. Insufficient charging facilities have been cited as one of the key obstacles hindering EV development in China. While the situation is more advanced than&nbsp;in the U.S. —&nbsp;as BNEF analyst and Hyperdrive writer&nbsp;Colin McKerracher recently pointed out, China installed 112,000 public EV charging points in December alone, more than the entire U.S. public charging network — there's room for improvement<b>.</b></p><p>When you drive around Beijing these days, you still need patience and luck to find an available&nbsp;EV charging point, and from time to time, a lot of those two things. There’s one charging pole for every three EVs, on average, in China — about 1.7 million in total, including home and public ones. But&nbsp;the number of EVs is expected to surge 29-fold to over 160 million vehicles by 2035, creating a huge charging gap, and a great opportunity. For charging-pole providers like startup&nbsp;Qingdao TGOOD Electric Co., which operates China's&nbsp;largest network of EV plugs, and&nbsp;StarCharge, which isn’t listed yet but which plans to be in the not too distant future, that latent demand could pave the&nbsp;way for faster and smoother expansion, as well as provide a quicker path to&nbsp;profitability.</p><p>In the same vein, as batteries from the early fleets of EVs that started appearing on China’s roads in 2008 near retirement,lithium-ion battery recycling—&nbsp;a theme highlighted for the first time this year in the work report&nbsp; — is emerging as&nbsp;an urgent task that must be addressed, not only for environmental reasons, but also for devising efficiencies in mining the minerals used to make batteries. Some 39,000 tons of cobalt and 125,000 tons of nickel could come from spent batteries by 2030, helping to offset any shortfall in mined supply, according to BNEF. For cobalt, that could meet around 10% of projected demand. BNEF also said today that used EVs&nbsp;in China are&nbsp;losing value faster&nbsp;than comparable internal combustion engine vehicles, highlighting the need for battery-recycling facilities.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/28e58dc2b5f29fbce89ca301f8a42e1c\" tg-width=\"930\" tg-height=\"576\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p>Companies are starting to respond. Chinese battery maker&nbsp;Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd., a Tesla supplier, last month announced a new 12-billion-yuan facility in Guangdong, a part of which will be dedicated to battery recycling. In a year when automakers globally took a hit due to the coronavirus, CATL’s Shenzhen-listed shares surged 230%.</p><p>Beijing’s vow to build more&nbsp;battery-swap stations&nbsp;is another avenue that investors who want exposure to China’s booming EV market may want to watch. This has played a big part in positioning China as the world’s biggest market for EVs, attracting serious money from, among others, Tesla, which set up afactory in Shanghai.This year, however, those words have been replaced by more current buzz words: EV changing stations, battery swapping facilities, and battery recycling. The change of focus is telling. Having spooled out incentives to foster mass EV adoption – the government has delivered more than 52 billion yuan ($8 billion) in subsidies, for example – China now is focused on ensuring the necessary infrastructure is in place to support the sector for the long term. This change will, in time, create pockets of opportunity in areas that may not immediately be apparent.Take EV charging. Insufficient charging facilities have been cited as one of the key obstacles hindering EV development in China. While the situation is more advanced than in the U.S. — as BNEF analyst and Hyperdrive writer Colin McKerracher recently pointed out, China installed 112,000 public EV charging points in December alone, more than the entire U.S. public charging network — there's room for improvement.When you drive around Beijing these days, you still need patience and luck to find an available EV charging point, and from time to time, a lot of those two things. There’s one charging pole for every three EVs, on average, in China — about 1.7 million in total, including home and public ones. But the number of EVs is expected to surge 29-fold to over 160 million vehicles by 2035, creating a huge charging gap, and a great opportunity. For charging-pole providers like startup Qingdao TGOOD Electric Co., which operates China's largest network of EV plugs, and StarCharge, which isn’t listed yet but which plans to be in the not too distant future, that latent demand could pave the way for faster and smoother expansion, as well as provide a quicker path to profitability.In the same vein, as batteries from the early fleets of EVs that started appearing on China’s roads in 2008 near retirement,lithium-ion battery recycling— a theme highlighted for the first time this year in the work report  — is emerging as an urgent task that must be addressed, not only for environmental reasons, but also for devising efficiencies in mining the minerals used to make batteries. Some 39,000 tons of cobalt and 125,000 tons of nickel could come from spent batteries by 2030, helping to offset any shortfall in mined supply, according to BNEF. The company flew 14% in May 2020 compared with the previous year. The company was created just over a decade ago with the genesis of bitcoin  and is now in the midst of a moment that many in the industry have described as a tipping point .</p><p>There are few ways to get direct ownership of crypto currencies, outside of buying them directly, a service that Coinbase provides for a fee, and what investors appear willing to be pay up for.</p><p>Leeor Shimron, analyst at FundStrat Global Advisors, described the Coinbase listing as seminal. \"Coinbase's direct listing is a watershed moment for the crypto industry.\"</p><p>Wedbush analyst Dan Ives said the listing is a reflection of the crypto's mainstream evolution.</p><p>\"Coinbase is a foundational piece of the crypto ecosystem and is a barometer for the growing mainstream adoption of Bitcoin and crypto for the coming years in our opinion,\" he wrote in a research note Tuesday.</p><p>Some caution that the implied valuations for Coinbase as a crypto exchange are too lofty , the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange.</p><p>In a direct listing, a company floats its shares on a stock exchange, but without hiring banks to underwrite the transaction, like in an IPO.</p><p>Here's what you need to know about the coming offering.</p><p><b>What is Coinbase?</b></p><p>The Silicon Valley crypto exchange was co-founded in 2012 by Brian Armstrong, 38, who runs the platform as chief executive. Fred Ehrsam, a Coinbase director, also helped to create the company.</p><p>According to Forbes , Armstrong's networth is currently $6.5 billion based on his ownership in the company and his wealth is likely to increase if the direct listing goes off successfully.</p><p><b>When will Coinbase go public?</b></p><p>Coinbase will list on April 14. The precise timing of the list isn't clear but <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/PLTR\">Palantir Technologies Inc.</a>'s (PLTR)direct listing   after 1:30 p.m. Eastern Time.</p><p><b>Where will it list?</b></p><p>Coinbase is set to go public on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol \"COIN\" as a direct listing, meaning it isn't raising any new money, as a company would under a traditional IPO.</p><p>Coinbase is the Nasdaq's first major direct listing, with Spotify <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/SPOT\">$(SPOT)$</a>, <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/WORK\">Slack Technologies</a> (WORK) and most recently Palantir Technologies (PLTR) all opting to directly list at the NYSE.</p><p><b>Valuations?</b></p><p>Valuations for Coinbase vary from $50 billion to $150 billion based on some decentralized crypto platforms that attempt to replicate how the company's shares might trade. At the top end of the spectrum, Coinbase would be bigger than a number of U.S. exchanges, including ICE, Nasdaq, CME Group <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CME\">$(CME)$</a> and Cboe Global Markets <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CBOE\">$(CBOE)$</a>.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d2200134a14a3d37a8a656d85f6906c0\" tg-width=\"955\" tg-height=\"657\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p>David Trainer, CEO of New Constructs, an investment research firm, said the crypto platform's value is ridiculously high. \"Even though Coinbase's revenue surged over the past 12 months, the company has little-to-no-chance of meeting the future profit expectations that are baked into its ridiculously high expected valuation of $100 billion,\" he said.</p><p>\"Coinbase's expected valuation of $100 billion implies that its revenue will be 1.5x the combined 2020 revenues of two of the most established exchanges in the marketplace, Nasdaq Inc. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/NDAQ\">$(NDAQ)$</a> and Intercontinental Exchange <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/ICE\">$(ICE)$</a>, the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange,\" he said.</p><p>Trainer said that based on his calculation, Coinbase's valuation should be closer to $18.9 billion--an 81% decrease from the $100 billion expected valuation.</p><p><b>'Not for the faint of heart'</b></p><p>MoffettNathanson analyst Lisa Ellis explained to MarketWatch why the offering is, as she describes it \"not for the faint of heart,\" but why she initiated coverage of the exchange at a buy with a price-target of $600, even before it sees its first trade on the Nasdaq.</p><p>\"I'm super super bullish on Coinbase...because you get the sense that they are a market leader in the space and crypto agnostic,\" she said.</p><p>That said, she acknowledges that currently 90% of Coinbase's revenues are derived directly from retail trading, with most in the U.S. and trading centered primarily on the two largest cryptos: bitcoin and Ether  on the ethereum blockchain.</p><p>\"So the implications is that Coinbase's revenues are correlated with the level of activity in cryto currency and especially bitcoin and ether.\"</p><p>Ellis says investors need to have at least a one-year long-term investment strategy in bitcoin, which could still go to zero by some bearish accounts, but a three-year outlook is even better, because the crypto complex has tended to operate in three-year cycles of boom and then bust.</p><p><b>Validation for crypto or a top?</b></p><p>Some bulls see Coinbase as validation for the nascent crpyto industry.</p><p>Alex Mashinsky, head of crypto-lending and trading platform Celsius Network, put it this way:</p><p>\"We look at the Coinbase listing as an additional validation of the space, and a major PR opportunity for the entire industry to shine as the future of finance,\" he told MarketWatch via email.</p><p>\"Coinbase has more users and more revenues than many of the largest Wall Street players and is more profitable than any major exchange, and this validation puts most skeptics at a crossroads having to re-evaluate their denial and frustration with the disruption coming at them from all sides.\"</p><p>Others suggest that it may prove a new top for the market and put crypto prices under pressure after a precipitous rally in recent days and a fresh record for bitcoin.</p><p>Yves Lamoureux, the president of Montreal-based macroeconomic research firm Lamoureux &amp; Co., told MarketWatch that he is fearful that too much euphoria surrounds bitcoin and crypto and sees it due for a retrenchment as a result. \"Can you find out-there anyone with a bearish viewpoint?\" he asked. \"A resounding no,\" said Lamoureux.</p><p><b>Is Coinbase the largest crypto exchange?</b></p><p>Coinbase is the second-largest crypto platform, but the largest in the U.S., by volume. The title of largest goes to Binance, which sees $47 billion in crypto trading volume in a 24-hour period, according to CoinMarketCap.com .</p><p><b>Who else owns Coinbase?</b></p><p>Venture-capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, is the largest owner of Coinbase, boasting about 25% of Class A shares  and 14%% of Class B. You won't see <b>Roku</b> (NASDAQ:ROKU) cranking out plush dolls, filling up cruise ships, or screening a promising blockbuster at a multiplex near you.</p>\n<p>Roku and <b>Walt Disney</b> (NYSE:DIS) may not seem to have a lot in common, but they are both riding high as investments these days on the strength of their streaming businesses. Roku is a streaming pioneer, and between its fast-growing platform and its popular line of streaming devices it has all of its eggs in the digital basket. Disney is a more diversified media empire that was late to the streaming revolution, but it has more than made up for lost time. Disney+ is now generating 7% of its revenue, but Hulu commands a thicker 14% slice. Throw in ESPN+ and roughly a quarter of Disney's business is now coming from its direct-to-consumer digital platforms.</p>\n<p>Roku and Disney realize that streaming is the future of video entertainment. Which <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> is the better buy for your portfolio? I own both, but I don't mind choosing <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> over the other by the time we're done here. Let's size up Roku and Disney to see their near-term prospects to beat the market.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6ad48da1d18356f7c59d32355b019939\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>This is no Mickey Mouse operation</h2>\n<p>Disney is a natural-born athlete when it comes to entertainment. It's at the top or gaining quickly on the market leader in nearly all of its business segments. It operates the world's most visited theme parks. In 2019 -- the last year that movie theaters were at full strength -- it put out all six of the country's highest-grossing films. Things are a little more contested on the media networks front, but when it comes to sports programming everyone else is a distant silver medalist to Disney's majority-owned ESPN.</p>\n<p>It's also a quick learner. It's been just 16 months since Disney+ was launched, and this month it announced that it has surpassed 100 million paying subscribers. The breakneck speed of the streaming platform's success is why Disney shares hit another all-time high last week, even when this fiscal athlete is not at the top of every game right now.</p>\n<p>Its theme parks are operating under a short leash in terms of allowed daily capacity, and that's with its original Disneyland in California still not open. It finally put out its first theatrical release in a year, but it's been holding back on most of its multiplex content until the movie theater industry claws its way out of the pandemic. Disney's four cruise ships have been out of service since March of last year. Today's shortcomings aren't deal breakers. Disney is still the top dog among&nbsp;media stocks, and all of its currently slumping segments should recover as we recover from the COVID-19 crisis. Disney is a tough stock to top when it comes to entertainment, but then we have Roku to consider.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c9117b8a76bcb5de90b5339d7fcf0fff\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>Meet the Roku row crew</h2>\n<p>If you're looking for a company that's succeeding financially right now, Disney may not fit the bill. It has posted three consecutive quarters of double-digit declines in revenue, and its profitability has taken an even bigger hit. Disney+ is generating plenty of buzz, but the House of Mouse doesn't expect the streaming platform to be cranking out profits until 2024.</p>\n<p>Roku doesn't offer the entertainment diversity of Disney, but it is killing it right now. The streaming pioneer fuels the TV streaming experience for 51.2 million accounts, 39% more than it was serving a year earlier. We're not just talking about folks choosing Roku devices to plug into their TVs to make them stream a growing number of third-party apps. A whopping 38% of all smart TVs sold now come with Roku built in as the operating system of choice.</p>\n<p>We're streaming a lot these days. The average Roku home spends 3.6 hours a day on the platform, and between the growth in users and the surge in ad revenue per user, Roku's platform revenue soared 81% in its latest quarter. The other end of the income statement is also starting to turn the corner with Roku posting back-to-back quarters of profitability.</p>\n<p>My own portfolio has made room for both Disney and Roku. They are two of my favorite media stocks. Disney is the blue chip here, and despite its recent struggles it will make sense as the choice for risk-averse investors. However, I do have a larger position in Roku than Disney. I like where it is at this early stage of the streaming revolution, and it continues to excel as an all-weather play in this booming niche. You won't see Roku (NASDAQ:ROKU) cranking out plush dolls, filling up cruise ships, or screening a promising blockbuster at a multiplex near you.\nRoku and Walt Disney (NYSE:DIS) may not seem to have a lot in common, but they are both riding high as investments these days on the strength of their streaming businesses. Roku is a streaming pioneer, and between its fast-growing platform and its popular line of streaming devices it has all of its eggs in the digital basket. Disney is a more diversified media empire that was late to the streaming revolution, but it has more than made up for lost time. Disney+ is now generating 7% of its revenue, but Hulu commands a thicker 14% slice. Throw in ESPN+ and roughly a quarter of Disney's business is now coming from its direct-to-consumer digital platforms.\nRoku and Disney realize that streaming is the future of video entertainment. Which one is the better buy for your portfolio? I own both, but I don't mind choosing one over the other by the time we're done here. Let's size up Roku and Disney to see their near-term prospects to beat the market.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nThis is no Mickey Mouse operation\nDisney is a natural-born athlete when it comes to entertainment. It's at the top or gaining quickly on the market leader in nearly all of its business segments. It operates the world's most visited theme parks. In 2019 -- the last year that movie theaters were at full strength -- it put out all six of the country's highest-grossing films. Things are a little more contested on the media networks front, but when it comes to sports programming everyone else is a distant silver medalist to Disney's majority-owned ESPN.\nIt's also a quick learner. It's been just 16 months since Disney+ was launched, and this month it announced that it has surpassed 100 million paying subscribers. The breakneck speed of the streaming platform's success is why Disney shares hit another all-time high last week, even when this fiscal athlete is not at the top of every game right now.\nIts theme parks are operating under a short leash in terms of allowed daily capacity, and that's with its original Disneyland in California still not open. It finally put out its first theatrical release in a year, but it's been holding back on most of its multiplex content until the movie theater industry claws its way out of the pandemic. Disney's four cruise ships have been out of service since March of last year. Today's shortcomings aren't deal breakers. Disney is still the top dog among media stocks, and all of its currently slumping segments should recover as we recover from the COVID-19 crisis. Disney is a tough stock to top when it comes to entertainment, but then we have Roku to consider.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nMeet the Roku row crew\nIf you're looking for a company that's succeeding financially right now, Disney may not fit the bill. It has posted three consecutive quarters of double-digit declines in revenue, and its profitability has taken an even bigger hit. Disney+ is generating plenty of buzz, but the House of Mouse doesn't expect the streaming platform to be cranking out profits until 2024.\nRoku doesn't offer the entertainment diversity of Disney, but it is killing it right now. The streaming pioneer fuels the TV streaming experience for 51.2 million accounts, 39% more than it was serving a year earlier. We're not just talking about folks choosing Roku devices to plug into their TVs to make them stream a growing number of third-party apps. A whopping 38% of all smart TVs sold now come with Roku built in as the operating system of choice.\nWe're streaming a lot these days. The average Roku home spends 3.6 hours a day on the platform, and between the growth in users and the surge in ad revenue per user, Roku's platform revenue soared 81% in its latest quarter. The other end of the income statement is also starting to turn the corner with Roku posting back-to-back quarters of profitability.\nMy own portfolio has made room for both Disney and Roku. They are two of my favorite media stocks. Disney is the blue chip here, and despite its recent struggles it will make sense as the choice for risk-averse investors. However, I do have a larger position in Roku than Disney. I like where it is at this early stage of the streaming revolution, and it continues to excel as an all-weather play in this booming niche.
