That's great for Netflix investors.","content":"

The cost of streaming is going up, and for once Netflix isn't to blame.

The competition is finally starting to focus on becoming profitable after several years of keeping pricing low to grow their subscriber bases. That means price hikes. Walt Disney and Apple have already announced price hikes, while Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery have clearly stated intentions to do so next year.

The competitors' price hikes come at a time when Netflix is making it more affordable than ever to subscribe to its streaming service. That could be great news for Netflix and its investors.

Your streaming bill is going up

It was only a matter of time before media companies started raising the prices of their direct-to-consumer offerings. The market for streaming content has become more competitive as there's been a land grab for new original series and films.

Disney saw its budget balloon last year. Warner Bros. Discovery is working to get a handle on HBO Max's budget. Apple's budget seemingly has no limits as it focuses on sports and prestige programming. And Paramount raised its long-term budget by 20% earlier this year. Meanwhile, Netflix has managed to keep its cash content costs steady, and plans to keep them at their current level for the time being.

Combined with inflation and other macroeconomic headwinds, there's a growing pressure to raise prices. Disney has already done so on its streaming services in the past, and it'll push the Disney+ price to $10.99 per month after it introduces its ad-supported tier next month. Apple raised the price of Apple TV+ by $2 to $6.99 per month in October.

And more price hikes are coming. The head of streaming at Warner Bros. Discovery, Jean-Briac Parrette, said raising pricing on HBO Max in 2023 is an opportunity for the company. He also sees growing revenue per user internationally. The plan to merge Discovery+ with HBO Max could be when the price hike comes.

Likewise, Paramount's CFO Naveen Chopra expressed confidence in the company's ability to raise prices for Paramount+ and Showtime ahead. He noted pricing is moving higher across the industry, which gives the company room to increase prices itself.

Higher competitor prices are great for Netflix

Netflix has consistently raised its pricing over the last eight years, but it's recently started bumping into some resistance from consumers.

The increased price sensitivity among consumers corresponds with the launch of all the newer streaming services that came to market over the last few years. Those services are all losing money, Netflix estimates, in an effort to grow their subscriber bases. Management was keen to point this out in its third-quarter letter to shareholders: "They are all losing money, with combined 2022 operating losses well over $10 billion, vs. Netflix's $5 to $6 billion annual operating profit."

As price hikes come to market, Netflix's pricing doesn't look nearly as expensive. In fact, Netflix's new Basic with Ads tier is priced below Disney+ and Hulu and could eventually become one of the least expensive options on the market if Netflix keeps the pricing steady. (Paramount+, Discovery+, and others are currently priced as low as $4.99 per month with ads.) Considering Netflix is in the early stages of selling advertisements, there's a lot of room to improve, and it could keep its pricing steady much longer than the competition.

Netflix's service is starting to look more and more like a value compared to other streaming services. And considering it's already very profitable and plans to keep its biggest expense -- content -- relatively stable, it has a lot of flexibility to keep its pricing stable. The price increases from its competitors could send more viewers back to Netflix, growing the subscriber base and bolstering revenue and free cash flow for investors.

","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Netflix's Competition Can't Stay Cheap Forever. The price increases from its competitors could send more viewers back to Netflix, growing the subscriber base and bolstering revenue and free cash flow for investors.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":190,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9963548251,"gmtCreate":1668730478373,"gmtModify":1676538102934,"author":{"id":"3574854195659586","authorId":"3574854195659586","name":"annlow","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b71bcf14190fd4f64709fca8099bed50","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3574854195659586","idStr":"3574854195659586"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Alright","listText":"Alright","text":"Alright","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9963548251","repostId":"2284716909","repostType":2,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":115,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9969552411,"gmtCreate":1668478820833,"gmtModify":1676538063136,"author":{"id":"3574854195659586","authorId":"3574854195659586","name":"annlow","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b71bcf14190fd4f64709fca8099bed50","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3574854195659586","idStr":"3574854195659586"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Oh","listText":"Oh","text":"Oh","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9969552411","repostId":"2283238077","repostType":2,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":195,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9091904556,"gmtCreate":1643759358025,"gmtModify":1676533851573,"author":{"id":"3574854195659586","authorId":"3574854195659586","name":"annlow","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b71bcf14190fd4f64709fca8099bed50","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3574854195659586","idStr":"3574854195659586"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Qualcomm(QCOM)$up up to 225 plsss","listText":"$Qualcomm(QCOM)$up up to 225 plsss","text":"$Qualcomm(QCOM)$up up to 225 plsss","images":[{"img":"https://static.itradeup.com/news/aea6b6d23cb47019aee842a0c9c40b61","width":"1080","height":"1920"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9091904556","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":163,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"hots":[{"id":9961401828,"gmtCreate":1669006138764,"gmtModify":1676538138585,"author":{"id":"3574854195659586","authorId":"3574854195659586","name":"annlow","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b71bcf14190fd4f64709fca8099bed50","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3574854195659586","authorIdStr":"3574854195659586"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Pray","listText":"Pray","text":"Pray","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9961401828","repostId":"1117170787","repostType":2,"repost":{"id":"1117170787","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1669002303,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1117170787?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-11-21 11:45","market":"us","language":"en","title":"The Fed Minutes May Deliver A Massive Blow To The Stock Market","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1117170787","media":"Seeking Alpha","summary":"SummaryThe November Fed Minutes will be released Wednesday afternoon. The bond and currency markets a","content":"

Summary

The November Fed Minutes will be released Wednesday afternoon.

The bond and currency markets are already preparing for very hawkish minutes.

Fed board members appear to think rates may head towards 5%.

It will be a holiday-shortened trading week, but it will not be short on news events. The massive news event will come on Wednesday at 2 PM with the release of the November Fed minutes. These minutes will likely reverse the equity market's celebration following a lower-than-expected October CPI report, as the Fed has a different view and is already pushing back hard.

Since the release of that CPI report on November 10, Fed-speak has been crystal clear - slower rate hikes do not mean a lower terminal rate, and one better-than-expected CPI report isn't going to change the path of monetary policy. Since the FOMC meeting, a strong case has been laid out by many FOMC members for the overnight rate to head over 5% and potentially to go as high as 5.25% in 2023.

If this message of higher rates is correctly delivered in the FOMC minutes, then it seems more likely than not that the equity market rally since the October CPI report in mid-November should not only pause but reverse.

VIX Positioning

Additionally, the VIX should rise sharply heading into the FOMC meeting on December 14. Currently, the VIX is trading towards the lower end of its trading range, around 23. The last time the VIX was this low heading into the release of the FOMC minutes came back on August 17, which also marked the end of the August rally and was followed by a sharp rise in the VIX and a very sharp decline in the S&P 500. The same thing also happened at the beginning of April, which also marked the end of the March rally, and early January, which marked the market peak.

TradingView

Rates And The Dollar

The bond market is already anticipating the more hawkish commentary out of the Fed minutes to be released this week. The Fed funds rates again call for the peak rate to be above 5% and back to levels seen immediately following the November FOMC meeting. Additionally, that peak rate is now seen coming in July instead of May, incorporating smaller rate hikes.

Bloomberg

The view of higher rates has also helped lift the 2-year yield, moving it back above 4.5%, and stopped the bleeding of the dollar index. These are critical signs that the bond and currency markets are listening to what the FOMC members are saying and taking the calls for higher rates very seriously. The Fed minutes should enforce the view of the Fed officials and should only help to push the dollar and rates even higher.

Higher rates and a strong dollar should help financial conditions tighten, pushing stock prices lower and increasing implied volatility levels.

TradingView

Fall Back Plan

Just in case the market doesn't respond appropriately to these minutes. The Fed is taking no chances heading into the FOMC meeting this time and will ensure that there will be no mix-ups from a potential article drop heading into the December meeting. There will be no repeat of the October version of the dovish pivot.

This time Jay Powell will take things into his own hands and talk for an hour at the Brookings Institute on November 30, starting at 1:30 PM ET. The talk is even more critical because it will come one day before the official FOMC blackout period starts heading into the December 14 FOMC meeting. It will be Powell's chance to make sure the market does not veer off course over those two weeks.

The Fed has been telling the market all year that it intended to raise rates aggressively and wanted financial conditions to tighten. Netflix's Dahmer, a biopic series about serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, was previously No. 1, but slipped to No. 3 behind Amazon Prime Video's Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power. The streaming giant can also add new subscribers among cash-strapped consumers while profiting incrementally via digital ad sales.

Now what

Netflix is certainly an interesting stock these days. The streaming sector has been in the doldrums as companies pull back on digital ad spending due to recessionary fears, and some cash-strapped consumers are dropping streaming services as their budgets get tighter amid rising interest rates. The abrupt loss of growth momentum is what caused Netflix's management to change its long-time ad-free strategy and roll out its lower-cost ad-supported tier.

Yet while the streaming sector is in for difficult times, Netflix could take advantage. Some of its media company peers have much higher debt burdens, and must play catch-up in the streaming game while also attempting to maintain their positions in a linear TV world that is in decline.

That's a tough set of goals to straddle in a soft economic environment, and it could allow the relatively stronger Netflix to push back against its competitors in the streaming space. However, how successful it will be will depend on whether or not Netflix can keep cranking out hits and maintain its place as the first choice for streaming among most consumers.
