technology stocks during the inflation tantrum last week, don’t worry, you will get another chance.</p><p>I offer eight stocks for your shopping list, below, from a tech fund manager with a great track record.</p><p>First, here’s why we’ll see more inflation tantrums, and why they’ll be a buying opportunity rather than the start of a bear market.</p><p>Inflation is going to pick up. We can expect more inflation because of all the stimulus, and because personal savings have surged to a post-war high of 14% of GDP. That’s a lot of pent-up demand to drive prices higher.</p><p>“People are ready to get out and spend money and be happy and live life,” says Kevin Landis, who manages the Firsthand Technology Opportunities fund TEFQX, -0.53%. “That unleashing of energy will be really powerful. We are all going to hold our breath and see if that means inflation, or not.”</p><p>It probably will, say two economists I follow. Inflation will rise to 2.2% by year-end, from current levels of 1.5%. predicts Jim Paulsen, an economist and market strategist with the Leuthold Group. Ed Yardeni of Yardeni Research predicts it will go up to 2.5%-2.8%. Both economists are referring to the core personal consumption expenditures deflator index.</p><p>•&nbsp;Bond yields will keep going up. The 10-year yield is taking a breather, following the sharp rise that spooked investors last week. But bond yields will increase as more signs of inflation emerge. The 10-year yield will reach 2% by the end of this year, predicts Paulsen. It was recently at 1.5%. Rising rates spark stock selloffs because higher yields make bonds more attractive. Higher rates also reduce stock valuations in models that use the 10-year bond yield to discount distant earnings back to the present.</p><p>•&nbsp;Sentiment remains rich. This makes the market more vulnerable to pullbacks. Complacent investors are easily “surprised” by unforeseen events. Corporate insiders are cautious, also a sign of a vulnerable market.</p><p>•&nbsp;Pullbacks are normal. Following the 74%-98% rise in the S&amp;P 500 SPX, +1.95% and Nasdaq COMP, +1.55% since last March, investors may have forgotten that stocks can go down, too. But pullbacks of 5%-10% are common. Now that so much of the growth is priced in to stocks, we will see more of them.</p><p>“We will probably have at least three or four more panic attacks over the next few months,” predicts Landis, at the Firsthand Technology Opportunities Fund.</p><p><b>Inflation? No worries</b></p><p>But like the one last week, the upcoming inflation tantrums will be buyable, because ultimately inflation is not really going to be a big problem for three reasons.</p><p>1. The Covid-19 crisis has pulled forward technology. That will create a burst of productivity growth, which calms inflation fears among investors and the Fed. Productivity growth reduces pressure at companies to pass along the higher costs of labor and materials.</p><p>2. In the background, the same factors that have been suppressing inflation for years are still in place — chiefly greater use of technology, global trade, and the aging of the population. Older people tend to spend less. And technology and trade lower the cost of goods.</p><p>3. History shows inflation during times of solid economic growth doesn’t hurt stocks, according to a study published by Paulsen on March 1. Inflation when growth is sluggish can end stock market rallies. But we will have robust growth this year, so that doomsday scenario is unlikely.</p><p><b>List of tech stocks</b></p><p>Tech stocks get hit harder during inflation tantrums because they are “long duration assets.” So much of their growth is in the distant future that when discount rates in valuation models go up, the perceived value of tech stocks falls hard.</p><p>For a short list of tech stocks to consider buying during the next inflation tantrums, it makes sense to look at the holdings of Landis’ Firsthand Technology Opportunities Fund because he has such a solid record. During the past three to five years, his fund has beaten competing technology funds by over 10 percentage points annualized, according to Morningstar. He beats the Morningstar U.S. Technology stock index by 9.7 percentage points or more annualized, over the same time frame.</p><p>His portfolio is an interesting source of ideas because it’s not the typical line up of Alphabet GOOGL, +3.10%, Amazon AMZN, +0.77% and Apple AAPL, +1.07%, though he does own Netflix NFLX, +1.00%. Instead, Landis likes to be ahead of the game by investing in earlier-stage tech companies that will grow because they are smaller — but still disrupters in some line of business.</p><p>Here’s a guide to some of his favorite stocks.</p><p><b>Roku, Chegg and Cree</b></p><p>Landis is not afraid to let portfolio positions get huge if he still likes the company. That is the case with Roku ROKU, -1.78%, Chegg CHGG, -1.17% and Cree CREE, +4.39%. They represented 21.5%, 8.3% and 6% of his portfolio at the end of last year. That’s a vote of confidence, because many mutual fund portfolio managers like to cap position size at 2%-5%, to limit single-stock risk.</p><p>“We still like these a lot,” says Landis.</p><p>He expects Roku to continue to grow because it is so far ahead of competing streaming services that are stumbling as they ramp up. “It’s kind of a mess out there,” says Landis. “Roku has done a lot of the hard work that other companies are only just getting started on.” Roku makes money by selling channel buttons on its platform, digital advertising and content-distribution services. It also sells devices.</p><p>Landis expects the online education company Chegg to continue growing now that people are more familiar with distance learning because of Covid-19.</p><p>“Companies that can facilitate distance learning are in a better position now because everyone knows what works and what does not work,” says Landis. He thinks the education sector is ripe for “disruption” and Chegg will be one of the main companies shaking things up.</p><p>Cree is a key producer of semiconductors used in electronic vehicles, which should support solid demand growth for years.</p><p><b>Zscaler</b></p><p>The Internet is the new corporate network and the cloud is the new data center. So the old concept of security software that guards the perimeter of a corporate network is fading fast. Zscaler ZS, -3.06% offers security systems for this new environment. There are plenty of years of growth ahead because most companies are still in the early stages of moving to the cloud. Covid-19 has accelerated this transition, given that so many people work from home.</p><p><b>Domo</b></p><p>Domo’s DOMO, +1.06% Business Cloud platform helps people manage and learn from the vast amounts of data inside and outside their companies. The service helps managers collect, analyze, store and share data.</p><p>Domo’s “Mr. Roboto” feature helps deploy machine-learning algorithms to analyze trends, make predictions and provide alerts.</p><p>“For any business, there are a handful of internal and external metrics that people want on their personal dashboard every day,” says Landis. “Domo provides great tools to do that.”</p><p><b>DocuSign</b></p><p>DocuSign DOCU, -3.00% speeds up the pace of business by digitizing forms used in contracts and agreements. Its forms replace “wet” signatures with e-signatures. It also offers software that automates the whole process, called the DocuSign Agreement Cloud.</p><p>To anyone who has used e-signatures on tax forms or work contracts, DocuSign may seem like a one-trick pony. But that’s not the case, says Landis. There’s plenty of room to expand in real estate, car dealerships and the venture-capital business, and highly regulated industries.</p><p><b>Bill.com</b></p><p>Bill.com’s BILL, +0.23% cloud-based accounting software simplifies back-office operations for small businesses. Aside from tracking numbers, the software helps companies connect with suppliers and clients. Customers include most of the top 100 accounting firms, and also big companies like Bank of America BAC, +1.18%, J.P. Morgan Chase JPM, +0.23% and American Express AXP, +3.26%.</p><p>But the sweet spot for growth is the startup that’s not locked in to legacy systems. “Accounting software systems are notorious for having market share just because they are incumbent,” says Landis. “But when people are setting up companies, they want to go with the best.”</p><p><b>Qell Acquisition</b></p><p>While acknowledging the potential pitfalls in special purpose acquisition companies (SPACs), which I identify here, Landis welcomes them as a streamlined alternative to the traditional initial public offerings. Like me, Landis favors SPACs with a promising sponsor lineup.</p><p>The sponsor slate at Qell QELLU, +2.43% suggests it will merge with an electric vehicle (EV) company. CEO and director Barry Engle worked at General Motors GM, +3.70% for years. And finance chief Sam Gabbita comes from OGCI Climate Investments, and a private investment fund specializing in sustainability investing called Element Partners. So the old concept of security software that guards the perimeter of a corporate network is fading fast. Zscaler ZS, -3.06% offers security systems for this new environment. There are plenty of years of growth ahead because most companies are still in the early stages of moving to the cloud. Covid-19 has accelerated this transition, given that so many people work from home.DomoDomo’s DOMO, +1.06% Business Cloud platform helps people manage and learn from the vast amounts of data inside and outside their companies. The service helps managers collect, analyze, store and share data.Domo’s “Mr. Roboto” feature helps deploy machine-learning algorithms to analyze trends, make predictions and provide alerts.“For any business, there are a handful of internal and external metrics that people want on their personal dashboard every day,” says Landis. “Domo provides great tools to do that.”DocuSignDocuSign DOCU, -3.00% speeds up the pace of business by digitizing forms used in contracts and agreements. Its forms replace “wet” signatures with e-signatures. It also offers software that automates the whole process, called the DocuSign Agreement Cloud.To anyone who has used e-signatures on tax forms or work contracts, DocuSign may seem like a one-trick pony. But that’s not the case, says Landis. There’s plenty of room to expand in real estate, car dealerships and the venture-capital business, and highly regulated industries.Bill.comBill.com’s BILL, +0.23% cloud-based accounting software simplifies back-office operations for small businesses. Aside from tracking numbers, the software helps companies connect with suppliers and clients. Customers include most of the top 100 accounting firms, and also big companies like Bank of America BAC, +1.18%, J.P. Morgan Chase JPM, +0.23% and American Express AXP, +3.26%.But the sweet spot for growth is the startup that’s not locked in to legacy systems. “Accounting software systems are notorious for having market share just because they are incumbent,” says Landis. “But when people are setting up companies, they want to go with the best.”Qell AcquisitionWhile acknowledging the potential pitfalls in special purpose acquisition companies (SPACs), which I identify here, Landis welcomes them as a streamlined alternative to the traditional initial public offerings. Like me, Landis favors SPACs with a promising sponsor lineup.The sponsor slate at Qell QELLU, +2.43% suggests it will merge with an electric vehicle (EV) company. CEO and director Barry Engle worked at General Motors GM, +3.70% for years. The S&amp;P 500 (DVS), Dow (INDU) and Nasdaq Composite (COMP) suffered double-digit declines, with the pan-European Stoxx 600 (SXXL) index logging its worst day on record.</p>\n<p>The collapse felt particularly shocking because markets had been shrugging off the coronavirus for weeks, even as alarm bells sounded in various corners of the global economy.</p>\n<p>But sentiment shifted abruptly when former President Donald Trump banned travel from most of Europe and the World Health Organization officially declared Covid-19 a pandemic on March 11.</p>\n<p>It's been a wild ride since. The crash was short lived and financial markets, fueled by government stimulus, powered through a devastating global downturn to end the year at record highs -- a stark reminder of the disconnect between Wall Street and Main Street.</p>\n<p>The latest: Many of the hallmarks of 2020 are still evident -- and not just in lockdowns, social distancing and working from home. The exuberance that's defined equity markets over the past 12 months has kept pushing stocks to all-time highs this year.</p>\n<p>The rise of retail traders, who revved last year's rally, continues unabated -- as captured by the extraordinary GameStop saga and the recent launch of an ETF focused on stocks generating social media buzz.</p>\n<p>The coronavirus is still with us, too, but investors are now banking on a swift and strong recovery as vaccine rollouts gather pace and the United States gears up for another enormous stimulus package.</p>\n<p>Goldman Sachs predicts 7% US GDP growth in 2021, a level not seen since 1984.</p>\n<p>Big risk: Like this time last year, equity investors may be underestimating the size of potential stumbling blocks. Ironically, a booming economy may not be good for stocks because it could increase funding costs for companies and rob equities of their main selling point: superior returns.</p>\n<p>Bond yields have moved higher on increased inflation expectations, although from rock-bottom levels. Still, the shift has caused stock markets to wobble in recent days over fears that central banks could lift interest rates to prevent soaring prices and might rein in asset purchases sooner than anticipated, taking excess cash out of markets.</p>\n<p>While a strong recovery is good for corporate earnings, higher rates make debt more expensive, which could become a problem for companies that have borrowed heavily through the crisis. Stocks also look relatively less attractive when bond yields rise.</p>\n<p>Keep calm: The Federal Reserve has made it clear that it's willing to tolerate higher inflation if it means businesses are recovering and unemployment is in decline.</p>\n<p>While predicting an increase in consumer prices this summer, Fed chair Jerome Powell said Thursday that inflation would need to be sustained at 2% and the economy reach close to maximum employment before the central bank would consider increasing interest rates.</p>\n<p>Given that the US labor market is still short about 10 million jobs since the pandemic hit, it may be some time yet before rates get picked up off the floor.</p>\n<p>\"The backdrop will remain supportive for equities in 2021,\" head of equities at London &amp; Capital, Roger Jones, told me. \"Longer term structural headwinds to inflation -- demographics, technology advancement and high levels of debt -- are stronger than ever. Additionally, equities can cope with inflation as long as it's not sustained above the 3% level,\" Jones said.</p>\n<p><b>The European Central Bank could have a new problem</b></p>\n<p>A sustained increase in consumer prices may seem a long way off in Europe, where economic activity remains severely constrained by lockdowns, stimulus is limited and the outlook for GDP growth this year has weakened.</p>\n<p>Despite all this, inflation has ticked up in the region and if bond yields keep rising policymakers could eventually be forced to take action.</p>\n<p>What's happening: The European Central Bank meets Thursday and investors will want to know how it's thinking about inflation. They'll also want some reassurance from ECB President Christine Lagarde that the central bank has no plans to tighten financing conditions.</p>\n<p>\"The ECB will primarily try to downplay the recent increase in bond yields, calling it small in magnitude, driven by technical factors and focusing on real yields,\" head of research at ING Carsten Brzeski wrote in a note Friday.</p>\n<p>Brzeski expects the ECB to stress that asset purchases could be increased if necessary and move to frontload stimulus in the coming weeks to keep funding conditions favorable.</p>\n<p>See here: In an interview last month with The Economist Lagarde said that the ECB has used roughly €800 billion ($955 billion) of its €1.8 trillion ($2.1 trillion) Pandemic Emergency Purchase Program.</p>\n<p>\"We still have a lot. If we need it all, we'll use it all,\" she added.</p>\n<p>Still, as recent volatility in bond markets indicates, a lot can change in a few weeks. Once economies reopen, a sudden rush for goods and services could lead businesses to hike prices. Excess savings in Europe will also juice the recovery if households spend some of that extra cash.</p>\n<p>\"Once restrictions get lifted and fear of the virus retreats, it is reasonable to expect that prices will increase,\" ING economists including Brzeski wrote in a note last week. \"Eurozone headline inflation could easily accelerate above the magic 2% level this year.\"</p>\n<p>Big picture: At least for now, Europe's economy looks a long way from overheating. GDP contracted again in the final three months of last year amid fresh lockdowns and, with many of those measures still in place, growth is unlikely to fare much better in the first quarter.</p>\n<p>A sluggish vaccine rollout and relatively modest stimulus will also weigh on Europe's recovery. But instead of focusing on companies that need a vaccine to really grow, let’s look at two tech stocks that have posted big sales growth during the pandemic and are ready to expand for years within futuristic industries…</p><p><b>NIO Inc.NIO</b></p><p>Every major automaker, from FordFto Volvo, is racing to roll out more electric vehicles as they try to catch TeslaTSLA. Luckily for investors, the EV market is far from a zero-sum game and newcomers continue to enter the space. Chinese EV maker NIO is a rising star in the booming market, as its sales continue to grow. The company is also focused on autonomous driving tech, as well as batteries, which are the lifeblood of the industry.</p><p>NIO sells multiple models that are somewhat in-line with Tesla, from smaller SUVs to sedans. The company said in early January that it delivered 17,353 vehicles in the fourth quarter, which marked a 110% jump.</p><p>Overall, NIO’s full-year deliveries surged 113% to nearly 44,000 vehicles in 2020. And its January 2021 figures were even more impressive, with deliveries up 350% from the year-ago period to push its overall cumulative deliveries to 83K.</p><p>With this in mind, Zacks estimates call for NIO’s FY20 revenue to jump 120% to $2.49 billion, with FY21 projected to come in another 97% higher to reach $4.89 billion. The Chinese EV company is also expected to significantly shrink its adjusted losses during this stretch.</p><p>NIO has topped our EPS estimates in the trailing two periods and its positive earnings revisions help it land a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy) heading into the release of its Q4 results on March 1.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5b6233d1784a5cb7db62b437f7632a3f\" tg-width=\"620\" tg-height=\"314\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p>NIO, which rocks an “A” grade for Growth in our Style Scores system, has seen its stock skyrocket over 1,000% in the last year and 300% in the past six months. Luckily for investors who missed the ride, NIO has cooled down, up only 12% in the last three months.</p><p>At roughly $55 per share, it’s down about 13% from its late January records. The recent downturn has seen it fall from overbought in terms of the Relative Strength Index to around 45—an RSI above 70 is often regarded as overbought, with any number below 30 considered oversold.</p><p>NIO’s recent price performance could give it room to run if it’s able to impress Wall Street. And the stock jumped over 1% through morning trading Friday, as it bounces off its 50-day moving average. NIO shares also trade at a discount compared to other high-flyers at 12.7X forward sales, which marks a discount against Tesla’s 15.5X and comes in 25% below its own six-months highs.</p><p>Three out of the nine brokerage recommendations that Zacks has for NIO come in at a “Strong Buy,” with none below a “Hold.” NIO might be worth buying as a long-term play that’s far less expensive than Tesla ($784 a share), in a world where EVs already accounted for over 30% of Volvo’s new car sales in Europe in 2020. And let’s remember that China is one of the world’s largest EV markets.</p><p><b>CrowdStrikeCRWD</b></p><p>CrowdStrike is a cloud-focused cybersecurity firm that utilizes machine learning and AI to protect endpoints and cloud workloads. This is crucial in the cloud age that’s full of rapidly expanding endpoints, which include laptops, desktops, smartphones, IoT devices, and more.</p><p>Remote work and schooling pushed this area of the ever-growing cybersecurity space to the forefront, but it was already booming. More importantly, as devices proliferate and our digitally-connected world grows more complex, it becomes more vulnerable.</p><p>CrowdStrike on February announced plans to bolster its offerings through the acquisition of Humio for $400 million—expected to close in the first quarter. Humio provides high-performance cloud log management and observability technology. The deal is set to “further expand its eXtended Detection and Response (XDR) capabilities by ingesting and correlating data from any log, application or feed to deliver actionable insights and real-time protection.”</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9f684cfbac7ba46e2cf8ab6e063461a2\" tg-width=\"620\" tg-height=\"280\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p>CrowdStrike, which went public in the summer of 2019, has soared nearly 280% in the past 12 months. More recently, the stock is up 65% in the last six months, and it already bounced back to new records—which it hit earlier in the week—after it slipped in mid-January.</p><p>The stock is firmly a growth play at the moment, trading at 42.7X forward sales, which puts it right in line with e-commerce giant ShopifySHOP. Despite its run, the stock is not currently considered overbought, with an RSI of 64.</p><p>CRWD’s positive earnings revisions help it grab a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy) at the moment, with it set to release its fourth quarter fiscal 2021 results on March 16. Meanwhile, 14 of the 19 brokerage ratings Zacks has for CRWD come in at a “Strong Buy,” with none lower than a “Hold.”</p><p>Looking back, the company crushed our Q3 estimates in December, with sales up 86%. CrowdStrike also lifted its guidance at the time. Zacks estimates currently call for it to swing from an adjusted loss of -$0.02 a share in the year-ago period to +$0.09 in the fourth quarter on 65% stronger sales.</p><p>In total, the cybersecurity firm is projected to soar from a loss of -$0.42 a share to +$0.23 in fiscal 2021. Plus, CRWD’s FY22 EPS figure is projected to climb another 70% higher, all the way to $0.39 a share. Meanwhile, its revenue is projected to jump 79% to hit $861 million in FY21 and then climb another 42% to $1.22 billion in FY22.</p><p>CrowdStrike’s expected growth would come on top of FY20’s 93% sales expansion. The stock has clearly already gone on an impressive run. But it is poised to continue to grow in a world where everything is connected and data is endless.
