In today’s economy in which the skills needed to succeed are rapidly evolving, education is becoming more important than ever. As automation and digital disruption are poised to replace unprecedented numbers of jobs worldwide, giving workers the opportunity to upskill and reskill will be crucial to raising global living standards and increasing social equity. Online education will play a critical role, enabling anyone, anywhere, to gain the valuable skills they need to earn a living in an increasingly digital economy.”</blockquote><p>The filing lists Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and Citigroup as underwriters. The number of shares and the price range of the proposed offering are yet to be determined.According to PitchBook data, Coursera’s most recent valuation in the private markets was $2.5 billion. To date, the company has raised $464 million in venture capital, most recently,$130 million in a Series F roundlast July. It has a flywheel approach to value creation, with significant price-to-cost advantages versus its competition. The company reported that about half of its new degree students in 2020 had been previously registered with Coursera and that its average student acquisition cost was less than $2,000. Its average student acquisition cost is lower than the industry standard. The Mountain View, California-based company offers individuals access to over 4,000 Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) from 200 educational institutions and corporations. The company also offers over two dozen degree programs at prices lower than what a learner would pay at a traditional, in-person institution. As the company grows its offering, it will be able to compete head-to-head with other “online program management” (OPM) providers, such as 2U(NASDAQ:TWOU), which is already publicly traded, and Noodle Partners.Ng’sshareholder letter in the S-1articulated clearly just what the company is about:“We believe that education is the source of human progress. In today’s economy in which the skills needed to succeed are rapidly evolving, education is becoming more important than ever. As automation and digital disruption are poised to replace unprecedented numbers of jobs worldwide, giving workers the opportunity to upskill and reskill will be crucial to raising global living standards and increasing social equity. Online education will play a critical role, enabling anyone, anywhere, to gain the valuable skills they need to earn a living in an increasingly digital economy.”The filing lists Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and Citigroup as underwriters. The number of shares and the price range of the proposed offering are yet to be determined.According to PitchBook data, Coursera’s most recent valuation in the private markets was $2.5 billion. To date, the company has raised $464 million in venture capital, most recently,$130 million in a Series F roundlast July. Coursera’s biggest institutional shareholders are New Enterprise Associates (18.3% of company stock), G Squared (15.9%) and Kleiner Perkins (9.2%).Operating ResultsThe company earned $293 million in revenues for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2020, up 59% from 2019. Priced at $149,990, it was to feature a range of 520 miles, thanks to its innovative 4680 battery cells, 1,100 horsepower and the ability to speed from 0 to 60 mph in less than two seconds.</p>\n<p>Instead, the company has begun delivering a new Model S Plaid that has only a 390-mile range and 1,020 horsepower, though it still sprints to from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just two seconds.</p>\n<p>As a way to “sugar coat” its flip flop, Tesla said the Model S Plaid is just as fast as the Model S Plaid Plus and $20,000 cheaper. Humm.</p>\n<p>This “bait and switch” has some Tesla fans worried, since they had deposits on the Model S Plaid Plus and wanted the innovative 4680 battery cells that Tesla had been touting as the key to longer range and more power. Essentially, the 4680 battery cells were the latest great Tesla development, since they were the first batteries to also be a structural component that supposedly allowed Tesla to lower the weight of its vehicles.</p>\n<p>Both the company’s Austin and Berlin manufacturing plants now under construction are supposed to also be making the 4680 batteries for new Tesla vehicles. If there is a problem with the engineering associated with utilizing the 4680 batteries or making them a structural component, then Tesla has grossly miscalculated, which is now worrying investors.</p>\n<p>Clearly something happened to delay the 4680 batteries that were supposed to provide Tesla with a competitive and engineering edge. For Tesla’s sake, I hope they figure out the problems associated with their much hyped 4680 battery cells, otherwise concerns about its two new manufacturing plants will emerge, as well as the stock losing more of its “mojo.”</p>\n<p>As someone who owns more than a few high-performance vehicles, I can tell you that the engineering geeks I know do<i>not</i>want to get a new Model S Plaid instead of a Model S Plaid Plus and will likely ask for their deposits back.</p>\n<p>What Tesla did is like Ferrari or Porsche telling its customers that one of their much-hyped new performance models is now not being sold because the base model was just as good! Car fanatics, like myself, like the latest and greatest engineering tidbits, so we would rather cancel our orders versus settle for a base model.</p>\n<p>The good news for Tesla is that its China sales in May resurged to 21,936, up sharply from 11,671 in April. The company’s sales tend to spike at the end of each quarter. For example, Tesla sold 35,478 vehicles in China in March, which was the strongest month ever in China.</p>\n<p>This is raising expectations for very strong China sales in June, especially now that the Model Y is being manufactured in Shanghai. Interestingly, since most Chinese Teslas are now made with iron phosphate batteries, these vehicles have lower range than its lithium cobalt vehicles, but its iron phosphate vehicles are cheaper and now increasingly being exported to Europe.</p>\n<p>However, I’m convinced another electric vehicle (EV) company will eventually displace Tesla as the biggest manufacturer of EVs in China.</p>\n<p><b>Taking Advantage of the EV Revolution’s Profit Potential</b></p>\n<p>I’m talking about&nbsp;<b>Nio, Inc.</b>(NYSE:<b>NIO</b>). The reality is that this company is on the verge of dominating the EV market in China and Hong Kong. It’s why I put NIO on my<b><i>Platinum Growth Club</i></b>Model Portfolio back in February.</p>\n<p>The company boasts that it is the “next-generation car company,” as it designs and manufactures electric vehicles that utilize the latest technologies in connectivity, autonomous driving and artificial intelligence (AI). NIO currently offers an electric seven-seater SUV (ES8) and a five-seater electric SUV (ES6) and recently introduced an attractive electric sedan (ET7). Its vehicles utilize NOMI, an in-vehicle artificial intelligence assistant.</p>\n<p>The company is also partnering with cutting-edge chip companies like<b>NVIDIA Corporation</b>(NASDAQ:<b>NVDA</b>), another one of my<b><i>Platinum Growth Club</i></b>Model Portfolio stocks. NIO plans to use the NVIDIA DRIVE Orin system-on-a-chip for its electric vehicles that will provide autonomous driving capabilities. The NVIDIA DRIVE Orin-powered supercomputer, which is being called Adam, will be launched in the ET7 sedan in China in 2022. Announcements like this are very positive, so NIO has been stealing some of Tesla’s thunder lately.</p>\n<p>Now, it’s important to note that NIO was bailed out by the Chinese government. Last year, the Chinese government injected $1 billion and now has a 24% ownership in the company. The reality is that China wants to dominate at least five major industries by 2025, and NIO is now its ticket to dominate EV manufacturing.</p>\n<p>With the backing of the Chinese government, some Wall Street firms are eager to help NIO by issuing new debt or equity. So, I wouldn’t be surprised if NIO surpasses Tesla, which is currently number-two in China, for market share in the upcoming years.</p>\n<p>That means, if you missed Tesla’s parabolic run like I did, NIO is essentially giving us a “second chance” to make money in a potentially explosive electric vehicle company.</p>\n<p>Shares of NIO climbed nearly 13% since the company’s June 4 announcement of its May delivery report and positive analyst comments, while Tesla shares rose almost 3%. First, NIO revealed that the global chip shortage is starting to take a toll on its business. NIO only delivered 6,711 vehicles in May, or a 5.5% decline from April’s deliveries. Company management noted that deliveries were “adversely impacted for several days due to the volatility of semiconductor supply and certain logistical adjustments.”</p>\n<p>Interestingly, despite the month-to-month dip, NIO’s deliveries were still up 95.3% year-over-year. Its first-quarter results showed the company’s business continues to be buoyed by the pandemic, with sales soaring 44% year-over-year to $108.5 billion.</p>\n<p>Amazon’s guidance for the second quarter implies that it expects the momentum to continue, which should help allay investor fears that business could slow in a post-pandemic environment. The company expects to post revenue between $110 billion and $116 billion, surpassing Wall Street’s projection $108.6 billion.</p>\n<p>Crucially, Amazon confirmed in its guidance that this year’s Prime Day will take place in June, which will likely help year-over-year comparisons for revenue in the second quarter. Typically, Amazon’s annual, two-day discount bonanza takes place in July, but the company postponed the event to October last year amid pandemic-related uncertainty.</p>\n<p>When asked about the Prime Day timing, CFO Brian Olsavsky said on a call with investors: “In many areas, July is vacation month, so it might be better for customers, sellers and vendors to experiment with a different time period. We believe that it might be better timing later in [the second quarter], so that’s what we’re testing this year.”</p>\n<p>Outside of its core retail segment, Amazon’s cloud-computing and advertising businesses continue to boom. Amazon Web Servicessawnet sales of $13.5 billion during the quarter, up 32% year over year. Amazon doesn’t disclose advertising sales, but it’s included in the company’s “Other” category, which saw its revenues grow 77% year over year to $6.9 billion.</p>\n<p>Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos also gave a rare glimpse into how the company’s streaming business has fared during the pandemic, as stuck-at-home consumers relied on online entertainment to keep busy. “As Prime Video turns 10, over 175 million Prime members have streamed shows and movies in the past year, and streaming hours are up more than 70% year over year,” he said.</p>\n<p>Amazon’s streaming service, Prime Video, is a key offering of the company’s Prime subscription service, which costs $119 a year and includes a range of other benefits like free, two-day shipping. Bezos disclosed earlier this month that the company now has 200 million Prime subscribers, 50 million more than it had at the start of 2020.</p>\n<p>Physical stores revenue, which includes Whole Foods Market and other brick-and-mortar offerings like Amazon Books, continued to fall. Sales slumped 16% to $3.9 billion. The category excludes online delivery, Olsavsky said.</p>\n<p>During the quarter, Amazon’s sales grew faster internationally than they did in North America. International revenue surged 60% year over year, more than any other segment, while North America revenue climbed 40%.</p>\n<p>As expected, Amazon will incur fewer costs this year related to coronavirus safety measures. Operating income is forecast to be between $4.5 billion and $8 billion in the second quarter, assuming $1.5 billion of costs related to Covid-19. That’s in line with what Amazon executives predicted last quarter.</p>\n<p>AmazonsaidWednesday it would spend more than $1 billion on raising wages for over half a million of its U.S. operations workers. On a call with reporters, Olsavsky said it decided to move up the pay increase from the fall to this spring as volumes remain just as strong as they were at the beginning of the pandemic.</p>\n<p>Olsavsky declined to comment on Amazon’s CEO transition plans, which will come into play once Bezossteps down in the third quarter. As it turns out, we were correct.</p>\n<p>Because on Monday, Mathew McDermott, head of digital assets at Goldman, told Bloomberg News that the bank is planning to sell options and futures for ether and bitcoinvia its newly restarted crypto trading desk.</p>\n<p>Even JP Morgan, whose CEO once famously bashed bitcoin,is expanding its own crypto business,claiming its clients demand it. The global banking regulators at the Basel Committee also gave a begrudging green light for international banks to deal in cryptocurrencies (though they need to hold plenty of capital in reserve for any crypto on their balance sheet).</p>\n<p>According to McDermott, even after the drop in crypto prices, hedge funds are still eager to trade crypto. And Goldman is looking to invest in more crypto-focused companies.</p>\n<blockquote>\n \"We’ve actually seen a lot of interest from clients who are eager to trade as they find these levels as a slightly more palatable entry point,” McDermott said in a phone interview on Thursday. “We see it as a cleansing exercise to reduce some of the leverage and the excess in the system, especially from a retail perspective.” Goldman tapped McDermott, 47, to head its digital currency efforts last year. Under his watch, the business has grown to 17 people from four. The bank has also invested in crypto start-ups. It put $5 million into a fundraising round by Blockdaemon, a firm that creates and hosts the computer nodes that make up blockchain networks. In May, Goldman led the $15 million investment into Coin Metrics, a cryptocurrency and blockchain data provider to institutional clients, and McDermott joined the company’s board. “We are looking at a number of different companies that fit into our strategic direction,” he said. Standard Chartered Plc is setting up a joint venture to buy and sell virtual currencies, though HSBC Holdings Plc is avoiding Bitcoin for now.\n</blockquote>\n<p>Circling back to the report we mentioned above, Goldman and its team of analysts have clearly explored the pros and cons before deciding to expand its business.</p>\n<p>The term “cryptocurrencies”—which most people take to mean that crypto assets act as a digital medium of exchange, like fiat currency—is fundamentally misleading when it comes to assessing the value of these assets. Indeed,<b>the blockchain that underlies bitcoin was not designed to replace a fiat currency—it is a trusted peer-to-peer payments network.</b>As a cryptographic algorithm generates the proof that the payment was correctly executed, no third party is needed to verify the transaction.<b>The blockchain and its native coin were therefore designed to replace the banking system and others like insurance that require a trusted intermediary today, not the Dollar.</b>In that sense, the blockchain is differentiated from other “digital” transactional mechanisms such as PayPal, which is dependent upon the banking system to prevent fraud like double-spending.</p>\n<p>In order to be trustworthy, the system needed to create an asset that had no liabilities or contingent claims, which can only be a real asset just like a commodity. And to achieve that, blockchain technologies used scarcity in natural resources—oil, gas, coal, uranium and hydro—through ever-increasing computational-power consumption to “mine” a bit version of a natural resource.</p>\n<p>From this perspective, the intrinsic value of the network is the trustworthy information that the blockchain produces through its mining process, and the coins native to the network are required to unlock this trusted information, and make it tradeable and fungible. It’s therefore impossible to say that the network has value and a role in society without saying that the coin does too. And the value of the coin is dependent upon the value and growth of the network.</p>\n<p>That said, because the network is decentralized and anonymous,<b>legal challenges facing future growth for crypto assets loom large.</b>Coins trying to displace the Dollar run headlong into anti-money laundering laws (AML), as exemplified by the recent ransoms demanded in bitcoin from the Colonial Pipeline operator and the Irish Health service. Regulators can impede the use of crypto assets as a substitute for the Dollar or other currencies simply by making them non-convertible. An asset only has value if it can either be used or sold. And Chinese and Indian authorities have already challenged crypto uses in payments.</p>\n<p>As a result,<b>the market share of coins used for other purposes beyond currencies like “smart contracts” and “information tokens” will likely continue to rise.</b>However, even these non-currency uses will need to be recognized by courts of law to be accepted in commercial transactions—a question we leave to the lawyers.</p>\n<p><b>The network creates the value, unlike other commodities</b></p>\n<p>Unlike other commodities, coins derive their entire value from the network. A bitcoin has no value outside of its network as it is native to the Bitcoin blockchain. The value of oil is also largely derived from the transportation network that it fuels, but at least oil can be burned to create heat outside of this network.<b>At the other extreme, gold doesn’t require a network at all.</b></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/aba6f2b8dd670875cb7a0942c5fd95f0\" tg-width=\"500\" tg-height=\"399\">Derived demand leaves the holder of the commodity exposed to the risk of the network becoming obsolete—a lesson that holders of oil reserves are now learning with decarbonization accelerating the decline of the transportation network, and, in turn damaging oil demand. Likewise,<b>bitcoin owners face accelerated network decay risk from a competing network, backed by a new cryptocurrency.</b></p>\n<p>As the demand for gold is not dependent on a network,<b>it will ultimately outlive oil and bitcoin—gold entropy lies at the unit, not the network, level.</b>Indeed, most stores of value that are used as defensive assets—like gold, diamonds and collectibles—don’t have derived demand and therefore only face unit-level entropy risk. This is what makes them defensive. The world can fall apart around them and they preserve their value. And while they don’t have derived demand, they do have other uses that establish their value, i.e. gold is used for jewelry and as a store of value.</p>\n<p><b>Transactions drive value, creating a risk-on asset</b></p>\n<p>Crypto doesn’t trade like gold and nor should it. Using any standard valuation method, transactions or expected transactions on the network are the key determinant of network value. The more transactions the blockchain can verify, the greater the network value. The global banking regulators at the Basel Committee also gave a begrudging green light for international banks to deal in cryptocurrencies (though they need to hold plenty of capital in reserve for any crypto on their balance sheet).\nAccording to McDermott, even after the drop in crypto prices, hedge funds are still eager to trade crypto. And Goldman is looking to invest in more crypto-focused companies.\n\n \"We’ve actually seen a lot of interest from clients who are eager to trade as they find these levels as a slightly more palatable entry point,” McDermott said in a phone interview on Thursday. “We see it as a cleansing exercise to reduce some of the leverage and the excess in the system, especially from a retail perspective.” Goldman tapped McDermott, 47, to head its digital currency efforts last year.
