Economic comeback plays led the market losses.\nFor the week, the 30-stock Dow lost 3.5%. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq were down by 1.9% and 0.2%, respectively, week to date.\nSt. Louis Federal Reserve President Jim Bullardtold CNBC's \"Squawk Box\"on Friday it was natural for the Fed to tilt a little \"hawkish\" this week and that the first rate increase from the central bank would likely come in 2022. His comments came after the Fed on Wednesday added two rate hikes to its 2023 forecast and increased its inflation projection for the year, putting pressure on stock prices.\n\"The fear held by some investors is that if the Fed tightens policy sooner than expected to help cool inflationary pressures, this could weigh on future economic growth,\" Truist Advisory Services chief market strategist Keith Lerner said in a note. To be sure, he added it would be premature to give up on the so-called value trade right now.\nPockets of the market most sensitive to the economic rebound led the sell-off this week. The S&P 500 energy sector and industrials dropped 5.2% and 3.8%, respectively, for the week. Financials and materials meanwhile, lost more than 6% each. These groups had been market leaders this year on the back of the economic reopening.\nThe decline in stocks came as the Fed's actions caused a drastic flattening of the so-called Treasury yield curve. Historically, three months after that spread moved this wide, the VIX fell 11 points and the market rallied an average 12% with a move higher 87% of the time, they said.</p>\n<p>“Given the VIX is at a near-record premium to actual equity volatility, we think selling the ‘VIX bubble’ represents a good market opportunity,” the strategists wrote.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/090b90671c410c2de55d41f9901794b4\" tg-width=\"1200\" tg-height=\"675\"></p>\n<p>The VIX jumped a year ago as the Covid-19 pandemic began to spread and affect the global economy, sending markets into a tailspin. The gauge, which has a lifetime average around 19.5, has largely remained above 20 even as stocks hit record highs on encouraging pandemic news. It has also stayed high relative to measures of swings in&nbsp;other asset classes&nbsp;like credit and rates.</p>\n<p>There is one potential caveat for equity volatility investors. Michael Purves, the CEO of Tallbacken CapitalAdvisorsLLC, said there are fewer participants willing to bet on declining swings after the culling of the short-volatility industry via VIX spikes in 2018 and March 2020. That’s probably keeping the gauge from falling to its lows from years like 2016 and 2017, he said, pointing to a dearth of put-option volume as evidence.</p>\n<p>“There’s a lack of volatility sellers to take this thing lower,” Purves said in an interview. “If there was a lot of fear, you’d see put volumes being higher.”</p>\n<p>Still, there are trades that can take advantage of the current levels in the VIX complex, according to Peter Cecchini, founder of AlphaOmegaAdvisorsLLC. It would probably lift the stock by broadening the base of potential investors to those who want or need dividends.</p><p>Berkshire has stepped up its share repurchases, buying back $15.7 billion of stock in the first three quarters of 2020, or about 3% of the shares outstanding. But with $146 billion in cash and projected earnings this year of $25 billion, it has the ability to pay a dividend as well as to buy back stock.</p><p>“Berkshire should pay a dividend; this would increase the appeal of the shares to investors who want current income,” says David King, co-manager of the Columbia Flexible Capital Income fund. “Given Berkshire’s size and financial strength, the company is unique in paying no dividend and that should be changed.”</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/014471f5dbd6554ccdd4f23756e41a51\" tg-width=\"963\" tg-height=\"627\"></p><p>Berkshire hasn’t paid a dividend for over 50 years. Why? Buffett’s view has been that a dollar in his hands is better than one in the hands of shareholders. That was long the case as Buffett worked his investment and acquisition magic, but it has been less true in recent years. Buffett declined to comment for this article.</p><p>In his 2012 annual letter, the CEO addressed the dividend issue, arguing that the better, and more tax-efficient, approach would be for investors who want income to sell a small portion of their Berkshire stock each year.</p><p>“First, dividends impose a specific cash-out policy upon all shareholders. If, say, 40% of earnings is the policy, those who wish 30% or 50% will be thwarted,” Buffett wrote. “Our 600,000 shareholders cover the waterfront in their desires for cash. The company also failed to capitalize on the market turmoil and make any big acquisitions.</p><p>So what else might Berkshire shareholders hope to see in the annual letter? More disclosure would help. (bit.ly/3pucdNd)</p><p>Last month’s Reddit rally drove massive volatility in GameStop and other shares, prompting the post-trade clearing houses that guarantee trades to call for billions of dollars in collateral from Robinhood and other retail trading platforms.</p><p>In response, many suspended buying in the affected stocks on Jan. 28. This outraged lawmakers, who questioned if the trading platforms were siding with hedge funds that had bet against the shares over Mom and Pop investors.</p><p>Vladimir Tenev, CEO of online brokerage Robinhood, wrote in his testimony that the decision to halt buying was solely due to the need to meet regulatory capital requirements.</p><p>Gabriel Plotkin said he was “humbled” when his hedge fund Melvin Capital Management suffered significant losses on the short end of the trade, but insisted his firm did not push Robinhood to suspend trading.</p><p>Likewise, Ken Griffin, CEO of hedge fund Citadel LLC and majority owner of Citadel Securities, a market maker that handles most of Robinhood’s customer orders, disputed speculation that his firm tried to influence Robinhood’s decision.</p><p>“I want to be perfectly clear: We had no role in Robinhood’s decision to limit trading in GameStop or any other of the ‘meme’ stocks. I first learned of Robinhood’s trading restrictions only after they were publicly announced,” he wrote.</p><p>Keith Gill, who touted his GameStop investment for months on his Roaring Kitty YouTube channel and Reddit, insisted his position was solely based on publicly known fundamentals of the business and it was “preposterous” to suggest he sought to entice unwitting investors to buy shares.</p><p>Reddit CEO Steve Huffman said the company had analyzed traffic on the Reddit sub-feed WallStreetBets where users congregate to discuss stocks. Its numbers aren’t merely some derivative of the stock market’s expected earnings. Instead, they reflect America’s economic reawakening after the Covid-19 pandemic.</p><p>Shawn Quigg, a J.P. Morgan derivatives strategist, recently told clients that there is little to stand in the way of the market’s achievement of “such gains sooner than later, particularly considering the numerous catalysts ahead, their impact on volatility, and the implications that will have on investor positioning.”</p><p>As President Joe Biden’s administration&nbsp;champions a $1.9 trillion stimulus program, and Covid-19 infections and hospitalizations decline, Quigg anticipates stocks surging. His view is somewhat at odds with recent trading. Stocks have declined as the 10-year Treasury note yield has increased to about 1.38%, a move&nbsp;that is fanning inflation fearsand worries about stock slumps.</p><p>Quigg likes taking advantage of the fear and the pending stimulus program, which Biden has begun to defend against concerns that it is too large. When the ETF was at $392.39, the leveraged risk-reversal strategy—that is,selling one put and buying many more calls&nbsp;with a higher strike price but the same expiration—could be done for no cost. In other words, the money received for selling the put was enough to buy 15 bullish calls.</p><p>The trade expresses high conviction that the ETF—which was recently trading around $387—will reach $450 by May 21, when May options expire. At $460, the call is worth $10.</p><p>Should the ETF decline, say, because current fears push the market below the $353 strike price, investors would be obligated to buy it at the lower price, or to cover or adjust the puts.</p><p>Quigg’s trade idea has a lot to admire.</p><p>For one, the trade carried zero cost when it was recommended late last week. Yes, prices have moved since the Feb. 18 note was published, but investors can recast strike prices to create similar pricing. When confronted with these metrics, they dismiss them and instead resort to accusations of short interest. And maybe some of the dissenters are short-sellers, but I have never been long or short AMC stock.</p>\n<p>Here's the unfortunate truth: Fundamentals always matter. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but eventually the stock price will reflect that. And if AMC's financial picture doesn't improve, the stock price will eventually plunge. And management knows that.</p>\n<p>In fact, in a recently filed Form 8-K, management issued this warning to shareholders: \"Under the circumstances, we caution you against investing in our [stock], unless you are prepared to incur the risk of losing all or a substantial portion of your investment.\"</p>\n<h3>2. AMC stock is wildly overvalued</h3>\n<p>The pandemic hit AMC hard last year, forcing the company to shutter theaters around the world. Not surprisingly, that sparked sharp declines in attendance, sales, and profitability. If AMC was competing in a high-growth industry, its present valuation might not be alarming. But it competes in a slow-growing sector of the entertainment industry. At its current price, this is a dangerous investment.</p>\n<h3>3. AMC has a liquidity problem</h3>\n<p>Before the pandemic, AMC had $265 million in cash and $4.7 billion in debt on its balance sheet. It also had $4.9 billion in operating lease liabilities (i.e., rent).</p>\n<p>When the pandemic hit, the company deferred a portion of its rent, but still couldn't cover operating expenses and interest payments. So AMC issued more debt and new shares several times during 2020, effectively digging the hole deeper.</p>\n<p>As of March 31, 2021, AMC's balance sheet was insolvent&nbsp;-- even if the company sold every last asset, it still wouldn't have enough cash to cover its liabilities.</p>\n<p>Now, in order to meet its minimum liquidity requirements, attendance must reach 85% of pre-COVID levels by the fourth quarter of this year. If that doesn't happen, management said it would likely seek a \"restructuring of [its] liabilities.\" That's a fancy phrase that means shareholders would be completely wiped out.</p>\n<p>So let's ignore the red flags raised by AMC's valuation. Investors still need to ask this question: Can attendance reach 85% of pre-pandemic levels in that time frame? If you aren't certain the answer is yes, then it's time to sell this stock. It has also stayed high relative to measures of swings in&nbsp;other asset classes&nbsp;like credit and rates.</p>\n<p>There is one potential caveat for equity volatility investors. Michael Purves, the CEO of Tallbacken CapitalAdvisorsLLC, said there are fewer participants willing to bet on declining swings after the culling of the short-volatility industry via VIX spikes in 2018 and March 2020. That’s probably keeping the gauge from falling to its lows from years like 2016 and 2017, he said, pointing to a dearth of put-option volume as evidence.</p>\n<p>“There’s a lack of volatility sellers to take this thing lower,” Purves said in an interview. “If there was a lot of fear, you’d see put volumes being higher.”</p>\n<p>Still, there are trades that can take advantage of the current levels in the VIX complex, according to Peter Cecchini, founder of AlphaOmegaAdvisorsLLC.
