giant&nbsp;<b>Jumia</b>&nbsp;(NYSE:<b><u>JMIA</u></b>) has a wild ride at the stock market in the past few months. JMIA stock shot up by more than 1500% from its pandemic lows earlier this year. However, in the past three months, it lost roughly 60% of its value.</p>\n<p>The reason is simple: its financials do not justify its lofty market capitalization of over $2.5 billion. Though that is true for now, the market is ignoring the business’ positioning and its incredible long-term potential.</p>\n<p>Jumia is a company in transition. It has shifted its business model towards third-party marketplace sales, which has heavily impacted its near-term growth. Moreover, it aims to be less reliant on one-off sales such as in electronics towards higher-frequency product categories such as clothing, food, and others.</p>\n<p>Additionally, higher-order frequency items will positively impact the penetration of its fintech offering called JumiaPay. It has also implemented several cost control measures and exited less profitable markets&nbsp;such as Cameroon.</p>\n<p>This being said, let’s look at Jumia in a little more depth and assess whether it’s a good investment now at this time.</p>\n<p><b>A Look at JMIA’s Financials</b></p>\n<p>It’s safe to that Jumia’s fundamentals aren’t impressive for its massive total addressable market and its meteoric valuation.</p>\n<p>Revenues in the past year&nbsp;declined by 12.9%&nbsp;though marketplace&nbsp;revenues grew by 19.6%. Moreover, its gross merchandise volume (GMV) was down&nbsp;by a considerable 19%&nbsp;for the full year. The trend has followed in its first-quarter results this year, where its&nbsp;GMV was down 13%&nbsp;and its sales dropped 6% on a year-over-year basis.</p>\n<p>The drop in revenues is linked to its transition in its business model, which I discussed earlier. However, an area where it is excelling is its gross margins.</p>\n<p>Gross margins rose by 22.3%&nbsp;last year compared to 2019, reaching positive territory after fulfillment expenses. Moreover, the trend followed in the first quarter this year, where&nbsp;gross profits reached €6.2 million, more than doubling year-over-year.</p>\n<p>The number of active users on its platform continues to rise at a healthy rate,experiencing a 12% growth&nbsp;in the past year compared to 2019.</p>\n<p>Additionally, the order volume on its platform increased by 5.1% in 2020 compared to 2019. The iCar has resulted in a lot of Wall Street&nbsp;research reports, but few hard numbers about what an&nbsp;Apple(AAPL) entry might mean for the global car business. What’s more, tech and car analysts have slightly different takes on what the Apple car means.</p>\n<p>News of a potential Apple car surfaced in December. Those reports were taken seriously by both tech and car analysts because Apple has had car ambitions stretching back years—and because Apple is huge. The tech giant has a market capitalization roughly equal to the market cap of all car makers on the globe, combined. That includes the most valuable car company on the planet:Tesla(TSLA).</p>\n<p>Hyundai Motor(005380.Korea),Kia Motors(000270.Korea), as well as&nbsp;U.S. EVstart-up&nbsp;Canoo(GOEV), have all been&nbsp;tied&nbsp;to Apple in reports. Nissan is the latest car company to be linked. Nissan stock fell almost 3% Monday after Reuters reported Nissan’s denial it was working with Apple.</p>\n<p>Apple, and the car companies, haven’t commented on Apple’s car plans. Apple wasn’t immediately available to comment on Nissan reports on Tuesday.</p>\n<p>Outside of&nbsp;temporary impacts&nbsp;on car companies directly linked to Apple, car stocks aren’t really reacting to iCar news. Crying wolf is one reason: Nothing concrete has come from repeated speculation. And of course, an Apple car would be years away—another reason auto investors aren’t too concerned for the moment.</p>\n<p>That doesn’t mean an Apple car won’t matter, or that news of potential partnerships can be discounted. Wedbush analyst&nbsp;Dan Ives&nbsp;expects a formal announcement in 2021. “At this point it’s a matter of when, not if,&nbsp;Apple&nbsp;will enter the EV race over the next few years,” wrote Ives in a Monday research report. He assigns an 85% probability that Apple will make an announcement in three to six months and calls Hyundai and&nbsp;Volkswagen(VOW.Germany) his top two choices for an Apple partnership.</p>\n<p>Hyundai has its own&nbsp;modular EV platform. That’s one reason Ives likes Hyundai as a possibility, although other auto makers, including&nbsp;General Motors(GM), have&nbsp;similar approaches&nbsp;to electric-vehicle development. Volkswagen, for its part, has big EV ambitions. It is also a&nbsp;large shareholder&nbsp;of&nbsp;QuantumScape(QS), which is&nbsp;pioneering&nbsp;solid-state, lithium anode EV batteries. Those batteries promise lower cost, better safety, faster charging, and more range. Both things could make Volkswagen attractive to a partner.</p>\n<p>Ives covers mainly technology stocks. He covers Apple, rating shares outperform and has a $175 price target for shares. He also covers Telsa stock, rating shares Hold with a $950 price target for shares. Bernstein analyst&nbsp;Toni Sacconaghi, covers both as well. He rates Apple stock Hold and has a $132 price target for shares. He is more bearish on Tesla though. He believes an Apple car would make it harder for Tesla to meet its volume growth goal of 50% a year on average for the next few years. “The automotive market has historically been highly fragmented, with strong regional brands and preferences,” wrote Sacconaghi in a recent research report. “It is uncertain to us that amid massive new competition and entry, the market will ultimately become more consolidated and/or have one outsized winner.”</p>\n<p>That’s bad news for Tesla in his mind. He rates Tesla shares Sell and has a $180 price target for the stock, well below where shares are trading.</p>\n<p>Morgan Stanley analyst&nbsp;Adam Jonas&nbsp;covers cars and not Apple. But he is bullish on Tesla stock, rating shares Buy with an $880 price target. An Apple car entry could speed EV penetration, which would benefit all EV makers. In addition, Tesla “can iterate industry-leading battery technology for another four or five years before Apple may be on the scene,” wrote Jonas in a recent research report. “But at some point, today’s EV players must share the sandbox.”</p>\n<p>More EV players, however, aren’t enough to shake his confidence in Tesla stock. In addition to Tesla, Jonas recommends stock in GM and supplier&nbsp;Aptiv(APTV) to get exposure to the&nbsp;EV theme.</p>\n<p>RBC analyst Joe Spak also covers car stocks. He, like Jonas, rates GM and Aptiv stock Buy but rates Tesla stock Hold. Those reports were taken seriously by both tech and car analysts because Apple has had car ambitions stretching back years—and because Apple is huge. The tech giant has a market capitalization roughly equal to the market cap of all car makers on the globe, combined. That includes the most valuable car company on the planet:Tesla(TSLA).\nHyundai Motor(005380.Korea),Kia Motors(000270.Korea), as well as U.S. EVstart-up Canoo(GOEV), have all been tied to Apple in reports. Nissan is the latest car company to be linked. Nissan stock fell almost 3% Monday after Reuters reported Nissan’s denial it was working with Apple.\nApple, and the car companies, haven’t commented on Apple’s car plans. Apple wasn’t immediately available to comment on Nissan reports on Tuesday.\nOutside of temporary impacts on car companies directly linked to Apple, car stocks aren’t really reacting to iCar news. Crying wolf is one reason: Nothing concrete has come from repeated speculation. And of course, an Apple car would be years away—another reason auto investors aren’t too concerned for the moment.\nThat doesn’t mean an Apple car won’t matter, or that news of potential partnerships can be discounted. Wedbush analyst Dan Ives expects a formal announcement in 2021. “At this point it’s a matter of when, not if, Apple will enter the EV race over the next few years,” wrote Ives in a Monday research report. He assigns an 85% probability that Apple will make an announcement in three to six months and calls Hyundai and Volkswagen(VOW.Germany) his top two choices for an Apple partnership.\nHyundai has its own modular EV platform. That’s one reason Ives likes Hyundai as a possibility, although other auto makers, including General Motors(GM), have similar approaches to electric-vehicle development. Volkswagen, for its part, has big EV ambitions. It is also a large shareholder of QuantumScape(QS), which is pioneering solid-state, lithium anode EV batteries. Those batteries promise lower cost, better safety, faster charging, and more range. Both things could make Volkswagen attractive to a partner.\nIves covers mainly technology stocks. He covers Apple, rating shares outperform and has a $175 price target for shares. He also covers Telsa stock, rating shares Hold with a $950 price target for shares. Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi, covers both as well. He rates Apple stock Hold and has a $132 price target for shares. He is more bearish on Tesla though. He believes an Apple car would make it harder for Tesla to meet its volume growth goal of 50% a year on average for the next few years. “The automotive market has historically been highly fragmented, with strong regional brands and preferences,” wrote Sacconaghi in a recent research report. “It is uncertain to us that amid massive new competition and entry, the market will ultimately become more consolidated and/or have one outsized winner.”\nThat’s bad news for Tesla in his mind. He rates Tesla shares Sell and has a $180 price target for the stock, well below where shares are trading.\nMorgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas covers cars and not Apple. But he is bullish on Tesla stock, rating shares Buy with an $880 price target. An Apple car entry could speed EV penetration, which would benefit all EV makers. In addition, Tesla “can iterate industry-leading battery technology for another four or five years before Apple may be on the scene,” wrote Jonas in a recent research report. “But at some point, today’s EV players must share the sandbox.”\nMore EV players, however, aren’t enough to shake his confidence in Tesla stock. They upgraded the stock from neutral to buy and set a price target of $1,720 per share. That provides MercadoLibre with additional upside of another 10% even from this afternoon's elevated price levels.</p><p>BTIG likes the strategy that MercadoLibre has been following, especially given the way that it has been able to add in ancillary services to its core e-commerce marketplace. The Mercado Pago payment network has been a hit all on its own, and it's generating considerable traffic from outside the MercadoLibre ecosystem. It also appears that the company is gaining market share overall from other players in the key Brazilian market.</p><p><b>Investors might like Okta's big buy after all</b></p><p>Shares of Okta were up 8%, continuing an advance that has taken the cyber-identity specialist's stock up about 20% from its recent lows. The stock was down as much as 30%, but fundamentally, Okta looks like it's doing things right.</p><p>The company originally lost ground when it reported fourth-quarter financial results last week. Despite year-over-year revenue gains of 40% and a modest profit for the period, investors weren't sure how to take guidance that suggested somewhat slower revenue growth and a possible loss.</p><p>Also raising a few questions wasOkta's $6.5 billion acquisition bidfor privately held Auth0, which focuses on customer identity management. That's a growth area, and some have said that the Auth0 product actually has some advantages over Okta's competing offering that made a buyout a win-win for Okta. Yet when the market was losing faith in growth stocks, it seemed like an ill-timed foray.</p><p>It's clear, though, that Okta isn't going to have any shortage of clients looking for identity verification services. That awareness is lifting the stock once again, and it could help build more momentum for Okta in the long run.</p><p><b>Paying the piper</b></p><p>Lastly, shares of PayPal Holdings gained about 5%. The payment network specialist has taken a 25% hit, but it's rising on a number of strategic moves.</p><p>First,PayPal recently finalized its agreement to buy Curv, a cryptocurrency security company. Crypto has been a big business for PayPal since late last year, when it started offering select tokens through its app. With crypto prices back near record levels, investors are excited about the potential for PayPal to keep competing effectively in the space.</p><p>Meanwhile, PayPal has also embraced efforts to allow customers to make purchases using short-term installment plans, breaking up purchase prices into four payments.
