Powell; Bitcoin ","content":"
\n Stock futures fall modestly ahead of testimony from Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell; Bitcoin falls to below $32,000; Torchlight Energy extends record gains.\n
\n
Here are five things you must know for Tuesday, June 22:
\n
1. Stock Futures Slip Ahead of Testimony From Fed's Powell
\n
Stock futures traded modestly lower Tuesday ahead of testimony from Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, who is expected to tell Congress the economy has shown \"sustained improvement\" but that the recovery has accelerated inflation.
\n
Contracts linked to the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 34 points, S&P 500 futures were down 5 points and futures on the tech-heavy Nasdaq declined 27 points.
\n
The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note steadied early Tuesday at 1.499%.
\n
“Widespread vaccinations have joined unprecedented monetary and fiscal policy actions in providing strong support to the recovery. Indicators of economic activity and employment have continued to strengthen, and real GDP this year appears to be on track to post its fastest rate of increase in decades,” Powell said in written comments ahead of a House panel hearing Tuesday.
\n
“Much of this rapid growth reflects the continued bounce back in activity from depressed levels,” the Fed chief added.
\n
Powell said inflation has increased “notably” in recent months but reiterated he expects rising price pressures to only be temporary and to eventually ease back to the central bank's 2% target.
\n
Powell’s remarks follow a meeting of the Fed’s policymaking committee last week, when officials signaled they could boost interest rates and begin tapering asset purchases sooner than expected.
\n
The Fed's hawkish tilt led to a selloff on Wall Street. But stocks rebounded Monday -the S&P 500 gained 1.4%- to recoup much of last week's losses.
\n
2. Tuesday's Calendar: Powell Testimony, Existing Home Sales
\n
Theeconomic calendarin the U.S. Tuesday includes Existing Home Sales for May at 10 a.m. ET.
\n
Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell will appear before the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis at 2 p.m.
\n
Korn Ferry (KFY) -Get Report, the management consulting firm, is expected to post quarterly earnings on Tuesday.
\n
3. Bitcoin Falls to Below $32,000
\n
Bitcoin fell to below $32,000 early Tuesday, raising the prospects for a steeper selloff if the world's largest cryptocurrency breaches $30,000.
\n
“We’re most likely going to continue to trade within the
\n
$30,000 to $40,000 range and, hopefully, $30,000 will hold as
\n
the low of the year,” Antoni Trenchev, co-founder of crypto
\n
lender Nexo in London, told Boomberg. “If not, we should revisit $25,000 and even $20,000 before the next leg up.”
\n
Early Tuesday, Bitcoin was at $31,351, down 5.51%. It and other digital currencies have been subject to an intensifying crackdown in China.
\n
Bitcoin dropped to a two-week low Monday following a report that said the Agricultural Bank of China, one of the country’s biggest banks, published a statement outlining aban that prohibits customers from doing any business with cryptocurrencies.
\n
4. Torchlight Energy Extends Gains
\n
Torchlight Energy Resources (TRCH) -Get Report extended gains Tuesday after jumping to a record high in the previous session as the oil and natural gas developer was touted on retail trading forums as a potential short squeeze.
\n
The stock rose 13.41% to $11.25 in premarket trading Tuesday. It rose more than 58% on Monday and has gained 1,311% so far in 2021.
\n
Torchlight said Monday it agreed to extend to June 30 the date by which it must close its merger with Canada's Metamaterial.
\n
5. Delta Plans to Hire 1,000 More Pilots by Next Summer
\n
Delta Air Lines (DAL) -Get Report plans to hire more than 1,000 pilots by next summer as the travel industry recovers, according to reports from Bloomberg and Reuters.
\n
Domestic leisure travel will return to pre-pandemic volumes
\n
this month, said John Laughter, Delta’s operations chief, in a
\n
memo to flight-operations employees on Monday, Bloomberg reported. He added that travel restrictions
\n
across the Atlantic should ease in the second half of the year.
\n
Bloomberg noted Delta had 12,940 pilots at the end of last year, meaning the new additions would increase its number of pilots by about 8%.
\n
Delta also said it expects to report a profit in June.
\n
Delta shares rose slightly early Tuesday to $45.79.
","source":"lsy1610613172068","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Torchlight Energy, Bitcoin, Jerome Powell: 5 Things You Must Know Tuesday
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nTorchlight Energy, Bitcoin, Jerome Powell: 5 Things You Must Know Tuesday\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-06-22 18:15 GMT+8 The Street\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Stock futures fall modestly ahead of testimony from Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell; Bitcoin falls to below $32,000; Torchlight Energy extends record gains.\n\nHere are five things you must know ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"SPY":"标普500ETF",".IXIC":"NASDAQ Composite",".DJI":"道琼斯",".SPX":"S&P 500 Index"},"source_url":"https://www.thestreet.com/markets/5-things-you-must-know-before-market-opens-tuesday-062221","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1128168014","content_text":"Stock futures fall modestly ahead of testimony from Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell; Bitcoin falls to below $32,000; Torchlight Energy extends record gains.\n\nHere are five things you must know for Tuesday, June 22:\n1. That's understandable, with several of them del","content":"
Meme stocks have been all the rage so far this year. That's understandable, with several of them delivering triple-digit and even four-digit percentage gains.
\n
However, what goes up can come down. Analysts don't expect the online frenzy fueling the ginormous jumps for some of the most popular stocks will be sustainable. Here are three meme stocks that Wall Street thinks will plunge by more than 20% within the next 12 months.
\n
AMC Entertainment
\n
AMC Entertainment(NYSE:AMC)ranks as the best-performing meme stock of all. Shares of the movie theater operator have skyrocketed close to 2,500% year to date.
\n
The consensus among analysts, though, is that the stock could lose 90% of its current value. Even the most optimistic analyst surveyed by Refinitiv has a price target for AMC that's more than 70% below the current share price.
\n
But isn't AMC's business picking up? Yep. The easing of restrictions has enabled the company to reopen 99% of its U.S. theaters. AMC could benefit as seating capacity limitations imposed by state and local governments are raised. Thereleases of multiple movies this summerand later this year that are likely to be hits should also help.
\n
However, Wall Street clearly believes that AMC's share price has gotten way ahead of its business prospects. The stock is trading at nearly eight times higher than it was before the COVID-19 pandemic.
\n
Clover Health Investments
\n
Only a few days ago, it looked like Clover Health Investments(NASDAQ:CLOV)might push AMC to the side as the hottest meme stock. Retail investors viewed Clover as a primeshort squeezecandidate.
\n
Since the beginning of June, shares of Clover Health have jumped more than 65%. Analysts, however, don't expect those gains to last. The average price target for the stock is 25% below the current share price.
\n
Clover Health's valuation does seem to have gotten out of hand. The healthcare stock currently trades at more than 170 times trailing-12-month sales. That's a nosebleed level, especially considering that the company is the subject of investigations by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission.
\n
Still, Clover Health could deliver improving financial results this year. The company hopes to significantly increase its membership by targeting the original Medicare program. This represents a major new market opportunity in addition to its current Medicare Advantage business.
\n
Sundial Growers
\n
At one point earlier this year, Sundial Growers(NASDAQ:SNDL)appeared to be a legitimate contender to become the biggest winner among meme stocks. The Canadian marijuana stock vaulted more than 520% higher year to date before giving up much of its gains. However, Sundial's share price has still more than doubled in 2021.
\n
Analysts anticipate that the pot stock could fall even further. The consensus price target for Sundial reflects a 23% discount to its current share price. One analyst even thinks the stock could sink 55%.
\n
There certainly are reasons to be pessimistic about Sundial's core cannabis business. The company's net cannabis revenue fell year over year in the first quarter of 2021. That's understandable, with several of them delivering triple-digit and even four-digit percentage gains.\nHowever, what goes up can come down. Analysts don't expect the online frenzy fueling the ginormous jumps for some of the most popular stocks will be sustainable. Here are three meme stocks that Wall Street thinks will plunge by more than 20% within the next 12 months.\nAMC Entertainment\nAMC Entertainment(NYSE:AMC)ranks as the best-performing meme stock of all. Shares of the movie theater operator have skyrocketed close to 2,500% year to date.\nThe consensus among analysts, though, is that the stock could lose 90% of its current value. Even the most optimistic analyst surveyed by Refinitiv has a price target for AMC that's more than 70% below the current share price.\nBut isn't AMC's business picking up? Yep. The easing of restrictions has enabled the company to reopen 99% of its U.S. theaters. AMC could benefit as seating capacity limitations imposed by state and local governments are raised. Thereleases of multiple movies this summerand later this year that are likely to be hits should also help.\nHowever, Wall Street clearly believes that AMC's share price has gotten way ahead of its business prospects. The stock is trading at nearly eight times higher than it was before the COVID-19 pandemic.\nClover Health Investments\nOnly a few days ago, it looked like Clover Health Investments(NASDAQ:CLOV)might push AMC to the side as the hottest meme stock. Retail investors viewed Clover as a primeshort squeezecandidate.\nSince the beginning of June, shares of Clover Health have jumped more than 65%. Analysts, however, don't expect those gains to last. The average price target for the stock is 25% below the current share price.\nClover Health's valuation does seem to have gotten out of hand. The healthcare stock currently trades at more than 170 times trailing-12-month sales. That's a nosebleed level, especially considering that the company is the subject of investigations by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission.\nStill, Clover Health could deliver improving financial results this year. The company hopes to significantly increase its membership by targeting the original Medicare program. This represents a major new market opportunity in addition to its current Medicare Advantage business.\nSundial Growers\nAt one point earlier this year, Sundial Growers(NASDAQ:SNDL)appeared to be a legitimate contender to become the biggest winner among meme stocks. The Canadian marijuana stock vaulted more than 520% higher year to date before giving up much of its gains. However, Sundial's share price has still more than doubled in 2021.\nAnalysts anticipate that the pot stock could fall even further. The consensus price target for Sundial reflects a 23% discount to its current share price. One analyst even thinks the stock could sink 55%.\nThere certainly are reasons to be pessimistic about Sundial's core cannabis business. The company's net cannabis revenue fell year over year in the first quarter of 2021. Although Sundial is taking steps that it hopes will turn things around, it remains to be seen if those efforts will succeed.\nSundial's business deals could give investors reasons for optimism. After all, the company posted positive adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) in Q1 due to its investments.\nHowever, the cash that Sundial is using to make these investments has come at the cost of increased dilution of its stock. The company can't afford any additional dilution without having to resort to desperate measures to keep its listing on the Nasdaq stock exchange.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"CLOV":0.9,"SNDL":0.9,"AMC":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":498,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":165372534,"gmtCreate":1624101441728,"gmtModify":1703828827641,"author":{"id":"3575112265774661","authorId":"3575112265774661","name":"Bevvvvvvvv","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9b4823db6016a427d1a69a33455826ba","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3575112265774661","authorIdStr":"3575112265774661"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"[Miser] ","listText":"[Miser] ","text":"[Miser]","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/165372534","repostId":"1113942445","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":911,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":162451330,"gmtCreate":1624072522420,"gmtModify":1703828235117,"author":{"id":"3575112265774661","authorId":"3575112265774661","name":"Bevvvvvvvv","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9b4823db6016a427d1a69a33455826ba","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3575112265774661","authorIdStr":"3575112265774661"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Hmm Where is this going ","listText":"Hmm Where is this going ","text":"Hmm Where is this going","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c98999995c2fc273f3c512b57109d141","width":"1125","height":"3329"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/162451330","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":474,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":162427983,"gmtCreate":1624072357842,"gmtModify":1703828229620,"author":{"id":"3575112265774661","authorId":"3575112265774661","name":"Bevvvvvvvv","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9b4823db6016a427d1a69a33455826ba","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3575112265774661","authorIdStr":"3575112265774661"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$JD.com(JD)$Come on ","listText":"$JD.com(JD)$Come on ","text":"$JD.com(JD)$Come on","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/743b6437786823dd6dc556a4574f1809","width":"1242","height":"1767"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/162427983","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":773,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":163315421,"gmtCreate":1623859702263,"gmtModify":1703821784573,"author":{"id":"3575112265774661","authorId":"3575112265774661","name":"Bevvvvvvvv","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9b4823db6016a427d1a69a33455826ba","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3575112265774661","authorIdStr":"3575112265774661"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$JD.com(JD)$Ohhhh","listText":"$JD.com(JD)$Ohhhh","text":"$JD.com(JD)$Ohhhh","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e7ec6c5e18ad85693f69a10e71ebaad9","width":"1242","height":"1767"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/163315421","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":318,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":187151264,"gmtCreate":1623747559958,"gmtModify":1704210269721,"author":{"id":"3575112265774661","authorId":"3575112265774661","name":"Bevvvvvvvv","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9b4823db6016a427d1a69a33455826ba","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3575112265774661","authorIdStr":"3575112265774661"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Omg ","listText":"Omg ","text":"Omg","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/187151264","repostId":"1167323938","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1167323938","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1623723810,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1167323938?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-06-15 10:23","market":"us","language":"en","title":"My 3 Favorite Stocks Right Now","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1167323938","media":"Motley Fool","summary":"These companies make good long-term core holdings.\nStock investing starts with picking the right com","content":"
These companies make good long-term core holdings.
\n
Stock investing starts with picking the right companies. Amazon
\n
Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) has become synonymous with e-commerce, but the company is much more than that. It has done this by sticking to its principles, which include focusing on the customer, innovating, and planning for the long term. You can see this through its popular Amazon Prime subscription service, which includes delivery charges, and hardware devices like Alexa and Kindle. There is also its fast-growing, higher-margin Amazon Web Services (AWS) business that provides cloud computing services.
\n
Its presence is so dominant that Amazon completely changes an industry's dynamics when it decides to enter the fray. That's because it often provides cheap prices and fast delivery -- a compelling proposition. This happened when it pushed further into selling food and apparel, for instance. The company is also moving further into offering prescription drugs.
\n
While its long-term focus means Amazon is willing to forgo short-term profits, the company is hugely profitable. Its operating profit grew from 2016's $4.2 billion to $22.9 billion last year. In the first quarter, the company's profit more than doubled from $4 billion to $8.8 billion.
\n
2. Costco
\n
Costco Wholesale (NASDAQ:COST) has created quite a shopping experience. Known for its wide aisles, bulk items, and free samples, it has built a loyal and growing membership.
\n
Costco's simple formula is hard to replicate: It focuses on high-quality merchandise and services, and sells them at low unit prices. Costco's paid members have grown from 47.6 million in 2016 to 58.1 million last year (the fiscal year ends on June 30). Meanwhile, its retention rate has hovered around 90%.
\n
With a focus on customer needs, it even has a generous return policy to help members have confidence in their purchases.
\n
Management also keeps an eye on improving results. It has had positive same-store sales (comps) for many years, including a 9% increase last year after excluding the effects of gasoline price changes and foreign currency exchange translation. Operating income grew from $3.7 billion to $5.4 billion over the last five years.
\n
Recent results also provide encouragement that management continues to execute. Comps increased by 15.2% for the first three quarters of 2021, and operating income grew by more than 26% to $4.4 billion.
\n
While income investors can find higher yields than Costco's 0.8%, it does have a history of annually raising dividends. This includes increasing May's payment to $0.79 from the previous quarter's $0.70. But better still, the board of directors has declared large special dividends every few years. The most recent was a $10 payment last December.
\n
3. Walmart
\n
Walmart (NYSE:WMT) has built itself into the world's largest retailer, serving more than 240 million customers every week. The company, which opened its first discount store nearly six decades ago, squeezes costs and passes these savings on to the customer. This allows Walmart to offer the lowest prices on its goods, making it difficult for competitors to keep up.
\n
It isn't sitting still, either. It is keeping pace with online competitors, namely Amazon, by investing in technology to provide a seamless omnichannel experience to its shoppers. This includes launching the subscription service Walmart+, which provides delivery, gasoline discounts, and faster checkout at its stores.
\n
Last year, its adjusted revenue rose by 7.7% to $564.2 billion, driving operating income 9.3% higher to $23.4 billion. In the first quarter, revenue growth was about 2%, and management expects a low-single-digit percentage increase for the year. Its guidance calls for flattish operating income.
\n
While this outlook undoubtedly disappointed some investors, I'm not concerned. Management has its eyes on the long-term picture, and it is investing in technology to better serve its customers and remain a dominant retailer.
\n
Walmart also offers a 1.6% yield, and it has also raised its quarterly dividend annually since initiating a payout in 1974. Already aDividend Aristocrat, it will become a Dividend King when the streak hits 50 years.
\n
While these are three different companies in various stages, each is a strong addition to your portfolio. Adding them will give you a high-growth stock, a steady grower that tends to pay large dividends every few years, and a dominant retailer that continues to grow and regularly increase payments to shareholders.
\n
That's a winning combination that should make these core holdings a great addition to your portfolio.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
My 3 Favorite Stocks Right Now
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nMy 3 Favorite Stocks Right Now\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-06-15 10:23 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
These companies make good long-term core holdings.\nStock investing starts with picking the right companies. It has had positive same-store sales (comps) for many years, including a 9% increase last year after excluding the effects of gasoline price changes and foreign currency exchange translation. Operating income grew from $3.7 billion to $5.4 billion over the last five years.\nRecent results also provide encouragement that management continues to execute. Comps increased by 15.2% for the first three quarters of 2021, and operating income grew by more than 26% to $4.4 billion.\nWhile income investors can find higher yields than Costco's 0.8%, it does have a history of annually raising dividends. This includes increasing May's payment to $0.79 from the previous quarter's $0.70. But better still, the board of directors has declared large special dividends every few years. The most recent was a $10 payment last December.\n3. Walmart\nWalmart (NYSE:WMT) has built itself into the world's largest retailer, serving more than 240 million customers every week. The company, which opened its first discount store nearly six decades ago, squeezes costs and passes these savings on to the customer. This allows Walmart to offer the lowest prices on its goods, making it difficult for competitors to keep up.\nIt isn't sitting still, either. It is keeping pace with online competitors, namely Amazon, by investing in technology to provide a seamless omnichannel experience to its shoppers. This includes launching the subscription service Walmart+, which provides delivery, gasoline discounts, and faster checkout at its stores.\nLast year, its adjusted revenue rose by 7.7% to $564.2 billion, driving operating income 9.3% higher to $23.4 billion. In the first quarter, revenue growth was about 2%, and management expects a low-single-digit percentage increase for the year. Its guidance calls for flattish operating income.\nWhile this outlook undoubtedly disappointed some investors, I'm not concerned. Management has its eyes on the long-term picture, and it is investing in technology to better serve its customers and remain a dominant retailer.\nWalmart also offers a 1.6% yield, and it has also raised its quarterly dividend annually since initiating a payout in 1974. Already aDividend Aristocrat, it will become a Dividend King when the streak hits 50 years.\nWhile these are three different companies in various stages, each is a strong addition to your portfolio. Adding them will give you a high-growth stock, a steady grower that tends to pay large dividends every few years, and a dominant retailer that continues to grow and regularly increase payments to shareholders.\nThat's a winning combination that should make these core holdings a great addition to your portfolio.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"COST":0.9,"AMZN":0.9,"WMT":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":608,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":187189279,"gmtCreate":1623746613591,"gmtModify":1704210226661,"author":{"id":"3575112265774661","authorId":"3575112265774661","name":"Bevvvvvvvv","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9b4823db6016a427d1a69a33455826ba","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3575112265774661","authorIdStr":"3575112265774661"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"<a That's understandable, with several of them delivering triple-digit and even four-digit percentage gains.
Although Sundial is taking steps that it hopes will turn things around, it remains to be seen if those efforts will succeed.
\n
Sundial's business deals could give investors reasons for optimism. After all, the company posted positive adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) in Q1 due to its investments.
\n
However, the cash that Sundial is using to make these investments has come at the cost of increased dilution of its stock. The company can't afford any additional dilution without having to resort to desperate measures to keep its listing on the Nasdaq stock exchange.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
3 Meme Stocks Wall Street Predicts Will Plunge More Than 20%
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n3 Meme Stocks Wall Street Predicts Will Plunge More Than 20%\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-06-19 09:13 GMT+8 fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Meme stocks have been all the rage so far this year. Shorts","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1156318495","media":"Bloomberg","summary":"(Bloomberg) -- China Evergrande Group shares posted wild swings on Monday, rallying as much as 7% af","content":"
(Bloomberg) -- China Evergrande Group shares posted wild swings on Monday, rallying as much as 7% after touching a four-year low in Hong Kong, squeezing short sellers.
\n
Shares of Chinese billionaire Hui Ka Yan’s flagship property developer jumped to as much as HK$10.60, rebounding from the lowest since May 2017. The stock has dropped about 50% since he clinched a deal with investors to avert a cash crunch in September.
\n
Short interest in Evergrande shares has surged threefold in three weeks, putting investors betting on further declines at risk of a so-called short squeeze if prices move against them. Compounding those risks, the developer has turned to its favored tactic of repurchasing shares to force bearish speculators out of their positions. It spent about HK$529 million ($68 million) on buybacks since June 7, according to Bloomberg calculations.
\n
It’s not surprising that some investors are betting on a short-term rebound after the shares lost more than 40% from their January high, Castor Pang, head of research at Core Pacific Yamaichi, said by phone. Investors may also speculating on further buybacks by Evergrande to combat short sellers, he said.
\n
Short interest in Evergrande reached 22.8% of the company’s free float as of Thursday, the highest level since September 2018, data compiled by IHS Markit and Bloomberg show.
\n
There are so few Evergrande shares readily available that traders would need about 22 days to cover their bearish bets -- or buy back borrowed stock to close out an open short position. That increases the risk of a short squeeze, when hedge funds are forced to liquidate their positions at increasingly higher prices.
\n
Worries over the future of the world’s most indebted developer have grown in recent weeks after affiliates missed payments and Caixin Media’s WeNews reported that regulators are looking into Evergrande’s ties to Shengjing Bank Co. in northern China. The stock has dropped about 50% since he clinched a deal with investors to avert a cash crunch in September.\nShort interest in Evergrande shares has surged threefold in three weeks, putting investors betting on further declines at risk of a so-called short squeeze if prices move against them. Compounding those risks, the developer has turned to its favored tactic of repurchasing shares to force bearish speculators out of their positions. It spent about HK$529 million ($68 million) on buybacks since June 7, according to Bloomberg calculations.\nIt’s not surprising that some investors are betting on a short-term rebound after the shares lost more than 40% from their January high, Castor Pang, head of research at Core Pacific Yamaichi, said by phone. Investors may also speculating on further buybacks by Evergrande to combat short sellers, he said.\nShort interest in Evergrande reached 22.8% of the company’s free float as of Thursday, the highest level since September 2018, data compiled by IHS Markit and Bloomberg show.\nThere are so few Evergrande shares readily available that traders would need about 22 days to cover their bearish bets -- or buy back borrowed stock to close out an open short position. That increases the risk of a short squeeze, when hedge funds are forced to liquidate their positions at increasingly higher prices.\nWorries over the future of the world’s most indebted developer have grown in recent weeks after affiliates missed payments and Caixin Media’s WeNews reported that regulators are looking into Evergrande’s ties to Shengjing Bank Co. in northern China. Bondholders have rushed for the exit too, with a key dollar note trading near its lowest level since April 2020.\nThe selloff worsened after WeNews reported last week that a local government discussed with Evergrande about paring its stake in Shengjing Bank, and the banking watchdog said it would curb a key source of financing for developers to control risk.\nThe plunge in the shares has hurt the wealth of founder Hui. At $17 billion, his net worth has tumbled by more than a third since September.\nEvergrande’s long-dated dollar bonds were almost unchanged on Monday even as some short-dated notes have staged a comeback. Amazon
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
These companies make good long-term core holdings.\nStock investing starts with picking the right companies. This allows Walmart to offer the lowest prices on its goods, making it difficult for competitors to keep up.\nIt isn't sitting still, either. It is keeping pace with online competitors, namely Amazon, by investing in technology to provide a seamless omnichannel experience to its shoppers. This includes launching the subscription service Walmart+, which provides delivery, gasoline discounts, and faster checkout at its stores.\nLast year, its adjusted revenue rose by 7.7% to $564.2 billion, driving operating income 9.3% higher to $23.4 billion. In the first quarter, revenue growth was about 2%, and management expects a low-single-digit percentage increase for the year. Its guidance calls for flattish operating income.\nWhile this outlook undoubtedly disappointed some investors, I'm not concerned. Management has its eyes on the long-term picture, and it is investing in technology to better serve its customers and remain a dominant retailer.\nWalmart also offers a 1.6% yield, and it has also raised its quarterly dividend annually since initiating a payout in 1974. Already aDividend Aristocrat, it will become a Dividend King when the streak hits 50 years.\nWhile these are three different companies in various stages, each is a strong addition to your portfolio. Adding them will give you a high-growth stock, a steady grower that tends to pay large dividends every few years, and a dominant retailer that continues to grow and regularly increase payments to shareholders.\nThat's a winning combination that should make these core holdings a great addition to your portfolio.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"COST":0.9,"AMZN":0.9,"WMT":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":608,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
