Ethereum has also been flying, following a technical upgrade in its underlying blockchain network.</p>\n<p>The down day may also reflect a “sell the news” dynamic after El Salvador became the first country to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender, alongside the dollar– the country’s other official currency.</p>\n<p>Merchants in El Salvador are now supposed to accept Bitcoin for goods and services. Citizens have been promised $30 worth of Bitcoin in their digital wallets by the government. McDonald’s has started accepting Bitcoin in El Salvador, according to Reuters. And the government of president Nayib Bukele has been buying Bitcoin, including at least $20 million worth, ahead of the official launch.</p>\n<p>But El Salvador’s crypto experiment isn’t sitting well with organizations like the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, which have warned El Salvador that its adoption as legal tender could imperil financial stability. Other countries are cracking down on crypto transactions, mining, and exchanges, indicating that El Salvador may be an outlier for now.</p>\n<p>Crypto watchers are also blaming technical factors for the market downturn. Assuming prices don’t suddenly surge, Bitcoin is now in for “outside-down” day, says Katie Stockton, founder and managing partner of Fairlead Strategies, a crypto-trading research firm. The means Bitcoin is trading in a wider range and headed for a lower close than yesterday (assuming a 5 p.m. cutoff, though it trades 24 hours).</p>\n<p>“The implications are for additional consolidation,” she says. So far, the selloff looks like a minor setback, she adds, since Bitcoin hasn’t breached its 50-day moving average around $44,000, which is its next support level.</p>\n<p>“A breach of $44,000 isn’t a breakdown,” she says. “It’s a test of the 50-day moving average. “There is strong support for Bitcoin and most crytpos pretty close to their current lows.”</p>\n<p>Other factors that may have contributed to the selloff include reports of outages and “unscheduled maintenance” at Bitfinix, a leading crypto exchange. Coinbase Global (ticker: COIN) also experienced a spike in outages around noon, according to Downdetector.</p>\n<p>Even if prices stabilize from here, it’s a reminder that Bitcoin and other cryptos remain vulnerable to rapid-fire declines. Ethereum has also been flying, following a technical upgrade in its underlying blockchain network.\nThe down day may also reflect a “sell the news” dynamic after El Salvador became the first country to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender, alongside the dollar– the country’s other official currency.\nMerchants in El Salvador are now supposed to accept Bitcoin for goods and services. Citizens have been promised $30 worth of Bitcoin in their digital wallets by the government. McDonald’s has started accepting Bitcoin in El Salvador, according to Reuters. And the government of president Nayib Bukele has been buying Bitcoin, including at least $20 million worth, ahead of the official launch.\nBut El Salvador’s crypto experiment isn’t sitting well with organizations like the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, which have warned El Salvador that its adoption as legal tender could imperil financial stability. Other countries are cracking down on crypto transactions, mining, and exchanges, indicating that El Salvador may be an outlier for now.\nCrypto watchers are also blaming technical factors for the market downturn. Assuming prices don’t suddenly surge, Bitcoin is now in for “outside-down” day, says Katie Stockton, founder and managing partner of Fairlead Strategies, a crypto-trading research firm. GME stock saw over 14 million shares swap hands against a daily average of 5.3 million; meanwhile, AMC saw 221 million shares trade against an average of 169 million.</p>\n<p>Meme Stocks Mania Takes Off Again With GME, AMC Bull Runs</p>\n<p>The trading volume is triggering another short squeeze between the two stocks; GME has 17% of its float sold short, while 16% of AMC’s float is short. As a result, GME stock soared a whopping 27% in the afternoon, and AMC grew over 20%. The squeezes were not relegated to just GameStop and AMC, either — popular meme plays&nbsp;<b>Clover Health</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>CLOV</u></b>) and&nbsp;<b>Workhorse</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>WKHS</u></b>) grew 10% and 6%, respectively, although both traded at lower than average volumes.</p>\n<p>What’s interesting about the squeezes is that they all occurred at around the same time. After trading sideways through the morning, these stocks began to see the rapid appreciation beginning just after 1 p.m. EST. Republicans slashed the levy to 21% from 35% as part of their 2017 tax law.\nThe administration also aims to boost the global minimum tax for multinational corporations and ensure they pay at least 21%. Today, it’s solidly mid-cap, with 51% of its assets in large-company stocks. The average market cap of its holdings has increased from $5 billion last March to $39 billion by the end of February. That, in large part, is due to how much many holdings have run up. Notably, top holdingTesla(TSLA) has returned 500% in the past year even after the recent pullback.</p><p>Many active funds have limitations on the size of companies they can buy and continue to own. ARK Innovation doesn’t have such constraints. It’s open to stocks up and down the capitalization spectrum—from the $594 billion Tesla to the $1 billionCerus(CERS). “We don’t really look at market caps. We are pretty agnostic to that,” says Ren Leggi, ARK’s client portfolio manager. “We’re looking at where innovation takes us.”</p><p>The growth of its existing holdings only partially explains the fund’s tilt toward larger stocks. Over the past few months, ARK Innovation has also been selling shares in smaller-cap firms, many in biotech, includingOrganovo Holdings(ONVO),Seres Therapeutics(MCRB), Compugen(CGEN), andEditas Medicine(EDIT).</p><p>Meanwhile, the fund has added a significant amount of large-cap internet stocks likePayPal Holdings(PYPL), Shopify(SHOP),Zoom Video Communications(ZM); and foreign firms such as Tencent Holdings(TCEHY), Baidu(BIDU),Sea(SE), and Nintendo(NTDOY). The ETF owned none of those names last July.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1e1bf566255ea478e6111c62695a5ade\" tg-width=\"677\" tg-height=\"357\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">The recent trading has shifted ARK Innovation’s sector composition as well. In March 2020, biotech and diagnostics were the largest industries in the fund, making up 22% and 15% of the portfolio, respectively. By the end of February, biotech only made up 14%, and diagnostics, 8%.</p><p>Meanwhile, ARK Innovation has increased assets in internet and software stocks—from 6% of each in March 2020, to 15% and 9% as of February. Shopify, which wasn’t in ARK Innovation as of last October, is now the eighth-largest stock in the fund with a 3.1% weight.</p><p>Still, compared to its peers in the mid-cap growth category, ARK Innovation is relatively heavy on healthcare and light on technology, says Amy Arnott, portfolio strategist at Morningstar.</p><p>Some suspect the shift toward bigger companies is the result of ARK Innovation’s unprecedented growth. The fund attracted $16 billion in new assets in the past year. If that money was invested in smaller companies, it couldquickly bump up ARK’s stakein them to perilous levels. From that perspective, putting that money in more liquid large-cap stocks seems a safer option. “The bigger they get, the more difficult it is for them to establish meaningful positions in smaller-cap stocks,” Arnott says.</p><p>ARK denies that recent trading decisions have anything to do with capacity, saying those moves are driven by conviction, valuation, and tactical considerations. For example, ARK Innovation exited DNA sequencing firmIllumina(ILMN)—once its second-largest holding behind Tesla—and added rivalPacific Biosciences of California(PACB), because it sees a shift of disruption from short-read to long-read genomic sequencing, says Leggi. This flow is likely to dampen volatility in some names while exacerbating stock price moves in others.</p><p>How to trade this?</p><p>As Goldman's Vishal Vivek writes, at major expirations, options traders track situations where<b>a large amount of open interest is set to expire.</b>In situations where there is a significant amount of expiring open interest in at-the-money strikes (strike prices at or very near the current stockprice), delta-hedging activity can impact the underlying stock’s trading that day. If market makers or other options traders who delta-hedge their positions are net long ATM options, expiration-related flow could have the effect of dampening stock price movements, causing the stock price to settle near the strike with large open interest. This situation is often referred to as a “pin” and can be an ideal situation fora large investor trying to enter/exit a stock position. Alternatively, if delta-hedgers are net short ATM options (have a “negative gamma” position), their hedging activity could exacerbate stock price moves.</p><p>What that means it expiration-related trades may cause trading activity to aggressively pick up for stocks with a significant amount of ATM open interest.</p><p>So to help traders looking to hop on for daytrading opportunities, here is a table identifying possible focus stocks with large ATM open interest expiring today, which is compared to the average daily volume of the underlying stocks. As Goldman puts it, \"<i>expiration-related activity is likely to have more of an impact if the open interest represents a significant percentage of the stock’s volume.\"</i></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0dac61cb87c2f2700d8a0e8e64324f81\" tg-width=\"500\" tg-height=\"638\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">Finally, for what it's worth, this morning our friends at SpotGamma write that this has been a rather strange OPEX cycle, \"with a consistent almost mechanical bid pushing markets higher. We’ve not seen the Call Wall “breached” this many times before, but there are other aberrations that we’ve mentioned in previous notes – like net put sales. We’ve got some theories on this we are posting in a longer form piece.\"</p><p>According to SG, because implied volatility has now compressed (ie VIX at new lows) there is now more potential for “long term” volatility. Recall how as of late any sharp, violent drop in markets was bought so quickly (see chart below).<b>These bursts lower coincided with record VIX spikes, but a reflective snap-back bid would bring a market recovery of equal force as the VIX&nbsp; (i.e. implied volatility) reversed.</b></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ae7a60d873792b825bdda669cafa0ed3\" tg-width=\"500\" tg-height=\"297\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">And one other curious observation from SpotGamma:</p><blockquote>When implied volatility is very high, its very sensitive to market moves and also signaling that markets are expecting more large moves ahead. As soon as markets would pause or catch a support level, that implied volatility would quickly reverse lower. <b>We often think of this analogy that if a shark stops swimming, it sinks ( partially true!). If the market stops dropping then Implied volatility sinks.</b></blockquote><p>With this, as we often talk about, lower implied volatility (ie lower VIX) signals market makers have to buy back short hedges which fuels rallies. SG's conclusion: this current level of lower implied volatility now gives the market more downside firepower.&nbsp; Starting with a lower implied volatility “slows down” that responsive “snap-back” buying mechanism.&nbsp; To wit, daily options volumes are up 70% in April, up from YTD lows of $2.4bn on 30-Mar.In total, across single stocks, $544BN of options are set to expiry today, including $305BN calls.As such, today’s expiry could be important for stocks with large open interest in at-the-money(ATM) options, as market makers delta-hedging their unusually large options portfolios will be active. This flow is likely to dampen volatility in some names while exacerbating stock price moves in others.How to trade this?As Goldman's Vishal Vivek writes, at major expirations, options traders track situations wherea large amount of open interest is set to expire.In situations where there is a significant amount of expiring open interest in at-the-money strikes (strike prices at or very near the current stockprice), delta-hedging activity can impact the underlying stock’s trading that day. If market makers or other options traders who delta-hedge their positions are net long ATM options, expiration-related flow could have the effect of dampening stock price movements, causing the stock price to settle near the strike with large open interest. Own companies that can “land and expand” in big markets</b></p>\n<p>Even though we’ve been in the digital age for years, many small companies still do much of their business on paper. Bill.comBILLwants to change that. The company was founded by CEO René Lacerte, who in the late 1990s started the online payroll company PayCycle, which was acquired by Intuit.</p>\n<p>Bill.com helps small companies go digital in accounts payable and receivable payments. But that’s just the start. Once inside a company, Bill.com digitizes other areas like cash and expense account management.</p>\n<p>Bill.com “lands and expands” at clients, but it also uses their business partners to create a network of leads.</p>\n<p>“Every vendor is a network member, even if it is not a Bill.com customer,” says Ram. This network has about 2.5 million members. Bill.com also gets prospects from its partners, including Bank of AmericaBAC,JPMorgan ChaseJPMand American ExpressAXP.Sales grew 45% in the first quarter.</p>\n<p>Founder-run companies such as this one are worth considering because they often outperform.</p>\n<p><b>2. Seek out innovators</b></p>\n<p>Ram’s portfolio contains obvious innovators, including TeslaTSLA,Amazon.comAMZNand AlphabetGOOGL,her top three positions. Let’s look beyond technology — to beer.</p>\n<p>Back in the 1980s, Boston Beer founder Jim Koch began taking share from beer giants Anheuser-Busch InBevBUDand HeinekenHEINYby rolling out successful “craft” brews, starting with Samuel Adams. Koch helped invent the craft brew category, essentially taking the country back to pre-Prohibition days when the U.S. had hundreds of regional breweries making more flavorful beers for local tastes.</p>\n<p>Boston Beer stock did very well, but then it stalled during 2015-2017 as beer sales overall went flat. In response, Boston Beer helped put a new category on the map — with its Truly Hard Seltzer brand rolled out in 2106. It remains one of the leading hard seltzers.</p>\n<p>“We were drawn to the company because of its history of innovation,” says Ram, referring to her fund’s early position from the second quarter of 2016. “The stock was doing poorly because the beer market was flattening, but they were coming up with Truly Hard Seltzer. Truly was more successful than we anticipated. It created a new category.”</p>\n<p>This penchant for innovation at Boston Beer has helped keep Ram’s fund in the name. Other successful Boston Beer brands include Twisted Tea, Angry Orchard and Dogfish Head.</p>\n<p>A key takeaway here is that to find innovative companies, look for the ones led by people who have demonstrated a knack for innovation in the past. Innovative managers tend to keep on innovating. Boston Beer continually tests new seltzers, beers, hard ciders, distilled spirits and other drinks. Shareholders are betting they will come through again.</p>\n<p>They’ll need the help. Boston Beer shares fell 20% on July 23 because so many competitors entered the hard cider niche. Sales grew 33% but net income fell 1.6% as the company jacked up advertising costs to try to combat the competition. The company slashed estimates for the year on an expected slowdown in sales growth.</p>\n<p>But don’t count out this innovator yet.</p>\n<p>“We recently announced plans to develop new innovative beverages with&nbsp;Beam Suntory&nbsp;that we are planning to launch in early 2022,” Boston Beer’s Koch said. Beam Suntory&nbsp;sells Jim Beam whiskey and other brands of spirits. “We believe these new beverages will further demonstrate our ability to innovate and grow our business as drinker preferences evolve.”</p>\n<p><b>3. Look for companies that can create and dominate a niche</b></p>\n<p>For years as the gig economy emerged, the big credit card companies didn’t really care that much if the local yoga instructor could accept payments with a credit card. SquareSQrecognized this as an opportunity. So it launched its card payment device business in 2009. Since then, it has grown by taking on larger customers, and expanding into new lines of business in financial services such as cash management, debit cards loans and tax filing. Transaction-based revenue grew 27% in the first quarter, and subscription and services revenue soared 88%.</p>\n<p>This is a great example of a company that created a business niche. But it’s also a “land and expand” company because it grows by offering customers new services. Both qualities help companies maintain the competitive advantage Ram likes see in investments.</p>\n<p><b>4. Buy companies in the early stages of rapid growth</b></p>\n<p>One way to find these is to identify companies developing products that will transform an entire industry. Ram thinks that is the case with Alnylam PharmaceuticalsALNY.It’s developing novel therapies base on a technique called RNA interference (RNAi). Inside the body, messenger RNA (mRNA) encodes proteins we need, based on signals from RNA. Sometimes mRNA gets the signals crossed, and it encodes flawed proteins. This causes diseases.</p>\n<p>Alnylam has developed a way to tweak the RNAi pathway to silence the flawed signaling and block the creation of disease-causing proteins. So far, Alnylam has four approved RNAi-based medicines that treat rare hereditary diseases. The company has a dozen other therapies in clinical studies, including six in late-stage development.</p>\n<p>“This is a completely new area of therapeutics,” says Ram. “It is a platform of products that can treat a variety of conditions.”</p>\n<p><b>5. Hold stocks for the long term</b></p>\n<p>All of the names above are large positions in Ram’s fund, which tells me that Ram and her team think they have considerably more upside. If you buy any of them, though, remember you have to do so with a multi-year time horizon. That’s what Ram’s fund does. It has a low annual portfolio turnover of 27%. In response, Boston Beer helped put a new category on the map — with its Truly Hard Seltzer brand rolled out in 2106. It remains one of the leading hard seltzers.\n“We were drawn to the company because of its history of innovation,” says Ram, referring to her fund’s early position from the second quarter of 2016. “The stock was doing poorly because the beer market was flattening, but they were coming up with Truly Hard Seltzer. Truly was more successful than we anticipated. It created a new category.”\nThis penchant for innovation at Boston Beer has helped keep Ram’s fund in the name. Other successful Boston Beer brands include Twisted Tea, Angry Orchard and Dogfish Head.\nA key takeaway here is that to find innovative companies, look for the ones led by people who have demonstrated a knack for innovation in the past. Innovative managers tend to keep on innovating. Boston Beer continually tests new seltzers, beers, hard ciders, distilled spirits and other drinks. Shareholders are betting they will come through again.\nThey’ll need the help. Boston Beer shares fell 20% on July 23 because so many competitors entered the hard cider niche. Sales grew 33% but net income fell 1.6% as the company jacked up advertising costs to try to combat the competition. The company slashed estimates for the year on an expected slowdown in sales growth.\nBut don’t count out this innovator yet.\n“We recently announced plans to develop new innovative beverages with Beam Suntory that we are planning to launch in early 2022,” Boston Beer’s Koch said. Beam Suntory sells Jim Beam whiskey and other brands of spirits. “We believe these new beverages will further demonstrate our ability to innovate and grow our business as drinker preferences evolve.”\n3. Look for companies that can create and dominate a niche\nFor years as the gig economy emerged, the big credit card companies didn’t really care that much if the local yoga instructor could accept payments with a credit card. SquareSQrecognized this as an opportunity. So it launched its card payment device business in 2009. Since then, it has grown by taking on larger customers, and expanding into new lines of business in financial services such as cash management, debit cards loans and tax filing. Transaction-based revenue grew 27% in the first quarter, and subscription and services revenue soared 88%.\nThis is a great example of a company that created a business niche. But it’s also a “land and expand” company because it grows by offering customers new services. Both qualities help companies maintain the competitive advantage Ram likes see in investments.\n4. Buy companies in the early stages of rapid growth\nOne way to find these is to identify companies developing products that will transform an entire industry. Ram thinks that is the case with Alnylam PharmaceuticalsALNY.It’s developing novel therapies base on a technique called RNA interference (RNAi). Inside the body, messenger RNA (mRNA) encodes proteins we need, based on signals from RNA. Sometimes mRNA gets the signals crossed, and it encodes flawed proteins. This causes diseases.\nAlnylam has developed a way to tweak the RNAi pathway to silence the flawed signaling and block the creation of disease-causing proteins. So far, Alnylam has four approved RNAi-based medicines that treat rare hereditary diseases. The company has a dozen other therapies in clinical studies, including six in late-stage development.\n“This is a completely new area of therapeutics,” says Ram. “It is a platform of products that can treat a variety of conditions.”\n5. Hold stocks for the long term\nAll of the names above are large positions in Ram’s fund, which tells me that Ram and her team think they have considerably more upside. If you buy any of them, though, remember you have to do so with a multi-year time horizon. That’s what Ram’s fund does. It has a low annual portfolio turnover of 27%. Things might look great now, but the next big nosedive is always waiting in the wings.</p>\n<p>It begs the question: How likely is astock market crash? Let's take a closer look.</p>\n<p><b>Double-digit declines occur every 1.87 years, on average</b></p>\n<p>To begin with the basics, stock market corrections (i.e., declines of at least 10%) are quite common in the S&amp;P 500. According to data from market analytics firm Yardeni Research, there have been 38 corrections in the S&amp;P 500 since the beginning of 1950. This works out to an average double-digit decline in the benchmark indexevery 1.87 years. Since it's now been more than a year since the market hit its bear-market bottom, the averages are certainly not in investors' favor.</p>\n<p>However, averages are nothing more than that... averages. The market doesn't adhere to averages, even if some folks base their investments off of what's happened historically.</p>\n<p>We could enter a period similar to 1991 through 1996 where there were zero corrections. Or we could continue the theme since the beginning of 2010, where corrections occur, on average, every 19 months.</p>\n<p><b>Corrections have been an historical given within three years of a bear market bottom</b></p>\n<p>Another interesting piece of evidence to examine is the frequency by which the S&amp;P 500 corrects after hitting a bear-market bottom.</p>\n<p>Since the beginning of 1960 (an arbitrary year I chose for the sake of simplicity), the widely followed index has navigated its way through nine bear markets, including the coronavirus crash. In rebounding from each of the previous eight bear market lows, there was at least one double-digit percentage decline within three years100% of the time. In aggregate, 13 corrections have occurred within three years following the last eight bear market bottoms (i.e., either one or two following each bottom).</p>\n<p>Put another way, rebounding from a bear-market bottom is rarely a straight-line move higher. Yet up, up, and away has pretty much been the theme for investors since March 23, 2020. History would suggest that there's a very good chance of a move lower in equities within the next two years.</p>\n<p><b>Crashes frequently occur when this valuation metric is hit</b></p>\n<p>But the most damning bit of evidence might just be the S&amp;P 500's Shiller price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio. This is a valuation metric that examines the average inflation-adjusted earnings from the previous 10 years. You might also know it as the cyclically adjusted P/E ratio, or CAPE.</p>\n<p>As of the close of business on March 30, the S&amp;P 500's Shiller P/E ratio hit 35.61. That's well over double its 150-year average of 16.8. Using continuous bull market moves as a parameter, it's the second-highest reading in its history.</p>\n<p>To some extent, itmakes sensethat equity valuations should be higher now than they've been historically. That's because interest rates are near an all-time low and access to the internet has effectively broken down barriers between Wall Street and Main Street that may have, in the past, kept P/E multiples at bay.</p>\n<p>However, previous instances of the S&amp;P 500's Shiller P/E ratio crossing above and sustaining the 30 levelhaven't ended well. In the prior four instances where the Shiller P/E surpassed and held above 30, the benchmark index tumbled anywhere from 20% to as much as 89%. Although an 89% plunge, which was experienced during the Great Depression, is very unlikely these days, a big drop has historically been in the cards when valuations get extended, as they are now.</p>\n<p><b>Keep that cash handy in the event that opportunity knocks</b></p>\n<p>To circle back to the original question at hand, the data is pretty clear that the likelihood of a stock market crash or correction has grown considerably. It's impossible to precisely predict when a crash might occur, how long the decline will last, or how steep the drop could be. But the data strongly suggests that downside is in the offing.</p>\n<p>While this might be a disappointing revelation to some investors, it shouldn't be. Crashes and corrections are a normal part of the investing cycle. More importantly, theyprovide an opportunityfor investors to buy into great companies at a discount. Just think about all the great companies you're probably kicking yourself over for not buying last March.</p>\n<p>The reason to be excited about crashes and corrections is also found in the data. You see, of those 38 previous corrections in the S&amp;P 500 since the beginning of 1950, each and every one has eventually been put into the rearview mirror by a bull market rally. Plus,at no point over the past centuryhave rolling 20-year total returns (including dividends) for the S&amp;P 500 been negative.</p>\n<p>If you need further encouragement to buy during a correction, keep in mind that 24 of the 38 double-digit declines in the S&amp;P 500 havefound their bottom in 104 or fewer calendar days(3.5 months or less). Crashes and corrections may be steep at times but tend to resolve quickly. Yet up, up, and away has pretty much been the theme for investors since March 23, 2020. History would suggest that there's a very good chance of a move lower in equities within the next two years.\nCrashes frequently occur when this valuation metric is hit\nBut the most damning bit of evidence might just be the S&P 500's Shiller price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio. This is a valuation metric that examines the average inflation-adjusted earnings from the previous 10 years. You might also know it as the cyclically adjusted P/E ratio, or CAPE.\nAs of the close of business on March 30, the S&P 500's Shiller P/E ratio hit 35.61. That's well over double its 150-year average of 16.8. Using continuous bull market moves as a parameter, it's the second-highest reading in its history.\nTo some extent, itmakes sensethat equity valuations should be higher now than they've been historically. That's because interest rates are near an all-time low and access to the internet has effectively broken down barriers between Wall Street and Main Street that may have, in the past, kept P/E multiples at bay.\nHowever, previous instances of the S&P 500's Shiller P/E ratio crossing above and sustaining the 30 levelhaven't ended well. In the prior four instances where the Shiller P/E surpassed and held above 30, the benchmark index tumbled anywhere from 20% to as much as 89%. Although an 89% plunge, which was experienced during the Great Depression, is very unlikely these days, a big drop has historically been in the cards when valuations get extended, as they are now.\nKeep that cash handy in the event that opportunity knocks\nTo circle back to the original question at hand, the data is pretty clear that the likelihood of a stock market crash or correction has grown considerably. It's impossible to precisely predict when a crash might occur, how long the decline will last, or how steep the drop could be. But the data strongly suggests that downside is in the offing.\nWhile this might be a disappointing revelation to some investors, it shouldn't be. Crashes and corrections are a normal part of the investing cycle. More importantly, theyprovide an opportunityfor investors to buy into great companies at a discount. Just think about all the great companies you're probably kicking yourself over for not buying last March.\nThe reason to be excited about crashes and corrections is also found in the data. You see, of those 38 previous corrections in the S&P 500 since the beginning of 1950, each and every one has eventually been put into the rearview mirror by a bull market rally. Plus,at no point over the past centuryhave rolling 20-year total returns (including dividends) for the S&P 500 been negative.\nIf you need further encouragement to buy during a correction, keep in mind that 24 of the 38 double-digit declines in the S&P 500 havefound their bottom in 104 or fewer calendar days(3.5 months or less). Crashes and corrections may be steep at times but tend to resolve quickly.
