Think of it like a self-driving car.</p>\n<p>You put in your destination, buckle up in the backseat and your driver (robo adviser) will get there. You, the passenger, can’t easily slam the breaks if you fear your driver is leading you in the wrong direction. Nor can you put your foot on the gas pedal if you’re in a rush and want to get to your destination faster.</p>\n<p>Robo-investing platforms use advanced-trading algorithm software to design investment portfolios based on factors such as an individual’s appetite for risk-taking and desired short-term and long-term returns.</p>\n<p>There are over 200 platforms that provide these services charging typically no more than a 0.5% annual advisory fee, compared to the 1% annual fee human investment advisors charge.</p>\n<p>And rather than investing entirely on your own, which can become a second job and lead to emotional investment decisions, robo advisers handle buying and selling assets.</p>\n<p>Cynthia Loh, Schwab vice president of Digital Advice and Innovation, disagrees, and argues that robo investing doesn’t mean giving technology control of your money. Schwab, she said, has a team of investment experts who oversee investment strategy and keep watch during periods of market volatility, although some services have more input from humans than others.</p>\n<p>As she recently wrote on MarketWatch: “One common misconception about automated investing is that choosing a robo adviser essentially means handing control of your money over to robots. The truth is that robo solutions have a combination of automated and human components running things behind the scenes.”</p>\n<p><b>Robos appeal to inexperienced investors</b></p>\n<p>Robo investing tends to appeal to inexperienced investors or ones who don’t have the time or energy to manage their own portfolios. These investors can take comfort in the “set it and forget it approach to investing and overtime let the markets do their thing,” Barse said.</p>\n<p>That makes it much easier to stomach market volatility knowing that you don’t necessarily have to make spur-of-the-moment decisions to buy or sell assets, said Tiffany Lam-Balfour, an investing and retirement specialist at NerdWallet.</p>\n<p>“When you’re investing, you don’t want to keep looking at the market and going ‘Oh I need to get out of this,’” she said. “You want to leave it to the professionals to get you through it because they know what your time horizon is, and they’ll adjust your portfolio automatically for you.”</p>\n<p>That said, “you can’t just expect your investments will only go up. Even if you had the world’s best human financial adviser you can’t expect that.”</p>\n<p>Others disagree, and say robo advisers appeal to older investors. “Planning for and paying yourself in retirement is complex. There are many options out there to help investors through it, and robo investing is one of them,” Loh said.</p>\n<p>“Many thoughtful, long-term investors have discovered that they want a more modern, streamlined, and inexpensive way to invest, and robo investing fits the bill. The simplistic questionnaire you’re required to fill out will on most robo-investing platforms will collect information on your annual income, desired age to retire and the level of risk you’re willing to take on.</p>\n<p>It won’t however know if you just had a child and would like to begin saving for their education down the road or if you recently lost your job.</p>\n<p>“The question then becomes to whom does that person go to for advice and does that platform offer that and if so, to what level of complexity?” said Barse.</p>\n<p>Not all platforms give individualized investment advice and the hybrid models that do offer advice from a human tend to charge higher annual fees.</p>\n<p>Additionally, a robo adviser won’t necessarily “manage your money with tax efficiency at front of mind,” said Roger Ma, a certified financial planner at Lifelaidout, a New York City-based financial advisory group.</p>\n<p>For instance, one common way investors offset the taxes they pay on long-term investments is by selling assets that have accrued losses. The pandemic was intensifying,gridlock paralyzed Washington&nbsp;and millions of families were about to&nbsp;lose crucial benefits.</p>\n<p>Fast forward two months, and the&nbsp;economy is still struggling-- but confidence in the recovery is growing, rapidly.</p>\n<p>Economists are swiftly upgrading their GDP and unemployment forecasts and pulling forward the date when the Federal Reserve will be able to lift rock-bottom interest rates. Goldman Sachs is predicting the US economy will grow at the fastest clip in more than three decades.</p>\n<p>The renewed optimism is being driven by two major factors: the&nbsp;health crisis is easing&nbsp;and Uncle Sam is&nbsp;coming to the rescue with staggering amounts of aid-- hundreds of billions more than seemed to be in the cards just months ago.</p>\n<p>After supplying $4 trillion of relief last year, Washington is expected to pump in another $2 trillion of deficit-financed support in 2021, according to Moody's Analytics. That represents more than a quarter of annual US GDP.</p>\n<p>\"That is a lot of economic juice,\" Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics, told CNN Business.</p>\n<p>The turning point happened last month&nbsp;when Democrats took narrow control of the US Senate by sweeping the runoff races in Georgia. That opened a path for&nbsp;President Joe Biden's $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, which features $1,400 stimulus checks, enhanced unemployment benefits and a $350 billion lifeline to state and local governments.</p>\n<p><b>'Summer mini-boom'</b></p>\n<p>Before the Georgia elections, Zandi didn't think the US economy would return to full employment (a strong labor market with 4% unemployment) until the spring or summer of 2023. Now, he expects that achievement to happen next spring, echoing a&nbsp;forecast by Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.</p>\n<p>\"Super-charged fiscal policy\" means the argument for the US economy growing faster than its peers \"seems to get stronger day-by-day,\" economists at Bank of America wrote in a recent report to clients.</p>\n<p>Oxford Economics chief US economist Gregory Daco is calling for a \"summer mini-boom\" in the United States and 5.9% GDP growth in 2021.</p>\n<p>Likewise, Jefferies economists say \"explosive income growth (courtesy of fiscal stimulus) is likely to propel US GDP 6.4% higher this year and nearly 5% next year.\"</p>\n<p>\"If anything, our forecast might be too conservative,\" Jefferies told clients in a recent note, pointing out that its view incorporates just $1 trillion of the Biden plan.</p>\n<p>Indeed, Goldman Sachs upgraded its 2021 GDP forecast to 6.8% earlier this week because the Wall Street bank now assumes additional fiscal relief of $1.5 trillion, up from $1.1 trillion previously. If Goldman's prediction comes true, it would be the fastest annual GDP growth for the United States since 1989,according to the St. Louis Fed.</p>\n<p>The rosy GDP forecasts are well above what the Federal Reserve is calling for. In December, the Fed expected 2021 GDP growth of just 4.2% and said unemployment wouldn't slip below 4% until 2023.</p>\n<p><b>Double-dip recession averted</b></p>\n<p>The Fed tends to be conservative with its economic forecasts. And, crucially, the Fed forecast was released at a time when political dysfunction in DC was casting a shadow over the US economy.</p>\n<p>For months, Republicans and Democrats tried and failed to reach a deal on extending crucial unemployment and eviction benefits scheduled to lapse and providing more forgivable loans to small businesses. And then when a deal was finally reached, former President Donald Trump threatened to blow it up.</p>\n<p>At the last minute, Trump signed the $900 billion relief package into law, averting economic disaster.</p>\n<p>\"Without that, we would be in a double dip recession,\" said Zandi, the Moody's economist.</p>\n<p>Slammed by the pandemic, the US economy limped to the end of 2020 and started this year slowly. In December, employers cut jobs in for the first time since the spring. And the United States&nbsp;added just 49,000 jobs in January.</p>\n<p>Jobless claims remain alarmingly high. Another 793,000 Americans filed for first time unemployment benefits last week alone. For context, that is above the worst levels of the Great Recession.</p>\n<p><b>Vaccines to the rescue</b></p>\n<p>But there are glimmers of hope on the pandemic. Although Covid deaths remain unthinkably high, hospitalizations and cases have retreated.</p>\n<p>Critically, the rollout of coronavirus vaccines is accelerating. Out of a total of 66 million vaccines distributed, about 70% have been administered, according to Morgan Stanley.</p>\n<p>And Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert,told NBC News Thursday&nbsp;that the United States may be able to vaccinate most Americans by the middle or end of summer.</p>\n<p>All of this has allowed states including California, New York and New Jersey to relax health restrictions crushing restaurants and other small businesses.</p>\n<p>That's not to say the pandemic is over. In fact,one risk is that new Covid-19 variants&nbsp;force US states and cities to once again tighten health restrictions.</p>\n<p><b>Low-wage workers are still hurting badly</b></p>\n<p>Against this backdrop, many economists are urging Washington to push ahead with plans for aggressive fiscal stimulus.</p>\n<p>\"Foot flat on the accelerator, please,\" Zandi, the Moody's economist said. \"Policymaking 101 says err on the side of doing too much, rather than too little.\"</p>\n<p>Doing too little risks worsening America's inequality problem. That's because this recession, more than prior ones, disproportionately hurt low-income workers in hard-hit sectors such as restaurants, childcare and hospitality.</p>\n<p>Employment levels of low-wage workers (those making less than $27,000 per year) is still down more than 20%, according to the Opportunity Insights Economic tracker. By contrast, employment levels of those making more than $60,000 per year are above pre-crisis levels.</p>\n<p>\"Biden's team is unlikely to break out the champagne over reaching full employment if it isn't evident across income and racial groups,\" economists at Bank of America wrote in a report to clients.</p>\n<p>However, Danielle DiMartino Booth, a former Fed official who is now CEO of Quill Intelligence, worries the focus on providing income, instead of investing in infrastructure and reskilling workers, will make the country addicted to stimulus.</p>\n<p>\"The economy is going to turn into this dependent patient, always waiting for the next injection,\" Booth said.</p>\n<p><b>'Bring it on'</b></p>\n<p>Some economists, including former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, have warned there is a risk that Washington&nbsp;overheats the economy by injecting too much support.</p>\n<p>\"You could have quite the inflation scare in the next few months that will test the bond market and the Fed,\" Booth said.</p>\n<p>And that in turn would spook the&nbsp;red-hot stock market.</p>\n<p>Fed watchers are moving up their timelines for when the central bank will be able to end its emergency policies.</p>\n<p>Citing \"signs of a firmer inflation outlook,\" Goldman Sachs now expects the Fed to start \"tapering\" its asset purchases in early 2022 and to raise interest rates in the first half of 2024.</p>\n<p>Zandi isn't losing sleep over inflation, mostly because the United States is far from full employment.</p>\n<p>\"It's a vastly overstated worry,\" he said. \"Bring it on. Our biggest problem for more than a decade has been low inflation. Goldman Sachs is predicting the US economy will grow at the fastest clip in more than three decades.\nThe renewed optimism is being driven by two major factors: the health crisis is easing and Uncle Sam is coming to the rescue with staggering amounts of aid-- hundreds of billions more than seemed to be in the cards just months ago.\nAfter supplying $4 trillion of relief last year, Washington is expected to pump in another $2 trillion of deficit-financed support in 2021, according to Moody's Analytics. That represents more than a quarter of annual US GDP.\n\"That is a lot of economic juice,\" Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics, told CNN Business.\nThe turning point happened last month when Democrats took narrow control of the US Senate by sweeping the runoff races in Georgia. That opened a path for President Joe Biden's $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, which features $1,400 stimulus checks, enhanced unemployment benefits and a $350 billion lifeline to state and local governments.\n'Summer mini-boom'\nBefore the Georgia elections, Zandi didn't think the US economy would return to full employment (a strong labor market with 4% unemployment) until the spring or summer of 2023. Now, he expects that achievement to happen next spring, echoing a forecast by Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.\n\"Super-charged fiscal policy\" means the argument for the US economy growing faster than its peers \"seems to get stronger day-by-day,\" economists at Bank of America wrote in a recent report to clients.\nOxford Economics chief US economist Gregory Daco is calling for a \"summer mini-boom\" in the United States and 5.9% GDP growth in 2021.\nLikewise, Jefferies economists say \"explosive income growth (courtesy of fiscal stimulus) is likely to propel US GDP 6.4% higher this year and nearly 5% next year.\"\n\"If anything, our forecast might be too conservative,\" Jefferies told clients in a recent note, pointing out that its view incorporates just $1 trillion of the Biden plan.\nIndeed, Goldman Sachs upgraded its 2021 GDP forecast to 6.8% earlier this week because the Wall Street bank now assumes additional fiscal relief of $1.5 trillion, up from $1.1 trillion previously. If Goldman's prediction comes true, it would be the fastest annual GDP growth for the United States since 1989,according to the St. Louis Fed.\nThe rosy GDP forecasts are well above what the Federal Reserve is calling for. In December, the Fed expected 2021 GDP growth of just 4.2% and said unemployment wouldn't slip below 4% until 2023.\nDouble-dip recession averted\nThe Fed tends to be conservative with its economic forecasts. And, crucially, the Fed forecast was released at a time when political dysfunction in DC was casting a shadow over the US economy.\nFor months, Republicans and Democrats tried and failed to reach a deal on extending crucial unemployment and eviction benefits scheduled to lapse and providing more forgivable loans to small businesses. And then when a deal was finally reached, former President Donald Trump threatened to blow it up.\nAt the last minute, Trump signed the $900 billion relief package into law, averting economic disaster.\n\"Without that, we would be in a double dip recession,\" said Zandi, the Moody's economist.\nSlammed by the pandemic, the US economy limped to the end of 2020 and started this year slowly. In December, employers cut jobs in for the first time since the spring. And the United States added just 49,000 jobs in January.\nJobless claims remain alarmingly high. Another 793,000 Americans filed for first time unemployment benefits last week alone. For context, that is above the worst levels of the Great Recession.\nVaccines to the rescue\nBut there are glimmers of hope on the pandemic. Although Covid deaths remain unthinkably high, hospitalizations and cases have retreated.\nCritically, the rollout of coronavirus vaccines is accelerating. Out of a total of 66 million vaccines distributed, about 70% have been administered, according to Morgan Stanley.\nAnd Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert,told NBC News Thursday that the United States may be able to vaccinate most Americans by the middle or end of summer.\nAll of this has allowed states including California, New York and New Jersey to relax health restrictions crushing restaurants and other small businesses.\nThat's not to say the pandemic is over. In fact,one risk is that new Covid-19 variants force US states and cities to once again tighten health restrictions.\nLow-wage workers are still hurting badly\nAgainst this backdrop, many economists are urging Washington to push ahead with plans for aggressive fiscal stimulus.\n\"Foot flat on the accelerator, please,\" Zandi, the Moody's economist said. \"Policymaking 101 says err on the side of doing too much, rather than too little.\"\nDoing too little risks worsening America's inequality problem. That's because this recession, more than prior ones, disproportionately hurt low-income workers in hard-hit sectors such as restaurants, childcare and hospitality.\nEmployment levels of low-wage workers (those making less than $27,000 per year) is still down more than 20%, according to the Opportunity Insights Economic tracker. By contrast, employment levels of those making more than $60,000 per year are above pre-crisis levels.\n\"Biden's team is unlikely to break out the champagne over reaching full employment if it isn't evident across income and racial groups,\" economists at Bank of America wrote in a report to clients.\nHowever, Danielle DiMartino Booth, a former Fed official who is now CEO of Quill Intelligence, worries the focus on providing income, instead of investing in infrastructure and reskilling workers, will make the country addicted to stimulus.\n\"The economy is going to turn into this dependent patient, always waiting for the next injection,\" Booth said.\n'Bring it on'\nSome economists, including former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, have warned there is a risk that Washington overheats the economy by injecting too much support.\n\"You could have quite the inflation scare in the next few months that will test the bond market and the Fed,\" Booth said.\nAnd that in turn would spook the red-hot stock market.\nFed watchers are moving up their timelines for when the central bank will be able to end its emergency policies.\nCiting \"signs of a firmer inflation outlook,\" Goldman Sachs now expects the Fed to start \"tapering\" its asset purchases in early 2022 and to raise interest rates in the first half of 2024.\nZandi isn't losing sleep over inflation, mostly because the United States is far from full employment.\n\"It's a vastly overstated worry,\" he said. \"Bring it on. Our biggest problem for more than a decade has been low inflation. region’s poor residents suffer brunt of COVID-19 pandemic</p>\n<p>Despite reports of an exodus, Silicon Valley remains the tech capital of the world, with new data showing continued record investment in the industry in 2020 and no overall declines in jobs and population in the region.</p>\n<p>While the high-profile departures of&nbsp;rich executives and investors like Elon Musk&nbsp;and&nbsp;companies like Oracle Corp.&nbsp;and&nbsp;Hewlett Packard Enterprise Corp.&nbsp;have raised questions about the future of California’s tech powerhouse, an annual report out this week found little evidence of a trend. Instead, the major effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the San Francisco Bay Area in 2020 was the widening of the divide between the haves and have-nots, thanks to all the money still flowing into just a few pockets as the coronavirus ravages poorer communities.</p>\n<p>“Today, we must frankly admit that the pandemic has made the rich richer while the poor are dying,” said Russell Hancock, chief executive of Joint Venture Silicon Valley, which published its annual Silicon Valley Index this week detailing what happened in the region last year.</p>\n<p>The report showed record venture capital investment in Bay Area startups, along with booming market capitalizations for public tech companies and standard-setting initial public offerings. Amid fears of a tech-worker stampede out of the Golden State as companies allowed remote work, the population in Silicon Valley — defined as Santa Clara and San Mateo counties — was mostly flat for the year, rising 0.02%.</p>\n<p>While an overall out-migration was tracked in San Francisco, the vast majority of those who left the most prominent city in the region last year&nbsp;remained in the state, according to U.S. Postal Service data crunched by the San Francisco Chronicle this week. That’s in line with what the Silicon Valley Index shows: 59% of the people who have left the valley in the past few years have stayed in California, moving up or down the state.</p>\n<p>“I think we can all calm down,” said Rachel Massaro, Joint Venture’s director of research, during a news briefing about the index. “We’re a place of innovation. We’re a place that houses these impactful companies. We have not seen any significant losses among them.”</p>\n<p>In short, the region’s biggest companies and highest-paid people fared drastically better and in many cases thrived — white-collar workers, who earn more than three times as those in service occupations, got to work remotely and protect themselves from a deadly virus — while low-wage workers lost jobs and fell ill, their lack of a safety net shining a harsher light on inequality.</p>\n<p>“It’s a tale of two economies,” Hancock said. “There are two stories.”</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4e74e27c802a7abc5e4f17381a9dc9f7\" tg-width=\"620\" tg-height=\"343\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><b>The tech story</b></p>\n<p>Silicon Valley and San Francisco companies’ market capitalization climbed 37% to $10.5 trillion last year, according to the report, thanks to huge spikes from companies such as Tesla Inc.TSLA,-0.77%,which saw its market cap skyrocket more than 700% in 2020; Apple Inc.AAPL,+0.12%,which saw a 77% increase, while Facebook Inc.FB,-2.91%grew 30% and GoogleGOOGL,-0.81%experienced a 28% boost.</p>\n<p>Big Tech kept getting bigger in other ways as well. The top 15 tech employers in the area — which includes the above plus other large companies like Intel Corp.INTC,+2.27%,Salesforce Inc.CRM,-0.18%and Cisco Systems Inc.CSCO,-1.42%— ended the year with a 3.7% increase in jobs even while the region saw a couple hundred thousand jobs disappear overall. And despite nagging questions about the effects of a work-from-home shift on commercial real estate, the largest companies in the region continued construction on existing projects, such as Google’s planned massive development in San Jose, Calif.</p>\n<p>The next generation also received record investment totals. Snowflake Inc.SNOW,+0.08%,DoorDash Inc.and Airbnb Inc.,all based in the Bay Area, were the three biggest U.S. initial public offerings of 2020, not including special-purpose acquisition companies. And even in a booming year for IPOs, Silicon Valley outperformed the rest: 2020 IPOs from the valley grew 117% and S.F. issuances grew 101%, while IPOs in general returned 80% last year, according to the Silicon Valley Index.</p>\n<p>It was also a record year for venture capital, with funding to Silicon Valley and San Francisco companies increasing 8% from 2019, the report said. Of the $123.6 billion in U.S. VC funding in 2020, $26.4 billion went to Silicon Valley, $20 billion to San Francisco and $67 billion to California. A lot of that investment went into well-known startups including Bay Area decacorns (private companies worth at least $10 billion) like Stripe, Instacart and Robinhood.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/aecd2f4f6588dc206cb09b59ebe10136\" tg-width=\"620\" tg-height=\"502\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p><b>The other, less positive story</b></p>\n<p>While Big Tech flourished and money continued to pour into potential additions to that group, the gap between those flourishing from that performance and Silicon Valley’s poorer residents is wider than ever, the index shows.</p>\n<p>As of last Friday, 2,069 people in the region had died of COVID-19, Hancock said. Death rates were highest among Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders, Black/African Americans and Hispanic or Latinos, respectively. A report by the&nbsp;Mercury News&nbsp;showed that death rates were far higher in poorer neighborhoods than wealthier ones, such as in the largely Latino neighborhoods of East San Jose.</p>\n<p>Lower-wage workers lost their jobs or had to put their health at risk to hang onto their positions.</p>\n<p>“The pandemic wiped out our service sector and in-person economy,” Hancock said. “There’s real carnage out there. People have lost their livelihoods.”</p>\n<p>The region’s community infrastructure and service jobs declined 54% by midyear 2020. Hispanic people were 1.5 times more likely to file unemployment claims as white people, Hancock said. And in December, more than 626,000 households in the Bay Area, including nearly 200,000 households in Silicon Valley, were at risk of eviction or mortgage nonpayment, according to the index.</p>\n<p>Shuttle drivers who drove tech employees to various offices around the Bay Area for companies such as Salesforce Inc.,Twitter Inc.&nbsp;and others — which have told their employees they can work remotely permanently or most of the time — have been laid off or furloughed, said Stacy Murphy, business representative for Teamsters Local 853, which represents about 800 shuttle drivers in the Bay Area. Some drivers are still on paid furlough, but others are no longer receiving wages and most have no idea when they can return to work.</p>\n<p>“We are all patiently waiting,” said Murphy, who has said the union is in constant discussions and is advocating for the drivers to keep getting paid.</p>\n<p><b>The murky future</b></p>\n<p>Some data from the index shows that concerns about a threat to the region’s reign as a tech center are not unfounded. Although Silicon Valley’s population did not decline in 2020, a yearslong out-migration trend did continue. Instead, the major effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the San Francisco Bay Area in 2020 was the widening of the divide between the haves and have-nots, thanks to all the money still flowing into just a few pockets as the coronavirus ravages poorer communities.\n“Today, we must frankly admit that the pandemic has made the rich richer while the poor are dying,” said Russell Hancock, chief executive of Joint Venture Silicon Valley, which published its annual Silicon Valley Index this week detailing what happened in the region last year.\nThe report showed record venture capital investment in Bay Area startups, along with booming market capitalizations for public tech companies and standard-setting initial public offerings. Amid fears of a tech-worker stampede out of the Golden State as companies allowed remote work, the population in Silicon Valley — defined as Santa Clara and San Mateo counties — was mostly flat for the year, rising 0.02%.\nWhile an overall out-migration was tracked in San Francisco, the vast majority of those who left the most prominent city in the region last year remained in the state, according to U.S. Postal Service data crunched by the San Francisco Chronicle this week. That’s in line with what the Silicon Valley Index shows: 59% of the people who have left the valley in the past few years have stayed in California, moving up or down the state.\n“I think we can all calm down,” said Rachel Massaro, Joint Venture’s director of research, during a news briefing about the index. “We’re a place of innovation. We’re a place that houses these impactful companies. We have not seen any significant losses among them.”\nIn short, the region’s biggest companies and highest-paid people fared drastically better and in many cases thrived — white-collar workers, who earn more than three times as those in service occupations, got to work remotely and protect themselves from a deadly virus — while low-wage workers lost jobs and fell ill, their lack of a safety net shining a harsher light on inequality.\n“It’s a tale of two economies,” Hancock said. “There are two stories.”\nThe tech story\nSilicon Valley and San Francisco companies’ market capitalization climbed 37% to $10.5 trillion last year, according to the report, thanks to huge spikes from companies such as Tesla Inc.TSLA,-0.77%,which saw its market cap skyrocket more than 700% in 2020; Apple Inc.AAPL,+0.12%,which saw a 77% increase, while Facebook Inc.FB,-2.91%grew 30% and GoogleGOOGL,-0.81%experienced a 28% boost.\nBig Tech kept getting bigger in other ways as well. Snowflake Inc.SNOW,+0.08%,DoorDash Inc.and Airbnb Inc.,all based in the Bay Area, were the three biggest U.S. initial public offerings of 2020, not including special-purpose acquisition companies. And even in a booming year for IPOs, Silicon Valley outperformed the rest: 2020 IPOs from the valley grew 117% and S.F. issuances grew 101%, while IPOs in general returned 80% last year, according to the Silicon Valley Index.\nIt was also a record year for venture capital, with funding to Silicon Valley and San Francisco companies increasing 8% from 2019, the report said. Of the $123.6 billion in U.S. VC funding in 2020, $26.4 billion went to Silicon Valley, $20 billion to San Francisco and $67 billion to California. A lot of that investment went into well-known startups including Bay Area decacorns (private companies worth at least $10 billion) like Stripe, Instacart and Robinhood.\n\nThe other, less positive story\nWhile Big Tech flourished and money continued to pour into potential additions to that group, the gap between those flourishing from that performance and Silicon Valley’s poorer residents is wider than ever, the index shows.\nAs of last Friday, 2,069 people in the region had died of COVID-19, Hancock said. Death rates were highest among Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders, Black/African Americans and Hispanic or Latinos, respectively. A report by the Mercury News showed that death rates were far higher in poorer neighborhoods than wealthier ones, such as in the largely Latino neighborhoods of East San Jose.\nLower-wage workers lost their jobs or had to put their health at risk to hang onto their positions.\n“The pandemic wiped out our service sector and in-person economy,” Hancock said. “There’s real carnage out there. Luckily for investors, the EV market is far from a zero-sum game and newcomers continue to enter the space. Chinese EV maker NIO is a rising star in the booming market, as its sales continue to grow. The company is also focused on autonomous driving tech, as well as batteries, which are the lifeblood of the industry.</p><p>NIO sells multiple models that are somewhat in-line with Tesla, from smaller SUVs to sedans. The company said in early January that it delivered 17,353 vehicles in the fourth quarter, which marked a 110% jump.</p><p>Overall, NIO’s full-year deliveries surged 113% to nearly 44,000 vehicles in 2020. And its January 2021 figures were even more impressive, with deliveries up 350% from the year-ago period to push its overall cumulative deliveries to 83K.</p><p>With this in mind, Zacks estimates call for NIO’s FY20 revenue to jump 120% to $2.49 billion, with FY21 projected to come in another 97% higher to reach $4.89 billion. The Chinese EV company is also expected to significantly shrink its adjusted losses during this stretch.</p><p>NIO has topped our EPS estimates in the trailing two periods and its positive earnings revisions help it land a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy) heading into the release of its Q4 results on March 1.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5b6233d1784a5cb7db62b437f7632a3f\" tg-width=\"620\" tg-height=\"314\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p>NIO, which rocks an “A” grade for Growth in our Style Scores system, has seen its stock skyrocket over 1,000% in the last year and 300% in the past six months. Luckily for investors who missed the ride, NIO has cooled down, up only 12% in the last three months.</p><p>At roughly $55 per share, it’s down about 13% from its late January records. The recent downturn has seen it fall from overbought in terms of the Relative Strength Index to around 45—an RSI above 70 is often regarded as overbought, with any number below 30 considered oversold.</p><p>NIO’s recent price performance could give it room to run if it’s able to impress Wall Street. And the stock jumped over 1% through morning trading Friday, as it bounces off its 50-day moving average. NIO shares also trade at a discount compared to other high-flyers at 12.7X forward sales, which marks a discount against Tesla’s 15.5X and comes in 25% below its own six-months highs.</p><p>Three out of the nine brokerage recommendations that Zacks has for NIO come in at a “Strong Buy,” with none below a “Hold.” NIO might be worth buying as a long-term play that’s far less expensive than Tesla ($784 a share), in a world where EVs already accounted for over 30% of Volvo’s new car sales in Europe in 2020. This is crucial in the cloud age that’s full of rapidly expanding endpoints, which include laptops, desktops, smartphones, IoT devices, and more.</p><p>Remote work and schooling pushed this area of the ever-growing cybersecurity space to the forefront, but it was already booming. More importantly, as devices proliferate and our digitally-connected world grows more complex, it becomes more vulnerable.</p><p>CrowdStrike on February announced plans to bolster its offerings through the acquisition of Humio for $400 million—expected to close in the first quarter. More recently, the stock is up 65% in the last six months, and it already bounced back to new records—which it hit earlier in the week—after it slipped in mid-January.</p><p>The stock is firmly a growth play at the moment, trading at 42.7X forward sales, which puts it right in line with e-commerce giant ShopifySHOP. Despite its run, the stock is not currently considered overbought, with an RSI of 64.</p><p>CRWD’s positive earnings revisions help it grab a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy) at the moment, with it set to release its fourth quarter fiscal 2021 results on March 16. Meanwhile, 14 of the 19 brokerage ratings Zacks has for CRWD come in at a “Strong Buy,” with none lower than a “Hold.”</p><p>Looking back, the company crushed our Q3 estimates in December, with sales up 86%. CrowdStrike also lifted its guidance at the time. The company plans to let consumers use the currency to pay for cars.</p><p>But Tesla isn’t the only one. On Thursday, BNY Mellon (BK), the oldest bank in the U.S.,said it will hold and transfer cryptocurrencies for customers. “Growing client demand for digital assets, maturity of advanced solutions, and improving regulatory clarity present a tremendous opportunity for us to extend our current service offerings to this emerging field,” said Roman Regelman, the bank’s CEO of asset servicing and head of digital.</p><p>Mastercard (MA) said on Wednesday that it will let merchants accept some cryptocurrencies through its network later this year. The payments will be converted to traditional money before it enters the companies’ systems.Twitter(TWTR) is also considering a Bitcoin investment. And Square (SQ) has already put some on its balance sheet, as well as given users of its Cash App access to buy the cryptocurrency.</p><p>Why is this happening now? Cryptocurrencies are still not particularly useful outside of a very few cases, such as cross-border transactions. Even there, they haven’t fully taken hold.</p><p>There are at least four big reasons corporations are diving in.</p><p>One is that some company founders believe in Bitcoin. Their excitement about the asset has convinced them that their companies need to be involved, or have cryptocurrency investments, even if Bitcoin isn’t really the core of their operations. That appears to be the case for Tesla and its CEO Elon Musk, and for a software company calledMicrostrategyand its CEO, Michael Saylor.</p><p>Microstrategy, whose entire market capitalization was below $1 billion early last year, now owns more than $2 billion of Bitcoin, and its market cap is now just under $10 billion. Saylor told<i>Barron’s</i>&nbsp;in an interview last yearthat he sees Bitcoin as a hedge against monetary debasement and inflation.</p><p>Square CEO Jack Dorsey ‘s fascination with Bitcoin also likely sped Square’s adoption. He has spoken about his interest in the currency for years.</p><p>Tesla’s purchase of Bitcoin is strong marketing for the company and the currency, said Dan Morehead, founder of the crypto hedge fund Pantera Capital. But it won’t likely change the way Bitcoin is used. “Tesla sells a half a million cars a year,” he said. “If they sold 4% in Bitcoin, I’d be surprised.” Morehead thinks Bitoin’s growing use for cross-border payments is much more exciting from a practical perspective.</p><p>Other companies are getting into Bitcoin because of customer demand. That appears to be the case for BNY Mellon, which is not known for making risky bets on new technologies. It could stay out of the industry altogether, but more institutional investors are buying Bitcoin and need somewhere to put it.</p><p>And the infrastructure around Bitcoin has grown, so that it now more closely resembles the systems used in the rest of the world of finance.. Big companies now insure cryptocurrencies or—as in the case ofJPMorgan Chase(JPM)—offer services to cryptocurrency businesses, even if most still don’t hold Bitcoin on their own balance sheets.</p><p>A third reason is increasing government acceptance of the trend. BNY cited greater regulatory clarity around Bitcoin as one reason it is diving in. The U.S. government has taken a mostly laissez-faire approach to regulating digital assets even as many of the illegal activities that cryptocurrency has been associated with in the past have continued. Without at least the tacit approval of regulators, crypto couldn’t have landed on the balance sheets of so many companies.</p><p>A fourth reason cryptocurrencies are gaining hold in corporate boardrooms is that they serve multiple purposes. That gives corporations several different rationales to hold the coins, or offer related services. Cryptocurrencies have the potential to go well beyond Bitcoin’s initial premise as a way to send money without financial intermediaries. So-called stablecoins, whose value is meant to track fiat currencies, could allow for faster transactions for some kinds of financial services, for instance.</p><p>Visa(V) andMasterCardseem like the last places in the world that Bitcoin would take hold given that Bitcoin was created to eliminate the middlemen in finance. Few companies fill the role of middleman as perfectly as the credit-card processors. Visa, however, thinks that cryptocurrencies are useful for many other purposes, and its trusted brand makes it an important player, according to Cuy Sheffield, head of crypto at the company.</p><p>“We’ve seen growing demand from clients across the world that want to be able to plug in and use these networks, but they want a global, neutral, trusted brand, to help them be able to do that,” Sheffield said in an interview.
