He finds that theS&amp;P 500index had a negative return averaging 0.03% in August, September, and October—the worst three-month span of the year for the big-cap benchmark. In fact, they constitute the only three-month period that averages in the red.</p>\n<p>August actually is bracketed by the best and worst months of the year, he adds in a research note. July averages a 1.58% return on the S&amp;P 500, with positive results 59.1% of the time, while September averages a negative 1.03%, ending in the plus column less than half of the time, or 45%.</p>\n<p>This July did even better than the norm, with the S&amp;P 500 gaining 2.27%. It also was the sixth consecutive up month for the index—the longest positive streak since September 2018, according to Dow Jones’ statistical mavens. During that period, its cumulative advance was 18.34%.</p>\n<p>August’s record is in between, with an average 0.70% S&amp;P 500 return and positive results 58.1% of the time, marking a transition from the “summer rip” to the “fall dip.”</p>\n<p>Not surprisingly, the laggard returns of the August-October period are accompanied by an uptick in volatility, Suttmeier finds. Based on records going back to 1992, theCboe Volatility Index,or VIX, has often seen spikes during those months, following relatively subdued volatility in the April-July period.</p>\n<p>Past isn’t necessarily prologue, but if it is, the timing of the initial public offering byRobinhood Markets(ticker: HOOD) might prove propitious, if the stock market does have its typical seasonal rough patch. The online broker, whose putative mission is to open investing to novices supposedly ignored by established outfits, sold 55 million shares at $38 on Thursday. In the process, it provided a valuable lesson to all those who got in on the IPO: Buy low and sell high.</p>\n<p>The company evidently fulfilled the latter imperative, selling its shares high, even though they were priced at the low end of the expected $38-$42 range. Their price sank 8.4% on their first day of trading, although they recouped a bit on Friday. By week’s end, buyers of Robinhood’s IPO who held were down 7.5%.</p>\n<p>Among those who sold high were the company’s co-founders, CEO Vladimir Tenev and Chief Creative Officer Baiju Bhatt, who each offloaded 1.25 million shares in the IPO. As my illustrious predecessor, Alan Abelson, liked to observe, there are many good reasons to sell a stock, but expecting it to go up isn’t one of them. That has never been more true, given the ability of rich owners to monetize their assets by borrowing against them cheaply, and without incurring capital-gains taxes.</p>\n<p>To be sure, Tenev and Bhatt still have significant stakes in Robinhood. Asour colleague Avi Salzman reported, these were worth $2.5 billion at the initial offering price, and Tenev and Bhatt retain voting control. The two also could receive awards of shares worth as much as $6.7 billion for Tenev and $4 billion for Bhatt, if the stock hits $300, or nearly the proverbial ten-bagger from here.</p>\n<p>But in a blow against income inequality, the potential billionaire pair took symbolic pay cuts, to $34,248, the average annual wage of American workers. As the comedian Yakov Smirnoff likes to say, “What a country!”</p>\n<p>How those workers are faring will be a subject of the monthly employment report slated for release this coming Friday.</p>\n<p>Economists’ forecasts for nonfarm payrolls center around a gain of 900,000. Jefferies economists Aneta Markowska and Thomas Simons estimate that the increase could top the long-anticipated one million mark; they forecast 1.2 million.</p>\n<p>Markowska and Simons think the expiration of supplemental unemployment benefits in some states will boost the labor supply, although that is a matter of significant debate. No need to remind anyone back then of droughts, wildfires, or Covid-19 surges that are unfortunate features of the steamy season this year.\nBut the coming of August also means entering what historically has been the most treacherous stretch of the year for stocks, according to data going back to 1928 compiled by Bank of America analyst Stephen Suttmeier. He finds that theS&P 500index had a negative return averaging 0.03% in August, September, and October—the worst three-month span of the year for the big-cap benchmark. In fact, they constitute the only three-month period that averages in the red.\nAugust actually is bracketed by the best and worst months of the year, he adds in a research note. July averages a 1.58% return on the S&P 500, with positive results 59.1% of the time, while September averages a negative 1.03%, ending in the plus column less than half of the time, or 45%.\nThis July did even better than the norm, with the S&P 500 gaining 2.27%. It also was the sixth consecutive up month for the index—the longest positive streak since September 2018, according to Dow Jones’ statistical mavens. During that period, its cumulative advance was 18.34%.\nAugust’s record is in between, with an average 0.70% S&P 500 return and positive results 58.1% of the time, marking a transition from the “summer rip” to the “fall dip.”\nNot surprisingly, the laggard returns of the August-October period are accompanied by an uptick in volatility, Suttmeier finds. Based on records going back to 1992, theCboe Volatility Index,or VIX, has often seen spikes during those months, following relatively subdued volatility in the April-July period.\nPast isn’t necessarily prologue, but if it is, the timing of the initial public offering byRobinhood Markets(ticker: HOOD) might prove propitious, if the stock market does have its typical seasonal rough patch. The online broker, whose putative mission is to open investing to novices supposedly ignored by established outfits, sold 55 million shares at $38 on Thursday. In the process, it provided a valuable lesson to all those who got in on the IPO: Buy low and sell high.\nThe company evidently fulfilled the latter imperative, selling its shares high, even though they were priced at the low end of the expected $38-$42 range. Perhaps you went to see a movie in theaters, and it didn't live up to the hype of the trailers or your friends rave reviews. Or, perhaps the Michelin Star restaurant was not nearly as good as you thought it would be.</p>\n<p>When we have high expectations, and those expectations are not reached, it leads to discouragement and disillusionment.</p>\n<p>Having proper expectations can allow us to enjoy more in life. It can also enable us to see the path we are walking more clearly. Little in life is as amazing or horrible as others describe.</p>\n<p>When it comes to investing and saving for retirement, we need to have proper expectations. Otherwise, we may get disillusioned and lost along the way. False expectations or beliefs regarding investing hold us back from succeeding. False expectations can cause us to be overconfident in some investments, or to pass up on great opportunities.</p>\n<p>There are numerous myths that many simply accept without question. These myths could be costing you money! So let's hit head-on two myths that continue to circulate in investing and retirement circles!</p>\n<p><b>Just Buy Dividend Aristocrats!</b></p>\n<p>I hear this a lot, especially in dividend investment circles. Many are looking for a low-effort low-risk approach to getting income from the market. Dividend Aristocrats have extremely long histories of raising their dividends, through all sorts of market conditions.</p>\n<p>Yet just because a yield is low, or has a strong history of being raised, does not mean it will survive long term. Through the Great Financial Crisis, starting in 2008, 36% of all Dividend Aristocrats were removed from the list within two years. Within five years, about 50% ended up being removed from the list. This was due to cutting, suspending, or not raising their dividend. That's a lot of pain for investors focused solely on investing in this \"safe haven.\"</p>\n<p>This myth is founded on the incorrect belief that low yields that are growing are inherently less risky. Time and again, this belief has fallen flat in the face of reality. 50% of Dividend Aristocrats lost their 25-year streaks of dividend raises. For a Dividend Aristocrat, where many investors buy primarily because of their flawless history, a cut or even just the lack of a raise can have an outsized impact.</p>\n<p>The reality is that at times, great companies will cut their dividend to ensure long-term benefit for shareholders. Income investors might hate dividend cuts, but sometimes a cut is what is best for the future of the company. Dividend Aristocrats are not immune from that reality. Yet you will pay a huge premium for most aristocrats, when you can invest in a company that might have cut one, but will still grow its dividend over time.</p>\n<p>Take Global Partners LP (GLP), which sports a 9% yield, as an example. When COVID-19 hit, management cut the distribution to protect the company and benefit unitholders in the long term. Since then, GLP has rapidly raised its distribution to levels above what was paid pre-COVID.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/eb2de5e63c647b292429f7aa2964c02d\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"371\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Data byYCharts</span></p>\n<p>One should never blindly trust a company's dividend raising streak or its low yield as the sole safety indicators. GLP had a high yield before COVID, and did have to cut the dividend during the crisis. However, its strong business model allowed it to recover quickly and a year later the dividend is higher than ever.</p>\n<p>This myth causes many investors or retirees to hold low yield, low growth names with long track records of raises, all while missing out on vastly higher income levels.</p>\n<p>Cuts happen for various reasons, especially during periods of economic turmoil like the Great Financial Crisis or COVID. You can protect yourself by having a higher degree of diversification in your portfolio and avoid panic if a company you hold takes proactive measures to benefit you long term!</p>\n<p><b>SWAN Stocks Don't Need Attention</b></p>\n<p>The moniker SWAN, standing for Sleep Well At Night, is highly misleading. It seems everything under the sun gets described as a SWAN, or SUPER SWAN, or MEGA AWESOME ONCE A DECADE SWAN! Yet investors, especially those who just survived 2020's volatility, know that even so-called SWAN stocks require monitoring.</p>\n<p>The High Dividend Opportunities Model Portfolio is actively managed. We adjust our portfolio for risks on the horizon. No single stock is immune to every market condition or economic/political risk. The illusion that the stock is a SWAN because a trusted advisor or internet guru told you so leads many to losses from being too hands-off with their portfolio.</p>\n<p>Some of the most famous melt-downs were stocks that were once considered \"SWANs\" like Enron, WorldCom, GE, and others. The \"SWANs\" today are not the same as SWANs were 30 years ago.</p>\n<p>Retirees need a low-maintenance portfolio, but that does not mean you can be asleep at the wheel!</p>\n<p>Half of the battle when it comes to investing is keeping an eye on the horizon—watching market movements, geopolitical actions, and government plans. These waves are called rogue waves, often twice the size of normal storm waves and often moving in a direction different from the prevailing winds. These rogue waves have the ability to capsize strong, able vessels if they catch them off-guard.</p>\n<p>We must have protections to watch for rogue waves when the storms of life and the market rise. We cannot simply believe our SWANs will keep us safe in all conditions.</p>\n<p>Shedding these incorrect expectations, you can approach the market with the right mindset. By slaying these myths, you can ensure you are ready to craft and maintain your retirement portfolio.</p>\n<p>We must move beyond the desire to be lazy and simply buy from a specific dividend payer list. These payers may have outstanding payment histories, but this does not guarantee future success.</p>\n<p>Furthermore, we must remain active in our portfolio, or at the very least to keep an eye to safeguard it. Stocks that are \"SWANs\" today will always be at risk of not being a \"SWAN\" tomorrow.</p>\n<p>Worse, restricting ourselves to lists like this removes a vast array of excellent income-producing opportunities that do not trade at such large premiums.</p>\n<p>Retirement is supposed to the capstone to our lifetimes. A time we spend in ease and relaxation. We have toiled hard and worked diligently to earn the last years of our life in leisure and enjoyment. The last thing we want is to derail our progress towards this goal with faulty thinking and misplaced expectations.</p>\n<p>You can slay these myths and unlock more value from your portfolio than ever before! Or, perhaps the Michelin Star restaurant was not nearly as good as you thought it would be.\nWhen we have high expectations, and those expectations are not reached, it leads to discouragement and disillusionment.\nHaving proper expectations can allow us to enjoy more in life. It can also enable us to see the path we are walking more clearly. Little in life is as amazing or horrible as others describe.\nWhen it comes to investing and saving for retirement, we need to have proper expectations. Otherwise, we may get disillusioned and lost along the way. False expectations or beliefs regarding investing hold us back from succeeding. False expectations can cause us to be overconfident in some investments, or to pass up on great opportunities.\nThere are numerous myths that many simply accept without question. These myths could be costing you money! So let's hit head-on two myths that continue to circulate in investing and retirement circles!\nJust Buy Dividend Aristocrats!\nI hear this a lot, especially in dividend investment circles. Many are looking for a low-effort low-risk approach to getting income from the market. Dividend Aristocrats have extremely long histories of raising their dividends, through all sorts of market conditions.\nYet just because a yield is low, or has a strong history of being raised, does not mean it will survive long term. Through the Great Financial Crisis, starting in 2008, 36% of all Dividend Aristocrats were removed from the list within two years. Within five years, about 50% ended up being removed from the list. This was due to cutting, suspending, or not raising their dividend. That's a lot of pain for investors focused solely on investing in this \"safe haven.\"\nThis myth is founded on the incorrect belief that low yields that are growing are inherently less risky. Time and again, this belief has fallen flat in the face of reality. 50% of Dividend Aristocrats lost their 25-year streaks of dividend raises. For a Dividend Aristocrat, where many investors buy primarily because of their flawless history, a cut or even just the lack of a raise can have an outsized impact.\nThe reality is that at times, great companies will cut their dividend to ensure long-term benefit for shareholders. Income investors might hate dividend cuts, but sometimes a cut is what is best for the future of the company. Dividend Aristocrats are not immune from that reality. Yet you will pay a huge premium for most aristocrats, when you can invest in a company that might have cut one, but will still grow its dividend over time.\nTake Global Partners LP (GLP), which sports a 9% yield, as an example. When COVID-19 hit, management cut the distribution to protect the company and benefit unitholders in the long term. Since then, GLP has rapidly raised its distribution to levels above what was paid pre-COVID.\nData byYCharts\nOne should never blindly trust a company's dividend raising streak or its low yield as the sole safety indicators. GLP had a high yield before COVID, and did have to cut the dividend during the crisis. However, its strong business model allowed it to recover quickly and a year later the dividend is higher than ever.\nThis myth causes many investors or retirees to hold low yield, low growth names with long track records of raises, all while missing out on vastly higher income levels.\nCuts happen for various reasons, especially during periods of economic turmoil like the Great Financial Crisis or COVID. You can protect yourself by having a higher degree of diversification in your portfolio and avoid panic if a company you hold takes proactive measures to benefit you long term!\nSWAN Stocks Don't Need Attention\nThe moniker SWAN, standing for Sleep Well At Night, is highly misleading. It seems everything under the sun gets described as a SWAN, or SUPER SWAN, or MEGA AWESOME ONCE A DECADE SWAN! Yet investors, especially those who just survived 2020's volatility, know that even so-called SWAN stocks require monitoring.\nThe High Dividend Opportunities Model Portfolio is actively managed. The pullback has opened up numerous arbitrage opportunities for yield-seeking investors.</p><p>SPACs list on a stock exchange in an initial public offering just like any other company. However, the so-called blank-check companies don’t have any business operations when they list. SPACs are just publicly traded cash shells with backers—called sponsors—responsible for identifying and negotiatinga merger with a private operating company, usually within two years. Cash raised in the IPO sits in a trust earning interest.</p><p>Once the companies merge, the operating company takes over the SPAC’s stock-market listing—the ticker symbol usually changes—and puts the SPAC’s cash toward investing in the business, buying out existing investors, or other uses. SPAC shareholders and sponsors both get a stake in the combined company.</p><p>SPACs exploded onto the scene in 2020 after spending more than two decades asrelatively obscure vehicles with less-than-stellar performance. Nearly 250 SPACs raised some $83 billion in IPO proceeds last year, according to SPAC Insider, with another 298 raising $97 billion just since the start of 2021. More credible sponsors, rock-bottom interest rates, and the market’s insatiable appetite for new public companies have fueled the SPAC boom.</p><p>Companies including&nbsp;QuantumScape&nbsp;(ticker: QS),Playboy(PLBY),Utz(UTZ), and&nbsp;DraftKings(DKNG) have all taken the SPAC route to go public over the past year. Those deals have beenhits with investors, and SPAC shareholders have earned a multiple on their investments. But plenty of other recently completed SPAC deals—such as&nbsp;MultiPlan(MPLN),Clover Health(CLOV), or&nbsp;United Wholesale Mortgage(UWMC)—have flopped.</p><p>Betting that a SPAC’s sponsors will complete a well-received merger is an inherently speculative exercise. It requires investors to put their faith into the team’s connections, negotiating skills, and ability to judge the prospects of a potential target business. The frothy SPAC market for most of the past year has been happy to take that bet, with the vast majority of SPACs trading at a premium to their trust values—until a few weeks ago.</p><p>The average SPAC’s market pricepremium to its trust valuehit a high of 26.9% in early March, according to data from theAccelerate Arbitrage Fund’s(ARB.Canada) Julian Klymochko. But just as rising bond yields have deflated valuations in many growth stocks and more speculative companies, they’ve helped prompt a correction in the SPAC market. The average SPAC premium had declined to about 3.5% by the end of March.</p><p>Numerous SPAC shares now trade for less than their per-share trust value. That opens up a much simpler and less speculative arbitrage strategy for investors in the sector thanbetting on deal makers’ abilityto close a deal with an attractive target company. Arbitrage investors swoop in when the price of an asset temporarily diverges from its underlying value and pocket that difference. This trade is similar to the arbitrage strategy employed by investors in closed-end funds, which involves buying or selling when the market price diverges from the net asset value per share.</p><p>That’s applicable to SPACs thanks to a unique right that their investors have: At the time of a SPAC’s merger, shareholders can redeem their stock for a proportionate share of the SPAC’s trust cash instead of participating in the deal. A SPAC that reaches its deadline without completing a merger automatically liquidates and returns its trust cash to shareholders.</p><p>Take&nbsp;Spartacus Acquisition(TMTS), a technology, media, and telecom-focused SPAC that raised $200 million in an IPO last October and a deadline 18 months later on April 20, 2022. The SPAC’s stock traded around $9.90 on Monday, versus a trust value per share of $10.15,according to its IPO prospectus.</p><p>Investors can effectively buy $10.15 worth of cash for $9.90, and still have the potential upside of a well-received deal if Spartacus’ sponsors deliver. In the case of a dud, investors can choose to redeem and get the $10.15 trust value plus whatever interest is earned meanwhile. That’s a guaranteed minimum yield of 2.5% to be received between now and the SPAC’s deadline about a year from now.
