since completing its merger through a special-purpose acquisition company, and most of the numbers look extremely impressive. However, the stock is significantly down since the report and is about 50% off its all-time highs. In this <i>Fool Live</i> video clip,&nbsp;<b>recorded on Aug. 19</b>, Fool.com contributor Matt Frankel, CFP, discusses why he's a big believer in this innovative financial company.</p>\n<p><b>Matt Frankel: </b>First, we'll start with the bad before we get into what's on your screen right now. We'll start with the bad news. SoFi, the stock, sold off. If you're a shareholder of SoFi, you already know that the stock is down about 20% since earnings in the past weeks. The battery reaction was due to a couple of factors. First, it posted a much wider loss than analysts had been expecting. No <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> expected SoFi to be profitable, but a loss of $0.48 per share on a roughly $15 stock is pretty big loss -- $0.48-per-share loss versus a $0.06 loss per share that was expected.</p>\n<p>A lot of investors had expected SoFi to raise its guidance for the year based on all these positive numbers that I'm about to talk about. They just maintain their guidance. I mean, a negative catalyst is the extension of the student loan pause. That's just not really helping their business at all. They cited that as the reason they kept their guidance flat, even though there are private lender, it had some trickle-down effects. That's why the shares sold off. But if you are a long-term investor and can ride out the ups and downs, here's a few reasons why you might want to pay attention.</p>\n<p>Number one, what you are looking at is member growth. These are how many people are registered and active in the SoFi ecosystem. Whether they are a borrower, whether they have a cash management account, whether they have a brokerage account, SoFi has 2.56 million members. If you look at the blue number on the bottom of this screen, that's the most important, the year-over-year growth. That's up 113% year over year, and the net growth rate has accelerated for eight quarters in a row. That's pretty impressive. A lot of companies posted accelerating growth in the early days of the pandemic. For example, a lot of tech disruptors we saw accelerate early throughout 2020. But this growth just continues to accelerate, and one of the big reasons is that SoFi keeps rolling on more and more products and getting more and more people into its ecosystem in one way or another. For example, a customer might start off as a brokerage customer and realize that SoFi is a great personal lender. Or someone who already borrows from SoFi might open a SoFi money account, which is a checking account replacement. This is the total number of products that SoFi members use, which is up even higher.</p>\n<p>Remember that members increased 113% year over year. The amount of products that their members use increased 123% year over year. Just doing the quick math, about 3.7 million products divided by 2.56 million members, shows that the average member is using about 1.5 products, so one or two products per member. A lot of room to expand in cross-sell products to existing members is the key takeaways. You could see this number accelerate in the quarters to come.</p>\n<p>There's two kinds of products that SoFi offers. You can generally break them into two categories; lending products and financial-services products. SoFi started out as a private student loan company, essentially. They have expanded it to personal lending. They offer mortgages on their website. This is now the main driver of their growth right now. They are a well-established lender. If I had to call one part of their business mature, it will probably be this one. Not surprising that this growth rate has decelerated if you look at the blue on the bottom of the screen. People really didn't need private student loans in the past year or so. A lot of people pumped the brakes on their education during the COVID pandemic. Didn't really want to pay for virtual school. Didn't need extra money to pay for housing and stuff that they were learning virtually. A lot of stimulus has decreased the need for personal loans in a lot of cases.</p>\n<p>Lending growth is not really the exciting part. But if you look at this chart, financial-services products, things like their money account, their brokerage account, their credit card product now. This is some incredible growth. Look at those numbers on the bottom: 243% year-over-year growth in the number of financial services products their members used. This looks like a parabolic growth chart, like, just exponentially growing and should continue to do so. Remember, 2.56 million members. If you look at that number, that's pretty close to 2.7 million financial-services products. Roughly one per member in terms of financial services products, so a lot of cross-selling potential. I'll get to the products SoFi offers in just a second. But really quick on just the numbers. I'll translate into revenue.</p>\n<p>Revenue grew slower than the membership base, which I think could've been a concern for investors and may have been a contributor to the decline in the share price. Revenues are up 74% year over year. Remember, membership grew 113%, so some of their newer members might not be converting into revenue as much as people wanted to see. On an adjusted basis, SoFi returned an adjusted EBITDA profit. Compared to last year during the middle of the pandemic when SoFi posted a loss. Pretty impressive, not a profitable company on traditional metrics yet, but definitely getting there. I mentioned cross-selling potential is really the thing to watch going forward. Remember, the average SoFi customer uses just over one financial-services product.</p>\n<p>Look on the right side of your screen there to the financial-services products they offer. SoFi Invest is a brokerage platform, which is essentially a <b>Robinhood</b> (NASDAQ:HOOD) competitor that, in my opinion, does it even better. They offer cryptocurrencies, they offer IPO access to all investors, things like that Robinhood are doing. But they offer things like educational services, prioritize long-term investing, really try to make people better investors, not just traders. Essentially, a better version of Robinhood, my opinion. SoFi Money is SoFi's bank alternative. SoFi recently acquired a bank that has a banking charter so it could build out that significantly in the quarters ahead. They have their own credit card product. A bunch of other financial service offerings there.</p>\n<p>Last thing I wanted to mention is the Galileo Technology Platform. That was an acquisition last April. They acquired the Galileo Technology Platform, which is essentially a payments platform that enables other companies to offer banking products to their customers. They have 79 million active accounts using that platform. Not through SoFi, not SoFi customers. SoFi uses this. They essentially let other companies use their infrastructure to offer financial-service products to their customers. Big part of the business just going to keep growing. That is up 119% year over year in terms of members. They acquired this last April. It's, in my opinion, going to improve to be a great pandemic era steal. They paid $1.2 billion for this platform, here, mentioned 79 million active accounts and more than doubling year-over-year. However, the stock is significantly down since the report and is about 50% off its all-time highs. In this Fool Live video clip, recorded on Aug. 19, Fool.com contributor Matt Frankel, CFP, discusses why he's a big believer in this innovative financial company.\nMatt Frankel: First, we'll start with the bad before we get into what's on your screen right now. We'll start with the bad news. SoFi, the stock, sold off. If you're a shareholder of SoFi, you already know that the stock is down about 20% since earnings in the past weeks. The battery reaction was due to a couple of factors. First, it posted a much wider loss than analysts had been expecting. No one expected SoFi to be profitable, but a loss of $0.48 per share on a roughly $15 stock is pretty big loss -- $0.48-per-share loss versus a $0.06 loss per share that was expected.\nA lot of investors had expected SoFi to raise its guidance for the year based on all these positive numbers that I'm about to talk about. They just maintain their guidance. I mean, a negative catalyst is the extension of the student loan pause. That's just not really helping their business at all. They cited that as the reason they kept their guidance flat, even though there are private lender, it had some trickle-down effects. That's why the shares sold off. But if you are a long-term investor and can ride out the ups and downs, here's a few reasons why you might want to pay attention.\nNumber one, what you are looking at is member growth. These are how many people are registered and active in the SoFi ecosystem. Whether they are a borrower, whether they have a cash management account, whether they have a brokerage account, SoFi has 2.56 million members. If you look at the blue number on the bottom of this screen, that's the most important, the year-over-year growth. That's up 113% year over year, and the net growth rate has accelerated for eight quarters in a row. That's pretty impressive. A lot of companies posted accelerating growth in the early days of the pandemic. For example, a lot of tech disruptors we saw accelerate early throughout 2020. But this growth just continues to accelerate, and one of the big reasons is that SoFi keeps rolling on more and more products and getting more and more people into its ecosystem in one way or another. For example, a customer might start off as a brokerage customer and realize that SoFi is a great personal lender. Or someone who already borrows from SoFi might open a SoFi money account, which is a checking account replacement. This is the total number of products that SoFi members use, which is up even higher.\nRemember that members increased 113% year over year. The amount of products that their members use increased 123% year over year. Just doing the quick math, about 3.7 million products divided by 2.56 million members, shows that the average member is using about 1.5 products, so one or two products per member. SolarEdge surged 11.4% in the premarket.</p>\n<p><b>12)&nbsp;Reynolds Consumer Products(REYN)</b> – Reynolds beat estimates by a penny a share, with quarterly earnings of 39 cents per share. Revenue fell short of Street forecasts, however. The maker of products like Hefty garbage bags and Reynolds Wrap said it was pleased with the results in the face of higher input costs supply chain issues. Reynolds lost 3.6% in premarket action.</p>\n<p><b>In rates,</b> treasuries drifted lower over early European session, tracking losses in bunds and gilts. The 10-year U.S. Treasury&nbsp;yield&nbsp;edged around 2bps higher after falling as low as 1.15%; the move steepened 2s10s, 5s30s by 1bp each. Higher S&amp;P futures also added pressure on rising yields, following gains across European stocks amid positive earnings results. Germany’s 10-year yield fell to its lowest since early February at -0.486%. It was last up less than a basis point at -0.47%. Its 30-year yield, which turned negative and sent the whole German yield curve into negative territory on Monday, was hovering around 0%.</p>\n<p>“There is some definite downside bias in the dollar now,” said Vasileios Gkionakis, Global Head of FX Strategy at fund manager Lombard Odier in Switzerland. “You are starting to a see a rotation of growth away from the U.S.”</p>\n<p>According to strategists the months-long advance in Treasuries which saw 10Y real yields drop to fresh record lows on Monday, points to worries that a weaker period lies ahead for the economic reopening from the health crisis, though second-quarter corporate earnings have been robust for the most part. The euro eked out an advance to a session high of 1.1885 per dollar; the pound climbed back above $1.39 and gilts halted a three-day gain as caution reigns ahead of Bank of England’s meeting on Thursday.<b>The Australian dollar jumped after the nation’s central bank said it will stick to its tapering plan, arguing that the economy will rebound from the latest virus outbreak.</b>Traders rushed to close short positions on the Aussie after the Reserve Bank of Australia decision on Tuesday, according to Asia-based FX traders. Existing AUD/NZD flows after the RBA decision propelled New Zealand’s dollar to a new session high.</p>\n<p>Australia’s currency advanced after its central bank kept a&nbsp;plan&nbsp;to taper bond purchases despite a protracted lockdown in Sydney.</p>\n<p><b>In commodities, </b>crude oil&nbsp;reversed&nbsp;earlier losses as sentiment improved in broader markets even though the spread of the delta coronavirus variant, including in the key market of China, continues to pose a risk to demand. Brent crude was up 33 cents in London at $73.28 per barrel. U.S. crude inched up to $71.56 a barrel while gold and industrial metal copper were both slightly lower at $1,810.45 per ounce and 9,594.50 a tonne respectively.</p>\n<p>Looking at the day ahead, this morning the only data due out is the June PPI print for the Euro area. This afternoon in the US June factory orders and final June revisions for durable and capital goods orders are expected as well as July vehicle sales data. Yet none of that grand strategizing has addressed his main problem: a&nbsp;growing pile of debt.</p>\n<p>Every few months, Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co., the parent company of Hong Kong-listed Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd. and Sweden’s Volvo Car AB, comes up with yet&nbsp;another plan for its various subsidiaries. Whether it’s listing them on public markets or monetizing assets, creating new brands to boost valuations or merging various parts and units, the goal, it seems, is often the same: shifting value from one corner to another,&nbsp;and&nbsp;maximizing&nbsp;the efficiency of all the capitalthat's being put to work.</p>\n<p>At this point, most investors have gotten used to these maneuvers, and&nbsp;it isn’t hard to see Li’s motivation. Volvo, his crown jewel, isheading toward&nbsp;an initial public offeringby the end of this year&nbsp;thatcould value the business at around $20 billion. That&nbsp;figure has been a touchy point, and plans for a listing fell through in 2018 because Li and investors couldn’t see eye-to-eye.</p>\n<p>But shareholders&nbsp;would do well to look beyond those efforts, and pay attention to the constant tinkering. Those moves will weigh on prospects if Li doesn’t pay down debt at the parent-company level.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4deaa74ec8dd348f28f42c2130f3b2d6\" tg-width=\"1703\" tg-height=\"1078\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\">In July, Volvo agreed to take control of its part-owned research and development center and manufacturing operations in China from Zhejiang Geely. That came afterthe companies shelved&nbsp;a plan to merge&nbsp;Geely Automobile and Volvo, which was supposed to help streamline capital spending and production costs.&nbsp;They thencarved out a new unit— Aurobay, jointly owned with Zhejiang Geely&nbsp;—&nbsp;to merge internal-combustion-engine operations. The company would become a global supplier of powertrains.</p>\n<p>In the same month,&nbsp;Volvo said it intends&nbsp;to raise&nbsp;its stake&nbsp;in electric car performance brand Polestar.&nbsp;The investment in Polestar increased&nbsp;in&nbsp;value as a private placement triggered a valuation effect of 2.0 billion Swedish kronor ($239&nbsp;million) for Volvo.&nbsp;Bloomberg News reportedthat Polestar&nbsp;was in talks to go public through a blank-check firm, a SPAC, that could value the combined&nbsp;company at $25 billion.</p>\n<p>In January,&nbsp;Zhejiang Geelyhad divested of its holdingsin Polestar and converted it into a wholly-owned subsidiary of Volvo Cars (China) Investment Co.</p>\n<p>The common factor in all of this is a reliance&nbsp;on Volvo, Zhejiang&nbsp;Geely’s cash cow. In the years since Libought the Swedish automaker from Ford Motor Co.,he has managed to turn the struggling company around. Now it hands out dividends to its major shareholder and undertakes several related-party transactions with subsidiaries and units tied to Geely. In the first half of the year, Volvo, through its Chinese joint venture, distributed around 4.13 billion Swedish kronor to the parent and 5.97 billion Swedish kronor as part of a special dividend. Operationally, too, Volvo isnow the more powerful brand compared&nbsp;with homegrown Geely.</p>\n<p>Yet all that value could be at risk given Zhejiang Geely’smounting pile of debt, at 155 billion yuan ($23.9 billion) at the end of 2020, up from 126 billion yuan a year earlier. Even if Volvo and the listed Geely unit aren’t as indebted, this amount of leverage at the parent level&nbsp;is hard to manage, especially when spending needs continue to increase and capital raising is difficult.</p>\n<p>As arecent bond offering documentnoted, “the Group’s relatively high level of indebtedness and leverage could materially and adversely affect its liquidity,” adding that it could&nbsp;require putting more cash flows from operations toward&nbsp;repaying borrowings, and&nbsp;in turn, reduce what’s available to fund working capital. The elevated debt burden could also limit flexibility, according to the document.</p>\n<p>Li can’t reduce debt&nbsp;without equity financing from its various subsidiaries, as S&amp;P Global Ratings has said. Listing the Geely unit on the Shanghai Star&nbsp;Board could have&nbsp;helped with deleveraging, but that fell through. The company is&nbsp;now looking atexternal financing options for the recentlycreated Zeekr Intelligent Technology unit, one of its&nbsp;electric vehicle brands.</p>\n<p>With the Volvo IPO penciled in for the end of the year, Li may find it worthwhile to keep things simple. Revenue hit $12 billion</b></p>\n<p>Helped by a 121% year-over-year increase in vehicle deliveries, Tesla's revenue surged 98% year over year to approximately $12 billion. This crushed analysts' average forecast for revenue of $11.3 billion.</p>\n<p><b>2. Profits skyrocketed</b></p>\n<p>Of course, with revenue like this, it wasn't surprising to see profits soar. Net income increased from $104 million in the year-ago period to $1.14 billion. Non-GAAP (adjusted) net income increased 258% year over year to $1.6 billion. This translated to non-GAAP earnings per share of $1.45 -- far ahead of a consensus analyst estimate of $0.98.</p>\n<p>The outsized growth in Tesla's profits demonstrates the scalability of the company's business model.</p>\n<p><b>3. Free cash flow remains healthy</b></p>\n<p>Tesla once again generated positive free cash flow, or cash flow from operations less capital expenditures. Free cash flow for the period increased from $418 million in the year-ago period to $619 million.</p>\n<p>Total cash on hand fell from $17.1 billion in the first quarter of 2021 to $16.2 billion but this was primarily due to $1.6 billion in net debt and finance lease repayments.</p>\n<p><b>4. Vehicle demand is robust</b></p>\n<p>Tesla once again said demand for its vehicles achieved record levels. Indeed, demand is so robust that the company is supply constrained. \"Global demand continues to be robust, and we are producing at the limits of available parts supply,\" Tesla explained.</p>\n<p><b>5. There's more sharp growth to come</b></p>\n<p>Importantly, Tesla remains optimistic about its growth trajectory. The company says it continues to expect to grow its total deliveries more than 50% year over year this year. This implies 2021 total deliveries of more than 750,000. So far, Tesla has delivered more than 386,000 vehicles this year.</p>\n<p>\"The rate of growth will depend on our equipment capacity, operational efficiency, and the capacity and stability of the supply chain,\" Tesla noted.</p>\n<h4>Four Challenges to Tesla’s Growth</h4>\n<p>However,investors are concerned with several factors that may slow Tesla's feverish share price growth soon.</p>\n<p><b>High Valuation</b></p>\n<p>Wall Street is an efficient market, discounting good news and bad news on listed companies. As a result, shares are run-up ahead of good news and sold-off ahead of bad news. Sometimes, Mr. Market—to use Benjamin Graham's terminology—is too optimistic, sending the shares of listed companies well above their fundamental or intrinsic value. Other times, Mr. Market is too pessimistic, sending shares of listed companies well below their intrinsic value.</p>\n<p>Tesla's shares are overvalued by many standards. TipRanks, for instance, estimates Tesla's 12-month-trailing return on equity to be a modest 12.41%, while estimates put Tesla's intrinsic value at $160.11, well below its current price level.</p>\n<p><b>Competition from Colonizers</b></p>\n<p>Once, Tesla had little competition, as the electric vehicle (EV) market it pioneered had little competition from traditional automakers. However, that's no longer the case, as General Motors, Ford, Volkswagen, and Toyota are invading the electric market.</p>\n<p>These \"colonizers\" of the EV market have the manufacturing experience, expertise, and distribution networks to scale up EV production and cross the \"tipping point\" of bringing EVs to the masses. Meanwhile, the entry of new competitors into the EV market could unleash price competition that will erode Tesla's revenue growth and profit margins. That's something Wall Street is watching closely in quarterly financial statements.</p>\n<p><b>Bitcoin Exposure</b></p>\n<p>Tesla's CEO Elon Musk has an affinity for bitcoin. That's why he has been investing some of the company's cash in digital currency. As of the end of March, Tesla's $1.5 billion investment was worth $2.48 billion, based on the surge in bitcoin in the first quarter. However, that has its risks, too, given bitcoin's volatility.</p>\n<p>Adding to bitcoin's volatility are accounting rules that treat the digital currency as an indefinite-lived intangible asset. Thus, it is subject to impairment losses if its fair value decreases below the carrying value during the assessed reporting period. Companies cannot recover impairment losses for any subsequent increase in fair value until the asset's sale. Tesla reported bitcoin-related impairments of $23 million in Q2 as the price of digital currency dived.</p>\n<p><b>Rising Material Costs</b></p>\n<p>Together with traditional automobile makers, Tesla faces a severe material shortage due to supply chain disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic, which is expected to slow down the pace of its feverish growth.</p>\n<p>\"While we're making cars at full speed, the global chip shortage situation remains quite serious,\" Musk told investors. \"For the rest of this year, our growth rates will be determined by the slowest part in our supply chain,\" adding that there are a wide range of chips that will serve as that brake on growth.</p>\n<h4>Mixed reviews from Wall Street</h4>\n<p>Needham analyst Rajvindra Gill said Tesla shares are already priced to perfection, which could explain the stock’s weakness on Tuesday.</p>\n<p>“Tesla's ‘priced to perfection’ valuation is hard for us to justify, even with more positive recent Results,” Gill wrote.</p>\n<p>Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas said the quarter likely didn’t change the narrative for bulls or bears, and Tesla is still not a value stock priced at an enterprise multiple of 70x.</p>\n<p>“Tesla is not only among the fastest growing auto companies in the world, it is also one of the most profitable,” Jonas wrote.</p>\n<p>Wells Fargo analyst Colin Langan said auto gross margins were impressive, but they may not last.</p>\n<p>“We see auto margins moderating in Q3/Q4 due to rising raw mat costs and mix dilution as the lower priced Model Y SR launches in China,” Langran wrote.</p>\n<p>John Murphy with B. of A. Securities struck a more cautious tone. Despite the beat, \"competition is fierce and heating up,\" he said. \"(Tesla's) operating environment is shifting from that of a vacuum to an increasingly crowded space.\"</p>\n<p>The quarterly beat was \"very much helped by positive pricing dynamics and good execution,\" and Murphy raised his price target on the stock to $800 from $750, which represents an upside around 26% from Tuesday's prices.
