Like many other EV makers, NIO initially attracted a stampede of bulls during the stimulus-induced rally in growth stocks, but quickly lost its luster amid rising interest rates and other macro headwinds.</p><p>Yet NIO is already producing tens of thousands of vehicles each year, putting it far ahead of smaller EV makers that are struggling to ramp up their production. At three times this year&#39;s sales, NIO&#39;s stock also looks cheap relative to most of its industry peers. So could this be the right time for patient investors to pick up some shares of NIO?</p><h2>Reviewing NIO&#39;s core business</h2><p>NIO launched its first electric vehicle, the high-end EP9 supercar, back in 2016. However, this vehicle was never mass produced, and none of its 16 production models were ever registered for use on normal roads. In late 2017, NIO properly entered the mainstream EV market with the launch of its full-size ES8 SUV.</p><p>NIO subsequently launched two additional mid-size SUVs, the ES6 and EC6, in 2019 and 2020, respectively. In 2021, it rolled out two sedans, the ET5 and ET7, and started delivering both vehicles earlier this year. It also launched another &#34;mid-large&#34; SUV, the ES7, this June. NIO&#39;s Chinese competitor <b>Li Auto</b>, which delivered 90,491 Li ONE SUVs in 2021, also experienced a similar slowdown, with 86,927 deliveries in the first nine months of 2022.</p><p>However, both NIO and Li are still far ahead of their smaller American counterparts like <b>Lucid</b>, which expects to produce 6,000 to 7,000 vehicles this year, and <b>Rivian</b>, which is trying to ramp up its production to manufacture 25,000 vehicles this year.</p><p>NIO also differs from its domestic and overseas counterparts because it uses battery-swapping stations, which allow drivers to quickly swap out their depleted batteries for fully charged ones, instead of charging stations. That approach makes NIO similar to the Taiwanese electric scooter maker <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/GGR\">Gogoro</a></b>, which also builds networks of battery-swapping stations for riders. Just like Gogoro, NIO charges subscription fees to access those stations.</p><h2>Reviewing NIO&#39;s main challenges</h2><p>NIO is gradually expanding overseas into smaller European markets like Norway, but it still generates most of its revenue in China. That concentration exposes it to the unpredictable lockdowns related to China&#39;s zero-COVID policy and the weakening of the yuan against the U.S. dollar, which reduces the value of its overseas shares. As a Chinese company, NIO could also be hurt by tougher trade restrictions for semiconductors, as well as the ongoing threats to delist U.S.-listed Chinese stocks.</p><p>Analysts expect NIO&#39;s sales to rise 61% in 2022 and increase another 82% in 2023, but those estimates seem a bit too bullish and don&#39;t seem to fully account for its decelerating shipments this year. Macroeconomic challenges could also curb the average consumer&#39;s demand for its pricey vehicles, which start at $70,000 to $80,000 (before subsidies).</p><p>NIO is still deeply unprofitable, but analysts expect it to turn profitable in 2024. That might seem possible, since NIO&#39;s gross margin already rose from negative 5.2% in 2018 to positive 18.9% in 2021 as it scaled up its business. However, its gross margins also declined year-over-year in the first half of 2022 as the macro headwinds squeezed its vehicle margins while it ramped up its investments in its battery-swapping network.</p><p>Therefore, analysts&#39; expectations for NIO to turn profitable within two years -- which are pegged to its high sales estimates -- also seem too optimistic. On the bright side, NIO was still sitting on $8.1 billion in cash, cash equivalents, and restricted cash at the end of June, compared to a net loss of $410 million in the first half of the year, so it won&#39;t run out of cash anytime soon. Its low debt-to-equity ratio of 0.6 also gives it some room to raise fresh funds.</p><h2>Is it the right time to buy NIO?</h2><p>NIO looks cheap compared to Lucid and Rivian, which still trade at 31 and 17 times this year&#39;s sales, respectively. But it&#39;s still comparable to Li Auto, which also trades at about three times this year&#39;s sales. NIO and Li are both growing, but their valuations will remain depressed as long as so many macroeconomic and regulatory clouds are hanging over Chinese companies. In fact, those arguably aren&#39;t even your best options.</p><p>You may find it&#39;s far easier to build a well-diversified, income-generating portfolio around a handful of dividend-oriented exchange-traded funds. Here&#39;s a trio of such ETFs to consider, with each one bringing something unique to the table.</p><h2>1. Vanguard Dividend Appreciation ETF</h2><p>Just as the name suggests, the <b>Vanguard Dividend Appreciation ETF</b> holds stocks of companies with a history of dividend growth. Namely, it&#39;s meant to mirror the <b>S&amp;P U.S. Dividend Growers Index</b>. It consists of the 290 highest-yielding names -- roughly 25% of the <b>S&amp;P 500 Broad Market Index</b>&#39;s holdings, provided those companies have raised their annual dividend payments for at least the past 10 consecutive years.</p><p>In other words, it holds stocks of companies that have proven their payout growth has staying power.</p><p>And the fund&#39;s own payouts from these dividends reflect this consistent growth. Last quarter&#39;s payment of $0.69 per share is markedly better than the payout of $0.52 per share for the same quarter five years earlier. Ten years ago, the mid-year quarterly dividend payment was only around $0.32 per share. The trade-off is the relatively low yield you get whenever you first step into a position. The current dividend yield is a modest 1.9%, and that&#39;s not out of line with its historical yields, even going back to 2008 when interest rates were wildly erratic.</p><p>It&#39;s worth it, though, even beyond the below-average yield. The price of the fund itself is 160% higher than it was 10 years ago, giving income investors a nice shot of capital appreciation as well.</p><h2>2. SPDR Portfolio S&amp;P 500 High Dividend ETF</h2><p>At the other end of the yield spectrum, you&#39;ll find the <b>SPDR Portfolio S&amp;P 500 High Dividend ETF</b>, currently dishing out a solid 3.8% of its value in the form of annual dividends.</p><p>As you might suspect, the SPDR Portfolio S&amp;P 500 High Dividend ETF aims to own high-yielding stocks. The fund specifically mirrors the <b>S&amp;P 500 High Dividend Index</b>, which is made up of the <b>S&amp;P 500</b>&#39;s 80 highest-yielding stocks. Since the index&#39;s highest-yielding tickers can change on a rather regular basis, the fund&#39;s constituents are updated a couple of times per year to reflect these changes.</p><p>Veteran investors know that high yields can be a trap. The payouts look generous, but there&#39;s often an underlying reason a stock&#39;s price is low enough to push its dividend yield to among the highest within an index&#39;s members. And certainly, this approach has allowed the occasional clunker to make its way into the portfolio&#39;s mix. When you&#39;ve got a total of 80 stocks in the mix, though, that occasional clunker&#39;s problems are more than overcome by the remaining stock&#39;s growth and strong dividend payments.</p><p>In this vein, the S&amp;P 500 High Dividend Index is up more than 21% in the past five years and higher to the tune of 95% in the past 10. That&#39;s in addition to the above-average dividends it&#39;s paid out during that time. That&#39;s not bad at all, even if its dividend growth is slower than that of the Vanguard Dividend Appreciation ETF.</p><h2>3. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/EFFE\">Global X</a> NASDAQ 100 Covered Call ETF</h2><p>Lastly, add the <b>Global X NASDAQ 100 Covered Call ETF</b> to your list of dividend-paying ETF prospects you should consider if you&#39;re looking for additional retirement income.</p><p>For most investors, equity and index options (essentially, contractual bets that a stock or the market will move in a specified direction by a certain point in time) impose far too much risk relative to their prospective reward. They&#39;re also fickle instruments, not to mention complicated. Even covered calls can be more of a pain to try than they&#39;re worth despite sometimes being considered a riskless type of trade; the risk lies in the potential opportunity cost.</p><p>When left to the professionals who can give a full-time effort to the task, though, selling covered calls is an effective means of generating cash over and over again.</p><p>To this end, the Global X NASDAQ 100 Covered Call ETF&#39;s current trailing-12-month yield of 11.4% is neither a fluke nor a typo. The fund has actually dished out that sort of income monthly.</p><p>There&#39;s a catch of sorts. That is, when covered-call strategies are working, they&#39;re generally working well. When they&#39;re not working perfectly, though, they&#39;re generally not working at all. That&#39;s why retirees may not want to completely rely on income from QYLD. Here's a trio of such ETFs to consider, with each one bringing something unique to the table.1. Vanguard Dividend Appreciation ETFJust as the name suggests, the Vanguard Dividend Appreciation ETF holds stocks of companies with a history of dividend growth. Namely, it's meant to mirror the S&P U.S. Dividend Growers Index. It consists of the 290 highest-yielding names -- roughly 25% of the S&P 500 Broad Market Index's holdings, provided those companies have raised their annual dividend payments for at least the past 10 consecutive years.In other words, it holds stocks of companies that have proven their payout growth has staying power.And the fund's own payouts from these dividends reflect this consistent growth. Last quarter's payment of $0.69 per share is markedly better than the payout of $0.52 per share for the same quarter five years earlier. Ten years ago, the mid-year quarterly dividend payment was only around $0.32 per share. The trade-off is the relatively low yield you get whenever you first step into a position. The current dividend yield is a modest 1.9%, and that's not out of line with its historical yields, even going back to 2008 when interest rates were wildly erratic.It's worth it, though, even beyond the below-average yield. The price of the fund itself is 160% higher than it was 10 years ago, giving income investors a nice shot of capital appreciation as well.2. SPDR Portfolio S&P 500 High Dividend ETFAt the other end of the yield spectrum, you'll find the SPDR Portfolio S&P 500 High Dividend ETF, currently dishing out a solid 3.8% of its value in the form of annual dividends.As you might suspect, the SPDR Portfolio S&P 500 High Dividend ETF aims to own high-yielding stocks. The fund specifically mirrors the S&P 500 High Dividend Index, which is made up of the S&P 500's 80 highest-yielding stocks. Since the index's highest-yielding tickers can change on a rather regular basis, the fund's constituents are updated a couple of times per year to reflect these changes.Veteran investors know that high yields can be a trap. The payouts look generous, but there's often an underlying reason a stock's price is low enough to push its dividend yield to among the highest within an index's members. And certainly, this approach has allowed the occasional clunker to make its way into the portfolio's mix. When you've got a total of 80 stocks in the mix, though, that occasional clunker's problems are more than overcome by the remaining stock's growth and strong dividend payments.In this vein, the S&P 500 High Dividend Index is up more than 21% in the past five years and higher to the tune of 95% in the past 10. They're also fickle instruments, not to mention complicated. Even covered calls can be more of a pain to try than they're worth despite sometimes being considered a riskless type of trade; the risk lies in the potential opportunity cost.When left to the professionals who can give a full-time effort to the task, though, selling covered calls is an effective means of generating cash over and over again.To this end, the Global X NASDAQ 100 Covered Call ETF's current trailing-12-month yield of 11.4% is neither a fluke nor a typo.
