Disney has been investing in updating the attraction on both coasts. It's not necessarily the new film's arrival inspiring the tweaks. We're not getting audio-animatronics of Blunt and The Rock added to the watery attraction. The original Jungle Cruise ride had some elements that don't jibe with the woke new normal, joining Pirates of the Caribbean and eventually Splash Mountain as classic rides that are going for a more socially-aware makeover.
\n
Disney's ecosystem is difficult to top. It's not just mere luck that the Disney+ streaming service would go on to top 100 million paying subscribers just months into its second year of availability. Put it all together and Disney is built to cash in on any property that spikes in popularity in any of its operating segments.
\n
The easiest connection is when Disney has a hit movie, a pond that is well stocked after making 10-figure acquisitions of Marvel, Pixar, and Lucasfilm. Lucasfilm's Star Wars is the basis of themed lands at Disney's theme parks in Florida and California; it's the series that put Disney+ on the map, and a Star Wars-themed luxury escapism hotel will open next year at Disney World.
\n
The new Behind the Attraction show on Disney+ is smart. It gives the bellwether media stock promotional material that it can push out as content for the fast-growing service. Extreme bullish or bearish readings are often viewed as contrarian signals that markets are due for a either a bounce or a pullback.
\n
The S&P 500 on Thursday pushed above the 4,000 milestone for the first time, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average traded not far off its all-time high. U.S. stocks rallied in the first quarter, with cyclically sensitive shares leading the way as aggressive fiscal stimulus measures and rapid vaccine rollouts stoked expectations for a post-COVID economic boom.
\n
\"Increasingly euphoric sentiment is a key reason for our neutral outlook as the cyclical rebound, vaccine, stimulus, etc. is largely priced into the market,\" the analysts wrote. Stocks have rebounded sharply after plunging into a bear market that bottomed out last March as the pandemic began to take hold.
\n
The analysts noted that since last March, the average recommended equity allocation has risen by over three times the typical rate. It's up 450 basis points, or 4.5 percentage points, over the last 12 months versus the average of 138 basis points following previous bear markets.
\n
\"We've found Wall Street's bullishness to be a reliable contrarian indicator,\" they wrote.
\n
For now, the indicator remains in \"neutral\" territory. What does that mean for returns?
\n
The analysts noted that when the indicator has been at or below its current level, subsequent 12-month returns have been positive 89% of the time. While that's encouraging, they observed that the current reading of the indicator is in line with 12-month returns of just 6%, well below the average 12-month forecast of 14% since the end of the 2008 global financial crisis, adding the standard caveat that past performance isn't an indication of future results.
\n
The analysts said investors would be best served by focusing on areas sensitive to the real economy, including cyclical and value stocks, capital-expenditure beneficiaries and small-caps as President Joe Biden attempts to push through his $2 trillion infrastructure spending plan.
\n
\"But it's not all blue skies. The market appears to already be pricing in additional stimulus and the focus is shifting to paying it back (i.e., higher taxes),\" they warned. \"Valuations today are signaling anemic long-term returns and rising rates are also a headwind for both income investors, who have piled into equities amid low rates, and corporate margins.\"
\n
They also see room for volatility to pick up in the second half of the year. That said, \"staying invested is an underappreciated way to avoid losses,\" they wrote, with a focus on fundamental factors over momentum and positioning factors winning over the long run. It uses the personal-consumption expenditures deflator instead of the consumer-price index because PCE is the Fed's preferred measure of inflation and to make better comparisons with spending data.
\n
It shows that most items have moved backward and forward along the horizontal axis, implying that prices have shown little sensitivity to changes in demand, Vernazza explained. And for service sectors hit particuarly hard by the pandemic, including airfares and accommodation, the reopening of the econony has led to only a partial recovery of prices, which are still not back to pre-pandemic levels.
\n
It's a somewhat different story for car rentals, where acute supply shortages have caused prices to surge, while spending in the sector remains well below pre-pandemic levels because of limited supply. For used cars, the combination of a switch away from public transport by commuters and a global shortage of semiconductors for new cars has pushed up both demand and prices, he said..
\n
What's important to note, Vernazza said, is that since higher inflation is largely explained by the reopening of the economy and supply shortages, it's likely to prove temporary as the direct effects of the pandemic fade and supply adjusts to meet demand.
\n
But what would a more enduring inflation threat look like?
\n
In that case, most of the items would occupy the upper-right quadrant of the chart, reflecting what economists refer to as \"demand-pull inflation,\" Vernazza said. To date, \"this is clearly not the case,\" the economist wrote.
\n
While inflation jitters rattled financial markets as recently as last month, investor concerns have appeared to wane. Treasurys rallied Thursday, despite another hotter-than-expected consumer-price index reading , sending the yield on the 10-year Treasury note below 1.45%.
\n
See:Treasury yields fall despite rising inflation -- here are some reasons why
\n
Higher inflation is typically seen as bad news for bonds, eroding the value of the interest payments delivered to holders. Stocks rallied Thursday, with the S&P 500 edging to a record close on Thursday, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average remains not far off its all-time high and rallying tech shares, which are more sensitive to interest rates, pushed the Nasdaq Composite higher.
\n
The Federal Reserve holds a policy meeting next week. While Fed officials have largely stuck to their view that inflation pressures will prove \"transitory,\" several have also said it's time to begin thinking about when it would be appropriate to discuss pulling back on asset purchases at the center of its extraordinary monetary policy efforts to support the economy and heal the labor market.
\n
And some economists caution that signs of inflationary pressures in more cyclical segments of the economy are beginning to emerge.
\n
\"Both rent and owners' equivalent rent have staged a clear turnaround over recent months, and food-away-from-home prices surged by 0.6%,\" said Michael Pearce, senior U.S. economist at Capital Economics, in a note. \"It is no coincidence that rents and restaurant prices are rising more rapidly when wage growth is also accelerating.\"
\n
Pearce said a continued surge in job openings shows that worker shortages \"are real and intensifying.\"
\n
\"The recent strength of inflation and signs of labor shortages could prompt a handful of hawkish regional Fed presidents to bring forward their projections for rate increases and strengthen calls for tapering asset purchases sooner rather than later at next week's FOMC meeting,\" he wrote. \"But we suspect the majority on the committee will stick to the 'largely transitory' language and instead emphasize the yawning shortfall in employment from pre-pandemic levels.\"
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Inflation scare? It uses the personal-consumption expenditures deflator instead of the consumer-price index because PCE is the Fed's preferred measure of inflation and to make better comparisons with spending data.\nIt shows that most items have moved backward and forward along the horizontal axis, implying that prices have shown little sensitivity to changes in demand, Vernazza explained. And for service sectors hit particuarly hard by the pandemic, including airfares and accommodation, the reopening of the econony has led to only a partial recovery of prices, which are still not back to pre-pandemic levels.\nIt's a somewhat different story for car rentals, where acute supply shortages have caused prices to surge, while spending in the sector remains well below pre-pandemic levels because of limited supply. For used cars, the combination of a switch away from public transport by commuters and a global shortage of semiconductors for new cars has pushed up both demand and prices, he said..\nWhat's important to note, Vernazza said, is that since higher inflation is largely explained by the reopening of the economy and supply shortages, it's likely to prove temporary as the direct effects of the pandemic fade and supply adjusts to meet demand.\nBut what would a more enduring inflation threat look like?\nIn that case, most of the items would occupy the upper-right quadrant of the chart, reflecting what economists refer to as \"demand-pull inflation,\" Vernazza said. To date, \"this is clearly not the case,\" the economist wrote.\nWhile inflation jitters rattled financial markets as recently as last month, investor concerns have appeared to wane. Treasurys rallied Thursday, despite another hotter-than-expected consumer-price index reading , sending the yield on the 10-year Treasury note below 1.45%.\nSee:Treasury yields fall despite rising inflation -- here are some reasons why\nHigher inflation is typically seen as bad news for bonds, eroding the value of the interest payments delivered to holders.
