What sort of upside can it really offer?\" While the rule of big numbers would seemingly not be in Old Softy's favor, we're talking about a $1.85 trillion company that's consistently growing by a double-digit percentage every single year.</p>\n<p>Microsoft's secret sauce for success is the company's focus on high-margin cloud-based services and subscriptions, as well as its inorganic growth potential. In terms of the former, Microsoft is delivering double-digit growth almost across the board. Cloud infrastructure services platform Azure has been the star, with year-over-year sales growth of 50% in Microsoft's March-ended quarter. But it also delivered double-digit cloud segment growth from its Office Commercial, Dynamics, and Windows Commercial segments.</p>\n<p>In terms of inorganic growth, Microsoft is able to take far more chances than most companies, as exemplified by its deal announced in April to buy <b>Nuance Communications</b> for $19.7 billion. Microsoft is <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> of only two public companies to hold the AAA credit rating with Standard &amp; Poor's, it generated $72.7 billion in operating cash flow over just the trailing 12 months, and it has $125 billion in cash and cash equivalents on its balance sheet. This really says <b>IBM</b> (NYSE:IBM), which is one of the most chronically underperforming tech stocks over the past decade.</p>\n<p>The big issue with IBM is that it was late to the party in making the transition to cloud computing. Being weighed down by its legacy software, IBM has seen its year-over-year sales decline in virtually every quarter over the past seven years. With conditions perfect for high-growth stocks to thrive, IBM has simply been an afterthought in the tech space.</p>\n<p>But times are changing, and IBM is finally keeping up. Through a combination of organic innovation and acquisitions, such as Red Hat, the percentage of revenue derived from the cloud has been rising considerably in recent years. In the March-ended quarter, IBM generated $6.5 billion in aggregate cloud revenue, which was up 21% from the previous year. This $6.5 billion accounted for approximately 37% of total sales. That's important for one big reason: Cloud and cognitive software profit margin was 76% in the first quarter, whereas its legacy segments offer profit margins of around 30%. These higher profit margins will allow IBM's cash flow to grow at a faster pace than its sales.</p>\n<p>However, it should be noted that IBM has done a pretty good job with a tough situation. It has aggressively reduced costs in its legacy divisions to boost margins and generate ample cash flow. This is allowing IBM to reduce its debt and pay a hearty 4.5% yield.</p>\n<p>IBM has taken close to a decade to reinvent itself, but it looks to have finally crested the hill. It's software that makes obvious sense for retailers and hotels, for example, but is catching on big-time in the healthcare, financial, and industrial sectors.</p>\n<p>When it comes to CRM software, Salesforce sits atop the mountain. According to IDC estimates from the first half of 2020, Salesforce controlled almost 20% of global CRM revenue share. This was approximately four times higher than the next-closest competitor, and it's more than the Nos. 2 through 5, combined.</p>\n<p>Salesforce is growing inorganically, too. Therefore, Epic wants iOS users to be able to download directly from the Epic Games Store. \"The facts will support an iOS app distribution market and a totally separate iOS in-app payment solutions market,\" she said.</p><p>\"Apple's repeated statements that we have never increased pricing is false,\" Forrest said. \"Prior to 2009, developers did not have to pay Apple anything for purchases, and after 2009 [when the App Store was already profitable, with a 77.8% profit margin] they did. Prior to 2011, they did not have to pay 30% for subscriptions, after 2011, they did.\"</p><p>(Apple disputes the 77.8% figure. However, the market is forward-looking, and the company's guidance disappointed. For Q2, management expects GMS to grow only 5% to 15% from the comparable period last year -- a sharp drop-off from its growth rate in Q1.</p>\n<p>With this news, a slew of analysts were quick to cut their price targets on Etsy stock. Indeed, growth stocks like Etsy have been selling off sharply over the past couple of months, stoking fears and leading to reactive moves. For example, Oppenheimer is lowering its price target for Etsy today by 20%. But let's not forget that the $240 price target was set by the same Oppenheimer analyst on Feb. 26. In February the market was hot and investors were more optimistic, leading to higher price targets. So take today's lowered price target from Oppenheimer and others with a grain of salt.</p>\n<p>For Etsy shareholders, there's an overlooked metric that I believe bodes well to the long-term health of the company. In Q1, active buyers on the platform were up 90% year over year and active sellers were up 67%. The continued steady increase of both buyers and sellers creates a kind of network effect, making this a stronger platform and harder to disrupt. This doesn't mean the stock can't head lower in the short term -- it can. In 2020, the company generated $2.5 billion in revenue, up 126% y/y. In 2021, the company is expected to grow 117% y/y to $5.4 billion.</p>\n<p>The company is not yet profitable but is expected to be by 2022. Gross margin only turned positive in 2020 and is expected to be 19.3% in 2021. EBITDA is expected to be negative $258 million in 2021 and a positive $206 million in 2022. Free cash flow is expected to be negative $42 million in 2021 before turning to a positive $354 million in 2022.</p>\n<p>However, despite the cash burn expected in 2021, investors should feel at ease since the company exited&nbsp;2020&nbsp;with $5.9 billion of cash and cash equivalents. Including $600 million in short-term investments and subtracting ~$2.1 billion in debt and operating leases and the expected negative free cash flow in 2021, NIO should exit 2021 with over $4 billion in net cash and investments. That is plenty of buffers since NIO is expected to generate positive free cash flow in 2022.</p>\n<p>Since NIO is not yet profitable, we will look at the forward EV/Sales multiple as is typical for hyper-growth companies not yet generating a profit. The company went public in September 2018, trading at around 7 to 8 times EV/Sales, before bottoming out at around 0.7 times sales in May 2019. The market, however, caught the EV fever in April 2020 and sent NIO's valuation soaring to a peak of 14.6x by January 2021. After the growth sell-off we recently experienced, NIO is currently sitting at a much more reasonable 8 times forward sales. This is a significant discount to TSLA's 10.2 times forward EV/Sales despite growing twice as fast (TSLA is expected to grow revenues by 57% in 2021 compared to NIO's 117%).</p>\n<p><b>Risks</b></p>\n<p>There are many risks associated with owning NIO.</p>\n<p>Although its battery swapping strategy is highly differentiated and seems to be growing rapidly, the jury is still out on the ultimate market share of battery swapping or fast-charging infrastructure. If fast charging technology continues to advance significantly, it will likely erode a key advantage of battery swapping: speed.</p>\n<p>NIO's business model is innovative and new. Unfortunately, the flip side of that is that it is untested, and NIO remains unprofitable. For many investors, NIO will remain a \"show me\" story until the profitability of its business model improves.</p>\n<p>NIO's ability to expand globally may be limited by the rising geopolitical tension between China and the US, and to a lesser extent, with Japan and Europe. The geopolitical situation remains highly opaque and uncertain, and is a risk factor for all auto OEMs.</p>\n<p>Auto OEMs are currently facing a severe chip&nbsp;shortage. In addition, the chip density in automobiles is increasing, making the OEMs increasingly reliant on semiconductor suppliers and foundries.</p>\n<p>NIO's competitive advantages may not overcome the massive scale advantage of ICE OEMs and much bigger EV players like Tesla and China's BYD.</p>\n<p><b>Takeaway</b></p>\n<p>NIO's technical and business model innovations make it a highly differentiated company in the exciting and rapidly growing EV market. In 2021, the company is expected to grow 117% y/y to $5.4 billion.\nThe company is not yet profitable but is expected to be by 2022. Gross margin only turned positive in 2020 and is expected to be 19.3% in 2021. EBITDA is expected to be negative $258 million in 2021 and a positive $206 million in 2022. Free cash flow is expected to be negative $42 million in 2021 before turning to a positive $354 million in 2022.\nHowever, despite the cash burn expected in 2021, investors should feel at ease since the company exited 2020 with $5.9 billion of cash and cash equivalents. Including $600 million in short-term investments and subtracting ~$2.1 billion in debt and operating leases and the expected negative free cash flow in 2021, NIO should exit 2021 with over $4 billion in net cash and investments.
