The next several weeks are poised to showcase strong results compared to last year’s rough first quarter, while guidance hopefully points to an economic boom in the U.S.</p>\n<p>The Wall Street banks from Goldman Sachs GS to JPMorgan JPM already posted blowout Q1 financials and their outlooks were bullish. As of Wednesday morning, Zacks had results from 75 S&amp;P 500 members that reported their results for their three-month periods ended in either February or March, including Nike NKE, <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/ADBE\">Adobe</a> ADBE, Micron MU, and many others.</p>\n<p>Overall earnings jumped 59.2% on 6.1% higher revenue for these 75 firms, with total first quarter 2021 earnings projected to climb 28.1% from the same period last year on 6.3% stronger sales.</p>\n<p>Tuesday saw the first of the so-called FAANG stocks report, with Netflix NFLX posting disappointing subscriber growth, which could be a sign of the continued economic reopening that’s happening in many areas of the U.S (also read: A Very Strong Earnings Picture for Q1 and Beyond).</p>\n<p>The next several weeks will see nearly all of the world’s largest companies report their quarterly results, including Apple AAPL and Microsoft MSFT. The list of titans will also include two e-commerce standouts with vastly different business models: Amazon and Shopify.</p>\n<p>Both stocks are set to report during the last week of April and AMZN and SHOP are both hoping to break out of their respective slumps that have seen them underperform the S&amp;P 500 in the past six months. Now let’s see if investors should consider buying either Amazon or Shopify ahead of their Q1 earnings releases…</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7b3d5bd939ebabdac95dd8fdd8fbd352\" tg-width=\"620\" tg-height=\"354\"><span><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/SHOP\">Shopify Inc</a>. SHOP - Q1 FY21 Financials due Wednesday, April 28</span></p>\n<p>Shopify’s offerings help companies build, maintain, and grow their digital commerce ecosystems. The Canadian e-commerce giant boasts that it powers over 1.7 million businesses in over 175 countries. SHOP makes money from recurring subscription fees and add-ons. The company currently offers different tiers: ranging from new businesses to growing companies with multiple physical retail locations.</p>\n<p>Shopify’s most basic package starts with a monthly fee of $29 for sellers and a 2.9% digital transaction fee. The company’s various offerings and add-ons include reporting, point-of-sales tech, and much more. The company has also continued to partner with heavyweights such as Walmart WMT and <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/FB\">Facebook</a>. And SHOP went on a stellar run long before the coronavirus, having grown its revenue by roughly 50% or higher every year since it went public in 2015.</p>\n<p>The pandemic was clearly a game-changer for SHOP, as businesses and entrepreneurs all raced to start or improve their digital commerce offerings. Shopify’s 2020 revenue climbed 86% to $2.93 billion for its best growth since FY16, while its Gross Merchandise Volume jumped 96% to $120 billion. The company also blew away our adjusted earnings estimate in the trailing four quarters.</p>\n<p>Shopify’s growth within the booming e-commerce world sent it stock price soaring. The stock has now climbed 3,500% in the last five years, including a 400% run in the past 24 months. Yet, as we touched on earlier, Shopify shares have cooled off, up only 13% in the last six months. This lags the S&amp;P 500’s 22% climb and highlights the return of the cyclical trade that began after the election and the early coronavirus vaccine news in November.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/bdedcee8f131d3decb2ce4a33dfb8d53\" tg-width=\"620\" tg-height=\"335\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>The recent underperformance appeared due and SHOP still hit new records during this stretch. The stock closed regular trading Wednesday 24% below its mid-February records at $1,142 a share. The recent downturn has also cooled down its valuation, with it now trading around 20% below its year-long median at 31X forward 12-month sales. And the stock sits below neutral RSI levels (50) at 47, which could give it runway.</p>\n<p>Zacks estimates call for SHOP’s adjusted first quarter earnings to soar 310% to $0.78 a share on 79% higher revenue. Peeking further ahead, the e-commerce firm’s fiscal 2021 sales are projected to climb 36%, from $2.9 billion to $4.0 billion, with FY22 set to climb another 34% higher to $5.3 billion.</p>\n<p>These estimates mark a slowdown in terms of percentage change, but that is simply how it works when the numbers get larger. A better way to understand Shopify’s impressive growth outlook is to understand that it’s expected to make $1.1 billion more in 2021 then in did last year, and it pulled in a total of $1.1 billion in 2018.</p>\n<p>Shopify’s overall earnings outlook has improved since its last report and it lands a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) at the moment, along with an “A” grade for Growth in our Style Scores system. Therefore, some investors might want to consider Shopify down around 24% from its highs, especially since e-commerce still has miles of room left to grow. For example, e-commerce accounted for 14% of total U.S. retail sales last year, up from 11% in 2019, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.</p>\n<p><b>Amazon AMZN - </b><i>Q1 FY21 Financials due Thursday, April 29</i></p>\n<p>Amazon has been in the news a ton recently and has come under attack from various groups and both sides of the political aisle. But that’s what happens when a company becomes <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> of the largest private employers in the U.S. and the world. Amazon has come under scrutiny in Washington for some of its practices, including how it treats other retailers and third-party sellers on a platform it controls.</p>\n<p>AMZN CEO Jeff Bezos, who is set to transition out of the role, has pointed out that other retailers, including the likes of Target TGT also sell their own products that compete against other brands in stores and online. More importantly, the company is sure to fight back against any real legal action that might be taken. And the stock has popped 10% since the end of March, as Wall Street shrugs off any worries.</p>\n<p>The Seattle giant was built for the coronavirus environment and it’s ready to thrive for years to come through growing market-share in retail and beyond. The company’s AWS cloud computing unit was already booming before the pandemic spurred businesses to speed up their digitalization and remote capabilities. The company is also now the third-largest digital advertising player behind Google GOOGL and Facebook FB.</p>\n<p>Amazon is expanding its own brick-and-mortar efforts given that e-commerce still accounts for a small amount of total retail sales in the U.S., as we mentioned earlier with Shopify. The company also continued to rake in money from its Prime-heavy subscription unit, as it also aims to compete against Netflix, Spotify SPOT, and others.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8c05fff167da337163ca28fd1a598d70\" tg-width=\"620\" tg-height=\"137\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>AMZN’s sales climbed 38% to a whopping $386 billion in 2020, for its strongest top-line growth since 2011’s 40% jump. Zacks estimates call for its first quarter revenue to jump over 39% to help lift its adjusted earnings by 99%. SHOP - Q1 FY21 Financials due Wednesday, April 28\nShopify’s offerings help companies build, maintain, and grow their digital commerce ecosystems. The Canadian e-commerce giant boasts that it powers over 1.7 million businesses in over 175 countries. SHOP makes money from recurring subscription fees and add-ons. The company currently offers different tiers: ranging from new businesses to growing companies with multiple physical retail locations.\nShopify’s most basic package starts with a monthly fee of $29 for sellers and a 2.9% digital transaction fee. The company’s various offerings and add-ons include reporting, point-of-sales tech, and much more. The company has also continued to partner with heavyweights such as Walmart WMT and Facebook. And SHOP went on a stellar run long before the coronavirus, having grown its revenue by roughly 50% or higher every year since it went public in 2015.\nThe pandemic was clearly a game-changer for SHOP, as businesses and entrepreneurs all raced to start or improve their digital commerce offerings. This lags the S&P 500’s 22% climb and highlights the return of the cyclical trade that began after the election and the early coronavirus vaccine news in November.\n\nThe recent underperformance appeared due and SHOP still hit new records during this stretch. The stock closed regular trading Wednesday 24% below its mid-February records at $1,142 a share. It's important to remember that stocks are more attractive investments at lower prices than they are at higher prices, assuming everything else about a business' long-term prospects is unchanged -- and for Netflix, Pinterest, and Square, this seems to be the case.</p>\n<p>All three of these companies are firing on all cylinders as the economy reopens. Consider their fourth-quarter results. Square's fourth-quarter revenue increased 23% year over year when excluding Bitcoin revenue. Its gross profit surged 54% year over year to $804 million.</p>\n<p>Netflix's fourth-quarter revenue increased 21.5% year over year as streaming members reached 204 million -- up from 167 million in the fourth quarter of 2019. Finally, Pinterest's fourth-quarter revenue skyrocketed 76% year over year as monthly active users jumped 37% year over year to 459 million.</p>\n<p>Looking ahead, analysts expect more strong double-digit top-line growth from all three of these companies in 2021. The&nbsp;Invesco QQQ ETF(QQQ), which tracks the 100 largest stocks in the Nasdaq, was down 3%.</p><p>The Dow-Nasdaq performance illustrates what’s going on with shares of Tesla, the electric vehicle pioneer, as well as tradition automakers General Motors (GM) andFordMotor (F).</p><p>The Nasdaq is a market-capitalization weighted index. A handful of big tech names, including Tesla, make up about 40% of the index. The Dow, on the other hand, is weighted by stock price--UnitedHealth(UNH),Boeing(BA),Amgen(AMGN),Goldman Sachs(GS) and&nbsp;Home Depot(HD) are its biggest weightings.</p><p>Higher interest rates hurt growth stocks more than others for two reasons. First, high-growth companies typically need new capital to finance growth, and higher interest rates makes that more expensive. Second, higher-growth companies generate most of their free cash flow far in the future, which is worth less--relatively speaking--than cash generated right now by more mature companies.</p><p>The U.S. 10-year Treasury Bond yield rose higher than 1.7% Thursday, up from 1.3% about a month ago. The rise is playing havoc on EV stock prices. Tesla shares are down about 15% over the past month.NIO&nbsp;(NIO) stock is down 22%. And&nbsp;XPeng&nbsp;(XPEV) stock is off by about 13%.</p><p>Higher rates haven’thurt traditional auto maker stocks--at all. General Motors shares are up about 14% over the past month. Ford shares have gained 10%.</p><p>Higher rates also help GM and Ford because of their large pension obligations.</p><p>GM and Ford pensions, on a combined bases, are about $20 billion underfunded. They have promised pension payments to employees that are worth roughly $175 billion. The two have set aside assets to pay worth about $155 billion.</p><p>That’s a lot of money, but pension deficits are helped by rising rates.</p><p>Pension obligations are a stream of cash flows paid far into the future. There’s no maturity date, like with a bond, when the company owes a large fixed amount. In addition, regulators require companies to discount the pension obligations at low rates of interest. Here’s the logic: The cash should be discounted at a government bond yield because that rate will determine the size of the cash pile needed if all the pension assets were invested in those government bonds.</p><p>When interest rates are low, the cash pile needs to be huge. Consider, the 10-year treasury bond yield is about 1.6%, and GM and Ford pay out roughly $10 billion in pension benefits combined. If they bought 10-year bonds to make the payments, they would need $630 billion to pay obligations using just the interest on those bonds. But if government bonds yielded 5%, the cash pile would need to be only $200 billion.</p><p>However, the auto makers, and other companies with pension obligations, invest pension assets in stocks and corporate bonds and have earned much more than government bond yields historically. In that way, the pension deficit is always overstated. Ford shares have gained 10%.Higher rates also help GM and Ford because of their large pension obligations.GM and Ford pensions, on a combined bases, are about $20 billion underfunded. They have promised pension payments to employees that are worth roughly $175 billion. The two have set aside assets to pay worth about $155 billion.That’s a lot of money, but pension deficits are helped by rising rates.Pension obligations are a stream of cash flows paid far into the future. There’s no maturity date, like with a bond, when the company owes a large fixed amount. In addition, regulators require companies to discount the pension obligations at low rates of interest. Here’s the logic: The cash should be discounted at a government bond yield because that rate will determine the size of the cash pile needed if all the pension assets were invested in those government bonds.When interest rates are low, the cash pile needs to be huge. Consider, the 10-year treasury bond yield is about 1.6%, and GM and Ford pay out roughly $10 billion in pension benefits combined. If they bought 10-year bonds to make the payments, they would need $630 billion to pay obligations using just the interest on those bonds. But if government bonds yielded 5%, the cash pile would need to be only $200 billion.However, the auto makers, and other companies with pension obligations, invest pension assets in stocks and corporate bonds and have earned much more than government bond yields historically.
