The large-cap benchmark is down 21.1% from its record finish on Jan. 3. The index earlier this month first ended more than 20% below that early January record, confirming that the pandemic bull market -- as widely defined -- had ended on Jan. 3, marking the start of a bear.</p><p>The S&amp;P 500 has bounced around 3.2% off its 2022 low close of 3,666.77 set on June 16.</p><p>Read:These 10 stocks in the S&amp;P 500 have lost $4.1 trillion of investors&#39; money during the first half of 2022</p><p>Data compiled by Dow Jones Market Data shows that the S&amp;P 500 has bounced back after past first-half falls of 15% or more. The sample size, however, is small, with only five instances going back to 1932 (see table below).</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/35eaa5fc92d1e15ba08af1ec94393bc4\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"445\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/>The S&amp;P 500 did rise in each of those instances, with an average rise of 23.66% and a median rise of 15.25%.</p><p>Investors, however, may also want to pay attention to metrics around bear markets, particularly with the will-it-or-won&#39;t-it speculation around whether the Federal Reserve&#39;s aggressive tightening agenda will sink the economy into recession.</p><p>Indeed, an analysis by Wells Fargo Investment Institute found that recessions accompanied by a recession, on average, lasted 20 months and produced a negative 37.8% return. Bear markets outside a recession lasted 6 months on average -- nearly the length of the current episode -- and saw an average return of -28.9%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average  fell 15.3% through Thursday, its worst first half since a 23.2% drop in 1962.</p><p>As the table below shows, the second-half performance for the blue-chip gauge after first-half declines of 10% or more are variable. The most recent incident, in 2008 during the worst of the financial crisis, saw the Dow drop another 22.68% in the second half of the year.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a201b68c690ea36110bd9080287089b9\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"915\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/>In the 15 instances, the Dow rallied in the second half two-thirds of the time, producing an average second-half rise of 4.45% and a median gain just shy of 7%.</p><p>The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite  dropped more than 29% for the first half, its largest such drop on record. The bearish reading was the sixth highest since the survey started in 1987. At the beginning of June, just 37% were bearish while 32% remained bullish.</p><p>The fear of a lower market is largely due to anticipations of weaker earnings in the coming months. According to Bank of America’s global fund manager survey in June, 72% of investors expect global profits to worsen over the next 12 months, up 6 percentage points from May and the highest level since September 2008. Investors are telling companies to “play it safe” and strengthen their balance sheets, rather than increase capital expenditure or deliver share buybacks.</p><p>“The bear market will not be over until recession arrives or the risk of one is extinguished,” wrote Morgan Stanley chief U.S. equity strategist Mike Wilson last week. A full-fledged recession could push the S&amp;P 500 to bottom near 2900, or more than 23% below its current level, according to Wilson.</p><p>Other Wall Street giants have similar expectations. Goldman Sachs strategists said stocks are only pricing in a modest recession, leaving them open to a further worsening in expectations. Bank of America said the S&amp;P 500 could bottom as low as 3000 in a worst-case scenario.</p><p>If there is any silver lining to these dim expectations, it’s worth noting that investor sentiment is often a contrarian indicator. Historically, unusually bearish sentiment—a sign of fearand cautious behaviors—tends to be followed by above-average market returns, while overly bullish sentiment—a sign of greed and risk taking—is often followed by below-average returns.</p><p>Indeed, during previous years when the S&amp;P 500 was down at least 15% at the midway point of the year, the index has finished higher in the final six months every single time, with an average return of nearly 24%. “Although most investors probably don’t feel like that is possible in 2022, just remember history says a surprise bullish move is possible,” wrote LPL Financial chief market strategist Ryan Detrick last week.</p><p>Citianalysts, for one, believe the second half of the year could bring “low double digit upside” gains in the S&amp;P 500. The market has mostly priced in the Fed’s planned rate hikes and their effects on stock valuations, wrote the analysts in a research note last week. Ford is a legacy auto maker that is working to catch up and eventually make a full transition to electric vehicles. Shares of Nio have more than tripled in the past year, while Ford's have almost doubled after cratering in the previous decade.</p>\n<p>So where does Nio <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/NIO\">$(NIO)$</a>, which reported second-quarter results after the stock market closes Wednesday, fit in an investment thesis? Below are screens showing how its stock valuation compares to vehicle production, and how that valuation relates to projected earnings through 2025.</p>\n<p><b>Doubling car production</b></p>\n<p>For the second quarter, Nio delivered 21,896 vehicles for a 112% increase from a year earlier. Most don't break out electric vehicle sales.</p>\n<p>Among those that do, definitions vary. For example, Toyota Motor Corp. (7203.TO) reported that \"electrified vehicle\" sales made up 26.6% of total auto sales during the second quarter. But that category includes:</p>\n<p>For Toyota, BEV made up only 0.2% of second-quarter sales, while they accounted for 100% of sales for Nio and Tesla. Toyota's PHEV sales made up 1.4% of the total.</p>\n<p>Volkswagen AG reports electric-vehicle sales as including PHEV, which accounted for 6.7% of second-quarter sales, or BEV, which made up 4.4% of total sales. Those are impressive numbers: a combined 11.1%.</p>\n<p>For Bayerische Motoren Werke Aktiengesellschaft , better known as BWM Group, a second-quarter breakdown of electric-vehicle deliveries isn't yet available, but for the first half of 2021, 153,243 all-electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles were delivered, or 11.4% of total deliveries.</p>\n<p><b>Valuation to earnings estimates</b></p>\n<p>For companies at early stages, comparisons of price-to-earnings ratios may not mean very much. Such companies are focusing on growth rather than profits. An example of this has been Amazon.com Inc. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AMZN\">$(AMZN)$</a>, which has traded at a high P/E for decades as it has worked to expand into new lines of business, at the expense of the bottom line.</p>\n<p>A high P/E ratio can reflect investors' enthusiasm for innovation and in the case of EVs, a political consensus for transforming the industry. So Nio and Tesla trade at much higher P/E ratios than the legacy auto makers.</p>\n<p>Then again, very low P/E may show too much contempt among investors for the older manufacturers, as they use their cash flow from continuing massive sales of traditional vehicles to fund their development of EVs. Investor Vance Howard thinks he’s found it.</p>\n<p>Howard and his small army of computer programmers atHoward Capital Managementin Roswell, Ga., have a quantitative system that posts great returns.</p>\n<p>His HCM Tactical Growth Fund&nbsp;HCMGX,+0.35%beats its Russell 1000&nbsp;benchmark index and large-blend fund category by 8.5-10.4 percentage points annualized over the past five years, according to Morningstar. That is no small feat, and not only because it has to overcome a 2.22% fee. Beating the market is simply not easy. His HCM Dividend Sector PlusHCMQX,-0.05%) and HCM Income PlusHCMLX,+0.30%funds post similar outperformance.</p>\n<p>There are drawbacks, which I detail below. (Among them: Potentially long stretches of underperformance and regular tax bills.) But first, what can we learn from this winner?</p>\n<p>So-called quants never share all the details of their proprietary systems, but Howard shares a lot, as you’ll see. And this Texas rancher has a lot of good advice based on “horse sense” — not surprising, given his infectious passion for the markets, and his three decades of experience as a pro.</p>\n<p>Here are five lessons, 12 exchange traded funds (ETFs) and four stocks to consider, from a recent interview with him.</p>\n<p><b>Lesson #1: Don’t be emotional</b></p>\n<p>It’s no surprise so many people do poorly in the market. Evolution has programmed us to fail. For survival, we’ve learned to run from things that frightens us. And crave more of things that are pleasurable — like sweets or fats to store calories ahead of what might be a long stretch without food. But in the market, acting on the emotions of fear and greed invariably make us do the wrong thing at the wrong time. Sell at the bottom, buy at the top.</p>\n<p>Likewise, we’re programmed to believe being with the crowd brings safety. If you’re a zebra on the Savanna, you are more likely to get picked off by a predator if you go it alone. The problem here is being part of a crowd — and crowd psychology — dumb us down to a purely emotional level. This is why people in crowds do terrible things they would never do on their own. It doesn’t matter how smart you are. When you join a crowd, you lose a lot of IQ points. Base emotions take over.</p>\n<p>To do well in the market, you have to counteract these tendencies. “One of the biggest mistakes individual investors and money managers make is getting emotional,” says Howard. “Let your emotions go.”</p>\n<p><b>Lesson #2: Have a system and stick to it</b></p>\n<p>To exorcise emotion, have a system. “And don’t second guess it,” says Howard. “This keeps you from letting the pandemic or Afghanistan scare you out of the market.” He calls his system the HCM-BuyLine. It is basically a momentum and trend-following system — which often works well in the markets.</p>\n<p>The HCM-BuyLine basically works like this. First, rather than use the S&amp;P 500SPX,-0.03%or the Dow Jones Industrial AverageDJIA,-0.21%,Howard blends several stock indices to create his own index. Then he uses a moving average that tells him whether the market is in an uptrend or downtrend.</p>\n<p>When the moving average drops 3.5%, he sells 35%. If it drops 6.5%, he sells another 35%. He rarely goes to 100% cash.</p>\n<p>“If the BuyLine is positive, we will stay long no matter what,” he says. “We take all the emotion out of the equation by letting the math decide.”</p>\n<p>Right now, it’s bullish. (More on this below.)</p>\n<p>Your system also has to tell you when to get back in.</p>\n<p>“That’s where most people screw up,” he says. “They get out of the market, and they don’t know when to get back in.” The HCM-BuyLine gives a buy signal when his custom index trades above its moving average for six consecutive sessions, and then goes on to trade above the high hit during those six days.</p>\n<p>You don’t need a system that calls exact market tops or bottoms. Instead, the BuyLine keeps Howard out of down markets 85% of the time, and in for 85% of the good times.</p>\n<p>“If we can do that consistently, we have superior returns and a less stressful life,” he says. “Being all in during a bad tape is no fun.”</p>\n<p>His system is slow to get him out of the market, but quick to get him back in. Not even a 10% correction will necessarily move him out. He’s often buying those pullbacks. Getting back in fast makes sense, because recoveries off bottoms tend to happen fast.</p>\n<p>“The HCM-BuyLine takes all the emotion out of the process,” says Howard.</p>\n<p><b>Lesson #3: Don’t fight the tape</b></p>\n<p>This concept is one of the core pieces of wisdom from Marty Zweig’s classic book, “Winning on Wall Street.”</p>\n<p>“You have to stay on the right side of market,” agrees Howard. “If you try to trade long in a bad market, it is painful.”</p>\n<p>In other words, don’t try to be a hero.</p>\n<p>“Sometimes, not losing money is where you want to be,” he says.</p>\n<p>Likewise, don’t turn cautious just because the market hits new highs — like now. You should love new highs, because it is a sign of market strength that may likely endure.</p>\n<p><b>Lesson #4: Keep it simple</b></p>\n<p>As you’ll see below, Howard doesn’t use esoteric instruments such as derivatives, swaps or index options. He doesn’t even trade foreign stocks or currencies. This is refreshing for individual investors, because we have a harder time accessing those tools.</p>\n<p>“You don’t have to trade crazy stuff,” he says. “You can trade plain-vanilla ETFs and beat everybody out there.”</p>\n<p><b>Lesson #5: How to trade the current market</b></p>\n<p>First, be long.</p>\n<p>“The HCM-BuyLine is very positive. We are 100% in,” says Howard. “The market is broadening out. It is getting pretty exciting. We do not see it turn around any time soon. We are buying pullbacks.”</p>\n<p>One bullish signal is all the cash on the sidelines. “If there is any relief in Covid, we may see a big rally. We may end up with a great fall [season].”</p>\n<p>Howard uses momentum indicators to select stocks and ETFs, too. For sectors he favors the following.</p>\n<p>He likes health care, tradable through the iShares US HealthcareIYH,-0.04%and ProShares Ultra Health CareRXL,+0.12%ETFs. He’s turning more bullish on biotech, which he plays via the iShares Biotechnology ETFIBB,-0.11%.</p>\n<p>He likes consumer discretionary tradable through the iShares US Consumer ServicesIYC,-0.30%,and airlines via US Global JetsJETS,-1.17%.He also likes tech exposure via the Invesco QQQ TrustQQQ,+0.31%,iShares US TechnologyIYW,+0.50%and&nbsp;iShares SemiconductorSOXX,+0.75%.</p>\n<p>He likes small-caps via the Vanguard Small-Cap Growth Index FundVBK,+0.07%.And convertible bonds via SPDR Bloomberg Barclays Convertible SecuritiesCWB,+0.64%and iShares Convertible BondICVT,+0.37%.</p>\n<p>As for individual names, he singles out MicrosoftMSFT,-0.00%and AppleAAPL,+0.42%in tech, as well as Amazon.comAMZN,+0.43%and TeslaTSLA,+0.16%.</p>\n<p>Also consider Howard’s two ETFs: The HCM Defender 100 IndexQQH,+0.62%and HCM Defender 500 IndexLGH,+1.32%.</p>\n<p>He prefers to add to holdings on 1%-3% dips.</p>\n<p><b>A few drawbacks</b></p>\n<p>His HCM Tactical Growth fund has a history of posting two-year stretches of underperformance of 1.5% to 8.8%, since it was launched in 2015. The fund then came roaring back to net the very positive five-year outperformance cited above. Investing in his system can require patience.</p>\n<p>Every manager, including Warren Buffett, can have a stretch of underperformance, says Howard.</p>\n<p>“We are in the odds game,” he says. “Even in the odds game, you can have a bad hand or two thrown at you.”</p>\n<p>Another challenge is the high turnover, which is 140% a year for Tactical Growth. This means Uncle Sam takes a big cut in the good years. Investor Vance Howard thinks he’s found it.\nHoward and his small army of computer programmers atHoward Capital Managementin Roswell, Ga., have a quantitative system that posts great returns.\nHis HCM Tactical Growth Fund HCMGX,+0.35%beats its Russell 1000 benchmark index and large-blend fund category by 8.5-10.4 percentage points annualized over the past five years, according to Morningstar. That is no small feat, and not only because it has to overcome a 2.22% fee. Beating the market is simply not easy. His HCM Dividend Sector PlusHCMQX,-0.05%) and HCM Income PlusHCMLX,+0.30%funds post similar outperformance.\nThere are drawbacks, which I detail below. (Among them: Potentially long stretches of underperformance and regular tax bills.) But first, what can we learn from this winner?\nSo-called quants never share all the details of their proprietary systems, but Howard shares a lot, as you’ll see. And this Texas rancher has a lot of good advice based on “horse sense” — not surprising, given his infectious passion for the markets, and his three decades of experience as a pro.\nHere are five lessons, 12 exchange traded funds (ETFs) and four stocks to consider, from a recent interview with him.\nLesson #1: Don’t be emotional\nIt’s no surprise so many people do poorly in the market. Evolution has programmed us to fail. For survival, we’ve learned to run from things that frightens us. And crave more of things that are pleasurable — like sweets or fats to store calories ahead of what might be a long stretch without food. But in the market, acting on the emotions of fear and greed invariably make us do the wrong thing at the wrong time. Sell at the bottom, buy at the top.\nLikewise, we’re programmed to believe being with the crowd brings safety. If you’re a zebra on the Savanna, you are more likely to get picked off by a predator if you go it alone. The problem here is being part of a crowd — and crowd psychology — dumb us down to a purely emotional level. This is why people in crowds do terrible things they would never do on their own. It doesn’t matter how smart you are. When you join a crowd, you lose a lot of IQ points. Base emotions take over.\nTo do well in the market, you have to counteract these tendencies. “One of the biggest mistakes individual investors and money managers make is getting emotional,” says Howard. “Let your emotions go.”\nLesson #2: Have a system and stick to it\nTo exorcise emotion, have a system. “And don’t second guess it,” says Howard. “This keeps you from letting the pandemic or Afghanistan scare you out of the market.” He calls his system the HCM-BuyLine. It is basically a momentum and trend-following system — which often works well in the markets.\nThe HCM-BuyLine basically works like this. First, rather than use the S&P 500SPX,-0.03%or the Dow Jones Industrial AverageDJIA,-0.21%,Howard blends several stock indices to create his own index. Then he uses a moving average that tells him whether the market is in an uptrend or downtrend.\nWhen the moving average drops 3.5%, he sells 35%. If it drops 6.5%, he sells another 35%. He rarely goes to 100% cash.\n“If the BuyLine is positive, we will stay long no matter what,” he says. “We take all the emotion out of the equation by letting the math decide.”\nRight now, it’s bullish. (More on this below.)\nYour system also has to tell you when to get back in.\n“That’s where most people screw up,” he says. “They get out of the market, and they don’t know when to get back in.” The HCM-BuyLine gives a buy signal when his custom index trades above its moving average for six consecutive sessions, and then goes on to trade above the high hit during those six days.\nYou don’t need a system that calls exact market tops or bottoms. Instead, the BuyLine keeps Howard out of down markets 85% of the time, and in for 85% of the good times.\n“If we can do that consistently, we have superior returns and a less stressful life,” he says. “Being all in during a bad tape is no fun.”\nHis system is slow to get him out of the market, but quick to get him back in. Not even a 10% correction will necessarily move him out. He’s often buying those pullbacks. Getting back in fast makes sense, because recoveries off bottoms tend to happen fast.\n“The HCM-BuyLine takes all the emotion out of the process,” says Howard.\nLesson #3: Don’t fight the tape\nThis concept is one of the core pieces of wisdom from Marty Zweig’s classic book, “Winning on Wall Street.”\n“You have to stay on the right side of market,” agrees Howard. “If you try to trade long in a bad market, it is painful.”\nIn other words, don’t try to be a hero.\n“Sometimes, not losing money is where you want to be,” he says.\nLikewise, don’t turn cautious just because the market hits new highs — like now. You should love new highs, because it is a sign of market strength that may likely endure.\nLesson #4: Keep it simple\nAs you’ll see below, Howard doesn’t use esoteric instruments such as derivatives, swaps or index options. He doesn’t even trade foreign stocks or currencies. This is refreshing for individual investors, because we have a harder time accessing those tools.\n“You don’t have to trade crazy stuff,” he says. “You can trade plain-vanilla ETFs and beat everybody out there.”\nLesson #5: How to trade the current market\nFirst, be long.\n“The HCM-BuyLine is very positive. We are 100% in,” says Howard. “The market is broadening out. It is getting pretty exciting. We do not see it turn around any time soon. We are buying pullbacks.”\nOne bullish signal is all the cash on the sidelines. “If there is any relief in Covid, we may see a big rally. We may end up with a great fall [season].”\nHoward uses momentum indicators to select stocks and ETFs, too. For sectors he favors the following.\nHe likes health care, tradable through the iShares US HealthcareIYH,-0.04%and ProShares Ultra Health CareRXL,+0.12%ETFs. He’s turning more bullish on biotech, which he plays via the iShares Biotechnology ETFIBB,-0.11%.\nHe likes consumer discretionary tradable through the iShares US Consumer ServicesIYC,-0.30%,and airlines via US Global JetsJETS,-1.17%.He also likes tech exposure via the Invesco QQQ TrustQQQ,+0.31%,iShares US TechnologyIYW,+0.50%and iShares SemiconductorSOXX,+0.75%.\nHe likes small-caps via the Vanguard Small-Cap Growth Index FundVBK,+0.07%.And convertible bonds via SPDR Bloomberg Barclays Convertible SecuritiesCWB,+0.64%and iShares Convertible BondICVT,+0.37%.\nAs for individual names, he singles out MicrosoftMSFT,-0.00%and AppleAAPL,+0.42%in tech, as well as Amazon.comAMZN,+0.43%and TeslaTSLA,+0.16%.\nAlso consider Howard’s two ETFs: The HCM Defender 100 IndexQQH,+0.62%and HCM Defender 500 IndexLGH,+1.32%.\nHe prefers to add to holdings on 1%-3% dips.\nA few drawbacks\nHis HCM Tactical Growth fund has a history of posting two-year stretches of underperformance of 1.5% to 8.8%, since it was launched in 2015. The fund then came roaring back to net the very positive five-year outperformance cited above. Investing in his system can require patience.\nEvery manager, including Warren Buffett, can have a stretch of underperformance, says Howard.\n“We are in the odds game,” he says. “Even in the odds game, you can have a bad hand or two thrown at you.”\nAnother challenge is the high turnover, which is 140% a year for Tactical Growth. This means Uncle Sam takes a big cut in the good years. For most of 2021, yet another small biotech has been the top-performing stock in the market, as&nbsp;<b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/SAVA\">Cassava Sciences Inc</a> </b>(NASDAQ:SAVA) jumped from under $7 a share in January to $123 a share on Aug. 24. (Whether it will keep its lead is another question, as the volatility is savage -- the stock is down to $52 as of Friday morning after news of a citizen petition against the company.)</p>\n<p>What's fascinating about the biotech sector in particular is how fast it moves. The sector is notorious for amazing price swings -- in either direction -- that can happen overnight. So why is that? Why are biotech stocks in particular so volatile? Why do they keep leading the market every year? And what biotech stock might -- repeat, <i>might&nbsp;</i>-- pull off this feat next year? Let's analyze why Axsome, Novavax, and Cassava zoomed higher over the last few years, and why I think <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/PIRS\">Pieris Pharmaceuticals</a> </b>(NASDAQ:PIRS) has a chance at a similar remarkable performance in 2022.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/image/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fg.foolcdn.com%2Feditorial%2Fimages%2F638648%2Fgettyimages-108224060.jpg&amp;w=700&amp;op=resize\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"465\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<h2>Biotech winners tend to start off tiny</h2>\n<p>The main reason these stocks were able to soar so impressively is that all three started with very tiny market caps. At the end of 2018, Axsome Therapeutics had a micro-cap valuation of $85 million. In 2019, Novavax stock fell to below $1, and the company had to do a 1-for-20 reverse split in order to keep its shares listed on the <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/NDAQ\">Nasdaq</a></b>. And at the beginning of 2020, Cassava had barely achieved small-cap status, with its market cap hovering at $240 million.</p>\n<p>So all three barn-burning stocks started off unloved by the market. Why does a biotech stock get so cheap? Probably the most common reason is the market believes the company's science is bad. Novavax, for instance, had a notable failure in its quest for a respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine. This clinical trial failure sent investors to the exits and sent the stock down into a crater in 2019, when it plunged to $4 a share (or $0.20 pre-split).</p>\n<p>Yet the market was spectacularly wrong about Novavax. While the company's RSV drug was a failure, Novavax had another drug in clinical trials, a flu vaccine. And this drug was a world-beater. It was flying through clinical trials, and it had defeated the market-leading flu vaccines from <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/SNY\">Sanofi SA</a></b>&nbsp;(NASDAQ:SNY) over and over again.</p>\n<p>In 2019, Novavax had the label of \"bad science,\" but the data for a different drug said otherwise. Sometimes companies with tiny market caps actually have compelling drugs that are performing exceptionally well in clinical trials. If you find such a company, you might want to buy some shares.</p>\n<h2>Is there enough money for a phase 3 trial?</h2>\n<p>That said, it's not enough just to have good science. Nobody is allowed to market their drugs to the public until that science has been validated in clinical trials and approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration -- and clinical trials cost a huge amount of money. Thus, before investing, it's important to determine whether the biotech has enough cash for a phase 3 trial. If the answer is \"no,\" the drug is stalled and won't go anywhere.</p>\n<p>Many unprofitable biotech companies finesse the money issue by collaborating with Big Pharma. When you see such a collaboration, you can have faith that there's enough cash for a phase 3 trial. However, these arrangements also often mean that the bigger pharmaceutical company acquires the rights to the molecule. And that can be like like selling off your future in order to pay the bills today.</p>\n<p>Interestingly, neither Axsome nor Novavax nor Cassava have an active collaboration with any big-pharma leaders. Instead, all three of these companies have elected to own 100% of the rights to their lead molecules. While the median expense for a phase 3 trial is $19 million, the numbers can vary dramatically, depending on how large the patient population is. I'd be nervous if a biotech had less than $100 million in cash (each of these has more). There's no question this independent approach is riskier, but also potentially a lot more rewarding.</p>\n<p>Biotech investors often like to see collaboration with Big Pharma -- it's a validation of the science, and it removes a lot of financial worries for small companies. But if you're chasing big rewards, you might want to look at biotech companies that are still independent (and have enough cash to stay that way).</p>\n<h2>Can Pieris pull off a miracle run in 2022?</h2>\n<p>Pieris stock is very cheap right now, with a $291 million valuation. (You know a stock is cheap when it could have a 10-bagger and still qualify as a small-cap!) Is the stock so cheap because its science is bad?</p>\n<p>It would probably be more accurate to say that Pieris' science is unproven. Like many unprofitable biotechs, Pieris doesn't have a drug in phase 3 trials yet. In fact, we're still waiting on positive phase 2 data. So it's early, and that's a danger sign. The reason Axsome, Novavax, and Cassava all skyrocketed is that all three companies made the journey from unproven drug to pivotal trials very quickly. Pieris is a few years away.</p>\n<p>Another major difference is that Pieris has signed multiple collaborative deals -- with <b>Roche</b>, <b>AstraZeneca</b>, and <b>Seagen</b>, among others. In <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> sense that's good news, because it means that money for clinical trials isn't an issue for the company. Any drugs that work will make it to phase 3 trials and beyond. And all this collaboration adds confidence that the company is on the right track.</p>\n<p>Is Pieris sacrificing its future to pay for its present? In my opinion, no. While AstraZeneca now has rights to the company's asthma drug (its lead molecule), what makes Pieris such an exciting stock is not <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> particular drug, but the company's entire platform. Pieris owns the rights to all the Anticalin proteins, and its library contains more than 100 billion of these new molecules. Anticalins are much smaller than antibodies, and as such can go where antibodies cannot. AstraZeneca paid big bucks for the rights to Pieris' asthma drug because that Anticalin molecule is small enough to go directly to the lung.</p>\n<p>I love the risk/reward equation for Pieris. If the company's drugs actually work -- we'll have data in that regard next year -- the stock will shoot much higher. Under its existing collaboration agreements, Pieris might make up to $9 billion if its Anticalin drugs reach certain milestones.&nbsp;But what will really make the stock take off is if/when other pharmaceutical players start making deals to add some of the company's Anticalin molecules to their pipelines.</p>\n<p>How do you value an entire new class of pharmaceuticals? Well, in 2019, worldwide sales for monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) totaled <i>$163 billion</i>. While the median expense for a phase 3 trial is $19 million, the numbers can vary dramatically, depending on how large the patient population is. I'd be nervous if a biotech had less than $100 million in cash (each of these has more). There's no question this independent approach is riskier, but also potentially a lot more rewarding.\nBiotech investors often like to see collaboration with Big Pharma -- it's a validation of the science, and it removes a lot of financial worries for small companies. But if you're chasing big rewards, you might want to look at biotech companies that are still independent (and have enough cash to stay that way).\nCan Pieris pull off a miracle run in 2022?\nPieris stock is very cheap right now, with a $291 million valuation. (You know a stock is cheap when it could have a 10-bagger and still qualify as a small-cap!) Is the stock so cheap because its science is bad?\nIt would probably be more accurate to say that Pieris' science is unproven. Like many unprofitable biotechs, Pieris doesn't have a drug in phase 3 trials yet. In fact, we're still waiting on positive phase 2 data. So it's early, and that's a danger sign. The reason Axsome, Novavax, and Cassava all skyrocketed is that all three companies made the journey from unproven drug to pivotal trials very quickly. Pieris is a few years away.\nAnother major difference is that Pieris has signed multiple collaborative deals -- with Roche, AstraZeneca, and Seagen, among others. In one sense that's good news, because it means that money for clinical trials isn't an issue for the company. Any drugs that work will make it to phase 3 trials and beyond. And all this collaboration adds confidence that the company is on the right track.\nIs Pieris sacrificing its future to pay for its present? In my opinion, no. While AstraZeneca now has rights to the company's asthma drug (its lead molecule), what makes Pieris such an exciting stock is not one particular drug, but the company's entire platform. Pieris owns the rights to all the Anticalin proteins, and its library contains more than 100 billion of these new molecules. Anticalins are much smaller than antibodies, and as such can go where antibodies cannot. AstraZeneca paid big bucks for the rights to Pieris' asthma drug because that Anticalin molecule is small enough to go directly to the lung.\nI love the risk/reward equation for Pieris. If the company's drugs actually work -- we'll have data in that regard next year -- the stock will shoot much higher. Under its existing collaboration agreements, Pieris might make up to $9 billion if its Anticalin drugs reach certain milestones. But what will really make the stock take off is if/when other pharmaceutical players start making deals to add some of the company's Anticalin molecules to their pipelines.\nHow do you value an entire new class of pharmaceuticals? Well, in 2019, worldwide sales for monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) totaled $163 billion. The Dow stood less than a percentage point from its Aug. 16 record, mid-afternoon Friday.</p>\n<p>Sifma, the securities-industry trade group for fixed-income, also has recommended the bond market close on Labor Day, including trading in the 10-year Treasury note,which was&nbsp;yielding around 1.33%&nbsp;after the U.S. August jobs report came in weaker than expected.</p>\n<p>However, the&nbsp;Labor Department’s employment report,which showed that&nbsp;235,000 jobs were created in August, far below expectations for more than 700,000, failed to dull expectations among sovereign debt investors for a near-term announcement of tapering of the Fed’s $120 billion in monthly purchases in Treasurys and mortgage-backed securities.</p>\n<p>Trading in most commodity futures, including Nymex crude-oil&nbsp;and Comex gold,on U.S. exchanges will also be halted Monday.</p>\n<p>Is there any significance to the holiday for average investors, besides the time off in the U.S. and the barbecues?</p>\n<p>Probably not.</p>\n<p>But the May Memorial Day to September Labor Day period in recent years has proven a bullish stretch one for investors, according to Dow Jones Market Data. The Dow, for example, is up by about 2% over that period and averages a gain of 1.3%, producing a winning record 65% of the time. The Dow is currently enjoying a win streak, over the past six Memorial Day/Labor Day periods, representing the longest win streak since 1989. Last year, the markets gained nearly 15% over that time.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f3f0f061a4ddd2ca31c53f8aa68e3cce\" tg-width=\"699\" tg-height=\"564\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>DOW JONES MARKET DATA</span></p>\n<p>The S&amp;P 500 is on a similar win streak and is up nearly 8% so far this Memorial Day-Labor Day period. It has risen more than 70% over that period in past years and averages a 1.7% gain. The rally came despite concerns about the spread of the delta variant of the coronavirus and unease about the timetable for an eventual rollback of easy-money policies implemented by the Federal Reserve at the onset of the pandemic last year.\nOn Monday, U.S. stock exchanges, including the Intercontinental Exchange Inc. -owned New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq Inc.,will be closed, so don’t look for any action in individual stocks or indexes including the Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500 or Nasdaq Composite indexes.\nThe S&P 500 has already notched 54 record closing highs in 2021 and was looking for its 55th on Friday, while the Nasdaq Composite was on track to book its 35th all-time high of the year. The Dow stood less than a percentage point from its Aug. 16 record, mid-afternoon Friday.\nSifma, the securities-industry trade group for fixed-income, also has recommended the bond market close on Labor Day, including trading in the 10-year Treasury note,which was yielding around 1.33% after the U.S. August jobs report came in weaker than expected.\nHowever, the Labor Department’s employment report,which showed that 235,000 jobs were created in August, far below expectations for more than 700,000, failed to dull expectations among sovereign debt investors for a near-term announcement of tapering of the Fed’s $120 billion in monthly purchases in Treasurys and mortgage-backed securities.\nTrading in most commodity futures, including Nymex crude-oil and Comex gold,on U.S. exchanges will also be halted Monday.\nIs there any significance to the holiday for average investors, besides the time off in the U.S. and the barbecues?\nProbably not.\nBut the May Memorial Day to September Labor Day period in recent years has proven a bullish stretch one for investors, according to Dow Jones Market Data. The Dow, for example, is up by about 2% over that period and averages a gain of 1.3%, producing a winning record 65% of the time. The Dow is currently enjoying a win streak, over the past six Memorial Day/Labor Day periods, representing the longest win streak since 1989. Last year, the markets gained nearly 15% over that time.\nDOW JONES MARKET DATA\nThe S&P 500 is on a similar win streak and is up nearly 8% so far this Memorial Day-Labor Day period. It has risen more than 70% over that period in past years and averages a 1.7% gain.
