MoviePass is coming back, rising from the dead nearly three years after calling it quits. We still don&#39;t know much about how Movie Pass will work this time, or how it will survive the inescapably bad math that doomed the multiplex subscription service the first time around.</p><p>What we know so far is that the service is expected to debut around Labor Day. A waitlist will launch this Thursday. The service is expected to have three pricing tiers, but we don&#39;t know what will come with the $10, $20, and $30 monthly plans. All movie theaters that accept credit cards for payment will be available for MoviePass-subsidized screenings, so that does mean that members will be able to use it at <b>AMC Entertainment</b>, <b>Cineworld</b>&#39;s Regal, <b>Cinemark</b>, and most other chains.</p><p>Will this be a positive or a negative development for the industry, and AMC in particular? Is the question moot, because it seems highly unlikely that MoviePass can gain traction with anything close to the original model? We&#39;ll have more answers soon, but it doesn&#39;t seem like a model that was doomed to fail a few years ago will fare any better the second time around.</p><h2>Let&#39;s all go to the lobby</h2><p>If you missed the MoviePass mania the first time around, you may as well buckle up for the sequel. MoviePass was a fledgling platform, charging subscribers between $40 and $50 a month for unlimited movie theater screenings. Members had to present their MoviePass -- a physical credit card that would pre-approve charges -- at the box office to purchase tickets.</p><p>The service wasn&#39;t doing so hot, but MoviePass did something crazy in the summer of 2017. It dropped the price to $9.95 a month. The price cut turned heads. MoviePass would go from 20,000 members to 3.2 million at its peak a year later. All the movies you can watch for less than $10 a month? It was a deal that sounded too good to be true, because, well, it was.</p><p>MoviePass was paying retail for its tickets, and that meant that it was typically in the hole the moment a member bought a single ticket. MoviePass was hoping to scale to the point where it could negotiate ticket discounts from the multiplex operators or a cut of the concession stand sales, but the major players never flinched. If anything, they taunted MoviePass. AMC Entertainment once mentioned in an earnings call that it was collecting an average of $12.02 per ticket from MoviePass buyers, when its own average price was $9.78. Customers didn&#39;t seem to care about going for cheaper matinees or exploring discounts when they were on MoviePass&#39; plastic.</p><p>The model was doomed. What do you think consumers will get for a monthly subscription of $10, $20, or $30 today? If it&#39;s something along the lines of a single monthly movie for the $10 plan, three for $20, and six for $30, that won&#39;t be aggressive enough to make a difference. Offering more than that will just be a matter of counting the days until it bleeds out.</p><p>The MoviePass model was popular but a financial flop. It&#39;s not likely to repeat its mistakes, especially now when movie theater prices are quite a bit higher than before. Let&#39;s say that the $30 monthly plan offers unlimited daily screenings -- and it might -- do you think the people going for that will see just two or fewer films a month?</p><p>MoviePass had dreams of monetizing its large audience by selling consumption data and ad targeting, but who would be buying? Studios know their audiences. Theater chains now have their own platforms like AMC Stubs A-List, Regal Unlimited, and Cinemark Movie Club. Folks pay $20 to $22 a month for AMC&#39;s plan that lets its members catch up to three movies a week, and unlike MoviePass, the chains know they can score high-margin concession sales from every subsidized admission.</p><p>The original MoviePass failed for very good reasons. The math never made sense. Movie theater stocks saw it as a pest and an enemy, one that may have filled seats but also devalued the value proposition of going to the movies. It&#39;s not a surprise that box office receipts declined the year that MoviePass went out of business. Multiplex operators are finally starting to stage a comeback. We still don't know much about how Movie Pass will work this time, or how it will survive the inescapably bad math that doomed the multiplex subscription service the first time around.What we know so far is that the service is expected to debut around Labor Day. A waitlist will launch this Thursday. The service is expected to have three pricing tiers, but we don't know what will come with the $10, $20, and $30 monthly plans. All movie theaters that accept credit cards for payment will be available for MoviePass-subsidized screenings, so that does mean that members will be able to use it at AMC Entertainment, Cineworld's Regal, Cinemark, and most other chains.Will this be a positive or a negative development for the industry, and AMC in particular? Is the question moot, because it seems highly unlikely that MoviePass can gain traction with anything close to the original model? We'll have more answers soon, but it doesn't seem like a model that was doomed to fail a few years ago will fare any better the second time around.Let's all go to the lobbyIf you missed the MoviePass mania the first time around, you may as well buckle up for the sequel. MoviePass was a fledgling platform, charging subscribers between $40 and $50 a month for unlimited movie theater screenings. Members had to present their MoviePass -- a physical credit card that would pre-approve charges -- at the box office to purchase tickets.The service wasn't doing so hot, but MoviePass did something crazy in the summer of 2017. It dropped the price to $9.95 a month. The price cut turned heads. MoviePass would go from 20,000 members to 3.2 million at its peak a year later. All the movies you can watch for less than $10 a month? It was a deal that sounded too good to be true, because, well, it was.MoviePass was paying retail for its tickets, and that meant that it was typically in the hole the moment a member bought a single ticket. MoviePass was hoping to scale to the point where it could negotiate ticket discounts from the multiplex operators or a cut of the concession stand sales, but the major players never flinched. If anything, they taunted MoviePass. AMC Entertainment once mentioned in an earnings call that it was collecting an average of $12.02 per ticket from MoviePass buyers, when its own average price was $9.78. Customers didn't seem to care about going for cheaper matinees or exploring discounts when they were on MoviePass' plastic.The model was doomed. What do you think consumers will get for a monthly subscription of $10, $20, or $30 today? If it's something along the lines of a single monthly movie for the $10 plan, three for $20, and six for $30, that won't be aggressive enough to make a difference. Offering more than that will just be a matter of counting the days until it bleeds out.The MoviePass model was popular but a financial flop. It's not likely to repeat its mistakes, especially now when movie theater prices are quite a bit higher than before. Let's say that the $30 monthly plan offers unlimited daily screenings -- and it might -- do you think the people going for that will see just two or fewer films a month?MoviePass had dreams of monetizing its large audience by selling consumption data and ad targeting, but who would be buying? Studios know their audiences. Theater chains now have their own platforms like AMC Stubs A-List, Regal Unlimited, and Cinemark Movie Club. Folks pay $20 to $22 a month for AMC's plan that lets its members catch up to three movies a week, and unlike MoviePass, the chains know they can score high-margin concession sales from every subsidized admission.The original MoviePass failed for very good reasons. The math never made sense. Movie theater stocks saw it as a pest and an enemy, one that may have filled seats but also devalued the value proposition of going to the movies. That being said, the overall economy appears relatively stable or resilient with room to emerge out of this rough patch. The bigger point here is that Q2 is history with an understanding that stocks are forward-looking. From a macro perspective, the scenario we see playing out is the soft landing.</p><p>Briefly, our take on the 0.9% decline in the Q2 GDP is to keep in mind that the economy was historically strong in 2021, growing by a massive 5.7%, in part fueled by the record stimulus last year. The result left both a tough comparison base and added a layer of volatility beyond the headline-making supply chain disruptions and geopolitical issues that defined the quarter. What&#39;s more positive is the real growth on a 2- and 3-year stacked basis from pre-pandemic levels. It&#39;s also encouraging that the quarter-over-quarter decline narrowed compared to the Q1 trend.</p><p>Other data has been more positive including the low unemployment rate and latest retail sales. In our view, the U.S. consumer as a group has been bruised, but otherwise alive and well.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f471219423737fa34aa6d51422e1f5a0\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"334\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>source: tradingeconomics</span></p><p><b>Peak Inflation and Peak Fed Hawkishness</b></p><p>All indications are that inflation will begin to trend lower which removes one of the main culprits of the recent economic weakness. From there, the latest Fed rate hike likely marked &#34;peak hawkishness&#34; by removing the urgency to get more and more aggressive at future meetings. Inflation, as it relates to a near double-digit annual rate, may very well end up being transitory if we&#39;re allowed to un-retire that word.</p><p>The most positive indication is the sharp drop in gas prices which will directly hit the CPI over the next few months. According to data from &#34;GasBuddy&#34;, the national average for gas prices in the U.S. is down 78 cents from its peak in mid-June and forecast to drop under $4.00 per gallon over the next few weeks. Most commodities are down 10-20% or more from their highs. Furthermore, we can highlight that reports of major retailers moving to discount merchandise to deal with a glut of inventory will also help cool inflation on the goods side. This is important because it plays into both a potential rebound of consumer sentiment and improved economic activity into 2023.</p><p>Investors need to start looking ahead toward the July CPI data release on August 10th. It&#39;s not a stretch to imagine that a cold inflation rate print that day will be read positively and can work as a catalyst for the next leg higher in stocks. The Fed may come into September FOMC with some swagger based on evidence their strategy is working. Call it effective execution, good timing, or just dumb luck; but a combination of inflation expectations trending lower while leading economic indicators rebound higher is a strong setup for risk assets. That&#39;s why we&#39;re bullish.</p><p><b>The Earnings That Really Matter</b></p><p>With Q2 earnings season in full swing, what we&#39;re seeing is that the companies that matter, being the mega-cap leaders, are proving capable of effectively navigating the current environment. The bullish case for the S&amp;P 500 got a lift this week with Amazon.com (AMZN) and Apple Inc. (AAPL) both beating estimates adding some confidence to both economic conditions and the market earnings trajectory.</p><p>The reports from other high-profile names like Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL), Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), and Tesla, Inc. (TSLA) were also positive. Notably, these stocks are among the largest constituents of the S&amp;P 500 which makes the index hard to bet against. With the S&amp;P 500 currently trading at around the index level of 4100, the implied 12-month market forward P/E is 17x, which is below the 5-year average of 18.5x, around 9% higher. The upside here should consider that as macro conditions improve, earnings estimates have room to be revised even higher, making stocks appear even more attractive. Anyone with a short position on stocks or even sitting on the sidelines is likely sweating amid the rally in recent weeks.</p><p>We sense that a large segment of the market is falling for a couple of textbook behavioral biases related to cognitive dissonance. The main concept here is the trap of getting too emotionally attached to the bearish (or bullish) case in stocks for any number of reasons.</p><p>In truth, the allure of being a market bear is tempting. There is just something extra gratifying about shorting a stock and making money while the big wigs on Wall Street have a buy rating. Doom and gloom commentary against the grain always seems to come off as extra smart. Similarly, it&#39;s fair to say that the current political environment is conducive to keeping a cynical view on things. A call against the market may seem like a referendum against the status quo or even a judgment on global Central Banking orthodoxy. It&#39;s understandable, we get it, but it doesn&#39;t work like that. The market doesn&#39;t care about opinions and keeping an open mind is the way to go.</p><p>It&#39;s important to incorporate new information to make more objective decisions to overcome what&#39;s known as conservatism bias. Bears may also be expressing some confirmation bias by only valuing the data points that help reaffirm their pessimistic outlook. The headline of Q2 GDP decline may have fed into a view that the economy is falling apart and stocks will crash lower, but what we say was the S&amp;P 500 surged by over 1% on the report.</p><p><b>What&#39;s Next?</b></p><p>The next test for the S&amp;P 500 will be at the index level of 4,200 corresponding to around $420 in the SPY ETF. Let&#39;s go. We then see SPX retesting 4,500 which is a level it last traded at in mid-April. On the downside, 4,000 is the first level of support while a break under 3,800 or $380 in SPY would be indicative of a more serious deterioration.</p><p>On that point, it&#39;s always worth covering some of the risks. We can bring up the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, which still has the potential to escalate, would force a reassessment of global stability. Energy prices are also a key monitoring point. Is the stock a safe investment right now?</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/image/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fg.foolcdn.com%2Feditorial%2Fimages%2F629366%2Fgettyimages-104187332.jpg&amp;w=700&amp;op=resize\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p><h2>What's behind the hype?</h2><p>During the first quarter of 2021, AMC operated 585 of its domestic theaters at just 15% to 60% capacity, while only 27% of its 133 international ones stayed partly open. People steered clear of packed indoor movie screenings with the coronavirus pandemic still going strong, but that's less of a risk as more of the U.S. population has been vaccinated.</p><p>Hence, investors are betting that AMC's revenue and earnings will experience a massive rebound starting in the second quarter. In 2019, the company generated $5.42 billion from ticket, concessions (food and beverage), and entertainment sales and posted a free cash flow of $84 million.</p><p>But there's more. The pandemic also led to extended production delays, as social distancing can be difficult on a movie set. Many producers also did not want to release completed films in a purely digital format and miss out on lucrative box office revenue.&nbsp;</p><p>There is now a massive backlog of new films from blockbuster franchise properties such as <i>Avatar</i>,&nbsp;<i>Dungeons &amp; Dragons, Ghostbusters, Halloween, Kingsman, The Matrix, Minecraft, Mission: Impossible, </i>and<i> Tomb Raider, </i>as well as several new offerings from the comic book universes of DC and Marvel. They are all scheduled to be released by the end of 2022.</p><p>The schedule is so packed that prominent films like&nbsp;<i>Black Widow</i>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<i>Cinderella&nbsp;</i>are set to hit theaters within two weeks of <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> another in July. Given its sheer size, AMC might even see its box office revenue hit record highs in 2022.</p><h2>Can you count on AMC?</h2><p>Generally speaking, most investors tend to buy on emotion and justify with reason. Now is probably time to look at the latter. When the stock was trading for just $12 last month, it looked pretty undervalued.</p><p>However, things have changed as AMC's market cap has surged to nearly $25 billion. To put things into perspective, the company's market cap was less than <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a>-fifth of that amount in 2016, before streaming services like <b>Netflix</b>&nbsp;gained momentum and took away some of its market share.&nbsp;</p><p>What's more, AMC has $5.4 billion in long-term debt and owes $4.9 billion per year in theater rent. Even in its heyday, the company operated at razor-thin margins. Now its balance sheet looks even worse as liabilities outpace its assets by over $2 billion. For these reasons, it's probably a good time to take profits on the stock and consolidate gains.</p><h2>But watch for its next move</h2><p>Based on the poor fundamentals (and experience with market bubbles), it can be very tempting to see the recent rally as nothing more than a pump-and-dump scheme or a total scam. But there is something that even prudent investors are missing.&nbsp;</p><p>With a $25 billion market cap, AMC only has to issue 22% more shares to raise cash to pay off its entire debt balance. That's right: The company has the potential to do a \"soft reset\" and start afresh. The returns would be immediate, as after closing, it would no longer have to pay $151.5 million per quarter in interest. People steered clear of packed indoor movie screenings with the coronavirus pandemic still going strong, but that's less of a risk as more of the U.S. population has been vaccinated.Hence, investors are betting that AMC's revenue and earnings will experience a massive rebound starting in the second quarter. In 2019, the company generated $5.42 billion from ticket, concessions (food and beverage), and entertainment sales and posted a free cash flow of $84 million.But there's more. The pandemic also led to extended production delays, as social distancing can be difficult on a movie set. Many producers also did not want to release completed films in a purely digital format and miss out on lucrative box office revenue. There is now a massive backlog of new films from blockbuster franchise properties such as Avatar, Dungeons & Dragons, Ghostbusters, Halloween, Kingsman, The Matrix, Minecraft, Mission: Impossible, and Tomb Raider, as well as several new offerings from the comic book universes of DC and Marvel. They are all scheduled to be released by the end of 2022.The schedule is so packed that prominent films like Black Widow and Cinderella are set to hit theaters within two weeks of one another in July. Given its sheer size, AMC might even see its box office revenue hit record highs in 2022.Can you count on AMC?Generally speaking, most investors tend to buy on emotion and justify with reason. Now is probably time to look at the latter. When the stock was trading for just $12 last month, it looked pretty undervalued.However, things have changed as AMC's market cap has surged to nearly $25 billion. To put things into perspective, the company's market cap was less than one-fifth of that amount in 2016, before streaming services like Netflix gained momentum and took away some of its market share. What's more, AMC has $5.4 billion in long-term debt and owes $4.9 billion per year in theater rent. Even in its heyday, the company operated at razor-thin margins. Now its balance sheet looks even worse as liabilities outpace its assets by over $2 billion. For these reasons, it's probably a good time to take profits on the stock and consolidate gains.But watch for its next moveBased on the poor fundamentals (and experience with market bubbles), it can be very tempting to see the recent rally as nothing more than a pump-and-dump scheme or a total scam. But there is something that even prudent investors are missing. With a $25 billion market cap, AMC only has to issue 22% more shares to raise cash to pay off its entire debt balance. That's right: The company has the potential to do a \"soft reset\" and start afresh. The returns would be immediate, as after closing, it would no longer have to pay $151.5 million per quarter in interest. The video game retailer plummeted 27% on Thursday, but it moved nicely higher the other four days of the week -- trimming its weeklong decline to just 6%.</li>\n <li>AMC closed out the week with a 3% gain, following the 83% burst higher the week before. The multiplex operator is benefiting from a surge in box office receipts, but they continue to track at less than half of where the industry was two years ago.</li>\n <li>Finally we have Carnival sinking 2% for the week. Cruise stocks have been buoyant ahead of a return to sailing this month, but we're already seeing COVID-19 cases pop up in the limited number of voyages taking place so far.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>Those three stocks averaged a 1.7% decline for the week. The <b>S&amp;P 500</b> rose by 0.4% in that time, so I won. Right now, I see <b>Royal Caribbean</b>&nbsp;(NYSE:RCL), AMC Entertainment Holdings, and <b>Osprey Bitcoin Trust</b> (OTC:OBTC) as vulnerable investments in the near term. Here's why I think these are three stocks to avoid this week.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/844fa22418b0d6398103c6917b0d7eb3\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"459\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>1. Royal Caribbean</h2>\n<p>This was supposed to be the summer that the cruise industry finally roars back into being, but we're already seeing some choppy waters. Royal Caribbean's <i>Celebrity Millennium</i> became the first major cruise ship available to North American seafarers earlier this month since the industry shut down last March. A few days into the maiden voyage, a pair of passengers contracted the COVID-19 virus.</p>\n<p>There's also an operational standoff in Royal Caribbean's home state of Florida, where the governor is threatening to fine cruise lines for requiring vaccinations of its passengers. It's a Catch-22 for the industry, as the CDC requires at least 95% of a ship's passengers to be fully vaccinated to resume sailings without having to go through a series of costly test cruises.</p>\n<p>Royal Caribbean is my favorite of the three cruise lines as an investment, but it's also held up the best during the lull. With the reopening off to a bumpy start it also makes the stock vulnerable here.</p>\n<h2><b>2. AMC Entertainment</b></h2>\n<p>I'm a fan of a lot that AMC Entertainment has done to get bet better at a time when many of its smaller rivals have been merely walking in place. The country's largest multiplex operator has upped its seat reservations and mobile order tech and carved out a new revenue stream with actively promoted private rentals. The new Investor Connect program is sheer genius, monetizing its newborn attention as a meme stock with millions of retail investors by trying to convert them into customers.</p>\n<p>However, after ballooning its share count north of 500 million -- and the stock still moving higher -- there will eventually be a price to be paid in terms of valuation. AMC Entertainment enters this week with an enterprise value above $35 billion, and sooner or later someone is going to have to pay the tab at the end of the party.</p>\n<p>AMC is doing the right things to stay on top of a declining industry, but it's not enough to justify today's sticker price.&nbsp; This has historically been a low-margin business -- in the low single digits for net margin most years -- despite the markup on concessions. You'll see a year-over-year bounce this year, but we may never return to 2019 as a baseline. Theatrical release windows are being shattered by streaming initiatives. AMC has bloated its debt levels and share count to stay alive, but all of this comes at a price that right now seems too dear to pay.</p>\n<h2>3. Osprey Bitcoin Trust</h2>\n<p>I believe in keeping a small percent of your risk-tolerant portfolio in crypto, but not every vehicle is in the same boat. Osprey Bitcoin Trust offers investors a low-cost way to play the popularity of <b>Bitcoin</b> (CRYPTO:BTC) in a stock exchange-listed vehicle.</p>\n<p>Osprey Bitcoin Trust is a lot smaller than the market's original Bitcoin-owning trust, and it's also trading at an unsustainable premium. Osprey's mark-up to its stake of Bitcoin tokens has been contracting since hitting the market earlier this year, and I was starting to get interested when the premium narrowed to 12% a week ago.</p>\n<p>The mark-up is going the wrong way again. Osprey Bitcoin Trust owns what is currently $12.68 in Bitcoin, but it closed last week at $14.95. The video game retailer plummeted 27% on Thursday, but it moved nicely higher the other four days of the week -- trimming its weeklong decline to just 6%.\nAMC closed out the week with a 3% gain, following the 83% burst higher the week before. The multiplex operator is benefiting from a surge in box office receipts, but they continue to track at less than half of where the industry was two years ago.\nFinally we have Carnival sinking 2% for the week. Cruise stocks have been buoyant ahead of a return to sailing this month, but we're already seeing COVID-19 cases pop up in the limited number of voyages taking place so far.\n\nThose three stocks averaged a 1.7% decline for the week. The S&P 500 rose by 0.4% in that time, so I won. Right now, I see Royal Caribbean (NYSE:RCL), AMC Entertainment Holdings, and Osprey Bitcoin Trust (OTC:OBTC) as vulnerable investments in the near term. Here's why I think these are three stocks to avoid this week.\nImage source: Getty Images.\n1. Royal Caribbean\nThis was supposed to be the summer that the cruise industry finally roars back into being, but we're already seeing some choppy waters. Royal Caribbean's Celebrity Millennium became the first major cruise ship available to North American seafarers earlier this month since the industry shut down last March. A few days into the maiden voyage, a pair of passengers contracted the COVID-19 virus.\nThere's also an operational standoff in Royal Caribbean's home state of Florida, where the governor is threatening to fine cruise lines for requiring vaccinations of its passengers. It's a Catch-22 for the industry, as the CDC requires at least 95% of a ship's passengers to be fully vaccinated to resume sailings without having to go through a series of costly test cruises.\nRoyal Caribbean is my favorite of the three cruise lines as an investment, but it's also held up the best during the lull. With the reopening off to a bumpy start it also makes the stock vulnerable here.\n2. AMC Entertainment\nI'm a fan of a lot that AMC Entertainment has done to get bet better at a time when many of its smaller rivals have been merely walking in place. The country's largest multiplex operator has upped its seat reservations and mobile order tech and carved out a new revenue stream with actively promoted private rentals. The new Investor Connect program is sheer genius, monetizing its newborn attention as a meme stock with millions of retail investors by trying to convert them into customers.\nHowever, after ballooning its share count north of 500 million -- and the stock still moving higher -- there will eventually be a price to be paid in terms of valuation. AMC Entertainment enters this week with an enterprise value above $35 billion, and sooner or later someone is going to have to pay the tab at the end of the party.\nAMC is doing the right things to stay on top of a declining industry, but it's not enough to justify today's sticker price.  This has historically been a low-margin business -- in the low single digits for net margin most years -- despite the markup on concessions. You'll see a year-over-year bounce this year, but we may never return to 2019 as a baseline. Theatrical release windows are being shattered by streaming initiatives. AMC has bloated its debt levels and share count to stay alive, but all of this comes at a price that right now seems too dear to pay.\n3. Osprey Bitcoin Trust\nI believe in keeping a small percent of your risk-tolerant portfolio in crypto, but not every vehicle is in the same boat. Osprey Bitcoin Trust offers investors a low-cost way to play the popularity of Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) in a stock exchange-listed vehicle.\nOsprey Bitcoin Trust is a lot smaller than the market's original Bitcoin-owning trust, and it's also trading at an unsustainable premium. Osprey's mark-up to its stake of Bitcoin tokens has been contracting since hitting the market earlier this year, and I was starting to get interested when the premium narrowed to 12% a week ago.\nThe mark-up is going the wrong way again. Osprey Bitcoin Trust owns what is currently $12.68 in Bitcoin, but it closed last week at $14.95.
