Of course, many people have lost money as these meme stocks skyrocket and then crash and burn in quick succession.</p>\n<p>Here are four of the most popular meme stocks that aren’t worth the hype.</p>\n<ul>\n <li><b>BlackBerry</b>(NYSE:<b><u>BB</u></b>)</li>\n <li><b>Zomedica</b>(NYSEAMERICAN:<b><u>ZOM</u></b>)</li>\n <li><b>Koss</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>KOSS</u></b>)</li>\n <li><b>Churchill Capital IV</b>(NYSE:<b><u>CCIV</u></b>)</li>\n</ul>\n<p><b>Meme Stocks to Avoid: BlackBerry (BB)</b></p>\n<p>It’s been nearly 15 years since BlackBerry was a significant technology company.</p>\n<p>The&nbsp;once-dominant&nbsp;Canadian smartphone manufacturer was knocked off its perch when&nbsp;<b>Apple</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>APPL</u></b>) debuted the iPhone back in 2007.</p>\n<p>As a glut of other competitors entered the market, BlackBerry was forced to abandon smartphones altogether, although it still licenses its name to a small percentage of phones manufactured and sold in Asia.</p>\n<p>Today, BlackBerry has reinvented itself as an enterprise software and the Internet of Things (IoT) company. BlackBerry focuses much of its resources these days on making software for self-driving vehicles.</p>\n<p>However, the reinvention has only been mildly successful. BlackBerry continues to struggle in markets outside its native Canada and the company’s financial results continue to underwhelm investors. At the end of March, BlackBerry reported a$315-million lossfor its fiscal fourth quarter. Revenue for the quarter came in at&nbsp; $210 million, down from $282 million the previous year.</p>\n<p>BB stock has been a disappointment too, barely moving over the past year. However, the stock spiked 237% in January when it briefly became one of the meme stocks and targeted by r/WallStreetBets. The jump was short lived, of course, and today the stock is back down to $8.60 a share, about the same level it was at toward the end of 2020.</p>\n<p>Still, January’s sharp move higher prompted several BlackBerry executives to&nbsp;sell their stock&nbsp;in the company. Other shareholders should do the same.</p>\n<p><b>Zomedica (ZOM)</b></p>\n<p>There’s no question that people love their pets, and that love seems to have only grown stronger during the pandemic as people stayed home with their cats and dogs.</p>\n<p>Just because people love their pets doesn’t mean they should gamble on&nbsp;animal healthcare company Zomedica. In many ways Zomedica is a classic meme stock, the type of unproven, completely speculative bet the WallStreetBets crowd loves to champion and push higher.</p>\n<p>This accounts for why ZOM stock gained 731% between Jan. 4 and Feb. 8 of this year, rising from just $0.35 to a peak of $2.91.</p>\n<p>Make no mistake, there was nothing to justify the move upwards in ZOM stock other than irrational exuberance.</p>\n<p>Consider that Zomedica didn’t earn any revenue in 2020. Zilch. On top of that, Zomedica posted a net loss of nearly $17 million for last year.</p>\n<p>The company has all of its eggs placed in its“Truforma” platform, an animal diagnostic tool that it hopes to sell to veterinarians across the U.S.</p>\n<p>While Zomedica forecasts that the animal diagnostics market could be worth $5.4 billion by 2026, there’s no indication that it will get a large share of that market.</p>\n<p>ZOM stock is currently trading at $1.46 a share, down 50% from its February high. Buyer beware!</p>\n<p><b>Meme Stocks to Avoid:&nbsp;Koss (KOSS)</b></p>\n<p>Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based Koss, which designs and manufactures headphones, has had a wilder ride than most meme stocks this year.</p>\n<p>On Jan. 15, KOSS stock closed the trading day at $2.90 a share. On the 29, the stock finished trading at $64. That’s an increase of 2,107% in a two week span. At one point, the stock hit an intra-day high of $127.45 per share.</p>\n<p>By late February, Koss’ share price had crashed down to $11.90 and today the stock is worth $23.20 a share. The gigantic price moves have gotten Koss labelled as a prototypical meme stock, with critics saying that it has been&nbsp;pumped and dumped&nbsp;several times by the Reddit mob.</p>\n<p>There hasn’t been much to push KOSS stock higher beyond it being targeted on social media. Koss is a completely average company.</p>\n<p>While its headphones are functional and garner generally favourable reviews, the company struggles to compete in the space against titans such as Apple and&nbsp;<b>Sony</b>&nbsp;(NYSE:<b><u>SONY</u></b>),and Koss is far from being a household name: Beats by Dre they ain’t.</p>\n<p>In fact, Koss has been in business since 1958 and even&nbsp;filed for bankruptcy&nbsp;back in 1984. The company has always struggled to maintain market share. It has consistently been a&nbsp;penny stock&nbsp;since the mid-1980s, and there’s no reason to believe that it can maintain its current lofty valuation over the long-term.</p>\n<p><b>Churchill Capital IV (CCIV)</b></p>\n<p>Among special purpose acquisition companies (SPAC), Churchill Capital IV stands out for all the wrong reasons.</p>\n<p>Before the shell company announced the target it planned to merge with and bring public, CCIV stock rose 547% based solely on wild speculation. After cresting at a high of $64.86 on Feb. 18, the stock has&nbsp;come down&nbsp;63% and is now stuck under $25.</p>\n<p>Ironically, the share price crashed after Churchill Capital announced on Feb. 22 that it would merge with&nbsp;electric vehicle maker&nbsp;Lucid Motors, a company that many analysts views as viable competitor to market leader&nbsp;<b>Tesla</b>&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<b><u>TSLA</u></b>).</p>\n<p>The same investors who were keen to pump up CCIV stock seemed equally eager to sell once the Lucid Motors deal was formally announced. A broad rotation out of technology stocks and&nbsp;mounting fatigue&nbsp;over the sheer number of SPAC deals coming to market this year didn’t help matters.</p>\n<p>It remains to be seen if Lucid Motors stock will ultimately be successful once it begins trading under the&nbsp;ticker symbol“LCID” by June 30 of this year, subject to shareholder approval of the deal. Of course, many people have lost money as these meme stocks skyrocket and then crash and burn in quick succession.\nHere are four of the most popular meme stocks that aren’t worth the hype.\n\nBlackBerry(NYSE:BB)\nZomedica(NYSEAMERICAN:ZOM)\nKoss(NASDAQ:KOSS)\nChurchill Capital IV(NYSE:CCIV)\n\nMeme Stocks to Avoid: BlackBerry (BB)\nIt’s been nearly 15 years since BlackBerry was a significant technology company.\nThe once-dominant Canadian smartphone manufacturer was knocked off its perch when Apple(NASDAQ:APPL) debuted the iPhone back in 2007.\nAs a glut of other competitors entered the market, BlackBerry was forced to abandon smartphones altogether, although it still licenses its name to a small percentage of phones manufactured and sold in Asia.\nToday, BlackBerry has reinvented itself as an enterprise software and the Internet of Things (IoT) company. BlackBerry focuses much of its resources these days on making software for self-driving vehicles.\nHowever, the reinvention has only been mildly successful. BlackBerry continues to struggle in markets outside its native Canada and the company’s financial results continue to underwhelm investors. At the end of March, BlackBerry reported a$315-million lossfor its fiscal fourth quarter. Revenue for the quarter came in at  $210 million, down from $282 million the previous year.\nBB stock has been a disappointment too, barely moving over the past year. However, the stock spiked 237% in January when it briefly became one of the meme stocks and targeted by r/WallStreetBets. The jump was short lived, of course, and today the stock is back down to $8.60 a share, about the same level it was at toward the end of 2020.\nStill, January’s sharp move higher prompted several BlackBerry executives to sell their stock in the company. Other shareholders should do the same.\nZomedica (ZOM)\nThere’s no question that people love their pets, and that love seems to have only grown stronger during the pandemic as people stayed home with their cats and dogs.\nJust because people love their pets doesn’t mean they should gamble on animal healthcare company Zomedica. In many ways Zomedica is a classic meme stock, the type of unproven, completely speculative bet the WallStreetBets crowd loves to champion and push higher.\nThis accounts for why ZOM stock gained 731% between Jan. 4 and Feb. 8 of this year, rising from just $0.35 to a peak of $2.91.\nMake no mistake, there was nothing to justify the move upwards in ZOM stock other than irrational exuberance.\nConsider that Zomedica didn’t earn any revenue in 2020. Zilch. On top of that, Zomedica posted a net loss of nearly $17 million for last year.\nThe company has all of its eggs placed in its“Truforma” platform, an animal diagnostic tool that it hopes to sell to veterinarians across the U.S.\nWhile Zomedica forecasts that the animal diagnostics market could be worth $5.4 billion by 2026, there’s no indication that it will get a large share of that market.\nZOM stock is currently trading at $1.46 a share, down 50% from its February high. Of course, many people have lost money as these meme stocks skyrocket and then crash and burn in quick succession.</p>\n<p>Here are four of the most popular meme stocks that aren’t worth the hype.</p>\n<ul>\n <li><b>BlackBerry</b>(NYSE:<b><u>BB</u></b>)</li>\n <li><b>Zomedica</b>(NYSEAMERICAN:<b><u>ZOM</u></b>)</li>\n <li><b>Koss</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>KOSS</u></b>)</li>\n <li><b>Churchill Capital IV</b>(NYSE:<b><u>CCIV</u></b>)</li>\n</ul>\n<p><b>Meme Stocks to Avoid: BlackBerry (BB)</b></p>\n<p>It’s been nearly 15 years since BlackBerry was a significant technology company.</p>\n<p>The&nbsp;once-dominant&nbsp;Canadian smartphone manufacturer was knocked off its perch when&nbsp;<b>Apple</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>APPL</u></b>) debuted the iPhone back in 2007.</p>\n<p>As a glut of other competitors entered the market, BlackBerry was forced to abandon smartphones altogether, although it still licenses its name to a small percentage of phones manufactured and sold in Asia.</p>\n<p>Today, BlackBerry has reinvented itself as an enterprise software and the Internet of Things (IoT) company. BlackBerry focuses much of its resources these days on making software for self-driving vehicles.</p>\n<p>However, the reinvention has only been mildly successful. BlackBerry continues to struggle in markets outside its native Canada and the company’s financial results continue to underwhelm investors. At the end of March, BlackBerry reported a$315-million lossfor its fiscal fourth quarter. Revenue for the quarter came in at&nbsp; $210 million, down from $282 million the previous year.</p>\n<p>BB stock has been a disappointment too, barely moving over the past year. However, the stock spiked 237% in January when it briefly became one of the meme stocks and targeted by r/WallStreetBets. The jump was short lived, of course, and today the stock is back down to $8.60 a share, about the same level it was at toward the end of 2020.</p>\n<p>Still, January’s sharp move higher prompted several BlackBerry executives to&nbsp;sell their stock&nbsp;in the company. Other shareholders should do the same.</p>\n<p><b>Zomedica (ZOM)</b></p>\n<p>There’s no question that people love their pets, and that love seems to have only grown stronger during the pandemic as people stayed home with their cats and dogs.</p>\n<p>Just because people love their pets doesn’t mean they should gamble on&nbsp;animal healthcare company Zomedica. In many ways Zomedica is a classic meme stock, the type of unproven, completely speculative bet the WallStreetBets crowd loves to champion and push higher.</p>\n<p>This accounts for why ZOM stock gained 731% between Jan. 4 and Feb. 8 of this year, rising from just $0.35 to a peak of $2.91.</p>\n<p>Make no mistake, there was nothing to justify the move upwards in ZOM stock other than irrational exuberance.</p>\n<p>Consider that Zomedica didn’t earn any revenue in 2020. Zilch. Buyer beware!</p>\n<p><b>Meme Stocks to Avoid:&nbsp;Koss (KOSS)</b></p>\n<p>Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based Koss, which designs and manufactures headphones, has had a wilder ride than most meme stocks this year.</p>\n<p>On Jan. 15, KOSS stock closed the trading day at $2.90 a share. On the 29, the stock finished trading at $64. That’s an increase of 2,107% in a two week span. At one point, the stock hit an intra-day high of $127.45 per share.</p>\n<p>By late February, Koss’ share price had crashed down to $11.90 and today the stock is worth $23.20 a share. The gigantic price moves have gotten Koss labelled as a prototypical meme stock, with critics saying that it has been&nbsp;pumped and dumped&nbsp;several times by the Reddit mob.</p>\n<p>There hasn’t been much to push KOSS stock higher beyond it being targeted on social media. Koss is a completely average company.</p>\n<p>While its headphones are functional and garner generally favourable reviews, the company struggles to compete in the space against titans such as Apple and&nbsp;<b>Sony</b>&nbsp;(NYSE:<b><u>SONY</u></b>),and Koss is far from being a household name: Beats by Dre they ain’t.</p>\n<p>In fact, Koss has been in business since 1958 and even&nbsp;filed for bankruptcy&nbsp;back in 1984. The company has always struggled to maintain market share. It has consistently been a&nbsp;penny stock&nbsp;since the mid-1980s, and there’s no reason to believe that it can maintain its current lofty valuation over the long-term.</p>\n<p><b>Churchill Capital IV (CCIV)</b></p>\n<p>Among special purpose acquisition companies (SPAC), Churchill Capital IV stands out for all the wrong reasons.</p>\n<p>Before the shell company announced the target it planned to merge with and bring public, CCIV stock rose 547% based solely on wild speculation. After cresting at a high of $64.86 on Feb. 18, the stock has&nbsp;come down&nbsp;63% and is now stuck under $25.</p>\n<p>Ironically, the share price crashed after Churchill Capital announced on Feb. 22 that it would merge with&nbsp;electric vehicle maker&nbsp;Lucid Motors, a company that many analysts views as viable competitor to market leader&nbsp;<b>Tesla</b>&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<b><u>TSLA</u></b>).</p>\n<p>The same investors who were keen to pump up CCIV stock seemed equally eager to sell once the Lucid Motors deal was formally announced. A broad rotation out of technology stocks and&nbsp;mounting fatigue&nbsp;over the sheer number of SPAC deals coming to market this year didn’t help matters.</p>\n<p>It remains to be seen if Lucid Motors stock will ultimately be successful once it begins trading under the&nbsp;ticker symbol“LCID” by June 30 of this year, subject to shareholder approval of the deal. Of course, many people have lost money as these meme stocks skyrocket and then crash and burn in quick succession.\nHere are four of the most popular meme stocks that aren’t worth the hype.\n\nBlackBerry(NYSE:BB)\nZomedica(NYSEAMERICAN:ZOM)\nKoss(NASDAQ:KOSS)\nChurchill Capital IV(NYSE:CCIV)\n\nMeme Stocks to Avoid: BlackBerry (BB)\nIt’s been nearly 15 years since BlackBerry was a significant technology company.\nThe once-dominant Canadian smartphone manufacturer was knocked off its perch when Apple(NASDAQ:APPL) debuted the iPhone back in 2007.\nAs a glut of other competitors entered the market, BlackBerry was forced to abandon smartphones altogether, although it still licenses its name to a small percentage of phones manufactured and sold in Asia.\nToday, BlackBerry has reinvented itself as an enterprise software and the Internet of Things (IoT) company. BlackBerry focuses much of its resources these days on making software for self-driving vehicles.\nHowever, the reinvention has only been mildly successful. So far, none of the companies that deploy the equipment has figured out how to make a profit.</p>\n<p>The dilemma boils down to demand, and there’s a certain chicken-and-egg quality to it. Most electric-vehicle drivers charge their cars at home, so many public charging stations get little use. But lots of people still driving gasoline-powered cars won’t consider going electric until they see charging stations widely deployed, for fear that they will run out of juice on the road.</p>\n<p>Speculators are piling into the industry, convinced that boom times are around the corner, while short sellers and other skeptics warn that some of these companies will go belly-up long before they figure out how to make money. Biden’s plan to spend $15 billion to help create 500,000 more public stations by 2030 is feeding the optimism, with investors flocking to EV charging companies since his election. The risk is that the early movers will get badly burned, potentially souring capital markets on the industry for years to come.</p>\n<p>“It’s definitely going to require years of investment before they get any return,” said Chris Nelder, who has studied the economics of charging for the RMI energy research institute.</p>\n<p>Nelder is sure that electric-vehicle charging will eventually be profitable. But when that tipping point will arrive is <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> of the biggest questions hanging over charging companies.</p>\n<p>A decade into its existence, the industry is still hunting for a winning business model. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TWOA.U\">Two</a> of the more established names, <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/BLNKW\">Blink Charging Co.</a> and <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/BEEM\">Beam Global</a>, made less than $10 million in revenue last year. That didn’t stop investors from sending Blink shares up more than 500% after Biden’s November win, and while it has come well off its peak the company’s market valuation is still north of $1.6 billion. Beam jumped more than 300%, though it has lost about half its value this year.</p>\n<p>The biggest U.S. company, <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CHPT\">ChargePoint Holdings Inc.</a>, just went public via a special purpose acquisition company, or SPAC, and others including EVgo Services and Volta Industries Inc. are poised to follow.</p>\n<p>Fueling cars and trucks has always been a low-margin business, with gasoline stations making much of their money from selling snacks, coffee and cigarettes. The business is even tougher when it comes to EVs. Unless they live in dense cities like New York or San Francisco, drivers do the vast majority of charging at home -- their garage is their gas station. They use public chargers infrequently, with most vehicles offering more than enough range to complete daily errands without a topoff. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that 80% of EV charging happens at home.</p>\n<p>Another vexing issue is the nature of using parking spots to double as charging locations. If a customer pulls into a space in her apartment complex at 9 p.m. and hooks up to buy a few dollars’ worth of electricity, more often than not, she’ll leave her car there until going to work the next day. No <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> else can use that charger for the next 10 hours, regardless of when her car is done charging.</p>\n<p>Then there is the relatively small number of vehicles involved. Americans bought 259,000 new electric cars last year, a record according to BloombergNEF, but it’s still just 2% of total car and truck sales. And of those new EVs, 79% were made by Tesla Inc., which has its own branded network of “superchargers” that can’t be used by any other electric car.</p>\n<p>Tesla drivers are “close-looped into the Tesla network,” said BNEF analyst Ryan Fisher. “Where is the demand to plug into these other networks? It doesn’t exist.”</p>\n<p>The Biden administration hopes it can boost some of that demand with the proposed spending, part of its infrastructure plan now before Congress. Some of the money would go toward grants and incentive programs to install chargers, according to a fact sheet from the White House, and some would go toward research into lowering the cost of the chargers themselves.</p>\n<p>The charging companies are positioning themselves for profitability in different ways.</p>\n<p>ChargePoint sells stations and offers various degrees of operational support, but doesn’t get paid from the charging itself. A typical client might be a Silicon Valley company that offers its employees free charging at work as a perk. If a particular station gets little use, ChargePoint still gets paid.</p>\n<p>“I wouldn’t want a driver as a customer, because I think I’d starve to death,” said Pasquale Romano, ChargePoint’s chief executive officer, in an interview. “There’s not a lot of money in electricity.”</p>\n<p>Other companies, like EVgo, own the chargers they deploy and make money each time they’re used.</p>\n<p>Blink, meanwhile, takes both approaches at once. The company prefers to own and operate as many of its stations as possible, but if a property owner wants to buy the chargers from Blink outright, that’s fine, too. The biggest priority is locking up good sites in high-demand areas, according to CEO Michael Farkas.</p>\n<p>“Right now, this is a land grab,” Farkas said in an interview. “For us this is about getting as many locations as we can, and we’ll deal with profitability later.”</p>\n<p>Volta Industries, which plans to go public in a SPAC deal this year, adds advertising to the mix. Its chargers come with 55-inch digital screens. A grocery store can place chargers in its parking lot and bombard customers with ads for specific products inside.</p>\n<p>Beam Global offers a self-contained unit with a canopy of solar cells powering a battery and a charger. It doesn’t require digging up the parking lot to install a power line. “You can tell the world you’re driving on sunshine for free,” CEO Desmond Wheatley said in an interview.</p>\n<p>There’s good reason for Beam to focus on easy installation and self-generated power. The time and cost to install a grid-connected charging station can be significant, often involving construction permits and hooking up to the local utility. The equipment itself can range from less than $2,000 for a slower, basic charger to more than $100,000 for the most powerful models, according to BNEF. So far, none of the companies that deploy the equipment has figured out how to make a profit.\nThe dilemma boils down to demand, and there’s a certain chicken-and-egg quality to it. Most electric-vehicle drivers charge their cars at home, so many public charging stations get little use. But lots of people still driving gasoline-powered cars won’t consider going electric until they see charging stations widely deployed, for fear that they will run out of juice on the road.\nSpeculators are piling into the industry, convinced that boom times are around the corner, while short sellers and other skeptics warn that some of these companies will go belly-up long before they figure out how to make money. Biden’s plan to spend $15 billion to help create 500,000 more public stations by 2030 is feeding the optimism, with investors flocking to EV charging companies since his election. The risk is that the early movers will get badly burned, potentially souring capital markets on the industry for years to come.\n“It’s definitely going to require years of investment before they get any return,” said Chris Nelder, who has studied the economics of charging for the RMI energy research institute.\nNelder is sure that electric-vehicle charging will eventually be profitable. But when that tipping point will arrive is one of the biggest questions hanging over charging companies.\nA decade into its existence, the industry is still hunting for a winning business model. Two of the more established names, Blink Charging Co. and Beam Global, made less than $10 million in revenue last year. That didn’t stop investors from sending Blink shares up more than 500% after Biden’s November win, and while it has come well off its peak the company’s market valuation is still north of $1.6 billion. Beam jumped more than 300%, though it has lost about half its value this year.\nThe biggest U.S. company, ChargePoint Holdings Inc., just went public via a special purpose acquisition company, or SPAC, and others including EVgo Services and Volta Industries Inc. are poised to follow.\nFueling cars and trucks has always been a low-margin business, with gasoline stations making much of their money from selling snacks, coffee and cigarettes. The business is even tougher when it comes to EVs. Unless they live in dense cities like New York or San Francisco, drivers do the vast majority of charging at home -- their garage is their gas station. They use public chargers infrequently, with most vehicles offering more than enough range to complete daily errands without a topoff. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that 80% of EV charging happens at home.\nAnother vexing issue is the nature of using parking spots to double as charging locations. If a customer pulls into a space in her apartment complex at 9 p.m. and hooks up to buy a few dollars’ worth of electricity, more often than not, she’ll leave her car there until going to work the next day. No one else can use that charger for the next 10 hours, regardless of when her car is done charging.\nThen there is the relatively small number of vehicles involved. Americans bought 259,000 new electric cars last year, a record according to BloombergNEF, but it’s still just 2% of total car and truck sales. And of those new EVs, 79% were made by Tesla Inc., which has its own branded network of “superchargers” that can’t be used by any other electric car.\nTesla drivers are “close-looped into the Tesla network,” said BNEF analyst Ryan Fisher. “Where is the demand to plug into these other networks? It doesn’t exist.”\nThe Biden administration hopes it can boost some of that demand with the proposed spending, part of its infrastructure plan now before Congress. Some of the money would go toward grants and incentive programs to install chargers, according to a fact sheet from the White House, and some would go toward research into lowering the cost of the chargers themselves.\nThe charging companies are positioning themselves for profitability in different ways.\nChargePoint sells stations and offers various degrees of operational support, but doesn’t get paid from the charging itself. A typical client might be a Silicon Valley company that offers its employees free charging at work as a perk. If a particular station gets little use, ChargePoint still gets paid.\n“I wouldn’t want a driver as a customer, because I think I’d starve to death,” said Pasquale Romano, ChargePoint’s chief executive officer, in an interview. “There’s not a lot of money in electricity.”\nOther companies, like EVgo, own the chargers they deploy and make money each time they’re used.\nBlink, meanwhile, takes both approaches at once. The company prefers to own and operate as many of its stations as possible, but if a property owner wants to buy the chargers from Blink outright, that’s fine, too. The biggest priority is locking up good sites in high-demand areas, according to CEO Michael Farkas.\n“Right now, this is a land grab,” Farkas said in an interview. “For us this is about getting as many locations as we can, and we’ll deal with profitability later.”\nVolta Industries, which plans to go public in a SPAC deal this year, adds advertising to the mix. Its chargers come with 55-inch digital screens. A grocery store can place chargers in its parking lot and bombard customers with ads for specific products inside.\nBeam Global offers a self-contained unit with a canopy of solar cells powering a battery and a charger. It doesn’t require digging up the parking lot to install a power line. “You can tell the world you’re driving on sunshine for free,” CEO Desmond Wheatley said in an interview.\nThere’s good reason for Beam to focus on easy installation and self-generated power. The time and cost to install a grid-connected charging station can be significant, often involving construction permits and hooking up to the local utility. The equipment itself can range from less than $2,000 for a slower, basic charger to more than $100,000 for the most powerful models, according to BNEF.
