products.
\n
Its BaaS technology provides a USP that should help NIO gain market share in the coming years.
\n
NIO is trading at a high valuation, and a lot of future growth is priced in already. Investors may have to be patient to see the growth story play out.
\n
\n
Photo by Andy Feng/iStock Editorial via Getty Images
\n
Article Thesis
\n
NIO (NIO) is a high-growth EV pure-play with unique offerings such as battery-as-a-service. The company enjoys growth tailwinds in its home market China and will increase its presence in overseas markets dramatically in the coming years. NIO is not as expensive as some other EV stocks, but shares are, on the other hand, still trading at a steep premium compared to how legacy auto companies are valued. Overall, NIO could return significant amounts of money in the coming years, but that is not a certainty, and investors should keep an eye on NIO's risk factors.
\n
NIO Stock Price
\n
NIO, Inc. is one of China's leading EV pure-plays, and that is reflected in its current valuation:
\n
Data by YCharts
\n
At slightly below $40, NIO is valued at more than $60 billion right now. This is about 40% less than the valuation shares have traded at when they peaked in early 2021, which reflects the declining enthusiasm for EV stocks, as most of NIO's peers, including Tesla (TSLA), have seen their shares come back as well. Still, for reference, NIO is valued around the same level as Ford (F) - which is a way larger company for now, in terms of revenue and vehicle sales.
\n
Is NIO A Good Long-Term Stock?
\n
NIO is active in the high-growth EV market and thus benefits a lot from market growth tailwinds. On top of that, NIO also has an attractive product portfolio that includes well-received models such as the ES6 and ES8 SUVs. What differentiates NIO from most other EV companies is its battery-swapping technology that allows consumers to get a fully-charged battery in a couple of minutes when visiting one of NIO's battery-swapping stations.
\n
This means that the downtime when doing longer trips via an EV is reduced dramatically, as a battery-swap takes roughly as much time as refueling an ICE-powered car, whereas recharging most EVs takes well more than a couple of minutes. NIO's battery-swapping stations are being built out around China right now, although there is no meaningful footprint outside of NIO's home market yet.
\n
Still, NIO plans to roll out that service in international markets over the years, and once there is a large enough footprint of them to make a difference, this should be a unique selling point for NIO that will help differentiate its offerings from those of most peers. This could, I believe, result in further market share gains, which is why I wouldn't be surprised to see NIO grow at a rapid pace for the coming years.
\n
For 2021, NIO will likely deliver revenue growth of more than 100% on the back of strong deliveries growth, as the analyst community is currently forecasting a 130% revenue increase this year. For Q2, NIO is expecting a growth rate of around 110% for its deliveries, following a massive 480% revenue increase during the first quarter. NIO thus is growing quicker than the EV market as a whole, and also quicker than peers such as Tesla, which will grow by around 50%-60% this year, according to the analyst community, which is about half the growth rate that is expected for NIO this year.
\n
Maintaining 100%+ growth forever is, of course, not possible, and NIO's growth will decline from that level in the coming years. But due to the fact that its products are well-liked in its home market, while the company is also ambitiously planning a major entry into the large European EV market, NIO should still deliver very considerable growth in the coming years.
\n
Obvious growth tailwinds for a company, or even an industry, do not necessarily equate to massive share price upside, however. Investors should consider that NIO will, like all auto companies, be active in a cyclical, capital-intense industry where margins, on average, are not very high. This doesn't mean that NIO does not have long-term upside, but investors should keep in mind that a home run is not guaranteed when investing in NIO or other EV stocks - despite the fact that EV sales are growing quickly.
\n
NIO Stock Forecast In 5 Years
\n
NIO will grow its revenues by more than 100% this year, according to most estimates, but growth projections beyond that point are varying a lot more. Looking at 2022, for example, the analyst consensus for NIO's revenues is $8.7 billion, which would reflect a 78% increase versus the consensus for 2021. Estimates are in a wide range, however, as analyst estimates range from $7.3 billion to $11.9 billion in revenue in 2022.
\n
In other words, the most bullish estimates see NIO deliver 60% higher revenues than the most bearish estimates. Since these estimates are being made for 2022 - just one year from now - this wide discrepancy shows how hard it is to forecast exact revenue or earnings numbers for a company like NIO.
\n
For my estimate for 2025's revenues, I'll go with the analyst consensus for 2022, i.e. $8.7 billion, and then assume that revenues will grow at 1.5x the forecasted overall market growth rate of 27% in 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026. This would get us to $34 billion in revenue in 2026, i.e. five years from now. Since analysts are currently forecasting that revenue will grow by 110% this year, and by around 80% next year, some readers may argue that a 40% growth rate estimate for 2023-2026 is too conservative. But the major unknowns and uncertainties around competitive pressures, government policies, etc., mean that I think that projecting a higher growth rate for many years in advance might be too optimistic.
\n
What might a $34 billion top line mean for NIO's stock price? Right now, shares are valued at 11.6x this year's expected sales, which is almost perfectly in line with the valuation of XPeng (XPEV), and slightly lower than that of Tesla:
\n
Data by YCharts
\n
Looking at 2022, we see that shares are valued at around 7x expected revenues right now, whereas XPeng and Tesla trade at 6x and 9x their expected revenues right now. I highly doubt that the average EV company will be trading at high single-digit or even double-digit sales multiples in 2026, as this is just too much of a difference versus the 0.5-2x revenue multiples that legacy auto companies usually trade at. But when we assume that NIO, as an EV pure-play, will still trade at a premium to legacy auto in the middle of the 2020s, a 3x or 4x sales multiple might be a realistic estimate.
\n
When we go with 3.5x our revenue forecast for 2026, that would equate to a market capitalization of 119 billion - about 90% more than NIO's current market capitalization. NIO's share count has not been constant, however, and has, in fact, been rising considerably in the past. When we assume that the share count will rise by another 20% through 2026, to 1.9 billion, then shares would trade at $61 in 2026. This would mean that shares have an upside potential of around 55% over the next five years, or about 9% annually.
\n
That is not at all unattractive, but it also isn't an absolutely outstanding return. On top of that, NIO, like many other EV startups, is a company with above-average volatility, above-average risks, and above-average uncertainties. I thus would not call NIO overly attractive at current prices, as the forecasted return is solid, but goes hand in hand with considerable risks/uncertainties. One can, of course, argue that the forecasted growth is too high, or too low, or that the target sales multiple should be different in 2026. As a base case scenario, I feel like this is reasonable, however.
\n
Is NIO Stock A Buy Now?
\n
In retrospect, it is pretty clear that NIO at $10 about a year ago was a great opportunity, and that buying NIO at $67 at the peak earlier this year was a pretty bad decision. NIO today, in the high $30s, is somewhere in between these two extremes. I believe that, for long-term investors, NIO has a good chance of delivering solid returns over the years. Investors may have to be patient to see the growth story play out.\n\nPhoto by Andy Feng/iStock Editorial via Getty Images\nArticle Thesis\nNIO (NIO) is a high-growth EV pure-play with unique offerings such as battery-as-a-service. The company enjoys growth tailwinds in its home market China and will increase its presence in overseas markets dramatically in the coming years. NIO is not as expensive as some other EV stocks, but shares are, on the other hand, still trading at a steep premium compared to how legacy auto companies are valued. Overall, NIO could return significant amounts of money in the coming years, but that is not a certainty, and investors should keep an eye on NIO's risk factors.\nNIO Stock Price\nNIO, Inc. is one of China's leading EV pure-plays, and that is reflected in its current valuation:\nData by YCharts\nAt slightly below $40, NIO is valued at more than $60 billion right now. This is about 40% less than the valuation shares have traded at when they peaked in early 2021, which reflects the declining enthusiasm for EV stocks, as most of NIO's peers, including Tesla (TSLA), have seen their shares come back as well. Still, for reference, NIO is valued around the same level as Ford (F) - which is a way larger company for now, in terms of revenue and vehicle sales.\nIs NIO A Good Long-Term Stock?\nNIO is active in the high-growth EV market and thus benefits a lot from market growth tailwinds. On top of that, NIO also has an attractive product portfolio that includes well-received models such as the ES6 and ES8 SUVs. What differentiates NIO from most other EV companies is its battery-swapping technology that allows consumers to get a fully-charged battery in a couple of minutes when visiting one of NIO's battery-swapping stations.\nThis means that the downtime when doing longer trips via an EV is reduced dramatically, as a battery-swap takes roughly as much time as refueling an ICE-powered car, whereas recharging most EVs takes well more than a couple of minutes. NIO's battery-swapping stations are being built out around China right now, although there is no meaningful footprint outside of NIO's home market yet.\nStill, NIO plans to roll out that service in international markets over the years, and once there is a large enough footprint of them to make a difference, this should be a unique selling point for NIO that will help differentiate its offerings from those of most peers. This could, I believe, result in further market share gains, which is why I wouldn't be surprised to see NIO grow at a rapid pace for the coming years.\nFor 2021, NIO will likely deliver revenue growth of more than 100% on the back of strong deliveries growth, as the analyst community is currently forecasting a 130% revenue increase this year. For Q2, NIO is expecting a growth rate of around 110% for its deliveries, following a massive 480% revenue increase during the first quarter. NIO thus is growing quicker than the EV market as a whole, and also quicker than peers such as Tesla, which will grow by around 50%-60% this year, according to the analyst community, which is about half the growth rate that is expected for NIO this year.\nMaintaining 100%+ growth forever is, of course, not possible, and NIO's growth will decline from that level in the coming years. But due to the fact that its products are well-liked in its home market, while the company is also ambitiously planning a major entry into the large European EV market, NIO should still deliver very considerable growth in the coming years.\nObvious growth tailwinds for a company, or even an industry, do not necessarily equate to massive share price upside, however. Investors should consider that NIO will, like all auto companies, be active in a cyclical, capital-intense industry where margins, on average, are not very high. This doesn't mean that NIO does not have long-term upside, but investors should keep in mind that a home run is not guaranteed when investing in NIO or other EV stocks - despite the fact that EV sales are growing quickly.\nNIO Stock Forecast In 5 Years\nNIO will grow its revenues by more than 100% this year, according to most estimates, but growth projections beyond that point are varying a lot more. Looking at 2022, for example, the analyst consensus for NIO's revenues is $8.7 billion, which would reflect a 78% increase versus the consensus for 2021. Estimates are in a wide range, however, as analyst estimates range from $7.3 billion to $11.9 billion in revenue in 2022.\nIn other words, the most bullish estimates see NIO deliver 60% higher revenues than the most bearish estimates. Since these estimates are being made for 2022 - just one year from now - this wide discrepancy shows how hard it is to forecast exact revenue or earnings numbers for a company like NIO.\nFor my estimate for 2025's revenues, I'll go with the analyst consensus for 2022, i.e. But the major unknowns and uncertainties around competitive pressures, government policies, etc., mean that I think that projecting a higher growth rate for many years in advance might be too optimistic.\nWhat might a $34 billion top line mean for NIO's stock price? Right now, shares are valued at 11.6x this year's expected sales, which is almost perfectly in line with the valuation of XPeng (XPEV), and slightly lower than that of Tesla:\nData by YCharts\nLooking at 2022, we see that shares are valued at around 7x expected revenues right now, whereas XPeng and Tesla trade at 6x and 9x their expected revenues right now. I highly doubt that the average EV company will be trading at high single-digit or even double-digit sales multiples in 2026, as this is just too much of a difference versus the 0.5-2x revenue multiples that legacy auto companies usually trade at. But when we assume that NIO, as an EV pure-play, will still trade at a premium to legacy auto in the middle of the 2020s, a 3x or 4x sales multiple might be a realistic estimate.\nWhen we go with 3.5x our revenue forecast for 2026, that would equate to a market capitalization of 119 billion - about 90% more than NIO's current market capitalization. NIO's share count has not been constant, however, and has, in fact, been rising considerably in the past. When we assume that the share count will rise by another 20% through 2026, to 1.9 billion, then shares would trade at $61 in 2026. This would mean that shares have an upside potential of around 55% over the next five years, or about 9% annually.\nThat is not at all unattractive, but it also isn't an absolutely outstanding return. As a base case scenario, I feel like this is reasonable, however.\nIs NIO Stock A Buy Now?\nIn retrospect, it is pretty clear that NIO at $10 about a year ago was a great opportunity, and that buying NIO at $67 at the peak earlier this year was a pretty bad decision. NIO today, in the high $30s, is somewhere in between these two extremes. I believe that, for long-term investors, NIO has a good chance of delivering solid returns over the years. At the same time, however, a lot of growth is priced into the stock right now, and it is not possible to forecast what competitors will do over the coming years, how accommodating governments will be to EVs, how well the rollout in Europe and other international markets will go, etc.\nI think NIO is more attractive than many other EV companies today, including many of the EV startups that don't have any viable products yet, and also versus Tesla (which is growing slower and still trades at a higher valuation). I would not be surprised to see NIO's stock deliver solid returns during the 2020s. I don't think that NIO is an absolute no-brainer buy today, however, as NIO still trades at a quite high valuation, for now, even factoring in its strong growth.\nFor those that are enterprising and do not mind the risks and uncertainties around future product launches and international expansion, the stock's volatility, and so on, NIO could be a buy today. But it is not a good choice for everyone, and some may want to watch the EV race from the sidelines instead of putting money at risk at current valuations.\nThe current analyst consensus share price target is $59, but I personally do not think this is realistic in the very near term. Based on expected revenues for 2021, this would put NIO at an 18x sales multiple, which is, I believe, not justified. Over the next five years, however, a share price in that region seems achievable, I believe.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":111990625,"gmtCreate":1622647489367,"gmtModify":1704188080447,"author":{"id":"3577586956326562","authorId":"3577586956326562","name":"Bay07","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8b2b85915b0aec0844a0fc21a7f6b903","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3577586956326562","authorIdStr":"3577586956326562"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Cool","listText":"Cool","text":"Cool","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/111990625","repostId":"2140419846","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":137521358,"gmtCreate":1622365368374,"gmtModify":1704183516846,"author":{"id":"3577586956326562","authorId":"3577586956326562","name":"Bay07","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8b2b85915b0aec0844a0fc21a7f6b903","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3577586956326562","authorIdStr":"3577586956326562"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"<a maker of DNA sequencing technology has a problem. It's been less than two years since the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) successfully sued to block a proposed acquisition from Illumina (NASDAQ:ILMN), and the agency is at it again. Recently, the government's antitrust watchdog started arguing against the acquisition of a company that's still in the developmental stage.
\n
If the FTC's latest move makes you nervous about buying Illumina stock, you're not alone. PacBio is a much smaller manufacturer of next-generation DNA sequencing technology, which made it fairly easy to argue that Illumina was trying to extinguish a competitive threat.
\n
Illumina terminated its merger agreement with PacBio a few weeks after the FTC challenged the buyout, but the company won't give in as quickly this time around. Now, the FTC is trying to stop Illumina from buying GRAIL, a company Illumina initially founded to develop blood-based tests for early cancer detection.
\n
Illumina spun GRAIL off into a separate business in 2017 and still owns 14.5% of the privately held company. As an aspiring multicancer early detection (MCED) provider, GRAIL doesn't manufacture DNA sequencing machines. GRAIL simply relies on them to run samples drawn from patients. That means the FTC can't allege monopoly-seeking and instead has to rely on the courts to establish a new reason to prohibit mergers.
\n
Innovation diminisher?
\n
Instead of a simple monopoly-seeking case, the FTC proposes to stifle this merger on the grounds that it would diminish innovation in the U.S. market for MCED tests. That's because Illumina is effectively the only provider of DNA sequencing for GRAIL and its potential competitors.
\n
Blocking a merger because it could choke off a critical input for all MCED test providers is an argument that might hold up if the FTC had evidence to that effect. These tests can tell oncologists which genetic mutations are driving a patient's disease from a vial of blood. However, the FDA hasn't approved any MCEDs from GRAIL or its potential competitors.
\n
Likely scenario
\n
Antitrust regulators wouldn't have a problem here if Illumina had retained ownership of GRAIL in 2017, but the company isn't interested in starting from scratch. Illumina is likely to forge ahead with its planned acquisition of GRAIL to keep pace with Roche and Guardant Health.
\n
GRAIL should be ready to launch its MCED test as a laboratory-developed test this year. But that isn't the same as an FDA approval that would make it a lot easier for GRAIL to bill insurers and Medicare for its services.
\n
Since there isn't an MCED industry as such yet, and laws already exist to prevent Illumina from treating potential competitors unfairly, it's hard to see how the FTC's lawsuit could go very far. But if a court rules against Illumina, the ruling could affect any successful service provider that tries to buy a business it services.
\n
A winner either way
\n
The FTC's lawsuit is hardly a reason to avoid the stock. Fool","summary":"Hype-driven companies and penny stocks are rarely, if ever, a smart place to put your money to work.","content":"
Time and again, the stock market has demonstrated that it rewards patience. Despite the quickest drawdown of at least 30% in the broad-based S&P 500's storied history last year, investors who trusted in their investment theses have been handsomely rewarded. Over the trailing year, 910 stocks with a market cap of at least $300 million have doubled in value, with 62 of those stocks up by more than 500%.
\n
While it's great to see the U.S. economy getting back on track, some of the most popular stocks investors are buying are downright awful businesses. Even with things looking up for the market as a whole, the following five ultra-popular stocks should be avoided like the plague in June.
\n
\n
AMC Entertainment
\n
There's absolutely no question that the No. 1 stock to avoid like the plague in June is movie theater chain AMC Entertainment (NYSE:AMC). It's far and away the most disassociated stock from its underlying business.
\n
As most folks probably know by now, retail traders from Reddit, Twitter, and other social media platforms have banded together to buy shares and call options in AMC, which is a fairly heavily short-sold stock. Their goal being to effect a short squeeze -- i.e., an event where pessimists (short-sellers) feel trapped in their positions and run for the exit at once. Short squeezes are very short-term events and they have a very poor track record of success.
\n
While I have a laundry list of issues with the basis for this trade, perhaps the single biggest is that retail traders are willingly ignoring AMC's dumpster fire of an income statement and balance sheet. This is a company that almost certainly won't be capable of paying back its debts when they come due by or before 2026. It's also now been hamstrung by the same retail investors who claimed to want to \"save AMC.\" That's because AMC has maxed out how many shares it's authorized to issue, and can therefore not take advantage of higher prices with a capital raise. The May proxy vote would have allowed AMC to take advantage of this recent spike, but shortsightedness from retail traders killed that idea.
\n
The AMC bull thesis is also built on a monument of misinformation. For example, retail traders believe hedge funds can bankrupt companies, when it's the operating performance and actions of businesses that determine whether or not they succeed or fail.
\n
Suffice it to say, the willful ignorance of concrete data in AMC's income statements and balance sheets will come back to haunt these traders.
\n
\n
Marathon Digital Holdings
\n
June would also be a very good time to say goodbye to a number Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) stocks. Cryptocurrency miner Marathon Digital Holdings (NASDAQ:MARA) may well top that list.
\n
As I've been previously stated, I'm not a fan of Bitcoin. Although it's the largest digital currency in the world by market value, it's been stuck at handling a meager 300,000 transactions daily for more than a year and is accepted by approximately 15,200 businesses worldwide. That's nothing when you consider that there an estimated 582 million entrepreneurs around the globe.
\n
Bitcoin is also prone to long-winded downtrends. Over the past decade, the top cryptocurrency has lost at least 80% of its value on three separate occasions. That's bad news for Marathon for two key reasons. First, Marathon Digital mines Bitcoin, and is therefore reliant on higher prices to increase its revenue. It's not even clear if Marathon's mining operations would be sustainable if Bitcoin, once again, declines by more than 80% from its high of nearly $65,000.
\n
The other issue is that Marathon purchased $150 million in Bitcoin earlier this year. While still up slightly on its investment, a protracted move lower in Bitcoin threatens to wipe out a good chunk of Marathon Digital's assets.
\n
I've said it before and I'll say it again: Crypto mining stocks are the worst way to invest in Bitcoin.
\n
\n
Sundial Growers
\n
Following its late-May rally, Sundial Growers (NASDAQ:SNDL) has once more emerged as the top marijuana stock to avoid, as well as one of the worst stocks to buy, as a whole.
\n
While marijuana is an intriguing place to put your money to work over the next five to 10 years, Canadian pot stock Sundial has consistently underperformed its peers and done nothing to build shareholder value.
\n
In an effort to rid its balance sheet of debt, the company's management team began selling stock in October 2020... and it just hasn't stopped. Sundial has built up a cash hoard of 1.08 billion Canadian (about $894 million U.S.), but has done so by issuing more than 1.35 billion shares of stock in eight months. As of May 7, the company had 1.86 billion shares outstanding -- and this figure is likely to go higher with an $800 million at-the-market share offering approved earlier this year. Sundial is building up cash with no particular purpose in mind and drowning its shareholders in the process.
\n
With 1.86 billion shares outstanding, Sundial has virtually no chance of ever producing meaningful earnings per share, and it may not be able to get back above $1 per share on a consistent basis. It'll likely have to follow in the footsteps of serial diluter Aurora Cannabis and reverse split to get its share price to a respectable level.
\n
As the icing on the cake, legal pot sales in Canada have grown significantly, while Sundial's marijuana sales have been slashed by a double-digit percentage. It's not where you want to put your money to work in the high-growth cannabis space.
\n
\n
Castor Maritime
\n
As a general rule, penny stocks are penny stocks for a good reason. A company that consistently has a very low share price probably has an untested operating model, is losing money, and isn't creating value for its shareholders. This pretty much sums up Castor Maritime (NASDAQ:CTRM).
\n
On paper, the operating model doesn't sound awful. Castor buys vessels capable of transporting dry bulk goods, such as grains, fertilizer, sugar, and steel. If the U.S. and global economy are rebounding from their pandemic lows, demand for dry bulk goods and daily charter rates should increase over time. Pretty straightforward, right?
\n
The problem is that Castor Maritime didn't have the fleet or the finances to take advantage of this rebound. To compensate, it's been selling shares of its stock like it's going out of style to raise capital to buy new vessels. Castor ended 2020 with six ships but it now owns 26, when all are fully delivered. But it's the company's shareholders who paid the price for this shopping spree. Castor's share count has risen from 3.3 million shares on Dec. 31, 2019 to about 900 million (both figures are pre-split).
\n
However, last month the company had to enact a 1-for-10 reverse split to simply remain listed on the Nasdaq exchange. Issuing so many shares pushed Castor's share price below $0.40, and a $1 minimum share price is required for continued listing.
\n
We've witnessed this same dilute and reverse-split story time and again in the shipping space. Castor is no different, which is why it should be avoided.
\n
\n
GameStop
\n
Since we began with a Reddit pump-and-dump stock (AMC), it's only fitting that we end with another hype-driven Reddit stock: video game and accessories retailer GameStop (NYSE:GME).
\n
Retail traders have flocked to GameStop for the exact same reason as AMC. GameStop had a larger percentage of its float held short than any other publicly traded company in January. This made it the ideal candidate for a short squeeze. Unfortunately, it's also spurred retail investors to now hone in on short interest data and absolutely nothing else about the companies they're buying.
\n
To be clear, GameStop is a much, much better and more financially sound company than AMC. A recent share offering helped raise $551 million in gross proceeds, which means GameStop has wiped out its debt and has more than enough cash to move forward with its digital transformation. In fact, all of these avoidable stocks are likely OK on the liquidity front for the next three to five years... except AMC.
\n
Where GameStop gets into trouble is if you dig into its operating performance. It's always been a brick-and-mortar-focused company. This worked well for two decades, but is problematic now that gaming has gone digital. Despite the quickest drawdown of at least 30% in the broad-based S&P 500's storied history last year, investors who trusted in their investment theses have been handsomely rewarded. Over the trailing year, 910 stocks with a market cap of at least $300 million have doubled in value, with 62 of those stocks up by more than 500%.\nWhile it's great to see the U.S. economy getting back on track, some of the most popular stocks investors are buying are downright awful businesses. Even with things looking up for the market as a whole, the following five ultra-popular stocks should be avoided like the plague in June.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nAMC Entertainment\nThere's absolutely no question that the No. 1 stock to avoid like the plague in June is movie theater chain AMC Entertainment (NYSE:AMC). It's far and away the most disassociated stock from its underlying business.\nAs most folks probably know by now, retail traders from Reddit, Twitter, and other social media platforms have banded together to buy shares and call options in AMC, which is a fairly heavily short-sold stock. Their goal being to effect a short squeeze -- i.e., an event where pessimists (short-sellers) feel trapped in their positions and run for the exit at once. Short squeezes are very short-term events and they have a very poor track record of success.\nWhile I have a laundry list of issues with the basis for this trade, perhaps the single biggest is that retail traders are willingly ignoring AMC's dumpster fire of an income statement and balance sheet. This is a company that almost certainly won't be capable of paying back its debts when they come due by or before 2026. It's also now been hamstrung by the same retail investors who claimed to want to \"save AMC.\" That's because AMC has maxed out how many shares it's authorized to issue, and can therefore not take advantage of higher prices with a capital raise. The May proxy vote would have allowed AMC to take advantage of this recent spike, but shortsightedness from retail traders killed that idea.\nThe AMC bull thesis is also built on a monument of misinformation. For example, retail traders believe hedge funds can bankrupt companies, when it's the operating performance and actions of businesses that determine whether or not they succeed or fail.\nSuffice it to say, the willful ignorance of concrete data in AMC's income statements and balance sheets will come back to haunt these traders.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nMarathon Digital Holdings\nJune would also be a very good time to say goodbye to a number Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) stocks. Cryptocurrency miner Marathon Digital Holdings (NASDAQ:MARA) may well top that list.\nAs I've been previously stated, I'm not a fan of Bitcoin. Although it's the largest digital currency in the world by market value, it's been stuck at handling a meager 300,000 transactions daily for more than a year and is accepted by approximately 15,200 businesses worldwide. That's nothing when you consider that there an estimated 582 million entrepreneurs around the globe.\nBitcoin is also prone to long-winded downtrends. Over the past decade, the top cryptocurrency has lost at least 80% of its value on three separate occasions. That's bad news for Marathon for two key reasons. First, Marathon Digital mines Bitcoin, and is therefore reliant on higher prices to increase its revenue. It's not even clear if Marathon's mining operations would be sustainable if Bitcoin, once again, declines by more than 80% from its high of nearly $65,000.\nThe other issue is that Marathon purchased $150 million in Bitcoin earlier this year. While still up slightly on its investment, a protracted move lower in Bitcoin threatens to wipe out a good chunk of Marathon Digital's assets.\nI've said it before and I'll say it again: Crypto mining stocks are the worst way to invest in Bitcoin.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nSundial Growers\nFollowing its late-May rally, Sundial Growers (NASDAQ:SNDL) has once more emerged as the top marijuana stock to avoid, as well as one of the worst stocks to buy, as a whole.\nWhile marijuana is an intriguing place to put your money to work over the next five to 10 years, Canadian pot stock Sundial has consistently underperformed its peers and done nothing to build shareholder value.\nIn an effort to rid its balance sheet of debt, the company's management team began selling stock in October 2020... and it just hasn't stopped. Sundial has built up a cash hoard of 1.08 billion Canadian (about $894 million U.S.), but has done so by issuing more than 1.35 billion shares of stock in eight months. As of May 7, the company had 1.86 billion shares outstanding -- and this figure is likely to go higher with an $800 million at-the-market share offering approved earlier this year. Sundial is building up cash with no particular purpose in mind and drowning its shareholders in the process.\nWith 1.86 billion shares outstanding, Sundial has virtually no chance of ever producing meaningful earnings per share, and it may not be able to get back above $1 per share on a consistent basis. It'll likely have to follow in the footsteps of serial diluter Aurora Cannabis and reverse split to get its share price to a respectable level.\nAs the icing on the cake, legal pot sales in Canada have grown significantly, while Sundial's marijuana sales have been slashed by a double-digit percentage. It's not where you want to put your money to work in the high-growth cannabis space.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nCastor Maritime\nAs a general rule, penny stocks are penny stocks for a good reason. A company that consistently has a very low share price probably has an untested operating model, is losing money, and isn't creating value for its shareholders. This pretty much sums up Castor Maritime (NASDAQ:CTRM).\nOn paper, the operating model doesn't sound awful. Castor buys vessels capable of transporting dry bulk goods, such as grains, fertilizer, sugar, and steel. If the U.S. and global economy are rebounding from their pandemic lows, demand for dry bulk goods and daily charter rates should increase over time. Pretty straightforward, right?\nThe problem is that Castor Maritime didn't have the fleet or the finances to take advantage of this rebound. To compensate, it's been selling shares of its stock like it's going out of style to raise capital to buy new vessels. Castor ended 2020 with six ships but it now owns 26, when all are fully delivered. But it's the company's shareholders who paid the price for this shopping spree. Castor's share count has risen from 3.3 million shares on Dec. 31, 2019 to about 900 million (both figures are pre-split).\nHowever, last month the company had to enact a 1-for-10 reverse split to simply remain listed on the Nasdaq exchange. Issuing so many shares pushed Castor's share price below $0.40, and a $1 minimum share price is required for continued listing.\nWe've witnessed this same dilute and reverse-split story time and again in the shipping space. Castor is no different, which is why it should be avoided.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nGameStop\nSince we began with a Reddit pump-and-dump stock (AMC), it's only fitting that we end with another hype-driven Reddit stock: video game and accessories retailer GameStop (NYSE:GME).\nRetail traders have flocked to GameStop for the exact same reason as AMC. GameStop had a larger percentage of its float held short than any other publicly traded company in January. This made it the ideal candidate for a short squeeze. Unfortunately, it's also spurred retail investors to now hone in on short interest data and absolutely nothing else about the companies they're buying.\nTo be clear, GameStop is a much, much better and more financially sound company than AMC. A recent share offering helped raise $551 million in gross proceeds, which means GameStop has wiped out its debt and has more than enough cash to move forward with its digital transformation. In fact, all of these avoidable stocks are likely OK on the liquidity front for the next three to five years... except AMC.\nWhere GameStop gets into trouble is if you dig into its operating performance. It's always been a brick-and-mortar-focused company. This worked well for two decades, but is problematic now that gaming has gone digital. Even with e-commerce sales up 191% last year, GameStop's total sales declined by more than 21%. In short, sales will be stagnant for years as the company shutters physical locations and invests in digital initiatives. Such challenges certainly don't merit a nearly 1,100% gain on a year-to-date basis.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":137521358,"gmtCreate":1622365368374,"gmtModify":1704183516846,"author":{"id":"3577586956326562","authorId":"3577586956326562","name":"Bay07","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8b2b85915b0aec0844a0fc21a7f6b903","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3577586956326562","authorIdStr":"3577586956326562"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Apple(AAPL)$Abit slow but green is green","listText":"$Apple(AAPL)$Abit slow but green is green","text":"$Apple(AAPL)$Abit slow but green is green","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4cbb773355d0da3b73e681bc26db5475","width":"1125","height":"1949"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/137521358","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":61,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":194807218,"gmtCreate":1621351380734,"gmtModify":1704356309228,"author":{"id":"3577586956326562","authorId":"3577586956326562","name":"Bay07","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8b2b85915b0aec0844a0fc21a7f6b903","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3577586956326562","authorIdStr":"3577586956326562"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Dip dip dip","listText":"Dip dip dip","text":"Dip dip dip","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/cdbc3a5028270bdb2b0f48fd04e2d8a2","width":"750","height":"2260"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/194807218","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":58,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":192834824,"gmtCreate":1621175037969,"gmtModify":1704353625989,"author":{"id":"3577586956326562","authorId":"3577586956326562","name":"Bay07","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8b2b85915b0aec0844a0fc21a7f6b903","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3577586956326562","authorIdStr":"3577586956326562"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Buy or no buy","listText":"Buy or no buy","text":"Buy or no buy","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/da6ad62b20e204184e4cf0362f975db4","width":"750","height":"2210"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/192834824","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":143,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":102312480,"gmtCreate":1620177439040,"gmtModify":1704339747894,"author":{"id":"3577586956326562","authorId":"3577586956326562","name":"Bay07","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8b2b85915b0aec0844a0fc21a7f6b903","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3577586956326562","authorIdStr":"3577586956326562"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"When will it go to the moon","listText":"When will it go to the moon","text":"When will it go to the moon","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/afa843eb1ba72cf6579961595be1a8f4","width":"750","height":"2390"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/102312480","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":143,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
