Raees Cajee directed all questions to a lawyer, John Oosthuizen, who wasn’t immediately available to comment.</p>\n<p>While Laher, 31, worked for the brothers briefly, she resigned from Africrypt in 2019 -- her role was only to do some administrative work and provide legal advice as the company was getting started. The brothers will have to reply to the proceedings at the Johannesburg High Court by July 19, he said.</p>\n<p>Africrypt’s customer base spanned a variety of clients, from businesses and wealthy individuals to those who loaned money to keep up with their commitments.</p>\n<p>“There were rich people, without a doubt,” Botha said. “And people that invested their parents’ pension funds.”</p>\n<p>An Africrypt investor presentation paints Raees, the younger brother, as a prodigy. He was first introduced to Bitcoin in 2009 and started a business when he was 13 years old, it said. Africrypt invested capital “in a variety of crypto currencies which the parties have verbally discussed and understood,” according to a client contract.</p>\n<p>In a police statement from another investor seen by Bloomberg, Africrypt promised a fivefold return on the investment. Many companies faced adversity throughout the pandemic, and some are still recovering, but not BABA. Through the worst economic environment for businesses to navigate in recent times, BABA generated over $100 billion in revenue and $20 billion in net income during their recent fiscal year. While BABA didn't get the memo about businesses facing challenges amidst the pandemic, the market must not have read BABA's earnings report or crunched the numbers.</p>\n<p>There are two Chinese companies I am bullish on, and BABA is my biggest conviction for appreciation. BABA smashed through the $300 share price level at the end of October 2020, but shareholders have been left confused and disappointed since then. It looked like BABA would turn the corner after a horrible end to 2020 as shares appreciated from $222.36 from the close of 2020 to $270.83 in the middle of February 2021. Still, the markets had other plans, and all shares of BABA have done is disappoint shareholders. If you missed the BABA train, it's time to grab your tickets and climb aboard, and if you purchased BABA during its run to $300 or early 2021 rebound, it might be time to add to your holdings. BABA is going to experience tremendous tailwinds from China's population and economic growth over the next several years, and their printing press is going to need more ink.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/86da7b532f25f563d08490ddc43cbede\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"337\"><span>(Source: Alibaba)</span></p>\n<p><b>The Alibaba printing press is open for business, and it spits out billions</b></p>\n<p>How many companies can say their annual revenue through the pandemic exceeded $100 billion? The $100 billion revenue mark is a prestigious club that companies such as&nbsp;Facebook (FB),PepsiCo (PEP),Procter &amp; Gamble (PG),Target (TGT), and&nbsp;Johnson &amp; Johnson (JNJ)&nbsp;are not part of. BABA, on the other hand, witnessed its revenue increase by 52.11% and smash through $100 billion as they generated $109.47 billion in their recent fiscal year. For the year ending March 2019, BABA's revenue increased by $16.25 billion (40.74%) to $56.15 billion, then for the March 2020 fiscal year, revenue increased another $15.82 billion (28.17%) to $71.97 billion. BABA is in the same boat as Alphabet(NASDAQ:GOOG)(GOOGL), FB, and Amazon (AMZN) as they watched the pandemic push more people to go digital which accelerated their businesses. For BABA, the forced transition to digital helped them achieve $37.5 billion (52.11%) in additional revenue as they finished their March 2021 fiscal year with $109.47 billion in revenue.</p>\n<p>Since 2013 BABA has not had a year where their annual revenue increase didn't exceed 25% Year over Year (YoY). When you think about that as a growth rate, it's remarkable for a company of BABA's size as this isn't a company chasing its first billion-dollar revenue year. Over the past 5 fiscal years, BABA's annual revenue has increased by $93.8 billion (408.08%) at an average annual rate of 48.25%. Buying tends to beget more buying, which pushes the stock price up. It's rare that any company warns investors not to buy its stock. But that's exactly what Clover Health did recently.</p>\n<p>Companies that plan to issue additional shares file a prospectus with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). This prospectus gives potential investors a lot of information about the business and lays out the key reasons why they might want to buy the new shares.</p>\n<p>Clover Health filed such a prospectus earlier this year, outlining its intent to issue additional Class B shares. These shares don't have the same level of voting rights as its Class A shares. Last week, the company submitted an amendment to the SEC for this prospectus. And that amendment contained a brutally honest message for potential investors.</p>\n<p>The company acknowledged that its recent gains could be due to a short squeeze. Because of the potential for an additional short squeeze and its aftermath, Clover Health gave an unusually stark warning to investors: \"Under the circumstances, we caution you against investing in our Class B common stock, unless you are prepared to incur the risk of losing all or a substantial portion of your investment.\" It also noted, \"Investors that purchase shares of our Class A common stock during a short squeeze may lose a significant portion of their investment.\"</p>\n<h2>No fear?</h2>\n<p>Clover Health explained clearly what could happen with both its Class A and Class B shares. The company stated that if another short squeeze happens, once short-sellers cover their positions or if investors otherwise think the short squeeze has run its course, its stock price could fall quickly.</p>\n<p>You might think that such an ominous warning would scare off many investors. Nope. Instead, it produced an opposite effect. Last week, shares of Clover Health soared by a double-digit percentage immediately after the company's amended prospectus with the serious warning was submitted to the SEC.</p>\n<p>This reaction might seem counterintuitive. After all, Clover Health informed investors in no uncertain terms about the risks they face with buying the stock. So why did the shares of the company surge instead of sink? I think there are different reasons for different investors.</p>\n<p>Some truly believe in Clover Health and are willing to hold onto the stock regardless of what happens over the short term. Others are fully aware that the gains generated by a short squeeze could evaporate quickly but think they'll be able to sell in time to still make a big profit. Unfortunately, there could also be some who are new to investing and didn't pay attention to or didn't understand Clover Health's cautionary message.</p>\n<h2>Business vs. stock</h2>\n<p>It's always wise to think of buying a stock as buying a part of a business. That's exactly what you're doing when you buy shares of Clover Health or any other company. When the underlying business is strong and has great prospects, you don't have to be concerned about short-term volatility with the share price.</p>\n<p>However, there are times when share prices get way out of alignment with the prospects of the underlying business. Short squeezes can often make this happen. In these cases, it's especially important to be careful in buying a stock. Sure, you're still buying a part of a business -- but you can pay a lot more than the business is actually worth.</p>\n<p>In my view, there are several reasons to like Clover Health's underlying business. The company has an intriguing technology that physicians use. It's expanding into the original Medicare market, a move that could boost sales tremendously. Clover Health has a visionary management team.</p>\n<p>But buying a stock that's a short squeeze candidate is risky if you aren't ready, willing, and able to sell shares immediately once the short squeeze ends. Buying tends to beget more buying, which pushes the stock price up. It's rare that any company warns investors not to buy its stock. But that's exactly what Clover Health did recently.\nCompanies that plan to issue additional shares file a prospectus with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). This prospectus gives potential investors a lot of information about the business and lays out the key reasons why they might want to buy the new shares.\nClover Health filed such a prospectus earlier this year, outlining its intent to issue additional Class B shares. These shares don't have the same level of voting rights as its Class A shares. Last week, the company submitted an amendment to the SEC for this prospectus. And that amendment contained a brutally honest message for potential investors.\nThe company acknowledged that its recent gains could be due to a short squeeze. Because of the potential for an additional short squeeze and its aftermath, Clover Health gave an unusually stark warning to investors: \"Under the circumstances, we caution you against investing in our Class B common stock, unless you are prepared to incur the risk of losing all or a substantial portion of your investment.\" It also noted, \"Investors that purchase shares of our Class A common stock during a short squeeze may lose a significant portion of their investment.\"\nNo fear?\nClover Health explained clearly what could happen with both its Class A and Class B shares. Nope. Instead, it produced an opposite effect. They appear to have vanished, along with an estimated $3.6 billion in Bitcoin -- an amount that a lawyer for the brothers said was inflated.</p>\n<p>Attorney Gerhard Botha, who’s working on the firm’s liquidation case, said some of his clients last made contact with the brothers in May, and he was able to reach them before court proceedings kicked off in Johannesburg. But no “proactive response” was forthcoming from them, Botha said.</p>\n<p>A “To Let” sign could be spotted Saturday, fastened to a glass door of vacant office premises in Johannesburg’s upmarket Rosebank business hub that were listed in Africrypt’s communication with clients.</p>\n<p>Their cousin, Zakira Laher, said she was last able to make contact with the brothers in April and no one knows where they are. Raees Cajee directed all questions to a lawyer, John Oosthuizen, who wasn’t immediately available to comment.</p>\n<p>While Laher, 31, worked for the brothers briefly, she resigned from Africrypt in 2019 -- her role was only to do some administrative work and provide legal advice as the company was getting started. The brothers liked a “nice lifestyle,” filled with luxury cars and traveling -- nothing unusual considering they started making money with crypto ventures at an early age, she said.</p>\n<p>The brothers halted their operations in April, along with a message to investors that Africrypt had been hacked and funds were missing.</p>\n<p>A lawyer assisting some of the clients said the missing Bitcoin totaled as much as $3.6 billion. Another firm, working on bankruptcy proceedings, said they are aware of about 62 clients that have about 140 million rand ($9.9 million) at risk -- and possibly more coming forward.</p>\n<p>Africrypt’s Facebook page, with just two dozen followers, has also been eerily silent for weeks, punctuated by a rare entreaty from someone claiming to have been “totally duped.”</p>\n<p>Oosthuizen, a lawyer for Raees and Ameer Cajee, told the BBC that the brothers maintain the company was the victim of a hack and “categorically denied” they had absconded with funds. Oosthuizen also suggested the $3.6 billion figure for the missing Bitcoin was an overestimate.</p>\n<p>Although the brothers never notified the police about the hack, they intend to cooperate with any future investigation, Oosthuizen told the BBC. They had received death threats and reacted by trying to keep themselves and their families safe, he said.</p>\n<p>It wasn’t clear if the lawyer knew of their whereabouts.</p>\n<p>Raising Money</p>\n<p>Much of Africrypt’s marketing was achieved by word-of-mouth, said attorney Botha. The brothers will have to reply to the proceedings at the Johannesburg High Court by July 19, he said.</p>\n<p>Africrypt’s customer base spanned a variety of clients, from businesses and wealthy individuals to those who loaned money to keep up with their commitments.</p>\n<p>“There were rich people, without a doubt,” Botha said. “And people that invested their parents’ pension funds.”</p>\n<p>An Africrypt investor presentation paints Raees, the younger brother, as a prodigy. He was first introduced to Bitcoin in 2009 and started a business when he was 13 years old, it said. Africrypt invested capital “in a variety of crypto currencies which the parties have verbally discussed and understood,” according to a client contract.</p>\n<p>In a police statement from another investor seen by Bloomberg, Africrypt promised a fivefold return on the investment. They appear to have vanished, along with an estimated $3.6 billion in Bitcoin -- an amount that a lawyer for the brothers said was inflated.\nAttorney Gerhard Botha, who’s working on the firm’s liquidation case, said some of his clients last made contact with the brothers in May, and he was able to reach them before court proceedings kicked off in Johannesburg. But no “proactive response” was forthcoming from them, Botha said.\nA “To Let” sign could be spotted Saturday, fastened to a glass door of vacant office premises in Johannesburg’s upmarket Rosebank business hub that were listed in Africrypt’s communication with clients.\nTheir cousin, Zakira Laher, said she was last able to make contact with the brothers in April and no one knows where they are. Raees Cajee directed all questions to a lawyer, John Oosthuizen, who wasn’t immediately available to comment.\nWhile Laher, 31, worked for the brothers briefly, she resigned from Africrypt in 2019 -- her role was only to do some administrative work and provide legal advice as the company was getting started. The brothers liked a “nice lifestyle,” filled with luxury cars and traveling -- nothing unusual considering they started making money with crypto ventures at an early age, she said.\nThe brothers halted their operations in April, along with a message to investors that Africrypt had been hacked and funds were missing.\nA lawyer assisting some of the clients said the missing Bitcoin totaled as much as $3.6 billion. Another firm, working on bankruptcy proceedings, said they are aware of about 62 clients that have about 140 million rand ($9.9 million) at risk -- and possibly more coming forward.\nAfricrypt’s Facebook page, with just two dozen followers, has also been eerily silent for weeks, punctuated by a rare entreaty from someone claiming to have been “totally duped.”\nOosthuizen, a lawyer for Raees and Ameer Cajee, told the BBC that the brothers maintain the company was the victim of a hack and “categorically denied” they had absconded with funds. Oosthuizen also suggested the $3.6 billion figure for the missing Bitcoin was an overestimate.\nAlthough the brothers never notified the police about the hack, they intend to cooperate with any future investigation, Oosthuizen told the BBC. They had received death threats and reacted by trying to keep themselves and their families safe, he said.\nIt wasn’t clear if the lawyer knew of their whereabouts.\nRaising Money\nMuch of Africrypt’s marketing was achieved by word-of-mouth, said attorney Botha. The brothers will have to reply to the proceedings at the Johannesburg High Court by July 19, he said.\nAfricrypt’s customer base spanned a variety of clients, from businesses and wealthy individuals to those who loaned money to keep up with their commitments.\n“There were rich people, without a doubt,” Botha said. “And people that invested their parents’ pension funds.”\nAn Africrypt investor presentation paints Raees, the younger brother, as a prodigy. He was first introduced to Bitcoin in 2009 and started a business when he was 13 years old, it said. Africrypt invested capital “in a variety of crypto currencies which the parties have verbally discussed and understood,” according to a client contract.\nIn a police statement from another investor seen by Bloomberg, Africrypt promised a fivefold return on the investment.
