However, by dollar-cost averaging, holding for the long term, and reframing sell-offs as opportunities, it is possible to remain optimistic when facing a correction.

Speaking to this third point, let us look at three heavily sold-off stocks that offer the potential to set you up for life.

Pinterest

Driven by its mission "to help people discover the things they love, and inspire them to do those things in their daily lives," idea-incubator Pinterest ( PINS 1.01% ) puts a twist on social media.

In a world facing mental health concerns related to social media usage, Pinterest flips the script by providing hope and inspiration -- even if it's only on an aspirational level.

Perhaps thanks to this unique connection to its user base, the company saw its share price reach a high of almost $89 in 2021.

However, after reaching that high mark, Pinterest saw its monthly active users (MAUs) drop from 478 million in the first quarter of 2021 to 431 million at the end of the year. This drop, paired with PayPal's abandoned acquisition for around $70 per share, has sent the stock down 70% from its peak.

So what makes Pinterest interesting now?

First, the fears around this MAU decline seem overstated, considering it grew from 367 million in 2019 to 459 million the following year thanks to a pandemic-aided surge. Its subsequent decline in 2021 was far from surprising in hindsight as most of the world reopened, temporarily setting apps like Pinterest on the back burner.

Second, despite this pullback in MAUs, its global average revenue per user (ARPU) of $1.93 continues to shine. Up 23% year over year in the fourth quarter, this metric strengthened with a growing ARPU of $7.43 domestically and an international ARPU that was up 62% to $0.57. As Pinterest continues to roll out its shoppable content and advertising base internationally, look for its massive user base to become increasingly profitable to the company.

Finally, according to Comparably, Pinterest has a Net Promoter Score (NPS) of +50. NPS is rated on a scale of -100 to +100 and captures whether a company's customers would recommend the product. Generally, a positive score is good, while anything above +30 is excellent, making Pinterest's score stand out.

Best yet for investors, businesses with excellent NPS scores tend to outperform the market thanks to happier customers. As a result of this NPS score, its remaining international growth runway, and a meager price to free cash flow ratio of just 23, buying and holding Pinterest at these prices could move your retirement years ahead of schedule.

Zoom Video Communications

Like Pinterest, Zoom Video Communications ( ZM -0.46% ) boasts an excellent NPS of +53 thanks to its suite of hybrid work-enabling products. Famous for its video conferencing software that has become a verb, Zoom is creating new products, its most recent being the Zoom Contact Center.

This new offering will act as a customer engagement solution for Zoom's clients and highlights the somewhat quiet growth optionality hidden behind the company's core video product. Whether it's the Zoom phone, events, meetings, or rooms, and now its contact center, the company's unified communications platform is poised to evolve to meet the needs of its ever-expanding customer base.

However, with decelerating growth rates that saw revenue increase only 21% in the fiscal 2022 fourth quarter -- compared to growth of 369% the same time last year -- Zoom has seen its stock punished.

Now 70% below its 52-week highs, the market is pricing Zoom like it faces an existential crisis, but that couldn't be further from the truth. After generating $1.5 billion in free cash flow (FCF) over the last year, Zoom now trades at just 25 times FCF.

Data by YCharts.

Any time a company's price to free cash flow ratio approaches its sales growth rate as is the case here, it catches my attention as reasonably priced growth.

Zoom's promising NPS, product optionality, and cheap FCF generation make it a prime sell-off stock to consider holding forever.

DocuSign

Rounding out our trio of high NPS stocks is DocuSign ( DOCU 1.84% ) and its excellent score of +53. Led by its popular e-signature product, the company now has its eyes on expanding its broader Agreement Cloud offering.

This Agreement Cloud consists of four key pillars: prepare, sign, act, and manage. As e-signature is by far DocuSign's most prominent product, it intends to use a land-and-expand business model to grow its sales.

After getting its foot in the door with nearly 1.2 million customers thanks to its e-signature product, it now aims to build upon these relationships by offering anything and everything related to the agreement space.

However, with DocuSign seeing its billings growth drop from 56% in fiscal 2021 to 37% in fiscal 2022, the market has sent the stock's price downward.

It has also declined nearly 70% from its 52-week high, but this reaction from the market is starting to look overdone. However, by dollar-cost averaging, holding for the long term, and reframing sell-offs as opportunities, it is possible to remain optimistic when facing a correction.Speaking to this third point, let us look at three heavily sold-off stocks that offer the potential to set you up for life.PinterestDriven by its mission \"to help people discover the things they love, and inspire them to do those things in their daily lives,\" idea-incubator Pinterest ( PINS 1.01% ) puts a twist on social media. In a world facing mental health concerns related to social media usage, Pinterest flips the script by providing hope and inspiration -- even if it's only on an aspirational level.Perhaps thanks to this unique connection to its user base, the company saw its share price reach a high of almost $89 in 2021.However, after reaching that high mark, Pinterest saw its monthly active users (MAUs) drop from 478 million in the first quarter of 2021 to 431 million at the end of the year. This drop, paired with PayPal's abandoned acquisition for around $70 per share, has sent the stock down 70% from its peak.So what makes Pinterest interesting now?First, the fears around this MAU decline seem overstated, considering it grew from 367 million in 2019 to 459 million the following year thanks to a pandemic-aided surge. Its subsequent decline in 2021 was far from surprising in hindsight as most of the world reopened, temporarily setting apps like Pinterest on the back burner.Second, despite this pullback in MAUs, its global average revenue per user (ARPU) of $1.93 continues to shine. Generally, a positive score is good, while anything above +30 is excellent, making Pinterest's score stand out.Best yet for investors, businesses with excellent NPS scores tend to outperform the market thanks to happier customers. As a result of this NPS score, its remaining international growth runway, and a meager price to free cash flow ratio of just 23, buying and holding Pinterest at these prices could move your retirement years ahead of schedule.Zoom Video CommunicationsLike Pinterest, Zoom Video Communications ( ZM -0.46% ) boasts an excellent NPS of +53 thanks to its suite of hybrid work-enabling products. After generating $1.5 billion in free cash flow (FCF) over the last year, Zoom now trades at just 25 times FCF.Data by YCharts.Any time a company's price to free cash flow ratio approaches its sales growth rate as is the case here, it catches my attention as reasonably priced growth.Zoom's promising NPS, product optionality, and cheap FCF generation make it a prime sell-off stock to consider holding forever.DocuSignRounding out our trio of high NPS stocks is DocuSign ( DOCU 1.84% ) and its excellent score of +53. Despite this slowdown in billings growth, DocuSign still posted 45% revenue growth last year and a good net dollar retention rate of 119% in the latest quarter.Net dollar retention measures how much DocuSign's existing customers grew their spending with anything above 100% showing expansion. As time passes, this metric will be vital to investors as it will highlight how the Agreement Cloud's growth is faring.Trading at 44 times free cash flow, DocuSign is the most expensive stock of this trio -- and the fastest growing. However, with its growth rate above its price to free cash flow, the stock still looks attractively priced after its sell-off and could be an excellent holding for long-term investors.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":542,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9097674483,"gmtCreate":1645457657366,"gmtModify":1676534029573,"author":{"id":"3577773488711202","authorId":"3577773488711202","name":"inv3st","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/efb6f0592ef761afbf6bab2267a2e76e","crmLevel":3,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3577773488711202","idStr":"3577773488711202"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Like ty","listText":"Like ty","text":"Like ty","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":10,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9097674483","repostId":"2212671969","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2212671969","kind":"highlight","pubTimestamp":1645452001,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2212671969?lang=&edition=full_marsco","pubTime":"2022-02-21 22:00","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Want $2,000 in Annual Dividend Income? Whether you love chasing after the innovative capacity of growth stocks or prefer the simplicity of value stocks, either strategy can work wonders over the long run.

But when it comes to wealth building, few investing strategies have been more consistent than buying dividend stocks.

Although it's a report I reference often, J.P. Morgan Asset Management's comparison of the performance of dividend-paying stocks to those not paying a dividend over multiple decades speaks wonders. J.P. Morgan Asset Management, a division of money-center bank JPMorgan Chase, found that dividend-paying companies returned an annual average of 9.5% between 1972 and 2012. By comparison, the companies not paying a dividend crawled to an annualized return of 1.6% over the same period.

Over time, we should expect dividend stocks to outperform. Companies that parse out a dividend on a regular basis are often profitable, time-tested, and have transparent long-term outlooks. These are typically companies that won't keep investors awake at night with worry.

Ideally, income seekers want the highest dividend yield possible with the least amount of risk. However, risk and yield tend to correlate once yields hit 4% or above. In other words, high-yielding stocks can be yield traps -- i.e., companies with enticingly high yields where the underlying business model is struggling or broken.

The good news is that not all high-yielding stocks are bad news. The following three ultra-high-yielding stocks, which are averaging (yes, averaging) a 12.32% dividend yield, can generate $2,000 in annual dividend income with an initial investment of only $16,250 (split evenly, three ways).

Annaly Capital Management: 12.12% yield

Mortgage real estate investment trust (REIT) Annaly Capital Management (NYSE:NLY) is no stranger to ultra-high-yield dividend stock lists. It's perhaps the most-trusted ultra-high-yield stock, with an average yield of around 10% over the past two decades. The company has also doled out more than $20 billion in dividend income since its inception in 1997.

Mortgage REITs like Annaly have a relatively straightforward operating model, even if the securities they own can be somewhat complex. Annaly is looking to borrow money at the lowest short-term rate possible, and use this capital to purchase higher-yielding long-term assets, like mortgage-backed securities (MBSs). The wider the gap between the average yield on MBSs and the average borrowing rate (this difference is known as the net interest margin), the more money mortgage REITs like Annaly can make.

As you might imagine, the mortgage REIT operating model tends to be interest-rate sensitive, with lower rates often providing the best environment for companies like Annaly to thrive. Over the past couple of months, the interest rate yield curve has flattened a bit, with the 2-year and 10-year yields on U.S. Treasury bonds narrowing. Since the 10-year Treasury bond is a good predictor for where mortgage rates head next, this tightening has resulted in a shrinking book value for Annaly.

But if you pan out beyond just the next couple of quarters, there's a lot to be excited about. If the Federal Reserve does raise lending rates, as expected, it'll also lift the yields on the MBSs Annaly is purchasing. Over time, this will widen the company's net interest margin.

What's more, the interest rate yield curve spends a disproportionately longer period of time in steepening than it does flattening. That's because the U.S. economy spends years expanding, compared to a couple of months or a few quarters in recession. In short, patience should pay off handsomely for Annaly's shareholders.

Icahn Enterprises: 14.44% yield

Another high-yielding dividend stock that can deliver an enormous amount of income from a relatively small investment is diversified holding company Icahn Enterprises (NASDAQ:IEP). This master limited partnership has paid a quarterly distribution for nearly 17 consecutive years and is currently yielding north of 14%!

There are two key reasons Icahn Enterprises is a smart buy for patient, income-seeking investors (aside from its insanely high yield). First, you get the leadership of Carl Icahn, who's the founder of the company and the chairman of the board of directors. Icahn is arguably one of the best-known activist investors on Wall Street. Activist investors usually buy up a single-digit-percentage stake in a company with the goal of gaining board seats or effecting change(s) to increase shareholder value. Sometimes this means pushing for the sale of noncore assets, introducing a capital return program, or perhaps putting an entire company up for sale.

The beauty of the activist-investor approach is that it usually benefits shareholders. While no activist investor has a perfect track record of success, Icahn has shown that he can help create value in virtually any economic environment. That's been demonstrated by Icahn Enterprises' 66 consecutive quarterly distributions.

The second reason this ultra-high-yield stock can be a foundation for income seekers is the cyclical ties of its core holdings. The company has more than a half-dozen different industries represented by its operating segments. But a large percentage of this representation is tied to the energy and automotive industries. As noted, even though recessions are inevitable, periods of expansion last considerably longer. This suggests the natural expansion of the U.S. and global economy over time will allow the value of Icahn Enterprises' cyclical holdings to increase.

AGNC Investment Corp.: 10.4% yield

The third ultra-high-yield dividend stock that can pad investors' pocketbooks is AGNC Investment Corp. (NASDAQ:AGNC). It has averaged a double-digit yield in 12 of the past 13 years, making it one of the most consistently high-yielding companies of the past decade.

AGNC is another mortgage REIT that investors can trust. It has the same basic operating model as Annaly Capital Management, with a unique aspect or two that income seekers should be aware of.

For instance, AGNC has been parsing out its dividend on a monthly basis since October 2014. Most dividend stocks and mortgage REITs, including Annaly, pay their dividends once a quarter. If you prefer the adrenaline rush of nabbing a payout from your holdings on a monthly basis, buying AGNC is the smart way to go.

Something else to note about AGNC Investment is the company's penchant for buying agency securities. An agency asset is backed by the federal government in the event of default. As of the end of 2021, $79.7 billion of AGNC's $82 billion investment portfolio was agency securities. This is an even higher percentage of agency securities, relative to total portfolio holdings, than Annaly has. Though this added protection does lower the yields AGNC nets from the MBSs it purchases, it also allows the company to deploy leverage to boost its profit potential.

The transparency of the mortgage REIT industry also allows income investors to make smart decisions. The stocks in this industry tend to trade very close to their respective book values. With AGNC's shares changing hands for just 88% of their book value at the time of this writing, it makes for not only an excellent income stock, but a fantastic bounce-back candidate from a share price perspective.

","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Want $2,000 in Annual Dividend Income? In short, patience should pay off handsomely for Annaly's shareholders.Icahn Enterprises: 14.44% yieldAnother high-yielding dividend stock that can deliver an enormous amount of income from a relatively small investment is diversified holding company Icahn Enterprises (NASDAQ:IEP). This master limited partnership has paid a quarterly distribution for nearly 17 consecutive years and is currently yielding north of 14%!There are two key reasons Icahn Enterprises is a smart buy for patient, income-seeking investors (aside from its insanely high yield). This suggests the natural expansion of the U.S. and global economy over time will allow the value of Icahn Enterprises' cyclical holdings to increase.AGNC Investment Corp.: 10.4% yieldThe third ultra-high-yield dividend stock that can pad investors' pocketbooks is AGNC Investment Corp. (NASDAQ:AGNC). It has averaged a double-digit yield in 12 of the past 13 years, making it one of the most consistently high-yielding companies of the past decade.AGNC is another mortgage REIT that investors can trust. It has the same basic operating model as Annaly Capital Management, with a unique aspect or two that income seekers should be aware of.For instance, AGNC has been parsing out its dividend on a monthly basis since October 2014. Most dividend stocks and mortgage REITs, including Annaly, pay their dividends once a quarter. If you prefer the adrenaline rush of nabbing a payout from your holdings on a monthly basis, buying AGNC is the smart way to go.Something else to note about AGNC Investment is the company's penchant for buying agency securities. With AGNC's shares changing hands for just 88% of their book value at the time of this writing, it makes for not only an excellent income stock, but a fantastic bounce-back candidate from a share price perspective.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":537,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":115909877,"gmtCreate":1622944742899,"gmtModify":1704193489998,"author":{"id":"3577773488711202","authorId":"3577773488711202","name":"inv3st","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/efb6f0592ef761afbf6bab2267a2e76e","crmLevel":3,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3577773488711202","idStr":"3577773488711202"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Like and comment ty","listText":"Like and comment ty","text":"Like and comment ty","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":5,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/115909877","repostId":"1106312903","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":233,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3580425558261791","authorId":"3580425558261791","name":"weiyun","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/477c415682361148f065d9de1aa8c930","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"authorIdStr":"3580425558261791","idStr":"3580425558261791"},"content":"Done reply pls","text":"Done reply pls","html":"Done reply pls"}],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9094407704,"gmtCreate":1645198020514,"gmtModify":1676534008337,"author":{"id":"3577773488711202","authorId":"3577773488711202","name":"inv3st","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/efb6f0592ef761afbf6bab2267a2e76e","crmLevel":3,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3577773488711202","idStr":"3577773488711202"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Like ty","listText":"Like ty","text":"Like ty","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":7,"commentSize":3,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9094407704","repostId":"1112568930","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1112568930","kind":"news","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Providing stock market headlines, business news, financials and earnings ","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Tiger Newspress","id":"1079075236","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8274c5b9d4c2852bfb1c4d6ce16c68ba"},"pubTimestamp":1645195254,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1112568930?lang=&edition=full_marsco","pubTime":"2022-02-18 22:40","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Some Hot Chinese ADRs Dropped in Morning Trading","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1112568930","media":"Tiger Newspress","summary":"Alibaba, Pinduoduo, Bilibili, Zhihu, JD.com and Tencent Music fell between 4% and 10%.","content":"

Alibaba, Pinduoduo, Bilibili, Zhihu, JD.com and Tencent Music fell between 4% and 10%.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; Quarterly earnings season also ramps up as some of the big banks report results.

Market participants are bracing for another historically hot reading on inflation in the latest CPI data, due out on Wednesday. On a year-over-year basis, consumer prices likely surged by 7.1% in December, based on Bloomberg consensus data, accelerating even further from November's 6.8% year-over-year clip. This would mark the fastest rate since 1982, when CPI rose as much as 8.4% on a year-over-year basis.

And on a month-over-month basis, consumer prices likely rose by 0.4% in December, slowing from November's 0.8% rise but still marking an eighteenth consecutive month of increases.

"Recent months have seen consistent upside surprises as inflation has increasingly broadened out, and it's now the case that seven of the last nine CPI releases have seen the monthly headline increase come in above the consensus among economists on Bloomberg, which just demonstrates how this has taken a lot of people by surprise," Deutsche Bank economists Henry Allen and Jim Reid said in a note.

"Our U.S. economists are projecting that year-on-year inflation will move higher once again, with an increase to +7.0%," they added. "Interestingly though, they think we could be at a turning point with December marking the peak in the year-on-year readings, which they then project will fall back over 2022 and be at +3.0% by this December ahead."

Excluding more volatile food and energy prices, consumer prices likely rose at a 5.4% year-over-year rate in December, also speeding from November's 4.9% pace and coming in at the fastest since 1991.

While price increases have been broad-based in the recovering economy, some economists said rising vehicle prices will likely be one of the main drivers of inflation at year-end.

"The main story will be the increase in autos inflation, with used cars the primary driver," Bank of America economists led by Ethan Harris wrote in a note Friday. "Manheim data showed wholesale used car prices spiking 9.2% [month-over-month] in October, following a 5.3% increase in September. Given a roughly 2-month lag, this sends a signal of incredible strength for CPI used cars this month."

Used car and truck prices had risen 2.5% month-on-month in November, matching the prior month's rise, based on BLS data.

"Outside of autos, we expect further gains in household furnishings and supplies and apparel, reflecting tight supply chains and fewer discounts as the holiday shopping season draws to a close," Harris added.

The December CPI will also be carefully parsed by investors as they gauge the next moves by the Federal Reserve, as some officials eye a quicker shift away from accommodative policies to rein in inflation.

Last week, the Fed's December meeting minutes suggested some officials favored speeding the central bank's asset-purchase tapering and hastening the timing of an initial interest rate hike from current near-zero levels. And against a backdrop of a "stronger economic outlook [and] higher inflation," some officials also suggested they were contemplating the start of reducing the nearly $9 trillion in assets on the central bank's balance sheet. Hints that the Fed was considering tightening policy in the near-term sent equity markets into a tailspin last week.

"The market does have to adjust to what is a surprise in terms of how aggressive the Federal Reserve may be in managing the economy around inflation," Rob Haworth, U.S. Bank Wealth Management senior investment strategist, told Yahoo Finance Livelast week.

Investors may also receive more commentary about how key members of the Federal Reserve expect to approach inflation with their monetary policy toolkit in two confirmation hearings before Congress this week. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's nomination hearing for a second term is set to take place before the Senate Banking Committee on Tuesday — or a day before the December CPI is released. However, Fed Governor Lael Brainard's nomination hearing to become vice chair of the Fed will take place on Thursday before the Senate Banking Committee, after the release of the latest inflation data.

Bank earnings

This week, investors will also see a pick-up in earnings reports, as some of the largest U.S. banks deliver their quarterly results at the end of the week. JPMorgan Chase (JPM), Citigroup (C) and Wells Fargo (WFC) are each slated to report Friday morning before the opening bell.

The results come following a strong run for bank stocks, with financials currently the second-best performing sector in the S&P 500 in 2022, after energy. TheXLF, or exchange-traded fund tracking the financials sector, hit a record high on Friday and logged its best week since February 2021.

Expectations for higher interest rates this year have been one major factor lifting these shares, given that banks' core lending businesses benefit from rising rates. On Friday, the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield rose to approximately 1.8%, or its highest level since January 2020. And robust market activity over the past year likely also helped further lift banks' trading operations.

"As far as the financials go, we think they're going to be pretty good. This last year has seen a lot of trading activity," Scott Ladner, Horizon Investments chief investment officer, told Yahoo Finance Live on Friday."And as we've seen, what's going on right now with respect to yield curve, the yield curve steepened this week."

As fourth-quarter earnings begin to ramp up, many analysts are expecting to see another solid reporting season. However, the estimates are also taking into account slowing momentum after soaring earnings growth rates from earlier last year, helped in large part by easy comparisons to 2020's pandemic-depressed levels.

S&P 500 earnings in aggregate are expected to grow 21.7% for the fourth-quarter of 2021, according to data from FactSet's John Butters as of Friday. If earnings come in as expected, this would mark a fourth consecutive quarter that earnings growth tops 20%.

Economic calendar

Monday:Wholesale inventories, month-over-month, November final (1.2% expected, 1.2% in previous print)

Tuesday:NFIB Small Business Optimism, December (98.5 expected, 98.4 in November)

Wednesday:MBA Mortgage Applications, week ended January 7 (-5.6% during prior week); Consumer Price Index (CPI), month-over-month, December (0.4% expected, 0.8% in November); CPI excluding food and energy, month-over-month, December (0.5% expected, 0.5% in November); CPI year-over-year, December (7.1% expected, 6.8% in November); CPI excluding food and energy, year-over-year, December (5.4% expected, 4.9% in November); Monthly budget statement, December (-$191.3 billion expected); U.S. Federal Reserve Releases Beige Book

Thursday:Producer Price Index (PPI), month-over-month, December (0.4% expected, 0.8% in November); PPI excluding food and energy, month-over-month, December (0.4% expected, 0.7% in November); PPI year-over-year, December (9.8% expected, 9.6% in November); PPI excluding food and energy, year-over-year, December (8.0% expected, 7.7% in November); Initial jobless claims, week ended January 8 (210,000 expected, 207,000 during prior week); Continuing claims, week ended January 1 (1.754 million during prior week)

Friday:Retail sales advance, month-over-month, December (0.0% expected, 0.3% in November); Retail sales excluding autos and gas, month-over-month, December (-0.1% expected, 0.2% in November); Import price index, month-over-month, December (0.2%. expected, 0.7% in November); Capacity utilization, December (77.0% expected); Industrial production, month-over-month, December (0.3% expected, 0.5% in November); University of Michigan sentiment, January preliminary (70.0 expected, 70.6 in December)

Earnings calendar

Monday:No notable reports scheduled for release

Tuesday:No notable reports scheduled for release

Wednesday:Jefferies Financial Corp. And on a month-over-month basis, consumer prices likely rose by 0.4% in December, slowing from November's 0.8% rise but still marking an eighteenth consecutive month of increases.\"Recent months have seen consistent upside surprises as inflation has increasingly broadened out, and it's now the case that seven of the last nine CPI releases have seen the monthly headline increase come in above the consensus among economists on Bloomberg, which just demonstrates how this has taken a lot of people by surprise,\" Deutsche Bank economists Henry Allen and Jim Reid said in a note.\"Our U.S. economists are projecting that year-on-year inflation will move higher once again, with an increase to +7.0%,\" they added. \"Interestingly though, they think we could be at a turning point with December marking the peak in the year-on-year readings, which they then project will fall back over 2022 and be at +3.0% by this December ahead.\"Excluding more volatile food and energy prices, consumer prices likely rose at a 5.4% year-over-year rate in December, also speeding from November's 4.9% pace and coming in at the fastest since 1991.While price increases have been broad-based in the recovering economy, some economists said rising vehicle prices will likely be one of the main drivers of inflation at year-end.\"The main story will be the increase in autos inflation, with used cars the primary driver,\" Bank of America economists led by Ethan Harris wrote in a note Friday. \"Manheim data showed wholesale used car prices spiking 9.2% [month-over-month] in October, following a 5.3% increase in September. Given a roughly 2-month lag, this sends a signal of incredible strength for CPI used cars this month.\"Used car and truck prices had risen 2.5% month-on-month in November, matching the prior month's rise, based on BLS data.\"Outside of autos, we expect further gains in household furnishings and supplies and apparel, reflecting tight supply chains and fewer discounts as the holiday shopping season draws to a close,\" Harris added. The December CPI will also be carefully parsed by investors as they gauge the next moves by the Federal Reserve, as some officials eye a quicker shift away from accommodative policies to rein in inflation.Last week, the Fed's December meeting minutes suggested some officials favored speeding the central bank's asset-purchase tapering and hastening the timing of an initial interest rate hike from current near-zero levels. And against a backdrop of a \"stronger economic outlook [and] higher inflation,\" some officials also suggested they were contemplating the start of reducing the nearly $9 trillion in assets on the central bank's balance sheet. Hints that the Fed was considering tightening policy in the near-term sent equity markets into a tailspin last week.\"The market does have to adjust to what is a surprise in terms of how aggressive the Federal Reserve may be in managing the economy around inflation,\" Rob Haworth, U.S. Bank Wealth Management senior investment strategist, told Yahoo Finance Livelast week.Investors may also receive more commentary about how key members of the Federal Reserve expect to approach inflation with their monetary policy toolkit in two confirmation hearings before Congress this week. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's nomination hearing for a second term is set to take place before the Senate Banking Committee on Tuesday — or a day before the December CPI is released. However, Fed Governor Lael Brainard's nomination hearing to become vice chair of the Fed will take place on Thursday before the Senate Banking Committee, after the release of the latest inflation data.Bank earningsThis week, investors will also see a pick-up in earnings reports, as some of the largest U.S. banks deliver their quarterly results at the end of the week. JPMorgan Chase (JPM), Citigroup (C) and Wells Fargo (WFC) are each slated to report Friday morning before the opening bell. The results come following a strong run for bank stocks, with financials currently the second-best performing sector in the S&P 500 in 2022, after energy. TheXLF, or exchange-traded fund tracking the financials sector, hit a record high on Friday and logged its best week since February 2021.Expectations for higher interest rates this year have been one major factor lifting these shares, given that banks' core lending businesses benefit from rising rates. On Friday, the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield rose to approximately 1.8%, or its highest level since January 2020. And robust market activity over the past year likely also helped further lift banks' trading operations.\"As far as the financials go, we think they're going to be pretty good. This last year has seen a lot of trading activity,\" Scott Ladner, Horizon Investments chief investment officer, told Yahoo Finance Live on Friday.\"And as we've seen, what's going on right now with respect to yield curve, the yield curve steepened this week.\"As fourth-quarter earnings begin to ramp up, many analysts are expecting to see another solid reporting season. However, the estimates are also taking into account slowing momentum after soaring earnings growth rates from earlier last year, helped in large part by easy comparisons to 2020's pandemic-depressed levels.S&P 500 earnings in aggregate are expected to grow 21.7% for the fourth-quarter of 2021, according to data from FactSet's John Butters as of Friday. If earnings come in as expected, this would mark a fourth consecutive quarter that earnings growth tops 20%.Economic calendarMonday:Wholesale inventories, month-over-month, November final (1.2% expected, 1.2% in previous print)Tuesday:NFIB Small Business Optimism, December (98.5 expected, 98.4 in November)Wednesday:MBA Mortgage Applications, week ended January 7 (-5.6% during prior week); Consumer Price Index (CPI), month-over-month, December (0.4% expected, 0.8% in November); CPI excluding food and energy, month-over-month, December (0.5% expected, 0.5% in November); CPI year-over-year, December (7.1% expected, 6.8% in November); CPI excluding food and energy, year-over-year, December (5.4% expected, 4.9% in November); Monthly budget statement, December (-$191.3 billion expected); U.S. Federal Reserve Releases Beige BookThursday:Producer Price Index (PPI), month-over-month, December (0.4% expected, 0.8% in November); PPI excluding food and energy, month-over-month, December (0.4% expected, 0.7% in November); PPI year-over-year, December (9.8% expected, 9.6% in November); PPI excluding food and energy, year-over-year, December (8.0% expected, 7.7% in November); Initial jobless claims, week ended January 8 (210,000 expected, 207,000 during prior week); Continuing claims, week ended January 1 (1.754 million during prior week)Friday:Retail sales advance, month-over-month, December (0.0% expected, 0.3% in November); Retail sales excluding autos and gas, month-over-month, December (-0.1% expected, 0.2% in November); Import price index, month-over-month, December (0.2%. expected, 0.7% in November); Capacity utilization, December (77.0% expected); Industrial production, month-over-month, December (0.3% expected, 0.5% in November); University of Michigan sentiment, January preliminary (70.0 expected, 70.6 in December)Earnings calendarMonday:No notable reports scheduled for releaseTuesday:No notable reports scheduled for releaseWednesday:Jefferies Financial Corp.
